POLICE WATCH
Man stabbed at café in domestic By Tamara Binamat A man was stabbed in the chest with a pocketknife in a domestic incident at a café in Wedge Street, Port Hedland last Thursday July 11. Port Hedland Police said the man and woman were reportedly involved in an argument before the 27-year-old woman lunged at the 37-year-old man. The man entered the shop and told the shopkeeper he had been stabbed and to call police. The offender admitted to the shop owner she had indeed wounded the man. Police attended and took statements, but the man refused to assist police or accept any help. While police were talking to the offender the victim walked away and was not located again by police. Although the man did not want to involve police, due to the woman making an admission to a domestic violence situation and the fact there was evidence and a witness, police were required to act anyway. The woman was charged with one count of wounding and was refused bail.

trip home from recreation.
This week’s article is written about driving whilst feeling tired.
One example for this would be returning from holidays.
It is very easy to feel tired when driving and there are a few things you can do to prevent falling asleep while driving.
On your drive home make sure you look out for the signs of fatigue.
• Make sure you are well rested before starting your trip • Take a break from driving at least every two hours • Don’t drive when you would normally be asleep • Include an overnight stop on long trips • Where possible, plan to share the driving Fatigue related crashes are more likely to occur than any other crash on a

Fatigue starts affecting your mental state by means of losing time, feeling in a daze, feeling hypnotised or you could forget where you were driving. The effect of fatigue then moves to your physical state by causing your eyes to feel tired, the feeling of heavy eyelids and rapid blinking. If you continue to drive you will start squinting and you will begin to blink considerably slower. If you are still driving at this stage you will notice your head start to nod and you will begin to rub the back of your neck. If you feel any of these affects pull over and sleep. Please drive carefully. .

Karratha hopes to host future defence base the North West – a Defence Force Posture Review, a Defence Force White Paper and a Senate committee,” Adams said. “They all produced reports that said the same thing – that there needs to be a greater defence presence in the North West of Australia. “We here at the Shire of Roebourne have hosted at least seven or eight delegations from the … army, navy and air force over the last 18 months. “[So we asked], ‘You’ve all been up here and had a look, we’ve been talking about it a long time, when do we start seeing some action?’ “[And] the strong feedback from the Minister for Defence’s office was, ‘Yes we all agree [that there needs to be a stronger military presence in the region] and 2014 is the year for action’. “We saw that as a positive sign.”

a stronger military presence in the region.
The Australian Defence Force is likely to announce a planned increase in its presence in the North West as early as 2014, according to local Shire staff.
The Pilbara’s resources assets account for about one-sixth of the nation’s gross domestic product but some argue that its offshore oil and gas facilities, in particular, are vulnerable to security threats.
Shire of Roebourne chief executive officer Chris Adams said staff from the Minister of Defence’s office had told him during recent meetings in Canberra that “2014 was a year of action” on the issue.
The Shire of Roebourne’s Adams said that while the Minister of Defence’s staff were keen to build the region’s military presence, they didn’t reveal what shape this might take.
“They acknowledged that there had been a lot of talk, that there had been a lot of studies and reports, and they were confident that 2014 would start to see movement in this area,” Adams said.
However, members of a recent senate committee into defence in the North West were keen to see a new naval base established in the region, possibly at Dampier.
The assurance comes as government and business leaders have long called for
“There has now been three fairly substantial reports prepared on defence in

Adams said the Shire is keen to host any future military facility, including a potential new naval base. “We clearly want to be considered highly in the mix, we think it makes sense for them to be here as the largest population centre in the North West,” Adams said. “[But] I’m sure Broome, Port Hedland and Exmouth have very strong reasons why they want them there as well. “Clearly, an increased military presence is first and foremost about economic security for the region. “We’ve got some of the world’s largest projects here and we don’t have a lot of obvious defence presence in the region. “So protecting the economy of Australia and also protecting the global supply chain makes sense to
“But secondly, growing a defence presence [in the Shire of Roebourne] will help grow a whole range of small businesses, help grow our population and help grow services, such as medical and education services.” But while the Shire welcomes any future facilities, it is also keen to see they are well planned. “I see this as almost like another mining boom where traditionally decisions get made in a mining boom and we are left on the back foot because we don’t have enough houses, we don’t have enough infrastructure,” Adams said. “[So] we are trying to keep in contact with the Department of Defence so that if they do decide it is Karratha where they want to be, we are on the front foot and we are ready for them.”

The Tech Pack Project aims to improve community digital literacy by providing computers at no cost to children and their families, who may not otherwise be able to afford them The motivation for the project comes from Australian Bureau of Statistics’ figures that indicate only 47 per cent of financially disadvantaged families have access to a computer at home, compared with 89 per cent in higher income earning groups. “Families can use computers for homework and keeping in touch with family members whilst improving their literacy, they shouldn’t be left behind just because they don’t have access to a computer at home,” Pilbara Team Leader for the Smith Family Daphne Trevurza said. Ashburton Shire holds its first council Carbon ‘tax’ tops meeting following suspension Shire of Ashburton Councillors reconvened for their first Ordinary Meeting on July 17 as they focus on governance training and the responsibilities of a Council following a probity audit and six-month suspension. Local Government Minister Tony Simpson attended the meeting along with a mentoring panel, which has been established to provide support to Council and Shire staff for the next six months. Mr Simpson encouraged the Council to fulfill their roles to the standard expected by local communities. “The past few months have seen many positive changes occur within the Shire of Ashburton,” Mr Simpson said. “We’ve seen training for Councillors and the appointment of a monitoring and mentoring panel.”
Training was conducted through the Australian Institute of Company Directors and the WA Local Government Association. “The training was a great opportunity for Councillors to refocus on the role and structure of local government, meeting processes, land use planning and ethical responsibilities,” Mr Simpson said. The Council was suspended for six months in December 2012 and Commissioner Ronald Yuryevich appointed to run it. Councillors were reinstated on June 12, and a mentoring panel set up to help Council improve its decision-making and meeting processes, provide advice to elected members and senior staff, and monitor Council business. Panel members include Cr Karen Chappel, deputy president of the Local

Liberals and Nationals’ Federal agendas By Ben Leahy Abolishing the carbon “tax” and restarting the cattle live export trade to Indonesia have topped the election promises of the recently selected Liberal and National party candidates for the Federal seat of Durack. Kick starting their election campaigns, The Nationals candidate Shane Vanstyn and Liberal Party candidate Melissa Price both made flying visits to the Pilbara last week. The Liberals’ Price said a focus for her party was immediately removing the mining tax and carbon emission trading scheme as well as cutting red tape regarding environmental approvals for mining projects. “Once we get rid of those things we start to bring down the cost of living ... then we start to get some confidence back in the economy,” Price said. The Nationals’ Vanstyn also targeted the carbon trading scheme. “This is now the second Labor Prime Minister to say that there will be no carbon tax under a government they lead,” Vanstyn said. “[But] ETS is, of course, just another fancy name for a carbon tax … and it is going to hit Durack the hardest when it applies to onroad trucking. “You often hear the call that the carbon tax will only apply to
certain large emitters, well a lot of the goods that come up here are carried by large carriers such as Linfox. “You will also see entities such as Coles and Woolworths, who move their groceries around depots in Perth prior to being transported to places like Karratha, will also be liable to the carbon tax. “And these supermarkets and trucking companies will not absorb the costs, it is instead going to be passed on in the form of high food and goods prices.” Vanstyn also said that only a change of government could restart the live export trade to Indonesia. He said Australians needed to understand that many places in Indonesia lacked refrigeration and so needed live animals to get their access to meat supplies. “It is critical for Australians to understand that the market in Indonesia is not just about reeducating Indonesia or giving it a hard time,” Vanstyn said. “This is a market of a few hundred million people who don’t have access to refrigeration and often access their protein supply through wet butchers.” Both Vanstyn and Price have links to the resources industry with the Nationals’ candidate currently a director of Yamatji Mining and Civil and the Liberals’ nominee a lawyer in the mining and grain sectors.

National mental health chairman visits Hedland By Ben Leahy Professor Allan Fels visited Port Hedland last week to meet with the community and the mining sector in his role as the chair of the National Mental Health Commission. Professor Fels said the aim of the visit was to talk to as many people as possible because the commission relied heavily on personal stories when preparing its reports for the Federal Government. He said individual stories from Pilbara residents could ultimately have a direct impact on the country’s mental health policy. “We are the national body and we do a report on our findings, but we are slightly more story based than other reporters,” professor Fels said.
comes as debate continues into the extent of mental health issues among fly-in, fly-out workers and how to best support this workforce. Speaking before his arrival in the Pilbara last Thursday, Professor Fels said the commission planned to meet with members of the mining industry to hear about the “unique challenges of fly-in, fly-out communities”. But he said the visit was also part of a national alliance between the commission and the Australian business and small business councils to promote mental health issues at work. The alliance’s aim is to get more people with mental health issues into the workforce and to help train business managers in how to deal with people when they have problems at work.
on resources. “Small businesses don’t escape [this issue] because, if one in five Australians have a mental health problem each year, it is going to affect both the small and big businesses,” he said. Professor Fels said the ability of people with mental health issues to gain employment often played a big role in their treatment. “A whole of life approach, including access to accommodation and work without being discriminated against, is bigger than clinical [treatment],” he said. “We see accommodation as a key issue, also. “If people are not happy with their accommodation, it is not easy to treat them for their mental health issues.”

get to know that the individual’s attended,” Rodgers said.
Employer sponsored mental health programs are increasing in the Pilbara, according to local health professional Caroline Rodgers.
She added that mental health issues were not confined to FIFO workers.
With National Mental Health Chairperson professor Fels recently in town to promote mental health awareness, Rodgers from Karratha Psychologists said a number of local businesses were already implementing Employee Assistance Programs. Designed to help employees manage personal problems that might affect their health or workplace performance, EAPs often include subsidised mental health services, such as counselling. “The most common issues we deal with [in the Pilbara] are depression, anxiety and relationship issues followed by workplace problems,” Rodgers said. And a growing number of these appointments are referrals through EAPs “whereby staff come and see us and we bill the company with no cost at all to the employee”. “These sessions are fully confidential, the company doesn’t
“It is irrelevant whether it is FIFO or local, we get a mixed blend of both,” Rodgers said. With Rio Tinto expanding its mining operations near Newman, Karratha Psychologists have also been picking up more work from the East Pilbara town. “We are doing a growing number of site visits and classes,” Rodgers said. She said her team often held workshops, such as managing anxiety and stress in times when construction projects are due to finish. They have also put together toolbox sessions on parenting and managing relationships from a distance and controlling drug and alcohol use. Yet despite an increase in mental health awareness, Rodgers said there was still a need for an increase in services in the Pilbara. People wishing to make an appointment with Karratha Psychologists do not need a GP referral and can get more information by calling 6201 6240.

By Tamara Binamat You might have heard a new voice on the airwaves this week, but the man behind the voice is certainly no stranger to the North West. ABC North West Local Radio has a new station manager and breakfast announcer, and Alex Hyman has plenty of stories to tell. He trekked his way up to Karratha with his wife and baby, but it was not long ago Hyman was a rural reporter in Kununurra for ABC Kimberley. After gallivanting around the East Kimberley, Hyman was back down south as the producer and roving reporter for Perth’s number one breakfast show with Eion Cameron. Not only is Hyman accomplished behind the radio scenes, he’s been on the wireless too with long-running Australian band Red Jezabel, who he assures us is still very much together, although he is now a reverse fly in, fly out drummer. The band was founded 17 years ago and actually performed at a Spinifex Spree Carnival in Port Hedland in 2009. 2013’s Spinifex Spree will be held next weekend, but this time headlined by Perth Band China Doll. More recently, Alex has covered stories from the North West such as the Gascoyne floods and certain cyclones, and looks forward to investigating industries such
as farming and mining. “On the lighter side, [I’m looking forward to] getting out and discovering the people,” Hyman said. “It’s a unique part of the world and I think the people that choose to live here have a different outlook on life and an adventurous spirit.” Alex has only lived in Karratha a short time but has already been out exploring the stories of our community, including joining a kangaroo and damper cook up at a reserve in Roebourne with some Aboriginal elders. “That’s not something you do in Mount Lawley on a mid-week afternoon!” Hyman said. “That was fantastic and they were lovely and those kind of experiences are what I’d love to do on as many occasions as possible. “I’m happy to be here, the family’s happy to be here and we can’t wait to get out and get amongst it all.”

The Great Gatsby follows Fitzgeraldlike, would-be writer Nick Carraway as he leaves the Midwest and comes to New York City in the spring of 1922, an era of loosening morals, glittering jazz and bootleg kings. Chasing his own American Dream, Nick lands next door to a mysterious, party-giving millionaire, Jay Gatsby, and across the bay from his cousin, Daisy, and her philandering, blue-blooded husband, Tom Buchanan. It is thus that Nick is drawn into the captivating world of the super-rich, their illusions, loves and deceits.

Finbar managing director Darren Pateman told the West Australian newspaper that the Karratha market was not conducive to selling Pelago apartments to owner occupiers. “We can’t go into a town like that and ask Mary-Jane or Jim, who plan to be in town only for a few years, to buy a product,” he said. “They are happy to rent and they pay a very high rent but they’re not necessarily happy to buy as an occupier.” Pateman told the newspaper that Finbar looked to first lease
Pelago to tenants for $1,300 a week for one-bedroom and $1,500 per week for two-bedroom apartments. Then once the apartments were leased, the developer could look at selling them to investors. But despite having to act as a landlord in Karratha, revenue from the completed Pelago West apartments were a major contributor to the developer’s record profits expected for fiscal year 2013, according to The Australian. Finbar expects to complete the Pelago East apartment blocks before the end of 2013.

Paraburdoo Milk Bar defies mining slow down
Wanangkura stadium up for architecture award
Despite recent talk of the mining boom being over and upcoming job losses, the 12-year-old Paraburdoo milk bar is one example of a small business still going strong. Here the owner Francis shares some of his tips for running a successful small business. Having a wide variety of delicious food is important, but it is not enough to draw customers these days. What’s more important, in my opinion, is the brand you build with local customers – the feeling they get when they walk into your store. I call it the vibe. If they have a good experience or have heard good things about you, they will come back again and again, and refer you to their friends. We also donate to a lot of the local sporting and community associations and then proudly put the certificates of appreciation up on our walls. That helps generate good will in the community. We’ve also invested considerable time and money into learning about social media, particularly Facebook. The viral capacity of Facebook can really astonish small business owners. One example is the ability to connect directly with those people, who have “liked” your page and inform them of promotions, such as a free coffee offer. We have found that the viral effect of these promotions has meant that three out of four visitors to our store would come in to redeem this free coffee, but then also buy something else. We also listen to the customer and learn what it is that they want. It was my customers, who – with brutal honesty – first asked me if my attached video store was really making money and whether that space would not instead be better used in providing them with a place where they can comfortably eat with family and friends. Thanks to these suggestions, I closed down the video store and also opened up a successful bakery section. My final message to businesses doing it tough is chin up because you are not alone.
• Port Hedland’s Wanangkura Stadium
By Ben Leahy
Port Hedland’s Wanangkura stadium and its blue, cubed construction has been shortlisted for a 2013 World Architecture Festival Award in the Sports Category. Wanangkura will be up against two entries from Australia as well as buildings in Russia, Slovakia, the Philippines and the UK. The 4,500m2 Hedland stadium features a 400-seat indoor stadium with a variety of sporting courts and fields as well as facilities to host cultural events. But in addition to its practicality, the sporting precinct has been acclaimed for its architectural beauty. Its bright blue outer façade is made with a cubed, pixelated technique that contrasts with the Pilbara’s famous orange landscape.
Hopefully there is some useful information in this article that might help you earn an extra dollar.
The name Wanangkura means whirlwind in the local Kariyarra language, a word chosen by the architect to tie in with Port Hedland’s cyclonic weather. Additionally, the buildings insulated walls help reduce energy costs by maintaining steady temperatures. World Architecture Festival Award winners will be announced in Singapore on October 2-4.

Pilbara education needs continued support to counter FIFO culture By James McClements, global private equity fund manager and former Newman Senior High School student
RCF manages more than $3bn on behalf of mostly US institutions – many of whom are education institutions – with instructions to invest in the global mining industry. But while I work as a fund manager now, I come from a working-class family. It is sad with the onset of flyin fly-out workforces to see the deterioration of some communities in regional areas. By way of example, Newman Senior High School had more than 500 students in the late ’70s and the number is now only 229. The fall in student numbers inevitably limits the amount of available resources and the breadth Fully customised Ceremony & Reception of education that can be offered. Conditions apply. Thankfully, there is a renewed focus on improving regional Must book by 31st of August 2013. education opportunities, but this is really only starting to address the neglect of many decades of underwww.broomeweddings.com investment.
Strong encouragement needs to be given to corporations and governments so they sustain this focus even as the rapid growth of the resources industry slows. It is great to see organisations, such as the UWA, and schools, such as Methodist Ladies College, maintain this focus as they provide choices that help students pursue alternative pathways to tertiary education. Aspire UWA, in particular, works with partner schools, such as Newman SHS, to increase participation in higher education. I joined Aspire UWA and the UWA Business School’s Pilbara tour to visit local schools and encourage students to study business and aim for leadership roles in their future careers. As a UWA Business School graduate, I am very aware that our society can only reach its full potential if our government, business and community leaders are drawn
from a wide cross-section of society. I found that my background growing up in mining towns gave me a career advantage because I had credibility when talking to the mining industry. After all, I lived the industry and its many changes and evolutions, and likewise students in regional areas should not underestimate the advantages that their unique perspectives can bring to a career in resources. I always relish the opportunity to speak about my career and those of others I know, who grew up in regional areas and continued on to successful lives. I hope these stories act as encouragement to today’s students. I would also like to thank BHP Billiton for having the foresight in 1980 to develop a program of scholarships in the Pilbara that was a major contributor to my career choices and success.

From creating the first maps and painted depictions of the human face to completing the earliest open sea crossing, Australia’s Indigenous people have accomplished some of the world’s most impressive achievements, according to a new television program. First Footprints screening on the ABC tells the more than 50,000-year history of Indigenous people in Australia using oral histories, art sites never before seen on TV and the latest archaeological discoveries. The epic tale, told in four episodes, spans ice ages when people shared the land with 6m lizards and giant marsupial lions, a period of global warming when 25 per cent of greater Australia receded into the oceans and the agricultural age. First Footprints producers Martin Butler and Bentley Dean said the program relied heavily on rock art sites, such as those in the Pilbara’s Murujuga National Park, to tell the story of Australia’s first people. “For the first time on television the stunning achievements of the nation’s Aboriginal ancestors are brought to life,” the duo said. “The wealth of the rock art in Australia, and the way it can inform our knowledge of the past, is truly breathtaking. “There’s more rock art here than in most of the rest of the world put together.” With First Footprints broadcasting to a national audience, the program has added to long running calls for rock art on the Burrup Peninsula, known to traditional owners as Murujuga, to be World Heritage-listed. University of Western Australia archaeologist and professor Peter Veth, who appears on the ABC program, said the peninsula contains more than a million engravings. “It’s probably the world’s largest rock art province and it has been found to have the values required for world heritage listing,” he said.

Pilbara soldiers conduct marine exercises in Dampier waters By Ben Leahy Karratha’s Pilbara Regiment took to the waters off Dampier last week to put members of its Operational Support Squadron and Regimental Headquarters through three-days of waterborne familiarisation training. With giant iron ore and LNG bulk carriers in the background, the Regimental Headquarters and Operational Support Squadron practised the ability to use zodiac craft to get into positions suitable for conducting reconnaissance and surveillance. Major Damien Casey said the group practiced scenarios in which they would use zodiacs to navigate to a location, such as an island, hide the marine craft and then set up observation posts. “Our job is recon and surveillance – putting in observation posts and reporting back what we see,” Major
Casey said. “We are not designed as a offensive force, [although] we may have to break contact, and obviously we train in that as well.” As full-time soldiers at The Pilbara Regiment, the Regimental Headquarters and Operational Support Squadrons are the teams that can be called into action in short notice situations. Yet patrolling is not their first responsibility. Under normal circumstances, the Regiment’s part-time reserve soldiers do the bulk of the Pilbara’s patrol work with the Operational Support Squadron and the headquarters staff providing logistics, transport, mechanical, medical and administrative support. Yet Major Casey said it was important for the Operations Support Squadron to still be familiar with land and water patrols because

in a rapid response event, the parttime reserve soldiers might not be able to mobilise fast enough to participate. The experience of patrolling also develops the Operational Support and headquarters soldiers understanding of the rigours and needs of the reconnaissance and surveillance patrols so that they can provide the best support possible to them, Major Casey said. “If you have a better understanding of what a patrol is doing and why and how they use the equipment then you can better help them when you are supplying or providing your services to them,” he said. With responsibility for approximately 1.14 million square kilometres or about one-sixth of the Australian land mass, The Pilbara Regiment use land and marine vehicles on their patrols to help cover the vast distances.

Shadowy figures prowl Wickham art workshops By Ben Leahy Junior artists in Wickham, Tom Price and Paraburdoo took part in art workshops over the past two weeks as the region counts down to the Cossack Art Awards beginning this Saturday July 20. Run by Awesome Arts and local shires, the young participants in the workshops worked with visiting artists to explore light and how it can transform the way we see things in our daily lives. Artists Fleur Hockey and Tara Daniel ran the This Little Light program in Wickham and Fleur said the radiant light in the Pilbara was perfect for the workshop’s focus on shadows. “Today, we have been doing shadows, so we’ve done silhouette pictures on the ground and the children have been making shadow puppets – so the light quality in Wickham works really well,” Fleur said. “We are also showing

Army cadets meet for Karratha camp By Ben Leahy Army cadets from Port Hedland and Karratha met in the Pilbara Regiment’s barracks last week to practise army drills, clean rifles, inspect trucks and learn more about life in the military. With between 40 and 50 per cent of current Australian defence personnel having spent time in the cadets during their childhood, the program is an important recruiting ground for the military. However, Major JJ Steensma said that the camps also helped the secondary school-aged cadets to develop important life skills. “The aim of the cadets is to be a
youth development organisation where we give the children skills ranging from communications to inspecting trucks and teaching discipline through things like drills,” Major Steensma said. A particular focus is on developing the ability of the cadets to act as leaders and speak in public. During the camp, they give briefings to officers and are tasked with taking charge of operations, such as marching a patrol or co-ordinating the movement of army supplies. “We are constantly challenging the kids, pushing them a little bit further than they think they can push themselves and watching how they grow and develop into
far better children,” Major Steensma said. Major Steensma said the cadets also hope to help make a difference to the lives of Indigenous kids in Roebourne through partnerships with local non-government organisations and the Roebourne Senior High School. He said an Army Indigenous Battalion based in Darwin was having success recruiting and producing Aboriginal soldiers and officers. And the communication skills learnt in the army are something Major Steensma is passionate about. Now a member of the Army Reserve, he has taken those skills outside of the defence force and is currently studying a Phd in
Law with a view to acting as an arbitrator in international dispute resolution. Port Hedland Year 12 student Yvonne Lamprecht said she has also benefited from her time in the cadets. “I’ve really improved my confidence throughout army cadets,” Yvonne said. “I speak to a lot of people now whereas I used to hide behind everybody.” And as someone who races stock cars on the speedway, Yvonne’s passion has led her to apply to join the Army as a vehicle mechanic once her school studies are completed this year. She hopes her time as an army mechanic not only fast tracks her career but also her times on the racetrack.

Need help with Immigration? Free visa assessment
By Ben Leahy
Many people don’t realize that they have options to stay in Australia – often as a permanent resident.
With 24 species of animals and plants found nowhere else on the planet, Barrow Island, off the Pilbara Coast, is one of Western Australia’s most important wildlife refuges. And while the island can be difficult to visit, now there is a new way to meet many of its unique inhabitants. By clicking on wildlife website Arkive, it is possible to browse videos, photos and written information on more than 140 Barrow Island species. And that is not all, once you’ve met the local inhabitants, you can also look at footage of lions in Africa, wolves in Canada or anacondas in South America – and, like Wikipedia, it’s all free.
Being a migrant myself, I understand the difficulties involved in moving to a new country. I have been living and working in WA as an Australian registered migration agent for over 10 years and have assisted several thousand people to obtain temporary and permanent residence visas. My commitment to you is that I will give you a clear assessment of your visa options and whether you have a good chance of success. If I don’t think your application will succeed I will tell you this up-front. My firm specializes in Permanent Residence visas such as Employer Nomination (186), Regional Sponsored Migration (187), General Skilled (189/190) as well as Temporary work (457) and Partner Visas. Yet despite drilling 900 wells in the area, Chevron says it has preserved all of Barrow’s native species and implemented quarantine controls that have prevented cats, foxes and other invasive species from getting a foothold on the island. Chevron has also partnered with Wildscreen to supply much of the material now on the Arkive website. The company’s environment manager Russell Lagdon has even contributed many of his own photos to the website and said Chevron engaged with a range of organisations to support their conservation programs. “We are committed to safeguarding Barrow Island’s conservation values and have a world-class quarantine management system for the Gorgon project that protects the flora and fauna from introduced competitors and predators,” Lagdon said. Barrow Island has about 400 species of plants, 13 terrestrial native mammal species, 110 bird species, 43 terrestrial reptile species, 1200 species of terrestrial invertebrates and 60 species of subterranean fauna.
Barrow is also one of the few Australian landscapes still free of cattle, sheep, cats and foxes.
Animals of note on the island and in its waters are the Main’s frog, which can sustain itself in a cacoon of water during dry spells, humpback whales, rare flatback turtles and the burrowing bettong that is now only found on a few Australian islands.
In 1967, Chevron began producing oil on Barrow and

Business growth throughout regional and rural centres By Keiran Sullivan, Director, RSM Bird Cameron Small to medium-sized enterprise (SME) owners in regional centres and rural areas are keeping pace with those in capital cities, according to findings from RSM Bird Cameron’s thinkBIG 2013 study. thinkBIG 2013 measures the pulse of the Australian SME sector. It benchmarks business confidence and the attitudes of owners towards planning, growth and profitability, exit planning and superannuation. 308 business owners participated in the 2013 study, providing insights into how Australian SMEs feel about their business. 41 per cent of respondents in regional centres reported revenue growth over the past twelve months, 33 per cent reported no change and 26 per cent reported a decline. 40 per cent of respondents in rural areas reported revenue growth over the past twelve months, 32.5 per cent reported no change and 27.5 per cent reported a decline. This is compared with 44 per cent of respondents in capital cities reporting revenue growth over the past twelve months, 32 per cent reporting no change and 24 per cent reporting a decline. Keiran Sullivan, Director, RSM Bird Cameron, said, “The fact that businesses in regional centres and rural areas are on par for growth with capital
cities is a positive sign for continued progress over the next twelve months.” SME owners in regional centres are most optimistic about growth in the next twelve months (69 per cent), followed by those in capital cities (65 per cent). Owners in rural areas are considerably less positive with 57.5 per cent expecting growth the next year. “SMEs in several industries continue to struggle with the current economic conditions. Those in agriculture, mining and manufacturing in particular see the financial impact from several difficult years. However, thinkBIG 2013 shows that business owners are resilient and looking towards a strong future,” Mr Sullivan said. Business success
planning
key
to
Business planning is a critical ingredient to running a successful business. thinkBIG 2013 results reveal that 68 per cent of SME owners make business planning a priority. 42 per cent of SME owners prepare a business plan annually, 9 per cent prepare one every two years and 6 per cent every three years. 32 per cent of businesses still don’t undertake any business planning. More SME owners in regional centres (73 per cent) and capital cities (72 per cent) undertake formal business planning compared with those in rural areas (56 per cent). That number is on the rise, however, up from 43 per
cent in 2012. Mr Sullivan said, “There needs to be a continued focus on planning for business owners in rural areas to ensure they reach their growth potential. All business owners should consider completing regular business plans that are updated as market and economic conditions change to ensure they have the right strategies in place for success”. Self-managed superannuation funds (SMSFs) are on the rise. SMSFs are increasingly popular with Australian SMEs. thinkBIG 2013 shows that 45 per cent of SME owners currently have a SMSF. This is an increase from 33.5 per cent in 2012. Fewer owners in rural areas (39 per cent) have an SMSF compared with those in regional centres (51 per cent) and capital cities (47 per cent). Mr Sullivan said, “More SME owners are seeing the benefits that come from an SMSF in terms of flexibility and control. This means the number of people that have a SMSF or are considering moving to one is rising. RSM Bird Cameron expects this trend to continue over the next twelve months”. interview By Tamara Binamat Multi-platinum album-sellers Eskimo Joe are returning to the Pilbara as part of their long-awaited Great West Tour. The band is breaking ground in the music industry at the moment, as this tour supports their first independently released album, funded by fans
through a crowd-funding online campaign. Eskimo Joe guitarist, Stuart MacLeod, said the trio were inspired to do a home state tour as it’s been a “long time between drinks” for most of their regional fans. The band formed in 1997 with Kavyan Temperley on bass and vocals, Joel Quatermain on drums and MacLeod on guitar. Eskimo Joe split from record label Warner Music to focus on a new sonic direction with the help of their fan’s input. This tour will support their yet-tobe-released album, their first as an independent band. “We’ve always been given creative freedom but I guess what we weren’t aware of is that subconsciously we were writing music for Eskimo Joe the band, rather than writing music for ourselves,” MacLeod said. “We’ve had success writing a particular style of music so we figured that was the road we needed to take. “I guess this time around we wanted to totally wipe the slate clean and start from scratch and do something that we would

want to listen to. “And as a result this is the best album we’ve ever done. “We’re really excited about it. “I think it’s going to shock a few people and upset a few people because it wasn’t what they were after but I think in the long run it’s going to make a lot more fans.” MacLeod describes the new album as very scarce on guitars, but features a few acoustic tracks. He said the majority of instruments on the album include old analogue synthesizers and live drums mixed with electro drums. “It’s a lot more groove-based - so drums and bass, [with] a bit more of the head-bobbing and the dancing going on,” MacLeod said. “It’s a bit more of a fun time party album really, but there’s still enough dark angst in there for our old listeners.” The band has been comparing the album to influences from Dusty Springfield to Kanye West and McLeod said they group cant wait for the fan’s reaction.
The Great West Tour audience will be treated to the full band showcasing all the classics and maybe even a few new ones. MacLeod hinted it could be possible those at the Pilbara concerts will be the first to hear their new tracks live as they are on the record. “We’re really looking forward to getting up there,” MacLeod said. “It’s been a long time since we’ve been up your way and you all work pretty hard up there so hopefully [you] can unwind and have a good night.”

The unpleasant pounding and throbbing sensation of a headache is familiar to all, in fact, headaches are the most common ailment worldwide, but I’ll say it again: common does not mean normal. We should not headaches, especially regular basis.
suffer on a
There are 31 different kinds of headaches, ranging from the mildly disruptive to the extremely debilitating in the form of a migraine. There can be numerous reasons why they strike, such as blood sugar irregularities, eye-strain, neck tension, over exertion, dehydration and dietary deficiency.
In the case of the migraine, there is a strong genetic link in which 90 per cent of sufferers have a close relative that also suffers the condition. Common treatment for headaches and migraines are over the counter painkillers, which offer a fast and effective pain relief. But this relief comes with a catch – overuse can lead to users suffering rebound headaches caused by too much medication, which leads to a perpetuating cycle in which they in turn take even more and stronger painkillers. Here are my top tips for addressing the root cause of a headache: Address stress - The most common cause of a headache is tension. Start and finish the day with a relaxing ritual, take regular breaks from your task during the day and always breathe deeply where your breath forces your belly to extend. • Correct dehydration - It is essential to drink around two litres of water a day and more with exercise. Tea and coffee are diuretic beverages,
meaning they dehydrate you, so you may need to cut these back and also ensure extra water is consumed following drinking either of these. • Check your posture - Many jobs are relatively sedentary, meaning you are either at a desk or in a static position most of the day, possibly causing your muscles to tense. Every hour on the hour take a quick scan of your body. Are you hunched over? Are your shoulders tight and around your ears? You may need to do some quick neck stretches to release. • Eat regularly - Skipping meals or leaving too long between meals causes your blood sugar levels to dip, which may result in a headache. Starting off the day on the right foot is most important so make sure a wholesome breakfast is on the menu. Eggs on wholegrain toast with avocado, or an oat and nut based breakfast are good options to regulate blood sugar levels. • Mighty magnesium Magnesium is our relaxing mineral and it eases muscles
after contractions as well as mental tension. If you suffer other symptoms, such as cramps, muscle twitches or spasms, jaw clenching, anxiety or tooth grinding alongside your headaches or migraines, you may have a deficiency. Supplementation may be needed, always seek advice.

Indamani takes the feature race at Roebourne’s Ladies Day
By Nigel Weston Quality stayer Indamani produced a stunning all the way victory in the $20,000 Woodside-Pilbara Handicap feature race at the North West Jockey Club’s Ladies Day at Roebourne last Saturday. Sent straight to the lead by apprentice Shelby Bowtell the Anne King trained stayer ran most of his rivals off their feet and looked set for an easy win in the 1800m event. However, last years Roebourne Cup winner Greatwall Of China emerged out of the pack and charged home in the final 100m. Both horses hit the line almost locked together and only a nose separated them with Indamani just hanging on. Both horses are set to renew their rivalry on Roebourne Cup day and you can be sure they’ll both be trained to the minute to achieve victory on July 27. Victory in the feature race capped
off Bowtell’s biggest day yet as an apprentice when she won earlier on Grey Jabiru in the $20,000 Shire of Roebourne Harding Cup (1400m). Grey Jabiru had the best start and led early until Stripped Bear kicked up on the inside to challenge for the lead. Normally in The Harding Cup, a few challenges came from behind, but Grey Jabiru was able to respond to Stripped Bear and hoof away for a comfortable win over eventual second place getter Northern Comfort. Exmouth trainer Peter Dellar maintained his excellent strike rate at Roebourne as he trained two winners and both won in very impressive style. Another Bell produced one of the easiest wins seen in years by taking out the $8,000 Hahn Electrical Maiden (1400m). Having jumped straight to the front, the three-year-old was never going to lose and ran away to win by almost nine lengths.
Incoherent made it two wins in a row at Roebourne by winning the $12,000 Chameleon Ladies Bracelet (1200m). Jockey Noel Rudland judged the race well as he let Gotabay, Sneaky and Well Adjusted zoom away into the lead. Incoherent travelled well in about fifth place and then went around the field that was four-wide and kicked away for an easy win, although Murphy’s Red Boy was charging home late into second place. Roebourne trainer, Martin Hughes got a well deserved winner with Unctuous taking out the Pilbara Access Handicap, The win also gave veteran jockey, Trevor Davis his first winner at a TAB Meeting after more than 20 years away from the saddle. An excellent crowd attended the Ladies Day meeting and a good crowd is also likely for Port Hedland’s Ladies Day meeting this Sunday.
Gymnasts in a spin for North West champs “With the addition of a sprung gymnastics floor, this venue has potential to hold large, high quality gymnastics competitions,” Matt said. As well as Matt, top Perth gymnast Jacob Westley travelled up for the event and performed a number of exhibition routines at the event. Jacob started out with the Karratha Gynastics Club and has since gone on to become a level seven open gymnast competing in Perth. He also competed at the Australian Gymnastics championships beginning July 13.
• Eight year olds Indyana Lloyd (left) and Nikita Smith with their trophies
North West gymnasts were amazed at the talent he showed during his routine and many were inspired to try and follow on in his footsteps. More than 150 young gymnasts from Exmouth, Gascoyne, Karratha, Hedland, Pearl Coast and Kununurra have taken part in the North West championships held at Karratha’s Leisureplex earlier this month. And with a record number of competitors and stunning new facilities at the Karratha Leisureplex, it was a fitting way to mark the twentieth anniversary of the North West Regional Gymnastics Association event. The competitors also seemed to sense the occasion as they produced a series of stunning routines with visiting WA State team coach Matt Lean saying that the North West gymnasts seem to be improving each year. “It has been a great weekend and the coaches and athletes performed brilliantly,” Matt said.
Sadly, Rose Clark also stepped down as chairperson of the NWRGA after the championships. Rose has been the driving force for the association and for many years she held it together when numbers were low. Now that a full committee has been established for the NWRGA, Rose has the chance to take a well earned break and she will be sorely missed for all the time, effort and commitment she has given to gymnastics in the region. The NWRGA would also like to thank Healthways, Go for 2 and 5, the Department of Sport and Recreation and BHP Billiton Iron Ore for their support. In addition, special thanks goes to Perth officials James Keatley, Matt Lean, Colleen Ballantyne, Tracy Holmes, Jo Bulsing and Sharron Isard for judging the event.

He was also impressed with the Leisureplex facilities and said that it felt like “walking into a National Club’s competition”.
In addition to the championships, many parents and children delayed their journeys home to attend a skills clinic held on the following Monday.

Karratha’s Clay brothers star in desert endurance race By Jamie Nicolaou
the race. Sunday saw Grabham continue his solid form from Saturday, as he increased his overall lead by another 4mins.
Karratha brothers Adam and Luke Clay have continued their solid form in the WA Desert Racing Tri-Series by finishing second and sixth outright, respectively, at the Indee 500 Desert Race held last weekend at Indee Station near Port Hedland.
However, the duel of the day was between Karratha’s Adam Clay and Matt Fish. Fish put the pressure on Clay early, but Clay held his own against the factory KTM rider, maintaining a consistent pace throughout the remaining 250kms to take second place outright.
After starting off with a fifth placing in the shorter prologue stage, Adam made up time on the first day to finish in second outright behind KTM factory rider Ben Grabham.
Luke Clay also performed well to make up the time on Coby Willis to jump up one spot into the sixth position.
Grabham’s KTM teammate Matt Fish was next home in third place, while Karratha’s Luke Clay finished in seventh, 2mins40secs behind Darwin’s Coby Willis.
The third round of the Tri-Series moves to Kumarina Station, 160 km south of Newman from August 9-11.
Unfortunately, the day held bad luck in store for Karratha’s other hopes Jake Watling and Brodie Black.
With Grabham taking a strong lead into the final round, and any of the top ten riders capable of winning, it’s going to be an exciting finish to the country’s newest and only desert racing series.
Watling had drama with fencing wire in his rear wheel, and then missed a turn and got lost. He eventually ran out of fuel about 1km from the finish.
It could also be Grabham’s biggest racing pay cheque, because, having won the first two races, he stands to win a $20,000 bonus if he can also claim victory in the third event.
Black, after posting the second fastest prologue time, just 2secs behind Grabham, got a rear flat on the first lap, putting him out of

New volleyball season set to kick off at Leisureplex By Bruce Simpson Volleyball players will have to dig out their runners this week as the local league holds registration nights at the Karratha Leisureplex on July 24 and 30. Players attending the nights will have the chance to take part in social scratch matches and join the North West Volleyball Association’s A and B-Grade competitions. The A-Grade games are for players looking for fast-paced, skillful contests, while those keen for a more social outing can join a B-Grade team made up of a mix of guys and girls.
And, this season, it is not just the players, who will be providing the highlights as NWVA games now move to the recently opened $64m Leisureplex sporting facility. NWVA members already had the chance to try out the Leisureplex courts when they played a series of social matches at the sporting complex during its opening weekend earlier this month. Arriving at 9am on the opening Saturday, the NVWA crew took advantage of the morning sun to play four and two a side matches on the new beach volleyball courts.
With a strong wind blowing, it made for some entertaining rallies as the teams put on a show for the crowd that quickly gathered. And with many passersby expressing an interest in beach volleyball, the NWVA is hoping to shortly make some exciting announcements regarding future competitions – stay tuned. In the afternoon, the NWVA crew then moved from the beach courts to the indoor stadium for two hours of exhibition games on the brilliant new hard courts. The players again showed off their skills
with great games featuring big spikes as they quickly adapted to the solid floor. The NWVA would like to thank John Sewell from Volleyball WA for coming up and assisting on the day and also to those who filled out registration and interest forms on the day. The upcoming NWVA registration nights kick off at 7pm on July 24 and 30. For more information contact NWVA president Bruce Simpson on 0439070805 or drop down on the night. Don’t forget to stay tuned for more beach volleyball news.

By Sara McRobb Three Karratha BMX club riders will next weekend compete against the globe’s best riders as they head to Auckland for the BMX World Titles on July 25. Corey Davis, Macie and Dylan Bennetts will all compete in their age classes at the World’s, while Macie and Dylan will also take part in the cruiser class. To help them prepare for the mental and physical challenge of the World Titles in which there will be as many as 580 riders from Australia – not to mention those coming from elsewhere - competing, the trio spent extra time with former Olympian Luke Madill. Luke was also in town to run a fourday camp for the rest of the Karratha BMX Club riders – and the day was a big success with 45 BMXers taking part. The junior sprocket rockets had an awesome time with Luke, who taught them to balance at the starting gate with putting their feet down and to tackle the course with more confidence.
The intermediate riders trained for two hours on each of the four days and went through a range of racing, jumping, cornering and sprinting. These riders challenged themselves with many executing big jumps and manuals by the end of the training. The senior group trained for four hours a day, with the focus being on racing and recovery. These riders were jumping, manualling and trying different race lines on the track. They were also put through their paces with sprint sessions, a core challenge along with technique, jumping and a finishing time trial.
Each of the training sessions concluded with healthy snacks and at the end of the four days a BBQ and presentation were held. Luke spoke to parents and riders and hailed Karratha’s BMX track as the best in Australia, especially because locals regularly tried to change it up every few years to keep challenging the cyclists. Due to the track and the quality coaching structure within the club, Karratha’s riders and coaching staff have continually improved with help from club partner RioTinto. Here’s hoping Corey, Macie and Dylan keep improving all the way to claiming the world title in their division.

BMX riders contest first round of North West championships By Sara McRobb
women’s from Kalgoorlie rider Laura McLerie.
Cold and windy conditions did not deter 150 BMX riders from Karratha, Hedland, Newman, Kalgoorlie and Perth from heading to Tom Price for the first round of the North West championships recently.
With Khalan Young, a current Olympic rider, elite riders Jamie Lewis, Jeremy McLerie, and world plate holder Laura McLerie all riding in the event, it was great to see local rider Corey Davis take a couple of wins against such top competition.
The Friday night pre-event spin on the Tom Price track gave riders a taste of the weather conditions and subsequently led many to head to the clothing store to purchase more layers prior to the Saturday night’s racing.
It was great racing throughout the championship and there were many riders, who competed for the first time and enjoyed the experience of riding on a different track and the format of more formalised racing.
Toby Muller and Paul Kerrison, took on the challenge of racing three classes, which was a total of 15 races for the event and both rode well in these events.
This first round of the championships also saw the introduction of strider bikes as four riders participated in the class.
Rodney Gethin proved that age was no barrier when competing in the 18+ men’s as he beat Mason Hayes to take the win. Due to his event being cancelled, Jeremy McLerie won the 14+ pro open men from Corey Davies based on points. Cat Hopkins took out the ladies pro pen
Strider bikes are for juniors and help to teach them balance while riding on a BMX track with the four riders competing in the class at the North West championships all aged under fiveyears-old. Round 2 of the championships will be held in Hedland in late August with Karratha to host the final event of the series in September.

The school holidays have been brilliant so far for visitors and those on holidays. Anglers have been in to the shop reporting some exciting catches, although some of the winter regulars have been reporting that it has been quiet for them. One lucky guy from the UK cast his line in the water on the outside wall next to the EGFC clubhouse with a prawn head after he had eaten lunch at Nemo’s. On his first cast he caught a goatfish that was big enough to eat, but was still nowhere near as big as his eyes and the smile on his face! These fish are easily recognised by their two barbells (whisker like feelers) that protrude from their lower jaw. They can also be called red mullet, and while they may not be as tasty as a coral trout or bluebone, they are especially tasty when it is your first cast in a new area and a new country. The goatfish is given a three star rating in the fish ID book, and we are sure the visitor would have enjoyed it immensely knowing it was fresh and caught with such joy. The EGFC held crab races again last Sunday and many children and adults came down for the fun times. Cheryl Tunstall’s crab was the final winner of the races, but I think everyone there was a winner with a gorgeous sunset, warm calm weather and the great Sunday roast. The EGFC is a not-for-profit organisation and sporting group that holds regular events for members and visitors to enjoy fishing, diving, crabbing and getting outdoors on the water. They hold regular clinics and members are very happy to assist new anglers with any queries regarding fishing. Di and Neville Norkett from Perth are in Exmouth at present and went out on Sunday with captiain Josh Bruynzeel on board On Strike. Di is pictured this week with one of the great catches of the trip. It is a gold band job fish, but they also caught scarlet sea perch, pearl perch, long tail tuna, Spanish mackerel and red emperor! There certainly doesn’t seem to be a lack of species about at the moment. Peter Sweeny was also up from Dunsborough during the holidays and thoroughly enjoyed walking the beaches at the tip of the cape with various lures. He caught some queenfish, trevally and snapper, but he also tried soaking some prawns around the middle of the day and landed quite a few bluebone, one of which he kept to take home and eat.
