or some reason, I’m feeling picked on! As a car enthusiast, I have always felt we were something special, people with an above average knowledge of things mechanical, who were willing to keep their vehicles in tip-top shape. We help our neighbours and friends with their car problems. We act responsibly. We try to improve whatever we are driving, either performance wise or appearance wise. No self respecting car enthusiast can leave well enough alone. It appears that not everyone shares my feelings. Suddenly, I am feeling a bit like an outlaw. There are factors in play that will have a detrimental effect on both current and future enthusiasts. The Drive Clean decision to end the rolling age-based exemption is nothing more than an attempt to keep all the people who invested enormous amounts of money in testing equipment from storming their offices and doing harm to the management. Still keeping with Drive Clean, currently they are seeking public comment on a proposal to make emission tests annual once a vehicle reaches twelve years old. This, when by their own admission 80% of the twelve-year-old vehicles pass! Moving over to registration, what will we do when the availability of authentic donor bodies dries up? If you are building something based on a fiberglass body or one of the steel replicas, how are you going to register it? Currently, the only legitimate means of registration is as a Kit Car. Thus, your car will be registered as a 2006 vehicle. Loads of ramifications here, mostly involving insurance. Next up is the insurance industry. For some reason, there has been a complete lack of interest in insuring any type of modified car. With the exception of companies like Lant, Whetter-Oaklin and Zehr (whose policies require some use restrictions and age of vehicle limitations) no one seems interested in talking

to you. Just mention the word modified to your insurer and look out, they have dropped you like a hot potato. This one I really don’t understand. An enthusiast with a modified car will have invested countless hours improving his vehicle, will guard it as if it was the Queen’s jewellery, and drive it only in the best weather. Think of how limited the insurer’s exposure is to someone with one of these cars, yet they avoid them like the plague. Some of you may say, all my cars are older than 1988 so none of this affects me. Yes, that is true, but what happens in the future to those cars built after 1988 that will certainly attract the car enthusiast. The Corvettes, Mustangs, the current crop of Hemi-powered cars and most certainly the new Camaro (if GM decides to build it, and I hope they do) won’t they become collector cars someday? Do I have a solution? Not yet, but I am thinking about it. Meanwhile, if you have any ideas, solutions or other thoughts, drop me a line. I would love to hear from you. E-mail me at bmcj@performanceinmotion.ca. Meanwhile, spring is here. Let’s get those cars out of the garages and onto the streets now, before they try to take them away from us!

Letters After receiving my copy of Performance in Motion (Feb/Mar 2006), I needed to write and compliment your writers on an absolutely awesome article, “50 Years of messing with cars.” It was grand to be lead down memory lane of some very dedicated young men (well, at heart anyway). The Roadmates have set a very lofty standard for other car clubs to try and reach, and every member present and past needs to be grandly congratulated. From our car club – Mississauga Classic Car Club – congratulations and thank you for leading the way. It is hoped that clubs being formed today either in antique, street rodding or imports can even hope to serve the community as well as these gentleman have for 50 years or even still be together for that period of time. I also hope that Performance In Motion will continue to highlight other clubs in Ontario with the history of the Roadmates and who have added to the rich history of our sport (although this may be very hard to do). Again to the Roadmates, congratulations and keep up the great work. To Bob and his staff, a great article and thank you for highlight our history and those that have lived it. Blaine Shaw on behalf of Mississauga Classic Car Club Thanks for the kind words Blaine, it is always nice to hear from our readers. We try to create a quality all-Canadian magazine, and it’s gratifying to know our effort is appreciated. The Roadmates deserve all the accolades they have received, and our respect for their longevity. While it may be difficult to find a car-club with their history, we’ d be glad to feature other car-clubs occasionally in the future. We welcome everyone’s thoughts for future articles, questions, comments, complaints, love letters or hate mail at the address below. -Ed.

This rolling Billboard is designed to be noticed…

R

eaboro, Ontario, is a rural community near Lindsay most notable for its lush rolling farmland. The surrounding area is home to numerous, prosperous looking horse farms. In one little corner, just off Highway 7, there are more than the normal amount of horses. You see Susan and Chris Graham operate their business “The Airbrush Shop” from their corner of land in Reaboro. To advertise their custom paint work and sign business, Chris has built a number of specialty vehicles utilizing all his skills in fabrication and paint work. Currently, their garage contains two of these projects, an award-winning 1969 Chevelle SS and the object of our interest in this story, “The Road Blaster”. The Road Blaster began life as a 1991 Buick Roadmaster Wagon. Chris wanted a rolling billboard to tell everyone about the business and instead of just another truck, he settled on this station wagon. It would fit the bill perfectly. There was room to haul all of his sign-writing paraphernalia, deliver finished projects and still give Susan and Chris a luxurious ride. To enhance their wagon, first the chassis was completely rebuilt and fitted with adjustable Air Ride suspension. Their wagon can be raised and lowered on command, depending on the type of terrain they are driving on. To

enhance the look, 20” chrome wheels were fitted on the front with a full 22” pair mounted at the rear. Motivation comes from a 10-1 compression small block Chev engine fitted with fuel injection and reworked cylinder heads. Comp Cams provided the camshaft and valve train. Power runs through a GM700R4 transmission hooked to a limited slip 10-bolt GM rear end. With the power and stance now in hand, they turned their attention to the external. The front sheet metal was replaced with the front clip from an Impala SS. All the lumps and bumps were smoothed, door handles shaved, tailgate smoothed and a rolled rear pan fabricated. Even the roof was smoothed. The tailpipe was “frenched” into the lower quarter panel on the passenger side. By doing this, Chris guaranteed nothing would be dragging when the wagon was lowered to the maximum. Under the hood, the firewall and wheel wells were smoothed, unnecessary holes fi lled and a custom made air breather cover was created. In the interior both front and rear seats were restyled, then upholstered in two toned grey and red fabric. A stylized “R” that matched Chris’ unique Road Blaster emblem was embroidered into the headrests. All the interior plastic and metal parts were painted with House of Kolor, Kandy Apple Red. And

Chris airbrushed his unique “Road Blaster” emblem onto the dash. Now, all that was left was the exterior. Spray guns were unloaded, and air brushes readied. This is where Chris excels: the upper part of the body was painted House of Kolor Kandy Apple Red; the lower portion was treated to a custom silver/champagne mix. Once the base colours were dry, flames were added to the body sides and hood. Using four colours to create an almost electric look, flames were painted in a darker silver, Tangelo Orange, Ultra Orange and Kandy Yellow. As with all projects, the devil is in the details, this is where Chris really shines. Pinstripes were laid on the tailgate, the hood and the flames were outlined. Trim pieces were airbrushed in place, and “Road Blaster” emblems now adorn the hood, and sides of the body. Finally Chris lettered his “Airbrush Shop” advertising on the side windows. Standing back and viewing the overall project, you have to admit that the “Road Blaster” is far better looking, far more interesting than the stock Roadmaster they started with. The “Road Blaster” was completely fabricated and built at the “Airbrush Shop”. Even

though this was an in-house project, Susan and Chris noted that they could not have done it alone. They are quick to thank friends and neighbours, Cam Sutton and Joe Verwey, for all their help. Just another trailer queen? Nope, with only 300 km on their completed car, Chris hit the road for the 2005 Hot Rod Power Tour, driving from Reaboro to Florida where they joined the tour; by the time summer was over, they had clocked 18,000 kms, without any problems. What’s next? Well, they still have their 69 Chevelle (watch for a story on it in a future issue of PIM) and work has begun on a 57 Chevy 210 to fit in Susan’s side of the garage. Chris is talking about Hilborn injection and “Killer” paint. We will be there to get the shots when it is done. Oh and the horses, well, in addition to bundles of them under the hood of the Chevelle and the Buick, Susan also has two real ones, just to keep life interesting.

It’s the little details that make a good car great. Chris recessed the tailpipe into the rear quarter panel assuring him extra ground clearance when the suspension is at its lowest.

CAN AM

Stock/Super Stock Association

Gene Emes, 2003 SS/TB S-10 Story and Photos by: Victoria Smith

They’re a perfect blend of muscle car-era horsepower and modern technology. They’re 60s grocerygetters and modern sport compacts in disguise. Stock and Super Stock are two of drag racing’s most unique classes. And they’re turning impressive quarter-mile times at a drag strip near you.

T

he Can-Am Stock/Super Stock Association was formed to give these unique cars an additional place to race outside of traditional NHRA and IHRA events. “With national events taking longer and longer to complete, the average racer can’t always make that kind of time commitment,” said FJ Smith, series tech director. “We decided to form our association to provide an alternative place to race. It’s very competitive, but we have a lot of fun, too.” The series qualifies and races all in one day, providing high-quality drag racing in a compact format, often as a part of a track’s special event. Clearly the series’ formula of combining low-pressure competition and fun is working – it will celebrate its tenth anniversary this season, making it one of the oldest around and drawing in competitors from Ontario, New York and Michigan. And every year has marked growth in racer participation and corporate sponsorship. “I think that with the way things are going, the price of gas the way it is, and people having so many different time commitments, you’re going to see a lot more of these associations spring up. Ours is one of the best, though,” veteran racer and 2005 champion Wally Clark commented at the 2005 banquet.

12

April/May 2006 • P|M

“You can see it in the level of participation and corporate support we have,” he continued. Just how competitive is the series? The chase for the 2005 championship came down to the last race, with just one point separating first through third place. “It made it pretty suspenseful, there at the end, knowing that one small mistake could mean the difference between first and third. One point. Wouldn’t NASCAR just love to be able to make a claim like that?” joked Murray Daniel, a series volunteer. The fantastic appeal of Stock and Super Stock racing is its appreciation of both history and modern technology. Both old and new cars from the Big Three manufacturers regularly line up against one another on the starting line. “I probably wouldn’t still be racing if it wasn’t for this series. I don’t want to travel anymore,” said Can-Am racer Barrie Poole, who raced in the early years of Super Stock. Poole competed against legends like Ronnie Sox, of Sox & Martin fame. In fact, Poole was the first Canadian to win an NHRA National Event – the 1970 Winternationals, in Pomona, California. Then, Poole raced a 1968 Cobra Jet Mustang. Now, he races a 1985 Ford Thunderbird in GT/E.

On the other side of the spectrum, Tom Simon races a familiar sight at every race track – a 1969 Camaro. Simon’s Camaro features a modified production engine and runs impressive nine-second times. Another feature of the series is the family aspect. Many second-generation racers have gotten their start in the Can-Am series. One example is Kirk and Mike Vanni. The two sons of long-time racer Vince Vanni are regular competitors in the series. Kirk finished second in the 2005 season after driving his 1985 Cutlass to a win at Toronto Motorsports Park. Another second-generation racer is Victoria Smith, who started her racing career with the series. “It’s been a great place for me to learn. The atmosphere is great. We’re all deadly serious on the track, but once we’re in the pits, there’s a great feeling of camaraderie,” she said. The series has an 11-race schedule. Ten races count for points and are split between Toronto Motorsports Park in Cayuga, and Grand Bend Motorplex in Grand Bend. One non-points event is held at Lancaster Motorsports Park in Lancaster, New York. Returning this year, is the second annual Can-Am Labour Day Nationals. The two-race weekend will be held at Toronto Motorsports

Park on September 2 and 3. Last year, over 30 cars turned out for the races. The event features a $2,500 payout to the winner and a Saturday night barbecue, another way the series combines competition and fun. Racers count their best five races towards their final points, but can attend any number of races they want. One point is given for attendance, one point for each round win, and one bonus point for winning the race. To be eligible to collect points, racers pay a membership fee. Last season, the top fifteen points finishers got their membership fee and more back, and they got to pick from a wide array of prizes from some of the biggest names in the motorsports industry. Strange Engineering, Weld Wheels, VP Fuels, Performance Improvements and HTC High Tech Coatings are just a few of the regular series sponsors. You don’t have to be a member to race, but membership has its benefits. P|M • April/May 2006

t’s amazing what can happen when things get out of hand. In 1997, when Nick Minialoff dragged home his latest acquisition, a fibreglass 1933 Ford Cabriolet body purchased from Windsor Fabrication, he had a plan. You see, Nick already had a great street rod parked in his garage, a 1937 Pontiac Coupe powered with a small block Chev. Nick’s coupe had seen lots of road miles and remains a fun car to drive. However, like many others, Nick dreamed of driving a roadster. In his mind, he was preparing to build a high-quality street driver that would turn heads wherever it went, yet would still be capable of taking Nick and his wife Louise on those long “Ol’ Coots” tours. Nick talked to Ken Stewart about the project. Nick had

worked with Ken in the past and was very happy with the quality of work he produced. With Nick’s direction, they discussed the plan the ’33 would take. The work began at Ken’s shop. Frame rails were modified to fit the plan, and an unusual Indy car-style independent front suspension was created with the coil over shocks mounted inboard, activated by a pushrod and rocker arm design. To accommodate this type of front suspension the frame was stretched four inches increasing the wheelbase to 116”. The additional wheelbase guaranteed a far better ride than the normally choppy 112” would provide. Moving to the rear, it became obvious that no regular rear suspension would be right, so Nick, Ken and Al discussed the horizontal coil-over design that op-

erated with pivoting, hand-built rockers, thus keeping the Indy car theme intact. Sixteen-inch Budnick aluminum billet wheels were fitted to BFG tires, and a General Motors LS1 engine was dropped between the frame rails. The body was fitted and a steel exhaust system built and coated. With Nick’s design, Ken formed a one-piece aluminum hood to open from the front, with smooth side panels. Things were really looking good. They were about a year into the project with the end in sight. Realizing that the car’s suspension designs were far beyond the usual street rod suspension, the possibility of moving to the next level became a reality. What about entering it at Cobo Hall to challenge for the “Ridler” award? The decision was made. In-

stead of a street rod, they were now building a “Ridler” contender. This led to a complete review of the project. After a year, they had to look at everything they had done with a far more critical eye. The only real change required was a redesign of the exhaust system; coated steel would no longer suffice, stainless was now required. The stainless exhaust was then custom matched to a set of polished stainless headers from stainless works. All the individual parts now demanded a far higher level of finish. Nick soon became friends with the folks at Mayfair Plating. The number of parts to be plated boggled the mind. Hours were spent in Nick’s garage smoothing and polishing even the most obscure part. If they were to have any chance at all, everything had to be perfect. P|M • April/May 2006

In March 2005, eight years after conception, “Nick’s “33” was rolled onto the show floor at COBO hall in Detroit. Potential “Ridler” Award contenders are carefully scrutinized, only the top eight vehicles are allowed to participate. Imagine the disappoint-

In February 2006, “Nick’s ‘33” competed and won the inaugural “Dean” award at Toronto’s Speedorama. [See page 18 for complete details.] Watch for his car at a show near you, look hard and long at the fit, finish and fine details built into it.

Nick’s ‘33 became one of the “Great Eight” at COBO Hall seams must be perfect, with gaps kept to a minimum. There could be no rough spots, no overspray and no poorly fitted parts. If they were to be taken seriously in Detroit, nothing could be left to chance. Once he had everything completed to both his and Nick’s satisfaction, Mike sprayed the two-tone custom mixed finish using Sikkens paints, with the upper portion of the body in Burgundy and the bottom in Titanium. Things were looking good. Now, it was time to create the interior, one that would fit with the top quality work already completed. Nick provided the design

a great car to compete seriously for prestigious awards like the “Ridler.” The build book showing the steps taken along the way and the display created would be an integral part of each cars presentation. Wanting his car to be the focal point, Nick created a simple yet elegant display with numerous mirrors positioned to show off the undercarriage details. Aluminum stanchions were custom built to allow one side of the car to be shown with the wheels removed, matching stanchions were built into the railing surrounding the display. At last the project was about to be shown to the public.

ment you would feel if a project you had worked on day and night for years were not accepted when you get to the show! Well, that was not the case for Nick. He was designated one of the “Great Eight.” He had achieved something that few Canadians have ever achieved. He was competing for the “Ridler.” Although not winning, the satisfaction received from the glowing accolades of his peers made all the work worthwhile. In addition to the recognition in Detroit, “Nick’s ’33” also went on to win the Grand Champion Award at the 2005 Performance World Car Show in Toronto.

What do you do now? After all the time and effort expended what will be the fate of “Nick’s ‘33,” plans are afoot to remove some of the show only brake parts and turn this car into a true highend driver. Plus work has begun on a Corvette for Nick’s wife Louise to drive. Who knows it might just become the next “Dean” award winner. Special thanks to “The Team”: Ken Stewart, Mike Steinsland, Al Haringa, Wayne Hennings, Terry Dyck, Gary Nolan, and Marty Leivo.

The “Dean” Award

Tribute to a Canadian Automotive Pioneer Story by: Thomas Andrews • Photos by: Peter Robinson

his years Speedorama marked the start of a new era. After discussions with a number of interested parties Gary Wallace promoter of the Speedorama series of shows, has created a perpetual trophy in honour of legendary Canadian car show promoter and publisher “Dizzy Dean” Murray. In 1965, recognizing the lack of Canadian content in the racing publications of the day, Dizzy established Wheelspin News. Its mandate was to cover all things Canadian involving Motorsports. In addition to his work at Wheelspin, in 1975 Diz promoted his first Motion car show, again supporting the Canadian car enthusiast. Over the next 14 years Motion grew to be the premier indoor car show in Eastern Canada. Finally in 1989, feeling he had taken Motion to a level he could never again equal, Dean sold the show and retired. The “Dean” award recognizes the help and support Dean willingly provided to the Canadian car enthusiast during his prestigious career, and will be awarded annually to the most outstanding Canadian car on display at the yearly Speedorama show held in Toronto. Along with the award comes the largest cash payout in Canadian car show history, a minimum of $8,000. with the potential of raising the total to a full $10,000. A fitting annual tribute to a Canadian automotive icon.

Speedorama promoter Gary Wallace, Dizzy Dean Murray and Bob McJannett who introduced Dean at the Friday night unveiling of “The Dean” award.

This year’s winner was the 1933 Ford Cabriolet of Nick Minialoff. See our feature on “Nicks 33” in this issue on page 14.

SPEEDORAMA 2006

Back where it all began!

T

he first indoor car shows in Toronto were held at the Fort York Armaries, then moved to the Queen Elizabeth building, before the Speed Sport series of shows settled into the Automotive building in the early 1960s. It was to the Automotive building that Gary Wallace has moved his Speedorama car show. Those of us who were involved back in those early days had a true feeling of nostalgia, as we returned to this purpose-built art deco building. This is really a great venue to hold a cus-

tom car show. The Automotive building is far more interesting than the sterile display spaces currently being built today. This year’s show had a nostalgia theme, and lots of cars from the past were spruced up and returned to the patch of concrete they had been shown on in those golden days. However, current day cars were not ignored, they were well represented with displays from tuner fans, drag race cars, muscle cars and classics. Chip Foose of “Overhaulin” fame spent Saturday and Sunday autographing anything

that people wanted him to sign. He took time with every person who came to see him, some spent up to four hours in line to get a moment of Chip’s time. Throughout the two days, he proved that what you see on TV is the real deal. No one could have been more giving and gracious. It will be interesting to see what Gary will come up with in 2007; he is promising to continue to grow and improve Speedorama. You can bet your gold cowboy boots we will be there to record the event.

Cliff Waller from Mothers, Speedorama promoter Gary Wallace, with Lynn and Chip Foose - just before Chip started his marathon autograph session. Saturday morning, the spectators were lined up around the building.

Rob Sporing’s, Tony Pontieri driven, 526 cubic inch, 14-71 supercharged 1957 Chev Pro Mod. The Roadmates kicked off their 50th celebration with a great display of their cars.

Ed & Lynn McLean’s Boyd Coddington built, Zipper bodied, Oakland Roadster Show-winning, 32 Ford Roadster. Kevin Dundas’ Hemi powered Nostalgia Super Stock drag racer. One of the more subtle cars on the show floor was Bill Snow’s “Frostbite” 1969 Volvo P1800. Ultra smooth body work, silver on silver flames are all combined to make an outstanding vehicle. This Z24 350 Chev engine with a Holley fuel injection system rests between the fenderwells.

Paola Costa’s super smooth 1996 VW Golf turned many heads during the show. Ken Stewart and the Legendary Motorcar crew built this 1969 Corvette vintage racer for the boss Peter Klutt, who took it to Watkins Glen, setting a track record before winning the race.

Speedorama is not just cars. Jason Battersby showed his hand built custom bicycle “Tequila Sunrise”. 1940 Lincoln Zephyr coupe of John and Mary McGill features a complete drive train upgrade with 302 fuel injected Ford power.

Remember those wild show cars of the 60s? Mark Adams had his hand built “Cinderella” coach on display to celebrate those wild times.

The Coasters had five cars in their display including Aaron Roberts’ chopped 53 Buick and brother Brandon’s flamed 54 Dodge. These guys know how to have fun.

Tony Presto unveiled his new blown alcohol 67 Chevy II at the show and took home a whack of hardware. P|M • April/May 2006

Keith Losier’s much modified 2005 Chevy Cobalt S/S won many awards at the show. Jack Dewaards Brantford based Hemi powered 32 Ford pickup had a period correct, modified flathead engine as cargo. Mike Seguin’s owner-built 1934 Ford three window coupe looks great in its red on red livery. Charlie Haviland retired his AA/A Charlie Horse in 1970 having run a best ET of 8.01 seconds at 170 MPH. Alan Thompson is a huge American Graffiti fan. To prove it he built his John Milner look-alike 32 Ford five window coupe. The film version never looked this good. This 1971 Plymouth Hemi Cuda makes its home at Murray Tofflemire’s garage in Belle River, Ontario.

The

Baer Facts

Story by: Len Sly

O

ur friends at Baer Brake supply performance braking systems for all types of high performance applications. No matter if you just want to improve the type of rotors you are running or add a full on race brake system, Baer has the parts. Recently, we were quizzing them on the correct method of bleeding a brake system. To say we were surprised, would be an understatement. We come from the school that pumped feverishly and then tried to drive the pedal through the floor. Oh, how wrong we were.

about bleeding your brakes.

It is a common misconception that bleeding the brakes is done with pressure. In fact, if you were taught the two-man process there is a strong chance you think the object is to see how far you can shoot the fluid out of the caliper or wheel cylinder! Not true. The Baer engineers explain it this way. A slow smooth stroke and gentle pressure will ensure your brakes are properly bled. The key is to gently, but firmly, move the fluid through the system, while displacing the air trapped in the lines. The feverish pumping can actually cause the fluid to become more aerated.

To do the job you need: A properly sized box-end wrench, a piece of clear plastic tubing that will fit over the the bleeders, a container of good quality brake fluid, and a friend to help. Then just follow these six steps. 1. Fill the master cylinder, pouring it slowly to keep from aerating the fluid. 2. Move to the farthest caliper from the master cylinder. Attach the hose to the bleeder putting it into a container. Open the bleeder and VERY SLOWLY stroke the brake pedal until fluid comes out. Close the bleeder. 3. Now its time to start the bleeding. Have your helper very slowly, with modest pressure stroke the pedal one time until hydraulic resistance is found. When he is holding steadily, open the bleeder, letting the pedal go to the floor or until it stops, close the bleeder and tell him you have sealed the system. 4. Repeat this sequence (never stroking the pedal more than once) until all signs of air are purged, there are no bubbles in the plastic tube. Check the master for fluid; if you let it run dry it’s back to square one. 5. Tap the caliper to dislodge any reluctant air bubbles, then bleed one last time. 6. Move to the next farthest bleeder from the master and repeat steps 1 through 5. Continue until all four corners have been bled. Once you are finished wipe everything clean, recheck that the bleeders are tight and test for any seepage or leaks. Properly bled brakes ensure that your system works at maximum efficiency. What could be better than that?

Tools: A 6 point box end wrench that fits the bleeder; a container of fluid to keep the master cylinder filled; flex tubing; and a container to save the fluid as you bleed each wheel.

Attach the hose to the bleeder putting it into a container. Open the bleeder and VERY SLOWLY stroke the brake pedal until fluid comes out. Close the bleeder.

Bleeder Valve Wrench Bleeder Tube

Tube must be submerged in Brake Fluid

Have your helper very slowly stroke, then hold the pedal down with the same amount of pressure.

Open the bleeder letting the pedal go to the floor, close the bleeder and repeat this sequence until all signs of air are purged, then move on to the next wheel.

DNA Story by: Thomas Andrews Photos by: Robert Michaels

It’s great when you find a Canadian company breaking new ground. Direct Natural Airflow is one of those companies.

DNA

CEO Justin Moore, is a car enthusiast. After completing his schooling in tool and die fabrication, plus a course in business management, he took the unusual road to business success. Instead of a job in his trade, he went to work at a speed shop. This led to a performance warehouse position where he worked at a number of different jobs. Then he moved to a manufacturer and even took a turn as a manufacturer’s rep. All throughout this time, he was learning the performance business, learning from his peers. At the same time, he was building a 1986 S10 show truck. He built the truck around a tube frame of his own design. It was here where the seeds for DNA were sewn. As is usually the case, necessity produces technical breakthroughs. There was not enough room under his creation for suitable mufflers. He didn’t want anything with packing or perforated tubes, since his business experience showed him that these were the cause of most muffler failures. Justin and his friend John Stewart began to play with muffler designs to fit in the

30

April/May 2006 • P|M

space available, they knew that they wanted a muffler that would deaden the sound without the addition of any type of packing. After a lot of trial and error they came up with a suitable design that met their requirements. This was in 1991. Fast forward to 1998, Justin wanted to take the muffler idea to the next level. He wanted to create his own business. Again they began to work on prototypes, once they had a working model they began the patent process, It took almost five years, but at last they were rewarded with the necessary patents to protect their design. Work began to turn their ideas into a viable product suitable for the enthusiast market. DNA was born. DNA mufflers feature a unique, patented sound diffuser design that offers 95% free flow with a deep throaty sound. Best of all this design prevents the annoying in-car drone common to many performance mufflers. They come in two variations, street versions (Gen 1) built 100% from T304 stainless and the high performance (Gen II) version built from light-

weight B2 stainless. They are fully welded, have no cost saving crimps, and come with a five year limited warranty. Starting with only one employee and no distribution Justin has grown DNA to its current size, seven employees with distribution in Canada, the U.S. and Australia. Their web site offers before and after sound bites that demonstrate the DNA sound. “Our mufflers are not for everyone”, notes Justin, “with the amount of handwork in their manufacture, and the high quality of the components, they don’t come cheap. However, if you have a high performance application and do not want to compromise horsepower, our muffler will fill the bill.” DNA continues to work on new products, expanding the applications and creating Gen III. This year they are offering a $1,000 to the racer with the fastest quarter mile pass using their mufflers. Check the website for contest rules, www.tunedproducts.com.

Prototype work starts here. Laser cut flat stock is rolled to create the basic muffler body.

The secret of the DNA design is the rotationally welded sound diffusers. These offer 95% free flow, plus great sound without packing or perforated tubing.

This shot gives you a better idea of rotational sound diffuser technology. P|M • April/May 2006

erformance Improvements celebrated the opening of their tenth location on March 18th with a one day Grand Opening Extravaganza. Manager Mike Bennett with the support of Jerry Harper and a number of other P.I. employees welcomed local car enthusiasts to their brand new store. During the day the aisles were fi lled with people taking advantage of the special prices, enjoying the free coffee, doughnuts, and hotdogs and participating in the door prize draws that were held throughout the day.

The weather co operated, even though the temperature remained cold, we had bright sunshine most of the day. Jerry Harper got the tough guy award for driving his topless, big block powered, T bucket. Everyone had a good time and enjoyed themselves. “I hope all the car enthusiasts in the area drop by” said Mike, “We have lots of new items to interest everyone.” Visit Mike and Jerry at 180 Davis Drive in Newmarket, right across from the Tim Hortons! This couple seemed very happy with their purchases. Mike Bennett and Jerry Harper smiling beside Gerry’s winter ride. Car Show

One of the best RideSpeak conversations I had was with Martin Carlin, a member of the team at ProRides in Pittsburgh who laboured over the 1-1/2 year restoration of this SR61 1961 Ford Starliner. It was even listed as “The Real Mean Green Machine” in ads for the show. Here’s how the discussion went:

Undercover Either spring is in the air or an article is due when I find myself suggesting that my car-crazed husband and I take in the sights at a show. One geared to optimum automotive performance. Ulterior motives were involved; I needed a crash course (forgive me) in RideSpeak. It’s that foreign language spoken by men normally found lying underneath or bent over the engines of coveted vehicles in all states of repair. It’s spoken with more frequency during warmer months and special occasions…like Performance World 2006. It’s amazing what $18.00 will get you these days: a Ginsu knife set or a well-rounded education. Allow me to demonstrate: English: “Wow, neat car. Too bad it’s so low to the ground.” RideSpeak: “Excellent frame-up restoration. And she’s dropped. Cool.” See? Piece of cake. It only gets tricky when proud owners assume you’re fluent. I’m not, but I tried to get all the details down in my handy little notebook. Pay close attention fellow passengers, and see how one woman blended into another culture without incident. I left Funkmaster Flex in the back hall with the strobe lights, pounding bass and dry ice so that I could hang with the classics. It’s always best to focus on the rides you can actually appreciate. That way you’re not a total impostor.

Martin: She’s got a 920 horsepower motor and a Richmond 6-speed transmission. Take this 1966 GMC Suburban, for example: English: Love the colour! And all the shiny bits too. Ridespeak: This one’s a true sleeper. She’s been lowered but not slammed—and take a look at those rims. Street machines, street rods, trailer queens, stock cars and a fine gathering of modern machines surrounded me. Add in the aroma of pizza and the allure of fresh fudge, and I was feeling pretty good. Of course, when you wander around with an open notebook and camera, car nuts want to come over and chat. About cars. I’d like to thank the many enthusiasts who spoke to me about restorations, shows and expenses. A stunning 1934 Ford on display was named “Empty Pockets” for that reason alone.

Bonnie: She’s gorgeous! What makes her so popular? Martin: Starliners have that old school appeal and an awesome stance about them. Bonnie: Air ride suspension too, nice. What’s the SR for? Martin: Summit racing. She’s street legal. Bonnie: Sure, but has she ever seen the road? Next thing I knew, I was shown the rod’s brilliant donut footage on his cell phone. The Starliner may have ridden up to Toronto on a trailer, but this car gets driven. And I wasn’t too upset that there wasn’t a pastry in sight when Martin mentioned donuts. I was now a RideSpeak graduate. Don’t worry, tomorrow I’m going back to shoe shopping—I promise!
