Our pal, Jeff Norwell, is working with a couple of his friends to put on the “2014 Jalopy Jam Up!” This will be a traditional old-style outdoor hot rod show. Pre-64 cars, no trophies, no judging, no hassles. Jeff says bring your finished or unfinished hot rod, custom or nostalgia race car. Drive it or trailer it, as long as its pre-64, it will qualify. The Jam Up will be August 16 at the Frontier Ghost Town in Durham, Ontario. Email: jalopyjamup@gmail.com for further information. We plan to be at both events. Hope to see you there. In this issue, you will read about Jonathan Hendricks, the criminal defense lawyer interested in the problems facing the car enthusiast. If you have questions about your vehicle’s legality, police actions or the directions that the MOE or MTO are taking, join us for Jonathan’s seminar “The Legal Pit Stop” July 10 at Performance Improvements, 87 Advance Rd. in Etobicoke. Seating is limited. Please visit us and reserve your space so you won’t be disappointed.

will spring soon be here? As this is being written it is mid-May and there has been virtually no real spring weather except for a couple of days. My fendered car has been out three or four times, the open-wheel car twice and the second time it was raining on the trip home. So you can officially say 2014 has been a slow start for the car enthusiast. However, it looks like things are finally getting rolling. It is time to look at events that are scheduled and see just which ones catch your eye. Old Autos has an extensive listing on their pages, and if you are in Oshawa, there is a free give-away newspaper “Classic Cruising in Durham Region” available in numerous places, including our Oshawa location. Even the Toronto Star had a listing in their Wheels section May 17 which you may be able to find on their web site. Certainly lots of opportunities to take your ride out. As well as the established ones, I am looking at some of the new events to see what changes are about. Two that have caught my eye are “Classics on the Square” scheduled for July 6 at Mississauga’s Celebration Square. It is being put on by the Mississauga Classic Car Club and has support from the local politicians. In fact, Councilor Ron Starr, a car buff himself, will have a couple of vehicles on display. Check www.MississagaClassicCarClub.com for further details.

Too HOT for your Battery? One of the most detrimental conditions for a battery is Story and Photos by Robert Michaelson high temperatures.

W

ith summer finally coming and the hotter weather on the way, (in fact record highs are being predicted for 2014), it is time to look over your ride to be sure that everything is ship-shape. When temperatures reach into the extreme numbers we are quick to inspect our air conditioning and other comfort-providing systems. One item often neglected is the battery in your vehicle. High temperatures can lay your battery low. The extreme heat will cause the fluid to boil, will evaporate battery fluid, in general, simply run your battery into the ground. A lack of fluid will dry out the cells in the battery and cause excessive internal corrosion. Eventually, your battery will fail. To avoid being left stranded on the side of the road because of a battery failure, there are a number of things to do to keep you on the road. If you have a battery that can be topped up, check it often and fill to the indicated line with distilled water. Clean the top of the battery and the terminals, removing all the dirt and corrosion that has accumulated. Dirt and corrosion will conduct an electrical short resulting in a dead battery. Now what? Obviously you have to either buy a new battery or get a charger and recharge the battery.

Technology is coming to your rescue. The latest widget we have seen and tried is the CRANK multi-function power supply. This tiny lightweight device encloses a powerful rechargeable Nano Lithium Polymer battery pack capable of starting multiple vehicles before it has to be recharged. In addition to 12-volt vehicles of all types, it will power up your cell phone, laptop, tablet etc. It comes with its own carrying case, and all the cables and charger necessary to keep all your electronic devices at peak levels. If you need a true battery charger, CTEK is the device you should look at. CTEK chargers are designed to baby your battery, rather than a high-powered harsh charging system that can often do more damage than good. The latest CTEK model offers four charging modes with an eight step display telling you just how well your battery is doing. The CTEK will charge the small batteries in bikes and off-road vehicles. Standard wet cell and gel batteries in vehicles and golf carts etc. plus unlike other chargers it treats your Optima or Odyssey battery with the care necessary for it to remain in peak condition. So don’t get tossed to the side of the road with a dead battery. Check out these great products and avoid problems.

Every glovebox needs a backup phone battery that can jump start your Car There are countless backup batteries on the market that promise to revive a dead smartphone. But the CRANK promises to be there for another thing you probably never leave home without — your car. With 12,000 mAh of power (and assorted charging tips), you can actually recharge multiple portable electronics through its three power ports: 19v for laptops, 12v standard output and 5v USB output. But since the CRANK provides 12 volts of power at a peak of 400 amps, it can also be used to jumpstart just about any vehicle. It even comes with a set of proprietary jumper cables so you don’t need to borrow a set from a friend, or steal them from your neighbor’s open garage. So if you accidentally left your headlights on, you don’t need to flag down another vehicle or drag out some heavy 25-pound booster. Perfect thing to pack before a summer road trip!

JUMP START YOUR VEHICLE! World’s smallest and lightest jump starter and power supply! • 400 Cranking Amps • Powered by rechargeable Lithium-ion battery • Portable Size - store in your glove box • 3 Power Ports: 19V, 12V, & 5V USB output TE9319

Purple Finger Eater Photos: Jim Madigan • Story: Bob McJannett

A Father/Daughter project that really hauls Think back to when you were young. Now imagine if your dad offered you the chance to build your first car with his help. Not something you often hear, eh! Well, six years ago, Art Hagner did just that. Now his daughter Olivia was only 13, but she started asking questions almost immediately. Plans were discussed, what kind of vehicle, what purpose and what colour. Immediately, Olivia knew her project would be purple. Fast-forward three years, it was time to move forward; the decision was to be a pickup truck with all the modern conveniences and safety features. The goal, to have it finished in time for Olivia to go off to university. After some time searching, a 1953 Chev pickup was chosen. The decision reflected their desire to build a reliable and safe vehicle that would act as Olivia’s daily transportation. A truck that provided all the niceties of a late-model vehicle. Air conditioning, power steering, four-wheel disc brakes, loads of sound deadener, tilt column, quality sound system, leather power seats, and more. Now, it is important to note that Art

8

• Performance in Motion •

is not a novice. First, he is the transportation specialist at Judith Nyman Secondary School in Brampton. Second, he is a thirty-year hobbyist, having built numerous projects over the years. His skill set is over the top. Olivia had an excellent teacher to help her learn about her vehicle. Work was begun. The truck was completely disassembled, and all the parts refreshed, rebuilt or replaced. Then the new suspension was created and installed. Everything else necessary to accomplish their goal was found and installed. By spring 2013, it was completed, and yes, it was painted purple even thou Art had expected Olivia would have changed her mind by now. By September 2013, they had driven it a troublefree 3,000 kms and it was loaded ready for Olivia’s move to university. How much does Olivia like her truck? Well, when

she was looking for housing at school the first requirement was that her truck would have its own garage to keep it safe. Back in the day, lots of specialty cars had names, Olivia’s truck is no exception. A friend had come down from North Bay to join them in going to a concert; they took the truck out to dinner, and when they returned home, the friend slammed the door on her finger! She was rushed to the walk-in clinic for stitches, soon all was well. However, the truck will be forever known as “The Purple Finger Eater.”

The Build 1 This shot shows you just how far their pickup was disassembled before the rebuild was started. 2 Here the cab has received a new firewall and transmission tunnel that will allow the engine to be properly located low in the chassis.

ASK A LAWYER

Here are just a few of the questions we plan to put to Jonathan that will be answered during his seminar. Please join us and bring all your own questions and concerns. Q. Is it true that you cannot smoke in a commercial vehicle? If you do, what could you expect from the police officer?

Q. If I am stopped and asked to blow in a breathalyzer, what should I do?

Story and Photos by Robert Michaelson

If

you have been involved with the car hobby for the last few years, you are aware there are forces working against us. Even though, in most instances, our cars are driven a minimum number of kms each season and are ultra-safe since the braking systems and suspensions have been upgraded to today’s standards, insurers are refusing to insure them for regular driving. “It’s been modified” is the usual answer, sending us to the specialty insurers who, while offering very attractive rates, unfortunately are restrictive in where and when you drive. Both MTO and MOE have regulations that are, confusing to say the least, and in some instances, patently unfair. Did you ever hope that in the event you got in some trouble with your car or truck you would be able to find a sympathetic lawyer? Someone familiar with the MTO requirements, the MOE regulations, knows what the laws regarding emission devices on modified cars are etc? Well your hope has been realized. Jonathan Hendricks is that lawyer. You see Jonathan is a car enthusiast. He has been since his youth. His dad, a policeman, was the proud owner of a 70’s Corvette, and Jonathan used to go with him whenever he was buying parts for his Vette from our store.

12

• Performance in Motion •

Q. If I modify my vehicle without reporting the modification to my insurer, what could the consequences be?

After high school, Jonathan went to the University of Toronto for his undergraduate degree. He then studied at the University of Windsor law school. It was in Windsor that his passion for Transportation, Criminal and Administrative Law grew. He graduated in 2012 and was called to the Law Society of Upper Canada after articling with the Ministry of the Attorney General. Since then, all is history. Jonathan has retained his interest in cars and has become very familiar with the problems that modified car owners, tuner and truck enthusiasts face. He wants to specialize in this field. Jonathan practices in the Greater Toronto Area with an office in downtown Toronto. Jonathan has volunteered to do a seminar on the current problems facing car enthusiasts and to give us some insight on future laws that could be in the works. The seminar will be held at Performance Improvements, 87 Advance Road in Toronto on July 10. Space is limited, so call 416-259-9656 to reserve your seat. We will start about 6:30pm and go until there are no more questions.

Q. Do current environmental and emissions laws apply to older hotrod vehicles?

Q. Is there a way to avoid liability if my hot-rod is involved in an accident and I am sued? Come July 10 to his seminar, and the questions above along with your concerns will be answered. Jonathan will do his best to explain what you could be facing and what you may expect from the powers that be.

Should you need his services, he can be reached at: Jonathan Hendricks 647 894 0595 hendricksj@bell.net

Jonathan has taken the time to study the problems we car enthusiasts face and will clearly attempt to explain the best way to deal with them. We hope to see you there. Reserve your spot now at www.bit.ly/pi-legal.

_TRACKDAY

SPDA LAPPING DAY

W

hile SPDA originally stood for Subaru Performance Drivers Association, the group has outgrown just the Subaru brand, and now encourages everyone to become a better driver. To further those goals, the association holds various driving events throughout the year. They focus on hands-on training for a value price, with driving clinics, autocross and lapping days. Once we found out anyone could join in the fun, we signed up online to check out their first lapping day at the new Canadian Tire Motorsport Park Driver Development Centre (aka Mosport DDT.) The newly expanded track is now 2.8-km long and has grown to include the former circle track next door. A new two-story building is onsite for training (and lunch), and the track has been widened and now features more straightaways and possible passing zones. A truly eclectic mix of cars and people showed up, from absolute novices in daily drivers to fully-prepped race cars practicing for the OTA CSCS event the next day. Where else can you see a Big-

Block Firebird running with BMWs, Subarus and Porsches? Not to mention a certain roll cage-equipped truck! It truly was a low-key event where everyone could safely enjoy the limits of their vehicles. SPDA will have another DDT lapping day on Sept. 7. The last one sold out, so reserve your spot ahead of time to avoid disappointment. Also, be sure to check out their website for more events. Take a look at some of the vehicles who came out to play, will you be one of them next time? SPDA www.spda-online.com

Mustang SSBC Brake Kit Upgrade

A

fter several track events last year turned the stock Mustang brakes into a screeching mess of molten metal, a brake upgrade was moved up the priority list. SSBC is not a name as wel-known as some other brake manufacturers, but they have been building performance brake kits in the USA since 1975. FRONT: Tri-Power three Piston aluminum floating calipers. We went with a 13” slotted rotor to maximize future wheel options, but a 14” is also available. Utilizes the same D-731 pad found on C5 Corvettes, and available in many

different compounds. By maximizing piston size with a floating design, these have outperformed four and six piston calipers without creating the wheel fitment issues associated with some performance calipers. You really need to check that your new brakes are going to work with the wheels you have before you order. REAR: Single piston with a 12.8” slotted rotor. The caliper includes a built-in parking brake. It may need adjustment depending on the application. The rear uses a very common size pad making replacements very economical.

In fact, even with a more expensive front pad, (because everything that is made for a Corvette is expensive, right?) my overall pad replacement cost went down with this kit! At the track stopping distances were noticably shortened. Brake fade has been reduced. It was tough to make a true comparison as the Driver Development Track has been completely redesigned for 2014. Now to work on the loose nut behind the wheel!

K

en Young enjoyed taking his car out to the odd track day, but didn’t like having to search through 10 different websites to figure out what organization was holding a trackday where and when. Instead of complaining, Ken decided to do something about it! “I wanted to see all track events in southern Ontario in one place” said Ken. “So, I created torontotrackdays.com. As a novice, I also had questions. Which organizations were the

safest? Which events were well organized? I could search car forums to find the the answers, but the information was scattered. I wanted to create a site that would have the info all drivers want, without having to spend hours combing the web.” Thanks to Ken, there is now an easy way to see what you should be doing with your car! Dragstrip Memories 2014 Story and Photos by Bob McJannett

A

pril 13th saw the amazing collection of historical war planes displayed at the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum had been carefully moved to the side of their magnificent facility. Suddenly all these really interesting restorations were crowded together. Why? Through the efforts of Rob Potter and Tony Hayes, the rest of the floor area was soon filled with a wild collection of unusual drag race vehicles. Super Stock, Altereds, Gassers, Dragsters and even a Wheelstander where out on the show floor. That Sunday was your chance to see both current racers and a wide variety of cars from “the good old days.” On display were the current Tim Hortons Top Fuel rear-engined dragster and, on the other side of the floor, a short wheelbase fuel injected old-style front-engined dragster sponsored by Herb’s Garage in Breslau. It was amazing to see the changes that have been made to these “fastest cars on the track” over the last 60-75 years. When you first entered the show area, you were treated to the fully restored, (probably better than it had ever been) John Petrie Chrysler Super Car Clinic 1970 Challenger, with John himself there to help you relive those glory days at the track. The ONDR (Ontario Nostalgia Drag Racers) and the ELTA (East London Timing Association) clubs were well represented with cars from all the eras. Nostalgia fans turned out in large numbers on a great sunny day to inspect all the exhibits. No matter what your drag race interests are, you would find something to excite you on the show floor. Hats off to Tony and Rob for all their efforts. If you missed it, plan to attend next year. Meanwhile, check out just some of the cars that were on display.

Based in London, Ontario, the Rydell Hope and Lang G/Gas Vega was the talk of its day. The car features a Chevy 6-cylinder engine with a spliced V8 head. Restoration was begun by the late Paul Dunbar; however, when his health began to fail, he sold it to Doug Cadman who completed it as Paul had wanted.

This metalflake extended chassis Fiat has belonged to the Keen Brothers from Brantford for many years. It was a regular at St Thomas in early 2000.

Dragon Fire wheelstander with a replica 40 Ford coach body. Can’t wait to see this one in action.

Frank Kunkel had his award-winning Olds-powered street-driven 1938 Chevrolet on display. Frank’s car is one of the winningest street-driven cars in Ontario.

The Boneshaker, sinister looking Willy’s was a part of the ELTA (East London Timing Association) display.

One of the highlights of this years event was the restored John Petrie 1970 Challenger from his Chrysler Supercar Clinic days. Even better, John was there himself to reminisce about his drag racing days.

The ELTA display also featured this 50s style front-engined dragster, representing the glory days when a couple of guys could build their own top-of-the-class dragster in their garage without deep pockets.

There were a number of premium Super Stock cars on display including the Jim Jewer Construction-sponsored Mopar.

Charity Raffle Pedal Car Charlie Havilland’s Charlie Horse AA/ Altered running a supercharged early Hemi engine was the scourge of his class during the 60s.

Rick Proctor, head honcho of the ONDR, had his big-block bantam on display. The James Boy’s pedal car is a story in itself see our sidebar.

You could win this rare (one of only two) “James Boys” Pedal Car, while supporting the Mike Condie Foundation. The foundation honours Mike who was a friend of Paul Dunbar. Its goal is to help those unable to afford the drugs required to fight cancer. When Paul Dunbar was given four months to live, he commissioned Dave Robbins to create a pedal car painted like his “James Boys” A/Gas 33 Willys sedan that he and his wife Sandra had restored. He wanted it for his future grandchild, who he thought he wouldn’t be around to see born. Luckily, the doctors were wrong and he survived long enough to see his new granddaughter. Sadly, Paul passed away last November. Meanwhile another pedal car was built to raffle off during the ONDR’s 2014 season. Paul chose the cause, the second pedal car was donated by Dwayne Froats and again restored to pristine condition by Dave Robbins. Hats off to everyone involved. It’s a fitting tribute to Paul. If you are at an ONDR event, be sure to buy a handful of raffle tickets. All the money is going to a really great cause.

Great Escapes

O

kay, the title may be a little misleading, especially if you thought this column would be about German POW camps or perhaps chase scenes from The Fast & the Furious or Bullitt. This is about escaping the everyday, you know, the doldrums of too many sunny days in a row or owning a fully operational vehicle. Although we’re in the throes of cruise night season, there are times when vehicular virtuosos and their families long to take a new road, far away from home. With that in mind, here are three unique vacation destinations suited to automotive enthusiasts that may include a gift shop, café or access to other activities passengers may enjoy. Hollywood Star Cars Museum, Gatlinburg, Tennessee Take a tour of many memory lanes with more than 40 vehicles from popular movies, TV shows and rides previously owned by celebrities at the Hollywood Star Cars Museum. Highlights include not one but two Batmobiles, “General Lee” from The Dukes of Hazard, Back to the Future’s DeLorean and other masterpieces of steel and chrome that may bring a tear to some drivers’ eyes. What’s more, you can have your photo taken behind the wheel of some of the vehicles! Visit www.starcarstn.com for more info. Gatlinburg is situated next to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, offers easy transport with a trolley system and is home to other attractions, including Ripley’s Believe It or Not, the Amazing Mirror Maze, the Mysterious Mansion, ziplining, white water rafting and more. Ferrari World, Abu Dhabi Enjoy once-in-a-lifetime thrills, Ferrari style! If you happen to be in Abu Dhabi, set aside a day (or two) to take in the fastest roller coaster in the

world – Formula Rossa reaches 240km in 5 seconds, putting you under 4.8Gs of pressure – fly over Italy, ride shotgun with a racing champion and way more cool stuff at Ferrari World! Enthusiasts will appreciate the racing apparel and vintage and modern car models at the Ferrari stores, and if you’re hungry for Italian cuisine, the park’s restaurants all feature menus inspired by Maranello, home of Ferrari. The park is located on Yas Island, where you’ll also find the Yas Marina Circuit, home of the Formula 1™ Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. For more info, visit www.ferrariworldabudhabi.com. The National Automobile Museum (The Harrah Collection), Reno, Nevada Tired of tiptoeing through immaculate exhibits of vehicles surrounded by white walls, marble floors and not much else? Yeah, me too. The National Automobile Museum places some of its collection of more than 200 cars into authentic streetscapes, featuring era-appropriate artifacts, sights and sounds. You can even honk the “awoooooga” horn! Car nuts will drool over the 1938 Phantom Corsair, the 1949 Mercury driven by James Dean in Rebel Without a Cause, Elvis’s 1973 Cadillac Eldorado and more. Be sure to get the audio tour and explore each exhibit. And yes, there’s a gift shop too. Visit www.automuseum.org for more info. Reluctant passengers should head south to MidTown Reno for shops filled with quirky items, vintage clothing finds and antique treasures. So there you have it – three ways to expand everyone’s appreciation of all things automotive and create some fond family memories.
