Last Saturday, international cruise liner Radiance of the Seas returned to Port Hedland where more than 1000 travellers disembark from the 90, 000 tonne vessel and experience life in the Pilbara for a day. Local Sherr Mcghie went out to Spoil Bank to watch the ship leave Port Hedland and got this awesome shot while she was there.

Wildlife watch: Spinafex Pigeon By Jenny Fox This little brown bird, at first glance resembles a quail but in actual fact it is a pigeon. They look like quails due to the fact they are small and run away rather than fly, only taking to the air at the last minute. Even then they fly low to the ground. They are one of two species of Australian pigeons that have a crest (the other is our gray crested pigeon which are much stockier in body). There are two species of the spinafex pigeon, with the one in the photo being a red bellied and found only in the

Pilbara region. These little pigeons are terrestrial, spending all their time on the ground. They are also nomadic following the rains and food supplies. Being a pigeon they are basically a seedeater. They are very well adapted to the arid zones and along with the diamond dove they are able to forage during the hottest part of the day. Their plumage is well suited to camouflaging them in their environment of red rock and spinafex grasslands. Breeding occurs after the rains where two eggs are laid in a stony scrape in the ground.
Both parents share nesting duties and the babies are able to leave the nest after a week and follow the parents. They use the spinafex mounds for shelter, thus the name.
Bushfire burns 18,000 hectares A bushfire fire was burning slowly in a northerly direction towards Pannawonica Road and North West Coastal Highway during the week. The fire that was reported on March 3 and had burnt 18,000 hectares of bush land by the time firefighters were able to control it on March 7. Six private Fire and Rescue Service firefighters from Pannawonica had been busy trying to control the fire, being supported by three tankers and two graders. There was no threat to lives or homes but there was smoke in the area. A FESA spokesperson said that although there was no immediate danger, people still need to be aware of what is going around them and keep up to date with the bushfire advice alerts that are updated regularly. During the fire the FESA spokesperson said motorists should avoid the area and be aware of fire and other emergency services personnel working on site. Once the bushfire was under control, the spokesperson said the local Government would monitor the area for
• Firefighters spent four days trying to control the fire the remainder of the day. “The danger has passed, but you need to remain vigilant in case the situation changes,” a spokesperson from FESA said. The cause of the fire is unknown and FESA are asking people to report any suspicious behaviour to Police Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. By Courtney Bertling The Roebourne Golf Club are trying to raise $1 million to re-build the clubhouse and are seeking donations from individuals and companies to help make it happen. Walking up the clubhouse you see an outside area with no proper shade or cover. Inside, it is quite cramped, trying to fit the pool tables and room to play darts, along with couches, chairs and tables. Also in this small area is the bar, toilets and a kitchen area. This building has been here for 20 years and only with a few changes, never a full refurbishment, it has done well to serve its purpose to keep people entertained. However, it is time to expand and as ‘donations gatherer’ Ross Deopel explained, also to make it more family friendly.
“We want to take the whole lot out and start from scratch,” he said. “We will probably leave the concrete pad and start up from there. “The entire outdoor area will become an undercover area, so when it rains we won’t have to quickly run inside. “We want to completely redo the inside, as it is not just for the Roebourne Golf Club; the clubhouse also holds pool and dart competitions, so we need a bit more room.” Mr Deopel said they also want to re-do the kitchen and toilets and make it a bit more structurally sound for cyclones. “Because it is a club, it is a family area, so we want to do a bit more for the kids; at the moment they can only run around on the grass outside for fun,” he said. Although, $1 million does seem

The Pilbara Poet
Free Weekly 10 - 11 March 2012
by Elise Batchelor
In all the years I’ve lived in the Pilbara, I have confessed to few a guilty secret regarding my north west credentials: I don’t like fishing. There. Said it. But in order to come out of this marine closet, I had to have a moment with the Lord to clear things up first.
A fishy confession God gave me limbs, so I might walk, a pair of hands for pen or chalk, the blessing of a plate, a knife and fork. But nothing of use for fishing. He gave me eyes to watch the sea, a right bicep (I’m flexing, see?) a rod, a reel, yes, just for me. But not one skill for fishing. God gave me all the coast I want, the skills to bake a French croissant upon which I do jam anoint when I head out, go fishing. But jam and fish, don’t complement
each other’s needs, I do lament Oh God, are you so darn hell bent on making me crap at fishing. Up here most blokes have boats and rods. Dear God, I ask, what are the odds you’d place up here self catching cods so I’d feel like I’m fishing? But no, I puke, when out there trawling, fritty with salt and snot and bawling on the deck curled up or crawling ‘cause someone begged, “Come fishing!” My husband dear, like me’s not thick. He’s seen me once reel in a brick.
But all he’s ever caught’s a stick when we have gone out fishing. A stick, that’s great, I praise, not railing, The plus side is – no need for scaling. No foul smell, or rank de-tailing, the post script to all fishing. But God, thank you, for here we are, blessed at our table, graced by far, both giving blessings from afar for sucking both at fishing. For here, dear God, you have provided frozen fish from a box, deep fried, and now that in you I’ve confided, I’m off the hook with fishing.

Karratha Police would like to remind members of the public about their responsibility when hosting a party. As police we often turn up to parties when they are out of control or when persons have become aggressive after drinking too much. If you are hosting a party you have a duty of care for the safety and wellbeing of your guests as you may be liable for what your guests do during or after they leave your party. I have listed some handy hints that will help you to organise your next party. If you follow the list you will ensure a good time is had by all and you will prevent your guests from hurting
themselves, damaging your property or just making a fool out of themselves or anyone else at the party • Give out written invitations. Try to avoid casual or group ( F a c e b o o k ) invitations. • Notify your local police. Either b y calling them or registering on line at www.police.wa.gov.au • Notify your neighbours as a courtesy. • Ensure there is enough food and water available. • Have light or mid-strength alcohol on hand. • Use cans instead of glass bottles where possible to minimise the risk of broken glass. • Encourage guests to drink water or
soft drinks between glasses of alcohol. • Overcrowding can lead to unruly behaviour. • Aim to lower the level of noise after midnight. There are substantial penalties if music exceeds Environmental Protection Act noise standards in the early hours of the morning. • If you are holding a large event, consider hiring a Crowd Controller to help direct people and ensure unwanted guests are not permitted entry. • Ensure your guests get home safely. • Help arrange lifts, call a taxi or have them stay over if they have been drinking.

Grylls’ promise to the Pilbara
• Brendon Grylls overlooking Sharpe Avenue which will soon be transformed thanks to Royalties for Regions
By Courtney Bertling National leader Brendon Grylls will go up against a Labor’s safe-seat for the Pilbara in the next elections. Mr Grylls has said he is prepared to do whatever it takes to ensure Royalties for Regions continues with the same drive and passion people have seen over the last few years. “Since becoming Minister, I have spent half of my time devoted to the Pilbara issues, and now so many people come to me to help issues that arise,” he said. “The Pilbara is not just about all the
infrastructure, I have enjoyed meeting with the mums and dad and talking to companies, playing in the role in making Karratha and Port Hedland a population of 50,000 each.” Mr Grylls said the development taking place in Pilbara towns is due to the Royalties for Regions program. “We are hoping to win more seats in Parliament to continue the drive and passion of the Royalties for Regions program,” he said. “I don’t believe that if another person took over this program, that they would have the same commitment that the Nationals have.
“I’m hoping people can see the commitment that we have had in the region, and see everything that we have done.” He understands that people criticise him for not being from the Pilbara and not living in the electorate. “I have spent a lot of time in the Pilbara, I like to see myself as a local, I have met so many people and now have so many friendships in the region,” he said. “I focus on the liveability of the region, I want to see kids grow up here and seniors to retire here, it is really important to me.” Mr Grylls said he considers the election is a contest and if someone comes along with a better idea and vision for the region, then they should have the seat. “If people want the Royalties for Region program to continue with the same amount of drive, then I need to be elected,” he said. “In the 2013 election, the Pilbara seat will be the most watched election in Australia, and that is because of the work I have done for the town.” Brendon Grylls has been committed to visions such as the Youth Shed, the Pam Buchanan Family Centre, the Karratha Leisure Centre and the Warambie Estate which have proved popular in Karratha.

Labor reaffirms support for Royalties for Regions Labor Leader Mark McGowan has reaffirmed WA Labor’s support for the Royalties for Regions program, saying WA Labor has supported Royalties for Regions from the outset.
“We must ensure taxpayers’ money is spent wisely and strategically on critical projects and infrastructure including roads, not wasted on things like $250,000 singing toilets.”
“We voted in support of the Royalties for Regions Bill in 2009 and will continue to support the program in the future,” he said.
He said there are many important priorities that have been neglected in northwest regions.
Mr McGowan said Labor is determined to stop the wasteful spending of Royalties for Regions funding that has occurred under the Barnett Government and made no apologies for holding the government to account on this issue.
“Regional roads need special attention, as do health services, especially in the State’s north,” he said.
“Royalties for Regions funding should not be spent on political propaganda to boost the National Party’s popularity in regional Western Australia,” he said. “Spending on lip balm, temporary tattoos and key rings is unnecessary and has to stop.
“Furthermore, cost of living pressures are out of control in the Kimberley and the Pilbara. “How can it be that rental costs in places like Port Hedland have increased by 70 per cent since Mr Barnett and Mr Grylls came to power.

Herbie’s apologies
Herbies
After the fantastic response to the first visit of “Herbie’s Fresh Fruit and Veg” in February the truck was back again last week with overwhelming support from the people of Karratha. With their produce coming directly from the growers of the south west of Western Australia, Herbie’s endeavour to provide their customers with the freshest fruit and vegetables available. Unfortunately on this visit a number of people found some of their produce to be lacking quality. Chrissie Allen from Herbie’s said that they were disappointed that this trip some of the fruit we brought to Karratha did not last as long as it should and in some cases not at all. “We understand that many people were frustrated and left dissatisfied with their purchase of predominately the fruit in the mixed fruit boxes,” she said. “We could offer you excuses but the bottom line is the fruit wasn’t up to scratch and for this we are sorry. She went on to say that whilst they can never guarantee 100% that each piece of fruit is perfect inside the lack of quality from this batch of fruit was not acceptable and they apologise for the inconvenience this has caused. Herbie’s would like to assure you that they are looking into their suppliers to ensure that their visit to Karratha on Friday, March 30 and Saturday, March 31 sees them bringing their customers the freshest and best produce available.

• The CARE cleanup team last weekend Clean-Up Australia Day 2012 was marked in the Shire of Roebourne by three major litter clean-ups, sponsored by local Karratha community group CARE. API West Pilbara Iron Ore Project, in partnership with CARE, coordinated cleanups at Anketell Point and Point Samson on March 1 and 2. More than 30 volunteers collected almost 70 bags of rubbish from these two locations, as well as an array of illegally dumped items of rubbish. Nicole Stein, API West Pilbara Iron Ore Project Community Relations Manager, said having only established a presence in Karratha last year the partnership with CARE was a key relationship for the organisation. “We are very proud to have partnered with CARE for the second time to run Clean Up Australia Day events and look forward to continuing the relationship for many years to come,” she said. The cleanup events were a success thanks to the efforts of a number of API West Pilbara Iron Ore staff and contractors, who were joined by more than ten students from the Clontarf Foundation who also volunteered their time to assist. In Karratha, 90 dedicated volunteers collected a staggering 401 bags of rubbish from the verges

This is made possible by the Shire of Roebourne’s ‘Bucks for Bags’ program. The Karratha CARE group’s next cleanup is set to occur in May to coincide with the Shire’s Annual Clean-Up Day.

We on the Council are keen to improve communication between the Shire and you, the people it serves. This is the first of a monthly column where I will try to explain what is behind some of the issues that face us and what we are doing to make this a better place to live.
Public anger has been festering as time drags on and we are deprived of these most basic community resources. Unfortunately, the Shire of Roebourne does not own these facilities.
One of the biggest controversies in the last year has been the fate of the Karratha Community Library and the Walkington Theatre.
While the Shire originally gained the majority of funding for the Theatre from the Arts Council and Woodside (which alone funded one third of the cost), its management was placed in the hands of a committee comprising representatives of the Shire, the Minister for Arts and Karratha College (now the Pilbara Institute).
These two iconic local buildings have been closed for over 12 months due to flooding and/ or mould infection.
This arrangement worked well over the years and the community has greatly appreciated this wonderful facility.
Some time ago the Pilbara Institute determined that the Theatre was not appropriate for a TAFE college and that the Library could be better used for other activities. After the flooding of 2010/11, the Theatre was inexplicably left fully closedup and mould began to proliferate in the dark, airless interior. Mould spread to the adjacent library and it was also closed. After a period of expensive attempts at mould removal the Institute determined this was a good time to withdraw from the long-standing agreement with the Shire and resume the buildings for its own use. Engineers were engaged to provide a report on options for the damaged Walkington
Theatre: we understand eight alternatives were provided, one of which was destruction. Without discussing this with the Shire or even showing the Shire the engineers report, the Institute decided destruction was the best option. So, while the community, through the Shire, was the prime mover for its establishment and has been a 50% funding partner of the theatre since its inception, it has not even been able to obtain a copy of the engineer’s recommendations of repair options. After much lawyering and representations to Government, the Shire has finally obtained a concession from the TAFE to continue use of the Library until we can build our own: a most
welcome reprieve for the town. But to our knowledge, the Institute still wishes to destroy the Walkington Theatre and the Shire has no say in this. The Shire has worked extremely hard to rectify a shocking situation that was not of its making. Your Council is now discussing funding options for a new Civic Centre complex, which would include a town hall, theatre, library, local history and art gallery, but realistically this remains years away. Rest assured we are doing our best: we will re-open the library and we will continue to bring performing arts to the Pilbara.

“The TruCams were set up for about an hour each day over a four day period with approximately 75 percent of the offences being committed by parents coming to pick up their children from school.
However, the TruCam can also be used as a hand held device as well as mounted on a tripod on the side of the road.
“These statistics are alarming and concerning considering these are our kids walking and riding their bikes within these school zones.
Unlike the Multinovas, the TruCam images are available immediately and can be shown to the driver along with the detected speed if pulled over by the Police.
“I implore you to please slow down and adhere to the 40km per hour speed limit during the specified times.
Last week the TruCam was set up in a number of school zones across Karratha and also in built up areas in and around the city centre. Karratha Police Senior Sergeant Anthony Gaskell said that unfortunately, the results were less than impressive for Karratha residents. “There were 118 speeding offences detected in the 40km per hour school zones in the
“I make no apologies whatsoever for setting these devices up in the school zones and I will continue to do so until the message gets through.”

Karratha Leisure Complex construction underway The start of construction for the Karratha Leisure Complex began after a short ceremony recently. The ceremony included Vince Catania and Cr. Fiona White-Hartig unveiling a plaque, commemorating the milestone master plan that will boast top-class facilities. These facilities included a resort-style aquatic precinct complete with children’s splash playground and three swimming pools, multipurpose sports venues including playing fields and clubhouse as well as various indoor and outdoor courts and squash courts. Cr White-Hartig said that well-being and the availability of sport and recreational facilities were highlighted by residents as top priorities in a Community Survey conducted in 2009. “The project design centrealises these facilities in one location and provides easy-access to all residents,” she said. “The Karratha Leisure Complex is set to become the Pilbara’s premier indoor sport and aquatic centre. “The indoor sports hall will also double as an emergency evacuation centre during adverse weather conditions that we experience during cyclone season. “Projects such as this would not be possible
• Cr Fiona White-Hartig and Vince Catania unveiling the plaque without the generous support of a number of partners. “I would like to acknowledge the Australian Government’s Regional Development Australia fund, the State Government’s Royalties for Regions Pilbara Cities Program, the Department of Education and Finbar Group Limited. “The Shire of Roebourne looks forward to working with these partners, as well as Pindan, to deliver this significant project.”
Similarly, there were a further 207 speeding offences detected in the 40 km per hour speed zones predominantly in the Karratha CBD. “These areas also have high pedestrian traffic so please just slow down and obey the speed limits,” he said.

More playground shade for the community
• Cattrall Park is now accessible to the community
Cattrall Park redevelopment nears completion Karratha’s favourite community space, Cattrall Park, is accessible to the public once again. Roebourne Shire Council President Fiona White-Hartig, said that although there were some works still to be completed, the public are now welcome to visit the park to enjoy the new barbeques, improved landscaping and children’s adventure playground. “A number of upgrades have also been made to infrastructure that may not be as noticeable as the children’s playground, upgrades such as the lighting that illuminates the new pathway through the park, and the improved drainage system that will ensure the water flows through the park without pooling after heavy rain,” Councillor White-Hartig said. “These improvements are just as important as the barbeques and landscaping to ensure the longevity of the park.” Cattrall Park is starting to take shape, however works will continue in the coming months to

complete the redevelopment project. “There is a portion of the grass that is currently fenced-off to allow it to better establish, and we ask that people please be mindful of this area for the next few weeks,” Cr White-Hartig said. “The slide in the children’s playground is also off-limits at the moment as it is being replaced. “Signage will be installed around the perimeter of the park to identify the flora and fauna and the history of the naming of the Park. “Due to the harsh Pilbara sun the grass and some of the landscaping is still establishing, however we are confident that in just a few months the park will be in tip-top condition. “When the weather has cooled the Shire will also be look to host an official park opening event,” Cr White-Hartig said. The Cattrall Park redevelopment project is proudly funded by the State Government’s Royalties for Regions Pilbara Cities program and the Shire of Roebourne.
More parks across the community will soon be home to permanent shade structures thanks to the Shire of Roebourne. In 2011, permanent playground shades were installed at a number of parks across the Shire and now six more parks will receive the same treatment. Playgrounds at Kevin Richards Memorial Oval Park (Millars Well), Brolga Meander Park (Nickol West), Goshawk Circle Park (Nickol West) and the Nickol West Skate Park (Nickol West), Tambrey Park (Tambrey Estate) and Hampton Beach (Dampier) will each be home to permanent shade structures at the completion of the project. The construction and installation of new permanent shade structures at the three parks in Nickol West, one in Tambrey Estate and one in Millars Well is proudly funded by the Shire of Roebourne and LandCorp through the Regional Development Assistance Program. The permanent shade structure at Hampton Beach is proudly funded by Rio Tinto as part of its communities programme. Roebourne Shire Council President Fiona White-Hartig, said the project would help achieve the Shire’s key goal relating to communities. “It is our ongoing goal to further develop and maintain our infrastructure and facilities to create aesthetically attractive and liveable towns which will develop into more diverse and balanced communities,” Ms White- Hartig said. The structures will be constructed in two stages, with Kevin Richards Memorial Oval, Brolga Meander and Goshawk Circle Parks to be completed first and work to start on Tambrey, Hampton Beach and Nickol West Skate Parks second. It is anticipated that each stage will take approximately eight weeks to construct, with the project scheduled for completion at the end of April. Throughout these works, there may be times where access to the playgrounds involved is limited to the public. “We appreciate your patience and cooperation as we undertake these works,” Ms WhiteHartig said.

Helping hands at Herbies
Red Dog is an insult
I would like to send out a huge “thank you” to the very kind lady who helped me with my twins at Herbies Fruit and Veg Truck on Friday, March 2.
I went to see the UK Release of “Red Dog”.
Without your help I would have had to leave empty handed, and my kids would have missed out on all the lovely fresh fruit and vegies. Your help was very much appreciated. Joanne Emery
The film is a travesty. What it has done for reality, Dampier and “Red Tally”, the original “Pilbara Wanderer” is akin to doing a film about Sydney, and portraying the “Opera House” as a portakabin on Coogee beach. This film is an insult to all of Dampier; especially those who had close ties to “Red Tally” in the 70s. I’m surprised the filmproducers didn’t portray “Red
Dog” as a Budgie; they got everything else so wrong they may just as well have gone the whole hog. Three words best describe this film – CR%A~P, C~RA#P AND UTTER C#RAP – yes that is five words but not to the morons who produced this rubbish. Attempting to convert a factual story into a Comic Western didn’t work; only a Brain-Dead disease, or should I say a team of them, thought it might. Well fellas it didn’t work – might-be best if you never ever make another film. Dampier resident 1974 and 1975. Stan Divis
Thank you Mr Grylls How refreshing to see a politician who is willing to take a risk for the good of regional WA. As a Karratha resident, I have seen how Royalties for Regions has changed the town and region. Things that people elsewhere in the State take for granted like underground power and housing, are now taking shape in the Pilbara. The region still needs more attention and with Mr Grylls as the local member I think we will have a good chance. Thank you Mr Grylls for taking a gamble to represent the Pilbara. Peter Waters

Community Update Millars Well & Bulgarra residents – work is underway
• Allan Pollock at Head of Time
Allan perfects his skills
O’Donnell Griffin, the contractor undertaking the works, is progressing in Bulgarra and Millars Well. The first changeover from overhead power to underground took place on 16 August in Viveash Way and to date 118 properties in Karratha have been undergrounded.
Impact on you The external cables between the front boundary to the meter box, and along the street verge will be installed using underground drilling or open trenching. The contractor will door knock before work on private property commences. You will be notified when access into your yard is required. If your switchboard is inside your house, access into your house will be required. All verges and work areas are recorded before work commences so they can be repaired to a similar standard after the work takes place. Care will be taken at all times to minimise the impact of this work on your property. However, some disruptions to verges and front gardens will occur. At the different stages of work, there may be an interruption to your power supply for up to four hours. You will be notified at least three days prior. In the event of a yellow cyclone alert all open excavations are backfilled. We assure you of our commitment to carry out work with as little impact on property owners and occupiers as possible. up on his techniques. “The approach is hands-on and practical which I find useful,” he said. “I’ve always found that in hairdressing, you learn by doing. “The support I get from my lecturer, Emmaleen Korosec, is also quite valuable.” He adds that he learns a lot from being around other apprentices. “We tend to share our methods and learn from each other,” Allan said. “It’s also inspiring to be around other apprentices who are pursuing a career in the same field.” With just under two years to go, Allan confirms that everything is going as planned. He is looking forward to working in Karratha as a qualified hairdresser for a year to continue to develop his skills. “After that, I would like to take my skills overseas,” Allan added with a twinkle in his eye. “I would like to work in Italy, the UK and maybe Greece and continue to progress in the field. “Who knows? I might even end up doing hair for the fashion runway!”

Hairdressing apprentices are thoroughly enjoying their twoweek blocks at Pilbara Institute’s Karratha campus. Apprentices, as far away as Broome, Tom Price and Port Hedland, have been coming to the Karratha campus all year to pursue a career in hairdressing. Karratha-born Allan Pollock is one of those hopefuls. Already displaying advanced skills in cutting and colouring as a second year apprentice; 17 year-old Allan is steadily perfecting his craft both at his place of employment at Head of Time and at the Institute. “I would like to really develop my skills in cutting,” Allan said. “It’s a side of hairdressing that I would really like to master.” A career in hairdressing came to Allan by chance. “I did two weeks’ work experience at Head of Time and I really enjoyed it,” he said. “I realised that I was quite adept with the scissors so I committed to an apprenticeship and haven’t looked back since.” Allan looks forward to his twoweek blocks at Pilbara Institute. He uses his time well polishing
The Pilbara Underground Power Project (PUPP) is a partnership between the Government of Western Australia (through Pilbara Cities) and Local Government Authorities, delivered by Horizon Power. The project aims to provide cyclone affected Northwest towns with a safe and reliable power supply, replacing ageing overhead electricity infrastructure with underground networks.

Audience left in stitches By Courtney Bertling The Big HOO-HAA! had the audience at the Walkington Amphitheatre in stitches when the two teams of fearless comedians came to town on Wednesday, March 7. The two teams, the Hearts and the Bones had to battle it out on stage, creating comedy sketches on the spot, in the style of Whose Line Is It Anyway and Thank God You’re Here. Armed with only audience suggestions and a handful of props, they left no song unsung, no joke undelivered and no pun unpunished in their mad dash for the punch line. Karratha was the first stop on the tour with Sean and Ben on the Hearts team and Andrea and Nick on the Bones team and over a number of rounds, the audience had to pick who would win the trophy. In the first round, the guys, and lady, had to re-write the song ‘Da Doo Ron, Ron’ with people’s names that were suggested by the audience. Slowly, Andrea, Ben and Sean were voted off because their lines did not rhyme or were plain, not funny. Nick was the last one standing, giving the Bones team the first five points for the evening. In round two, love was in the air with Nick and Sean in
desperate need to find a loved one in the Pilbara. The audience had to come up with adjectives that described Nick and Sean’s princess, which then Andrea and Ben had to act out from the boys to guess. In the end, according to the audience, Nick was in need for a big nosed, check out chick that loves long walks on the beach, and Sean (who guessed all three and won the second round) wanted a lady who was bodacious, a crocodile hunter and who loved ham radios. In round three, the comedians had to play ‘Blind Line’, which proved to be one of the most popular rounds. The audience had to come up with six sayings, two song lyrics, two movie quotes, a dodgy Pilbara pickup line and a bad health slogan. Andrea, Ben and Sean were then giving two sayings, and without looking at them until they were going to say them, they had to act out a scene inspired by audience member Dan Pederson, called Dan’s Pants. The three went on an adventure with Andrea being Dan and Ben and Sean always getting their pants stolen from ‘Dan’. Sean soon became a lady whose eyes Ben described as the ‘Stairway to Heaven’ whenever he looked into them.
And as the scene closed, Dan left the stage with one final saying aimed at Lady Sean, ‘I’ll have what she’s having’. During the interval, members of the audience were asked to write a joke starting with ‘what is the difference between fishing and a first date’. Amy Pederson won the best joke with her ‘hook, line and sinker’ punch line. In the other rounds, the audience saw the comedians acting out a foreign film where Andrea and Sean were fluent in jibberish. Sean proved that swearing is still funny during the round of ‘Sing About It’ and the Karratha Ice Hockey team travelling to Port Hedland were given a new theme song. Andrea gave twisted and creepy a whole new meaning in her skit with the little girl and Uncle Cleveland and Ben aka David, killed his wife Abby with his shameful S*&^. By the end of the night the points were extremely close, but there could only be one winner, which went to the Bones team with 32 points and the Hearts on 30. The Big HOO-HAA! proved to be a night of live comedy where the audience could forget their troubles were laughing out loud from start to finish.

Local Indigenous artists to showcase their talent Indigenous artists from Northern Western Australia have the chance to showcase their artwork to the nation by entering the 29th Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award. All Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists can submit their works for the chance to win the major $40,000 cash prize and increase their national profile. Telstra Country Wide Local Area General Manager, WA North, Tony Carmichael, said this was a fantastic opportunity for local artists to put their best work forward. “Each year we see such a remarkable display of artworks entered into the Award, from detailed barks to intricate canvases,” he said. “The permanent inclusion of the Telstra New Media Award has brought a new dimension to the Award, creating an avenue for artists using innovative
technology to share their work with the nation.” In 2012 the Telstra Art Award celebrates its 29th year and is Australia’s longest running art award dedicated to the work of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists. MAGNT Director, Pierre Arpin, is at the helm of the Awards for his second year running and said he was looking forward to seeing this year’s entries. “On the eve of the 30th anniversary of this exhibition, we are thrilled to launch this call for entries,” he said. “This year, we are hoping to see a rich and diverse representation of work produced by artists from around the country.” Last year’s Award attracted more than 320 entries from Indigenous artists across Australia, with 61 artists selected as finalists, creating an
exciting visual exhibition. The prize pool for the 29th Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award comprises the major $40,000 Telstra Award and the following five categories: • $4000 Telstra General Painting Award • $4000 Telstra Bark Painting Award • $4000 Telstra Work on Paper Award • $4000 Wandjuk Marika Memorial 3D Award (also sponsored by Telstra) • $4000 Telstra New Media Award For an entry form contact the Exhibition Coordinator at the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory by phone 08 8999 8203, email natsiaa@ nt.gov.au, or visit www.nt.gov. au/natsiaa. Entries close on March 16, 2012.
FAMILY GUY SEASON 11
By Courtney Bertling Family Guy really has gone that one step further, with viewers asking the question: “Are Fox purposely trying to get the show cancelled… again?” A pop culture phenomenon, Family Guy Season 11 features 14 episodes from the most controversial season yet. For a show that has been cancelled numerous times, for Fox to reach season 11, it is quite an impressive goal. I saw myself in stitches from laughing, but also in shock with how far they pushed the limits of television. In the season, Peter’s love of alcohol lands him a kidney transplant; Stewie and Brian travel to the North Pole to kill Santa and Chris starts a new hobby with a Germany Nazi. Throughout the season, just like any other, there is crude humour, political incorrectness, casual racism, misogyny, celebrity satire,
pop culture jibes and more profanity than an animated show should ever have. However, the downside to the show is repetition, season 11 does become somewhat predictable (coming from someone who has watched every episode of every season, you understand which direction the gags will go). Although predictable, it is still funny. During one of the episodes, a sizeable chunk is taken up by a screening of David Bowie and Mick Jagger’s 'Dancing in the Streets' music video, which I didn’t mind, dancing along, understanding the mockery Peter implies. You will see guest appearances from Ashley Tisdale, Drew Barrymore, David Boreanaz , and many more. Season 11 delivers more of the rude, crude, and over-the-top humour that
fans have grown to love and comes loaded with exclusive, never-before-seen extras, including extra-rude extended episodes, hilarious deleted scenes, and clips to go. And if this release of season 11 proves anything, it’s that the Family Guy formula isn’t worn out yet and within 10 minutes of pressing play, I wondered to myself how the producers were going to outdo themselves in season 12.

Junior doctor increase in regional WA A contribution of $8.5million of Royalties for Regions funding will assist with increasing the number of positions for junior doctors in major regional hospitals across Western Australia, including Port Hedland. Wendy Duncan, Member for Mining and Pastoral Region said the State Government has provided
$27million towards the junior doctor positions in regional areas, with an additional $8.5million contributed through Royalties for Regions. The Rural Practice Pathway provides better access to training in regional areas and is a career pathway for junior doctors wishing to train for a full year in regional areas. It provides assistance for
doctors to continue working in regional areas after they have completed their prevocational training. The RPP will this year see the junior doctor training positions increase to 83 participants, up from 25 participants four years ago. “This is a fantastic result and indicates the strength of the programs in place to teach
and support our junior doctor trainees in regional settings,” said Ms. Duncan. “The RPP program underpins the values of what Royalties for Regions is all about; having a long term focus on regional development where services are improved and benefits are retained for our regional communities.”

Upgrades for remote Aboriginal health clinics At least six health clinics in remote Aboriginal communities are set to be upgraded, thanks to a $22.2million funding injection under the LiberalNational Government’s Royalties for Regions program. WA Minister for Health, Dr Kim Hames said the Remote Indigenous Health Clinics initiative would result in improvements to the delivery of health services in Aboriginal communities including Bayulu, Mulan, Mindibungu (Billiluna), Wakathuni and Noonkanbah (Yungngora). Dr Hames said the project would improve health outcomes and address health inequities in remote Aboriginal communities. “This initiative will see the replacement of sub-standard clinic infrastructure and eliminate the forced closure of clinics due to health and safety concerns,” he said. “Access to quality primary health care services is crucial to the improvement of indigenous health and is essential in order to successfully and sustainably close the gap in life expectancy.” Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls said the project would adopt culturally appropriate clinic designs to encourage community members to utilise the upgraded facilities. “A major consideration for Royalties for Regions is providing supplementary investment to Government agencies to improve service delivery to communities,” Mr Grylls said. “The agencies involved are working with the communities to ensure each clinic best addresses each community’s health priorities.” The project will be managed by the WA Country Health Service with works commencing immediately and continuing through 2012 and 2013.
pilbaraecho www.pilbaraecho.com.au
Member for North West, Vincent Catania MLA congratulated Pilbara Community Legal Services for
their dedication to the strategy of reducing the rate of suicide in WA, which is best achieved by everyone working together and learning how to recognise the signs. “It is so important that everyone in the community joins the pledge to tackle suicide,” he said. Mr Catania urged other organisations in the North West to share the vision by signing a pledge and recognising the importance of suicide prevention.

Public Notice Public access closed to Karratha tank site and Lookout – 24 March to September 2012
The Water Corporation has commenced works to improve the security and reliability of water supply to Karratha through main and tank upgrade works. Stage one works included duplicating 2.95 kilometres of water main on Stovehill Road and Karratha Road which was completed by September 2011. Stage two of this project will commence on 24 March 2012 which includes the refurbishment of the Karratha Tank 1 located at the Lookout near the Visitor Centre, and associated interconnection works on Karratha Road. Works are expected to be completed by September 2012. Due to heavy machinery, increased traffic, demolition and construction works, the Water Corporation is going to close vehicle access to the single lane track next to the Karratha Visitor Centre and the Lookout site for safety reasons. As this is a popular tourist site and walking track, we are endeavouring to allow pedestrian access to the site where possible. During periods where the contractor is off site, we will open up public and vehicle access as long as the site is safe to do so. For further information or if you are aware of any events in this area throughout this period, please contact Narelle D’amico, Project Manager on 9186 8246.

As most of you were aware last September I (Callum Stowell) participated in the Kimberly 100.
I have set up a dedicated account for the girls, and kicked things off by donating $1000.00 to the cause. Please give generously. These girls have a long road ahead of them. It has been 6 Months since the race and both are not expected to return to work within the next 2 years.
A 100km Ultra Marathon in the Kimberly that was cut short as bush fires affected the course. Unfortunately several participants were caught up in the fires, in particular Turia Pitt & Kate Sanderson were left with burns covering up to 80% of their bodies and fighting for their lives under induced comas in intensive care.
Please help me support these girls. On the 24th of March I will be participating in the Northburn 100. This is a 100 Mile Ultra Marathon located in Central Otago New Zealand. (A rugged mountainous area in the centre of the South Island) I am dedicating this Race to Turia & Kate. These strong young girls have been through a tremendous amount of suffering and will continue to battle with the result of their injuries for the rest of their lives. Kate & Turia are both in the rehabilitation units of their respective hospitals as they continue the long road to recovery. Although out of danger, everyday they tirelessly persevere with their recovery and put bluntly both face a life-time of disability and disfigurement.

The Karratha BMX club riders have been working hard since December to prepare for the WA BMX State Titles held in Bunbury this weekend. Our 2011 season finished in November, but 25 dedicated riders have been training three times a week over summer to ensure they perform their best in Bunbury. The training has had the riders completing sprints, fine tuning their start techniques and getting around corners 4 abreast. Daniel Sprague, an elite rider/ coach came to Karratha to put the

far the most notable of the night. After missing the club night the week before, five-year-old Indiana Bushby ensured she kept up with the remainder of the family, clocking two impressive seven second PBs. Another youngster performing well was seven-year-old Jed Norris who took almost four seconds off his 50m backstroke. Shaela Doherty also impressed in the backstroke event with a 2.91 second PB. Six swimmers nominated for the 100m butterfly, with all competitors swimming superbly.

Swimmers smash PB’s By Janine Wain The Karratha Amateur Swimming Club commenced their new online registration procedure recently. The process involves swimmers and parents being responsible for their own registration and swim selections each week. Club recorder Maree Fowke oversaw the introduction of the process, and with the help of newly trained Judy Driver, they ensured it ran smoothly. The club night began with the 50m breaststroke, where Barra squad member Nino Antonucci slashed his previous time by 6.55 seconds. He then managed to slash a further ten seconds off his 100m time. Fellow squad members Jack Clarke and Ben Watts also performed well, with Clarke in his favoured stroke, taking an impressive 3.92 seconds off his 50m and 2.73 off his 100m swim.
Watts smashed his 100m time by 12.17 seconds. Other squads also saw enormous improvements in breaststroke, with Jeremy Goh and Emily Krueger clocking in 10 seconds faster.
Allanah Baxter and Macie Bennetts were separated by less than half a second, with Baxter touching the wall first. Bennetts recorded a two second PB and is now only a second off the club record. Nine and 10-year-old Keldon Wain, Mikaela Wilson and Marni Taylor all gained their first time for the event, with Wilson and Wain closing in on their age records too. Lily Moore also smashed her previous time by more than 10 seconds.
Seja McCarthy, Euan Cameron, Lily Moore and Molly Bozanich also achieved good PBs in the breaststroke.
Not to be outdone, younger sister Finlay smashed her 50m butterfly time, taking almost five seconds off.
In the 50m freestyle, seven-year-old Kahlan Bunter performed exceptionally well, taking over 10 seconds off.
Other outstanding butterfly PBs were achieved by Ziggi McCarthy, Georgina and Courtney Bushby, Isobel Norris and Laken Wain.
He also managed an impressive PB in the backstroke. Seja McCarthy and Jeremy Goh once again performed well in the 50m freestyle. The 100m freestyle saw fantastic improvements from Bella Castorina, Jacynta Felix, Isobel Norris, Ross Rann, Ben Watts and Erin Shaylor. However, the 27-second improvement by Ziggi McCarthy was by
With the generous help and sponsorship from local business, this weekend KASC will send 22 of its swimmers to Collie to compete in the 53rd Annual Country Pennants last weekend. With over 30 clubs competing in over 500 events on the weekend, more personal best times are almost inevitable.

The Karratha Netball Association committee is working hard with preparations for the upcoming Ladies Winter Season 2012. Even though the first game of the season isn’t until April 30, there is still plenty to do. We have already hosted a Netball Information Night and held open trials for players wishing to get into teams. If you are keen to play netball but don’t have a team and missed the trials, please email your name, phone number, date of birth, preferred playing position (goals, centre court or defence) and a brief playing history (when/where and what division you last played) to kna.secretary@gmail.com. We will add your details to the ‘Players Looking for Teams’ list, which will be emailed out to all of the team contacts after the AGM. This list includes senior, junior and sub junior players. We are having our Annual General Meeting on March 19 where all teams wishing to play this year must have two representatives attending and must submit their team nomination form in order to be included on the fixtures. In an endeavor to improve umpiring across the board and to entice more umpires to gain accreditation, we will once again be having a compulsory Level One umpiring course. Two representatives from senior and junior teams and one from sub junior teams must attend this course. There are three choices of sessions to choose from - dates, times and venue are listed on the KNA website - www.karrathanetball. asn.au. Broome are hosting the Summit Homes North West Netball Championships this year over the June 17/18 weekend. KNA will be holding trials for junior and
senior athletes on March 26 and 28. There will be an information session for successful athletes on March 30 as well. More details are on the KNA website. Teams representing Karratha are Division 1, Division 2, Masters (35yo+), 16U, 14U and 12U. If you are interested in being a team manager or coach for one of these teams, please contact Jess at kna.nwc@gmail.com. A goal of KNA in 2012 is to accredit more coaches and as such have invited Tracey Swami, ex West Coast Fever Player and Regional Association Development Officer for the North West, will be in Karratha on the May 5/6 Weekend to present the Development (May 5) and Foundation (May 6) Coaching Courses as well as run a Player Development Workshop for our NW Champs juniors (May 6 during the Foundations Coaching Course). The venue and times are to be advised. Tracey is a fantastic presenter and we are very luck to have her come along to present these courses so would encourage all budding coaches to come along. The Foundation Coaching Course (FCC) is designed for beginner and club coaches and KNA would especially encourage all of our subjunior and junior coaches to attend. The Development Coaching Course is the next level and the FCC accreditation is a prerequisite of this course. Please email kna.secretary@gmail.com or visit http://netballwa.com.au for more information and prerequisites regarding these courses. Feel free to browse the KNA website - it is packed with information for the upcoming year. Also, Cougars Netball Club are in need of A Grade Defenders, anyone wishing to try out can contact myself at kna.president@gmail.com.

April Fool’s Day Pilbara boxers to take Triathlon on WA Tournament It is time to dust off your joggers, find your goggles and put on your helmet, as the Newman Triathlon is occurring on April 1, 2012. Newman Aquatic Centre Pool Manager Andrew Price and Community Paramedic Chris Hopkins have both competed previously in triathlons and swimming events held locally and in major cities, plus fitness instructors Nicki Dinka and Wendy Hagan will be offering health and training advice via newsletters and workshops. This will include education on event preparation, injury prevention, healthy nutrition and improving your techniques. “We want to promote health, wellbeing and a community spirit in a fun and interactive way.” said Wendy Hagan, who as well as being a qualified fitness instructor is the Newman Healthy Communities Project Officer for WA Country Health Service. To ensure everyone has the opportunity to participate, the Newman Triathlon will consist of individual and team events for juniors, adults and a new division called Tri Hard. The Tri Hard division is a reduced adult course. This course and the original length course will allow beginners and everyone of all fitness levels to enter and be part of this exciting event. The 2012 triathlon event will also highlight the upgrades from the Newman Tomorrow project and the splendor of the revamped town centre. The running and cycle routes will be mapped out so entrants will have the opportunity to train on the actual course prior to the event and take advantage of the improved bike and cycle track surfaces. Shire of East Pilbara acting CEO
Sian Appleton said they want to promote health, wellbeing and a community spirit in a fun and interactive way. “This event is a good way to do just that, and to showcase the facilities we have here in Newman,” she said. “Being active, having a sense of place, belonging and a purpose, is a good way to positively contribute to one’s happiness and mental wellbeing.” The running and cycle routes of the event have already been released so willing participants have had the opportunity to train on the actual course prior to the April Fool’s Day event. “This event is making use of the improved walking and cycle tracks, which have been upgraded by the Shire of East Pilbara during the previous 12 months” said Ms Appleton. All money raised from the event will be donated to the various volunteer emergency services based in Newman. Entry is $10 per person and forms are now available at the Newman Aquatic Centre, Newman Recreation Centre and the St. John Ambulance. All money raised from entry fees will be donated to the volunteered Newman Emergency Services. Any business or community groups that would like to be involved with the 2012 Healthway Newman Triathlon can contact Wendy Hagan at Newman Population Health on 9175 8316, Andrew Price at the Newman Aquatic Centre on 9175 2145 or Nicki Dinka at the Newman Recreation Centre on 9177 8075. Funding donations, resource assistance and volunteers for the event will be greatly appreciated.

“The Easternwell Community Grants program has allowed small groups, like our club, access to funding where normally we would slip through the cracks.”
Easternwell, Australia’s leading integrated energy and mining services provider, launched the Easternwell Community Grants program in August to provide financial and social assistance across the country in the areas of community, education, health, indigenous, safety training and youth. Easternwell’s CEO Troy Campbell said the ECG program is one way that his company can connect with its local communities. “We are committed to helping organisations across Australia, particularly in the Pilbara region and hope funding provided to Karratha Badminton Club will help them to provide lasting benefits to the local community,” he said. Applications for the next round of ECG will open on 23 February 2012. Eligible groups may apply for funding up to $2,000. For more information visit www.easternwell. com.au/ourcommunity.

Raiders prove they are the Pilbara warriors By Margaret Bertling In a dusty yard tucked away in the Karratha LIA, the music of ACDC booms from a tin shed and the ominous sounds of thumps and grunts punctuate the still air. It’s not the scene of an Arnie movie, but something even more perplexing is going on behind the tin walls which begs the question... why on a hot Pilbara night would one punish their body for the love of… boxing? No fans or air cons for these Spartan warriors, they are just grateful to have a boxing ring set up so they can master their craft of perfect contact and peak fitness and I tell you, these athletes are FIT. The man behind the gruelling workouts is Karratha’s Shane MacDonald. He greets me with a firm handshake, this muscly big hulk of a man; a perfectly fit fighting machine with the gentle glint in his eye that and a broad welcoming smile. And he stands tall and proud, telling his story of a chance meeting with a Karratha businessman who extended a generous hand so a few blokes could punch bags and then each other a few nights a week. Well, perhaps not exactly like that… Moving to Karratha from Brisbane last May, MacDonald went from training in the sport
he loves [boxing] for up to five hours a day to working a four on four off shift. “I had to do something with my time,” he said. There were no facilities for boxing, a sport he is indeed very good at, so he went to find the former coach of the boxing club but ran into Ken Sully, owner of Austep Pty Ltd. “He gave me this half of this shed, it [boxing] wouldn’t be going right now if he didn’t give it (space) to us and he doesn’t charge us a cent,” said MacDonald, who had tried everything to search for suitable premises to house a boxing ring prior to Mr Sully’s offer. Setting up the club, Macdonald secured some welcome funding from the Shire of Roebourne and dipped into his own pocket. He is slowly recouping his personal outlay through memberships, which have gone from zero to 40 in 10 months. “We’ve got two lots of classes now and we have ages from 13 – to 43 in both sexes,” he said. “I’ve got a couple of girls who want to compete who are in my class, they are not quite up to that standard yet, but they’re getting there,” he said with a smile. MacDonald set his Raiders Cub up with membership of $300 for three months or casual fee of $8 per class.
• Shane MacDonald first opened the Raiders in the Pilbara 18 months ago “We do a program for 12 weeks and you want to continue on you pay again, if not I have a website where people sign a membership and I contact the next person on the list and offer them a spot, or they come out and see what we do,” he said. Asked by the whimpy journo if people actually get hurt “playing’ this sport, MacDonald was quick to point out it’s all smoke and mirrors whilst admitting competitors are actually aiming to punch their opponent in the head as they score points in a round over a few minutes.
“I used to box and do rugby league and I always got hurt more playing rugby league than did than I ever did in boxing,” he said.
weekend.
“When you look at it we are trying to hit each other in the head but honestly I never got any injuries compared to rugby league.
“I like to think I am a tough coach, I think my members respect me rather than fear me.
Macdonald is a task master with his classes about fitness, skill and discipline and he takes pride in coaching boxers to Tournament level with two if his charges competing in Boxing WA tournament in Perth this
Raiders trains each week night with an invitation to new members to visit their premises at 1520 Pyramid road in the Karratha LIA or check out more info at www.karrathaboxingclub. com.
“I try to accommodate for fitness but also for those who want to go further in the sport,” he said.
“It’s not a bad way to spend a Friday night.”
