Burglary spike prompts police warning against complacency 2014 JANUARY
S E I T I V I T C A Y A HOLID ED 6-12 YEARS FOR CHILDREN AG ERY WEEK DAY EV M FROM 1PM TO 5P
By Tamara Binamat As the year winds up and the community’s thoughts turn to holidays and sleep-ins, local police are warning against complacency with home security. Acting Senior Sergeant Matt Hartfield said a staggering 70 to 90 per cent of home and car burglaries are opportunistic, meaning the resident has not locked up. And burglaries have increased this festive season from last year. “Entry to houses via unlocked doors and windows and cars that are left unlocked then stolen are opportunistic crimes,” acting Snr Sgt Hartfield said. “Unfortunately the numbers have increased from last year, but having said that, it’s still something that could be under control with a bit of community education. “When you get out of your car lock it up, when you go inside don’t leave the front door open. It’s simple things that would make a big difference.” He added that eliminating the opportunistic crime would change burglary statistics dramatically.
“There’s only a small amount [of burglars] that are forcing their way in,” he explained. “Usually if it’s locked they’ll move on because unfortunately in Karratha the people that are doing the wrong thing know they’ll eventually find a car that’s open or a house that’s unlocked.” Acting Snr Sgt Hartfield said those who remain in the Pilbara during the festive season are urged to remain vigilant. “If something doesn’t look right, it usually isn’t right, so give us a call at Karratha Police Station,” he said. The advice follows an attempted bag snatch last weekend when a 23-year-old woman from Karratha was walking on Gawthorne Rd in Karratha. After a struggle, the offender fell to the ground before fleeing. The woman notified a friend who then phoned police. Police are calling for any witnesses to step forward. If you are the victim of a burglary, contact Karratha Police Station on 91437200 immediately and avoid touching anything at the scene before police arrive.

Local trainees prove they have the skills By Tamara Binamat One of the biggest and most prestigious skill and trade competitions has recognised 180 workers in Western Australia, with three of Karratha’s best young apprentices and trainees taking home two golds and one bronze medal. The award ceremony on December 9 followed a gruelling eight-hour competition at the Pilbara Institute on September 25 for mechanical fitting apprentices. The students spent the competition completing a series of projects that showcased their skills and knowledge. Judges supervised the students while they worked on the same project as competitors around the nation, all hoping to go through to the national heat. Matthew Smith won a gold medal and Dylan Whittles won a bronze medal in the Fitting category while Ebony Couzens won gold in the Business Services category. Eligible medallists will now have the chance to represent Western Australia in the national competition in September as members of the Team WA training squad. This event will be held in Perth for the first time since 1989. Department of Training and Workforce Development director general Ruth Shean said Monday’s ceremony was the culmination of competitions held in regional and metropolitan areas over the past six months. “These events aim to challenge young people to achieve their best in their respective trade and skill areas,” Dr Shean said.
Karratha apprentices and trainees did us proud at the WorldSkills Australia contest, with three bringing home medals. Photo by Tamara Binamat “This not only helps to raise the standard of competition across all categories, but it also allows young people to fine-tune their skills, which they can then apply in their workplace. “Initiatives such as WorldSkills also help to raise the profile of the training sector and promote what can be accomplished through a vocational education and training (VET) pathway.” More than 500 young people took part in the WA events, competing in 30
open and VET in Schools categories. The categories ranged from traditional trades, such as bricklaying and hairdressing, to contemporary professions, including web design, business services and electrotechnology. Dr Shean said attention would now turn to Perth, as the city prepared to host the 2014 WorldSkills Australia National Competition. “This will attract a significant number of visitors to Perth, including more than
500 participants, and will showcase WA’s world-class training system,” she said. “Participants will test their skills against some of Australia’s most talented students, trainees and apprentices, vying for a place in the Skillaroos team to take part in the 43rd WorldSkills International Competition in Brazil in 2015.” Peter Phipps, chair of the North West regional committee for WorldSkills Australia, said he hoped the WorldSkills competition would expand in the Pilbara.
EAST PILBARA SHIRE UPDATE Welcome to the heart of the Pilbara
K4
President’s Message Thank you for taking the time to read the latest news from the Shire of East Pilbara. It’s been another wonderful year for the Shire and we’ve achieved many milestones that we set out to accomplish this year. The year also saw the Shire of East Pilbara continuing its commitment to providing quality community facilities to its residents with the completion of the sporting ovals lighting upgrade in Newman. We are the first local government to have adopted such an advanced lighting system, which can be controlled using a mobile phone. Another major milestone of the past year was the introduction of paid parking at all Short Term and Long Term car parks at the Newman Airport which began in February. The implementation of controlled parking was necessitated by the increasing demand for short and long term parking at Newman Airport, and the associated high cost involved in establishing and maintaining such facilities. We also renamed a landmark in Nullagine this year. Nullagine Lookout was officially changed to Lynas Lookout – honouring Nullagine resident William Lynas who is recognised as one of Australia’s most important fighting leaders of World War One. This year saw Councillor Lang Coppin awarded the member of Australia Medal for his services to the East Pilbara. Cr Coppin has committed himself to his local government since 1977. He is the Shire of East Pilbara’s longest serving member having served Council for 33 years continuously (with the exception of a one year absence in 1985). We move forward in 2014 with our focus on the continuing growth of Newman and taking a measured and long-term approach to intelligent and sustainable planning of Marble Bar and Nullagine. I wish you and your family a safe and wonderful Christmas and New Year. Lynne Craigie – Shire President

CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS: 2 (G, Family, Animated, Comedy)
Laughs lead to expansion at Pilbara engineering firm By Ben Leahy For Pilbara residents Bernie Pfoeffer, Harley Spencer and Cory Byers, there has been a simple reason their start-up engineering company KBSS has had success in its first year – their employees have fun at work.
A N IN VA OW NE ILA W BL M E AN !
Having founded KBSS last December, the business has grown from five employees in March to 46 today, at a time when economic pressures have most Pilbara companies in a hiring freeze. Mr Pfoeffer said the rapid expansion has been possible because contractors at Rio Tinto’s Cape Lambert site have noticed how well KBSS staff work. He said the key has been to hire Pilbara residents recommended by existing KBSS staff, including, most recently, a batch of seven unskilled men from Roebourne. KBSS employees simply need to be ready to “have a laugh and have a go”, Mr Pfoeffer said. “It means that our guys want to be at work, they come in early, they are a bunch of mates, they share a laugh and a beer and hence we get good work out of them,” he said. And while maintaining a happy workforce might sound like business management 101, Mr Pfoeffer said it is more rare than it should be in a resources industry still heavily reliant on fly-in, fly-out workers. Part of the reason the three partners started KBSS is because they were sick of working with guys who didn’t want to be in Karratha “There were so many mopey guys ... moaning about Karratha and its heat,” Mr Pfoeffer said. Ray Congerton from construction group John Holland said contractors
had been taking notice of the good work ethic of KBSS employees. Mr Congerton has been using a team of eight to 12 KBSS workers to help build the conveyor systems on the new wharf at Rio Tinto’s Cape Lambert iron ore port. “Their mechanical experience and expertise in aligning conveyors and drive motors has come to the forefront,” Mr Congerton said. “But even if it is some other work, they are very keen to get into it and get it done. “[KBSS’s] guys are all handpicked for that reason, for their character in how they work. “Their effort has been very well noted around site, they get on well with our guys.” Contractor Laing O’Rourke has also taken notice of the KBSS teams and is now subcontracting Cape Lambert work to them as well. But with investment having slowed in the resources industry, the next challenge for Mr Pfoeffer and his partners is to find contracts outside Cape Lambert, particularly long-term operational contracts rather than construction projects. Mr Pfoeffer said KBSS already had employees working at Dampier Port and the Macedon gas project near Onslow and is exploring work options in Queensland. And with Mr Pfoeffer and his partner Yarianny Chinchilla speaking Spanish, KBSS are also hoping to pick up work in Peru. In the meantime, Roebourne man John Shaw has joined KBSS from Woodside to help mentor the new indigenous trainee tradies. “The boys want to learn, so it is good passing on my experience and knowledge of the construction industry to them,” Mr Shaw said.

Rather than plan a relaxing jaunt to London or Bali, Julia will instead fly to the Philippines next March. There she will join a group trekking a 2500m volcano and visiting Philippine women who wish to start their own small businesses with the help of microfinance loans from non-government group Good Return. To take part in the trip, Julia needs to pay for her own travel costs in addition to raising $4000 for Good Return – a target she has already passed, having collected more than $5000 after months of fundraising in Karratha. Julia said every time $4000 is raised by volunteers like her it enables Good Return to provide business training to about 50 Philippine women. “I wanted to find a way to support women and organisations that empower women in other countries,” Julia said. “And Good Return enables a relatively small amount of money for an Australian to make such a big difference to a woman in another country, who, like me, is a mother just trying to do the best in life she can.” As a former member of the Royal Australian Navy, it was the
economics behind Good Return that appealed to Julia’s “mathematical nature”. According to Good Return, the group lends microfinance loans to women because it has a flow-on effect to the community. Good Return said studies have shown that when women take up a microfinance loan and, for instance, start a small shop, they spend the income from their new business on meeting their family’s needs first. This directly benefits five people, with Philippine families having an average of five members in the areas where Good Return works. The non-profit group also said 99.99 per cent of women repay their loans, allowing Good Return to use the same money to put another woman through a financial literacy program to teach her how to budget and seize on new opportunities. For Julia, however, the trip has quickly grown to be about more than mathematical impacts – it has also helped her connect more deeply with her own community here in Karratha. She has met more people than ever due to her fundraising car washes, raffles and market stalls and attracted support from multiple businesses. One example is that the girls at Soul Café now donate their tips to Julia’s trip. “Before I started I never thought I had the capacity to raise money like this,” Julia said. “It was a bit like throwing a snowball down a mountain and it kept growing and growing and it is still going, so that I am not in control anymore and everyone wants to add to it and help.” One person especially keen to pitch in and help is Julia’s sevenyear-old daughter Nicola, who raised more than $300 through the sale of toys, including her old Barbie dolls. “She was pretty chuffed that she was able to raise all that money and make her mark,” Julia said. “And probably I would like to do a trip like this again with her when she gets older because she has been so involved already.” Julia is holding a fundraising market from 9am this Sunday, December 15, at Mystical Avalon Alchemy on Hedland Place, Karratha. Visit goodreturn.org.au or go to Julia’s fundraising page grphilippineschallenge2014.gofund raise.com.au/page/GarlandJ for more information.

Cambodia calling for philanthropists By Ben Leahy It is one thing to tip a few gold coins into a tin to help fight distant poverty, it is another to use your retirement money to move overseas and personally tackle the problem. Yet that is what Karratha couple Glenn and Tracie Jennings will be doing next year when they move to Cambodia to teach English and business classes for free. The couple last week sold the bulk of their belongings, while Glenn also took a redundancy payment from Karratha’s Pilbara Institute after 20 years teaching IT subjects at the TAFE. He said they would now use their savings to try to make a difference in Cambodia. “We are very aware that we have a privileged life in Australia and that we are in a position to share some of the benefits of that with people that haven’t been that fortunate,” Glenn said. The couple have chosen to live and work in Cambodia because the country is still recovering from its recent history with the Vietnam War and the Khmer Rouge regime. “Cambodia is different because they are not sitting around feeling sorry for themselves,” Glenn said. “They happily make the best of what they’ve got and they don’t want people to come in and give them hand outs. “But they do want people to come work alongside them to help get the country moving forward.” Glenn and Tracie plan to begin their trip by learning more about Cambodia. “Our first six months there we are going to be students ourselves, and we are going to learn the [Khmer] language and the culture,” Glenn said. “I have finished my Masters of Education with a focus on language and the intent is for me to teach English and for Tracie [who has diploma qualifications] to teach business skills in a voluntary capacity. “I will teach in the private university sector for a small number of hours a week to pay the bills, but the rest of the time we are committing to providing free education.” When they first start teaching, Glenn and Tracie will work with a non-profit group called New Life Fellowship.

WINDIWINDI TENDER BEEF “They are a religious organisation but their focus is purely humanitarian,” he said. “They have already established free English classes and free university preparation classes, which help country kids in Cambodia complete the education they need to be admitted into university. “We will work alongside them when we get there, but after that there is every chance we will be teaching independently under our own banner.” Glenn said both he and Tracie were attracted to Cambodia because the people are warm and hospitable, but there are dangers as well. “When we were there in September, there was rioting and the government was using riot police and the military and machine guns and tear gas to put the riots down and we were sort of in the middle of that,” Glenn said. “It is also a big challenge for me, I’ve worked in TAFE for more than 20 years and so making the decision to step away from a fortnightly pay packet after that long is a challenge.” But despite the nerves at the upcoming move, the couple expect to enjoy themselves – when they get some free time, that is. “In one respect it is semi retirement for me, but on the other hand we are probably going to be busier than we ever have been,” Glenn said.

Where has 2013 gone? It feels like just last month we were taking down the Christmas tree and now here it is again standing loud and proud in the loungeroom. The word on the street is that everyone is feeling the pressure of end-of-year deadlines and commitments.
Free Weekly 14-15 December 2013
This comes on top of our normal busy social and work lives, and you have to ask yourself, “When do I honestly just stop and do nothing?” This kind of mental and physical strain takes a huge toll on your health and it is showing in the community, with many illnesses flying around at the moment.
Stress is very depleting and can leave you zapped of vitality, moody, lacking in sleep, down on motivation for your fitness and nutrition and even depressed or anxious. It is important to acknowledge how your environment and lifestyle impacts on your health, and then find ways to
get every aspect of your life to work in harmony. If you are lucky enough to get some time off over the break, I encourage you set aside some time to thank your mind and body for all it has done over the year, and get it ready for 2014. Think of it as a mini health retreat!
Here are some tips on How to do it: Don’t over indulge Yes, Christmas and New Year’s Eve are special occasions where general rules of discipline are allowed to be relaxed – within reason. But this doesn’t mean the other 10 or so days need to be completely debauched as well. Allow yourself the special occasions, and then get back on track with healthy daily habits the following morning. technology ban Emails, text messages, Facebook and other social media are huge time wasters and also apply subconscious pressures. For instance, have you ever noticed how your heart rate slightly increases as you enter your password in anticipation of the messages waiting for you? Even if it’s just for three days, avoid using any of these avenues for communication and see how much more you get done. Don’t worry, the world will continue without your status updates! eat fresh Construct your meals with fresh fruit or vegetables being the largest portion on the plate.
These foods are energising and also nutrient-dense, flooding your body with precious vitamins, minerals and antioxidants to help your body repair and revitalise. Maybe you could spend the break researching new ways to improve your fruit and vegetable intake as well as any other dietary boosters you have been curious about. Gentle exercise If stress was a biggie for you in 2013, then you are going to benefit from gentle exercise rather than high-intensity workouts. The same stress hormones are released during high intensity workouts that are released during our body’s fightor-flight response, so opt for activities that encourage you to breathe deeply and naturally, giving a sense of calm. Yoga, tai chi, pilates, swimming and walking are all good choices. Plan 2014 Sit down with your diary or 2014 wall planner and plot out your year. Block out special dates or occasions well in advance and make a promise to yourself not to commit to anything during those times.
No one else is going to look after your wellbeing as well as you can, so it is up to you to hold that as a priority!

Nearly 3000 members of the Rio Tinto family celebrated 2013 in style when the mining giant hosted its annual Christmas parties recently.
Around 1800 people attended the event at Dampier on Friday, November 29, and 1000 graced Wickham on Saturday, November 30. The windy weather didn’t stop Santa from taking time out of his busy schedule to fly in for a visit via helicopter. Mrs Claus, a taller-than-average elf and a Christmas angel also joined in the festivities. The crowd enjoyed live music, games and competitions, circus performers, amusements, great food, face painting and show bags. Rio Tinto general managers Zara Fisher and Marnie Finlayson thanked all employees and their families for their work and support during the year.

Toys and tuition fees help Smith family celebrate
By Ben Leahy The Smith Family has this month been bringing Christmas cheer and life-changing help to Pilbara families in need. Through its annual Toy and Book Appeal, the charity group last week distributed Nerf guns, Scrabble board games and more than 100 toys and books to Karratha families. The presents have been a bright spark at a difficult time for new residents Christine Smith and her daughter Charlie CreusotSmith. Christine recently quit her job in Perth and moved to Karratha with Charlie to become a full-time carer for her ill ex-husband. Since then, Christine has been receiving financial help from The Smith Family to pay for Charlie’s uniforms, schoolbooks and the tuition fees of a teaching assistant. After struggling with learning difficulties at her Perth school, Charlie is now thriving in Karratha thanks to the work of the teaching assistant. The teaching assistant spends a few hours each day working one-on-one with Charlie, giving her the confidence to then participate in the main classroom activities - a confidence she had lacked in Perth, Christine said.
“She actually likes going to school and hates school holidays now - she never used to want to go before, but now she loves it,” Christine said, with Charlie nodding agreement. For The Smith Family, giving Christmas presents through its annual Toy and Book Appeal is another way to help boost the confidence of children in need by ensuring they take part in the festive season like everyone else. And while The Smith Family now focuses on helping children gain an education, the Toy and Book Appeal harks back to the group’s origins in 1922. Back then, the charity was started by five philanthropists who collected presents to give to children in orphanages. Many of the gifts given to Karratha families this year were donated by energy company Horizon Power, which also partners with The Smith Family in its Learning for Life program. “Our staff in Karratha, Port Hedland and Perth have been excitedly buying gifts for disadvantaged children in the Pilbara and Perth to enjoy at Christmas,” Horizon Power brand manager Andrew Riches said. This December, The Smith Family will distribute more than 3,000 individual toys and books to more than 600 Western Australia families across the state.

Sweet homes showcase Christmas spirit By Tamara Binamat Retravision Karratha held their inaugural gingerbread house competition last weekend, and the local community presented amazing displays of craft and baking at the event. An island shack inspired creation won first place for the Halford family, who said they wanted a beach theme for their entry. “ G i n g e r b re a d

houses are always snow themes so we thought it would be good to go for a Pilbara theme,” they said. Second prize was awarded to Natasha Wheelock for her homestead house and third prize went to the Bushby family for “St Paul’s House of Sweetness”, a recreation of the St Paul’s church. Retravision owners passed out Christmas gifts to all the other entrants and the event drew a huge crowd to the display at Centre Karratha.

Many people don’t realize that they have options to stay in Australia – often as a permanent resident.

Being a migrant myself, I understand the difficulties involved in moving to a new country. I have been living and working in WA as an Australian registered migration agent for over 10 years and have assisted several thousand people to obtain temporary and permanent residence visas. My commitment to you is that I will give you a clear assessment of your visa options and whether you have a good chance of success. If I don’t think your application will succeed I will tell you this up-front. My firm specializes in Permanent Residence visas such as Employer Nomination (186), Regional Sponsored Migration (187), General Skilled (189/190) as well as Temporary work (457) and Partner Visas. In the games, the Under-12s teams Cyclones and KPS/Millars played hard right to the end, but it was KPS/Millars who were too strong, winning 10-2. And it was another fast-paced game when the Under-15s played, as the Midgetz played coast-to-coast basketball for the entire match to defeat the Cometz by 63 points. in Karratha, [who] will then graduate to reffing at the senior level.” KBC president Daren Berry said the program will also help the six junior players appreciate the game from a different perspective. “Reffing is an essential part of basketball and helps with kids development and makes them understand a different side of the rules of the game,” he said. The referees presentation followed the last junior games for this season.

More than 30 riders and a good showing of spectators turned up in overcast and delightfully cooler conditions for the second summer series mountain bike race in Karratha on December 8. The Burrup Mountain Bike Club’s summer social series events are more relaxed than regular season races, and it was good to see a mix of old and new riders, men and women and kids as young as eight joining in. The 4.7km round two course took riders from Dogs Hollow – possibly the most famous trail in the Karratha hills, with its steep uphill going into a long, fast flowing rollercoaster downhill – into a new section of track called Dog’s Breakfast. The Breakfast trail is a short, chaotic section of single track, which runs along a rocky ridge that ends with a steep downhill section into a berm. All riders put in a fantastic effort on the day but special mention goes to Mark Smith, Nick Muller and Toby Muller, who all managed to complete an incredible five laps in the one-hour time limit and finished in that respective order.
The summer series events are run once a month through the hotter period of the year and are either held in the evening or early morning to beat the heat with the main purpose being to have a bit of fun. The next summer social series will be held on January 5 at 6.30am and all are welcome. Visit the Burrup Mountain Bike Club website at home.spin.net.au/burrupmb for details.

Fishing can be lucky for some and unlucky for others. But whether the luck is good or bad, it doesn’t really matter because just being out there fishing is a bonus to begin with. Matt Gates and Jae Bruynzeel recently highlighted how fickle luck can be. Matt was out for six days chasing the big blues that have been running lately and he didn’t catch one fish. On the other hand, Jae from On Strike got out for the first time in ages recently and immediately landed the big blue marlin pictured this week. Jae said the weather had been perfect and that there was no swell. The water temperature was 25 degrees, and she was fishing a current line in 400m of water with some big lures in the boat’s spread astern. The massive marlin snavelled the lure and took a screaming run of around 450m within seconds. After strapping herself into the harness, Jae watched the fish do some jumps before she finally managed to bring it boat-side for a tag shot and photo. The fish was measured to be around 180kg, which was a great fish on a 37kg line.
Steve Michaels is another fisher who had a quirky twist of luck while fishing from his jetski recently. He was fishing with lures on the other side of the gulf in the creeks but didn’t catch a single fish. What he did manage to land with his fishing lures, however, were two mud crabs! The Exmouth Game Fishing Club would also like to remind members that the end-of-year party is on December 21. Certificates and trophies will be given out and Santa will be dropping in for the kids – but RSVPs are essential. Find out more at the clubhouse or at egfc.com.au.
