here we are, there has been nothing but bitter cold and too much snow to suit those of us who would rather be driving our cars. Even as this is being written (mid-February) they are threatening first torrential rains, then back to snow. Enough already! If this is climate change, it’s going the wrong way to suit me! On a more positive note, all the drag racing and short track racing venues are readying their facilities for the 2014 series. Did you know there are 34 venues in Ontario offering drag racing, race course lapping or short track racing? Lots of fun, coming soon. Go to the Inside Track website www.insidetracknews.com click on the links to see all the series, tracks, etc. in Canada. Now I would be remiss if I did not mention our parent company’s 50th anniversary. Yes Performance Improvements will celebrate 50 years in business in 2014. We have come a long way since we opened at 1268 the Queensway, on a part time basis, in May of 1964. Our goal, in the first month, was to make $95.00 profit so we could pay the next month’s rent. Those were the days! From those humble beginnings we have constantly grown our business. First by opening full time, then adding additional locations. Next came a foray into the installation business (three different ones over the years) but offsite just didn’t seem to work for us. In an effort to expand without adding more bricks and mortar, we added a wholesale division and went out into eastern Canada selling our wares to Speed Shops and Auto Parts stores. We did well on the wholesale side and enjoyed steady growth from that division of our adventure. Well enough that we were noticed by an American company interested in coming to Canada. They made us an offer we couldn’t refuse for our wholesale side and we returned to our first love, retail. During our wholesale days, we were honoured to receive SEMA’s Warehouse of the Year award in 1988. In 50 years we have had a lot of great employees come through our doors. In fact, without these dedicated individuals we would not be where we are today.

Some stayed for the long haul, while others went on to do different things. After 50 years some have even retired, something we never expected to happen in 1964. It is great to note that most of these people remain our friends. In 50 years we have had many parties and lots of fun together. We have prided ourselves in remaining a family business, with the best interest of all our people foremost. Additionally, we have made long term positive relationships with quality manufacturers and sales reps, who continue to supply us with exciting products to sell from our stores. Sadly, in 50 years we have faced some significant losses as well. We lack the benefit of Glen Laughton’s sage advice, Paul Dickie’s common sense approach and most recently Russ Baxter’s knowledge and sales abilities. Each of them is truly missed. Two years ago, we left our long time location on the Queensway to move to 87 Advance Rd. The move has given us an enormous amount of room previously unavailable. In addition, we have built a shop to house our friend Paul Spiers’ restoration business. Now if our customers have an intriguing project, they can get help from Paul to complete it. What’s in the future? More of the same. We will remain a Canadian family owned business, with our goal to sell the best quality products to our customers. Treat everyone fairly and provide intelligent information to those who ask. We are very aware that our continued success is in the hands of our customers, we appreciate your support and will continue to strive to earn it. Oh yes be sure to watch for our 50th celebration sales, the deals will be great. See you on the asphalt, don’t forget to say Hi.

McBurney, based in Niagara Falls, Ontario, operates Cardude Vehicle Restorations. Over the years, we have been pleased to bring you some of his amazing creations. In 2009, we featured the Bub Wasp his 1915 restoration of a Model T-based speedster. Later that year, we were treated to his 1952 Dodge convertible, a tribute to the custom car era. Since then, there have been many other projects mostly for customers. Finally, Jim has had time to build one of his own.

6

• Performance in Motion •

Now, if you are going to restore a car, it is best to start with good bones. Sometimes, it is even worth the waiting time taken to get it right. In 2002, Jim purchased this 1941 Ford convertible. It was one of the last vehicles built by Ford prior to the change to war production. They restarted car production in 1946. Mileage during the war years would have been few, and from ‘46 to ‘62 (16 years), the car was well looked after until it was put into storage in 1962 where it stayed till Jim took possession.

What he had bought was a really good complete car ready to be restored and renewed. As usual Jim, who is a stickler for doing things right, began by separating the body from the frame. However, progress was slow; customer’s projects always come first. In fact, it wasn’t till this year that Jim was able to complete his convertible. During the time, Jim did a complete body-off restoration, repaired and straightened anything needed, chopped the top two inches and lowered the car five inches from

stock height. Once the body was perfected, Jim painted it in base clear black. The interior was completely redone in maroon marine vinyl, and the dash wood grained. The jewel under the hood is a “Full Race” 1947 Mercury flathead engine. A 30 over 239 cu in with Offenhauser cam and heads plus an Edelbrock four carb intake with four Stromberg 97 carbs completes the power plant. The engine is attached to a Lincoln Zephyr transmission. At this moment, Jim has not been able to

really drive the car; he is looking forward to the good weather so he can drive it to local cruise nights and any car shows. Meanwhile, he was able to have is friend Paul Sontrop shoot the great photos you are looking at. Looking for someone to work on your car? Jim can be reached at Cardude Vehicle Restorations and Creations in Niagara Falls, call 905-354-4339. Oh and he’s not done yet, the list of future projects is long.

Story by Robert Michaelson • Photos by Jim Madigan

2014

is the 50th anniversary for Performance Improvements. Everyone involved is really proud of reaching this milestone. In planning different ways to celebrate, someone suggested we reproduce the 1933 Ford Coupe that Bob McJannett built and drove in those early days. The original ‘33 was built from a found ‘33 body by Ken Stewart at Linken Manufacturing with the help of Paul Dermo, Ron Dolson and Bob. They planned to build a “Hot Rod” with all the traditional features of the era (60s). The body was all steel, deeply channeled over the frame, and the top was chopped about 4”. Power was from a small-block Chevy engine with a B&M supercharger bolted to

a GM Turbo 400 trans. Front suspension was traditional dropped axle cross spring, while Ken created his own coil over shock suspension in the rear. In its day, this yellow and flamed “Hot Rod” turned many a head. Times change, however, today’s “Hot Rods” are far more sophisticated. Independent suspensions are the norm, along with disk brakes. Fuel injection has replaced carburetion. Handling and safety are as important as straight line performance. Obviously, build requirements have changed. With this in mind we went out to see just what we could find to build. Months were spent researching starting from scratch, buying someone’s unfinished project or ? Nothing really caught our eye, until we

Original 1933 Ford Coupe was chopped and channeled with a supercharged small block. The dropped axle and rear coil over suspension made it best for cruise nights only. The original frame, chassis and suspension designs are not really capable of delivering sports car performance, handling, and ride quality.

came across the Factory Five 33 Hot Rod. Factory Five Racing has been building component car kits since 1995. They are best known for their MK4 Roadster (Cobra style) kits, that have won numerous drag races, autocross, SCCA and USRRC races, and car shows. In fact Ford thinks so highly of the Factory Five product that they have displayed them at major auto shows such as SEMA. A Factory Five car won the grueling 1,500 mile Targa Newfoundland in 2006. These cars really work! For years, Factory Five head honcho Dave Smith resisted building a “Hot Rod.” He felt that the ones he had seen did not offer the handling and performance he demanded from his vehicles.

This is the base kit as delivered along with dozens of boxes of parts and components.

However, Jim Schenk his director of R&D had other ideas. He believed they could build a high performance daily driver “Hot Rod” that would meet Dave Smith’s demands. Work began and in 2008, they introduced the Factory Five 33 Hot Rod at the SEMA Show from then on the awards kept coming. After all our research the Factory Five car kept surfacing as the best way to build the tribute car we desired. Finally, one was ordered. Originally, our plan was to build the car in the showroom of our Superstore at 87 Advance Road. All of us would work on the build and all would participate in driving the car at the drags, lapping at local tracks, taking it to events etc. However, the

Project 33 has been moved to Judith Nyman’s Transportation classroom. Art Hagner (second from Left) and the build crew are ready to begin.

pressures of running the business kept us from getting started. One day one of our customers, Art Hagner, Transportation Specialist at Judith Nyman Secondary School in Brampton said “why don’t you give it to me, I’ll get the students in my class to work on it; it beats rebuilding lawn mowers etc”. What a great idea! After discussions with the school, it was agreed that Art and his class would take on the project. In November, we moved our car to Art’s shop at Judith Nyman High School and work began. To see all the photos go to www.performanceimprovements.com and click on the link to project 33. Watch our next issue for the completed car. Then the real fun begins!

One of the first jobs was to put together the pedal assembly featuring Willwood hydraulic cylinders and swing pedals.

The design goal of the car was pure vintage lines dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st century with CAD/CAM technology and race car engineering. The ultra-rigid frame is made of mig-welded, high-strength carbon steel tubing and plate steel. This unique design delivers great torsional rigidity, increased cockpit space and numerous safety features.

Here is the pedal assembly ready to install in the chassis.

Corn & Fuel Don’t Mix The Case Against Ethanol

Story & Photos By: SEMA Action Network

Fed a steady diet of corn, a staggering number of vintage vehicles in North America are now suffering from clogged arteries. The culprit? Ethanol.

T

he issue is straightforward. Countries around the world are supplementing their gasoline with biofuels, primarily ethanol. In the United States, ethanol is distilled from corn, but cellulosic ethanol can also be distilled from switchgrass, sugarcane, wood chips and other agricultural byproducts. Supplementing the petroleum-based fuel supply in this manner may be a well-intentioned effort to reduce oil dependency, but it is not cost-effective and results in severe consequences to your collector vehicle’s engine. Most new vehicles are constructed with materials that resist ethanol’s potentially harmful properties when small concentrations of the biofuel are used, such as 10% ethanol by volume (E10). However, that is not the case with older cars and current high-performance specialty parts. Condensation created by this gasoline can damage engines and result in corrosion, rust, clogging and deterioration of fuel-system components. The US Congress enacted the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) in 2005 and then set ambitious mandates for the amount of ethanol to be blended into gasoline each year, going from 9 billion gallons in 2008 to 36 billion gallons by 2022. In order to meet the ever-growing RFS biofuel mandate, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently permitted the sale of 15% ethanol (E15) in gasoline. In the process, the EPA acknowledged that E15 poses a risk to older cars and therefore made it “illegal” to fuel pre-’01 vehicles. However, the

12

• Performance in Motion •

agency is only requiring a gasoline-pump warning label to alert motorists that E15 could potentially cause equipment failure in older vehicles. The EPA’s decision has spawned a huge battle across America. A coalition of unlikely partners has come together to fight E15. They include organizations such as the SEMA Action Network (SAN) representing collector cars and their owners, along with the boating industry, lawn-equipment manufacturers and the oil industry. It also includes the food industry (corn prices are increasing as a portion of the crop is being diverted to fuel) and environmentalists (the land, transportation and energy costs to produce ethanol undermine the benefits). The battle’s outcome is still unknown. The EPA’s decision is being challenged before the US Supreme Court. In Congress, lawmakers are considering legislation to ban E15 and also reduce the RFS mandates, the driving force behind E15. A time frame for resolving the debate is unclear, but the

issue has become very contentious. While it is now legal to sell E15 in America, there are only a handful of stations currently marketing the product. The infrastructure for most stations has not yet been certified for the fuel. More importantly, most automakers have not certified their vehicles for E15. Therefore, they may void the warranty for any E15-related damage. This year states, such as Florida, Maine, Oregon and West Virginia, have taken the lead in dealing with the ethanol issue on a local level. In fact, legislation to repeal the requirement that all gasoline offered for sale in the state contain a percentage of ethanol is on a fast track in Florida. As this article went to print, the bill had been approved by the Florida House and Senate and sent to the governor for his signature and enactment into law. Currently, Florida requires that all gasoline sold by a supplier, importer, blender or wholesaler contain 9%–10% ethanol, or other alternative fuel, by volume. For auto enthusiasts in North America, the message to lawmakers and regulators about ethanol has been clear: “Hit the brakes on E15.”

Damage to SAN member Tom Shaw’s carburetor from the use of ethanol fuel.

Driven’s Carb Defender Fuel Additive is specifically formulated to protect against Ethanol corrosion and induction deposits. The 8 oz. bottle of additive treats up to 25 gallons.

Story & Photos by Andy and Rob McJannett

1 Car, 2 Drivers, 18 States, 22 Days, 9,468 km 2013 had been an interesting year. My brother Andy and I had been taking our cars out to Toronto Motorsports Park drag racing and lapping on the road course. Andy has a 2006 Chrysler 300C with a 6.1 HEMI, that he has added a cold air intake, a Diablo tune and topped by an Edelbrock E Force supercharger. My ride is a 2006 Mustang GT with the 4.6 engine, Intake, SCT tuner and Eibach lowering kit. Andy’s car is way faster, but mine handles better; on the road course, he can pull away on the straights and I catch up on the corners. Overall, we had a great time this year playing with cars.

One night we were sitting in our favourite pub, Orwells, trying to think of what else we could do. Andy had heard of the Texas Mile, a track where you could run all out for a mile. “How fast do you think my brick will go?” asked Andy. “You know their fall meet is a week before the SEMA Show.” A roadtrip idea was born. The Texas mile is run in the spring and fall each year. It is the brainchild of Jay and Shannon Matus, who got 10 friends together to run the first one in 2003. The object is simply to see how fast you can run in a standing mile. There are no lights, the course isn’t timed, a starter sends you on

your way and you get a time slip at the end with your MPH. We decided that since the course was four times as long as a drag strip, it would be four times as much fun! Well, one thing led to another, and we began to plan our road trip. We would leave Toronto heading south, stopping to visit some of our performance manufacturers, planning to arrive in Beeville, Texas, for the three-day meet. Once finished, we would continue on to Los Angeles, then to Vegas for SEMA, then home. What the heck, who wouldn’t want a chance to copilot a car faster than you had ever driven before!

Our WASP cam helped us document our trip!

The lanes of cars waiting their turn are filled with cool vehicles, from exotics to drivers to bikes. Cleaning off the tires before our next run down the mile.

We began by finding out just what would be required; what would we have to have on the car to compete. The safety rules for cars running less than 199 MPH aren’t too rigorous. (See sidebar.) We added a 2.5lb fire extinguisher, got an RCI driving jacket, SFI driving gloves and Snell-approved auto racing helmets. Your vehicle has to be in good condition, no leaks, nothing loose, speed-rated tires etc. We shod it with a set of sticky Mickey Thompson Street Comp tires. To ensure we got where we wanted to go, we installed a Parrot Asteroid Smart a navigation device loaded with features (see sidebar) and took along two Wasp action

cameras to document the fun. There are four levels of competition licensing at the Texas Mile, class C, B, A and AA with C being the slowest (slowest being a relative term) and AA the fastest. C-class drivers are limited to 165 MPH, B to 199MPH; A requires B plus qualifying passes between 180 and 200. The fastest licence AA requires A plus qualifying passes between 205 & 225. Being first-timers, we applied for class C. After successfully completing runs greater than 140, we applied for class B which would limit us to 199 MPH. If you plan to run faster than that, you must have a four-point roll bar and

5, 6 or 7-point safety harness. If you want to run 215+, you need an 8-point cage. So off we went on our excellent road trip adventure, determined to prove you could drive a carefully modified car anywhere. On our way to Texas, we decided to stop off at the Wild Turkey Distillery (free samples at 9:30am, yeah!) visited Holley and learned all about their new offerings for 2014, visited Painless Performance who showed us how carefully they made their wiring harnesses right there in Texas, impressive! Finally, we arrived in Beeville, Texas, home of the Texas mile. For the next three days, we got up early to line up to make a

pass. With over 250 participants, the waits could be long. Now, the folks who run the Texas Mile are very careful to ensure everyone has the ability to race safely. You have to run straight controlled passes, slowly going faster until they feel you are capable of making the all-out passes you sign up for. We worked up from the required 146 MPH pass to our fastest run of 168.2 MPH.

24

Our “Brick” was driven from Toronto, raced for three days then driven off for Los Angeles. We were one of very few cars not trailered in, and certainly by the time we reached home, our car was driven farthest. From Beeville to LA, we stopped and toured the MSD facility where their great ignition and fuel injection products are made. In LA, it was a tour of K&N, then

Edelbrock. These are both top-drawer facilities, but at Edelbrock, we also toured Vic’s Garage where Vic Edelbrock keeps his remarkable car collection. Touring all of these manufacturers on our trip confirmed the reasons we are selling these products. Carefully made, quality items that provide the performance their ad copies promise. Good stuff at fair prices.

Performance Directory What do you need to run the Texas Mile? 3 Days, 1 Mile, No Speed Limit The following safety equipment is required for all automobiles running up to 199 mph:

FIRE EXTINGUISHER: A 2 lb minimum, automotive BC handheld fire extinguisher, with a secure quick releasemounting bracket, within easy reach of the Driver while normally seated, belts fastened, & steering wheel in place. HELMET: Each driver must wear a proper fitting helmet that meets SNELL Foundation 2005 or newer (SA2005 or SA2010). MUST HAVE CURRENT DATES ON HELMET. NO EXCEPTIONS. SEAT BELTS: Correctly installed factory seat belts, OEM or better, is the minimum standard required. Vintage cars must have newer seat belts or harnesses. Lap belts used without any shoulder restraints are not permitted. CLOTHING: Non-synthetic fabric clothing (cotton, wool, leather etc.), covering torso, all arms and all legs, plus “tennis” shoes without holes are the minimum standard required to be worn by the driver of the vehicle. SFI approved driving gloves are REQUIRED. ROLL BAR/CAGE: A competition approved Roll Bar for an open vehicle (convertible) is mandatory unless your vehicle is equipped with a factory rollover protection system. Convertibles must run with the top in the up position. For other street cars, a 4-point Roll Bar or a 6-point cage is recommended but not required. TIRES: DOT-approved tires in good condition are required to be used. The tire speed rating must exceed the speed rating that the car is attempting to achieve. Tire Speed Rating If you want to go fast, you need tires that are up to the task. When Z-speed rated tires were first introduced, they were thought to reflect the highest tire speed rating that would ever be required, in excess of 240 km/h or 149 mph. While Z-speed rated tires are capable of speeds in excess of 149 mph, how far above 149 mph was not identified. That ultimately caused the automotive industry to add W- and Y-speed ratings to identify the tires that meet the needs of new vehicles that have extremely high top-speed capabilities. W 168 mph (270km/h) & Y 186 mph (300km/h) That’s all you need folks! Who is up for a roadtrip to Texas?

Parrot Asteroid Smart powered our Road Trip You never know who you’ll end up beside at the Texas Mile, like Rich Fossum’s twinturbo V10 2006 Lamboghini Gallardo SE that ended up going 204.3 MPH.

Android-powered touchscreen with WiFi, Apps, navigation, multimedia and Handfree calling When you’re planning to drive a 600 horsepower sedan on a 9,500-kilometre road trip, few things are more important than staying entertained, while not getting lost. We found the solution to both issues when we installed the new Parrot Asteroid Smart. By replacing the stock 300C stereo with this device, we now have navigation, hands-free calling, Internet access and the ability to play thousands of songs all in a cool touchscreen package. This was the perfect trip to test out the Parrot Asteroid navigation abilities, and see if the music options could keep us from going insane on our journey! (For the record, we were insane before going on this journey!) You can have all your digital music with you in the car without needing a box of CDs. With four USB connections, one dedicated for an iPod (which will pull up all your album art), and a Line-In connection, there isn’t much you can’t connect. Optionally, you can connect wirelessly with Bluetooth. With the Parrot ASTEROID Market you can download a variety of apps to customize it TomTom, Waze, even Facebook for those true addicts. There is also the ability to stream online music stations like Spotify, TuneIn and LiveRadio. We downloaded the free iGo voice guided turn-by-turn navigation app. An Internet connection is not needed as the maps reside on the device, so there are no hidden costs and no roaming fees. With the built-in GPS, it kept track of our speed and let us know when the speed limit of the road we were on changed. The stock voice can be changed, we made ours sound like an Australian woman (who we named Sheila).

FYI: Never stay at a Motel 6 unless you like uninvited guests.

Asteroid Smart can simultaneously connect to two phones. We also downloaded the free Mail application.

It announces your e-mails out loud and gives an alert when a new message arrives. Adapted for use in the car, it has pre-configured short replies. Connecting via Bluetooth allows for voice dialing, but even cooler, you can choose bands, albums and songs from your iPod just by speaking. Internet access is available in a variety of ways. With a compatible mobile phone: Bluetooth, USB and WIFI tethering. Using a 3G/4G USB dongle or through a WIFI access point. We used a WIFI liberty travel hotspot from Roam Mobility to keep us connected, as we travelled throughout the US without racking up huge roaming phone bills. We had excellent coverage whenever we were in a decent sized city and could tether multiple devices.

Our biggest annoyance was with glare. When the sun comes out, your reflection can become the thing you see the most of in certain situations. An antiglare screen protector would be a worthwhile addition. If your steering wheel has radio controls, there is an optional unit available to connect most compatible vehicles.

The Smart is Android powered, so there is also the ability for the tech-savy to hot rod this thing. It is possible to “side-load” Google Play and then add apps not on the Asteroid Marketplace. People with an OBDII bluetooth adapter have managed to get the TorquePro app to run. We think more performance apps would make this device a must-buy. 012 McJannett ad half 4c:09 McJannett ad 1/2

You don’t even need to look at the screen for volume and track changes. Want to change the volume, while a track is playing? Just swipe the screen up or down. Want to change the track? Swipe right (or left to go back). This is, interestingly enough, exactly how their headphones work. Parrot is not a huge name in North America (yet), but this company is one to watch. You may have seen their AR Drones. They also have a new wireless headset that is unbelievable.

From LA, it was on the SEMA show in Los Vegas for a four-day overload of all the latest products available to the car enthusiast, then it was time to go home. We decided we had had enough and longed for our own beds. So Friday evening, we left Vegas and drove straight back to Toronto stopping only for fuel and food. We

set our Wasp camera to one shot every five seconds and have a time lapse video from Vegas to home in seven minutes. What did we prove? We proved you could drive a carefully modified car an enormous number of kms with absolutely no problems. We proved you could fire a brick thru the air in excess of 168 MPH, we proved that your

Wasp camera coming off the car at 70 MPH would keep on working and suffer only a scratch, and we proved we are two brothers who really get along. The facts, one car, two drivers, one province and 18 states, 22 days and 9,468 km. Would we do it again? IN A HEARTBEAT!

Part Four!

After all that polar vortex action, drivers and passengers alike are welcoming spring with open arms. This is the time of year when drivers look upon the roads with newfound fear (due to potholes) and excitedly prepare their rides for the new driving season. Me? I’ll just sit over here and wait for the exhaust fumes to dissipate. Now just because you haven’t seen an issue of Performance in Motion since the fall doesn’t mean that this passenger has been stuck in neutral. I’ve been loading up the PVR with episodes of Restoration Garage, Counting Cars, the British Top Gear and other automotive-enthusiast must-see TV while the husband cried each time the salt truck drove by. Not only have I learned way more than I need to know about restoring fine examples of vehicular brilliance, I now appreciate how an ongoing investment in time is worth way more than letting a ride sit idle long enough to warrant a ground-up restoration. Speaking of time well spent, with all that TV watching and our annual trek to the Canadian National Auto Show, I also happened to add a few more automotive terms to my vocabulary. Once again, here they are, along with what I’m sure are the correct definitions.*

Anti-roll Bar A tool used by introverts to stop themselves from being pushed around.

Pinging The little voice in your head that pipes up when you’re doing something unethical.

Body Work What a man does when a pretty girl walks by—suck the stomach in and hold it until she’s gone. (Thanks to reader Howard Cohen for that one!)

Pump Body What people who order those expensive Bowflex fitness systems are trying to achieve.

Brake Dust The stuff that stirs up when you suddenly stop running. Clearcoat What some teenagers put on their faces to prevent more breakouts. Code Reader A heart monitor used on car owners when the repair estimate comes in. Contact Breaker What happens right before someone un-friends you on Facebook. Eco Boost When a loved one attempts to cheer you up by giving you environmentally friendly products. Feeler Gauge A new smartphone app used on dates to prevent wandering hand trouble. Freon One of the songs Elton John hasn’t recorded yet. Interval The amount of time it takes to find a lost set of keys. Numbers Matching When the phone number a woman gives you isn’t for a pizza parlour.

Rear Spoiler The dude sitting behind you in the movie theatre who gives the surprise ending away. Selector Fork An item that would save many people a lot of trouble at all-you-can-eat buffets. Shammy Shimmy’s second cousin, who’s on parole. He still blames his lawyer. Sludge The taupe-coloured casserole Aunt Velma brings to Christmas dinner each year, yet no one really knows what the heck it contains. Timing Belt A really short dress a woman mistakenly puts on when she’s running late. Tire Gauge An instrument that lets you know how much sleep you need. Waxing A painful process best left to professionals. Wheel Hub A place where people, usually bachelors who appreciate wagon-wheel coffee tables, hang out. Go ahead—impress all those car nuts hanging out in the driveway. You’re sure to give them something to talk about. Enjoy the ride.

Enjoy the ride •
