Minister must address scathing report into Roebourne Prison An Inspector of Custodial Services Report into Roebourne Regional Prison painted a dark and depressing picture of Western Australia’s only North West penal facility, Shadow Corrective Services Minister Fran Logan said on Wednesday, April 6. Mr Logan said the report, tabled in Parliament on Tuesday, April 5, revealed most prisoners were still housed in inhumane conditions that put their health at risk. “The findings in this report can only be interpreted as a condemnation of the way the facility has been run,” he said.

“The report concluded the prison could only reach its potential if there was ‘expansion, investment, upgrading, a clearer sense of direction and a more cohesive team spirit’. “Corrective Services Minister Terry Redman needs to act decisively and quickly to address the appalling conditions highlighted in the report and one of those decisions must be a demand for managerial change.” Some of Inspector of Custodial Services Neil Morgan’s findings included:

No air conditioning for prisoners in a place where temperatures sometimes reach more than 50 degrees Celsius; Rats running around cells at night; A lack of basic facility maintenance; Low morale due to poor relationships between management and staff; Failure to maintain key personnel such as prison support officers and women’s support officers; and no Aboriginal Visitor Scheme for a prison that has a 95 per cent Indigenous population. Mr Logan said Mr Redman must urgently address the shocking litany of managerial incompetence.

“This report effectively writes the prison off and I call on the Minister to tell the public if and when he will replace this Dickensian institution,” he said. “It is clear this prison is beyond its use by date. “It needs replacing and the Minister must come clean on its future.

Roebourne Shire Council is just days away from making an announcement about the Karratha Leisure Complex. It is currently in negotiations with its preferred contractor to build a multi-million dollar leisure complex on Dampier Highway and will consider appointing the successful tenderer on April 18. With construction scheduled to start as early as November, the Karratha Leisure Complex is set to become the Pilbara’s premier indoor sport and aquatic centre. The master plan boasts topclass facilities including a resortstyle aquatic precinct complete with children’s splash playground and three swimming pools, multipurpose sports venues including playing fields and clubhouse as well as various indoor and outdoor courts and squash courts. Located on a shared site with Pilbara TAFE and Karratha Senior High School, the complex will also feature a fully-equipped fitness centre with crèche, an indoor children’s playground, cafes, function and meeting rooms and letable office space. During an emergency, such as a tropical cyclone, it will also double as a welfare and evacuation centre and provide much- needed refuge to potentially hundreds of local residents. Roebourne Shire Council President Nicole Lockwood said the Karratha Leisure Complex was the “first of its kind” in the Pilbara. She said it signalled a significant step forward in Karratha’s transformation from mining town to major Australian city. “Development of the Karratha Leisure Complex is a major boon not only for residents living in the Shire of Roebourne but the entire region, ”Councillor Lockwood said. “By 2013 I would expect the Karratha Leisure Complex will be playing host to regional sporting championships, attracting visitors

OK. I’m going to be brave and stick my hand up in proud embarrassment for having been totally convinced by the April Fool’s joke that Hugh Jackman was coming to Hearson’s Cove near Dampier and Karratha to film a Lipton’s Iced Tea ad.

Up in Port Hedland on that morning I was forlorn, to say the least. I might well have even done a bit of hormonal shopping to cope. But then again, at least I didn’t actually go to Hearson’s Cove…

Hugh and Cry • Hamish Munro being ‘Brave and Shave’.

Shave it oﬀ Hamish! Some kids at the age of 14 would be spending their money on the newest Xbox 360 games, but not Hamish Munro. Hamish decided to shave and colour his hair like many other for the World’s Greatest Shave held at Centro Karratha Shopping Centre on March 12. “I coloured my hair back in 2007 but this time I decided to go all the way and shave it all off,” he said. “I wanted to do it because my Grandfather died of cancer before I was even born. “At first I wasn’t scared of the shave but once I got there I was really nervous. “But the good thing is in the morning I don’t have to do my hair, I just have to wake up and go.” His goal was to raise $500 but managed to raise a huge $650, but next year Hamish is aiming for the $1000 mark. “I was so ecited when I found out I went over my goal, I didn’t even think I would get there,” he said. “The Karratha Golf Club donated a lot of money and so did my friends and teachers from school.” Hamish is set to grow his hair for next year ready to shave it all off once again hoping to raise even more money then this year.

Not lying, I’m crying, upon the floor I’m dying and thinking, stop blinking, mascara splodges inking my face which is blotchy and dribbly, blubbery, splotchy. I’m sitting with icecream, a bucket, topped with whipped cream.

To Hearson’s he travelled, his secrets to unravel of dancing, so sexy, with looks which do perplex me. And right now, he’s sipping his Lipton’s tea and dripping, no doubt with his shirt off… Oh I am such a nuff nuff.

My spoon I am slurping, the wine’s made me start burping, the Tim Tams are crumbs now with me slumped in my pow wow, crosslegged and moaning, ‘Oh woe is me,’ I’m groaning. The morning, a heartbreak, I’ve made a dreadful mistake.

I’m foolish, schoolgirlish, and somewhat maybe churlish. Oh bottom! It’s not fair! OH WHY AM I NOW NOT THERE?! So here now in Hedland, my head and heart in bedlam, I’ll sit here without cheer for hours with a sore rear.

I listened, I shivered, my bottom lip it quivered. I blushed in the hush and tried simply to be offhand: ‘Indeed yes, how crazy! Who’d be sucked in so hazy? Hugh Jackman, oh haha, come up to see Karratha.’

Why did not I jump on that bus and get a move on from Hedland southwest where Karratha had its coup there? Hugh Jackman, oh heck, man, he’s there today, so why am I sitting here dribbly, my guts all wobbly wibbly?

The phone rings, it bring brings at midday and this voice sings: ‘How funny! How stupid? Can you believe they took it?! To think that they bought how Hugh Jackman would be here now and dancing and singing down on the beach, hearts ringing.”

And quickly, quite sickly, I said goodbye all prickly. And looked all around me; my purchases astound me. In woe I’d gone shopping, the credit card hot hopping. And that makes me coolish – FIRST PRIZE Ms April Foolish!

There’s only been one time that I can remember where I rejected food. Or rather it rejected me. I was on a flight from Italy to the UK and I was three months pregnant. I had survived so far on cheese and tomato crackers with a side serving of chocolate croissants (sorry baby if you have a chocolate addiction one day) as anything else made me feel sick even to look at. Especially chicken. The flight attendants started serving lunch and I had the overwhelming urge to launch myself out of the emergency exit.

You guessed it. Chicken sandwiches. Apart from that rather unfortunate

incident which I won’t go into details in case you are reading this over your breakfast, food and I have had a long lasting relationship. I am Polish and we love food. We live for it.

Now everything has changed. I have a toddler and a black pudding sandwich (not recommended for those with queasy stomachs) for breakfast is now not okay. Because he wants everything I have.

In times of happiness we eat (and drink vodka). In times of crisis, we eat even more.

Having a big piece of cheesecake at Jamaica Blue with a coffee is also no longer.

And if you come to my house, I make sure you eat too.

All the other kids are occupying themselves with colouring books or running around driving their mums crazy.

I’m quite sure it’s the reason I have so many friends. If it wasn’t for my husband telling me it’s not normal I would think it completely fine that I wake up in the morning and my first thought is ‘what should I make for dinner tonight?’ And I definitely think it’s fine to have salami (which I get sent from a Perth Polish butcher), cheese and boiled egg on rye bread for breakfast.

Mine is intently staring and drooling at the said piece of cake. I now have a healthy vegetable muffin. Boring. But much more responsible. And I don’t want my health nurse looking at me with accusing eyes if she walks past. So now our dinners have gone from

quite unhealthy Eastern European cuisine (think lots of stewed meat, schnitzels, potatoes, no salad, potatoes, gherkin and did I mention potato?) to lean fish, vegetables and a healthy banana bread slice for dessert. But every night something great happens. Husband bathes toddler. They are far from the kitchen for at least half an hour. And sometimes, just sometimes, the Polish in me comes out, responsible mother disappears and you may find me scoffing a Polish doughnut from the freezer. Disclaimer: The only reason The Biggest Loser is not calling me yet is because I advocate doing exercise daily. Also, believe it or not I am yet to meet a fat Polish person so maybe we are on to a good thing. My doctor may disagree.

Wharﬁes raise $2600 for work mate Everyone has a story where cancer has affected them personally or someone close to them, it’s something people try to not think about but at one stage you have to just hope that when you do deal with it you have the same friends and family support as Michael ‘Fingers’ Kilmurray. Fingers had lived in Karratha for almost 17 years but sadly had to move away from the town he loved to be closer to the hospital where he would soon to spend much of his time. One of his three daughters, Kirsty Kilmurray said he was diagnosed with bowel cancer back in December 2009 and only a month ago was diagnosed with lung cancer. However, at the moment for his last ‘big bang’ holiday he is visiting Amsterdam and the England region with his wife and her mother. Co-worker at Patrick Stevedoring on the DPA wharf, Marlee Smith said she knew he was having a hard time especially when he had to move away last September and she decided she wanted to do her little bit to help him. “It all started when I got my new Apple Mac laptop and I was testing out making videos and slide shows,” she said. “I thought with all the images I

have of us wharfies, I might as well do something good with it and raise money for a mate and co-worker. “So I put together a video clip dedicated to raise money for Fingers. “He was overwelmed when I went down and saw him last December and gave him the $1800 that we had raised from the DVD sales and donations. “He had no idea that we had organised this, it just affected us enough to actually want to do something for him. “At the moment we have raised another $800 so that brings our total up to $2600 so far.” Another co-worker at Patricks, Johnny Quintal said even people outside our small workforce have shown an interest into it. “Some people haven’t even met Mick but still want to do what they can to help,” he said. “For example, road transport owner/driver, Dave Lord has been instrumental by spreading the word and selling the DVD’s.” Michael Kilmurray said he was surprised and grateful when Marlee arrived at his new place in Perth to help support him through his journey. “I didn’t realise people actually cared about what was going on even

Karratha swimming pool up and running Karratha Aquatic Centre (KAC) reopened on Saturday, April 2 thanks to a mammoth effort by staff at the Shire of Roebourne. The KAC suffered significant damage when a tornado struck Karratha late last month, blowing over shade structures, destroying the centre office and depositing large amounts of debris in the three pools. Roebourne Shire Council President Nicole Lockwood said a great deal of hard work had taken place at the KAC to clear debris, undertake repairs and drain and then refill the pools. “Because there was so much debris blown into the pools, we were forced to empty them and once refilled, the water had to be tested,” Councillor Lockwood said. “The latest samples taken from all three pools have

passed stringent water quality tests and it was deemed safe for the KAC to reopen this weekend. “This is fantastic news for locals and I’d like to thank everyone for their patience while this important community facility was closed for repair.” Parent Zoe Roosendaal said it is excellent that the pool is finally open again. “It makes it a lot easier and it is so much more relaxed here instead of being locked up in home all day,” she said. “The kids are really enjoying themselves because it’s just too hot to do anything else outside during the day.” Mrs Roosendaal was there with her two children and one of their friends.

Her daughter Jamie said she likes how the pool cools you down on hot days. “It feels like a pillow that you can float on, it’s so much fun,” she said. Please be aware there are currently no lights or shade structures over the pools and the children’s playground will be off-limits until further notice. Contractors will remain on site finalising outstanding repairs over the coming weeks. Patrons are asked to observe public safety signs and keep well clear of fenced work areas. KAC staff will contact those involved in community programs, including Learn to Swim classes, with information on how to “roll over” swimming lessons to next term.

Karratha ﬂood appeal raises $40,000 During the Shire President’s Flood Appeal, flood-affected residents in Carnarvon and Ipswich will benefit from more than $40,000 raised. Roebourne Shire Council President Nicole Lockwood said Council met recently to determine how funds donated should be distributed. “Council determined that 75 per cent, or approximately $30,000, of the funds raised during the appeal should go to Carnarvon,” he said. “This decision takes into account the fact that a number of larger donations made to the appeal stipulated Carnarvon should be the beneficiary. “With so many natural disasters affecting our nation and the world in recent times it is important that we do not forget those still doing it tough in Carnarvon. “Their plight has been particularly difficult and we hope this money will help get struggling residents back on their feet.” Lockwood said the other 25 per cent of funds raised, which totalled approximately $10,000, would be

donated to Ipswich City Council Mayor Paul Pisasale, who had his own flood appeal underway. “The Shire of Roebourne has developed a strong connection with Paul and Ipswich over the past three years,” she said. “Before the floods, the city had undergone a complete transformation, similar to the one now underway in Karratha, as we look to become a major Australian city of more than 50,000 people. “Ipswich City Council has provided strong support to us and this is one way we can say thank you for that support.” Lockwood thanked the following organisations for their support during the Shire President’s Flood Appeal: Westpac Banking Corporation, Pilbara News, Centro Karratha, Karratha and Districts Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Hampton Harbour Boat and Sailing Club, Wickham OB Social Club and Communities Against Rubbishing our Environment

A new planning framework to guide development in the Pilbara is set to continue the transformation of the region’s communities and boost its status as one of the nation’s key economic centres. Planning Minister John Day said the draft Pilbara Planning and Infrastructure Framework released recently provided a positive response to many of the opportunities and challenges facing the region. “The sustainability of the Pilbara region will be determined by the strengths of its communities; the liveability of its towns; appreciation of the region’s natural and cultural values; economic diversification and self sufficiency; and the level of services the region can attract,” Mr Day said. “The Pilbara region is important to both Western Australia and the nation. “It has great possibilities for major development and is on the threshold of another period of significant expansion. “This framework will help to ensure development and change over the next 25 years is achieved in a way that improves people’s lives and enhances its unique character and environment. “By 2035, we expect a

resident population of about 140,000 from a more diverse economy that has capitalised on the region’s competitive advantages. “This framework will address the scale and distribution of future population growth, housing development and priority infrastructure needs for the next five years. “With infrastructure capacity a significant inhibitor to urban development in some towns, the framework will guide government on infrastructure priorities across the Pilbara and give the private sector more confidence to invest in the region. “Strategies for economic growth, environmental issues, transport, infrastructure, water resources, tourism and the emerging impacts of climate change are also identified in the framework.” Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls said the framework linked into the State Government’s Pilbara Cities initiative which seeks to expand the region’s resident population and to rectify infrastructure inadequacies with the development of Karratha and Port Hedland into cities. “The framework sets the broad future planning direction for the Pilbara region and will help make the Pilbara a better place in which to live, work and invest,” Mr Grylls said. “More affordable housing, greater housing choice and access to higher standards of education, health, recreation and other community services will result in many fly-in fly-out workers choosing to live in the Pilbara on a more permanent basis. “Importantly, the Pilbara’s natural and cultural heritage assets, such as Karijini and the Burrup Peninsula’s rock art will be conserved and celebrated under the framework.” A 60-day comment period is open on the draft framework and closes May 9, 2011. echo Down to Business: Only new to town, Amanda Ewin has been practicing Podiatry for 21 years and has now started up her own business North West Podiatry. After being offered a transfer as a Sales Manager at Statewide Bearings, Amanda, her husband and their two daughters decided it was time for a new adventure to Karratha. Originally from Perth, Amanda had her own business, Swan Podiatry for the past 10 years. “Prior to that my husband and I travelled on a working holiday for 5 years overseas in Europe, the US, NZ and Australia,” she said. In this job Amanda said you often need to have psychology skills as people often offload their problems while having their feet treated.

“I have needed a few boxes of tissues in my time and have developed great listening skills,” she said. “Working with people can be very amusing at times, all ages and all walks of life and some very interesting feet. “I have learnt not to tell people what I do, when I am asked, without expecting them to remove their shoes and tell me all about their own foot problems.” As a podiatrist, Amanda is a foot health professional that treats all kinds of problems relating to the foot and lower leg that can be experienced by everyone from children to seniors. “Podiatrists are concerned with the examination, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of foot ailments by biomechanical, surgical and other treatment modalities,” she said.

Bazz the ‘Joker’ Spirit Radio presenter Barry ‘Bazz’ Harris was up to his old tricks again when April Fool’s Day came around this year. Last year it was a man eating crocodile at the back beach and this year it was Hugh Jackman dancing his way to a Lipton Ice Tea advertisement at Hearson’s Cove. The idea came to Bazz and the rest of the Spirit crew back in February this year when they started deciding on what scenario could be believable yet not to far fetched. “I knew that there were new ads for Lipton Ice Tea being made so we thought this would have been a great idea,” he said. “I deliberately waited until Wednesday (March, 30) to let the news spread so people didn’t have that much time to go research whether it was true or not. “One guy from Port Hedland even got the day off work to drive to Karratha to dance with Hugh and another lady and her child cancelled their flights to Perth. “It was all in good fun and the majority of the people took it in good humor. “One comment I got from a lady

was that she was never going to believe another word that came out of my mouth, I got her last year with the croc and now this year with Hugh.” Social Networks like Facebook gave Bazz the attention that ‘Hugh’ needed with status’s popping up everywhere concerning the whereabouts of Mr Jackman.

Shire to manage new family and youth centre The Karratha Youth and Family Centre, one of Karratha’s newest and most exciting community developments, due for completion in July, is to be managed by the Shire of Roebourne. From a highly competitive group of submissions, the Shire was awarded the contract to manage the $4.5 million centre at the Roebourne Shire Council’s February meeting. Tenders were assessed by the WA Local Government Association with panel members including Regional Development Australia’s West Pilbara Communities for Children initiative and the Shire of Roebourne. The innovative, family friendly facility will include many facilities for children and youth including a fully

air conditioned indoor playground, a cafe, a skate park, a dedicated youth space and a performing arts area. Roebourne Shire Council President Nicole Lockwood said the Karratha Youth and Family Centre would be the “first of its kind” in the Pilbara. Councillor Lockwood said it would provide a safe, vibrant entertainment and recreation venue for families all year round. “The Shire of Roebourne is strongly committed to improving amenity and lifestyle options for all local residents and this purposebuilt facility will help deliver on that goal,” she said. “Personally I can’t wait to sit down, chat with friends over a cuppa and watch my daughters play on

the playground. “Previously I would have had to travel to the city to have this sort of experience.” In the coming weeks the Shire of Roebourne will look to the community, particularly young people aged 12 to 18 years, for suggestions about the types of programs they’d like to see on offer. Councillor Lockwood said the success of the Karratha Youth and Family Centre would be driven by locals telling the Shire “what they want” from the new facility. She urged people to have their say and get involved. The Karratha Youth and Family Centre is proudly supported by the WA Government through Royalties for Regions and the Shire of Roebourne.

Although most TEE graduates head straight to the airport to start their new life at University, a small few, including St Luke’s 2010 graduates Gemma Bickler and Kirsty Frame decided to defer for a year and do things differently. Between the two girls their subjects included English, Maths, Chemistry, Biology, Geography, Physics and Religion so it’s no wonder that they both excelled in their TEE Exams. At the start of Year 11, first getting into TEE Bickler had her heart set on being in Marine Science. “However, once TEE was completed and our offers started coming I was offered a position in Physiotherapy at Norte Dame University,” she said. “I’ve always been interested in Physiotherapy, so I guess it was sort of meant to be.” Kirsty on the other hand had a different approach to earning a high score. “I didn’t know what I wanted to study at

ANZAC DAY SERVICE The Karratha and Districts RSL Sub-branch advises the ANZAC Day Dawn Service and March will held on Monday April 25 (Easter Monday). The annual Dawn Service will be held at the memorial located in front of the Shire of Roebourne Offices, Welcome Road, Karratha. A march will precede the service. Those wishing to march are requested to form up at 5.30am on Welcome Road, west of Klenk Street. The March will commence at 5.40am. The parade will march to the Memorial at the Shire of Roebourne Offices and participants will then fall out for the dawn service. Former and serving military personnel, emergency services personnel and other service organisations are encouraged to attend the March and Dawn Service. Wreaths will be laid during the service. The public is advised Welcome Road will be closed to all vehicles between Sharpe Avenue and Hedland Place from 5.25am until 6.30am on ANZAC Day. Klenk Street will also be closed to vehicles during this time. A gunfire breakfast will be held immediately after the Dawn Service and the public is invited to attend fellowship later in the morning at the RSL Hall situated on Gawthorne Road, Millars Well (access via Dwyer Place). University so I just aimed for the highest score I could get and then I would decide from there,” she said. “At the end of all the commotion I decided on Occupational Therapy at Curtain University.” Unlike most of the graduates who could not wait to get out of the town and start their new life, both Bickler and Frame were in no rush at all. “Year 11 and 12 just flew by way too quick,” Bickler said. “Year 12 in particular was really hectic and we never got the opportunity to enjoy life socially and with family. “So I guess having a year off from study is a way to catch up with everything we missed out on last year.” Frame said if other students getting ready to graduate aren’t ready to leave then not to push themselves. “A lot of people say that you’ll lose interest in study but I don’t believe that will happen to me,” she said.

• 2010 St Luke’s Graduates Kirsty Frame and Gemma Bickler choose to defer their studies for a year. “This year I am just spending time with my family and working as a ward clerk at the Nickol Bay Hospital then I plan to go traveling. “I am still studying on the side of working at Baker’s Temptation,” Bickler said. “It is only a Book Keeping course at the local TAFE but it is enough to keep me occupied and still in study.”

For future students whether in TEE now and or planning to very shortly they say is to talk to your teachers. “Don’t push yourself and find our own study plan,” Bickler said. “And don’t spend all your days doing nothing, you will regret it,” Frame said.

Youth Mentoring for the Pilbara The Department for Communities - Office for Youth together with the Australian Youth Mentoring Network are holding a half day workshop concerning Youth Mentoring Reforms in WA at the Lotteries House on April 13. The Youth Mentoring Reform agenda is an element of the National Partnership - Youth Attainment and Transitions. This agreement issues from the 2009 MCEETYA/ COAG CommonwealthState agreements to raise student attainment in WA from currently around 80% to 87% by 2015. The target is 90% nationally and note that ‘attainment’ here counts as a WACE [Year 12] or a Certificate II for young people to 18 years and/or a Certificate III for those aged 19-24 years). Mentoring is one of the

key strategies being used to assist with this objective. The Department for Communities is conducting consultations across WA with service providers to work out what is the best approach to take when designing and implementing mentoring programs in each of the 12 major regions of Western Australia. Additionally, participants will be given a two hour Professional Development session by Kathleen Vella, Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Youth Mentoring Network, who will outline the current National Benchmarks for youth mentoring across Australia and provide advice for those either seeking to establish a mentoring program and/or strengthen existing programs. Department for Com-

Work, Rest & Play in the inclusive learning unit By Sarah French As term one of the 2011 school year draws to a close, it is time to reflect on what has been a busy start to the year in the Inclusive learning Unit (ILU) at Karratha Senior High School. For those students who made the transition from primary to secondary school it has been a time of enormous change, and managing the demands of the classroom is not the only objective on their mind. Socially, they are trying hard to fit in and forge new friendships and at the same time, students are endeavouring to attain a broader perspective of what high school is all about. In addition, those returning to high school are faced with new challenges. Therefore, students need time to relax in social situations to keep enthusiasm at its

optimum. Every Friday of term one, students of the ILU participated in swimming activities at Roebourne Aquatic Centre. These leisure activities provided the students with the opportunity to relax and enjoy curricular activities outside the classroom. The swimming sessions were oriented towards developing positive relationships, improving body coordination and self management skills, and most importantly having fun in the water! The water based games and activities provided a great way for the students to learn. Students also gained exercise, friendships and increased awareness of issues concerning water safety. Having fun with the students at Roebourne Aquatic Centre has helped further build their confidence, gain

knowledge and assist their social development. The ILU would like to thank the fantastic Shire of Roebourne staff at the Roebourne Aquatic Centre who accommodated us each week by providing the equipment the students needed. We would also like to congratulate the ILU students on their efforts and behaviour when out of the school each Friday. The enthusiasm the students displayed during these outings was nothing short of fantastic. Each week the whole pool was alive with shrieks of laughter as everyone was having a really good time. It was great to see the students congratulate one another on their personal achievements. Well done to all those who attended these outings!

If you are the driver, not only will you be issued with a fine but you will also be given four demerit points. If you are the passenger and you are not wearing your seatbelt you will be issued the $500 fine only. If you are the driver of the vehicle you are also held responsible for your passengers, they must wear their seatbelts or else you could be issued a larger fine. If the passengers are children under the age of 16 and they are not wearing their seatbelt then you could receive a fine for up to $1000. These fines are in place for your safety if you do not want to pay the fine then belt up! Community Information: Karratha Police have been investigating many offences over the last month. The

Splitting sides from laughter with Akmal You might have seen Akmal Saleh on Television programs such as Thank God You’re Here or maybe have his DVD, but locals had the chance to see Akmal in the flesh at the Tambrey Sunset Room on Saturday, April 2. Akmal has been performing stand-up comedy since the early 1990s and it is evident in his live performances he has had many years of experience of being able to make people laugh. There was not one person left not laughing after the two sold out shows for Akmal Saleh’s The Life Of Akmal. During the night, Akmal showcased his vulnerability as a boy and the awkwardness of being a child with limited knowledge of the English language.

Although, being raised by strict Egyptian Coptic Christians, it didn’t stop Akmal from developing a foul mouth and a broad perspective of the world around him. If anything, his upbringing gave him curiosity and a unique insight into two very different cultures, the Middle East and the Western World. When asked after the show

how he felt about the two Karratha shows Akmal said that he hasn’t done a show like that in a long time. “It was a very difficult show to do as there was a group of guys that wouldn’t stop yelling out things,” he said. “I could tell people were getting annoyed with them but at least there was a lot of interactions between me and the audience. “But I did have a lot of fun and I really enjoyed myself.” After the show people were given the opportunity to meet the famous comedian and have his DVD and/or book signed by him.

“The reason why we even decided on a traveling paintball arena was because it’s to difficult to have just one paintball venue located in one place.” Daniel who has been playing paintball for 11 years and used to play pro paintball in South Africa thinks it is a great activity to stay fit with. “You can also vent your frustration and it is a very safe sport if played correctly.” Parent Melissa Munro said that all her children come down to the event everytime paintball is in town.

$22,00 raised from quiz night St Paul’s Primary School held their Quiz Night on Saturday, April 2 to more than 270 people with prizes galore, raising $22,000. St Paul’s Primary School committee President Bev Ardagh said that the school haven’t had a quiz night in four years. “Last year we had a family fun day so we decided on a little change so that the parents can be involved,’ she said. Dinosaurs in Paraburdoo Children in Paraburdoo and Tom Price can experience the excitement of walking with dinosaurs when Rio Tinto, the Shire of Ashburton and Karingal Neighbourhood Centre bring Erth’s Dinosaur Petting Zoo to the Pilbara this Easter school holiday break. From 3pm on Wednesday April 20, dinosaurs will invade the Shire of Ashburton Hall in Paraburdoo, and on Thursday April 21, from 11.30am the dinosaurs will visit the Doug Talbot Park in Tom Price, as part of their tour around Western Australia. Taking children and their parents on a journey through prehistoric Australia, they will learn about the baby minim paravertebra, baby dryosaur, tyrannosaur, meganeura, leptictidium, dwarf allosaur and the leaellynasaura, who lived in Australia hundreds of millions of years ago through the live animal presentation. The amazing puppet show provides children with the opportunity to feed, water and care for the animals, whilst at the same time educating them about the prehistoric age. In addition to these shows, workshops will run for children aged nine to 12 years to make puppets and learn manipulation techniques. They will be in Paraburdoo on Wednesday April 20 from 10.30am to 11.30am and in Tom Price on Thursday April 21 from 1.30pm to 2.30pm. Bookings are essential as places are limited. Oﬀ to Perth to record with Oracle Studios “Never under estimate the power of social networking,” Bakker said as he was asked how Common Bond got to where they are. “Everything we have done has been through Facebook or Myspace, getting hold of Jay Huxtable, seeing Bodhi perform and advertising our gigs.” If you haven’t heard through Facebook already, the guys of Common Bond are heading to Perth to record a demo CD with Jay Huxtable of Oracle Studios. “There are limited resources up here so we decided it was time to take a trip to Perth,” Bakker said. “We facebook stalked Jay Huxtable and the sound he was producing sounded pretty good.

“And he offered to record our demo so we’re stoked.” “The road trip is going to so much fun and we’re going to have our own studio diary thing going on,” Carter-Tulk said. “It isn’t our first demo that we have recorded,” Jupp said. “Gary Foster from Secerno helped us set up our first demo for the song Keen? “It was a great start but it is time to go further.” “The last couple of months we have been getting a lot more serious with our shows, want we want to do and even making merchandise,” Bakker said. They never thought they would get to the point where they would be traveling to

Perth to record a proper demo. “We have to make the most of it cause we don’t have much time in Perth,” Bakker said. “It cost $350 a day for the studio so we’re there for 3 days straight, 72 hours, we’ll be sleeping at the studio and just going at it until it’s finished,” Carter-Tulk said. “We’re really into making this band work, we’re trying so hard and at the end of the day to look back at everything we have achieved is awesome,” Jupp said. But how did Common Bond get together? It all started with Jackson MacLeod wanting to start a new band. Devyn Jupp and MacLeod

Let’s talk about ringworm

It’s not the most popular conversation of the day, but the lack of talking about it has led to a lack of understanding. When you think of ringworm you automatically think of worms, but in fact it has nothing to do with worms – it’s actually several types of fungi. The fungi infection got its name because it has a tendency to spread and it was believed a worm underneath the skin was the cause of it – not true. When looking for ringworm in your pet, it will usually appear as circular patches of hair loss, especially around the head and limbs. Other signs are grey, patchy areas of baldness, with or without redness, itching, dandruff, dry/ flaky skin, and dry and roughened claws. Pets can become infected with ringworm either from direct exposure to an infected animal or human or through the environment, such as contaminated bedding, carpets and furniture. The spores are attached to hairs, which when shed can still be infective for up to 13 months. If you think your pet has ringworm or notice any symptoms, take them straight to the vet where

they will help you with the simple treatment once they have been diagnosed. Ringworm can be treated in various ways such as a medicated shampoo, creams or sometimes oral medication but your vet will explain all of this in detail including the duration of treatment. Recently a mother cat, named Spirit, and her four kittens were found and handed to SAFE, and are now in urgent need of foster care. Foster caring is simply looking after the animal until SAFE has found a suitable permanent home for them. Unfortunately being found homeless on the street, Spirit and her kittens have caught the ringworm infection. They are already undergoing treatment which should be cleared soon with ongoing treatment. As ringworm is contagious, a foster carer without other animals in the household would be most suitable or just someone who has a spare room where they can be kept separately. If you would like to foster Spirit and her four kittens, or if you would like to give any of them a loving new home, please contact SAFE on 9185 4634.

Many sudden illnesses can be fixed or cured, but they can be very expensive to diagnose and then treat! Did you know the average cost of snake bite antivenom is $2500-3500?! That’s not to mention the intensive care and other treatments required. A fracture or other injury from being hit by a car may cost several thousand dollars to fix. Parvovirus is widespread in the Pilbara, and takes weeks and thousands of dollars to treat. Sometimes

pets are sick they require multiple blood tests and other diagnostics to find out what the problem is so it can be treated – this can all add up to more than $1000. I don’t know about you, but I simply don’t have that sort of money lying around. Unfortunately, the medicines and procedures that are subsidised by the government for people cost full price for our pets. It can come as a big shock to receive the news that your best friend needs several thousand dollars worth of treatment, when he or she was fine and running around the yard or chasing geckos just yesterday. It’s a very sad fact that many animals are euthanised simply because we can’t afford to treat them. None of us want to think about our pet being in an accident or getting sick, but

sadly, it does happen. The financial aspect of diagnosis treatment just adds to your stress at the time. Pet insurance is becoming very popular and is a fantastic way of preparing for any adverse events that may occur. With pet insurance you have the peace of mind that if your pet gets sick, you can concentrate on finding the problem and rectifying it, without the added pressure of trying to find the finance. To minimise your premiums and ensure that your pet can be insured, you should take out a plan when they are as young as possible, before any health problems develop. There are several insurance providers in Australia, and most of them provide quotes on their websites. So get online and insure your pet’s future today.

South Women, Port Men The annual Port versus South Water Polo game was played last Friday in front of a large crowd. The association decided to make the annual event in honour of Millie Johnston. Millie, an exceptional water player who made state country teams, was tragically killed while holidaying in South America last year. It was fitting that Millie’s parents made the journey to Hedland for the evening to celebrate the event.

In the women’s match, it was the South team who flew the blocks quickly to take an 11 – 5 lead at the main break. The goals continued to flow for South in the second half and they had the game sewn up by three quarter time. South ran out victors 23 – 7. Kathryn Schwalger was voted as the game’s best player, scoring 9 goals. The men’s match was a very tough, high quality affair.

Ambrose Event Starts the Winter Competition By Monica Plane This week’s competition was an Ambrose event and was an excellent way to open the start of the 18 hole winter competition at the Karratha Golf Club. Ambrose is a team event and a real favourite among the Karratha golfers. Eighty four golfers turned up and were sent off in teams of four players. The windy conditions soon subsided as the afternoon progressed. Sponsors for this event were the Karratha Country Club. In the novelty prizes, the nearest to pin on hole

three and eleven was Rob Smith, on hole eight was Wayne Barnard, and on hole sixteen was Gregg Abraham. The longest putt on hole eighteen was Ben Ta Whiti and hole nine was Bodie Broun. Leroy Thompson won the longest men’s drive on hole one and Laurel Chadwick won the longest ladies drive on hole ten. Rhonda Swelling took out the shortest ladies drive on hole one. In the main event the team in fifth position on a gross of 67, nett 56.375 was Danny Cam, John Abbott, Phil Kennedy and Gary Rayson.

In fourth position on a gross of 67, nett 56.25 was Mark Smytgh, Bunja, Dot Abbott and Wayne Hansen. Third position was won by Wally Robinson, Marie Coetzer, Alan Nolan and Sue Byrne on a gross of 69, nett 54.875. Runners up for the day were Bodie broun, Yabbie, grog and Owen Leece on a gross of 62, nett 54.75. Winning the ambrose event on a gross of 66, nett 53.75 was Darren Bier, Angie Rata, Chopper and Michelle Bennett. Next week is the first 18 hole stroke event. With a field of fourteen starters in the Ironman event, and four teams in the pony express, the Rocklea Loop enduro series got underway on Sunday, March 27 in Paraburdoo. Event organiser Barry Johnston said it was a great start to the season. “There are some old faces from last season and a few new faces to keep things rolling,” he said. It was the big European bike of Dave Duell that led the way from the Le Mans start to the three hour race time. Dave, from Tom Price racked up nine laps on his Husaberg 560 to take the chequered flag three minutes in front of his closest rival, Clint Page on his Honda CRF 450. The first lap saw a rider come to grief when Tim Shepherd took the wrong side of a washout and hit the deck pretty hard to end up with injuries which looks like he has ended his season for this year. Event organiser Barry Johnson pulled out on the first lap to help care for the injured Tim until the ambulance arrived. In a first for the series, Jess Salin was the first female to enter the Ironman event and finish the race in 11th place with six laps of the track to her credit. The Pony Express team of David Morphett and Rebecca Belford also saw another

enduro career, Ryan Escott from Paraburdoo placed well in seventh place, even after he managed to tangle his KTM 150sx into a barbed wire fence, but with the help of some fellow riders he was soon underway again only to have to pull in to quickly change a flat tyre. This young gun will be one to keep an eye on in the future. The event is well sponsored with Budget Car Rental in Paraburdoo helping to make the series possible. Fun Day at Moto X Karratha Enduro and Motor Cross Club held a Registration/ Fun Day on Sunday, March 27. The day’s events had spectators witnessing riders racing around the track wearing feathery boas, wedding dresses and other outrageous costumes. Captain Gerald Mitchell and Mairi from the Salvation Army who are bike enthusiasts themselves were there to ‘Bless the track’ and asked to help keep the riding fast and safe. An extra prayer was said for Karratha to win the Northwest Championship trophy for the 2011 season. The day was a great success with a large number of nominations coming from newcomers to the Karratha area. Karratha is one of the

largest motor x clubs outside the metro area and has several state and national riders in its membership. Competitors range from four to 50 years and older and they encourage anyone who wants to ride to come down to their first race round Sunday, April 10 with gates dropping at 9am. There is full bar and canteen facilities available with upgraded amenities and plenty of shade available for spectators. They welcome all new and old faces and can’t wait to see everyone at the track on Shallow Well Road, LIA for another exciting year of racing. KASC ready to swim By Janine Wain

• Karratha Swimmers Jack Clarke & Dylan Bennetts will be competing again this year

Karratha is about to become a little busier this weekend with an influx of visitors coming to town for the annual North West Open Swimming Championships. Swimmers and their families travel from all over the state to compete in the annual event. Preparations for the Karratha swimmers have been a little different this year, with the pool only reopening this week due to damage from the tornado that hit the town back in February. Only a week ago, Karratha Amateur Swimming Club (KASC) was uncertain if the event was even going to go ahead. With uncertainty over the pool opening and the fact that they have not been able to have their regular time trial nights, the event was under consideration to be cancelled. With officials and competitors travelling from all over the state, the event requires enormous organisation and preparations. Fortunately the swimming club has a wonderful committee and fantastic parents who were all willing to lend a hand and ensure the event would continue. This was also made possible by the hard working team of coaches, Sandi Clarke, Erin Shaylor, Amanda Bloomfield, Sara McRobb and Kristi Thomas who have worked tirelessly with the swimmers and prepared them

• Parent helpers at last years NWO Deb Williamson, Tracey Stewart and Michelle Waddington will be working hard again this year to ensure the event runs smoothly for the event, and Shane Byrne from Bay Village, who allowed the swimmers use of the Bay Village pool in the lead up to the North West Open. This meant swimmers could keep up with their training whilst the Karratha Aquatic Centre was being repaired. The North West Open began back in 1992 and is now in it's 20th year. It is an individual event hosted each year by the Karratha Amateur Swimming Club. Hundreds of swimmers are encouraged to have a go and try to beat personal best times. The event is open to all swimmers over the age of seven and often sees more than 20 competitors compete in some

age groups. Hundreds of competitors travel to compete each year and this year is no different, with 10 clubs competing at the championships. Racing began today at 8.30am with a full day of racing and then continues on Sunday with half a day of competition. As in previous years, there is sure to be some fantastic personal best times achieved and some very competitive races as swimmers vie for gold medals. KASC would like to thank all of the sponsors who have made this event possible and would encourage everyone to come down to the Aquatic centre this weekend to watch the action in the pool.
