New land release provides more housing Minister Brendon Grylls visited South Hedland on 18 January to announce that South Hedland will soon be able to benefit from the development of 47 hectares of land which will be used to provide affordable housing for not-for-profit organisations.

Delivered under the State Government Royalties for Regions and the Pilbara Cities Program, Minister Brendon Grylls said that the new land release was aimed at notfor-profit organisations that have struggled to attract and maintain staff due to the high house and land prices.

The housing will

accommodate key workers and indigenous people.

“The Stage 2 South Hedland release will go a long way to ensuring notfor-profit organisations are able to provide important social and community services to the people of South and Port Hedland,” Mr Grylls said.

“One of the biggest issues they face is undoubtedly the ability to secure affordable accommodation.

“The aim is to ensure communities can be sustainable in the long term.

“Accessible accommodation is essential if we are to achieve the Pilbara Cities vision of transform-

ing towns such as this into vibrant, diverse and wellserviced communities.”

The successful not-forprofit proponents for the development component of the Stage Two Land Release are Foundation Housing Ltd who are granted 16 dwellings comprising a mix of detached houses and group dwellings; YMCA of Perth Inc. who are granted 14 dwellings comprising a mix of one, two and three bedroom units; and Youth Involvement Council Inc. -who are granted three dwellings comprising a three bedroom house and two, three bedroom duplexes.

Wastewater relocated for residential development On 18 January Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls and Water Minister Bill Marmion unveiled a $106million project to relocate the Port Hedland Wastewater Treatment Plant, giving space for the development of 2,500 new residential dwellings.

Mr Grylls explained that the freeing up of 75ha on the East Port Hedland site for residential development was among the most significant announcements yet in the State Government’s Pilbara Cities vision.

Funded through the State Government’s Royalties for Regions Program and the Water Corporation’s Capital Works Program, Brendon Grylls stated that this major relocation project was particularly significant because the development potential in this area of Port Hedland had been constrained by the treatment plant’s location.

“It is clearly directed at addressing future housing affordability and availability and

will go a long way to assisting in projected growth for the town and region,” he said.

“A recent assessment confirmed that housing demand significantly exceeds supply and there was a need to increase supply both in the near future and in the longer term.

“There is no doubt that the relocation of the Port Hedland Wastewater Treatment Plant will, within a relatively short timeframe, open up a major new housing estate.

“This project should have a lasting impact on the cost of housing in the area and the new development is consistent with the State Government’s Pilbara Cities framework.”

Water Minister Bill Marmion explained that they had considered many options for the relocation of the plant, until the decision was made to combine it with the South Hedland Waterwaste Treatment Plant, which would undergo a substantial upgrade.

“The estimated

“The Port Hedland land will not be available until after the completion of rehabilitation work, but providing potential developers with this mid-2014 timeframe means development applications within the plant’s buffer zone can be approved in the near future, easing a major constraint to developers.

wastewater removal and treatment is to upgrade the South Hedland facilities to cater for growth through to the mid-2030s.

“The relocation of the Port Hedland plant provides a practical example of how the corporation has been able to work within the Pilbara Cities framework to open up a sizeable portion of land for housing development right on Port Hedland’s doorstep.”

Mr Grylls said the Government would now undertake planning and due diligence works to establish how best the site could be utilised.

I’ll let the words do the talking here.

Suffice to say, for all you kids on holidays at home with your folks – handle them with care!

Plastic Fantastic It’s a stinky Pilbara Sunday, but the pool’s got a leak and grown mould and the kids are ratty and the house is tatty with the toy debris untold.

And Dad’s out sorting the chlorine and Mum’s channel surfing again, as the floods keep racing through each station; when’s it going to end, oh when?

Well, Kitty who’s five she’s onto it.

Got her plastic stethoscope on.

Little Em who’s two grabs the bandaids too and they’re out like the wind, long gone.

Peace, thinks mum, my work is done and chaos, it will keep.

Head like flotsam, stress forgotten, off she drifts to sleep...

‘No, sorry kids, no cartoons, no DVDs or X-thing.’

‘I’m bored,’ whines one. ‘Go and make some fun!

Get a job, bake a cake, buy bling.’

‘But me just three,’ spurts the little one.

‘And I’m only five,’ chimes the other.

‘Your point?’ she repliesas she sighs to the skies and closes her eyes…oh brother.

But something smells like mystery when two hours on she’s awake.

Everything’s quiet - where’s the riot?

This has got to be a mistake.

And there they are. All four kids.

Sitting at the table in fits.

Staring at mum thinking this is fun and she’s totally confused to bits.

And there she lies on the couch.

Been a long hard day anywho.

Stripped beds done shopping with a price tag whopping, scrubbed the shower and the tub and the loo.

Then it’s ‘Ow!’ Number three is shrieking from the bottom of the old gum tree and the fourth races in and she’s grinning like sin, chanting, ‘Jax, he’s grazed his knee!’

‘Share, the lot of you, cherubs.

Spit it out now, toot sweet.’

‘Nothing Mum. Just a bit of fun.’

With a giggle and a chuckle and a tweet.

‘Whatever,’ waves mum and out she trots, ‘I’m off to have a bath.’

Next they hear is the shriek. Oh dear.

Is she mad? And then her laugh…

And it fills the house with heartbeats.

And it makes the flowers grow.

And it sings like a sparrow down the hallway narrow like a gift and…wouldn’t you know.

There stands mum before them again, covered from head to shoes in bandaids, plastic, how fantastic, laughing like there’s nothing to lose.

‘Thank you all, my darlings!

You’ve patched my weary soul.’

And they race like thugs for a big group hug, which more than achieves the goal.

The Pilbara Writers’ Group will be holding its first meeting for the year on Thursday 3 February.

The group meets on the first Thursday of the month at Karratha Arts and Learning Centre, Richardson Way, Bulgarra, from 7-9pm.

Members run workshops and provide feedback to their peers in a supportive atmosphere.

All community members interested in writing, including emerging and established writers are welcome to attend.

The group is a positive way for writers to give and receive encouragement to fellow writers.

Get physical and Walk it in Hedland Grab a bargain at Port Hedland’s flood fundraiser 2011 marks the third year of the Walk it Hedland Corporate and Community Challenge and the Town of Port Hedland are inviting all organisations and community groups to save the date and prepare their teams with nominations now open until 4 February 2011.

The challenge will be held from 14 February to 18 March 2011.

The Walk it Hedland Corporate and Community Challenge is an event whereby teams are nominated to complete as much physical activity over a period of five weeks.

activities carried out and throughout the challenge a number of fitness programs will be hosted whereby teams can earn an extra 50 points for participation.

At the end of the challenge the team with the most points will be declared the winner.

The five week challenge was held last year and was a great success with 26 local teams entering.

This year they would like to make the challenge even bigger and better!

The challenge is FREE to enter and there will be a number of prizes and giveaways.

When artists and creative types first come to Hedland one of the things they need to know is where can you get art supplies.

Chatting to other artists is one way of getting this information but here is an overview of what I know is out there.

Kmart has a fabulous range of scrapbooking and kids craft supplies.

It also has a limited range of art supplies but sometimes the basics are just enough to tide you over, or if you are a beginner they are a great place to start.

As with most things Kmart is also pretty cost effective.

Hedland Emporium has a good range of art, craft and scrapbooking supplies.

It might not have everything in stock you want but generally it has something close.

However, it can be on the costly side, so if making

As many Hedland residents may know, local Evita Wilson had planned a clothing fundraiser for Ovarian Cancer Research.

However due to recent events and catastrophic consequences that the people of Queensland are now facing from the flooding, Evita Wilson has decided that it is best to send the funds that they raise to help out our fellow Australian’s.

The news of the floods has devastated people from all over the world as we have listened to reports about many victims losing everything including their homes and cars and even loved ones.

The clothing fundraiser will be held at The All Seasons Hotel, Port Hedland between 9am and 4pm.

If you would like to donate clothes, you can either drop them off at Jan Ford Real Estate or arrange a pick up with Evita by simply calling or texting 0403 757 212.

All money raised from the sale of clothing will be banked with Big Sky and BHP Billiton will eventually match every dollar for dollar as funds are collected.

Everything will range from $5 to $50 so come and grab a bargain.

All clothing and items that are not sold will be sent through directly to the people in Grantham and surrounding suburbs and disbursed by the people within the Disaster Relief Programmes in operation.

Art Supplies in Hedland

Jacksons Drawing Supplies are based everywhere but Hedland.

Well this is a big exaggeration of course but they have several shops in Perth, one in the more major towns from Geraldton heading south, and recently they have opened shops in Darwin and Alice Springs.

They used to have a wonderful website where you could see all the stock and prices but they are updating their website, so now ordering involves a bit more guess work until the new site is ready.

In the meantime they have lovely staff who are prepared to talk you through orders on the phone or email you answers to any questions, and trust me when I say they are very patient.

One thing that is confusing about Jacksons

is that they have a few different price lists – schools for example get catalogues and if you manage to get your hands on one of these and you are busy drooling your way through it, just remember that the prices in there are not the prices you will pay if you are an individual ordering over the phone.

Because I am buying on an ongoing basis I have actually set up an account with them and it is all too easy – just a quick email, the stuff comes in the post ASAP and then I just have to remember to pay the bill the following month.

There are plenty of other art supplies websites out there as well and the one or two I have ordered stuff through have been fine.

An issue with any online shopping is the postage delay which can be extremely frustrating if you are halfway through something and also if what you receive isn’t really what you are after – it always pays to check the return policy before making the

purchase.

Australia Post occasionally have some good art supplies – recently all the TAFE people were stocking up on mini easels that Australia Post were selling at bargain rates.

Finally one of my favourite places, The Courthouse Gallery, doesn’t stock art supplies but it does have a really good range of art books so if you have someone who can’t work out what to get you for a present, just hint towards a voucher and you could be buying gorgeous art books (or gorgeous bags, jewellery etc!) before running over to The Silver Star for coffee (another one of my favourite places – are we lucky to live in Hedland or what?).

DCS Adult Community Corrections manages around 5,000 adult offenders serving court orders in the community around the State. The division contributes to community safety through the effective management of offenders by holding them to account for their actions and providing services aimed at reducing reoffending.

Shire of Roebourne raises Onslow receives funds for fl ood victims a cyclone shelter cyclone warnings each summer and averages a direct hit every two years.

Previously, the only evacuation point for the 750 permanent residents was a single classroom at the Onslow Primary School which holds fewer than 50 people.

However, the centre will not only cater for the residents during cyclones, it allows locals to play sport year round in a town which swelters through most of the year.

Temperatures in Onslow average above 35 degrees for almost half the year, and for 30 of those days, it rises above 40 degrees.

The centre contains a gym, as well as a modern basketball court with an electronic scoring and shot clock.

There will be netball, volleyball and badminton courts as well as an indoor cricket pitch and a day care centre.

North West MLA Vince Catania said the development of the Onslow Community Centre provided a secure evacuation point for the town and would meet critical social needs that had been lacking for years.

Onslow residents have a secure place to shelter from cyclones thanks to a $7million State Government Royalties for Regions investment, which has funded the building of a multipurpose facility that doubles as a major recreation and community centre.

Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls said the facility was designed for its dual purpose and was an important part of the long-term strategy to create sustainable communities in the Pilbara.

“This building is a great example of why the Royalties for Regions program is so important in addressing the long-term needs of regional communities like Onslow which are so often marginalised because of their isolation,” Mr Grylls said.

“Given the current threat of cyclones off our coast at present, and recent flooding in the Gascoyne, this development is a timely reminder of the needs of communities throughout our State.”

Onslow is situated in the centre of what is known as Cyclone Alley.

Shire of Roebourne President Nicole Lockwood has launched a month long fundraising appeal to help flood victims in both Carnarvon and Queensland in partnership with Westpac Banking Corporation, Centro Karratha, the Karratha and Districts Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KDCCI) and the Pilbara News.

The target is to raise at least $20,000 which volunteers kick started with a collection day in the Centro Karratha on Monday 17 January.

The Shire has also committed to contribute $10,000 and has called upon local residents to try and match the Shire’s donation dollar for dollar and show people in the flood devastated regions that we are a ‘community who cares’.

Councillor Lockwood said that following the council’s generous donation, locals only need to donate 50c per person to reach the $20,000 fundraising target .

POLICEWATCH Community events the place to meet your local police

By Senior Constable Newby The New Year is upon us and we can all look forward to an exciting year with many events planned by Karratha Police including; Meet your neighbours at our Street Meets; Name and Shame for Stealing Offences; Burglar Beware and Neighbourhood Watch BBQ’s; and Crime Prevention Awareness Days.

All these events are planned to help in preventing crime in our community.

I will be giving out different information on these days that will help protect yourself, your property and the community from crime.

I will also be attending all the schools and giving lectures about a range of different Police matters, including Drug and Alcohol Awareness, Juvenile Crime, the Role of a Police Officer and many more subjects.

Last week we had a high amount of offences reported including Damage, Stealing, Burglary, Stolen Motor Vehicles, Trespassing and Assaults.

The statistics below show the amount of reported offences over an eight day period last week.

There were six damage offences, 12 stealing, one trespass, four stolen motor vehicles, eight burglaries, two common assaults and one serious assault.

In this eight day period Karratha Police arrested or summonsed 30 people for a total of 56 charges.

Some of the charges included three for damage, two for trespassing, two for stealing, five assaults, two disorderly conduct and 14 drink driving offences.

As you can see Karratha Police are working around the clock to

arrest these criminals that are committing crimes in our town.

Most of these arrests are as a result of Karratha Police proactively patrolling the streets.

Other arrests are as a result of inquiries conducted into a reported offence, such as the Trespass mentioned.

In reported offences we attend after the offence and do our best to see that these criminals are arrested and put through the judicial process but we also ask you for help.

Please help us by locking up your houses and cars.

As you can see from last week there were four vehicles stolen, three of these vehicles were stolen as the keys were either left in the ignition or on the floor of the vehicle.

Please lock your vehicles and put the keys in the house away from sight.

Royalties for Regions Small Grants Scheme Funding Round Now Open • Nominate your favourite local beach for the 2011 WA Clean Beaches Award local history.

It is now in the running for the national Clean Beaches title which will be announced on 6 May. Entries for the 2011 WA Clean Beaches Awards are open until mid-April.

Beaches will be judged in May and winners will be announced in early June.

Beaches can be nominated in the following categories (it is not necessary to enter all categories to be in the running for the overall title of WA’s cleanest beach): Friendly Beach; Litter Prevention; Natural

Resource Management; Environmental Protection; and Community Action.

The school has developed rapidly and Lea now has approximately 130 students aged between two to 13 years.

Lea is a graduate of the WA Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) and has an Associate Diploma Dance (Ballet/Contemporary) and Bachelor Arts Music Theatre.

She has held positions as Head of Dance at the National Theatre in Melbourne, Head of the Dance/ Movement Dept at University of Ballart school of Arts, Dance tutor at WAAPA (conducting annual auditions) and has freelanced as a teacher and choreographer around Australia for the past 25 years working with some of our leading artists.

Lea said she was happy to find herself in Karratha again having spent her high school years in Wickham and graduating from Karratha Senior High School.

Her two brothers still live in Wickham with their families, which

DeckArts Studio first opened in Broome, which Lea ran for 6 years but recently sold.

The school in Broome continues to run successfully.

At the end of 2010, DeckArts Karratha held a performance at St Luke’s College to showcase the work of all students, even the 2 year olds.

The show included jazz, tap, ballet, music theatre and the singing students performing solo’s.

Held in Cossack on Saturday 28th August, the party goers travelled by bus and were treated to a day of fine food, dancing and fancy dress.

The event attracted many characters including the whole Flinstones gang!.

Costume costs were kept to a minimum, and there was no entry fee.

Lea said that the students did a fantastic job and it was important that each student got the chance to be in the front line while they were performing, as their positions rotated throughout each dance.

Lea believes this builds confidence and self esteem in each budding performer.

All students also received performance certificate.

Long-Snouted Lashtail (more commonly known as the Racehorse lizard) The Lashtail is found mainly in sub tropical WA and central NT. It prefers drainage courses, creeks, waterholes and gorges with trees and shrubs.

It is an impressively slender, agile and racy lizard which can run up on its hind legs at up to 25km per hour.

They are a sun loving dragon.

It is common in backyards through out the Pilbara where it often falls victim to cat and dog attacks.

Butcher birds, kookaburras and the larger goannas also prey on these lizards.

Quite often you can see these lizards basking themselves in the middle of the road, the top of a fence, edge of your pool or in a rock outcrop in the garden.

At night I have found them asleep up on the cyclone screens on the house.

I was also amazed at just how well they can swim, after disturbing one on the edge of our pool.

The animal jumped straight into the water where, after my initial worry it had drowned as it dived to the bottom of the pool, it swam the length of the pool underwater and resurfaced at the other end, where it proceeded to clamber out onto the header bricks none the worse.

These lizards run down low flying insects such as bees, wasps, moths, grass hoppers, beetles and bugs.

It will also eat ants and insect larvae.

The males are larger than the females and during breeding tend to be brightly colored and patterned.

Females lay various clutch sizes of 15 eggs upwards and breeding is determined by seasonal rainfall resulting in the availability of food.

These lizards belong to the AGAMIDAE family which means ‘old world’ (or dragon lizards).

The more common lizards in this family are the bearded dragons and water dragons.

These lizards have well developed limbs, long tails, crests and expandable appendages (such as seen on the frill neck lizard).

They all have acute hearing.

Number of babies boom in WA More babies are being born in Western Australia than ever before, according to a new Department of Health report released on 20 January 2011.

Records show that 16 babies have been born already in 2011 at the Nickol Bay Hospital, Karratha.

The report called the Perinatal Statistics in Western Australia 2008 shows that 30,670 babies were born in 2008 – the highest number on record and more than 500 more than the previous year.

The report also found that women were having babies later in life with around 6500 or 21.5 per cent of women giving birth over the age of 35, compared to only 2420 or 9.4 per cent in 1990.

The number of women giving birth under the age of 19 has remained on a par with previous years at around five per cent.

Chief Medical Officer, Dr Simon Towler, said there were no major spikes in this year's statistics compared to the previous year, with Western

Australia continuing to perform well in perinatal care.

"Western Australia still has one of the lowest infant mortality rates in the world," Dr Towler said.

"Recent figures show the overall perinatal mortality rate in Western Australia is 9.2 per 1000 births.

This is a significant reduction from a high of 11.5 per 1000 total births recorded in 1996."

Dr Towler said despite the positive findings in the report, there were still some areas of concern.

Among these are the continuing high mortality rate of Indigenous babies, the high number of Indigenous teenage mothers, and the incidence of smoking during pregnancy.

Dr Towler said an alarming 15.4 per cent of all mothers smoked in 2008, which included 51 per cent of all Indigenous mothers.

Bali travellers to be on alert The Department of Health is warning travellers who have just returned from Bali to be alert for any early symptoms relating to Legionnaires’ Disease.

Four Western Australians and two Victorians who travelled to Bali during December have since been diagnosed with severe pneumonia due to infection with Legionella pneumophilia which is the bacteria that causes Legionnaires’ Disease.

Acting Chief Health Officer Dr Andy Robertson said that the Western Australians were most likely infected in the central Kuta area of Bali.

The exact source of the outbreak is unknown at this time.

“The Indonesian Government has been advised of the Australian cases by the Australian Government and is working with the World Health Organisation to determine the source of the infections,”

Dr Robertson said.

There have now been 10 confirmed cases of Legionnaires’ Disease in Australians associated with this area in Kuta since August 2010; six from Western Australia.

“The early symptoms of Legionnaires’ Disease are typically similar to severe ‘flu like’ illness, and may include fever, chills, muscle soreness, headaches, tiredness, reduced appetite and diarrhoea, along with a dry cough and breathlessness,” he said.

Legionella infections usually develop two to 10 days after exposure.

“Legionnaires’ Disease is treated with specific antibiotics, and while most people recover, some people may develop severe pneumonia requiring hospitalisation.”

Legionnaires’ Disease most often affects middleaged and elderly people, particularly those who smoke or who have lung

disease, diabetes, kidney disease or a weakened immune system.

“We recommend that anyone who falls in one or more of these risk groups who develops flu-like illness after returning from Bali seeks medical advice, and notifies their doctor of their recent travel,” Dr Robertson said.

Legionella pneumophilia is a type of bacteria commonly transmitted by the inhalation of water droplets from contaminated warm water environments such as; air conditioning cooling towers in large buildings and evaporative air conditioners; showers and warm water systems; spa pools; misting or droplet sprays; and fountains.

Legionnaires’ Disease cannot be caught from other people or from animal contact.

The year has started in a flash and the good news is ‘Indoor Volleyball’ is back for 2011.

The North West Volleyball Association (NWVA) will once again be holding its very popular indoor volleyball competition this year with two sharp and short seasons falling in the school terms to keep everyone interested, and to allow them to keep the competition building.

In 2010 the North West Volleyball Association formed and combined both indoor and beach volleyball into the one committee which allowed them to run very successful competitions for both forms of the game.

Last year the association saw 10 teams in both A and B grade take to the court for some very exciting matches and hope all the teams will join them once again for 2011.

Wally Robinson had the longest putt on hole 2.

Bodie Broun had the best 3rd shot on hole 4 and Rob Smith best 3rd shot on hole 6.

Bodie also had the longest drive on hole 1.

The top team on the day coming in with a fabulous score of 24 was the awesome pair, Danny Cam and Adam Ferguson.

Second were Monica Plane and Phil Kennedy also with 24.

Any new squashies?

The Karratha Squash Cub (KSC) have announced that their season will be kicking off soon on 7 February, finishing up on 18 April.

For any new squashies to town, they would love to hear from you.

All levels are welcome.

The KSC play social squash every Thursday at the Karratha Entertainment Centre (KEC) off Sea Ripple Road from 6.30pm onwards.

Playing will cost you $7 a week and racquets can be hired at the KEC front desk if required.

If you would like to play pennants, the club will be holding a grading and social night on Monday 31 January at the KEC from 6.30pm onwards.

If current members would like to play in this round, please let the committee know.

A sheet to put your name down will also be placed on the notice board regarding the upcoming season.
