Welcome Pilbara Coast TO THE
Waiba!
Waiba! Nyindaguru milbanha warrbangu nhurdu Ngarluma ngurra. Translation: Hello and welcome to everybody who has come from far away to Ngarluma Country. Traditional owners within the region, the Ngarluma people extend a welcome in language to the visitors of the Pilbara, a water and inland playground on Western Australia’s rugged North West Coast. The Pilbara Coast region encompasses the towns of Karratha, Dampier, Roebourne, Wickham, Cossack and Point Samson offering visitors an endless array of interesting activities, destinations and attractions. When combined with industry based attractions the Pilbara Coast region of WA offers unsurpassed opportunities for visitors to experience some of the most stunning natural and man-made attractions around. Here, you can sail, fish and swim in clear blue waters one day then climb rugged hills and view the red harsh but beautiful landscape the next, without leaving town. Travel back in time while visiting Cossack and Roebourne, watch glorious sunsets at Dampier then wonder at the spectacular natural phenomenon, the Staircase to the Moon. Marvel at the size of the resource giants, experience Aboriginal culture and art, purchase locally grown pearls and fresh fish direct. View the abundant flora and fauna, or fossick for semiprecious stones. On the Pilbara Coast, we have it all.

Cultural Heritage Aboriginal Culture provides a unique insight into the history of our region. We acknowledge in this brochure, the Ngarluma and Yindjibarndi people who are traditional landowners within this region. Despite their tragic history, the indigenous people of the area are achieving the re-establishment of their cultural and traditional links and giving the community a positive future for their people. There are some great books that have been written in recent times about the history and culture of our local Aboriginal people and these can be obtained from either the Karratha or Roebourne Visitor Centres. While in the area, the Jaburara Heritage Trail, Deep Gorge and Burrup Peninsula are fascinating places to view some of the 40,000 plus petroglyphs or rock carvings that are still evident today. The Burrup Peninsula area has now been recognised as the most prolific Aboriginal rock art site in the world and was listed by the Heritage Council of WA in July 2007. Today, Aboriginal art from the Pilbara has become recognised nationally and internationally as significant pieces. Local art works are for sale at many outlets and both visitor centres.

Our Pioneering Past The towns and areas surrounding Karratha have a European history that dates back to 1699 when William Dampier first sailed into the Archipelago aboard his ship the Roebuck, landing at Pirates Cove on Enderby Island. From there the islands have had a very interesting past with including the establishment of a sheep farm on West Lewis Island to supply fresh meat to a whaling station on Malus Island, both ventures of course now abandoned and in ruins. The township of Roebourne has an amazing history being first established in 1866 and named after John Septimus Roe, Western Australia’s First Surveyor General. The town grew to be the administrative capital of the North West with Cossack as the port that serviced this then very large town. With the next nearest towns being Darwin and Geraldton, you can see why Roebourne was such an important place. Today in Roebourne there are eight historic buildings still remaining, each with its own history. The Gaol has interesting stories to tell, including five hangings between 1893 and 1900, with three taking place on the same day being for the convicted murderers of Doctor Vines, the then local MD of the area. A brochure with further information and facts on the historic buildings can be obtained from the Roebourne Visitor Centre. Cossack, officially declared a town in 1872, was the first port in the North West and played host to thousands of people seeking their fortunes in the Pilbara gold rush. Cossack was also the home of the fast growing pearling industry, however once the local pearling grounds were fished out, the pearlers moved further north to Broome. Although Cossack’s growth was spread over forty years, its decline was more rapid, as by 1900 the pearling fleet had all but gone, the gold rush had diminished, and sailing vessels had increased in size. The Cossack port was no longer suitable as a harbour. In 1904 a jetty was established at Point Samson and all shipping movements were relocated there. Sadly Cossack had lost her position as the most important port in the Northwest. The Municipality of Cossack was dissolved in 1910 however people still lived in the town until after World War II. The town was eventually abandoned by 1950. In 1866, the Jarman Island Light house was ordered as a kit from England, arriving almost a year later by ship. After being assembled using a labour force from the Roebourne Prison, the lighthouse was fully operational with a lighthouse keeper to ensure that the four wick kerosene lamp was lit every night. In 1917 it was automated, burning a guiding light for shipping right up until 1985 when it was finally de-commissioned. Thanks to the Shire of Roebourne and monies from both the State and Federal Government, the lighthouse has now been fully restored to preserve this fascinating piece of our local maritime history for generations to come.

Karratha
SHOPPING HUB OF THE PILBARA
Karratha is located 1,535km north of Perth. Known primarily for the surrounding resource industries, Karratha is considered the shopping hub of the Pilbara offering air-conditioned major retail stores servicing a rapidly growing town. Take a cultural experience, walk the Jaburara Heritage Trail which features a number of petroglyphs, middens and artefact scatters. Climb TV Hill Lookout for panoramic views of Karratha and the coastline or relax and enjoy a game at the Karratha Golf or Bowling Club. If you visit Karratha the first weekend in August don’t miss the FeNaCIng Festival. The name comes from the chemical symbols of the three main production and export commodities in Karratha and Dampier: Iron Ore-Fe, Salt-NaCl and Natural Gas-NG (not strictly correct but it makes the name work!). The festival is of such importance locally that the Monday is a gazetted public holiday.

Karratha City of the North
Love where you live Situated on the spectacular Pilbara coast, nearly 18,500 local residents live in the Shire of Roebourne - the powerhouse of the Pilbara. Established in 1961, the Shire of Roebourne consists of five major towns including Karratha, Dampier, Roebourne, Wickham, Point Samson and the historic settlement of Cossack. Karratha, the Shire’s thriving regional centre, boasts modern, first-class community facilities, city-style shopping and a laidback, coastal lifestyle. But life is about to get a whole lot better...
Karratha is undergoing a massive transformation - from mining town to major Australian city. The metamorphosis will include major infrastructure and community well being projects such as the Karratha Town Centre Redevelopment, the Service Workers Accommodation Village, a new hospital, the Karratha Education Leisure and Training Project, the Baynton West Family Centre, the Bulgarra Community Centre and possible waterfront developments in both Dampier and Karratha.

Many locals still recall his visits and laugh at the memories of his strange and wonderful ways. Two Red Dog books are available from the Karratha Visitor Centre. Proceeds from one book is donated to the Royal Flying Doctor Service on behalf of the author, Beverly Duckett. Permits are required to access Sam’s Island. These are available from the visitor centres.
2011 Staircase to the Moon Dates
The staircase to the Moon is an illusion created by a full moon rising over mud flats on a low tide. The effect is breathtaking and creates the illusion of a staircase leading to the moon. This phenomenon occurs in several areas on the West Coast, including Hearson’s Cove and Cossack. April

Dampier Archipelago The Dampier Archipelago offers visitors unsurpassed opportunities for water recreation at its best. Everything from pristine white beaches, fringing coral reefs, spectacular fishing, world class snorkelling and diving, all lie within a 45 kilometre radius of Dampier. For details on charter boat operators and access to the Islands, contact the Karratha or Roebourne Visitor Centres.
The Dampier Archipelago, in the Pilbara region of Western Australia (WA), is a coastal wonderland comprising 42 islands and islets off the coast of Dampier and Point Samson. These islands offer excellent opportunities for boating, fishing, snorkelling, camping or family recreation. The Jaburara Aboriginal language group are the original inhabitants of WA’s Burrup Peninsula and Dampier Archipelago, and it wasn’t until 1699 that William Dampier became the first recorded Englishman to visit the area.
What to do?
• Take the four hour boat trip from Dampier to the neighbouring Montebello Islands, a group of 100 limestone islands with unspoiled white sandy beaches and crystal clear waters. The islands are perfect for diving, snorkelling, camping, beachcombing and fishing. The Montebello Islands also claim to be the site of Western Australia’s first shipwreck, the Tyrall, which sank in 1622. • Admire some of the best examples of Aboriginal rock art (petroglyphs), created by the Jaburara people on Enderby and Rosemary Islands in the Dampier Archipelago. The east side of Enderby Island is the resting place of many historical boats and planes. • Explore the ruins on West Lewis Island, they are believed to have been one of the early pastoral settlements on WA’s Dampier Archipelago. • Enjoy excellent fishing and experience the thrill of beach camping on one or more of the islands. • Check out the remains of the old whaling and pearling stations that operated on Malus Island between 1870 and 1872. • Visit Gidley Island’s Black Hawk Bay and explore the remains of the pearler camp and grave sites. • Go diving or snorkelling on the coral reefs surrounding Dolphin Island and check out the rock pools that are thought to have been used by the pearl fishers for collecting fresh water. • Fishing on the Dampier Archipelago: With a huge variety of fish species inhabiting the area it’s a fishing paradise for both amateurs and professionals alike. Species include the much sought after coral trout, red emperor, scarlet sea perch, spangled emperor and Norwest snapper. • Camping on the Dampier Archipelago: Camping in WA’s Dampier Archipelago is permitted within 100 metres of the high-water mark on the following beaches that are zoned for recreation. • Some of the islands are classified ‘A Class’ reserves, which means they are off limits, although a select few allow day access and overnight camping. Please remember, no fires, be clean and protect the local flora and fauna.

Turtle Nesting & Whale Watching
Pilbara beaches and islands are important nesting sites for green, flatback hawksbill and loggerhead turtles. Females come ashore to lay their eggs between September and April. Humpback whales arrive between June/July to calf in the warm tropical waters and depart in October. Ask staff at the local visitor centres for more information.
Burrup Peninsula
For the adventurous a trip further out along the Burrup Peninsula towards Withnell Bay will reward you with untouched scenery, amazing rock formations and pristine, sandy beaches. Access to the area is through mangroves and a short, very rough and steep incline known locally as the “Jump Up”- for good reason! Only experienced drivers in 4WD vehicles should attempt the Jump Up as it has gone down in local legend for its difficulty. Access to some areas beyond the Jump Up are restricted so watch for signs.
The Montebello Island’s
Located about 130kms west of Dampier, the Montebello’s is a group of nearly 100 limestone islands surrounded by white sandy beaches and turquoise green waters. With a six metre tidal range, the islands are perfect for snorkelling, beachcombing and exploring, as well as providing fertile fishing grounds.
Hearson’s Cove
This lovely sheltered cove is a popular swimming and picnic spot. Located on the Burrup Peninsula between Karratha and Dampier, Hearson’s Cove provides an excellent location to see the ‘Staircase to the Moon’. BBQ facilities and shade are available. On your way through to the Cove, call into Deep Gorge to see the Aboriginal rock engravings (petroglyphs). This area is recognised as one of the most prolific Aboriginal art sites in Australia. Over 10,000 individual rock engravings and etchings have been identified in this area.

Point Samson boasts everything for a relaxing holiday from excellent caravan parks, boutique style B&Bs, to a quality four-star resort, all strategically located close to protected sandy beaches. Enjoy great fishing and snorkelling spots such as Point Samson Beach, John’s Creek and Honeymoon Cove. Point Samson is now home to a large fishing fleet where you can purchase fresh seafood direct. Point Samson has a reputation for some of the finest seafood restaurants. Have a drink at the Tavern, enjoy fresh fish from Moby’s or a delicious meal at Ta Ta’s Restaurant. Point Samson is nestled along the West Pilbara coastline. Named after Michael Samson who accompanied Walter Padbury on his journey in 1863. Point Samson was established as a deep water port to service Roebourne and surrounding districts around 1910, due to silting problems at Cossack. Point Samson had a very active history, unloading general cargo for the then boom town of Wittenoom. Although small, for many years Point Samson handled the third largest annual port tonnage in Western Australia, only being surpassed by Fremantle and Geraldton. The original “T” head jetty, nearly 1,900 feet long, was destroyed by a cyclone in 1925. The Point Samson jetty also served the developing town of Wickham until wharf facilities were completed at Cape Lambert. Time and cyclones have had their effect and the jetty deteriorated over the years. It was finally removed in 1991 and a small section rebuilt on land is a historic reminder. Karratha Visitor Centre customer service counter is made from the old jetty timber which is Jarrah, a WA timber. Point Samson now has everything needed to enjoy a relaxing holiday including protected sandy beaches, great fishing and snorkeling spots at Point Samson Beach, John’s Creek and Honeymoon Cove. Point Samson has a large fishing industry which has a reputation for some of the finest fresh seafood you can purchase. Please see accommodation section of what Point Samson offers.

Whim mCreekCreek Whi
Whim Creek Hotel is situated on the North West Coastal Highway, just one hour north of Roebourne. The discovery of copper at Whim Creek in 1887 signalled the beginning of a long yet sporadic mining era, and placed the area on the map. This quaint old pub has charm and history while offering food, relaxation and a drink or two.
Whim Creek Cemetery
The stories behind the deaths of those buried at the nearby Whim Creek Cemetery paints a picture of the harsh and rugged conditions endured by the country’s pioneer miners. Many of the men died from diseases that are now easily treated, such as mitral disease (heart disease); nephritis (kidney inflammation); gastritis; syncope (fainting); dengue and inflamed bowels. There are 24 people known to be buried at the cemetery, with only two of the graves marked with headstones. In 2002 Frank Woods set about restoring and beautifying the cemetery. Mr Woods has been recognised by the Shire of Roebourne with a plaque at the entrance of the cemetery.

Natural Attractions Flora and Fauna
Blankets of Mulla-Mulla and Sturt Pea, soft yellow flowers of the wattles and the orange cockroach bush, provide a dramatic contrast to the hard red earth of the Pilbara. Generally from June to August (winter) is the best time to see the Pilbara wildflowers. The common kangaroo of the rocky country is the euro; on the plains you can see red kangaroos. Black flying foxes are easily seen at Millstream with a variety of birds during the cooler hours of the day, especially near water. Fourteen species of dragonfly and damselfly have been recorded in the Millstream wetlands. Watch for the large goannas, crossing the roads. There are five different species of goannas known by their local name, “Bungarra”. Four varieties of Sturt Peas have been photographed in this area. Crimson with red bosses (the raised centres of the flower), crimson with black bosses, a white hybrid variety and a crimson and white variegated which is less common.
Miaree Pool
Approximately 30km south of Karratha on the NW Coastal Highway is the Maitland River. Just a few hundred metres east of the bridge is a picturesque clear water pool. This pool is a lovely spot for picnics, camping, swimming or just laying around under the wonderful shade trees that grow right on the water’s edge.
Python Pool
Python Pool is a permanent freshwater plunge pool at the base of a cliff in the Chichester Range escarpment. This popular picnic and swimming spot is on the Roebourne/Wittenoom Road, 78km from North West Coastal Highway turn-off, 28km east of Roebourne. We suggest that you always check road conditions with the local visitor information centre before visiting.

Local Industries
The Port of Dampier now boasts to being the highest export port in Australia. Contributing to this figure are the huge operations of Pilbara Iron, Dampier Salt, Woodside Offshore Petroleum and Burrup Fertilisers as well as many smaller industries by their scale being the export of nickel, copper, ammonia and fish just to name a few. The Pilbara Coast contributes over 25 percent of Australia’s national economy through exports, taxes and royalties. The following pages provide industry information. Tours are available over some of these operations, ask at the visitor centres.

Mining and Industry Western Australia’s West Pilbara Coast and its thriving hub Karratha are home to a large mining and industry complexes producing salt, iron ore, copper, fertilizers and natural gas. Often referred to as the ‘engine room of the nation’, some of the world’s largest privately owned railways are also located here. The region generates approximately 25 percent of Australia’s national economy through exports, taxes and royalties. Enjoy a guided tour through one of the many facilities in this resource rich region. They can be booked through the Karratha and Roebourne visitor centres.
Westmore Seafoods
The Pilbara fishing industry makes a vital contribution to the local economy and is a major supplier of fresh seafood to the whole of Australia. As many as 20 vessels operate out of Johns Creek, at different times of the year. The total annual production is between 2,500 and 3,000 tonnes, more than 50% of the State’s catch, making Johns Creek on Point Samson Peninsula Western Australia’s (WA) premier fish producing port. Fresh and frozen seafood can be purchased all year round from Westmore Seafood’s factory on Bill Miller Drive, off Honeymoon Road. Visit the Westmore Seafood website for further information about the fishing industry.
Dampier Salt
In the 1960s, Hamersley Iron established a deep-water port, support facilities and community infrastructure at Dampier on the West Pilbara Coast. Since the first shipment of 19,000 tonnes in April 1972, to Central Glass in Japan, sales of salt from the Dampier Salt operations in WA have increased from one million to over four million tonnes per year. The salt is mainly used in the chemical industry, for the production of plastics, glass, detergents and a variety of chemicals. It is also used in food processing, food products and road de-icing. To find out more about the operations, visit the Dampier Salt website.
Rio Tinto - Iron Ore
Port facilities at Dampier and Cape Lambert on the West Pilbara Coast are owned by Rio Tinto. As a world-class asset manager, the company operates and maintains the salt industry, ore mining, rail, port and power facilities in this region of WA.Take a look at Dampier and Cape Lambert operations by joining one of the facilities tours. See the tours page or contact Karratha or Roebourne visitor centre for more details.
Rio Tinto - Iron Ore Rail Facility
The Rio Tinto - Iron Ore Rail Facility operates the largest privately owned rail network in Australia. The facility services 11 mining sites via a mainline system of approximately 1300 kilometres of track and has the capacity to haul approximately 130 million tonnes of ore per year. The rail system is an essential part of Rio Tinto - Iron Ore’s integrated production process and directly affects the company’s capacity to blend ore to meet customer specifications. cont. on next page
Dampier Ship Loading Facility
There are two ship-loading terminals located at Dampier – Parker Point commenced its first operations in 1966 and East Intercourse Island in 1972. The port facility is 250 kilometres from the nearest inland mining site on the West Pilbara Coast. It takes approximately 24 to 36 hours to load a ship and the average ship loading capacity is 140 million tonnes per annum. For more information about the iron ore operations visit the Rio Tinto website.
Woodside-operated North West Shelf Venture and Karratha Gas Plant
Representing an investment of A$27 billion, the Woodside-operated North West Shelf Venture facilities constitute Australia’s largest oil and gas resource development and currently account for more than 40 per cent of Australia’s oil and gas production. The North West Shelf Venture is one of the world’s largest LNG producers and supplies oil and gas to Australian and international markets from huge gas and condensate fields in the Carnarvon Basin on Australia’s north-west continental shelf. To build this project today would require an investment of more than A$50 billion. Built in 1984, the Karratha Gas Plant is located at Withnell Bay near the Port of Dampier and town of Karratha, 1260 km north-west of Perth. It is one of the most advanced integrated onshore gas production facilities in the world. Covering approximately 200 hectares the Karratha Gas Plant includes facilities for processing natural gas and associated liquids into domestic gas, LNG, LPG and condensate. The plant includes five LNG processing trains, two domestic gas trains, six condensate stabilisation units, three LPG fractionation units as well as storage and loading facilities for LNG, LPG and condensate.
Burrup Fertilisers
Construction of the Burrup Fertilisers AU$700 million liquid ammonia plant on the Burrup Peninsula, near Karratha in WA, started in 2003. The company’s first export shipment was made from the Port of Dampier in June, 2006. With an annual production capacity of 760,000 tonnes, the plant is one of the world’s largest ammonia production facilities, producing 6% of the total world output of tradable ammonia. Visit the Burrup Fertilisers website for further information.

Pearling in the Pilbara
By 1866 Tien Tsin had developed into a thriving pearling and maritime community, centralised around the port. By 1869 the port was the premier shipping depot for the emergent pastoral industry. Tien Tsin was renamed Cossack in 1871 after the ship “Cossack” which safely transported the then Western Australian Governor, Sir Frederick Weld, north. The Pilbara pearling industry was short lived; relocating to Broome by the turn of the century. The Cossack port eventually became clogged with silt restricting access to larger shipping vessels and pearl luggers. In 1865, the Colonial Secretaries Office in London decreed convict labour was not permitted in areas above the 26th parallel, necessitating the use of Aboriginal labour in the pastoral and pearling industries. In 1868 the Jaburara tribe was massacred on the Burrup Peninsula during what has become known as the ‘Flying Foam Massacre’, paradoxically decreasing the amount of labour on which the pearling and pastoral industry relied. (Reference: http://www.det.wa.edu.au/education/ abled/apac/districts/pilbara/europeans.htmlhe) Today, Western Australia is the main pearl producing state, with pearl farms still operational in the waters off the Pilbara Coast.
