Travelling musician in fatal accident By Tamara Binamat A musician travelling to Port Hedland for a performance has died after a car he was driving rolled multiple times on the North West Coastal Highway. The 33-year-old man from Mandurah was travelling
north when the vehicle left the road 20 kilometres north of Nanutarra. A 28-year-old man, who was a passenger in the car, was uninjured while a 30-year-old female passenger suffered serious injuries and was taken to Royal Perth Hospital for treatment.
Onslow Police are still unsure why the vehicle left the road, but investigations suggest the car, which was towing a trailer, hit a gravel patch before leaving the sealed road and rolling approximately five times. Police believe dangerous driving is not a cause of the single vehicle accident.
Pilbara Traffic’s Operation Taskin
Almost 2,000 nabbed in Pilbara traffic blitz By Tamara Binamat Over 1900 drivers were detected speeding during Operation Earlybird Pilbara last weekend, part of a traffic blitz in conjunction with Operation Taskin, targeting speeding and drink drivers. As part of Operation Earlybird Pilbara, one driver was caught travelling at 46 kilometres per hour above the posted speed limit on Karratha Road, near the Light Industrial Area. The Karratha male will be charged with reckless driving, lose his licence for six months and have his car impounded. Around 20 drivers were charged by summons for other traffic offences. Operation Earlybird Pilbara ran from Monday November 26 to Saturday December 1 and commenced at 4am daily. Pilbara Traffic Officers utilised a Vitronic Speed Camera to monitor drivers at numerous locations in Karratha, Roebourne and Point Samson. Sergeant Steve Scott, officer in charge of Pilbara Traffic said these figures should be a concern to all motorists. “We know speeding is a causal factor in over 20 per cent of fatal and serious crashes in the Pilbara,” he said. In most cases, offenders were caught speeding with a speed camera, but there was also a number of on the spot infringements issued by Pilbara Traffic.
“That time of the morning, often when people are just waking up, they’re not as alert as they could be,” Sargeant Scott said. “It’s still dark and it’s a recipe for disaster.” Operation Taskin was conducted on the weekend of December 1 and 2 with the Breath and Drug Bus being deployed in Karratha and Wickham. Karratha Police also apprehended a number of drink drivers during normal patrols. Over 1,500 drivers were subjected to a random breath test and 14 drivers were charged in relation to drink driving offences, including two drivers charged with a DUI. Karratha Police will continue to target drivers over the Christmas period. “We normally see a spike unfortunately, in serious and fatal crashes with a lot more people travelling within the Pilbara and the state,” said Sargeant Scott. “We’ll be focusing on speeding, drink driving and non use of restraints, such as seatbelts, because we know that those three are the major causal factors for crashes up here.” Sergeant Scott said his message is simple. “If you are going to drink, plan not to drive, arrange a skipper or organise for someone to collect you,” he said. “If you choose to drink and drive we will catch you.”

Keystart to inject $30 million into local economy to increase low-income home ownership By Tamara Binamat
• Keystart sales and relationship manager Lisa Di Cesare and Keystart CEO John Coles at a breakfast seminar in Karratha
news@pilbaraecho.com.au echoletters Thank you to honest Exmouth resident Dear editor, I would like to offer many thanks to the honest resident from Exmouth, who dropped our car keys into the police station after we lost them around town last week. We were on a camping trip up north from Perth with two 4WDs and a couple of tents and thought it would be a great idea to hide the car keys under the car at
nights so we could all access them if needed. That was a disaster waiting to happen when we took the car for a drive and used the other set of keys to drive it. Long story short, we backtracked the whole trip of that day without finding the keys but were very happy to learn the next morning that they had been handed
into the local police. We left Exmouth with only positive thoughts. Kind regards, Iwan Boskamp. All letters must be signed and addressed. Profanity is unacceptable. As a home loan company, Keystart is generally concentrated on the metro area, but all that is set to change, as Housing Minister Terry Redman has announced his support to change Keystart’s regional lending criteria. Previously, income and purchase price limits for the Pilbara was capped at $70,000 for singles for a home worth up to $500,000. Now, under the new scheme, single homebuyers can earn up to $110,000 and buy a home worth up to $850,000. “We are doing a special project for the Pilbara for first and subsequent home-buyers,” explained Keystart CEO John Coles. “From the Housing Minister’s point of view they want to see these towns grow and unless you’re building new houses, towns can’t grow.” “The housing price and the income cut-off never have fit the North West.” Lisa Di Cesare, Sales and Relationship Manager at Keystart said the changes are necessary to allow Keystart benefits for North West homeowners. “We’ve increased the income limits, we’ve done an extensive analysis on what income limits are in this area, we’ve looked at what the median house prices are in this area then we’ve lifted our capping in line with that,” said Ms Di Cesare. “We’ve got a lower deposit minimum than all your other mainstream lenders.” Keystart will offer a $30 million pilot program to the Pilbara, with the flow-on effect injecting a potential $80 million
into the local economy. “If you look at the spin-off effect of people building houses, that gives a multiplier employment factor of about eight” said Mr Coles. “You could look at creating work for other people that may be, for the whole region, worth $60 to 80 million.” The most recent Census data shows 89,000 West Australians are earning between $70,00 and $150,000 who are renting or sharing accommodation because they cannot secure a home loan. Keystart hosted a breakfast function in Karratha on Thursday to launch the changes and promote the program to local mortgage brokers, real estate agencies and company housing officers. Cheryl Underwood from the Mortgage Gallery said the current lending program needed a revamp. “You have all these people who come up here for a job on the mines, that end up on a higher income, but struggle to get the deposit required from the banks,” said Ms Underwood. “I had some one the other day that would have fit the new criteria but I had to send them to another lender.” Mr Coles added, “This is something that’s been requested for a fair while, so we’ll monitor the program”. “Initially we’ve allocated the $30 million for the Pilbara under these conditions but if it proves successful we’ll revisit that and increase funding if necessary.” For more information visit Keystart’s website at www.keystart.com.au.

Port Hedland Police are investigating the town’s biggest synthetic cannabis seizure after being alerted to suspicious parcels delivered to a local post office. Police attended the post office on a search warrant, discovering a delivery containing 100 bags of K2, a brand of synthetic cannabis. The package was addressed to a local business and when police questioned the recipient, they were alerted to another package arriving the following day. The substance will be sent off for analysis and Port Hedland Police said if K2 has been seized before it could possibly be listed on the banned substance list, meaning K2 is an illegal substance. Up until the product is proven as illegal the product is seized as evidence. Officer in charge at Port Hedland Police Station Sargeant Gentili explained, “Once it gets analysed, we’ll know whether it was or wasn’t on the list”. “If it was on the list, charges of possession with intent to sell or supply would be preferred, if it’s not on the list, it will then be added to the list and destroyed with no charges preferred.” Sargeant Gentili said the packages contained Port Hedland Police’s largest synthetic cannabis seizure.

Operation Unite targets night spots Hundreds of additional police will patrol night spots across Western Australia this weekend, December 7 to 9, targeting alcohol-related violence for Operation Unite. Police said emergency services, police and health department resources continue to be stretched when responding to alcohol-related injuries, assaults and associated violent behaviour. Operation Unite is an opportunity for police to highlight how excessive alcohol consumption and risky drinking behaviour can lead to violence and disorder. “This weekend, police will call on the community to think about the consequences of behaviour when out drinking long after the night is over,” said Jon White, CEO of ANZPAA. “Society has reached a tipping
point with regard to the detrimental impact of alcohol on our health, wellbeing and safety.” WA Police Operation Unite Commander, Superintendent Peter De La Motte said the abuse of alcohol is an issue that affects the safety and comfort of community members. “We want to send a strong and clear message to the community about the dangers of excessive drinking and its significant contribution to night time violence,” he said. Operation Unite involves overt and covert licensing operations, random breath testing, mounted police, dog squad and additional police patrols. During the last operation in December 2011, 542 people were charged in WA alone.

Awesome Antonov lands in Karratha Local resident Stephen Boyd knows a big opportunity when he sees one. When Stephen heard that a massive Russian-built Antonov 124 cargo aircraft was landing at Karratha airport, he raced down to take some snaps. Stephen said it was a unique chance to see an engineering marvel. “I went to have a look just because of the sheer size of it, it’s amazing to see at the
Karratha Airport, its just huge,” he said. “The size was very impressive, it was heaps bigger than a 747.” The Antonov was transporting helicopters that will be used by Canadianowned company CHC Helicopters. CHC fly a number of choppers out of the Karratha airport as part of its multimillion dollar contract with oil and gas major Woodside.
Pleistocene poo yields Australia’s oldest DNA An ancient Pilbara poo has provided Western Australian scientists with the oldest DNA sample ever recovered in Australia. Murdoch University DNA scientists were able to use 30,000-year-old faecal matter, known as middens, to identify a number of plants and animals that were living in the region at the time. PhD candidate Dáithí Murray from Murdoch’s Ancient DNA Lab said the discovery was equally remarkable for the fact that up until this point it had
been considered unrealistic to extract DNA from samples in hot, arid zones. “Cool and frozen environments are considered most suitable to long-term DNA preservation,” Mr Murray said. “We were not expecting some of these samples to work.” “But new … DNA technologies and techniques have allowed us to take a closer look at these warm but dry environments, which have a delicate ecological balance, and are therefore of considerable environmental and biological interest.”
Mr Murray extracted DNA samples from midden material – which consists of animal faeces and urine, bone, hair and eggshells and plant and animal tissue that had become cemented together over hundreds of years – in four locations. Three were from hot, arid regions in Western Australia and one was from South Africa’s Western Cape province. All samples were dated between 700 and 30,000 years old. Mr Murray said that by comparing genetic information
in old faeces to present day plant and animal surveys, scientists could better understand how these regions have changed over time. The Western Australian samples, for instance, contained DNA from a number of plant and animal species, which are now extinct in that area. These included the common brushtail possum found in one midden from the Cavenagh Range. Mr Murray was also identified a range of arid zone grasses that had not been found in previous
studies. Mr Murray said that the information gained from ancient samples helps build a foundation that can be used to understand today’s environment. “We cannot monitor environmental change if we have no baseline to compare it against,” Mr Murray said. “These middens provide the time capsule we need to make those comparisons in the arid zone.”

WHAT’S COMING UP AT THE WALKINGTON AMPHITHEATRE
A new $8.5 million funding grant will help conservationists reintroduce small mammals to Dirk Hartog Island in the Shark Bay World Heritage area in a bid to restore the island to its pre-European condition. Environment Minister Bill Marmion visited the island last week and said the program would involve removing introduced plants and animals, reintroducing extinct native wildlife and enforcing strict biosecurity measures to protect the island. “Dirk Hartog is not only one of the world’s most important islands for mammal conservation, but it is also historically significant because it is the site of the first European landing in Western Australia in 1616,” Mr Marmion said. “Almost 400 years ago, the island was pristine and there were at least 13 ground-dwelling native mammal species. “In the past 150 years, the island has been used by pastoralists, recreational fishers and campers, and by the late 20th century, weeds, sheep, goats and feral cats were well established, leaving just three small mouse-sized native mammal species. “In 2009, Dirk Hartog Island became a national park, providing the Department of Environment and Conservation with
the opportunity to restore its natural environment in partnership with the island’s other land managers.” The DEC has received $8.5million over seven years from the Gorgon Barrow Island Net Conservation Benefits fund to deliver the first stage of a project which could take 20 or more years to complete. The DEC will contribute another $4.8 million to the first stage. “Alongside weed removal, the first pillar of the restoration will involve the removal of sheep, goats and feral cats from the island,” Mr Marmion said. “This will be one of the most extensive feral animal eradications ever attempted in the world.” “[It] will be followed by the introduction of at least 10 species of mammal that are locally extinct on the island. “[These include] the boodie, woylie, western barred bandicoot, chuditch, brush-tailed mulgara, dibbler, greater stick-nest rat and three mice species as well as the banded SIZZLING hare-wallaby and the mala or rufous-hareSUMMER wallaby. “The successful establishment DEAL! of these animals will be a huge achievement for DEC and further elevate the WorldHeritage listed Shark Bay on the international conservation stage.”

WA boxer Danny Green has toured the Pilbara stopping at Tom Price, Paraburdoo, Karratha Port Hedland and Newman to host fundraising auctions supporting each town. Auction items included signed gloves and memorabilia and Green Machine merchandise. Danny said visiting the school kids in each town was just as important to him as the paid events. “I wanted to go and see the school kids and their questions were very intelligent,” he said. “I was expecting a lot of funny ones, and there were the funny ones, but they’re a smart bunch of kids and really nice. “In each town, I want to go see the kids,

I want to see the locals, not just the people who pay, I want to see as many people as I can because I’ve had a lot of support from the Pilbara. “The people up here show me a lot of love and support and they’re real people.” Part of the proceeds from the auction will go back to each community. Tom Price will receive funds for their cricket association and Newman will receive a contribution to the Newman Main Street project. The Middleton family in Karratha received a visit from Green and will benefit from the auction in Karratha. “I’m making some new friends and contacts for the future and I’ll come back for sure,” said Green. “It’s a pleasure to be here and I’m looking forward to coming back, having a few stubbies and enjoying my time up here.”

The Exmouth Town Centre and Foreshore Revitalisation aims to create increased community spaces and a vibrant retail district that will be able to accommodate future demand for commercial floor space. Shire of Exmouth chief executive officer Bill Price said Shire councillors voted to permanently close sections of Payne Street and Bonefish Street to create the community space. “Realignment of Payne Street will enlarge Federation Park as a community space in the heart of our town,” Mr Price said. “It provides an opportunity to create an improved public entry to the swimming pool … and improved setting for community events and activities. “The closure of Bonefish Street aims to reduce the restraints within the town creek for storm water
events [by removing] the existing culvert structures at Bonefish Street and re-establishing natural creek levels. Approximately 90 metres of the southern section of Payne Street will be closed and converted into parkland, while Bonefish Street will be closed between Maidstone Crescent and Carpenter Street. The current stage of development will also involve the redevelopment of a number of streets and parking areas near the town centre to provide greater access to the retail shops on the main street. Additonally, there will be new landscaping, paving, lighting and street furniture, plus new public toilets and a stage for community performances. A highlight will be the construction of a water playground, known as a sprayground, which councillors voted to locate along the northwestern edge of Federation Park, opposite the Ross Street Mall. Alternative vehicle access to compensate for the road closures will be provided by creating Thew Street as a connection between Maidstone Crescent and Kennedy Street.

The proof is in the pudding’s taste
Puddings tested were those that were available in major supermarkets in October 2012 as well as a number of smaller boutique brands that are readily available online or through national distributors. For supermarket brands that had more than one pudding product we selected one pudding from their upper-tiered range and one from their standard/traditional range. Puddings were re-heated according to manufacture instructions before being presented to three expert judges.

Pilbara residents looking for the best Christmas pudding this season should pay a little extra, according to a taste test by Australian Consumer Association group Choice. The Choice experts found that more expensive Christmas puddings generally tasted better than their budget counterparts. The team of tasters sampled 14 Christmas puddings ranging in price from 71 cents per 100 grams to $5.50 per 100 grams. The puddings were all available nationally, either from major supermarket outlets or from the Internet. Choice spokesperson Ingrid Just said the supermarket and boutique brands were assessed for general appearance, quality of finish, moisture, texture, mixture quality, flavour and aroma. “The best pudding was Itha’s Traditional Plum Pudding,” Ms Just said. “Testers liked the homemade appearance, well prepared fruit and the consistency of the cake mixture.” “At $4.20 per 100 grams, Itha’s Traditional Plum Pudding sits at the more expensive end of the scale.” “[But] our testers said that generally a higher price indicates better quality ingredients and a better tasting pudding.” The four best tasting puddings were all priced above $3.60 per 100 grams. The testers’ best budget buy was the Woolworths Gold Vintage Christmas Pudding at $1.98 per 100 grams.
Testers liked the look of the pudding’s decorative glace orange slices and commented on the pudding’s fruitiness and moist texture. The popular Lions Traditional Christmas Pudding at $1.63 per 100 grams was another that scored reasonably well against other less expensive puddings. “Puddings that didn’t rate as well had cheaper ingredients and had a gluggy consistency,” Ms Just said. The Coles and Woolworth’s mid-tier Homebrand puddings and both puddings from Aldi did not rate well. “Whether it be a homemade pudding or a shop-bought product, a Christmas pudding made from quality ingredients is not cheap or quick and easy to make,” Ms Just said. “So it’s reasonable to assume you might have to fork out a little more for a top-quality pud.” CHOICE Christmas pudding taste test results:
Best Tasting: Itha’s Traditional Plum Pudding $4.20 per 100g
Best Budget Buy: Woolworths Gold Vintage Christmas Pudding $1.98 per 100g
Centro shoppers to enjoy the gift of giving Centro Karratha shoppers are being encouraged to give generously again this year to the Salvation Army’s Christmas Wishing Tree Appeal. The appeal will run from Wednesday December 5 to Sunday 23 December and involves redistributing donated Christmas presents to families in need. On any given night in Australia there are more than 25,000 homeless families in need. Christmas can be one of the toughest times for homeless or disadvantaged families and donated gifts can help brighten their festive season. Each year, the Salvos collect around 450,000 donated presents and hampers, and this year they are
hoping to increase that number to 500,000. Centro Karratha hopes to play its part by collecting a minimum of 500 presents for the Salvation Army. Presents will then be distributed unwrapped so that parents may personally choose a gift to wrap and give to their child for Christmas. Customers are encouraged to give generously so that they may bring the spirit of Christmas to the families most in need. To donate a gift simply take a tag from one of the wishing trees located at any Centro Karratha retailer point of sale, then indicate the age and gender of the recipient and drop off the present to the collection point at Kmart Centro Karratha.

Seniors Christmas party a success
The Shire of Roebournes’s annual Christmas party went off with a bang this week as 48 seniors from the region attended Christmas lunch in Dampier. For entertainment, 50 students from Dampier Primary School Choir performed Christmas carols and songs. It was the first time the event was held at the Dampier Community Hall, where six year 6 students helped seniors with their lunch, made sure drinks were topped up, cleared plates and welcomed and said goodbye. Year 7 students handed out handmade Christmas ornaments as gifts and, of course, Santa visited to hand out lolly bags.
Donate to Frontier Services to support remote Australia Frontier Services have released a series of Christmas Gift Cards it says will help give hope to remote Australians. “Facing isolation, drought, fire and flood, our resilient neighbours in remote Australia survive with minimal access to health and childcare and the challenges of extreme distance,” the Frontier Services promotion said. “Frontier Services Christmas Gift Cards provide you with an opportunity to buy a gift for someone you know that will make a world of difference in remote Australia, long after the tinsel comes down and presents are unwrapped.” The not-for-profit organisation that provides aged care, health, family and community services and pastoral support to people in remote Australia has also
released a guide, reprinted below, about how each gift card can help the community. The gift of a good start to life. For $25, you can help give children in remote Australia a happy and healthy start to life by providing essential funds to enable the provision of early childhood and parenting support for remote families, who otherwise would not have access to these vital services. The gift of a helping hand. For $50, you can support the placement of a volunteer through the Frontier Services’ Outback Links volunteering program, which utilises a workforce of skilled volunteers to help alleviate the struggles of isolated families, individuals and in some cases, entire communities. The gift of a friend in times of need. For $100, you can
help put a Patrol Minister on the road, travelling sometimes hundreds of kilometres to visit individuals and families in isolated and remote areas. Patrol Ministers are part of their communities – called upon in times of need to offer pastoral care and friendship to people from all walks of life. The gift of independence. For $250, you can help purchase wheelchairs and other medical equipment for Frontier Services’ aged care facilities, increasing the independence and quality of life of residents in remote Australia. The gift of love. Choose the amount you want to give and you will be bringing hope to those isolated by distance, by enabling to facilitate over 120 support services across remote Australia.

Job seekers can earn more over the holiday season support payments are reduced. “If you haven’t worked, or have worked very little, in the lead-up to Christmas, you can take up shortterm holiday work and it may not affect your Centrelink payment.” Senator Carr said job seekers receiving Youth Allowance could build up to a maximum of 3,500 working credits, while those on Newstart Allowance could accrue up to 1,000 working credits. He said job seekers could keep track of their working credits online or on their Smartphone. “Job seekers can check their working credit balance on their mobile using the Express Plus Job Seekers App, which is available for download for Apple or Android devices from iTunes or Google Play,” he said. “They can also monitor their working credits online through Centrelink Online Services. “Working credit is especially handy for job seekers, who receive irregular wages,” Senator Kim Carr said. Job seekers can learn more about working credit at humanservices. gov.au/workingcredit.

Job seekers employed over the holiday season are reminded they can earn extra without affecting their income support payments, under the Government’s Working Credit scheme. Minister for Human Services Senator Kim Carr said the festive season was a good time for job seekers receiving Newstart or Youth Allowance to learn more about the scheme, which is available all year round. “Working Credit is a Centrelink scheme that allows people of workforce age, receiving income support payments, excluding Special Benefit, to keep more of their payments when they start fulltime, part-time or casual work,” Senator Carr said. “You automatically build up working credits when you have little or no income. “When your total income is $48 or less in a fortnight, you receive one working credit for every dollar under the $48 threshold. “Then when you start work, Centrelink will use your working credits to increase how much you can earn before your income

Happy Christmas
C
Christmas is the time of sharing presents and peace. It is a time for reflection.
St Luke’s College has reflected on all the help and assistance it has received over the 25 years of its existence. From its humble beginnings in 1987, St Luke’s College has grown to be an integral part of the education of the Pilbara and West Australia and it is now regarded as a top school in the state. St Luke’s College has a diversified curriculum that caters for students on academic and trade based pathways. The College offers the complete list of elite ATAR subjects. In addition to this academic pathway, because of the close association with Pilbara Institute, students are provided with opportunities to complete certificates in Engineering, Beauty, Child Services, Business, Telecommunications and Information Technology. Quality of Staff The Staff of St Luke’s is very highly qualified with many members of the teachers holding Masters Degrees. All areas of the curriculum are staffed by content experts thus ensuring top quality delivery. There is a commitment to assisting staff in their learning by providing opportunities for professional development and extended learning. Some staff members have undertaken studies in the Certificate IV in Assessment and Training and others are undertaking studies in Masters degrees. In the course of the Masters studies, one staff member was invited to present in Oman on the pedagogy of Mathematics and Science.
Curriculum
St Luke’s College boasts the delivery of a quality Curriculum which will appeal to students on the Academic or Practical Pathway. Academic Pathway At Senior School level, St Luke’s College provides the full range of Science, Mathematics, English and Humanities. This is in addition to the delivery of a quality Arts program with Media, Drama and Visual Arts. Trade and Practical Pathway Students are provided with opportunities to complete certificates in Engineering, Telecommunications, Beauty, Child Services, Business and Information Technology. Lower School In Lower School the full range of subjects is provided. Art Exhibitions, Extravaganza and the Annual College Show are but some of what occurs at St Luke’s College. Students study Drama, Media and Visual Arts in Upper School and Drama, Visual Arts, Media, Photography and Music in Lower School.
Year 8 Japanese St Luke’s College embraces the government aim of increasing the exposure to Asian studies. From 2013, beginning with Year 8, students will be undertaking Japanese as part of their Curriculum.
Through a special Extension Class, some Year 10 Mathematics and Science students will be prepared for high order subjects in Year 11 and 12 resulting in even higher ATAR scores.
Where do St Luke’s Students Go? In the past 5 years, the majority of St Luke’s students have gone to university. Between 60% and 70% of the students have gone to Perth either the year after Graduation of else they have taken a Gap Year. The University of Western Australia, Curtin University, Murdoch University and Notre Dame University would be the four main institutions educating our students.

Space and freedom shine through in Pilbara photographer’s exhibition By Jan Hassack
instantly, it took me a while to develop a narrative and understand just what it was about the Pilbara that I loved so much. I came to realise that it was not just the landscape that is unlike anything else in Australia, but it is also about the remoteness of the region. You can sit in places and look at the countryside and not see a single sign of humans for as far as the eye can see. There will be no fence line, mobile phone tower, often not even a road. This brings a sense of freedom that you cannot find in many other parts of Australia anymore. For me the more remote, the better and that is what I try and bring through in my images.
I have been trying to capture these with my camera for several years. Along the way, my family and friends have encouraged me to take more and more pictures. That helped me decide to hold a solo exhibition. My images capture a wide range of topics, from the sweeping and unmistakable Pilbara landscapes to tiny birds and flowers that we often don’t pay any attention to until they are mounted in frames and printed in large images. I believe it was this eye for detail and ability to tell a story through my images that helped me recently win first place in two categories of the Water Corporation’s WaterWise competition. However, this did not come
Local photographer Jan Hassack is having her first solo exhibition in the Dampier Community Hall on Saturday December 1 between 2pm and 7pm. She told the Pilbara Echo in her own words, why she was drawn to snapping pictures of the Pilbara’s desert animals and landscapes. I have been taking photographs for as long as I can recall, but this is different because I’ve now made the decision to put my images on public display. I’ve done this because the Pilbara is an amazing place for taking photographs. The landscape, the plants, the animals, they all make for stunning images.

Pilbara artists prepare for Dampier Art Awards Pilbara artists will be pulling out their easels and brushes ahead of the 2013 Dampier Arts Awards and Exhibition to be held next March. Local artists wishing to take part need to submit their entries before February 22, 2013, and address the competition theme, “From little things, big things grow”. The Dampier Art Awards are designed to capture the essence of what life is like living and working in the Pilbara. With that in mind, this year’s theme invites local artists to reflect on how life in the Pilbara is changing due to the expanding resources sector and local land developments and what it might look like in the future. The winner will not only take home a prize but have the opportunity to describe the story behind their artwork.
This year, the awards will also be open to three dimensional artworks, such as sculptures. There are six categories, including the Dampier Art Award Theme, Pilbara Landscape, Painting Open, Works on Paper, Coastal Theme and Three Dimensional Art. Entries open on February 1 with winners announced on March 16 and artworks to be exhibited from March 17 to 24. In addition to the competition, The Arts and Everything Group will hold a series of workshops in Dampier under the foreshore palms. There are six Art Under the Palms workshops scheduled to run before the art awards close with tentative dates as follows; December 9 and 16, January 13 and 20 and February 17 and 24. Having young kids is a wild ride indeed, with worlds to be conquered, dreams to be enacted and an obstreperous mess to clean up. Most of all, though, children feed us their imaginations. A banana can be a phone, Mummy can transform into a warrior and a walk in a garden can truly be where the wild things are.
A Wild Ride Two little girls they sat in a boat a’sailing out to sea. ‘Where are you headed?’ I called aloud and their eyes lit up with glee.
unconcerned by the holes in its side. But nay, not to fear, for the girl in the rear stuffed them well with odd socks, with great pride.
‘South America,’ was the reply and they rocked and tipped in the swell the younger one poised at the stern, arms wide like that scene with Titanic’s young belle.
A’jiggle and wriggle, they shared not much room for their blue-hole-plugged boat might cause strife. ‘You comfy in there?’ was my query to them, ‘Can I fit too?’… Away they sailed in their wobbly ‘No! Not on your life!’ blue boat,
Bogan Bingo to help Exmouth kids ROSENGREN
These two little girls sang songs about stars, ate vegetable patties for snacks, splashed sauce everywhere (on this wild ride, who cared?!), got sploshed by their drink bottles stacks!
Two little girls, they giggled and clambered and out of the boat they both climbed. Call South America ‘done’ for the day, I hung up the socks on the line,
The anchor was wound (it was hot pink no less) through spare starboard holes neatly tied and when they were done with their journey today it was unlooped and dropped off the side.
I hung up the undies on which they both sat and wiped up the sauce and the mess, retrieved the pink shoelace, from their blue boat with holes - ‘twas my washing basket…how did you guess?
NAB Auskick and Exmouth PCYC recently held a “Bogan Bingo” fundraiser to support their local Auskick teams. Around 80 Exmouth Auskick participants have the opportunity to travel to Perth to play football at half time during a Western Derby AFL match, and funds from Bogan Bingo will go toward associated costs. The adults only event was held at the Shire Hall and was a huge success, with a great turn-out from welldressed bogans.

Department of Education director general Sharyn O’Neill congratulated all 16 winners in the WA Education Awards 2012. “These teachers, principals and support staff are highly committed to the work they do and are changing children’s lives one school day at a time,” Ms O’Neill said. “In addition, the two winning public schools – West Balcatta Primary School and Broome Senior High School – are truly at the forefront of excellent education in this State.” Education Minister Peter Collier said there was a diverse collection of winners this year. “The winners range from a teacher beginning her career in the small Yerecoin Primary School in the Wheatbelt to an experienced principal at the helm of the impressive Manea
Senior College in Bunbury,” he said. “It is particularly encouraging to see a couple of careerchangers, who are bringing expertise from the veterinary and occupational therapy fields to the classroom, acknowledged at these awards,” he said. The WA Education Awards 2012 are sponsored by BHP Billiton Iron Ore, Teachers Health Fund, 92.9, Edith Cowan University, Delron Cleaning and Teachers Mutual Bank. A radical career change is paying off for Tom Price Senior High School teacher Kirsten Hunter, who was today named one of eight winners of the WA Beginning Teacher of the Year. Originally arriving in Tom Price in 2010 as the town’s vet, Ms Hunter instead decided to pursue her desire to teach by starting out as a relief teacher at the local school a couple of days a week. Now in her first year of full-time teaching, she has proved a valuable asset to the school’s science department, taking over the Stage 2 Human Biological Science course. Deputy principal Nicole Kelly said Ms Hunter’s background as a vet gave her an extensive pool of science knowledge to draw on. “She applies this knowledge to develop engaging activities for students such as making

New book aims to transform Indigenous social work practices
K 18
A new book about social work with Indigenous Australians could help shape future programs among Aboriginal communities, according to a University of Western Australia researcher. The UWA’s assistant professor Violet Bacon was the lead author of Our Voices: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Work, which includes contributions from Indigenous and nonIndigenous social work educators and students from around Australia. Ms Bacon has been teaching the Indigenous People and Social Work unit at UWA for 14 years and said the book helped social workers understand Indigenous history, culture and communications. She said one lesson was to always commence each session among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people by having a yarn and listening to their story “A quote from a non-Aboriginal social worker cited in the book and in our research is: ‘People like to know where you are from, why you are there, and that’s a start in developing that relationship’,” Ms Bacon said. Another contributor, associate professor Dawn Bessarab of Curtin University, said the authors hoped the book would be used to help social work better meet ethical and moral aims. Our Voices explores social work practice including cultural supervision, working with communities, understanding trauma, collaboration and relationship building and narrative practice. Ms Bacon’s chapter in the book, Yarning and Listening: yarning and learning through stories, deals with the idea of narrative practice. She said counselling work should draw on Dreamtime and the story-telling practice in Indigenous culture, which is still strong today. Ms Bacon added that having Indigenous lecturers and presenters involved in social programmes and university courses about Aboriginal people was crucial because there is a wide diversity among Indigenous people and cultures. Ms Bacon herself was the first Indigenous lecturer appointed to the School of Social Work and Social Policy at UWA. In 2008, she won the national Neville Bonner Award for Indigenous Education. Along with Joanna Zubrzycki and Bindi Bennett, she was involved in research that won the Norm Smith Publication in Social Work Research Award for 2011.
consist of hundreds to tens of thousands of individuals. They sometimes share their roosts with the grey-headed flying fox, the spectacled flying fox and the little red flying fox. They roost in mangroves, paperbark swamps, patches of rainforest and bamboo forests and very rarely in caves or underneath overhangs. Black flying foxes breed once a year. Mothers give birth to a single young one and carry it for the first month of its life, after which it is left behind in the roost when the mother is out foraging at night. Black flying foxes eat pollen and nectar from native eucalyptus, Lilypillies, paperbark and turpentine trees. When native foods are scarce, particularly during drought, the bats may take introduced or
commercial fruits such as mangos and apples. This species has been known to travel up to 50 kilometres in a single night in search of food. The black flying fox is not listed as threatened on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List. Nevertheless, the species is exposed to several threatening processes, including loss of foraging and roosting habitat, and mass die-offs caused by extreme temperature events. When present in urban environments black flying foxes are sometimes perceived as a nuisance, because the roosting and foraging habits brings the species into conflict with humans Negative public perception of the species has intensified with the discovery of three recently emerged zoonotic viruses that are potentially fatal to humans,
including Australian bat lyssavirus, Hendra virus and Menangle virus. However, only Australian bat lyssavirus is known from two isolated cases to be directly transmissible from bats to humans. Flying foxes often come to the attention of Australian wildlife care and rescue organisations such as when reported as injured, sick, orphaned or abandoned. A very high proportion of adult flying fox injuries are caused by entanglement in barbed wire fences or loose, improperly erected fruit tree netting, both of which can result in very serious injuries and a slow, agonizing death for the animal if not rescued quickly. Never touch or handle an injured bat. Call the wildlife group and a carer, who is vaccinated to deal with bats and will come and take care of it.

The black flying fox, Pteropus alecto, is a megabat in the Pteropodidae family, which includes the largest bats in the world. The Pteropus genus currently has 57 recognised species, 55 of which have some or all of their distribution on islands. The black flying fox has short black hair with a contrasting reddish-brown mantle, an average forearm length of 164 millimetres and a mean weight of 710 grams. It is one of the largest bat species in the world and has a wingspan of more than one metre. Black flying foxes are native to New South Wales, Queensland, the Northern Territory, Western Australia, the Western Province of Papua New Guinea and a number of regions in Indonesia. During the day, individuals reside in large roosts, called colonies or camps, which can

Institute. The homeopathic medicine was given to 2.3 million people. Within a few weeks the number of cases had fallen from the forecast 38 cases per 100,000 per week to 4 cases per 100,000 per week. The 8.8 million people in Cuba’s other provinces did not receive homeopathic treatment and instead suffered the historically forecast incidence of leptospirosis. The effect appeared to last beyond the initial treatment as well. The following year in 2008, there was an 84 per cent reduction in infection in the treated region, with the incidence of infection, for the first time, not correlating with the periods of rainfall. In the same period, incidence in the untreated regions increased by 22 per cent. Australian homeopath Dr Isaac Golden, Ph.D(MA), D.Hom., N.D.,
Contrary to common belief, there is good quality research and evidence supporting the effectiveness of homeopathic medicine. The largest study of homeopathy ever undertaken is based on data from more than 11 million people – the entire population of Cuba. The bacterial infection leptospirosis occurs worldwide, but is most common in the tropics during periods of heavy rain. In late 2007, Cuba faced a developing epidemic of leptospirosis with only enough vaccine to treat 15,000 high-risk people. The Cuban government made the decision in the absence of vaccine to treat the people in the worst affected provinces, excluding those under one year of age, with homeopathic medicine prepared by the Cuban National Vaccine

B.Ec(Hon), was instrumental in this program as he is a world authority on homeoprophylaxis – the use of homoeopathic medicines for disease prevention. Dr Golden began researching homoeoprophylaxis in 2004 after graduating with a PhD from Melbourne’s Swinburne University. This was the first time a mainstream Australian university accepted this kind of topic for orthodox research. There are now 160 randomised clinical trials in homeopathy on 77 medical conditions, with published results in respected scientific journals. Randomised clinical trials are a common method used to test pharmaceutical medicines. Of these RCTs, 41 per cent have a balance of positive evidence, 7 per cent have a balance of negative evidence and 52 per cent have not been conclusively positive or negative.

WA resources sector grows by $12 billion The latter half of 2012 has seen an unprecedented amount of bad publicity surrounding the resource industry in Australia.

By Ryan Crawford, group director, Crawford Property Group However, when one takes a closer look at the state of our country’s largest income stream, the Western Australian economy continues to show signs of strength and growth. Of particular importance was the Deloitte Access Economics investment monitor for the September 2012 quarter, which shows that total planned or existing investment in Western
Australia stands at $281 billion – an increase of $12 billion over the past year. These figures underline the fact that WA’s resources sector is not a boom and bust economy, but rather a growing sector that is often misunderstood. Deloitte director David Rumbens said WA’s economic future based on these investment figures seemed assured for some time to come. “Even with few new approvals, resources projects under way will keep construction activity in the West humming along at heightened levels for several years yet,” he said.

move since 1990. As a direct result of the expansion of Chinese cities, it is predicted that 50,000 skyscrapers of 30 or more stories will be built – the equivalent of two Chicago’s every year during this period. In addition, it’s important to consider the continued industrialisation of India, which has a population of 1.2 billion people. Over the next decade, the demand for steel is expected to soar in India and this will help to underpin the demand for resources such as iron ore. The Western Australian Iron ore region is already beginning to see increasing activity by Indian companies in the resources sector and this trend is set to increase over the coming decade. So remember that the Pilbara Region offers more than just mining opportunities, because the astute property investor also has the chance to take part in what will become the counties greatest resources era experienced to date.
The reality is that short term fluctuations aside, the growing demand for our resources from both China and India will continue to power the WA economy for many decades to come. For example, The World Bank still forecasts that China will overtake the US as the world’s largest economy by 2030 if it maintains an annual growth rate of 8 per cent. While a large amount of the recent negative publicity has focussed on the European economies, it is important to remember that Australia’s economic fortunes are tied to Asia. One simple figure puts this into perspective – by 2025, it is estimated that there will be 221 cities in China with a population of over 1 million, whereas today in the whole of Europe there are just 35 cites with this population. Overall, it is expected that 350 million Chinese will migrate into cities by 2025, with more than 103 million having already made the

This strategy could work well for young professionals and others who have the scope to earn significant incomes in the coming years but want the benefits of property ownership now, according to Smartline Personal Mortgage Advisers. “First home buyers are often stretched in their savings and borrowing capacity, trying to get a foot in the door of the property market while only at the beginning of their lives and careers,” said Smartline Adviser Miriam Castilla. “The reality is, for most first home buyers their first property isn’t their long-term home, but rather a stepping stone. “Some of them aren’t even keen to move out of mum and dad’s house or their current rented property; they simply want to make a start on getting into the property market.” In these situations, purchasing an investment property the first time around, and becoming a renter-investor (someone who rents the property they live in, but has an investment property), could be the solution. For those looking to buy an investment property, when savings are good but borrowing capacity is tight, the first home owner grant is usually not a necessity to make the home purchase a possibility. The allowed borrowing capacity is usually higher for investment than owner occupier purchases, as the lender factors in the benefits of rental income plus tax deductibility of the loan in their calculations. “Most people also don’t realise that by not claiming the first home grant when they buy a property, they’re not forfeiting it all together,” Castilla said.
“If they do not live in the new property for a period of six or more months, they will still qualify for the first home owner grant down the track when they are ready to buy the home they do want to live in. “Therefore, not claiming the grant, at least for now, can be a very smart move for those who want to make that first move into property.
“Then, as the first home buyer advances in their career and has a significant increase in income, their borrowing capacity will also improve greatly, as will the ability to save more for a substantial deposit. “That may then be a good time to tap into the grants on offer.” Source: www.yourinvestmentpropertymag.com.au

The benefits of using a
property manager If you own an investment property and rent it to tenants, you can run this business yourself or hire a property manager to do it.
And that’s how you should regard this situation - it’s running a business. In Western Australia, around 60 per cent of investment properties are professionally managed by a real estate agency and the remaining 40 per cent are self-managed by private owners. The evidence suggests however, that the percentage of properties under professional management is growing. If you work part-time or are retired, have some basic legal competencies and understand the complexities of the Residential Tenancies Act, then managing your own property may work well for you. The problem is that many private owners don’t understand their legal obligations under the RTA and some get into difficulties as a result. Most owners underestimate the amount of time that goes into managing a property, or just how difficult, expensive and unpleasant things can become if a dispute arises. For example, if the tenants default on the rent, abscond or require eviction. This is where a property manager can be invaluable. From the start, a good property manager can arrange the public viewing of the property and then thoroughly check all applications and references from prospective tenants. This includes scanning the National Tenancy Database to see if any applicants have a history of unacceptable behaviour. Once suitable tenants are short-listed by the property manager and then chosen by
you as the owner, the property manager can arrange all the lease documentation, take care of the rent collection, bond lodgement, occasional maintenance, quarterly home inspections and utility expenses, such as water and Council rates. Property managers are also skilled at understanding the market rate for the property and setting the weekly rent accordingly. Many private owners tend to misjudge this or feel uncomfortable about reviewing the rent with renewed leases for existing tenants even though this can be unwise over the long term. The most important role of the property manager is to act as the link between the owner and the tenant in a professional way, so that the owner is not exposed to any situations that might be uncomfortable, while at the same time ensuring that the tenant can also raise issues without having to confront the owner directly. If a situation arises that requires going to court, which sometimes happens, property managers are familiar with the law and can represent you at the hearing. Property managers charge a percentage of the weekly rent as their fee, but this is fully tax deductable as part of your business expenses each financial year. Contact REIWA to find your local property managers or to enquire further about their role in the housing sector. source: www.reiwa.com.au

Garden thieves turn green thumbs blue I’m very sad, angry and disheartened to report that more plants have been stolen from the Karratha Community Garden. This comes after a mango tree was recently stolen before we had a chance to plant it and a scarecrow disappeared only weeks after we set him up in the garden. [Last Saturday, the thieves were at it again as] we arrived at the Karratha Community Garden to find that an orange, lime and rare custard apple tree had been ripped from the ground and stolen along with two plants from near the side of the garden beds. Each plant had been thriving thanks to their well-prepared beds and the tender loving care they were receiving. I understand the children from the out-of-school-care facility next door had been putting in a lot of work helping to water the plants before the reticulation system was installed. I wonder how they might be feeling now?

Levissianos puts spotlight on dangerous intersection During a visit to Karratha, Mining and Pastoral MLC Ken Baston was shown some of the town’s traffic trouble spots by local Liberal candidate George Levissianos. A long-time resident of Karratha, Mr Levissianos was keen to point out the work that needs to be done around Karratha in order for the town to keep pace with growing industry and a burgeoning population. “With new projects on the horizon it is extremely important that we have the right infrastructure and safe roadways to cope with increasing activity,” Mr Levissianos said. “This intersection at Coolawanyah Road and Karratha Road has become a worry. Light vehicles have to contend with more and more double and triple road trains entering the precinct. “The congestion at certain times of the day is unacceptable. A diversion plan is needed, it is simply too dangerous at the moment. “I see this as a low cost initiative that would make life a little more convenient and more importantly, safer for the road users of Karratha.’ Ken Baston MLC said it was valuable to get a locals perspective on the issues facing the community. “George was not going to let me leave Karratha before showing me the changes that are required at the industrial estate,”
Mr Bastan said. “This needs to be brought to the attention of the Department of Transport. “I will be writing to Minister Buswell with the excellent suggestions Mr Levissianos has made.”

Police are calling for witnesses to a road rage incident that started along Dampier Highway near the Airport turnoff and finished on Cinders Road. The two vehicles involved are a blue Subaru Forrester and white utility. The incident happened at about 6.15am on Tuesday December 5. If you witnessed anything out of the ordinary at this time along Dampier Highway between the Bayley Avenue turnoff and Cinders Road please contact Karratha Police on 9143 7200. Karratha Police also want to remind the community to please drive carefully if they are heading
away over Christmas. Driving tired can kill. It is very easy to feel tired while driving and so please remember these tips to help prevent you falling asleep at the wheel. • Make sure you are well rested before starting your trip • Take a break from driving at least every two hours • Don’t drive when you would normally be asleep • Include an overnight stop on long trips • Where possible, plan to share the driving. Fatigue starts affecting your mental state in ways such as feeling in a daze, feeling
hypnotised or even forgetting where you are driving to. If you continue to drive you will start squinting and you will begin to blink considerably slower. If you are still driving at this stage you will notice your head start to nod and you will begin to rub the back of your neck. If you feel any of these effects pull over and have a sleep.
Please drive carefully this Christmas

DJ Nino Brown is Australia’s biggest hip hop and RnB DJ and while no stranger to international concerts and Australia’s biggest dance festivals, he’s back in the Pilbara and says this weekend’s shows will be better than ever. DJ Nino Brown has shared the stage with artists such as Jay-Z, Rihanna, T-Pain and Chris Brown plus toured the country as the official DJ for the world’s biggest urban music festival Supafest. From the beginning of his career, Brown has been committed to becoming a great DJ and after he signed with Universal Music, he created the Blazin Mixtape series which has gone on to become the biggest urban music compilation in the country, with sales in excess of half a million copies. Based in Sydney, Nino Brown has toured through the Pilbara already and said he always has a great time in the region.
“Everyone works hard in those areas and is always super ready to party when they get the time off work,” he said. Nino Brown said the audience can expect music to party to. “Really good RnB and hip hop, a bit of reggae, a bit of dubstep … It’s going to be a musical adventure,” he said. Nino Brown is currently working on his newest album, Blazin 2013, due for release January 2013.

The great
shave off
By Tamara Binamat Tambrey Tavern in Karratha relived many men and pleased many girlfriends last week at the great Movember shave off to commemorate the end of Movember. Movember is an annual charity initiative responsible for the sprouting of moustaches on men’s faces around the world, to raise awareness, support and funding for men’s health issues, specifically prostate cancer and male mental health. Movember is the world’s largest men’s health movement and the largest non-government funder of prostate cancer globally. Tambrey Tavern entertainment manager Aaron Rooney said the event, which featured raffles, fundraising and prizes was extremely successful. “Over $3000 was raised and more than a few blokes relieved of their mo’s,” he said.

Owner Bart Parson said the opening night was a huge success and the crowd was dressed to impress. “Brendon Grylls was amazed at what we had created and personally thanked us for giving something very special to the people of the Pilbara,” said Parsons. “John Chan, CEO of Finbar was equally astounded that something so upper-class had made it to Karratha. “It has been a massive effort by my staff whom I know are already exhausted; I think the adrenalin of being a part of a new venue such as Blanche is what is keeping us all going. “We’d like the people of Karratha to know us all by name in a very short space of time as I feel it is vital to any venue to create a family environment and I know my staff are eager to get to know the people of Karratha.” Parsons says diners can look forward to food being served from 11am with the menu winding down through the afternoon to a tapas selection. A full service will be on offer during lunch and dinner time. After 6pm a strict dress code will be enforced. No work clothes are allowed at all and during the day neat casual dress standards will apply until 6pm when smart dress standards are required.

13.
Inspection by a qualified electrician, at the entrant’s expense, to check the safety of the entrant’s display, is recommended.
14.

A killer spectacle near Barrow Island By Ben Leahy If your own family begins to annoy you this year at your annual Christmas get-together, just remember to spare a thought for the dolphin pictured. Killer Whales or Orcas are from the same family as dolphins, yet North West resident Marcus Radcliffe witnessed this extraordinary scene as a dolphin swam and launched out of the ocean near Barrow Island, off the coast from Onslow, in a desperate bid to save its life. Marcus said the Killer Whales began chasing the dolphin about 10 miles from Barrow Island on December 1. And sadly, the dolphin’s spectacular aerobatics might not have been enough. Marcus watched the chase for about 40 minutes, after which the dolphin was not sighted again. He added that this is the second time he has seen Killer Whales in the North West. The last time was in Shark Bay in 2002, when the Orcas were chasing a whole pod of dolphins.

Karratha kid drafted to AFL team Richmond By Tamara Binamat Michelle and Clayton McIntosh of Karratha couldn’t be more proud of their boy Kamdyn McIntosh, who was selected at number 31 in the Australian Football League’s 2012 national draft by the Richmond Football Club. Michelle McIntosh said the family watched the results live on national television. “We’re really excited and happy for him,” she said. “I think it’s going to be a good challenge for him, it’s something that he’s always really wanted to do.” Kamdyn is proving a freakish, natural talent at Australian Rules because he only took up the game four years ago. Before that, when he was living in Karratha as a child, he didn’t even join a footy club, preferring to play karate and soccer instead.
