Celebrating International Women’s Day BUSINESS

Women around the world gathered on 8 March to celebrate International Women’s Day (IWD) and rally for women’s rights. IWD is a day in which women celebrate the economic, political and socials achievements of women past and present. The first IWD was celebrated in 1911, making 2011 the 100 year anniversary. Karratha celebrated IWD in many ways including a lunch organised by Karratha Soroptimist International Karratha (SIK) on 8 March and another organised by Rio Tinto on 9 March. Soroptimist International is an international organisation for business and professional women who volunteer their time, talents and resources to improve the lives of women and girls in local communities and throughout the world. The SIK lunch saw many women from all walks of life gather together at the Lotteries House to share their stories, many dressed in their country’s traditional dress. Speeches were delivered by guest speakers Dr Shek Graham, Shire of Roebourne President Nicole Lockwood, Shontay Cardew, Lindy Chan and SIK President Judie Pettitt. President Judie Pettitt said that IWD has always been such a significant day to Soroptimist International since the first club was founded in 1921, making the club 90 years old. “The club took up the call of women across the US, UK and Europe to unite in campaigning in 1911 for their right to vote, right to work shorter hours, right to receive better pay” she said. “The status of women and recognition of women's rights across the globe remain still at the core Soroptimist International's service, and IWD provides a barometer once a year against which to measure progress.” The event was sponsored by Shire of Roebourne, Bakers temptation, Noodle Wok, Coles, McDonalds, Soroptimist International (Jo and Judie), Vince Cattania, Bakers Delight and Salvation Army Women’s Refuge Karratha. The lunch hosted by Rio Tinto was held at The Icon Restaurant with many attending. During the three course meal, speeches were delivered by guest speakers Denise Goldsworthy, Managing Director Rio Tinto Dampier Salt Ltd, Nicole Lockwood Shire of Roebourne President, Rachel Whiting Small Business Centre and Judie Pettitt President SIK. For the WA Hall of Fame, Australians were given the chance to nominate a truly inspirational woman that deserved recognition and on IWD the 100 chosen women were announced. During Denise’s speech she told the story of how she got to where she is today and the struggles she’s faced being a woman. “We can be successful business women by combining our work life and our home life” she said. “First you’ve got to know what you want, then you’ve got to be prepared to fight for it.” “The mining industry in WA is an exciting place to be and I’ve had many roles within Rio Tinto. But none has given me the scope to change people’s lives and a business as much as being the Managing Director of Dampier Salt.” Robyn Sermon Communities Manager Rio Tinto said that Rio Tinto celebrated IWD because honouring the contribution of their female staff is of the utmost importance. “By supporting events such as International Women’s Day, we can raise the profile of career opportunities at Rio Tinto and hopefully do away with the old idea that mining is just for men” she said. “With the event including not only our staff but also with community members, Shire councillors and business women, we celebrated the success of women and hopefully inspired many women to continue to follow their dreams, strive for the best and continue to work hard for themselves and other women to reach personal and professional goals.”

My lucky day

I can only say THANK YOU... Last Thursday afternoon, my heart went through my feet when I realised (after I had arrived home) that I had left my handbag in the shopping trolley outside McDonalds. The one day that I had everything in my bag and I mean EVERYTHING... Wallet (with a fair amount of cash in it...), my brand new passport, my phone and some important documents! Arriving back to the shops to see an empty trolley was heart breaking, only to be told that a young boy, maybe 11 or 12 years old had taken it and said that he would hand it in at Centre Management. I have never run so fast in my life, and it was there with EVERYTHING still in it, right down to the 5 cent piece!! Amazing! I am so happy to know that there are people in our community that value honesty. CARE help to keep our beaches beautiful On Sunday 6 March an estimated 562,511 people across Australia participated in a major clean up for Clean Up Australia Day - 166 of these people were from areas within the Pilbara. Local organisation Communities Against Rubbishing the Environment (CARE) along with the Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) organised a clean up on nine popular coastal areas which were Dampier, Withnell Bay, Karratha Back Beach, 40 Mile Beach, Wickham, John’s Creek, Point Anketell, Nickol Bay and Cleaverville. The event also marked the start of the DEC’s Marine

Program. 166 people volunteered to help with the clean up and in total they managed to collect 667 bags of rubbish including three car bodies. Using the Shire of Roebourne’s Bucks for bags initiative the funds raised from the clean up have totaled to an outstanding $4674 which will now go towards the Shire President’s (Nicole Lockwood) Carnarvon Flood Appeal. DEC Karratha Clean Marine coordinator, Libby Hoskin (also CARE member) said the clean up was a huge success and they are pleased to have raised so much money for the

The $3.5 million facility has a fully air-conditioned, indoor children’s playground, a café, a dedicated youth space and a live performance and stage area. Access to Wickham Boat Beach restricted for road realignment Early works to prepare for the proposed expansion of Cape Lambert are underway as part of Rio Tinto’s Pilbara growth program which will also include the realignment of Boat Beach Road. For the duration of construction of the road

realignment, access to tracks in this area will be restricted. Four-wheel drive access to all beaches south of the Yacht Club will still be possible via Boat Beach. Following completion of the road realignment in early May 2011, some

sections adjacent to the new road will be fenced for environmental and site security purposes. Two dedicated beach/ track access points will be constructed, in addition to the primary access point at Boat Beach.

Out of courtesy, let all your neighbours know that you plan on having a party and when you intend to finish. This reduces the possibility of Police being called by your neighbours. Register your party at the Police Station with Party Safe. You will be provided with a booklet with easy to follow tips to assist you in reducing the risk of intoxicated guests or gate-crashers. It also allows police to have forewarning of the party and a contact person should they need to attend. Ensure there is plenty of food and water available for your guests. Have low or non-alcoholic drinks available for your guests. Using cans or plastic cups reduces the risks of broken glass. Remember every Police car is a booze bus so you need to reduce the risk of your friends losing their license or causing a traffic crash by allowing

Shire of Roebourne President Nicole Lockwood said the Bulgarra Community Centre would become the “home” of sports and recreation across the region. Councillor Lockwood said she was excited to be taking the first step towards finally delivering on this highly-anticipated community project. “We’ve been talking about the need for a first-class sporting venue at Bulgarra Oval for a number of years and I am pleased this council has been able to get it off the ground,” she said. “The Bulgarra Community Centre is part of a wider investment in sports and recreation across the Shire of Roebourne including the construction of two softball diamonds, one with dugouts and fencing, a multi-user storage shed and upgrades to parking, electrical supply and lighting at Bulgarra Oval. “Life can’t be about all work and

no play, it is critical that Council supports the ongoing development of individual and team sports through the provision of modern, well-equipped facilities.” The Bulgarra Community Centre will directly benefit countless sporting organisations including football, cricket, rugby, softball, teeball, touch football, soccer, netball and tennis. Prison volunteers required The Independent Visitor Scheme, run by the Office of the Inspector of Custodial Services in Perth, are currently seeking volunteers for Roebourne Regional Prison. If you think you would feel rewarded by helping offenders in custody, why not volunteer as an Independent Visitor? Full training is given and you would be providing a valuable community service. Visitors listen and talk with offenders in custody and provide them with an independent voice. They are not there to

solve the problems - but to make sure the right people hear their concerns and to help ensure that prisons operate justly and humanely. Inspector of Custodial Services, Professor Neil Morgan, said “Volunteers make a significant and positive contribution to the custodial system” he said. “They help ensure prisons become places that stop the offending cycle, rather than act as a warehouse until release. “With local knowledge, visitors provide important information about how the prison in their community

operates and how it is performing to help those incarcerated.” Volunteers visit their prison at least once every two months for 3-4 hours. Following a visit, a short report is provided to the Office of the Inspector of Custodial Services, however the report is not complicated and full training is given. The heat is on at the All Season’s The All Seasons Hotel, Karratha and Beatzworkin Productions have recently teamed up together to bring you the Sunday Heat Wave, the ideal Sunday session in Karratha. Perfectly fitting in with the bank holiday weekend, the first session kicked off on Sunday 6 March from 1pm till 6pm, and will continue throughout the month of March but with a new time of 12pm till 5pm. All Seasons, Karratha Assistant Manager Tristan McLachlan said that if the event proves to be popular, extending it will be taken into consideration. Set in an idyllic spot by the pool, the day saw various DJs play their sets to entertain the crowd such as Bounce, Dr Bob, Dekhedz, The Enormous Hat, Dark and Dirty and Geasts. Tristan McLachlan said that the first Sunday Heat Wave went really well and had over 80 people in at one time. “It was a really good day but once the word of mouth gets out there, hopefully it will be a lot more popular” he said. “It’s just a perfect outlet

British India are on their way to K-town

Melbourne based band, British India are all set to play at the Karratha Tavern on 18 March as part of their three month ‘March into the Ocean’ tour around Australia. British India first came into the spotlight in 2007 with their acclaimed debut album Guillotine. Their popularity rose as songs such as Black and White Radio, Tie Up My Hands and Run the Red Light were played in venues and festivals across the nation. They have since toured around Australia playing an extensive amount of gigs and festivals such as Big Day Out, Falls, Pyramid Rock, Southbound, Homebake and Splendour In The Grass to name a few. When it comes to their style of music, singer Declan says the band aspires to make different music but they always limit themselves to two guitars, bass, drums and voice. “All different kinds of music might be in our minds, but under that umbrella and with that limitation it sounds very much like British India” he said. “It’s got quite a punk type of attitude to it too.” Growing up, the boys listened to some great influential bands and artists such as The Smashing Pumpkins, Oasis and Blur as well as The Beatles and John Lennon and agree they have been influenced by them but believe they have their own individual sound. “I think the trick is to keep open

minded to different influences and not block anything out, and then once it goes through the British India filter its becomes very much our own” Declan said. When it comes to writing their music the Melbourne boys make it a joint effort but often write the music first before writing the lyrics. “I think anyone in the band would find it very corny to be sitting around whistfully strumming a guitar and putting it to some kind of poetry, we’re more about getting together, the four of us and banging away on a certain groove” Declan said. British India are well known for their energetic live shows which Declan said originally came with the need to establish themselves in the music scene. “When we first started we needed to stand out from quite a lot of bands so I think that by being really energetic and enthusiastic on stage we were able to do that, but also when we first met, Nick was really influenced by Jimmy Hendrix and Pete Townsend, and they play like hell anyway, so when we all first plugged in together and we saw Nick just run riot on the guitar, we all just had to try and keep up.” The band recently ended 2010 with a tour around the UK and now back in Australia they are all excited to get stuck into their three month tour, which began in Ballarat, in their home state Victoria. Singer Declan said being on the road is

in every bar, and two weeks after its release was voted as Channel [V] Ripe Clip of the Week. “It was quite a while in the making,” Declan said. “But once we got it sounding enthusiastic and good, with a strong melody and a nice tempo, we showed it to our manager who really liked it.” “They said lets record it and put it up for free on the internet and get it on the radio, and show people what we’ve been doing and checking where we’re at, its also a great statement intention for our next album and to show what kind of sounds are turning us on and

what we’re doing in writing.” Touring with bands Boy in a Box and City Riot, British India will arrive in Karratha for the first time on 18 March at the Karratha Tavern and we’ve been told to expect nothing less than a party. “Expect a cool party and a good time because thats what we do” Declan said. “We’re not the kind of stuck up jaded hipsters that you find around the tracks, we’re full of excitement.” Tickets can be purchased from the Karratha Tavern or Trax Records.

Doggy intuition You may have heard many stories relating to animals intuition and many of you have probably had an experience yourself. Animals, especially dogs, are regarded as having a sixth sense about things that humans do not foresee or pick up on. On Monday 21 February, Julie Eardley a SAFE volunteer and supporter had her own fortunate experience with animal intuition. While at home with her two children, nephew and two dogs, a storm started to brew in her street. Her female dog, Ali started to bark incessantly outside. She knew that her dogs (both adopted from SAFE) were growing more and more concerned and agitated with each minute. Finally to comfort the dogs she brought them inside the house. Clearly distressed, Julie hoped that they would settle down by being inside the house with the family. It was not five minutes after Ali’s warning barking that a tornado

Less then a minute later it was gone, but having done enough damage to make the home unlivable. After surveying the damage, she thought back to Ali’s obvious distress and panic that ended up potentially saving the life of herself and the family’s other dog Boof. Disregarding the damage to their home, Julie was simply relieved that her family and her pets were SAFE.

MBAW is a nationally annual event that celebrates the joy of parenting multiples, but it also aims at educating communities and professionals about the challenges these parents face. Karratha is home to a few families with twins, with one set of triplets born last week. Eight mothers to twins and now triplets in Karratha have formed a mothers group, meeting once a month. Chelsea Elmer, mother to twins Jai and Malcolm said that there is an automatic bond between mothers that have twins because of that mutual understanding. “Everything is harder having twins” she said. “They do everything together, when one is

Last week’s competition at Karratha Golf Club was the Monthly Mug event sponsored by Air Dynamics and Darren Beier, the Karratha Golf Professional. A strong field of sixty eight golfers turned out to test their mettle in this stroke event. The course may be looking fantastic, but with every Beauty there is a Beast, and the seasonal hazards of water on the course and prolific growth in the rough make the playing just a little more difficult than normal. In the novelty prizes the nearest the pin prizes went to Gary Breedon on hole 3, Michael Pennings on hole 8, Peter Schneider on hole 11 and Mark Smyth on hole 16. Karratha BMX Riders to Bring Home State Plates By Nick Muller Last weekend over 500 BMX riders from around the State including 22 riders from the Karratha BMX Club travelled to Perth to compete in the 2011 BMX State Titles. The Westside BMX Club in Balcatta have been busy over the last few months rebuilding their track and preparing to host the Titles and their hard work paid off with a well run event. With a six metre high start ramp, riders were a little bit intimidated when they first arrived at the track but after Pre State events and practise sessions in the week leading up to the State Titles, all of the Karratha riders soon felt comfortable riding down the ramp. Saturday morning saw the official opening and riders march past before the Sprockets and Cruisers took to the track. There were five Karratha riders competing on Saturday, they were Rodney Gethin (45+ Cruiser), Greg Kiehne (40 – 44 Cruisers), Patricia Kiehne (19+ Women’s Cruiser), Teagan Singer (18 and under Women’s Cruiser) and Abbie Kiehne (Girls Sprockets). All riders did extremely well with Rodney taking out the number 3WA plate and Teagan taking out the 7WA plate. Sunday saw the twenty inch class riders on the track for their races; the first three or four races of the day gave an indication of how hard everyone was trying with several riders coming off in each race. The first aiders were kept busy but fortunately there were no serious injuries. Karratha was again well represented with eighteen riders competing in the twenty inch class, these riders were Patrick Kiehne (8yo boys), Brady Kirkwood (9yo boys), Brodie Dewacht (9yo boys), Cruz Musitano (10yo boys), Dylan Bennetts (10yo boys), Elijah Lyon (10yo boys), Ryley Hinchcliffe (10yo boys), Jed Bullen (10yo boys), Will Kiehne (10yo boys), Callum Kirkwood (11yo boys), William Gethin (11yo boys), Dylan Muller (11yo boys), Isaac Lyon (13yo boys), Jarrod Dewacht (13yo

boys), Toby Muller (13yo boys), Michael Burch 15 (15yo boys), Macie Bennetts (12yo girls) and Teagan Singer (14yo girls ). This was the first event of this size for a number of Karratha riders and although overwhelmed by the number of riders and the sheer size of the event, all riders did the Karratha BMX Club proud and showed how hard they had been training over the summer months. Even though a couple of riders were unlucky enough to fall off, they dusted themselves off and were back on their bikes chasing other riders down as quick as they could.

A number of riders made the finals with the following riders taking home State plates meaning that they finished in the top eight for their age group Brady 6WA, Cruz 2WA, Dylan Bennetts 5WA, Isaac 3WA and Macie 4WA. With the State Titles over for 2011 the Karratha BMX Club will now concentrate on getting their race season underway. The BMX track has held up well to the rain that we have had this year but will still need some work to get it ready for riders to begin racing.

Go storm! Junior Rugby League is back in play

Finally the 2011 Junior Rugby League Season is about to start in Karratha. After a huge success last year at the grand-final with Karratha taking out the premiership in a number of age divisions and in the Girls U18, we are looking to prove ourselves against the Wickham Wasp’s and Hedland Cyclones this year. Our new Storm jerseys looked awesome and were donated by Jazz Noodle Wok, Swainsona Café, Bruton Pty Ltd, Signswest, Water2Water, Scarboro Painting Services, Raptor Designs and The Ugly Bikers Club, and our swish and very professional training shirts were kindly sponsored by Kaz Adair Furniture and our long-standing sponsor Rio Tinto. We are so grateful to all of our sponsors, without whom the club just wouldn’t function! We are always looking for new sponsors, so if you would like to help out the kids in any way you can, please let us know! Last year we had over 130 players register and play from under 6’s through to under 18’s, both boys, girls and mixed teams. Many of our players had never played rugby league before, but with the help of some dedicated coaches, we saw the skills of the players improve and big smiles from

the kids when they scored or ran a great tackle. The proof of the professionalism and skill of our players have in Karratha is in Xavier Leaf U16’s who has gone to Sydney to play school rugby, and Timothy Tupou; one of our U18’s players who has just been signed with a QLD club to play the reserves. We wish them both every success in their rugby careers! With the Western Reds Rugby League team making its way back into the NRL, our young players have more opportunities coming up in the pursuit of a future in rugby league than ever before. We are really excited as the future really does look extremely promising for our Pilbara players. We encourage all of the community to come down and watch a game or two. Who knows, the players you see running around the oval today, you could be paying to see in a few short years! Last year was a long season with travel between Hedland and Wickham, which has been improved this year by aiming for a shorter sharper season starting from 7 May through to the grand final being the second week of August. These finals dates are still to be confirmed. Training is on a Tuesday

and Thursday at Millars Well Oval (at this stage) from 5.30 – 6.30 pm for the younger players and 6.30pm – 7.30pm for the older players –we will have more info at registration. Games are usually on Saturdays unless otherwise advised. Training is to start on 5 April. Dale Christy and co from WARL (Western Australia Rugby League) will be coming up to visit our local schools and do a rugby league clinic for boys and girls during the first week of April and aim to do a special ‘Kangaroo Clinic’ for any interested kids on Saturday 9th April. This clinic has been a great success in the past years that we have been lucky enough to secure it in Karratha, and the kids really get a taste of what Rugby League is all about and the fun they can have in this sport. If you are interested in playing or are re-registering, registrations are as follows: Karratha Centro Shopping Centre 19 March and 26 March, 9am to 1pm or Millars Well Pavillion, 2 April, 9am to 1pm. Please bring your birth certificate or proof of age identification to registration.
