Braving the shave Many took the plunge and shaved their head for the Leukaemia Foundation’s World’s Greatest Shave on 12 March at the South Hedland Shopping Centre. Organised by the The Port Hedland Chamber of Commerce (PHCCI) along with hairdresser Siti Sulaiman, people queued up between 10am and 1pm to either shave their hair or colour it. The cost was $15 for shaving and $5 for colour and in total they managed to raise $856. Nasyitah Westley, PHCCI said “The PHCCI have supported the event for over 12 years now and we are proud of the generous Hedland

“Everyone has been wonderful and extremely supportive – especially everyone at the Town” she said.

Nur decided to participate in the fundraiser after seeing so many women do it in the past.

“The Esplanade Hotel have been great too, hosting the fundraiser for me and the PHCCI have been supportive as well.

“Last year so many women came up and shaved their heads without even a second thought and I thought wow, I could do that and raise lots of money too!” she said. Nur said that everyone had shown so much support at the fundraiser held the night prior

Hedland gets cleaned up On Saturday 5 March, Jaxon and the Town of Port Hedland organised the cleanup of a car dump site near mangrove areas in Pretty Pool. The original plan was to remove one car body from the site – however Jaxon took the extra community initiative, arranged for an extra skip bin and spent a couple of hours clearing away a few more car bodies and extra scrap metal debris. “Jaxon’s actions demonstrate the type of community spirit and resourcefulness which allows the town to remain beautiful and tidy. “I am extremely appreciative of the efforts Jaxon has undertaken and hope to see other local businesses and organisations carry out similar initiatives,” said Mayor Kelly Howlett. Over 30 volunteers participated in this year’s Clean Up Australia Day, with South Hedland New Living cleaning up South Hedland, Town of Port Hedland cleaning up Pretty Pool and Care for Hedland cleaning up Cemetery Beach.

Pilbara Waste donated 12 skip bins over the weekend at the various cleanup sites. Local primary schools, Baler Primary and Cassia Primary, also participated on Friday 4 March by cleaning up in and around their school area. A total of 56 bags of rubbish were collected between the two schools. The 2011 Clean Up Australia Day was supported by the Town of Port Hedland, South Hedland New Living, Department of Housing and Works, Jaxon, Care for Hedland Association, McDonald’s South Hedland, Muffin Break South Hedland and Pilbara Waste.

Roebourne Shire Council President Nicole Lockwood said the use of social media will give time-struggled people living and working in the Shire an easy way to offer their opinions online. “Social media will be used in addition to the usual online and hard copy surveys to gather feedback on how the community perceives our performance,” Councillor Lockwood said. “The Shire of Roebourne Facebook page is now up-andrunning and includes a link to our online survey, which only takes a few minutes to complete. “Those who don’t have time to complete the survey can simply post a comment or just view the latest news and photos, which will be updated regularly.” Cr Lockwood said the survey was tailored to both fly-in, fly-out (FIFO) workers and permanent residents, with specific questions

included for each group. “As part of our Karratha: City of the North Plan we must attract people to live and work in our region and that includes FIFO workers, who may look to become permanent residents here,” she said. “This survey will provide us with an opportunity to determine what we must do to attract these FIFO workers to relocate here along with their families. “It will also allow us to ensure we are meeting the expectations of our existing permanent population.” The online survey will also be available via the Shire of Roebourne homepage at www. roebourne.wa.gov.au. Plus, survey booths will be in place at Centro Karratha, Karratha Airport and the Shire Administration Office on Welcome Road. Participants in the survey will have the option of entering a draw to win an Apple iPad. The 2011 Community Survey will commence on March 14 and run for a few weeks.

St Paul’s help to clean up As part of Clean Up Australia Day, students from Year 6S and 7M at St Paul's' Primary, along with their teachers Mrs Nancy Spiteri and Miss Queva Mills participated in a huge clean up last Friday 4 March. Collecting rubbish from the school perimeter and grounds, proved a fun competition between the upper primary students and raised the awareness of rubbishing the environment. Both integrated the annual event in classroom studies about the environment. After one hour of picking up rubbish, the students managed to collect a shopping trolley full plus 8 big rubbish bags.

Newman Airport welcome a Boeing 737 A Qantas Boeing 737 aircraft scheduled passenger service landed at Newman airport for the first time last week, marking the culmination of two years of planning. “We have always anticipated that Newman Airport would grow significantly in passenger numbers and the arrival of the Boeing 737 is testimony to that prediction” Shire of East Pilbara Acting CEO Sian Appleton. “The Shire of East Pilbara,

along with various funding partners including Billiton Iron Ore, has invested almost $30 million upgrading this facility since 2006. “As Newman continues to grow, the Shire continues our commitment to ensuring the airport is equipped with first-rate facilities to accommodate this growth for many years to come” she added. Recent developments to Newman Airport include an additional taxiway

and three bays capable of accommodating B737 and A320 aircraft. Newman airport has seen significant expansion since it was first constructed as a dedicated mine site airport in 1967. Today, more than 200,000 passengers use the airport each year. In 2009, Newman Airport received the Australian Airports Association Award for Aviation Excellence for the category of ‘Major Airports’.

Record manganese shipment from Port Hedland Mineral Resources Limited (ASX:MIN; MRL; the Company) announced on 15 March that it has exported the largest manganese shipment to sail from an Australian port through its subsidiary, Process Minerals International. The Bulk Pangaea, a 74,000 tonne Panamax carrier, left from Port Hedland in February 2011 carrying a record load of 71,343 tonnes of Process Minerals International’s MI manganese ore destined for Northern China. Mr Peter Wade, Mineral Resources Executive Chairman said “This shipment of premium grade manganese from Process Minerals International’s Pilbara mines represents a significant

milestone for the group’s expanding resource business. “Exporting manganese in these larger volumes will improve efficiency and also enable Process Minerals to service expanded ferro-alloy in the future.” “Process Minerals Internationals has exported manganese and iron ore from Australia since the early 1990’s developing a reputation for quality products and reliable delivery with a wide range of Chinese customers. MRL exported a total of 1.5 million tonnes of manganese and iron ore in the six months to December 2010 and posted a record profit result for the period.

Nicole Stein said it was an opportunity for West Pilbara Iron Ore Project employees to contribute to the environment and local community early in the project’s life. “As the approvals for our project progress, we’ve just hit the ground with full time staff in Karratha, and it was great to see our people and supporting contractors out in force at the weekend,” Ms Stein said. “We applaud CARE for spearheading a movement to rid the Shire of Roebourne of rubbish. This locally-driven

initiative made it easy for a new resource and infrastructure project such as the API West Pilbara Iron Ore Project to give immediate support to a worthy programme.” The Roebourne Shire focused on beaches for the annual March event which coincided with the Department of Environment’s Clean Marine week. As well as collecting rubbish, participants raised money for the flood-affected residents from Carnarvon. Helping API with logistics were Paul

Rowley from Coffey Environments and Robin Congreve from Global Marine, while further assistance was provided by contractors AECOM, Go Marine, J&S Drilling, Van Oord Dredging, Boskalis Australia and Offshore Floatels. The Department of Transport kindly donated two large skip bins for rubbish collection. Up to a dozen API employees, contractors and family members spent several hours collecting rubbish from Anketell Point and Johns Creek Boat Harbour.

Advanced airport check in technology goes regional Checking in with Qantas will soon be easier than ever as they introduce their Next Generation Check-In technology into regional airports. Qantas CEO Alan Joyce said this was a significant milestone in the program and regional Australia. "Next Generation Checkin provides our customers with a smarter, faster checkin experience and we're excited to be delivering this technology for customers in our regional ports," said Mr Joyce. "When our customers told us that queuing was a point of pain we responded. “Next Generation Checkin has been successfully implemented in Perth, Sydney and Melbourne and has dramatically reduced domestic check-in times for customers allowing them to move through the check-in area with speed and ease.

"Twenty-one regional airports, including sixteen QantasLink ports, will receive Next Generation Check-in technology over the next four months," he said. Albury, Rockhampton, Karratha, Broome, Coffs Harbour and Mackay are the first ports to benefit from the introduction of Q Card Reader technology, and will be shortly followed by Emerald, Hobart, Kalgoorlie, Port Hedland and Port Macquarie. Mr Joyce said Platinum, Gold and Silver Frequent Flyers and Qantas Club members will be checked in within seconds with one touch of their Qantas card on the Q Card Readers. Q Card Readers will also be installed in Gladstone, Port Macquarie, Tamworth, Alice Springs, Newman, Wagga Wagga, Townsville, Launceston, Paraburdoo, Darwin and Cairns. "From May, Q Bag

Grant for regional development The Minister for Regional Australia Simon Crean announced a $1 billion five-year program known as the Regional Development Australia Fund in his opening address to a national forum of community leaders in the first week of March. The Fund will boost economic and community development in regional Australia and is a new approach to unlocking the potential of Australia’s regions by focusing on locally driven solutions to regional needs. Regional Development Australia Pilbara was represented by Board member Veronica Rodenberg at a twoday National Regional Development Australia (RDA) Forum on March 3–4. Mr Crean told the forum that each RDA committee would receive an immediate grant of $25,000 to strengthen their ability to represent their local areas.

The Minister also announced the establishment of a $1billion Regional Development Australia Fund – with the first funding allocation to commence on July 1, 2011. “The Regional Development Australia Fund is a new way of investing in the regional Australia over the next five years,” Mr Crean said. “The Fund has a clear focus on local solutions, complete transparency and maximising long-term economic benefits and I look forward to receiving applications for projects that stack up. Regional Development Australia (RDA) Pilbara chair Collene Longmore welcomed the two funding announcements and said the RDA committee would have a central role to play in the assessment of applications. “RDA’s are crucial to this Regional Development Australia Fund. “The Federal Government has made it clear that only applications

that are backed by local RDA’s will be considered for funding approval,” (RDA) Pilbara chair Collene Longmore said. Mr Crean said resources had been allocated as part of the agreement struck with the Independents last September. “This is a great day for regional Australia and today’s funding announcements are proof of the Federal Government’s commitment to empowering local communities and regions,” Mr Crean said. The National RDA Forum was held at the Canberra Convention Centre and was the first meeting of its kind this Parliamentary year. Guest speakers included Mike Kaiser from NBNCo and Michael Deegan from Infrastructure Australia. Journalist Kerry O’Brien acted as the facilitator for the dinner and panel discussions and arts identity Robyn Archer spoke at a cocktail dinner.

Homeless man hands in found money A Pennsylvania homeless man cast aside thoughts of his own economic troubles and returned nearly $US1500 ($1419) that he found on the street, KYW-TV reported.

Flood appeal doubles it’s target The Shire of Roebourne President, Nicole Lockwood began a flood appeal early 2011 for the victims of the Queensland and Carnarvon floods and has since managed to raise over $40,000 after an original target of $20,000. Join in the cycle up to Broome The Karratha Police have already started training for the annual Karratha to Broome Bike Ride held in August 2011 and are urging the community to join them. The Karratha Police hold the event each year to raise funds for the WA Police Legacy, a charity that supports families of deceased Police Officers. The WA Police Legacy currently support 309 widows, one widower and 41 children under 20 years of age. The distance cycled will be 800km, taking approximately 34 hours in total to cycle. Those who turned up to the Karratha Tavern on Saturday, March 12th had the chance to see the number one Dubstep, Drum and Bass DJ Greg Packer, who has had this title for 11 years in a row. Local DJ Luke 'Fl3ggless' Flegeltaub who also runs the business Suspect Sounds organised the event and chose Greg Packer as he has never been to Karratha before and thought the audience needed a change in music. "I thought the town needed a different style instead of hearing the same music all the time," he said. "Greg has never performed in Karratha and on his Facebook he wrote that Karratha was in his top 5 gigs out of the 22 years of performing. "The love he felt on Saturday night from the audience he said was unbelievable. "He is amazing, he has travelled all over the world to perform, and it's great he agreed to come to Karratha." Local DJ Flowers started off the night and Fl3ggless said he did a great job with his ability to break beats. "I first performed with DJ

Flowers 9 months ago at the Karratha Tavern and I thought he was a great, straight forward guy," he said. "What sets him apart (like every other DJ does) is how much effort he puts out, the different music he plays and also his ability to break beats. "I didn't play on the weekend as I choose to leave it up the Flowers and Greg. "I choose to stand back and just have a good time like the audience. I thought there was more than enough quality on stage without me up there." However, the locals of Karratha won't get to see Luke perform for 6 weeks. Lucky guy is heading off to America but will be back in time to perform at the Karratha Tavern for the event Pilbara Pub on May 9th with DJ Panda and Flowers. Pilbara Pub is just local DJ's performing and promoting what they have to offer. The first Pilbara Pub was held on the 4th of December with a dedication to Luke's sister Lauren Flegeltaub who passed away 4 months ago. "So many people came down to support the local DJ's in the first Pilbara Pub so I hope we get the same audience reaction on May 9th," he said.

St Luke's College Year 12 students had the opportunity to see what is available for them including different trades with the help of Challenger Institute of Technology in Perth while they were on their year 12 camp. Around 19 students arrived at the Challenger Institute of Technology Beaconsfield campus on Tuesday, March 1st and were shown around the Visage for beauty and fashion then a presentation from the engineering lecturers including a tour of the workshop. Career Development Advisor for Challenger Institute of Technology Robert Palmer said although based in Fremantle, with campuses throughout the southern suburbs of Perth, Challenger Institute specialises in training that has particular appeal to students from WA’s northwest. “From construction to engineering to hospitality, our programs offer career choices that Karratha students may find perfectly suit their aspirations.” “While we get a lot of Perth schools visiting our campuses, the St Luke’s visit was quite

special – and judging by the questions and interest shown by the students, it was well received by them as well as us!” added Mr Palmer. Then on the second day, Thursday March 3rd, program manager Darren Reynolds and advanced skills lecturer Ron Duffield gave the students a chance to try a few different construction trades including carpentry and joinery. St Luke's College teacher Melanie Kearney said it was a real eye opener for the students. "It shows them what is available to them in the future and also gave them a rundown of what is and is not acceptable as apprentices," she said. "It was great, a lot of students are now interested in similar things and we actually have a couple of former students enrolled at the Challenger Institute of Technology." Although with a lot to offer Challenger Institute of Technology do not often have regional schools come tour. "We encourage schools to visit and give the students a tour of the facilities and the courses on offer," Palmer said.

Mandalas By Naomi Stanitzki

The Sanskrit word ‘mandala’ means circle. The sacred art of both Hindu and Buddhist religions is probably the first thing that comes to mind if you’ve seen this form of art before, the basis for which is usually a square with four gates with a circle in the centre. You may also be familiar with the Tibetan branch of Buddhism that has developed the mandala into sand painting which I love so much because it truly embodies the whole concept of art being about the process of creating rather than the finished product. The monks of this religion will spend days, sometimes weeks creating beautifully intricate mandalas made of coloured sand and then take them outside and allow the wind to blow them away. The thing that I find most intriguing about the mandala is that it can be found in the spiritual practices of all sorts of traditions and religions all over the world. For example you can see them in the form

of stained glass windows in many Christian churches, the Bora rings of Indigenous Australians, the Dream Catchers of the Native Americans or the Celtic knots of early Irish Pagans. Ultimately the mandala always comes back to the idea of wholeness and can be looked at as a model for life itself and a reminder of our relationship to the infinite ‘circle of life’. I think the prevalence of this form of art in spiritual traditions all over the world is largely due to the occurrence of mandalas in nature. For example you can see a mandala in a flower or a snow flake, you can see it in the cycles of nature and the way the moon circles the earth, and the earth circles the sun. Mandalas can also be seen in the more metaphorical circles in our lives like circles of friends and families. The use of the mandala as a tool for psychological exploration has become more popular in recent times as a tool used in art therapy and as a means for meditation. I paint mandalas because I find it relaxing. I enjoy creating patterns and I love the overall aesthetic of a circular picture. They are somehow just calming to look at. So I find satisfaction in the process and the final product. If you’re interested in creating your own mandalas whether it’s just for fun, as a means to self exploration or for meditation why not start by printing out and colouring some mandalas from the internet. Newman students have their say with ‘Quizdom’ The students at Newman Senior High School had the opportunity to use cuttingedge technology to voice their thoughts about the issues most important to them when they let ‘Quizdom’ do the talking recently. ‘Quizdom’ is an Audience Response System (also known as an audience clicker) which puts a wireless response pad in the hands of the user. The user is asked a variety of questions and their responses collected. The resulting data will be used as part of an analysis to form the basis of a comprehensive East Pilbara Youth Strategy. The project was conducted by the Youth Advisory Council of Western Australia (YACWA) and has been made possible with financial assistance from the Shire’s investment partner BHP Billiton Iron Ore. According to YACWA’s Executive Officer Craig Comrie, Quizdom is always a hit with young people. “We are really pleased with the enthusiasm shown for Quizdom and we truly believe it helps us to understand what young people are really thinking”he said. “The technology combined with annonymity is a winning formula.” The results of the Quizdom survey indicate that students at Newman Senior High

School are most concerned about underage drinking in their community. Importantly, the majority of students interviewed indicated they would like to be involved with community strategies which combat underage drinking and other anti-social behaviour. The students were also adamant that boredom is a key problem amongst the young people in Newman and many suggested the need for a café or club for young people to use outside of school and work hours. “With the advent of iPods, instant messaging, advanced gaming systems, multi-use mobile phones and other wireless gadgets it is fitting that the young people of the East Pilbara can have their say using this fabulous technology” said Shire of East Pilbara CEO Allen Cooper. “The beauty of ‘Quizdom’ is that it provides the opportunity for young people to participate anonymously with confidence, removing the embarrassment or fear of speaking in front of peers and adults. “It is crucial that the young people of the East Pilbara have a say about what they believe is important to them. “By engaging in this study we hope to identify the issues most important to them and use the findings to assist with the feasibility of a purpose built Youth Centre” he said.

Whilst most of Australia’s property markets have shown little or no growth over the past 2 years (some have even dropped in value), it is clear that the ‘hot spots’ are those that are driven by the resources sector. Basin, Mt Isa, Gladstone, Townsville.… The Surat Basin and Western Downs region is poised to be one of the hottest markets as massive investment in gas exploration and extraction, coal mining and power generation starts to have an impact. There is over $100 billion of investment planned for the region through new projects, expansion and new infrastructure. Up to 50,000 skilled workers will be recruited to deliver on these projects. It seems that the Surat Basin – Gladstone gas projects will become as signiﬁcant as those of the North West Shelf in terms of economic contribution. For investors, the time seems to be right to get into property in the Surat Basin with house and land packages priced from only $359,000 in the sought after

Dalby Meadows estate. Compared to prices in Mackay, Gladstone, Emerald and Moranbah where comparable homes are typically $450,000 to well over $600,000, it is clear that there is strong upside potential for capital growth in Dalby Meadows. According to Dalby Meadows’ developer Mike O’Farrell, “There is already an increase in demand for housing in the region and rental demand is strong. Property managers are telling us that the rents are on the rise again and that stock of good family homes is tight.” O’Farrell says he has seen the signs of imminent price rises in other Queensland markets before and that, “The planets seem to be aligned for Dalby and the Surat Basin property markets to jump in value signiﬁcantly over the short to medium term”.

Training with a buddy will help you stay motivated, you can both lift one another’s energy and encourage each other when the other is feeling flat depleted or tired. Organising extra walks around nature can be an opportunity for you to talk about your emotions and stay on track. Achieving your goal requires hard work, determination and focus and as humans, we have many distractions and obstacles that can knock us off course. Having a supportive confidante to talk to and share your personal goals with is a big motivator. With a dose of commitment, the right support and a good plan,

yes, you can do it! Opening our mind to other viewpoints and perspectives is a wonderful thing. When we’re in pursuit of our goals, sometimes we can become so single minded that we misinterpret the situation and slip off track. For example, we can make excuses for not sticking to our diet or exercise plan (eg I haven’t got time) and not realise that we’re simply just making excuses. At times like this, having someone there to be honest and give you hard core facts, in a respectful manner is exactly what is required. A non-negotiable aspect in realizing any challenging goal is to maintain a positive “cando” attitude. Bay Village brave it and shave it

Running for more than a decade, the Mothers Day Classic fun run has provided communities with a great way to celebrate Mothers Day, as well as raise funds for breast cancer. The event will be held at the Karratha Entertainment Centre Oval on Searipple Road, Bulgarra. Entrants have the choice of a 4km walk starting at 7.45am, a 4km run starting at 7.35am or an 8km run for the more energetic starting at 7.10am. For those who would rather watch, there will be plenty to do around the sidelines with entertainment and activities for the kids. The organising committee, made up of Karratha mums, are urging the Pilbara community to get involved this year. “This is a really important cause, because we know that one in nine woman will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their life time” Leanne Brennan said, Chair of the Committee.

Residents and staff at Bay Village braved it and shaved it for the Leukaemia Foundation’s World’s Greatest Shave on 10 - 12 March. Organised by Bay Village, Active Lifestyle Coaches Sonja Dunn and Alana Pritchard, the event was held over three days and they managed to raise over $4,000. Resident Bruce Searle raised $2,000 to shave his head, beard, arms and chest which hairdresser Lizzie Richardson had the pleasure of doing on 10 March at the Bay Village Wet Mess. Another four residents joined in the events on the night, raising extra funds. During lunch on 11 March, the ESS staff at Woodside Onshore collected donations for staff members Kelvin Taylor, Steward Mills & Eugene Koekemoer to shave their heads, attracting three more recruits and raising $1,600. On the Saturday evening the festivities began with residents paying to wrestle in sumo suits whilst Lizzie Richardson, Sonja Dunn and Alana Pritchard ran the hairdressers, charging $10 for a cut and $5 for colour. Alana Pritchard said that not one hair cut ended up this cheap with residents paying more to see their friends shave it all off. The ESS NYFL staff also sponsored generously for their manager Ken Younger to colour his hair pink and Maintenance Fred Batchelor to shave his chest. These little lizards have the Latin name of Pygopus nigriceps meaning ‘black headed rump foot’. This genus of legless lizards have the largest hind limb remnants of any members of the PYGOPODIDAE family. These remnants, which lay either side of the vent, are paddle like in shape and contain all the bones that form the leg and toes of an ‘ordinary’ lizard. At first glance you could be forgiven for thinking this little reptile is a baby gwadar when in actual fact it’s not. A lot of these little lizards are often killed needlessly by this misguided impression. One of the reasons they are often mistaken for a snake is when threatened they will raise their head and flatten their neck (like a snake). One distinctive difference

is the tail, which is a lot fatter than a snakes’. These lizards can drop their tails just like a skink and if you look closely at the one in the photo you can see a pattern change about a quarter of the way down the body where this one has re grown its tail, something a snake can’t do! These lizards feed on spiders, scorpions and insects and will also consume spiders’ egg sacks. Any bodily juices spilled from prey during feasting is quickly lapped up (YUK!). They will also eat fleshy fruits. The Western scaly-foot grow to about 40cm in length and the females only produce two eggs per season. They are a common throughout most of Western Australia (including the Pilbara & Kimberly), all bar the South West.

We have had an increase in Parvo cases this year here in Karratha, it is really important that all your dogs vaccinations are up to date. Parvovirus is a highly contagious disease that causes vomiting and diarrhoea in dogs. It is spread by contact with contaminated faeces and contaminated objects. It is extremely resistant to the environment and can survive on objects like clothing, shoes and floors for five months or more. If your dog is unwell, avoid exposure to other dogs and areas where other dogs frequent to avoid spread of the virus. Who is susceptible to parvovirus? Unvaccinated or inadequately

vaccinated adult dogs, puppies who have not completed their course of vaccinations and dogs housed in large numbers in close confinement eg boarding kennels, animal shelters are more likely to be susceptible to infection. How do I know if my dog has parvovirus? Signs of parvovirus includes loss of appetite, severe vomiting, diarrhoea (this may contain blood), dehydration and/or weakness. A bedside test using a stool sample can be performed at your veterinary clinic which may confirm the diagnosis. Without treatment, approximately 95% of dogs suffering from parvovirus will die. With treatment, survival can range from 65-95%.

How is parvovirus treated? Treatment of infected patients consists of supportive care to correct dehydration and electrolyte abnormalities, fluid losses, control vomiting and prevent secondary infections. There is no specific anti-viral therapy for parvovirus unlikely the influenza virus. Quarantine from other dogs is required to prevent spread of the disease. Treatment can be very expensive therefore the disease is best prevented by ensuring that vaccinations are carried out appropriately. Karratha swimmers a success at Country Pennants By Janine Wain

The team had some great swims and came 5th overall, finishing above Geraldton. Considering their extremely late start to the season due to the pool repairs, the disruption to training caused by several cyclones and the tornado, and the fact that they have just been promoted to 'A' division, this is a pretty impressive result. The team returned to Karratha on Monday 7 March after enjoying a well earned complementary team breakfast supplied by Scott from McDonalds in Kalgoorlie. The trip to Kambalda was made possible due to the hard work and fundraising efforts of the Karratha Amateur Swimming Club and the fabulous sponsorship they received. Without the assistance of such sponsors, events like this would not be possible. The Karratha Amateur Swimming Club would like to thank their Country Pennants sponsors and also club sponsors for the 2010/2011 season for playing a vital role in enabling us to attend these events. Over the long weekend almost 600 swimmers converged at Kambalda for the 52nd annual Country Pennants swimming competition. Thirty clubs competed in over 500 races in 5 different divisions. After winning the “B” division last year, Karratha were promoted to “A” division, competing against Geraldton, Albany, Bunbury, Mandurah and Peel. 38 people travelled from Karratha down to Kambalda for the event. This included 11 eager parents/ officials, three coaches Kristi Thomas, Kylie Rann and Erin Shaylor and our team consisting of 25 swimmers ageing from 7-41, Stevie Stanley, Keldon Wain, Riley Grosse, Isobel Norris, Finlay Moore, Mikaela Wilson, Marni Taylor, Ross Rann, Jack Clarke, Lily Moore, Luci Barron, Jack Moloney, Ben Collins, Amara Fowke, Grace Williamson, Mikaela Rice, Matthew Oronce, Chloe Murphy, Aletta Fowke, Brennan Stewart, Max Payne, Declan Wilson, Shenae Murphy, Erin Shaylor and Shane Moore. Luckily, team preparations weren’t hindered too much by the pool closure in the weeks leading up to the competition. Fortunately, Shane Byrne from Bay Village allowed the team to train in the Bay Village pool in the lead up to Country Pennants. The team is very grateful for this as it allowed them to maintain their training schedule. The team arrived in Kalgoorlie on Thursday 3 March and spent Friday morning touring Kalgoorlie, visiting the mining hall of fame, panning for gold, watching a gold pouring session, taking an underground mine tour and visiting the super pit before heading out to Kambalda for a training session. The first day, saw the team rise early and board the bus in Kalgoorlie

at 5.15am and head to Kambalda for warm ups and to commence the first day of competition. Unfortunately, the drizzle and cold weather were a little extreme for the Karratha swimmers so they opted for a land warm up as the pool water was a little colder than they were accustomed. However, by day two the weather had warmed up and the swimmers were performing awesomely. The Karratha team won 13 individual medals at the meet, with Keldon Wain winning three gold and one silver, Mikaela Wilson winning gold in the butterfly, Stevie Stanley winning three bronze medals and Riley Grosse, Matthew Oronce, Jack Clarke, Ross Rann and Erin Shaylor each gaining a bronze medal. We also saw some extremely close races with Shane Moore, Brennan Stewart, Matthew Oronce and Isobel Norris narrowly missing bronze, being pipped by one hundredths of a second in individual races. The swimmers also had team success with Mikaela Wilson, Marni Taylor, Finlay Moore and Isobel Norris earning a bronze medal in the 10 and Under Girls Medley Relay and Brennan Stewart, Max Payne, Matthew Oronce and Declan Wilson winning bronze in the 16 and Under Freestyle Relay. Along with medal wins, the team also accomplished some fantastic personal best times. Amara Fowke, Luci Barron and Jack Moloney achieved new personal best times in all 4 strokes, with Amara smashing her personal best times by almost 10 seconds in three strokes. Jack Moloney annihilated his backstroke PB by 8 seconds and took 5 seconds off his breastroke. Brennan Stewart, Riley Grosse, Jack Clarke, Mikaela Wilson and Declan Wilson also made huge improvements in their personal best butterfly times.
