The next big boom region: Surat Basin QLD THE Surat Basin region north-west of Toowoomba is coming alive with action connected to the new boom resources sector, conversion of coal seam gas (CSG) to liquefied natural gas (LNG). Environmental approval for some of the major CSG-toLNG developments has really put this region on the map for property investors. The Surat Basin is a largelyuntapped resource for coal and CSG, but that is changing rapidly as national and international companies move into the area. The development of multibillion-dollar projects based on CSG will bring major change to towns such as Roma Dalby, Chinchilla and Miles. Rapid population expansion is predicted and property price growth appears inevitable The Surat Basin has a number of coal seam methane fields which presently supply the domestic market, plus a number of power stations and the Roma-to-Brisbane Pipeline. A number of gas companies have recently announced plans to develop liquified natural gas (LNG) plants in Gladstone to export Surat Basin gas to

Future Prospects In March and April 2010 the BG Group signed two contracts worth a combined $80 billion to export LNG to China and Japan. The company signed a $60 billion export deal with a Chinese firm to export coal seam gas (CSG) produced in the Surat Basin and processed into liquefied natural gas (LNG) near Gladstone. A week later, the company secured a 20-year contract worth $20 billion to export LNG to Japan from 2015. The BG Group said in November 2010 it has
committed $15 billion to proceed with its Queensland Curtis LNG project, which is the company’s single biggest investment. It involves construction of a processing plant at Gladstone, with a 540km underground pipeline from the Surat Basin where it plans to sink 6,000 gas wells. There will be 5,000 construction jobs between now and 2014. Estimates of investment topping $100 billion are being talked about, and wages for the lucky ones will easily exceed $100,000 in towns where unemployment is already below 2 per cent.
