Students agree to commit to their future Male students of Karratha Senior High School signed their name this week in front of witnesses to agree to commit themselves to achieving personal success through a positive pathway in further education, training or employment. Each year students around Australia participating in the ‘No Dole’ program take part in a formal ceremony involving inspirational and motivational role models and the signing of a charter. This was the first Charter Signing Ceremony to be held in Karratha. Young man dies in Karratha car crash

A district coroner has revealed that Karratha woman Kylie Lynch died while on holiday in Coral Bay after having a peanut allergy, may not have been properly educated about her condition. Kylie died at the age of 20 when she ate a dessert containing nuts in Coral Bay after it was heard that she had inquired as to whether it contained nuts and was told it didn’t. The coroner revealed that because there is no immunologist in Karratha to educate people, she did not fully understand the seriousness of her condition. “If Kylie had received proper preventative care before her death, it is possible that her death could have been avoided”.

A 23-year-old man was sadly killed in a car roll-over on Karratha Road on the 22nd August. The Holden Commodore with three male occupants rolled over at about 6.55pm. One passenger was killed. "The other two occupants were conveyed to Karratha Hospital with minor injuries only," Inspector Ray Briggs said. "Initial investigations suggest that excessive speed was a contributing cause of the crash." Major Crash officers are investigating. Source: WA Today

Billy-Rae and the birth of style He sat amongst the flowers in Arkansas for hours and thought with all his powers of great cool. He sat as there fell showers which dripped beneath the bowers, declared, ‘Well heck, I ain’t nobody’s fool.’

Maybe I’ll go punk to get out of this funk? he thought amidst the daisies and the puddles. Or maybe reggae…clunk I think I’d be just junk and still he sat there in a rightly muddle.

He needed revolution a song might be solution to change the world with all his talent grand. Something of constitution to mark his evolution and prove it then and there he was the man.

For reggae meant long dreads and more exotic threads than blue jeans that he’d worn since kiddie days and ready to bang heads, ‘I need a look that spreads’, he uttered to the sky in rainy haze.

But what song, he not knew, and thus got in a stew and rather thought, if singing were not it, then maybe what he’d do to stop him feeling blue was take his image, mix it up a bit.

A rising star he’d be. He’d show us and we’d see that anything is possible with gumption and springing up with glee, he shouted, ‘Awww…yippee!’ For suddenly solution and rambunction.

‘I! I am the one. I’m country’s coolest son. I’m denim to the core with southern drawl. My blue heart, that’s the one, will shine again in sun, and WILL NOT BREAK in con-fu-sion y’all.’ And thus, the look was born, which many since have scorned, but one which he procured from his fine stylist. Billy-Rae weren’t torn, no longer deep forlorn, his hair it swept through hist’ry like a virus. And now he’s gone had kids, quite talented tin lids, who knows their daddy’s super duper clever. That song of his forbids him ever on the skids, but, more the point, that mullet’s gold forever!

Isn’t this a part of our history that should be passionately preserved? Doesn’t this place have the huge potential to help the local society by promoting tourism? We know that the local government is trying to promote tourism in this area by having tours and looking after the old buildings. But wouldn’t it be better to have and to maintain cleanliness in the place and make it a safe and a healthy environment for everybody to enjoy? With this in mind, I went to watch/support the U18 football match between Sharks and Kats on Sunday 8th August. To say I came away with mixed emotions would be an understatement.

coach; you acquitted yourselves admirably under difficult circumstances. Well done for your disciplined attitude and effort. To the Kats coach; criticism for the manner in which you encouraged and condoned certain aspects of a not very well controlled game. None of the players on the field deserved that. (One Barry Hall is enough). To Kats No. 28; well done (you know why). Your parents have a son to be proud of.

What should have been a fair, friendly competitive game lapsed into something far from that which was a shame for spectators and players alike.

Sharks; congratulations on your win.

To the Sharks players and

Looking forward to witnessing a great game of football next time.

Response Following CALM’s response about the Correllas, it is incorrect that the birds are not coming from the Rubbish Tip. I had to call a person on the phone at the Tip yesterday and I could not hear him due to the noise of the Corellas. The Corellas ARE coming into town from the rubbish tip as I live in Baynton and I see them coming from the tip. I have also been to the tip to dispose of garden waste and the tip is a mass of Corellas. This is where the concern of disease comes from. It is also incorrect that the birds brown stained colour is from dusty areas or muddy areas (no rain in Karratha since March 2009 so there are no muddy areas). I visited another town in the Shire of Roebourne on the weekend and saw a flock of Corellas. Their feathers were a white colour. CALM’s response that the birds are coming into town because of the dry season is also WRONG.

Corella Crisis (Last Week) Karratha had an abundance of rain in March 2009 (300mls). The birds still came. I have lived in Baynton for 15 years and they come regardless of what the weather pattern has been. The birds do not come into the properties to feed, they land in the trees and destroy them. They chew the branches from the trees until they fall onto the ground. The residents can and do make noises like clanging pots together to disperse them but as I said they fly off, do a complete circle and come back and land into the same trees and continue destroying them. Most people are at work when the birds land in the trees and on the weekends you spend all day trying to chase them away. The comment CALM made regarding planting alternative species to river red gums such as yellow Poinciana is ridiculous, these trees take at least 15 years to grow to a decent height. Bluetongue zone amended A total of 20 pastoral stations have been removed from the bluetongue virus (BTV) free area following the detection of infected cattle on a Pilbara property. The National Arbovirus Monitoring Program (NAMP) technical committee has amended the boundaries of the BTV-free zone to exclude properties found within 100 kilometres of the infected property. Bluetongue is a potentially serious disease of sheep that is transmitted by biting midges. Cattle may be infected with the virus and act as a reservoir, but rarely show the disease. Bluetongue virus has been present in northern Australia

for more than 40 years and is endemic in large parts of the Kimberley.

sensitive markets in Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Israel,” Dr Higgs said.

Bluetongue virus was first detected in the Pilbara in 2001.

“However, maintaining bluetongue-free status in the Pilbara was reliant on ongoing negative testing. Detection of the virus has resulted in properties being removed from the BTV-free zone.”

The Department of Agriculture and Food conducts regular surveillance for bluetongue virus in WA in line with NAMP requirements to determine BTV-free zones to support international trade. Chief Veterinary Officer Tony Higgs said the Pilbara was declared free of bluetongue virus last year, after completing the mandatory two years of testing with negative results. “This allowed cattle and sheep producers in the Pilbara region to access some additional bluetongue-

International markets for live cattle such as Israel, Jordan and Saudi Arabia require cattle to have been in a BTV-free zone for at least 60 days prior to export. However, most countries which take live cattle from WA, including several in the Middle East and those in South-East Asia, do not have restrictions in relation to BTV.

Gap Ridge Village workers paddle for a good cause Sodexo Health and Lifestyle Coordinators Ashleigh Fletcher and Mathew Dawson from the Gap Ridge Village competed in the Avon Descent as a team of two recently. The Avon Descent is Western Australia’s own unique sporting event that attracts competitors and spectators from throughout Australia and overseas. Competitors challenge the Avon and Swan rivers in a variety of paddle and power craft in an exciting two-day time trial over 134 gruelling kilometres. This year was the lowest water levels seen in more than 30 years with just 0.3m of water. Ash and Mat decided to do the paddle as a personal challenge in conjunction with raising awareness for the McGrath Foundation which supports breast cancer. Famous Australian cricketer Glen McGrath and his wife Jane launched the McGrath Foundation in 2002 with two main objectives: to raise money to place breast care nurses in hospitals in right across rural and regional Australia; and to educate young women to become breast aware. Unfortunately due to

Karratha students complete project • Mathew Dawson & Ashleigh Fletcher difficulties with the rudder system of the craft they were unable to complete the race as they did not make cut off times set at Bells Rapid. They did however paddle over 100kms before reaching Bells Rapid. All in all it was a hard but very rewarding race and they achieved their main goal which was to raise funds for the McGrath Foundation. They would like to thank

Year 12 students from Pindan College via Karratha Campus Pilbara TAFE have recently completed a major project as part of their course. The students are studying a Trade Start course from which they’ll gain their preapprenticeship qualification. The class have been split in to two groups and study alternate weeks. To prove their engineering skills they have to complete a

project, and the project they chose was to build a trailer. The trailer took students Blake Passmore, Rob Diggins, Jon Gaunt and Josh Reid 2 weeks to complete. Pindan College tutor Scott Cannon and Pilbara TAFE tutor Peter Flemmer are overwhelmed with the boys achievements. “The trailer is fantastic. We are both very proud of the students, they have done very well” Scott Cannon said.

Time for a new Australian flag The discussion of the Australian flag is often a controversial one. Many people believe that the Australian flag doesn’t represent the true Australia, and one of those people in particular is Fred Rieben. Fred Rieben began designing his idea of the Australian flag in 1987 and now takes it wherever he travels to spread the word to eventually fulfill his dream of having a flag that the Australian nation can be proud of. He believes that his flag design named ‘Southern Cross and Boomerang’ represents the true unique beauty of Australia. He explained to us that not only does the flag represent the obvious of the Southern Cross, a boomerang and the green and gold patriotic colours, but there is more than meets the eye. The blue also represents the stars over the blue ocean, the yellow used for the boomerang represents the sand and the green is the bush in the foreground. He also explained that the dotted pattern used is to acknowledge the indigenous community, as it imitates their artistic style. Ironically Fred is from the United States but believes that

• Fred holding his design for a new Australian flag proudly is not an issue as he has lived in Australia for many years. He doesn’t agree that the Australian flag should contain the Union Jack flag as not all Australians are of English heritage and arguably believes that it insults the original indigenous owners of this land, which many people do agree with. Fred has no desire to go straight to the Australian Government with his proposal but intends to keep campaigning by handing out thousands of car stickers and gaining as much media attention as possible. One day we may just see it flying at the houses of parliament.

Awesome artists in the Pilbara Budding young artists from Karratha Senior High School and Roebourne District High School have been hard at work the past fortnight on the AWESOME Arts Creative Challenge “Home Ground” project, supported by Woodside. The young artists have been working with professional artists Nadia Fragnito, Michael Wise, Amanda Barrett Hayes and Amber Onat Gregory to create an inspiring array of artworks that explore their idea of ‘home’. AWESOME artist Nadia Fragnito says the project was well received and saw the students creating their own dioramas of settings or places that reflect their identity, as well as performances about life in Karratha. “We attached cameras to the dioramas and the images created by this were projected as the backdrop for a theatre performance,” said Ms Fragnito. “We played around with different physical theatre and playmaking techniques like stop-start pacing and tableaus to tell stories and some of the kids chose to have dialogue where others chose to use movement and sound tracks,” she said. In Roebourne, artists Amanda Barrett Hayes and Amber Onat Gregory had been running similar workshops with Roebourne students and had diverse and wonderful outcomes. “We started off the project by building shelters and a cubby house and from this, we got ideas of what the kids would like to build in their very own home sculptures,” said Ms Hayes. “We made objects that we can put inside the ‘home’ structures and we created most of these sculptures from recycled materials like cardboard boxes, plastic and insulation foam and we created TV's, a fridge, a table tennis set, a computer and even disco balls!” she said. The artworks and performances

• Young Patrick from the Roebourne District High School

• The Karratha Senior High Group created were unveiled at community celebrations in Karratha and Roebourne at the end of the fortnight, where teachers, parents and community members were invited to enjoy the home-inspired creations. After the celebrations, a selection of the artworks created will then be showcased in an exhibition at the 2010 AWESOME International Arts Festival for Bright Young Things held in the Perth CBD this November. Creative Challenge is AWESOME’s year-round regional program that visits ten regional and remote communities in Western Australia with a different arts project each year.

UN Women born If you don’t already know, on the 2nd July 2010, the United Nations General Assembly amalgamated its various separate women’s programs including the renowned UNIFEM into one entity; “UN Women”. It’s a move Soroptimist International supports as the UN efforts will now turn to ensuring the body has the human and financial resources necessary to succeed. The new body aims to better advance the human rights of women as central to global efforts to reduce poverty and move towards greater realisation of peace and democracy in the world. Of particular importance in the change is the importance of civil society participation in the new body. Women’s groups figure highly in this change. Soroptimist International, Karratha and Districts (SI-KAD) is just one of those groups that, through its national and international affiliations, was and will continue to be a global voice for women

through its ongoing relationship with the UN. At the local level, SI-KAD works to raise awareness, advocate for, and take action in support of women and girls in the community. It encourages and honours women and girls who are endeavouring to make a difference to their own or others’ circumstances. It sees itself as a network for women and girls to share their stories and an opportunity to gain support in their endeavours. Join SI-KAD members at their ‘Speaking Personally’ dinner meeting on Wednesday 1 September at the Karratha International Hotel at 6.30pm to listen to Jeunesse Pearson’s of the Beacon Foundation journey to Karratha and the work of the Foundation for which she works.

Getting a head start in HR

Embrace the exchange Karratha Senior High School has embraced an international tone recently, with the arrival of 17 year old German exchange student, Johannes Rolfs. Johannes arrived in Australia in July and will leave at the end of August after his two month stay. Johannes has been staying with KSHS Year 11 student Liam Pilgrim, who spent two months during the December and January school holidays with Johannes’ family in Germany. The boys accessed the opportunity through exchange provider AFS. Liam’s exchange was organised through Rio Tinto, who also offer scholarships in this area. AFS linked Liam and Johannes, who have formed a firm friendship through these exchanges. Liam was offered the choice of three countries and selected Germany, as he had been there in 2006 for the World Cup and liked what he saw. His highlights of the trip were seeing snow for the first time and

the friendliness of the people he encountered. Johannes opted for Australia as a place he would like to visit and has found it to be an interesting place, with people he describes as friendly and open minded. Both students have attended school in their exchange countries and both found the experience very different. Liam embraced the language barrier and picked up a bit of German, while Johannes has found the focus on 6 subject areas, rather than the 12 -14 he studies in Germany, very different. Both boys have proven to be excellent ambassadors for their countries and have had very positive experiences of this program.

When Natasha Zeplin won the Portaccomm Business and Management scholarship in December 2009, she didn’t expect it would have such a positive impact on her future studies. As the Tom Price local explains, in addition to completing a Certificate III in Business Administration, she’s also finished a Certificate IV in Business (Human Resources) and has just one unit to finish in her Diploma of Business Management. “The scholarship really gave me the incentive to further my Business studies and decide on the area that interests me most,” Natasha says. “I am extremely happy with my results so far and am looking forward to enrolling in more units. In fact by the end of the year, I hope to have completed the Diploma of Human Resources Management as well!” Natasha says that the general business courses gave her a great overview of management, as well as plenty of opportunities to exercise her creative talents. “I really enjoy creating reports and writing advertising and marketing material,” she says. “Far from being a dry subject, there are so many aspects that are challenging and entertaining.

On tour at Rio Tinto’s port operations

• Rio Tinto’s tug boats at Cape Lambert.

• The tug boats are also equipped to extinguish fires

By Olly Stahl Locals and tourists were able to take a glimpse at Rio Tinto's port operations at Cape Lambert recently. Rio Tinto organised an open day on Saturday 14th August and ran special tours throughout the day. As expected, the interest was huge, with many tourists and locals taking part. Those who were lucky enough to get a ticket gathered in Wickham, where a short briefing was held. Once all were geared up with the usual safety gear - a shiny new helmet and safety goggles - the group climbed the bus out to Rio Tinto's Cape Lambert operations. The 90-minute tour first took the visitors around the site, past the 3km long jetty and to the tugboat harbour where the four tugs were parked. Visitors on the day were amongst the first to be shown around the newest tug, the 'Oita'.

Closing Down The time has come for us to move along, we would like to advise all our customers and catering clients that Dolphins will be closed for business as of 9.00pm Friday 3rd September 2010. We want to sincerely thank all of those people who have supported us throughout the good and bad times over the last 8 years, your support has always been greatly appreciated we couldn’t have survived this journey without you. To our loyal and faithful customers a huge THANK YOU, we know who you are, we will miss your cheery hello’s and wish you and your families all the very best.

Interestingly, in that process the whole carriages get picked up from the tracks, turned upside down and put back onto the tracks. After all that excitement, it was back to Wickham where visitors were treated to a free sausage sizzle and cold drinks. A big thank you to Rio Tinto for opening the doors for interested visitors and also to the staff of the Roebourne Visitor Centre who conducted the tours. Regular tours are conducted on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 9.30 a.m., starting from the Roebourne Visitor Centre. Photos courtesy of Pilbara Media Solutions

Built at the Shipco wharf in Whangarei, New Zealand, it was only launched in early 2010 and is Cape Lambert's strongest tug. As iron ore production is steadily increasing, Rio Tinto is looking into expanding the tug fleet to up to 10 boats within the next few years. From the harbour it was straight back into the bus and further around the site and to the stock pile, past miles and miles of conveyor belt transporting crushed and ground iron ore out the enormous cargo ships. On the way out the bus stopped so visitors could watch how the carriages transporting iron ore from the inland mines are emptied of their cargo.

The Sneaky Weasel Gang By Crystal Stewart The Sneaky Weasel Gang performed live at the Tambrey Centre on the 20th and 22nd August and at the Mermaid Hotel on the 21st. The boys from Perth came to the Pilbara as part of their North West Tour which ended on the 28th August in Geraldton. The audience were impressed with The Sneaky Weasel Gang and their 60s garage blues and funky rock style music. They played all their own music including Whim Creek, Wait Till Tomorrow and Phone Booth but as the show came to a close they played a few covers including Bob Marley’s Jammin’.

• Alan Lambert and Ryan Graney

The boys are all extremely talented, especially the lead singer who also played lead guitar. The guitar solo’s he played had everyone hypnotised.

?

• Ryan, Daniel, Ryce, Srah, Rocko and Pete

Although I was quite disappointed with the album I bought after the show due to the limited number of songs and choice, I would definitely go see them again if they came back into town.

• Maddie and Sheree Peters

The opera is coming to Karratha

When one thinks of an opera production, you often imagine only a huge theatre in the city would showcase such a production but the residents of Karratha are soon to entertained by the opera La Boheme by Giacomo Puccini, produced by CoOpera, Adelaide at The Walkington Theatre on the 2nd September. Premiering in 1896, La Boheme is the quintessential romantic opera, becoming one of the most widely performed operas with its poignant story, engaging Bohemian characters and melodic score exploring the aspects of perfect love and true friendship. Featuring 10 opera vocalists and 12 musicians live on stage for this sweeping saga, La Boheme is a stunningly staged, lit and costumed

opera – perfect for both frequent opera goers and newer viewers alike. Puccini’s brilliant music amplifies the drama, and, so long as we believe in these characters, this story inevitably touches our most fundamental human emotions. Experienced choreographer/ director Nick Carroll aims to entertain, and with its blend of humour, romance and tragedy, La Boheme is fertile material for a complete theatrical experience. Set in no specific era, this production will have its own distinctive visual, aural and dramatic aesthetic, in the best traditions of CoOpera. The production is mainly sung in English with select songs in Italian.

“This low-budget and imaginative performance of the Puccini tearjerker displays all this young company’s strengths. It is energetic, well conceived and executed and, above all, finely sung.” The Adelaide Advertiser

Pet Watch Award

Just after lunch on the weekend of the FeNaCING Festival, Sue and Laurie were driving along Radley Road in Bayton. In the distance they saw a little white Maltese running from side to side. They stopped the car and managed to call her over. Sue picked her up and noticed she fortunately was wearing a collar and tag. Having no luck finding her owner in one of the nearby homes, Sue decided to take her home and call the number on the tag. Three hours later Molly’s relieved owners came to collect her. It appeared Molly had squeezed through a hole in a newly erected fence and had travelled nearly half a kilometre before she was spotted. Thanks to the vigilance of Sue and the fact that Molly was wearing an identity tag this story had a happy ending.

Pied Butcherbird The pied butcherbird is one of the larger butcherbirds found in Australia. They are a very friendly, intelligent and inquisitive bird but at the same time quite an aggressive hunter, thus their name. The large hook on the end of their beak is used to pries lizards, snakes and insects from crevices. They will also take baby birds, finches and mice jamming them into the fork of a tree to return later and eat. They hunt both from in the air and also by perch pouncing. The will also work in pairs, backing each other up while cornering pray. An example of this is when I found two juvenile birds trying to get at some caged doves.

There was a bird on each side of the cage, one trying to scare the doves across to the other side where the other bird was hanging trying to grab them through the wire. ‘The sustained fluted piping of the pied butcherbird is one of the purest sounds uttered by any Australian bird’ (Complete book of Australian birds) and I’m sure many reading this have heard their beautiful song at some time. It is amusing to hear the juveniles learning to sing as it’s like listening to someone of whom their voice is breaking. It doesn’t quite sound right. The adults hold permanent territories and are more communal than other butcherbirds, living in family parties. Nests are a cup of sticks,

lined with fine grass, which are built in a fork of a tree about 5 meters above the ground. Young birds are brown and white and do not get their adult plumage till their second year. They will help the parents feed later broods of siblings unless moving off to find new territories for themselves.

There would be many of you that have had an inquisitive young bird beg for a handout of food. Even adults are not immune to receiving a free handout. Interestingly adult birds will join in the chase when the mud larks and miners are trying to drive off a hawk.

Karratha consultation set to empower diverse communities The Shire of Roebourne is hosting the Minister for Citizenship and Multicultural Interests John Castrilli on his visit to Karratha on Wednesday 1st September as he opens a regional consultation focusing on the needs of Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CaLD) communities. Coordinated by the Office of Multicultural Interests (OMI) in collaboration with the Shire of Roebourne, the consultation will be run by Walter Gomes and Helen Maddocks from OMI at the Shire of Roebourne, Welcome Road, Karratha, from 1pm to 3.30pm and 7pm to 9pm. With the ongoing development of Karratha as it ramps up to become a city of the north, the region is seeking to attract and retain more people, resulting in a culturally diverse region. The session provides an opportunity for CaLD communities, service providers, employers, community groups and non-government organisations to highlight gaps

in services and resulting impacts, comment on what is working well, and generate locally based solutions. Shire of Roebourne deputy president John Lally is supportive of the consultation and encourages the community to get involved. “By working together with the government we can ensure longterm planning meets the needs of CaLD communities in Shire of Roebourne” Cr Lally said. “I am looking forward to an ongoing relationship with the OMI as they lead the development of multiculturalism in WA”. Following the meeting, all issues and suggestions identified will be compiled into a summary report that will be made available to all participants. OMI will work with the Shire to follow up on key issues, advise of outcomes and provide ongoing updates. To register your interest to attend, please contact the OMI at harmony@omi.wa.gov.au or phone 9217 1600.

One of these incentives is the distribution of sealed compartmentalised Tupperware lunch boxes which eliminates the need for plastic lunch wrapping. Millars Well Primary School secured the funding through their proposal to conduct a waste audit, which meant rummaging through their waste to determine the level of waste before and after the implementation of a

Congratulations to Tientsje and Damian Kernan for the birth of baby Tasman. Tasman was born on the 24th August at 11.27am and weighing 4160grams. He will be a younger brother for sister Greer aged 2. Tientsje and Damian would like to thank all the midwives and staff at the Nickol Bay Hospital for all their help.

Proud parents Cassandra and Tyson gave birth to a beautiful baby boy. Lattrel Richard Halden was born on the 25th August at 8.37am. He weighed 7.9lbs.

John and Angela Davis are proud to announce the arrival of their baby boy on the 25th August at 6.48am weighing 3.5 kilos. John and Angela haven’t decided on a name yet but older sister AmberLee can’t wait for him to come home.

StandBy is here for you If you have been unfortunate enough to be affected by suicide then you can at least be reassured that you don’t have to go through this alone. The StandBy Response Service is a suicide intervention organisation and have one of their stations based in the Pilbara. The Karratha based organisation that works through the Pilbara Health Network aims to help people that have been bereaved by suicide, and also the families and friends of those who have attempted suicide. The police, ambulance, or other service will ask the family/ partner/friend if they would like to see someone from the service following the loss and StandBy will be contacted straight away on their 24 hour, 7 days a week service line. There are many ways in which StandBy can help but the process will begin with an initial crisis counselling session with two members to determine what support the family/individual needs. This could be anything from just providing support

and comfort, to helping to obtain a lawyer or contacting local community support centres to provide food and accommodation. At a time of crisis and loss, people tend to struggle to think straight and lose track of what needs to be arranged which is where StandBy comes in to provide support and assistance. Throughout the grieving stage, StandBy will monitor the family/individual to check they are receiving all the support they need and help further if required. Often one suicide can provoke another so this stage is very critical, and has often been overlooked in the past. World Suicide Prevention Day is held on the 10th September this year. The day is held to raise awareness of this sad and unfortunate issue and how you can help to make a difference within your community and to others. A morning tea will be held on this day by the Pilbara Health Network to give everyone more information about this.

Karratha's miracle babies Two years ago, Chelsea Elmer and Doug Roberts from Karratha gave birth to twin boys Malcolm and Jai at 25 weeks and 5 days gestation. That’s just over 14 weeks early. Jai weighed 795grams and the eldest Malcolm weighed 885grams. As Chelsea went into labour in Karratha, she had to be flown down to Perth by the Royal Flying Doctor Service and finally gave birth at King Edward Memorial Hospital. The survival rate for a baby born at 25 weeks is about 50% and for 26 weeks it is 80% so luckily for Chelsea they had a greater chance of survival. After 10 weeks in a neonatal special care nursery and following only a few complications they finally came home to Karratha. Young Malcolm and Jai have just celebrated their second birthday on the 27th August. They regularly have checkups with paediatricians, physiotherapists, OT and eye specialists, but compared to the complications and sometimes tragic endings for many other premature babies, these two really are miracle babies. Chelsea and Doug count themselves extremely lucky.

FREE WEEKLY 28 - 29 August 2010

Elite BMX Coach Travels to Karratha By Nick Muller Last weekend 75 riders from the Karratha BMX Club participated in coaching clinics with an elite BMX Coach from Perth. Daniel Sprague elite rider and coach travelled to Karratha to help Karratha riders develop their skills and take their riding to the next level. Thanks to funding from the Department of Sport and Recreation this season has seen Karratha riders gain the same level of coaching that is available in Perth. The DSR funding has assisted the Karratha BMX Club in flying Daniel to the Pilbara several times this year. Daniel has been racing BMX since he was six years old and has won several World Titles over the years. Although still a strong competitor Daniel is now putting back in to the sport as a coach to assist others improve their skills. On the weekend

Daniel commented on the improvement of all the Karratha riders who have been taking part in the coaching clinics. The weekend was not all about coaching; it was also an opportunity for Daniel to show off his skills when he raced the local riders on Friday night. The Club also held a BBQ at the track on Saturday night to allow riders to practise their skills and to enjoy a casual ride around the track with Daniel. Having an elite level rider visit the Karratha Club several times this season has seen the confidence and ability of local riders increase dramatically. Hopefully the training that the Karratha riders have been doing will help out in a few weeks during the third and final round of the North West Championships. The NW’s will be hosted by the Karratha BMX Club on the weekend of the 11th of September; this event will see riders travel from around the State to test their skills on the

Karratha track. There will be approximately ten elite riders competing during this event including Daniel and Luke Madill. Madill is another top BMX rider who represented Australia at the Olympic Games. With BMX racing being held on the Friday and Saturday nights this is an excellent opportunity for Karratha residents to come down and experience top level BMX racing. BMX racing is held at the Karratha BMX Club on Rosemary Rd every Friday night with gates opening around 6.00 pm and racing getting underway at 7.30 pm. BMX is an excellent sport for the whole family with riders at the Karratha Club ranging in age from 3 years old to some of the dads. If you would like further information on BMX please come down to the track on a Friday night or email karrathabmx@westnet.com. au
