Working with children and the law
• Some locals who helped raise money and awareness for Breast Cancer.
Running for a cause The Town of Port Hedland are providing the Mother’s Day Classic walk or run event for the second time in Port Hedland history on May 8. Its purpose is to raise money for National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) research programs and awareness of breast cancer in the community. The money raised by the Mother’s Day Classic supports quality and cutting edge research across Australia. And since 1998, the Mother’s Day Classic has raised $7.8million for National Breast Cancer Foundation research programs. Recreation Coordinator
Nicole Rouckens said last year was the first time the event was ever run. “Last year had a positive response and we raised about $35,000,” she said. “We received a lot of request feedback from the community to hold this event so we decided to go with it. “Even if we don’t earn the amount we did last year to be able to provide this event for the community, for a greater number of participates and community spirit will be great. “Last year everyone dressed up plus you can either do the 4km walk or the 10km run for a little bit of competition.
“The same as last year we will have pink champagne at the finish line and the Esplanade have donated platers of food for the day.” The success of the Mother’s Day Classic is due to the hard work and commitment of volunteers across the country who are willing to work together and go the extra mile for a cause that affects so many lives – breast cancer. To join in with the fun head to www.mothersdayclassic. com.au to register. It starts at 3pm for a 3.30pm start at the Cemetery Beach Park. Entry fee is $15 per adult and $8 per child under the age of 17.
Barring notices issued Two people have been issued Barring Notices from the Director of Racing, Gaming and Liquor, Mr Barry Sargeant this year. In November 2009 and May 2010, a 54 year Port Hedland woman employed as a Crowd Controller assaulted patrons at a west-end Hotel in Port Hedland. She was fined $120 for Assault Occasioning Bodily Harm and $750 for Common Assault. She has been banned from being employed in or entering any licensed premises for 3 years. A 38 year old male from Port Hedland has been issued a notice barring him from attending licensed premises (except a Liquor Store) for six months as a result of being charged with Disorderly Conduct in a west end licensed premises. Port Hedland Police Officer in Charge, Sergeant Richard Moore said it’s a timely warning.
“If you are disorderly or assault other patrons or staff in a licensed premises the Director of Racing, Gaming and Liquor will ban you from licensed premises and if the evidence supports a charge you will face the Courts,” he said. “The community expects to be able to have a drink and socialise with friends and not have to put up with unruly behaviour or witness assaults.” On Friday night, March 25, a 19 year old male had his jaw fractured as a result of an incident at a local Hotel. Police are appealing for witnesses to an altercation inside the Pier Hotel at about 11.40pm and then outside the Hotel a few minutes later. Witnesses are asked to contact Sergeant Richard Moore on 9173 8100 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 with any information.
The Town of Port Hedland, in partnership with WA Sports Federation and Department of Sport and Recreation, will be hosting a workshop for local clubs and associations regarding working with children legislation. The workshop, ‘Understanding and Complying with the Working with Children (WWC) Legislation’, will include an overview of the current legislation, compliance issues and how to create safe environments for children.
The Town will be running two sessions on Tuesday 12 April, one for the general public from 2pm to 3.30pm, and one for local junior clubs and associations from 6pm to 7.30pm. The workshop is compulsory for all junior clubs and associations. For more information or to register for the workshop, please contact Town Club and Project Development Officer Sarah Cunningham on 9158 9389 or email cpdo@ porthedland.wa.gov.au
Create the brand for your town Town of Port Hedland are inviting the community to work together in creating a motto which will become part of the organisation’s branding and marketing. Currently with the steady progress of all its major projects and the recent launch of the Port Hedland City Growth Plan, the Town is moving fast towards achieving it’s vision of becoming a Pilbara City. Projects such as the MultiPurpose Recreation Centre, JD Hardie Youth Centre, Marquee Park and redevelopment of the South Hedland CBD will transform Hedland into a city which a community of 40,000 residents will call home. “The Town is looking for a motto which captures Hedland and illustrates our vision of becoming a vibrant and attractive city – we are a town of many firsts, such as the first
town in WA north of Geraldton to have a water-play park and the only town in the Pilbara to be based by the coast,” said Mayor Kelly Howlett. “Council’s vision for Port Hedland is for it to grow into regional city with a unique North West lifestyle where workers choose to make it their permanent home and raise their families.” Local students from the primary schools and high school will be participating in a visioning workshop at Council Chambers on Thursday 31 March as part of a community consultation. All suggestions must be received by Friday 15 April and can be addressed to Publicity Officer, Town of Port Hedland, PO Box 41, Port Hedland, WA, 6721 or emailed to council@ porthedland.wa.gov.au.

My favourite teacher in primary school was Mrs Munyard because she gave us ‘Scratch n Sniff’ stickers for exemplary work. We are, however, coming to that time of term where kids should be giving the teachers
stickers for their efforts in what must be the longest term in the known universe. Hang in there folks! Almost on the home stretch. Almost!
How many peas? One’s got plaits down to her tail all dipped in fingerpaint. One’s got fairy bread for lunch which one might well call quaint. One’s got shoes on two wrong feet; he put them on himself. Ones got laces wrapped around his ankles, which now swell.
One is sitting at her desk, rather catatonic, wondering when the term will end; it’s time for gin and tonic. And this is just the teachers. Term one’s long and full. And if we’re using big words might well call it interminable.
One’s got lice. One’s got sores. One’s got chicken pox. One’s got glue upon her eyes and paint in her lunchbox. One’s got snot below her lip she’s blowing with her hanky. One’s got a flashing headband which plays Justin Bieber…swanky.
But, then… little Charlotte smiles, gives her teacher a sticker – a giraffe. Cheeky Macey tells a joke which makes the teacher laugh. Robert paints a picture with spots and dots and drool and gives it to his teacher, with an apple, ‘’Cause you’re cool!’
One’s still singing, ‘Row your boat gently down the stream.’ And when she sees a crocodile, she never forgets to scream. One’s got texta on her dress beneath her right armpit. One’s got a pea stuck up his nose; he thinks three more will fit.
Kaylee finds her cupcake (It’s a little bit squished, but hey) and hands it to her teacher, saying, ‘You need this today.’ And all the class together chant, ‘We love you – A LOT!’ They do it for the next three hours. It’s deafening…but hits the spot.
St Paul’s raises money on Harmony Day St Paul’s Primary School helped raised funds for Project Compassion and celebrate Harmony Day in just one day on Friday, March the 25th. Teacher Trista Andrews organised the event saying Harmony Day helps celebrate the diverse cultures in both the school and the community. “It is important to teach the children about Harmony Day as it’s a very multicultural country,” she said. “Also it teaches them the acceptance of each and everyone of us.” At recess the year six and sevens held a food stall selling foods from either their own cultures or other backgrounds. “Children also were able to wear free dress with a gold coin donation so money from that and the food stall were donated to Project Compassion,” Ms Andrews said. Year seven student Levi McCombe said that the food was really yummy and he learnt that red is a popular colour on flags. And year six students Amelia Greensill and Chelsea O’Leary said they both really liked the day as you get to share different information of cultures. “We get to learn about food and countries, its very important because we come from different places and we have the ability to show what we are about,” Greensill said.
• Aeimen Gill, Bethany Dick, Natasha Flaherty, Abbey Matthews and Daniel Cross
• Levi McCombe, Salvadore Southall-O’carroll and Dylan Grantham “It also shows that everyone should get along and that we are the same on the inside,” O’Leary said.

Hedland Mobile Windscreens Meet Chris May and Maxine Hartshorn, owners of the friendly family run Hedland Mobile Windscreens in Wedgefield. Hedland Mobile Windscreens does exactly what it says on the tin, mobile windscreen replacements, servicing the entire Hedland area. A friendly outgoing couple, Chris and Maxine are the brains behind the outfit. Chris and Maxine set up Hedland Mobile Windscreens in 2007, after recognising a much needed gap in the market. “When you’ve got a broken windscreen it’s not like you can drive anywhere to fix it,” explains Maxine, “So we set up Hedland Mobile Windscreens to service both the private and the commercial sector.” “We provide a broad spectrum of services,” Chris explains. “From mums wanting to get their windscreens fixed quickly and safely so they can take their children to and from school; “Haulage and courier companies who need to keep their vehicles on the road; to the mining sector who need to keep the LV’s and large machinery working as it can cost thousands of dollars per day in down time.” “We’ve got a specifically developed mine compliant truck which we use to visit the mine sites,” adds Maxine. “We get out to remote sites and fix the problem in one visit, saving them a fortune in
downtime.” Chris was bought up in Finuncane Island in the 70’s, Chris always called the region home, and finally returned to his roots in 2007 with his partner Maxine. The pair hasn’t looked back since and are both now proud to call Hedland home. “We’re proud to get involved in local events, we support children’s parties through the local radio, and we also support the local Golf Club,” Chris explains. “Although neither of us can play!” laughs Maxine. Hedland Mobile Windscreens will come to you wherever you are, however if you are ever in the area, it is worth popping down to the main warehouse to meet the whole team and see first hand the enthusiasm and experience there is behind the scenes. “We’ve got a fantastic team with us here,” a proud Chris explains. “Our new apprentice Kael Thompson is doing a great job, and our two fitters David Levingston and Danny Wilson both have a wealth of experience in their roles. “And Sue Andrews is our account guru!” Next time you’re stuck with a broken windscreen, give Chris and Maxine a call on 9172 5226 and they’ll come straight to the rescue!

Fifteen months and still waiting With a recent visit to Karratha and a little help from Member for the Central Kimberley-Pilbara region Tom Stephens, Shadow Education Minister Ben Wyatt said Education Minister Liz Constable has failed miserably to explain why the State’s draft Aboriginal Education Strategy had not yet been released. “She has admitted in Parliament she has not seen a long-overdue strategy to guide education of Western Australian Aboriginal children,” Wyatt said. “The strategy was to replace one that expired in 2008 and was supposed to commence at the beginning of 2010. “It is now almost a quarter of the way through 2011 and there is no sign of it. “The Education Minister is letting down Indigenous communities across the State.”
Mr Wyatt said the Minister constantly blamed her lack of action on the Commonwealth and her Department. “Dr Constable said the strategy needs to align with the Commonwealth and can’t be released until the national action plan by the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) had been formally signed off,” he said. “The Minister knows what’s in the COAG plan; the problem is she doesn’t know what’s in her own plan. “The Education Minister has failed to be across her Government’s agenda in the area of Indigenous education.” Mr Wyatt said of further concern is that funding has been cut for the Aboriginal Tutorial Assistance Scheme (ATAS) for Aboriginal students in year 11 and 12.
• Tom Stephens and Ben Wyatt. “ATAS has been extraordinarily successful in increasing the number of Aboriginal students graduating with a WA Certificate of Education,” he said.
“It not only effects the Aboriginal students but also the community as it limits jobs and lowers income. “The Minister needs to finalise the State’s Aboriginal Education Strategy and reinstate the ATAS so Western Australians can have some faith in the education of our State’s most vulnerable children.”
“To cut this funding, that is received from the Federal Government, is a total disappointment. “The aboriginal students are missing out and it is putting everyone at a disadvantage.
Dampier Highway project to commence
• The Community Reference Group.
The Dampier Highway Duplication Project Community Reference Group (CRG) held its first meeting with the joint venture partners contracted for the project. The CRG, set up by Main Roads WA and consisting of representatives from the local community, industry and the Shire of Roebourne, met with contractors Highway Albem on 10 March 2011. A joint venture between Highway Construction, Downer EDi Works and Albem Operations, the HWA team has been awarded the contract to design and construct the first stage of the 12.3km project, which will add two lanes to the Dampier Highway between Balmoral Road West and Bayly Avenue (airport turnoff). The new dual carriageway will include sealed shoulders, a new bridge over Seven Mile Creek,
improved intersections and the installation of three sets of traffic lights. Design is well underway, including on site utility adjustments and geotechnical assessment works, with construction of Stage 1 of the project from Balmoral Road West to Bayly Avenue (the airport turnoff) due to begin in late April 2011. To mark the commencement of work on the project, the Community Reference Group has changed its name to Construction Reference Group, and will continue to meet regularly with the contractors during the design and construction phase. During a presentation to the CRG, HWA outlined their approach to the project and committed to keeping local community informed about progress. “We recognise that this route is a
vital link for residents and industry in this part of the Pilbara,” HWA Project Manager John Powell said. “The growth in population and the expansion of industrial activity in Karratha and Dampier requires good quality infrastructure that will provide a safe and efficient route for all road users. “The Community Reference Group has worked hard to ensure that the voices of all stakeholders have been heard in the run up to the start of the work, and key issues addressed wherever possible. “We are looking forward to building on that solid foundation, and will be meeting with the Group regularly, as well as briefing local community organisations and providing project updates via a website, newsletters and local media.”

Music to help Mental Health issues Karratha and surrounding areas are no stranger to mental health issues and the damage it causes, but there might be a way to help and that’s through music. Pilbara Mental Health and Drug Service Manager Frances Keegan said that one in five people will suffer from mental health issues. “I think it is a wonderful opportunity for a musical group to express how some community members are affected by mental health,” he said. Music Feedback now in its third year was initiated by WA Department of Health Mental Health Division in 2009 with support from the WA Music Industry Association.
Their campaign being, ‘What if we talked about music the same way we talk about mental illness?’ According to Primack, Dalton, Carroll, Agarwal and Fine, 2008, research shows that exercise and music can quickly change a person's mood from sad to happy. So Music Feedback returns with their rocking third annual edition of the Music Feedback compilation CD / DVD, set to be distributed free of charge across Western Australia at National Youth Week Events (April 1-10). Due to significant interest across Australia, this project is aiming to go national in 2012. The project aims at targeting people aged
between 14-25 years old to encourage them to participate in music and healthy activities to improve their wellbeing and talk about mental health and get early help for any problems Their secondary aims are to increase mental health literacy in the WA community, reduce stigma and discrimination associated with mental illness and also promote mental health issues in the media and public forums. Sean Pollard from Split Seconds who performs on the CD said that he and his band are very keen to be involved with Music Feedback. “We'd seen it's success in previous years and really thought it was something
• Band Spilt Seconds who have given their time to help combat Mental Health issues that was worth getting behind,” he said. “Mental health is an important issue that should never be stigmatized so a program that not only helps anyone having a bad run, but also achieves this though music and the arts, is always going to be worth a bunch of our time."
Change the battery, save your life The Fire and Emergency Services Authority of Western Australia, together with Duracell were encouraging everyone to replace the batteries in their smoke alarms on April Fool’s Day as part of the campaign ‘Don’t be a fool, change your smoke alarm battery.’ Each year Firefighters from the Karratha Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service (KVFRS) change the batteries in smoke detectors at Karratha Masonic Village and this year was no exception with Firefighters Craig Watts and Liz Wright, and Secretary Kellye Mottershead doing

life insurance” he said.
“Each year more than 50 Australian families lose a loved one because of a house fire” Liz Wright said.
“In this financial year we have had 144 call outs so far, six of these have been house fires.”
“Last year there were 747 house fires in WA alone, and six deaths could have been prevented if the home had a working smoke alarm.”
FESA recommends that people buy photo electric smoke alarms that carry the Australian Standards symbol.
Craig Watts said that changing the batteries in your smoke alarm on a regular basis could potentially save your life. “The smoke detector is the only thing that is going to wake you up at night, if there is smoke in the house, so it’s a very cheap form of

Although more than 1,700kms south of Karratha, local McDonald’s branch have been able to raise almost $2,500 to help fund reopening the Wilson Park Primary School in Collie after it was burnt down in 2009. McDonalds manager Clayton McIntosh, wife Michelle, all the staff and the other seven regional McDonald’s outlets have raised together $20,000 from their ‘community fighting fund’. “Every year we put away money to donate somewhere that needs it most, like a town that has been hit by a major disaster,” McIntosh said.
“At the time, back in 2009, the Collie school had just burnt down and we all agreed it was a worthy cause to donate to, to help get the school up and running again for the children’s education.” “Both myself and my wife Michelle believe that we owe it to the community to give back after all the support we get each and every day,” McIntosh said. “This is the fourth year we have been doing this and it’s a real positive thing to do, makes you feel like you’ve helped brighten someones day.” Now after almost two years since the accident occurred The Wilson Park
Primary School opened their doors Friday April1. Collie McDonalds manager Vicki Cottrell received news of the devastation in August 2009 and instantly contacted her fellow regional licenses across WA to see what they could do. “The McDonald’s regional licensees have what we call a community fighting fund, which we set aside for times of need,” she said. “We were all touched by the loss of the school and what this would mean to the local community and children in particular – donating $20,000 to the school was our way of showing support.”
Third year for Mathletics This year marks the third year Mathletics has been running in 14 schools throughout the Pilbara, including seven Karratha primary schools with a number of 1933 students being involved. On Wednesday, March 30, Millars Well Primary School Deputy Principal Gareth Palmer said the school wanted to promote Mathletics so they decided to have an open day where people could come in and ask questions about the program. “We have had a program for three years and we acknowledge the fact that there are components of the program that we can actually use,” he said. “It helps with independent learning and students don't need a teacher over their shoulder all the time.” Learning for Life Worker at The Smith Family, Theresa Hillhouse said the previous years have been quite successful. “We focus mainly on primary school students so what we've been able to provide with funding, along with McConnell Dowell, is 1933 places for students over the Pilbara,” she said. “The beauty of the program is that it can be tailored to what the teacher perceives the student needs. “It can be tailored at a really high level or lower level depending on the student. “McConnell Dowell have funded the program and The Smith Family help coordinate the project through the schools.
• Crowded around to see the Mathletics program which 1933 students in the Pilbara are using “From statistics we can see that schools absolutely love the program, they find it a lot easier because it can be tailored and they can record how the student is progressing. “Teachers can also compare how their class is going to others schools.” McConnell Dowell Western Region Finance and Administration Charles D'Castro said that they believe in what The Smith Family represents. “We believe in them and that the numeracy and literacy is something that is really quite important for the kids and we believe in helping the community in every way we can,” he said. “It feels fantastic to see the kids enjoying the program and that the teachers enjoy delivering the maths program.” Palmer said that the program is open to any student between grade one
through to seven. “They probably do 2-3 hours a week in school and they also use it at home as part of their homework program,” he said. “It’s just so engaging and motivating for all the kids so we can't thank the sponsors enough. “There has been a very positive response and when they don't get their time to spend on the program they can get a bit itchy.” Millars Well Primary School year seven student Daaud Ali said he really enjoys playing online and competing against other schools. “It doesn't feel like work because I have fun whilst doing it, honestly I'd rather do this then sit in class,” he said. “I have learnt heaps since Mathletics has started in 2009 and whenever I have spare time or when I don't have homework I will go on the program.”

Online Canteen ‘simple to use’ Planning framework Perth-based business Our Online Canteen is making it easier for WA parents and schools to organise and encourage healthy eating in schools. The service enables busy parents to order their children’s lunches online up to 2 weeks in advance, freeing up valuable time and enabling them to ensure that their children are ordering a healthy lunch each day. The Our Online Canteen system has already been implemented into a number of schools across WA. St Paul’s Primary School Canteen Manager Sue Gray who is using the system loves it. “The Our Online Canteen system is so easy to use and helps us to save time,” she said. “Canteen helpers are at a minimum but this isn’t an issue because the work burden has been eased. “Since we implemented the system, there has been a massive increase in canteen orders and I believe this is because it is now so easy for
to guide Pilbara’s development
• Parent Fran McCombe said Our Online Canteen is fantastic parents. “The system really is beneficial for everybody and parents can monitor what their children are eating by referring to the traffic light system which is included on the site. “Parents can also have peace of mind knowing that the lunch orders are done,” says Ms Gray. Parent of three children at the school, Fran McCombe said
it is so simple and easy to use. “I don’t have to run around in the morning searching for pens, coins and lunch bags that have run out,” she said “And my kids like the same thing from the canteen so I can save their favorite order online and not have to re-do everytime.” More information on Our Online Canteen is available at www.ouronlinecanteen.com. au
Quick visit from a Minister While Shadow Education Minister Ben Wyatt was up recently he took the chance to visit some of the local schools. One of these schools included Tambrey Primary School and the Tambrey Early Learning Centre. Tambrey Early Learning Centre Director Stacey Johnston said that it is nice to have visitors around that are actually interested in what we do and what we have to offer. Mr Wyatt said that he has tried to visit as many schools as possible on such a short trip. “I like to just check up and see how every school is going,
just to keep an eye on things,” he said. “It is very important to keep up to date with what is going on with the schools in our country towns. “This Early Learning Centre has a fantastic set up, comparing it to my house where I have a one and two year old, it can get quite messy and unorganized so I believe my kids would absolutely love this.” The Tambrey Early Learning Centre sure has come a very long way since they first opened their doors to the public back in October last year.
“Very proud of how far we have come,” Mrs Johnston said. “We have staff from all over Australia and all have helped make this possible. “And we have been extremely busy since we first opened our doors in October last year, with just in the first week alone parents were coming in constantly with their children. “Also the parents of the children are very involved and sometimes bring their special skills in to help with the children including cooking.”
to urban development in some towns, the framework will guide government on infrastructure priorities across the Pilbara and give the private sector more confidence to invest in the region. “Strategies for economic growth, environmental issues, transport, infrastructure, water resources, tourism and the emerging impacts of climate change are also identified in the framework.” Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls said the framework linked into the State Government’s Pilbara Cities initiative which seeks to expand the region’s resident population and to rectify infrastructure inadequacies with the development of Karratha and Port Hedland into cities. “The framework sets the broad future planning direction for the Pilbara region and will help make the Pilbara a better place in which to live, work and invest,” Mr Grylls said. “More affordable housing, greater housing choice and access to higher standards of education, health, recreation and other community services will result in many fly-in flyout workers choosing to live in the Pilbara on a more permanent basis. “Importantly, the Pilbara’s natural and cultural heritage assets, such as Karijini and the Burrup Peninsula’s rock art will be conserved and celebrated under the framework.” A 60-day comment period is open on the draft framework and closes May 9, 2011. The final version is expected to be released later this year. The document can be downloaded from www. planning.wa.gov.au

A new planning framework to guide development in the Pilbara is set to continue the transformation of the region’s communities and boost its status as one of the nation’s key economic centres. Planning Minister John Day said the draft Pilbara Planning and Infrastructure Framework released recently provided a positive response to many of the opportunities and challenges facing the region. “The sustainability of the Pilbara region will be determined by the strengths of its communities; the liveability of its towns; appreciation of the region’s natural and cultural values; economic diversification and self sufficiency; and the level of services the region can attract,” Mr Day said. “The Pilbara region is important to both Western Australia and the nation. “It has great possibilities for major development and is on the threshold of another period of significant expansion. “This framework will help to ensure development and change over the next 25 years is achieved in a way that improves people’s lives and enhances its unique character and environment. “By 2035, we expect a resident population of about 140,000 from a more diverse economy that has capitalised on the region’s competitive advantages. “This framework will address the scale and distribution of future population growth, housing development and priority infrastructure needs for the next five years. “With infrastructure capacity a significant inhibitor

Putting the bun in fundraising Karratha Bakers Delight are forming alliances with bakers from across Western Australia to prepare 95,000 fresh hot cross buns on Saturday 9 April, to raise funds for the Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation. ‘Bundraiser’ Day will see local Bakers Delight bakeries donate $1 from every six pack of hot cross buns sold, in the hope of raising $22,000 to purchase essential heating equipment for Princess Margaret Hospital’s Neonatal Unit. The support given by Baker Delight on Bundraiser Day will enable the hospital to purchase a new Giraffe Warmer that provides a direct and efficient source of heat for temperature control of sick and small newborns in the hospital, just like baby Lleyton Hart. Lleyton was born 12 weeks premature and has had ongoing problems including severe infections and chronic lung disease. A bowel obstruction also required Lleyton to undergo surgery at just a few weeks old, however a warm and stable environment in the hospital has meant he has gradually improved and will be going home with his family in the next few months.

$20,000 cheque for KESC • Gemma, Shane and Carol from Karratha Bakers Delight Philip Aylward, Child and Adolescent Health Chief Executive at the hospital, said: “The warmers provide excellent assistance to nursing staff, allowing them to maintain and monitor the comfort and care levels of very sick infants and also enabling parents to stay close to their child. “The hard work of Princess Margaret Hospital staff and access to these kinds of services through the help of Bakers Delight, are vital in contributing to the recovery of very ill and premature babies.” David Tierney, Regional Manager Western Australia at Bakers Delight added:
“Easter is by far our busiest time of the year, so it’s a great opportunity to give back to Princess Margaret Hospital.” “We’re hoping to surpass our Bundraiser fundraising effort from last year and we’ll be busy baking to achieve that. “We encourage all our customers to make their hot cross bun purchase count on April 9.” For 31 years Bakers Delight bakers have been hand crafting hot cross buns with real care. This year the local Bakers Delight bakery at Karratha will be baking fresh each day traditional, fruitless, choc chip and mocha varieties.

Staff, students and parents at the Karratha Education Support Centre (KESC) were overwhelmed to receive a $20,000 cheque donated by Gap Ridge Village Health and Lifestyle Coordinators on Friday 18 March. The donation was a result of fundraising at Gap Ridge Village through December and January and generous donations by individuals and contractors. Gap Ridge Village Health and Lifestyle Coordinator Mathew Dawson and his team members Ashleigh Fletcher, Steven Hackett and Lia Williams, all employees of Jem Health and Sodexo, have been visiting the students at KESC every Friday since November 2010. The team volunteer their time to engage with and assist the students with sports and activities. Mathew Dawson said since the team have been visiting the school he has noticed a huge improvement in the students’ hand-eye coordination, fitness and social interactions. The Health and Lifestyle Coordinators have a strong passion for fundraising and helping out in the community and were delighted to organise the fundraiser to assist with the purchase a much needed sensory room for the KESC students. A sensory room is a specially resourced, low light room for children with learning difficulties which utilises specialised sensory equipment and activities. It enables students to be relaxed in order to maximise their learning potential. The money raised is double the original target of $10,000. Onsite village events such as quiz nights, bingo, raffles and personal donations raised the majority of the
money. Gap Ridge Village Residents were extremely generous in their contribution for the cause. KESC Principal Shiona Hobart said that both the money and time the team spend with the children has meant so much to the students and teachers alike. “They have built really great friendships with the team of four volunteers and the fundraising venture has been incredible,” Hobart said. “When Mathew told us the total we were absolutely astounded! “The amazing total now means instead of having a makeshift sensory tent, and spending the money on buying a few resources, we can think about developing a dedicated room, which will be fitted out properly that will remain in the school for many years to come. “At no stage did we ever think we could afford that luxury!” As a thank you for the donation, the students each drew a picture of themselves, forming a giant poster, which is now hanging in the Gap Ridge Village Dining Room. Gap Ridge Village Health and Lifestyle coordinators and KESC would like to personally thank all the residents who so kindly donated, Sodexo who gratefully donated $3,000 plus three 20” televisions as prizes, UGL who donated their safety award prize of money of $2,500, Jem Health who donated $1,000, Monadelphous who donated $1,000, the Roebourne Art Group who kindly donated two amazing pieces of indigenous art that were raffled and raised well over $2,000 and Signs West for supplying the novelty cheque.

South Hedland Primary celebrates Harmony Day with art By Elise Batchelor
• Mrs Cherie Pearse and Jordan with his Harmony Day neclace
Earn cash for your family or club
Harmony Day is a national celebration of our cultural diversity and South Hedland Primary School recently marked the day with its own events. Every class partook in a range of rotating activities during the morning and each activity was in some way a reflection on the meaning of ‘harmony’. Some groups made flags while others made ‘people’ paper chains. There was song singing and, because of the many united
colours in a hundreds and thousands packet, junior children also enjoyed making fairy bread. Pre Primary teacher, Mrs Cherie Pearse, had classes constructing macaroni necklaces dyed orange, the symbolic colour of Harmony Day. Mr David Howell, also of Pre Primary, read The Gossipy Parrot by Shen Roddy. It told the tale of Godfrey, a cheeky parrot who had to be taught a lesson by his buddies in the jungle about the unfriendly nature of his gossiping.
In response, Mr Howell’s groups painted their interpretation of being a true friend. He commented that such a day is a vital reinforcer of “promoting friendship, tolerance and respect for each other and our cultures.” Kindy student Doyle Bero, having painted his brightly coloured artwork, said that real friendship is, “When you help people” and, “When you be good to each other”. “Our school population comprises approximately
90% Indigenous Australians, with the remaining 10% made up of Muslim, Tongan and Australian students,” Mrs Pearse said. “In its simplest form, Harmony Day is about accepting each other and not seeing differences.” The celebrations were concluded with a presentation of ‘Harmony Day’ awards by Deputy Principal, Mr Brian Abbey. One student from each class received the award for being a caring individual and a true representative of the meaning of the day.

Well over 200 children and parents celebrated Playgroup Week at ‘Hedland’s Biggest Playday’ on the March 24.
Held at the Andrew McLaughlin Community Centre in Cooke Point, the morning was a wonderful chance for young children of Port and South Hedland to play together and delight in an array of activities. Three playgroups, including Hedland Playgroup, Cooke Point Playgroup and Hedland Baptist Church Playgroup, joined forces to provide craft activities. There was no shortage of chatter as children glued rainbow coloured collages, constructed musical rice shakers and daubed crowns with paint and glitter to become princes and princesses for the day. Hedland Toy Library had a bouncy castle in full swing and there were face painting and play equipment for other entertainment. The Mayor’s representative, Councillor David Hooper, cut an emerald green celebratory cake made by Emily Rocavert. He commented that such a morning is a great thing for Hedland. “Playgroups offer a safe place where children can experiment, enter into society and enjoy new discoveries,” he said. “Having larger mornings like the Biggest Playday are a continuation of this, where, Children can develop individuality and grow in character.” Councillor Hooper also cited play as a major factor for children learning to manage anxiety. With kids streaming in and out of the centre all morning, the

Jodie Melvin, mum to Lucy and Katie, said the day was very well organised, including the morning tea and activities. Kellie Shepherd, new to the area, brought along Jack and Connor and remarked that joining playgroup has provided a safe environment in which her children can play,. “And it’s been a great way for us to meet new friends,” she said. Coordinator Kimberley Smith was most grateful for the support of the playgroups and sponsors of the day. This included Sonia O’Reilly, who opens her new children’s store B Tween Tides in South Hedland shortly and also held a fashion parade of mini starlets. However things then changed when Chynoweth had children as she could not paint when she wanted and for however long she wanted. “Jack is now 9, and Sophie is 5 – I had children escaping into my studio and tipping dye jars on their heads,” she said. “I have continued to paint, but have had to scale down production significantly. “But I cannot say no to an order, so the midnight oil does get burnt occasionally in our house.” In the future Chynoweth said she would like to experiment and paint on canvas. “I have always been interested in it, it's always in the back of my mind, mixed media pieces on large canvases, paint overlaid with sheer textiles,” she said. Dirty syringe found A fun day at soccer turned out to be a day of horror for local mother of three Taryn Gentry when her three year old son stumbled across a dirty syringe at the Tambrey Oval car park on Friday, March 25.
to do with it so I told the manager of the soccer club and he disposed of it.”
Mrs Gentry said her son Austin picked up the syringe not knowing what it was.
“By telling this story it makes parents and the general public more aware and if it opens the discussion around Karratha or even gets through to the people responsible then the story is worth telling,” Mrs Gentry said.
“He was confused to what it was, he picked it up ready to give to me,” she said. “As soon as I saw it I told him to drop it, I was so worried that he had pricked himself. “He must have been so confused, I was constantly asking him if he had pricked himself or his brother.
“I have often thought when commenting about the ‘thought’ of one day finding a syringe, it would make me so angry but when my son actually picked one up, the feeling I had inside and the
thoughts that ran through my mind were filled with so much disgust for these inconsiderate people. “Our innocent kids are being put at risk” This may not be a constant thing that happens in Karratha but it is enough to do something about it. “Maybe the council should place sharp containers around the hotspots in Karratha and also make the public informed of what to do if something like this is found, as I had no idea what to do and I’m sure a lot of other people don’t know either,” Mrs Gentry said.
A total of 25 nurses at Nickol Bay Hospital staff have advanced their skills in providing life support, care and treatment in emergency situations, by undertaking accredited courses funded under the $38.2 million Pilbara Health Initiative. The Pilbara Health Initiative is a partnership between the State Government’s Royalties for Regions program and the Chamber of Minerals and Energy of WA’s (CME) Pilbara Industry’s Community Council (PICC) Health Initiative members (BHP Billiton Iron Ore, Chevron Australia Pty Ltd, North West Shelf Joint Venture, Rio Tinto and Woodside Energy), which aims to boost health services in the region. WA Country Health Service Regional Director Tina Chinery said the course plays valuable role in up-skilling health staff and giving them the confidence to deal with emergency situations. “Health care in rural and remote regions can pose particular challenges, with issues such as geographical isolation alone sometimes making emergency care situations vastly different to what is experienced in a metropolitan setting,” she said. “It is important that our clinical staff develop the knowledge and skills necessary to provide emergency care and treatment and have the confidence to deliver safe, quality care to the patient.
“Advanced Life Support Program ensures our health care workers have the highest training in lifesaving resuscitation techniques.” Operations Manager of the West Pilbara Pattie Hudson said West Pilbara Health Service are committed to the ongoing education and training of their staff. “We do this to ensure we deliver the best quality health care to our communities,” she said. “Training and education is also important for ongoing recruitment and retention of professional doctors, nurses and allied health professionals. “We aim to become an employer of choice which means people want to come and work at our wonderful health facilities.” Nickol Bay Hospital emergency nurses Daneele Dunham and Kellie Schajermann said that living in Karratha they are limited to courses. “Crana Plus and West Pilbara Health Service have given us this great opportunity to learn advanced life support,” Dunham said. “Normally we would have to fly to Perth or elsewhere to complete courses.” “We never want to be in this situation where someone is so close to death but it great to prepare us just in case something like this happens,” Schajermann said. Port Hedland plant of the week VINKA By Hedland Down To Earth
H
Known variously as vinca, periwinkle, and Madagascar periwinkle, summer-flowering vinca is catharanthus. It is easily confused with vinca minor and vinca major. All of them are members of the dogbane family. Native to Madagascar, vinca acts as an annual in most regions of North America. It blooms beautifully from the first warm days of late Spring to the first frost in Autumn. In the southern climates, it is at home enough to naturalize in many areas and provides so much garden colour with little care. Catharanthus prefers sunny, hot situations and blooms all Summer. All vinca flowers are simple: they are single, never double. Most modern varieties have overlapping petals and with extensive breeding, the colour range of vinca now includes pink, deep rose, red, scarlet with the newest being 'Jaio Scarlet Eye, white with red eye, lavender blue with white eye, peach, apricot, orchid, raspberry, burgundy, and many other shades'. For amazing medicinal facts on vincas: gardeners and herbalists cultivated vincas for centuries in Europe, India, China, and America to treat all kinds of diseases, from coughs
and sore throats to eye and lung infections. Most interesting was the treatment for diabetes. In the 20th century, researchers discovered the plant contains dozens of alkaloids, some of them lower blood sugar levels and blood pressure, in the 1950's, they discovered two alkaloids that are the source of anticancer drugs. Use vincas to edge a border of annual or perennial flowers, to weave colour through a bed, or in container gardens. When not in bloom the plants offer a neat, green edge around the perimeter of a garden or along a walk or driveway. Planted as a ground cover, they fill in empty spaces within a border. Vinca usually grows 8 to 18 inches tall with a 1-foot spread, although there are trailing types that spread to 2 feet. Being drought tolerant, vincas do particularly well in containers. Add practically no maintenance to these drought tolerant plants and you have a winning flowering plant perfect for added colour to our Hedland gardens. Hedland down to earth will have our growing stock ready for you in three weeks and remember we are your one stop garden shop, now with outdoor furniture, fountains, wrought iron... the list goes on. Come have a look any day from 9am to 5pm.
The Pilbara Development Commission will be holding the first Pilbara Dialogue for 2011 on Monday 4 April in Port Hedland. The Dialogue events are generally well attended as people value the opportunity to hear the latest information on a range of topics of relevance in the region. Prior to the Dialogue convening, the Hon Wendy Duncan MLC, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Regional Development; will address the group and launch the new resource ‘Pilbara – a Region in Profile’. This Dialogue will have a presentation from the Commission’s CEO Stephen Webster providing a snapshot of the work occurring and planned for the year. “2011 is shaping up to be as busy, even busier, then the last
few years,” Mr Webster said. “The Liberal National government’s focus on the region and the Royalties for Regions program especially Pilbara Cities, has created unprecedented opportunities for the Pilbara and it is important that we capitalise on this. “It is an extraordinary and exciting time.” The Dialogue will provide updates from the General Manager of Pilbara Cities Mr Chris Adams, Mr Damian Callachor Director of Chamber of Minerals and Energy, Landcorp Regional Manager Mr Mike Moloney. Mr Fred Chaney OA Chairman of Desert Knowledge Australia and Dr Bruce Walker, Director DKA, will provide an overview of the work they are undertaking in regard to regional governance, using
the Pilbara as a model. Manager of Census 2011, Mr Mike Scott from the Australian Bureau of Statistic will discuss the upcoming Census and the work occurring to capture the Pilbara on Census night. For the first time the Dialogue will finish with a Q and A style panel involving all presenters and the audience. “This will enable everyone to question and discuss the day’s presentations, focussing on the value of statistics to regional development and governance, which will produce some interesting discussion,” Mr Webster said. Following the Dialogue the Pilbara Development Commission is hosting a networking event providing all participants with the opportunity to meet Board members and discuss the day’s activities.
Businesses and industry can support the community The Town of Port Hedland is inviting businesses and industry to become sponsors of the 2011 rates Incentive Program, a successful community initiative. The Rates Incentive Program was created to encourage ratepayers to pay their rates in full by the due date and since its inception, has seen an annual increase in the numbers of rates paid on time. There are four levels of sponsorship packages available – bronze ($100); silver ($500); gold ($1000); and platinum ($2000). Sponsorship contribution can be in the form of cash or
other prizes. “The Rates Incentive Program is a fantastic opportunity for businesses and industry to be seen supporting a community program whilst also supporting Council” said Mayor Kelly Howlett.” “Having rates paid on time means Council can allocate the necessary funds to a variety of projects which result in the development of our town into a Pilbara City.” All sponsors receive recognition and publicity through advertising, media coverage and signage including flyers sent to
about 5,500 rate payers in Port and South Hedland. Their logos will also be featured on posters at the Rates Incentive Event and on the Town’s website. To become a sponsor, simply call Senior Rates Officer Carmen Hanisch at the Town of Port Hedland on 9158 9300 for more information. Applications for sponsorship close on Thursday 21 April and must be submitted to Senior Rates Officer, Town of Port Hedland, PO Box 41, Port Hedland, WA, 6721 or emailed to council@ porthedland.wa.gov.au.
Registrations taken for Hedland’s biggest community expo The Town of Port Hedland are now taking stall holder and performance registrations for the 2011 Welcome to Hedland Night, which will be held on Friday 13 May at the Hedland Senior High School oval. As one of the town’s biggest community expos, Welcome to Hedland Night will showcase the various businesses, industries and organistaions Hedland has to offer, as well as food stalls and entertainment all night. With approximately 4000 community members
attending, and 68 stall holders and 10 performers in 2010, this year’s Welcome to Hedland Night is guaranteed to be bigger and better. “Local businesses and organisations are encouraged to have a stall at Welcome to Hedland Night – this is a great community event and is a fantastic opportunity to reach out to new residents and let them know what your business or organisation has to offer,” said Mayor Kelly Howlett. Pilbara Wildlife Carers Association
Northern spiny-tailed gecko By Jenny Fox
• Northern spiney-tailed gecko
This is a very common little gecko in the Pilbara and is one of only 10 species known to ‘tailsquirt’. When this lizard is threatened or handled it can squirt one or more droplets of sticky musky smelling fluid from tail glands with amazing accuracy to the distance of 30cm. If the tail cannot be lifted to squirt, it uses
it to smear the sticky substance onto the captor. The substance resembles the consistency of a spider web. One could imagine a large lizard, scorpion or large spider becoming entangled in the substance. There is much variation in colour and scales with these geckos and their tail is long and slender with two distinctive rows of enlarged spines
(clearly seen in the photo courtesy of Colin Roe). The spines become smaller along the back towards the head. The eyes have two to four elegant spines as eyebrows and overall it is a very pretty lizard. The spiny-tail is considered an arboreal lizard, but in absence of trees it can be found in bushes, stumps or spinafex hummocks. In warm weather it
will perch by day sunning itself in the afternoons. It forages at night, both in the trees and on the ground where it feeds on small insects. It is one of the most frequently seen geckos on roads. They are quite large, 15cm in total length and males and females mature in their third year. The female lays two soft shelled eggs from September to March.

When it comes to man’s best four legged friend, some people will do almost anything for them including SAFE carer Kerryn Gardner and partner Brett Burkett. Kerryn and Brett have been fostering pets from SAFE for a few years now and were asked to provide foster care for Milo, a mixed breed canine, in February 2010 after he was found wandering around the Back Beach, and it was discovered he was in need of rehoming. A year had passed and Milo was still in the care of Kerryn and Brett, making it harder for Kerryn to give him up once SAFE would find the right home. “He is such a gorgeous dog and I knew if I kept him any longer there was no way that I was going to be able to give him up, I asked for him to go to another carer so Sally and Dave McLaren took him on about 6 weeks ago” Kerryn said. Eventually Kerryn received the call from SAFE with the news that they had found a loving home for Milo in Newman, the Barr family, who had already adopted a SAFE dog before. Kerryn drove Milo to the airport where he then flew to Perth and then onto Newman the same day. Late in the evening Kerryn received a call from a distraught Sharen, Milo’s new owner, to say
that Milo had escaped from his cage as soon as it was opened at the airport and they’d been searching for him for over three hours. Kerryn immediately thought of the worst possibilities of what could happen to a frightened dog in a remote area so far from home. After being calmed down by Brett they set off into the night and drove to Newman taking positive action to try find him. Many miles and a sleepless night later they arrived in Newman around 4.30am. They started their search immediately around the airport, whistling and calling out his name before deciding to have a rest. New owner Sharen was camping not far away, cooking sausages in the hope Milo would be attracted by the smell. After 45 minutes of rest Kerryn felt the car move, thinking it was Brett moving in his sleep but she realised he wasn’t. Thinking she had imagined it, Kerryn went back to sleep only to be woken up again by the movement and the jingle of a collar. “It was the best thing I had ever seen, there was Milo!” Kerryn said. “I have never been so happy to see anybody in my whole entire life.
• Sharen, Danny, Sachin (Holding Ace), Ricky, Kerryn and Brett (holding MIlo) “It was amazing, we think that Milo must have been about a 45 minute run away and either heard our noisy ute or heard us whistling and started running towards us. “Then once he got to the car park he probably heard Brett’s snoring” she joked. After calling Sharen, Milo was finally introduced to his new family including their other dog Ace. Kerryn and Brett spent time with Milo and his new family to help settle him in and as hard as it was for Kerryn to give Milo up, she knew the Barr family were perfect for him and would give him a loving home. Sue Hedley, founder and owner of SAFE said “SAFE has saved thousands of animals thanks to the
dedication of foster carers who do an amazing job providing wonderful care for animals while a permanent home is found, but I have never experienced the extremes of the commitment that Kerryn and Brett showed the night they received the news of Milo’s escape.” “The outcome could have been so different! “I am so grateful for the action they took so selflessly and also that the new owners stayed where he ran off. “No wonder our foster program is so successful when we have so many good carers and so many excellent new owners.“ If you are interested in becoming a SAFE carer, please call SAFE on (08) 9185 4634.

For more information, email kna.nwc@gmail.com FOUNDATIONS COACHING COURSE Karratha Netball Association would like to encourage all non accredited coaches to attend this Netball WA accredited course being held on Sunday, 10th April from 9am – 4pm at the Karratha Entertainment Centre. It is being presented by Tracey Swami who is the Regional Development Officer for the North West Netball Region (NWNR), is an advanced coach and ex-West Coast Fever player. It is an invaluable course and includes a book and CD which is ideal to use when planning your training sessions. Every sub-junior and junior coach who hasn’t completed this course should attend. To attend this course you need to be a financial member of KNA (ie. pay either player or official fees on 2nd May) If you would like to attend please email Alicia, Association Development Officer on jballent@bigpond.net.au by Monday, 4th April 2011. If we don’t get minimum numbers the course will have to be cancelled. This is a fantastic course and very worthwhile so please come along. It is also the only netball specific coaching course being held in Karratha this year.

Netball season is well and truly now upon us! The Karratha Netball Association (KNA) received 29 senior nominations, six 17 and Under, seven 15 and Under, seven Sub Junior One and five Sub Junior Two. Senior nominations have closed however late sub junior and junior nominations will be accepted until Sunday, April 3rd. Please contact Toni at kna.competition@gmail. com if you have a late nomination or require more information. Tracey Williamson and Cindy Newhouse presented a Level One Umpiring Course to more than 90 KNA members last Saturday. This course was made compulsory for two members from every team in 2011. This is a new initiative by KNA to encourage better umpiring across the divisions. This course is a prerequisite to obtaining a National C Umpiring badge so hopefully some attendees will further their umpiring skills by joining the Green Shirt program or doing further courses. This year the Northwest Netball Championships are being held right here in Karratha taking place over the weekend of June 18 and 19. If you are interested in competing in the North West Championships, trials for seniors will be held Monday April 4 and 11 at 7pm at the Bulgarra Netball Courts. Trials for juniors will be held from 5.45pm to 7pm on Tuesday, April 5th and from 5-6.30pm on April 9. The second trial on the 9th will be in conjunction with a player development workshop with ex West Coast Fever player Tracey Swami. Expressions of interest are required from individuals who are able to volunteer, coach or take on the role as team managers for both senior and junior teams. If you are eager to volunteer, can help out or for further information, please email Jess at

BMX Club welcomes new members By Nick Muller
Last Sunday the Karratha BMX Club threw open the gates and invited members of the public to come along and try BMX. The “come and try day” is part of a national campaign promoted by BMX Australia to encourage new riders in to BMX. All new riders who came along on Sunday received a show bag full of goodies including a hat, pen and wristband. Approximately 50 new riders came along on Sunday afternoon to give BMX a try and experience riding on the track. Riders took part in various skills sessions to practice their bike control before taking to the BMX track for a few laps. After warming up with some stretches BMX Club coaches split the riders in to groups to put them through their paces. Riders put their balance to the test by weaving in and out of witches hats, learnt how to control their bike coming down
the start ramp and practiced their pumping on the pump track. After several laps around the track and a few spills most new riders were ready to head home, before the day finished up riders from the BMX Club took to the track to show off their skills and demonstrate how to ride the track. The race season at the Karratha BMX Club started on Friday night with the first points night for the season. Racing is held every Friday night during the school term; registrations open at 6.00pm and racing gets underway at 7.00 pm. The Club canteen is open on race nights and offers a selection of food so that you can come down watch BMX and not have to worry about cooking. The BMX Club takes new registrations throughout the year and welcomes people to come down and see what BMX is all about.

Flying Foams ready to take on the Challenge The 2011 Gibb River Road Mountain Bike Challenge is almost on us - six days of mountain bike madness from May 8. The Challenge is a charity ride crossing the Kimberley, from Derby to Kununurra along the 700km corrugated, dusty, bumpy, muddy, creek crossed and very hilly Gibb River Road to raise money for charity. This year the Dampier Flying Foams, six nutty Pilbara cyclists aiming to raise big dollars for two charities – The Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) and WA Police Legacy. One of the team members Rob Stewart explained the reason behind the name of the group saying the Flying Foam is a significant navigation passage in the local waters off Dampier. “We also like to blow a little foam off an amber ale or two after a hard day in the saddle,” he said. “Most of our team are from the Pilbara and all involved in the local community – Water Police, Customs, Immigration, Fire and Emergency Services plus sea rescue volunteers make up the Flying Foams team.” It is not the first time this
brave team have accomplished the challenge, with just last year donating just under $22,000 to the RFDS and WA Police Legacy. “The ride was bloody hard and the fundraising was relentless, but we also had a lot of fun,” he said. “And when you see the RFDS evacuating seriously ill and injured people from the Pilbara with some regularity it makes you feel good that you’ve helped make funding the RFDS possible. “At the moment we’re chasing sponsors. “Flying Foams are covering all our own costs to participate so any and all money donated is split 50/50 between the two charities – RFDS and WA Police Legacy. “We have official receipt books from both organisations and will write receipts on the spot so you can claim a tax deduction for any donation over $2. “You’ll feel good, big donors can have their logo prominently displayed on our shirts and we will push their names hard for supporting our charities.” To make a donation you may call Rob Stewart on 0439 986 006 or Luke Carter on 0405 616 644.
