ell, it looks like spring has finally arrived after a number of stops and starts. Who remembers snow and sleet on May 12!? But now the sun is shining and I am getting lots of notices about events starting. Most of the weekly cruise nights opened up on the May long weekend locally; they were: Mississauga Classic Car Club’s Friday night cruise at East Side Mario’s, Winston Churchill and Argentia starting May 17. Street Classics Cruise on Saturday, May 18 in the CTC parking lot Queensway and the East Mall, West Toronto. The real good news was the notification that the Thornhill Cruisers would be back in operation. They had lost their Bayview Glen location, and it looked like it was about to be a thing of the past. With lots of effort they were able to strike a deal and will be cruising to the CTC at 250 Silver Linden Drive (Bayview and Hightech). If you want to spend every day at a cruise, check out Old Autos. They have a very detailed list of weekly cruises in Ontario, plus loads of one day events throughout the cruising season. If cruises are not your cup of tea, the

drag strips have plowed off the snow and gotten their seasons started. In Ontario, Toronto Motorsports Park in Cayuga, Grand Bend Motorplex in Grand Bend, Shannonville Motorsports Park in Shannonville and St. Thomas Raceway Park in Sparta are all up and running a regular schedule. TMP, Grand Bend and Shannonville also have road courses where you can improve your driving skills lapping the track. Lapping is also encouraged at both CTC Motorsports Park, Bowmanville, and Calabogie Motorsports Park, Calabogie. Combine any of these with trips to the local oval tracks or the automotive swap meets and your high performance car fever should be fulfilled. So the fun begins, get out there and enjoy your cars, our season is short!

Dodge Don

Don

Lebeuf spent his formative years enchanted with Chrysler products. The car magazines of the day were filled with tales of both Dodge and Plymouth’s successes on the drag strips and oval tracks. “The King” Richard Petty was winning everything NASCAR, with his STP Dodge Chargers. Don was hooked. When time came to buy his first car, it was certainly going to be a Mopar. He spent his early high school days behind the wheel of a 70 Plymouth Duster, with a 340

engine. As his Duster aged, he moved to a 73 Charger SE, filling the engine bay with the hopped-up 340 from his Duster. Since then, he has never owned anything but Mopars. Some think he has the pentastar logo sewn on his jockey shorts. Time passed, as did a number of great Chrysler products. Don considered the 1970 Dodge Charger R/T SE he owned in the mid 80s to be his all-time favourite. But family, funds and available time, had gotten in the way, so it too passed through

his hands. But he now knew what he really wanted, and would have again someday. The car you see on these pages was the result of a two-year hunt for a restorable version, finally locating one in Wisconsin. A deal was completed and the Hemi Orange Charger was whisked to Ontario. Along the way, it attracted attention and high fives, however, the most asked question was “Are you going to letter 01 on the doors and a confederate flag on the roof?” Not the image Don had in mind.


During the drive home, he and his supportive and understanding wife formulated their restoration plan. He would restore this car just as he would have ordered it from the dealer in 1970. Thus began the 8-year restoration where every nut and bolt on the car was perfected. Fingers were scarred, knuckles busted and fingernails filled with grease and dirt, but it was all worth it. Along the way, several performance modifications were made to improve certain parts of the car, but they are hidden and the car retains

its as-ordered livery. This car looks just the way a dealer would have delivered it. In 1970, the Dodge Charger R/T with the 440 six-pack engine was “the car” for the year. Legend has it that the six-pack engines could easily handle the renowned Hemis. See the sidebar for complete engine specs on Don’s Dodge. Since its debut in August 2010, Don’s Dodge won many awards, too many to list here. Suffice to say, Don has created the “car of his dreams” the one his mind’s eye had

envisioned for all those years. In July 2012, his car was displayed at the Carlisle All-Chrysler Nationals Invitational Display. Across the way was Richard Petty’s STP Dodge Charger, the car that really started Don’s love of all things Mopar. Hats off to Don Lebeuf. His 10-year quest to create the magnificent Dodge Charger he had dreamed about has been completed. Mission accomplished!

Don restored the car as he would have ordered it from the dealership in late 1969. Along the way, several performance modifications were made; however they are all hidden, and the car retains its factory delivered look.

Transform your Ride

othing makes a ride look better than new wheels and a lowered stance. Not one to leave things stock, we wanted to get rid of the wheel gap and increase the cars handling capabilities. Armed with a torque wrench, spring compressor, and some power tools, the install took about two hours.

Most companies have found that 1 inch lower provides the perfect balance without losing the factory handing characteristics of the car. One inch was not low enough for our liking. The Eibach Sportline Kit lowers the car up to 1.4 inches.

When changing out your suspension, note the routing and mounting positions of all wires, cables and brake lines. Reinstalling the lines differently from the factory position can result in damage or brake failure.

Work on one corner of the car at a time. Some OE strut assemblies have up to 10 pieces which must be assembled in the exact order in which the factory installed them. Disassemble one corner, and if you make a mistake or lose track of the order of assembly, you can refer to the corresponding assembly as a reference.

Buttoned up and back on the ground with new 18” FAST Europa wheels. You can see the gap above the tire is almost completely gone. The stance is aggressive but the ride is still decent and the handling is vastly improved.

Use Spring Compressors on the OEM spring to reduce the tension on the top of the assembly, so that it won’t shoot off when you remove the tension nut.

Ready? Jack up the car and safely support it with proper jack stands. Pop off the hub caps, remove the wheels and you’re good to go.

Use your jack to support the suspension while you disassemble. You’ll use it to do the reverse when you’re putting it back together.

The rear installation is easy. You just support the rear axle, remove the lower shock bolt and the axle will swing down allowing you to pull the springs out effortlessly. Reverse the procedure to install making sure the spring is properly in the mount.


Making them Fit Want to get flush without buying new wheels? Need some Disc Brake clearance? Wheel spacers are an inexpensive option as most don’t include any new mounting hardware, but you need to be careful when choosing thicker spacers. All wheel spacers reduce the number of threads that your lug nuts can grab onto. If you add a 15mm spacer to your vehicle, you’re taking away 15mm of wheel stud length, and that means your lug nuts won’t have as much stud to fasten themselves too. Obviously, fewer threads = greater chance of loose lugnuts. (And nobody wants loose nuts.)

Bolt-On Spacers/Wheel Adapters Bolt-on wheel spacers are the best choice to add a large amount of clearance. Bolt-on type spacers are sort of like hub extensions, they bolt on to the existing hub, and then the wheel bolts onto the spacer. Adapters can be used to run wheels from another car with a different bolt circle. You could even put FWD wheels on a RWD vehicle!

Do you have Loose Nuts? Engage more threads with these options: Up to 10mm (3/8”) Spacers ENGAGE more threads with ET (Extended Thread) Nuts These extended thread lug nuts ensure there is more thread engagement on the relatively short factory studs. These are recommended when using wheel spacers 10 mm or thinner. Also recommended for some thicker aluminum wheels. (Check first to ensure they fit your wheel’s bolt holes.)

Over 10mm (3/8”) Spacers Longer Wheel Bolts European cars running wheel spacers are strongly advised to get extended wheel studs to ensure you’ve got enough threads to safely attach your wheels. Available in Cone or Ball seat in various threads.

Longer Wheel Studs Longer studs are necessary when using wheel spacers 3/8” thick, or thicker, to allow sufficient thread engagement of the lug nuts. ARP wheel studs are chromoly steel studs are heat-treated and have a 190,000 psi tensile strength rating.

Do you have vibration problems on your newly balanced wheels? Wheel Hub Centric Rings Most wheel fitments have a gap between the hub and the centerbore. To fill the gap and ensure the fitment is hubcentric, hub rings are used. A hub-centric ring is basically a reducer bushing, designed to reduce the aftermarket wheel bore size from it’s current size to the O.E. bore size of the car you are trying to fit. • Performance in Motion •

ENGAGE

Since the thickness of an alloy wheel can differ from Original Equipment wheels, verify that your lug nuts or bolts will engage the threads. When using Wheel Spacers, verify that your lug nuts or bolts will engage the threads at least these number of turns.

nown for years as makers of slicks for the track, Mickey Thompson now has tires for the daily ride that gets driven hard. The new Street Comp tires are designed for late model muscle cars. With an asymmetrical design, big chunky tread blocks, and 300 tread wear rating, these tires are the real deal. he Warplane Heritage Museum, in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, held the second annual Dragstrip Memories show April 14, 2013. The setup of the show makes this a great family outing. You are surrounded by vintage Drag Cars, Airplanes, Fire Trucks, lots of memorabilia,

and great displays and vendors, something for everyone. Rob Potter, Tony Hayes and crew did a super job of finding new cars for 2013. The show is different from year to year, making this a must-attend annual event. The Ontario Nostalgic Drag Racers

(ONDR) were well represented as always, and held their Annual General Meeting during the show. With approximately 44 members present, you could not ask for a better venue than the Dragstrip Memories show. See you there next year!


Drive Clean in the News John O’Toole, MPP for Durham presented his petition in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario on Wednesday February 27, 2013.

It’s

a pleasure again to maintain the important role of representing the constituents in the riding of Durham and to present one of the first petitions. It reads as follows: “To the Legislative Assembly of Ontario: Whereas collecting and restoring old vehicles honours Ontario’s automotive heritage while contributing to the economy through the purchase of goods and services, tourism, and support for special events; and Whereas the stringent application of emissions regulations for older cars equipped with newer engines can result in fines and additional expenses that discourage car collectors and restorers from pursuing their hobby; and Whereas newer engines installed by hobbyists in vehicles over 20 years old provide cleaner emissions than the original equipment itself; and Whereas car collectors typically use their vehicles only on an occasional basis, during four to five months of the year; Therefore, be it resolved that the Ontario Legislature support Ontarians who collect and restore old vehicles by amending the appropriate laws and regulations — like the Drive Clean act — to ensure vehicles over 20 years old and exempt from Drive Clean testing shall also be exempt from additional emissions requirements enforced by the Ministry of the Environment and governing the installation of newer engines into old cars.

rowing up in Mexico City, Ruben Hernandez didn’t have many opportunities to see low riders. His dad was a car guy, but the family ride was a VW Beetle. Most drag races involved VW Golfs versus Jettas. One fateful day, an issue of Lowrider magazine fell into Ruben’s hands, and he became smitten with the ’64 Impala body style. Something about its unique roof line really spoke to him. Years later, Ruben found himself in Canada, and had the opportunity to see some low riders up close and hopping.

Right then and there, the hunt began for a 1964 Impala he could call his own. In 2001, a suitable ‘64 was found; it became his daily driver for a few years. A mild restoration began in his garage, but it was tough getting work done while concentrating on York Abatement, Ruben’s mold & asbestos removal company. Ruben had two important people in his life to help create the car you see before you. Most importantly, it was the support from his loving wife Susana, who encouraged him to build the car of his

dreams. Another big piece of the puzzle was meeting Jeff from Switches & Thangs, who had the talent to take the car to the next level. This was a true frame off restoration, where more work was put into just the frame than some entire cars! The frame was fully wrapped with a belly split to handle the abuse Ruben was planning on dishing out. The welds were smoothed in preparation for a show-quality paint job. The body was sent to Detroit to be sanded and prepped before being coated in the deep blue base coat by “Fons.” Then


Chilango [chee-lan-go] is a Mexican slang term used to refer to a person from Mexico City, or an adjective to refer to something from Mexico City.

Ruben flew “Kandy & Chrome” up from LA for one of his custom paint jobs. That’s when all the patterns, details and special touches that make this car a unique piece of automotive art were created. This is a car you truly have to see in person to appreciate. Once the paint was dry, it was brought back North for assembly by Jeff at Switches & Thangs. Not that Ruben wasn’t working on his ride too. He hand-polished all the many stainless lines throughout, along with any other job Jeff didn’t want to do! Almost everything on this car is chrome-plated. Yes, that is a chrome-plated transmission hidden underneath the car.

When I say everything has been chromed, I mean even the seat bracket. Yes the nut and washer that bolted it in too! Most of the chrome work was done by Taj & Dan at MetalCoaters in Malton. If it isn’t chromeplated or polished aluminum, it’s been painted blue. Ruben wanted to stress that a project this big couldn’t be completed without a lot of help. “Big thanks go first of all to Susana, for her support and encouragement. Jeff Forgione and Danny from Switches & Thangs; Fons; Kandy & Chrome; Sasha from OnPoint Dyno; Mike Bennett and all the Performance Improvements guys; and all

my Majestics brothers,” said Ruben. The ‘64 has already been featured in the front room at Megaspeed. Next up is the Majestics BBQ in Detroit, before heading to the Lowrider super show in Las Vegas. Let’s hope Ruben can keep it looking clean until then. After waiting 12 years for the ride of his dreams, he’s itching to get it on the road and drive it hard – just like he should!

you are driving a classic car, the chances that your taillights are difficult for the driver following to see is almost 100%. Nothing like worrying about someone running into the back of your ride while out for a drive. Well worry no more. There are complete Light Emitting Diode (LED) replacement taillights or replacement LED conversion kits for popular enthusiast vehicles. There are even flush mount LED kits that look like the classic lights, but are simple to mount on any flat surface. LEDs light up in microseconds, draw less from your car’s electrical system, and have no filaments to break. These things are super bright and last for over 100,000 hours of operation. Models are available for early Chevrolet and Ford cars and trucks, Tri-Five Chevrolet, early Camaro, Chevelle, Mustang and most Corvettes — plus many others.

Installation could not be simpler. For the conversion kits you simply remove the OE lens, take out the taillight bulb, plug the LED unit into the bulb socket and install the lens. No drilling required except for flush mount models LED replacement taillights bolt-on exactly as the OE taillight. Nothing could be easier and the flush mount models only require two small mounting holes and a hole for the bulb socket. LED’s are incased in epoxy to prevent problems from vibration or shock. What’s in your Oil? Older cars need Zinc, but newer cars don’t. Guess which cars most oils are made for.

W

ell, times are changing and so are the motor oils that are available. Today’s catalyst-equipped cars require oils with far less Zinc Dialkyldithiophosphate (ZDDP commonly called Zinc) than in previous oils. Earlier engine configurations require zinc and phosphates to prevent engine wear. Recently rebuilt engines, that do not require the emissions equipment of the day, still need the same additives as in the past. Particularly flat tappet applications, engines with high valve spring pressures, or those driven in high rpm situations. Zinc and Phosphates cause the catalytic converters on today’s modern vehicles to fail prematurely. Once this was confirmed, the car manufacturers began lobbying to have these additives removed or decreased in oil. In the last 20 years, makers of oil decreased these chemicals from their formulas, thus preserving the life of the converters. Today’s late model engine configurations with low valve spring pressures and multi-overhead cam designs with roller tappets do not require the amount of wear protection that earlier engines do. The downside has been the lack of protection given to the earlier engine packages. Newly rebuilt engines using these modern oils began to succumb to premature failure due to the lack of sufficient anti-wear films. In some instances in true high performance rebuilds that demise was right on the engine dyno. Race teams and high performance street engine builders took notice. The hunt for solutions began.

Break in Oils Breaking in a new motor is like painting a new cinder block wall - the rate of consumption is extremely high because the surface is soaking it up.

Smaller premium manufacturers recognized the need and began to come to market with solutions. Companies like Royal Purple and Joe Gibbs Driven offer a number of oils directly aimed at correcting the problems. Both companies make specific break in oils with high levels of zinc and phosphorus to protect new parts during the crucial break in period. These oils are the ones you would run either for the first 600 to 800 kms, or when breaking your engine in on a dyno. After the break-in period, both manufacturers offer high performance street and race oils that provide the maximum film strength required by high performance and modified power plants. These oils are designed to protect your engine; current “regular” oils are designed to protect the emission equipment built into today’s late model cars. Specialty shops are very knowledgeable on these products and capable of making sure you get the right product for your needs. Remember the price of premium lubrication products is far less than the cost of repairing failed engine components. To get the best possible results from your performance engine be sure you are using the right oils formulated with the critical balance of zinc, phosphorous and detergents. You will be glad you did!

e’ve had enough bad experiences with fuel additives to know that most of them are Snake Oil. Hearing that Royal Purple was coming out with one made us scratch our head. We’ve had enough good experiences with their synthetic motor oils to take a closer look. Max-Clean is a high performance synthetic cleaner that is supposed to maximize the performance of your fuel system. It’s actually a 3-in-1 product, it not only cleans the fuel system but it is a performance enhancer and fuel stabilizer. It’s made of stateof-the-art detergents to deeply penetrate and clean injectors, carburetors, intake valves and combustion chambers. Max-Clean is safe for gasoline and diesel engines. Since it was spring cleaning time at home, I decided to do my part by cleaning my engine. For most applications, 1 ounce of Max Clean per gallon of fuel is sufficient for a one-tank clean-up of the fuel system. If the fuel system is known or suspected to be heavily varnished or loaded with deposits, you can double the dosage. I used two cans for a true Max Clean experience. After clean-up, 1 ounce per gallon of fuel is the recommended dose for maintaining system cleanliness every 3k to 5k miles. There is little benefit to running more than 2 ounces per gallon of fuel, but up to 5 ounces per gallon is safe.



Sharing the Keys of Knowledge The

arrival of consistent, warmer weather means that automotive enthusiasts can proudly gather on evenings and weekends with other like-minded individuals. Reluctant passengers are excited about these events, really—we just show it by rolling our eyes.

What drivers may not realize is that some event attendees don’t possess the same level of know-how, on-hand expertise or troubleshooting talent as they do. There are people out there who don’t understand how increased horsepower can improve their lives, or that torque is not a fancy lunch meat. These people are wannabe car nuts, and they need our help. Knowledge is power For drivers and passengers alike, we all have unique know-how about vehicles. Some can machine their own rotors. Others can swap out a cam shaft. And it’s the lucky few who can tell when the glove box needs organizing. If you notice someone staring at your vehicle appreciatively, ask the admirer about his or her ride. Sometimes people are afraid to ask about pimping out a vehicle, doing a ground-up restoration, or understanding the difference between wax and polish. And, sometimes, that driver may end up knowing more about superchargers than you do. Go figure. Since you’re a PI customer, odds are that you’ve got know-how to spare. So tell the poor sap thinking about upgrading a Buick Century to choose another project car, like … anything else. Sure, the newbie may not listen to you, but at least you tried. Don’t DIY alone Some projects may be DIY, but they’re not do-it-all-by-yourself. Team up with another vehicular virtuoso (or the reluctant passenger hiding behind the

lawn furniture) to help you replace that tranny—or at least let you know when two bolts are still on the driveway when you’re done. Be thankful For those who have shared the keys of knowledge with us, they deserve our thanks. They didn’t have to tell us that oil should be changed more than once a decade, or that using a Speed Bleeder means you can bleed the brake lines on your own, or that a California Duster isn’t a homeless guy from L.A. A great way to show your appreciation to the drivers who taught you what you needed to know is to show them that you’ve heard them. Follow these four keys of ride-owner responsibility: 1. Respect your ride’s limitations Seeing a Mk1 Ford Escort in F&F 6 doesn’t mean your Ford can pull those stunts. Need another example? Watch an episode of Last Car Standing. 2. Respect your own limitations Some people were born with a Haynes manual in hand. Others, a CAA card. 3. Respect the opinions of others Everybody has their favourite brand. And anything with the word “purple” in it must work better. Just sayin’. 4. Don’t touch a ride you don’t own without permission If I need to explain this, you have a short, dark future ahead of you. Without those who’ve shared their road-worthy expertise with us, we might still be driving and experiencing the road like regular people. Yeah, I feel sorry for them too.

TYPE 65 COUPE:

There were just six original Coupes ever made. Those cars captured the 1965 FIA World Championship for America in the last years before mega-money stole American roadracing from its roots and from the average guy. Despite the fact that the design never entered production, those six cars, hand-built upon 289 AC chassis, became symbolic of the end of an era. The Coupe has an aluminum and steel chassis with a composite body shell. These 6061 aluminum coil-over shocks have a ten position rebound adjustment, black powdered coated Silicone wire springs and a collar nut for quick pre-load changes. We are proud to introduce our new line of Speedshocks in steel. These nitrogen filled gas shocks are engineered specifically for hot rod applications and offered in the “Standard” length of 9 1/4” closed x 14 1/4” extended or in the “Shorty” length of 7 7/8” closed x 11 1/4” extended. They are manufactured with or without dustcovers and can be run on the front or rear end of the car in either configuration. The distinctive design of the dustcover is reminiscent of the “airplane shocks” used on early hot rods during the 40’s and 50’s.
