KRISTEN BALBONI + ALEX HARRILL Kristen Balboni’s career in sports reporting has taken her and her college sweetheart, Alex, all around the country. Meeting each other at the altar of the West End church Kristen grew up in to the tune of “Here Comes the Sun” by the Beatles brought their fairytale full circle. Draped in winter white with seeded eucalyptus to fit Kristen and Alex’s simple and elegant winter wonderland aesthetic, the Fair Barn served as the couple’s celebration paradise. White flowers and white candles illuminated the venue’s natural beauty as Alex and Kristen’s closest friends and family spent the evening laughing, dancing and raising their glasses to the newlyweds and to coming home.

MELISSA PIERCE + JOSHUA BRONSON The events of 2020 put Melissa and Joshua’s grand wedding on hold, but no pandemic could postpone the love they have for one another. The cancellation proved to be a blessing in disguise, as a spontaneous barn ceremony was a simple and perfect way to put the focus on their love for each other. Under the watchful eye of their horses, Melissa and Joshua made their promises to each other in front of their closest friends and family. Although the evening wasn’t what they originally had in mind, their low-key barn wedding served as the opening act for the main event in November 2021, and ultimately showed that no matter the hardship, love really does always win.

JUDY + ERIC DUGGAN What do you do when a crowded cruise ship deck throws a hitch in an expertly planned New Year’s Eve proposal? If you’re Eric, you improvise, and move the moment to a private cabin. If you’re Judy, you relish watching your love pour out his heart on one knee — and then you convince him to do it again, in front of cameras that captured the act for all to see. Though each had their share of military travels, picking a location in Pinehurst was a no-brainer for this active-duty bride and this golf-loving, cybersecurity analyst groom. Nine months spent perfecting logistics with the help of a wedding planner culminated in a day that flowed as easily as the coffee on their first date, and meant as much to the bride and groom as each picture-perfect proposal.

KAILEE CRAIG + NIRMAL CHORADIA With days full of karaoke, games, golf, and bourbon tastings, this marketer-doctor duo ensured that their music-filled Hindi ceremony celebrated two families who had truly become united. After meeting at an ultimate Frisbee tournament, singing to the Zac Brown Band and getting engaged on a mountaintop, Kailee and Nirmal would spend the next nine months planning a ceremony that combined Indian tradition and bluegrass culture — one that centered on family and the importance of a future filled with music and laughter. From the traditional Mehndi ceremony to a rehearsal-turnedSangreet featuring Indian line dances and fusion dishes by Chef Prem Nath to a soundtrack provided by a dhol player, violinist and DJ, each event of the multi-day nuptial were filled with vendors and decor that, like Kailee and Nirmal’s families, blended beautifully.

FREDDIE WORONOFF + JACK MCALHANY When the coronavirus prompted Jack and Freddie to slash their guest list by nearly 300, the idea of the celebration they both had in mind shifted — along with the date. Rather than saying “I do” in May in front of a crowd of hundreds, the couple shared an intimate September ceremony on the back patio of the Country Club of North Carolina’s Clubhouse. Light-up tambourines the couple purchased as party favors flashed across the dance floor in the hands of guests, who moved to the eight-piece Adrian Duke Band under a clear-top tent. With invitations narrowed down to family and the bridal party, the couple had time to connect with each guest on the dance floor; and to renew their perspective on what was important. As Freddie said, though shaking tambourines are music to her ears, they “don’t mean as much without family and friends there to help you celebrate.”

JORDAN WOOD + GABRIEL VENEGAS Over two years of near-daily trips to visit her horse’s stable in Southern Pines, Jordan fell in love with an abandoned estate on East Connecticut Avenue. Some time later, that estate would become Duncraig Manor & Gardens — and she, its first bride. With the help of owners Don and Caroline Naysmith, the venue’s first big event was a wedding weekend that looked just as beautiful in person as it did on the livestream to Gabriel’s extended family in Chile. The manor’s ample square footage provided more than enough space for a ceremony in the garden terrace, a reception on the front patio, and rooms for out-of-town guests. And while the coronavirus led Jordan to shrink the guest count, it also freed up her favorite artist, Brendan James, to play during the ceremony, first dance, and part of the reception. The music continued well into the night, as Jordan and her father — a former music producer — performed a father-daughter rendition of Frank Sinatra’s “You Make Me Feel So Young.”

If you want your day to run as smoothly as possible, yes. “With DIY weddings, people come in and don’t understand the rules of their venue, the fluctuations of the flower market, or the logistics of making everything work together,” Leslie says. “They have a grand plan, and then there is panic, even with small backyard weddings. A professional florist is comfortable in every setting and knows how to make it look its best.”
When Should I Book a Florist?

lanning how guests will get from the ceremony to the reception — and the after-party — might not be at the top of your to-do list. But smooth transitions between each part of your big day can play one of the most important roles in its overall success.
How Should I Prepare for Transportation?
Start early. In our market, peak wedding season is from March-October, so plan accordingly. Preparing a sample timeline of the events will help you determine who may need transportation; when you send your invitation or launch a wedding website, ask guests to confirm if they’ll need a ride. Not all transportation companies are the same; some may provide logistical support, while others may require a timeline, map, directions and more.
Who Should You Provide Transportation For?
Most obviously, the bride and groom, and the wedding party. Consider providing transportation for additional guests if: • Drive time between hotels, ceremony and reception clocks in at more than 20 minutes 48
• You’re in a small market or destination wedding setting where ride-share options are not abundant or reliable • If your venue is hard to find, or requires following specific or detailed directions • If parking spaces are limited, or difficult to access
What Transportation Should I Choose?

Here are some things to consider for each type of vehicle: • Antique Cars: Older cars may not have A/C or heat, and make sure the car can accommodate your princess ballgown (or other style choices). • Horse-Drawn Carriage: Horses normally don’t travel at night, and you won’t want to travel on busy streets. The Ceremony Traditionally, the bride rides with her father or her bridesmaids to the ceremony. To stay on budget, try using the same car reserved for the getaway. The same tactic can be employed with bridesmaids and groomsmen, with some logistical planning. The Getaway After the ceremony is a perfect opportunity for the new couple to take a few minutes for themselves, ride around the block, and have a photo op with a special vehicle. Use this time for your “grand exit” so all of your guests can be present for great daytime photos. The Reception Departure needs to begin as soon as the first guest needs to leave, whether that’s parents with young children or your
great-grandmother. Have shuttle service available for guests an hour after dinner. The After Party Don’t limit your event by limiting the hours that transportation is available. Just tell Debby and her husband, Bruce, co-owner of Carolina Dance Works, your top song choice and they’ll coordinate the moves to match.
A Personalized Approach
At Carolina Dance Works, routines are personalized down to the dress — brides who plan to wear a ballgown can be equipped with a special skirt while practicing at the studio. If your gown has a deep plunge or a high split, Debby makes sure your moves won’t threaten a wardrobe malfunction. Learning also continues after the lessons end. One-onone instruction sessions are recorded and sent home with students, so they can practice between in-studio sessions PS Bride & Groom

How to Start

Consider the Perks of Small-Town Charm
T
here are an overwhelming number of decisions to be made surrounding a wedding ceremony and reception; one of the most important is the venue. There are many details that can go into the choice of a location, and the discussions sometimes can involve whether to have an event in a larger city or in a small town. Larger cities have perks, but small towns have charming venues that can provide many benefits to you and your guests without the big city costs. The Cole Auditorium in Hamlet, found in neighboring Richmond County, is the perfect venue if you are looking to have your wedding away from the hustle and bustle of a big city locale. The Cole Auditorium is a beautiful brick venue that accommodates up to 260 people for sit-down dinners or up to 700 people for stand-up receptions, plus the auditorium that seats over 900 people for shows and events. It has a bright, spacious lobby for additional seating or entertaining, and outdoor space as well. You’ll find large, private dressing 60
rooms equipped with makeup mirrors, counter space, sinks, a separate changing area, restrooms and shower facilities. There’s no upcharges for guests, and the Cole has tables and chairs that do not require an extra rental fee. When you choose a vendor like the Cole Auditorium in a smaller nearby town, you can often find better availability with other wedding vendors, like caterers and florists. This is especially important if you are planning less than a year in advance. These vendors offer more personalized services and recommendations, and they will work to earn your business. Vendor references are easy to retrieve and can be trusted for local services. Small town vendors also typically work together for receptions and weddings. Often, they are willing to be paired together for one “turn-key” package price, which generally is a fraction of the cost for these services elsewhere. If you have guests traveling in from out of town, there are reasonably priced options for hotels and overnight accommodations within a few miles of the PS Bride & Groom
