Port Hedland youth nominated a ﬁnalist for WA Youth Awards Town of Port Hedland employee and outstanding member of the arts community David Sullivan has been nominated as a finalist in the 2011 WA Youth Awards, in the category of Create! Propel Youth Arts Award for excellence in arts. Mr Sullivan was also nominated for the 2011 Premier’s Australia Day Active Citizenship Awards in the category of persons

under 25 years of age. The award recognises and celebrates community contribution and achievements by local residents. “This is a fantastic achievement for David and the Town and demonstrates what can be achieved by the young people in Hedland. I’m sure the community is extremely proud of him and wish him well,’ said

New Port Hedland Aboriginal Liaison Oﬃcer to bridge the health gap As a Port Hedland resident for 40 years and an enrolled nurse for 30 years, Sue Walker is using her considerable local knowledge and health industry experience to help make healthcare more accessible to Aboriginal people. An Aboriginal Liaison Officer (ALO) at the Hedland Health Campus, Mrs Walker works in the emergency department and visits the wards to help breakdown cultural barriers often experienced by Aboriginal people when accessing mainstream health care. Her role is one of two ALO positions funded under the $38.2 million Pilbara Health Initiative: a five-year partnership between the State Government’s Royalties for Regions program and the Chamber of Minerals and Energy’s Pilbara Industry’s Community Council (PICC) Health Initiative members (BHP Billiton Iron Ore, Chevron Australia Pty Ltd, North West Shelf Joint Venture, Rio Tinto and Woodside Energy), which aims to boost health services in the region. BHP Billiton Iron Ore is the principal industry sponsor of the Aboriginal Liaison Officer initiative.

“Health is my field.” she said “I have always worked in health, it is my passion, just as my people are my passion, so this role is perfect for me,” she said. “Sometimes Aboriginal people come into the hospital and think they are not welcome because of something that happened in the past. “I am able to calm them down, and encourage them to stay and get treated. “However, I not only get to help a lot of Aboriginal people in this role but I also do a lot of education on cultural differences with health service staff, both informally on a dayto-day basis and through formal cultural awareness talks. “A lot of my work also involves referring people to appropriate services such as the Aboriginal Medical Service or a hostel if someone is homeless, ensuring people get their medication, making sure they have a lift home. “I also make a lot of cups of tea. “Sometimes I have to go back and look at the job description,” she joked. My lucky day

I can only say THANK YOU... Last Thursday afternoon, my heart went through my feet when I realised (after I had arrived home) that I had left my handbag in the shopping trolley outside McDonalds. The one day that I had everything in my bag and I mean EVERYTHING... Wallet (with a fair amount of cash in it...), my brand new passport, my phone and some important documents! Arriving back to the shops to see an empty trolley was heart breaking, only to be told that a young boy, maybe 11 or 12 years old had taken it and said that he would hand it in at Centre Management. I have never run so fast in my life, and it was there with EVERYTHING still in it, right down to the 5 cent piece!! Amazing! I am so happy to know that there are people in our community that value honesty. Town to move forward with GP housing project The Town of Port Hedland’s GP Housing Project is moving forward with the GP Housing Business Plan now advertised for public comment and the Town calling for request for proposals for design and construct of housing. site within the Town of Port Hedland. Stage One of the project has received funding from BHP Billiton Iron Ore and Royalties for Regions, with each proponent contributing $1.5 million each. The community responses from the Business Plan will be presented to Council at the Ordinary Council Meeting on Wednesday 27 April 2011. Roebourne Shire Council president Nicole Lockwood is urging young people aged 12 to 18 to years to get involved and enter the Karratha Youth and Family Centre naming competition. She said a $400 Centro Karratha voucher was up for grabs and the winning entry would be announced in early May. “We are looking for

something fun and creative that captures the ‘feel’ of the facility,” she said. “I’m really looking forward to hearing some of the communities’ suggestions.” Nominations for the Shire of Roebourne’s Karratha Youth and Family Centre naming competition will open on Monday, March 21 2011. Access to Wickham Boat Beach restricted for road realignment Early works to prepare for the proposed expansion of Cape Lambert are underway as part of Rio Tinto’s Pilbara growth program which will also include the realignment of Boat Beach Road. For the duration of construction of the road

realignment, access to tracks in this area will be restricted. Four-wheel drive access to all beaches south of the Yacht Club will still be possible via Boat Beach. Following completion of the road realignment in early May 2011, some

sections adjacent to the new road will be fenced for environmental and site security purposes. Two dedicated beach/ track access points will be constructed, in addition to the primary access point at Boat Beach.

Out of courtesy, let all your neighbours know that you plan on having a party and when you intend to finish. This reduces the possibility of Police being called by your neighbours. Register your party at the Police Station with Party Safe. You will be provided with a booklet with easy to follow tips to assist you in reducing the risk of intoxicated guests or gate-crashers. It also allows police to have forewarning of the party and a contact person should they need to attend. Ensure there is plenty of food and water available for your guests. Have low or non-alcoholic drinks available for your guests. Using cans or plastic cups reduces the risks of broken glass. Remember every Police car is a booze bus so you need to reduce the risk of your friends losing their license or causing a traffic crash by allowing

Prison volunteers required The Independent Visitor Scheme, run by the Office of the Inspector of Custodial Services in Perth, are currently seeking volunteers for Roebourne Regional Prison. If you think you would feel rewarded by helping offenders in custody, why not volunteer as an Independent Visitor? Full training is given and you would be providing a valuable community service. Visitors listen and talk with offenders in custody and provide them with an independent voice. They are not there to

solve the problems - but to make sure the right people hear their concerns and to help ensure that prisons operate justly and humanely. Inspector of Custodial Services, Professor Neil Morgan, said “Volunteers make a significant and positive contribution to the custodial system” he said. “They help ensure prisons become places that stop the offending cycle, rather than act as a warehouse until release. “With local knowledge, visitors provide important information about how the prison in their community

operates and how it is performing to help those incarcerated.” Volunteers visit their prison at least once every two months for 3-4 hours. Following a visit, a short report is provided to the Office of the Inspector of Custodial Services, however the report is not complicated and full training is given. Sweet Caroline By Hedland Down to Earth conditions. With the New Year come varieties of plants. A striking and eye catching plant first released in Australia with colours red purple and light green. The Ipomea species are members of the morning glory family Convolvulaceae Ipomea Batalas, the cultivated species. This plant is a fast growing vine, possessing a wide variety of leave shapes ranging from palmate and deeply lobed, to cordate or triangular shapes leaves with no lobes. Ornamental sweet potato has been bred, for unique foliage colours don’t produce large fleshy storage roots like sweet potato. The plants are highly desirable due to their ability to grow under varied stress

They cover a large space, last an entire growing season and have few insects or disease problems. It has colours ranging from chartreuse leaves to deep burgundy, sweetheart red, sweetheart purple and sweet light green. Best planted in partial shade, the sweet heat variety does tolerate heat and is very low maintenance. It does prefer fertile and well drained soil and regular watering. A great companion for the Ipomea’s are Felicia daisy, petunias and Geranium. Also great in pots and hanging baskets as they mound up then drape over the sides of the pots. It is the time of the year to be a little contemplative I think. The kids have settled back into school, the holidays are over and some of us are revisiting our new year’s resolution to get our mind going, or to find a new hobby or even just to find something to do that gets us out of the house on a regular basis. If you are looking for something fun to do that is stress free and doesn’t cost a bomb, may I suggest the sculpture unit that is part of the Visual Arts Certificate at Hedland TAFE. So many people say to me that they would love to study art but that they aren’t creative or that they couldn’t handle the pressures of study. To these people I say everybody is creative. Without fail when you start asking them what they do in their spare time or what interests them it turns out to be something creative. You don’t have to want to paint a masterpiece to be creative – you just have to find something you enjoy and do it. It may also be that you haven’t found your creative medium yet and this is why a course through the TAFE can be so brilliant – you get to try so many different things. This leads me on to the second thing people say about the pressures of study. Guess how many assignments I have to do for the sculpture unit? None. Essays? None. Exams? None. Let me tell you what I have to do. I have to undertake 10 experiments in creating sculptures taking 15 minutes to 1 hour for each experiment. So far I have used some modelling clay to create a very weird looking little woman, experimented with plaster bandage, undertaken some paper mache, chiselled away as some hebel block and created some paper mache clay I found a recipe for on the internet.

• Amanda Firenze Pentney enjoys sculpture as part of her Visual Arts Certiﬁcate at Hedland TAFE. After this I have to produce three small sculptural pieces related by a common concept. I have decided to make paper mache clay sculptures of the characters out of my books, another student made little people out of telephone pages. Then I have the option of creating a 3D artwork from a sculpture kit or creating a piece of assemblage art which is the option I am going for. I have decided to steal my kids’ toys and try and make a Transformer out of them. Of course eventually I will give them back, but not until I get to show off my sculpture and the bonus will be less mess in

their bedrooms until then. It is a requirement of the unit that I do some research about sculpture and my artworks but this really is as simple as having a look on the internet, thinking about what I want to do, talking to other artists, students and teachers and being inspired by the world around me. After this I put down my thoughts and notes on my work into my visual diary and I am ready to go. So for the bargain price of $162.40 I get out one night a week to have a great time in a stress free environment in the guise of studying sculpture. No wonder I am thrilled about it.

The heat is on at the All Season’s The All Seasons Hotel, Karratha and Beatzworkin Productions have recently teamed up together to bring you the Sunday Heat Wave, the ideal Sunday session in Karratha. Perfectly fitting in with the bank holiday weekend, the first session kicked off on Sunday 6 March from 1pm till 6pm, and will continue throughout the month of March but with a new time of 12pm till 5pm. All Seasons, Karratha Assistant Manager Tristan McLachlan said that if the event proves to be popular, extending it will be taken into consideration. Set in an idyllic spot by the pool, the day saw various DJs play their sets to entertain the crowd such as Bounce, Dr Bob, Dekhedz, The Enormous Hat, Dark and Dirty and Geasts. Tristan McLachlan said that the first Sunday Heat Wave went really well and had over 80 people in at one time. “It was a really good day but once the word of mouth gets out there, hopefully it will be a lot more popular” he said. “It’s just a perfect outlet

British India are on their way to K-town

Melbourne based band, British India are all set to play at the Karratha Tavern on 18 March as part of their three month ‘March into the Ocean’ tour around Australia. British India first came into the spotlight in 2007 with their acclaimed debut album Guillotine. Their popularity rose as songs such as Black and White Radio, Tie Up My Hands and Run the Red Light were played in venues and festivals across the nation. They have since toured around Australia playing an extensive amount of gigs and festivals such as Big Day Out, Falls, Pyramid Rock, Southbound, Homebake and Splendour In The Grass to name a few. When it comes to their style of music, singer Declan says the band aspires to make different music but they always limit themselves to two guitars, bass, drums and voice. “All different kinds of music might be in our minds, but under that umbrella and with that limitation it sounds very much like British India” he said. “It’s got quite a punk type of attitude to it too.” Growing up, the boys listened to some great influential bands and artists such as The Smashing Pumpkins, Oasis and Blur as well as The Beatles and John Lennon and agree they have been influenced by them but believe they have their own individual sound. “I think the trick is to keep open

minded to different influences and not block anything out, and then once it goes through the British India filter its becomes very much our own” Declan said. When it comes to writing their music the Melbourne boys make it a joint effort but often write the music first before writing the lyrics. “I think anyone in the band would find it very corny to be sitting around whistfully strumming a guitar and putting it to some kind of poetry, we’re more about getting together, the four of us and banging away on a certain groove” Declan said. Doggy intuition You may have heard many stories relating to animals intuition and many of you have probably had an experience yourself. Animals, especially dogs, are regarded as having a sixth sense about things that humans do not foresee or pick up on. On Monday 21 February, Julie Eardley a SAFE volunteer and supporter had her own fortunate experience with animal intuition. While at home with her two children, nephew and two dogs, a storm started to brew in her street. Her female dog, Ali started to bark incessantly outside. She knew that her dogs (both adopted from SAFE) were growing more and more concerned and agitated with each minute. Finally to comfort the dogs she brought them inside the house. Clearly distressed, Julie hoped that they would settle down by being inside the house with the family. It was not five minutes after Ali’s warning barking that a tornado

Less then a minute later it was gone, but having done enough damage to make the home unlivable. After surveying the damage, she thought back to Ali’s obvious distress and panic that ended up potentially saving the life of herself and the family’s other dog Boof. Disregarding the damage to their home, Julie was simply relieved that her family and her pets were SAFE.

It’s just a twin thing Twins, triplets, quadruplets and more will join in and celebrate Multiple Birth Awareness Week (MBAW) from 13 to 20 March. MBAW is a nationally annual event that celebrates the joy of parenting multiples, but it also aims at educating communities and professionals about the challenges these parents face. Karratha is home to a few families with twins, with one set of triplets born last week. Eight mothers to twins and now triplets in Karratha have formed a mothers group, meeting once a month. Chelsea Elmer, mother to twins Jai and Malcolm said that there is an automatic bond between mothers that have twins because of that mutual understanding. “Everything is harder having twins” she said. “They do everything together, when one is

Last week’s competition at Karratha Golf Club was the Monthly Mug event sponsored by Air Dynamics and Darren Beier, the Karratha Golf Professional. A strong field of sixty eight golfers turned out to test their mettle in this stroke event. The course may be looking fantastic, but with every Beauty there is a Beast, and the seasonal hazards of water on the course and prolific growth in the rough make the playing just a little more difficult than normal. Karratha BMX Riders to Bring Home State Plates By Nick Muller Last weekend over 500 BMX riders from around the State including 22 riders from the Karratha BMX Club travelled to Perth to compete in the 2011 BMX State Titles. The Westside BMX Club in Balcatta have been busy over the last few months rebuilding their track and preparing to host the Titles and their hard work paid off with a well run event. With a six metre high start ramp, riders were a little bit intimidated when they first arrived at the track but after Pre State events and practise sessions in the week leading up to the State Titles, all of the Karratha riders soon felt comfortable riding down the ramp. Saturday morning saw the official opening and riders march past before the Sprockets and Cruisers took to the track. There were five Karratha riders competing on Saturday, they were Rodney Gethin (45+ Cruiser), Greg Kiehne (40 – 44 Cruisers), Patricia Kiehne (19+ Women’s Cruiser), Teagan Singer (18 and under Women’s Cruiser) and Abbie Kiehne (Girls Sprockets). All riders did extremely well with Rodney taking out the number 3WA plate and Teagan taking out the 7WA plate. Sunday saw the twenty inch class riders on the track for their races; the first three or four races of the day gave an indication of how hard everyone was trying with several riders coming off in each race. The first aiders were kept busy but fortunately there were no serious injuries. Karratha was again well represented with eighteen riders competing in the twenty inch class, these riders were Patrick Kiehne (8yo boys), Brady Kirkwood (9yo boys), Brodie Dewacht (9yo boys), Cruz Musitano (10yo boys), Dylan Bennetts (10yo boys), Elijah Lyon (10yo boys), Ryley Hinchcliffe (10yo boys), Jed Bullen (10yo boys), Will Kiehne (10yo boys), Callum Kirkwood (11yo boys), William Gethin (11yo boys), Dylan Muller (11yo boys), Isaac Lyon (13yo boys), Jarrod Dewacht (13yo

boys), Toby Muller (13yo boys), Michael Burch 15 (15yo boys), Macie Bennetts (12yo girls) and Teagan Singer (14yo girls ). This was the first event of this size for a number of Karratha riders and although overwhelmed by the number of riders and the sheer size of the event, all riders did the Karratha BMX Club proud and showed how hard they had been training over the summer months. Even though a couple of riders were unlucky enough to fall off, they dusted themselves off and were back on their bikes chasing other riders down as quick as they could.

A number of riders made the finals with the following riders taking home State plates meaning that they finished in the top eight for their age group Brady 6WA, Cruz 2WA, Dylan Bennetts 5WA, Isaac 3WA and Macie 4WA. With the State Titles over for 2011 the Karratha BMX Club will now concentrate on getting their race season underway. The BMX track has held up well to the rain that we have had this year but will still need some work to get it ready for riders to begin racing.

The BMX season will start on the 25 March with a Fun Night for Club members and then a “Come and Try” day on the 27 March from 3pm.
