Wedding Day Flower Power
The past two years turned the wedding world upside down, but the future is bright, especially for florists. Southern Pines florist Hollyfield Design says now more than ever, soon-to-be newlyweds want a ‘wow’ factor and are open to more colorful and creative floral arrangements on their big day.
If you spent the pandemic scouring the internet and social media for wedding ideas, you’re probably up to date on the latest trends. If you haven’t, then Hollyfield Design has the scoop.
Color
Pre-pandemic, we lived in an age of elegant neutrals and classic pastels, but post-pandemic brides want something a little more fun. They’re adventuring into saturated colors and dramatic arrangements. If you
10 Bride & Groom by PineStraw
want color, choose one or two primary hues, then add a supporting cast of secondary shades to bring your arrangements to life. While color is gaining traction, don’t be afraid to buck the trend and go for all-white bouquets — classic never goes out of style.
Texture
Traditional weddings often pair hydrangeas with roses for a nice texture mix. But Hollyfield says more and more texture options are making their way into weddings, from dried and preserved elements to grasses and wild greenery that break up a bold palette. Embracing nature can also set your floral arrangements apart. Incorporate flowers of all shapes and sizes into your big day to mirror natural growth and bring an artistic vibe. Many couples will opt for locally sourced seasonal flowers and greenery to blend their wedding visions seamlessly into its location.
Now, onto bouquets: We love creating big, loose bouquets at Hollyfield Design. In the South, loose garden styles with a “just picked” feel will always have a home, but don’t shy away from a slim, scaled-back handheld, which can be so chic and current, as well as proportioned well for the petite bride.
Scale
Some couples have literally gone big after waiting years to have their weddings. Expect grand arrangements and dramatic designs in 2023. While wedding party bouquets and boutonnieres might stay understated, ceremonial arrangements and reception flowers will be the opposite. Sweeping aisle displays and big custom floral arches will center the bride and groom and create that perfect backdrop for photography.
Flowers are one of the best ways to make a statement at your wedding. Whether you already have a specific vision for the big day or want creative assistance, reach out to Hollyfield Design for all your floral needs, from bridal bouquets to ceremonial backdrops and beautifully crafted centerpieces. Our talented designers create bouquets and floral arrangements with each client’s style and budget in mind.

RIGHT PHOTOGRAPH
MOLLIE TOBIAS PHOTOGRAPHY
Leave the Details to the Proven Experts
At Duncraig Manor & Gardens, we know that the care and hospitality shown to guests while providing the bride with her dream wedding are key to an enjoyable and memorable wedding and reception. This involves planning a series of activities and situations that provide interest, fulfill expectations, offer social interaction, and deliver enjoyment while avoiding periods with nothing planned. An outstanding event is a result of implementing a well-designed plan with excellence.
In our meetings with wedding couples, we develop such an event plan. Having produced over 7,000 weddings and receptions in our historic venues throughout the country, we will relate our own stories that were teaching moments.
Filling “down time” when the photographer takes pictures is particularly important. Use music, hors d’oeuvres and an invitation to enjoy the surrounding gardens, all while keeping guests informed about what is happening next. Once a group of older guests left the facility because
nothing was happening, and they thought wrongly that the event was over! And there was the group that left because the photographer took over an hour to capture all the “great spots.”
Making sure that vendors and service partners are on board with the planned time schedule keeps things running smoothly. For instance, we have agreements with photographers specifying when and how long photography will take. And once a DJ, after setting up his equipment, thought he had time to go shopping and left the venue when he was to provide music for the ceremony and cocktail hour.
Organizing and monitoring spaces that service partners use to avoid hazards and provide adequate walking spaces for guests will minimize potential accidents. Setting up speaker stands or tripods in walkways, resulting in Aunt Mable breaking her hip, can ruin a reception!
Realizing that not everyone enjoys the same decibel level, we keep the DJ’s music amplification at a safe level. You want to avoid the situation
12 Bride & Groom by PineStraw

where the bride’s grandfather, who has tinnitus and cannot tolerate overly loud music, must leave his granddaughter’s party.
Encouraging brides to assign seating at the reception makes dinner conversation more enjoyable and guests more comfortable. You do not want to be in the situation where all but nine people who want to sit together are not able to. The bride now has nine upset guests, and one is her father’s boss!
Assisting the photographer and bride with the cake cutting photograph ensures a smooth transition into dessert time. Where is the cake knife? Did the bride not provide one? To SMASH or not to SMASH ? No one knows! Provide napkins!
Keep the party to a reasonable timeframe that does not extend past the ability of guests to enjoy it. Our experience says, “Limit the party to 3 hours or so.” Do not end up with the wedding couple ready for the big “send-off” and there are only five guests left and they are waiting for an Uber.
At Duncraig Manor & Gardens our experienced wedding planners and coordinators collaborate with the wedding couple to create an event plan that fulfills their desires, demonstrates hospitality and care of their guests, and ensures that their wedding celebration is joyful and unforgettable.
We welcome you to schedule an appointment to tour Duncraig Manor & Gardens and receive a personalized proposal for your special day. See how your wedding dreams can become a beautiful reality.

William 12.31.2021
Kaitlin
kaitlin baird + william helms III
William popped the question over a morning cup of coffee on a low-key, rainy Saturday complete with cuddling on the couch. Close friends and family stopped by in the afternoon to top off the surprise.
“The perfect proposal,” Kaitlin said. “William knew his future wife well.”
The pair’s wedding was originally scheduled for New Year’s Eve 2020, but, thanks to the coronavirus pandemic, William and Kaitlin waited 860 days to tie the knot — but who’s counting?
When the big day finally arrived, the couple wed at Pinehurst’s historic Village Chapel and then celebrated their new marriage and the New Year in a reception at The Fair Barn. Complete with sparklers and a Champagne toast at midnight, the wedding had an elegant and timeless vibe that the newlyweds said they’ll always look back on and love.

Jacy
jacy barnes + charlie clapp
One wedding led to another. Jacy met her future husband, Charlie, at her sister’s big day. She was the maid of honor, and Charlie was a groomsman at the Nashville bash. But the future Clapps chose the Sandhills for their wedding destination. Though neither of them grew up in Pinehurst, Charlie is an avid golfer, and Jacy fell in love with the historic town’s charm over the course of a few work trips.
The couple went for a classic vibe, modeling their big day after royal weddings. Jacy and Charlie held their ceremony at The Village Chapel and then celebrated with a reception at the Pinehurst Country Club’s Outlook Ballroom, overlooking the No. 2 golf course.
As a nod to Jacy’s father, a North Carolina sweet potato farmer, the couple included the sweet side as a dinner option and in the form of locally-made sweet potato chips in the gift bags.

Decoding the Dress Code
Decoding wedding dress codes can be a doozy. You examine the invitation, scour the internet for answers, and then look back at the invitation, hoping to find clues in the cursive script. But your questions only multiply: Does a dark suit qualify as formal attire, or is a tuxedo necessary? What exactly is a “dressy” dress anyway?
To make dress codes even more confusing, couples sometimes prefer hybrid standards, like cocktail casual. Other times, soon-to-be newlyweds don’t even list a dress code on the invitation.
At The Fair Barn — one of the most popular wedding venues in the Sandhills — weddings with all dress codes are welcome (which doesn’t make it easy on the guests). Whether you’re booking a southern hoedown or a black tie affair, keep The Fair Barn, 200 Beulah Hill Road South, Pinehurst, at the top of your list. For booking inquiries, call (919) 295-0166 or go to vopnc.org.
The Fair Barn’s Ultimate Guide to Wedding Dress Codes
Skim our guide, so you always show up to weddings in the proper attire. (One thing is for sure, you don’t want to show up to a wedding at The Fair Barn, thinking your boots and jeans will do, only to be met with a sea of tuxedos.)
Wedding dress codes, from most formal to least:
• For white tie, imagine you’re attending a wedding at the governor’s mansion. Men should don formal black tuxedos with tails and matching pants, white shirts and waistcoats, and, as the name suggests, white bowties. Women, wear a full-length gown in elegant fabric with your best jewels and long white gloves.
22 Bride & Groom by PineStraw
• One step down from white tie is black tie. Here, men should stick with tuxedos and trade white bowties for black ones. Women should stick with formal floor-length gowns but leave the gloves at home.
• Men don’t have to wear tuxedos for black tie optional or formal attire, but they can. If you leave the tux hanging in your closet, wear a traditional, dark suit with a conservative tie. Women can go for shorter dresses and show some ankle.
• Cocktail attire mixes elegance and comfort. Men should wear a dress shirt with slacks and a sports jacket; no tie is required. Women can show some leg with a short dress or an elegant pantsuit. (If you see festive on an invitation, go for cocktail attire in brighter colors with playful accessories.)
• For a semi-formal wedding, the time of day is key. Choose lighter colors for daytime events and darker shades for the evening. Men, you can ditch the tie but keep the slacks, sport coat, and a dress shirt. Women, keep a little length on your dress or opt for a dressy skirt and top.
• A casual dress code doesn’t necessarily mean boots and jeans. Here, women should go for something like a sundress and wedges. For men, a polo and khakis should do.
• Come as you are means just that. Break out those boots and jeans or whatever you’re most comfortable in.

A Perfect Smile for a Perfect Day
On the big day, all eyes, cameras, and cell phones will be focused on the bride and groom, so make sure those smiles are pearly white. Give your teeth a pre-wedding touchup — or makeover — at Pinehurst Dentistry with smile extraordinaire Jordan Ridge, D.D.S.
A graduate of UNC’s Adams School of Dentistry, Jordan has worked alongside her father, Fred Ridge, D.D.S., for more than 15 years, helping patients to build confidence with healthy gums and teeth.
In preparation for the wedding day, Jordan provides professional whitening services, as well as corrective aids, like Invisalign and veneers, to make sure your photos exceed “picture perfect.” Working with Jordan and the Pinehurst Dentistry team will give you the confidence boost to keep you grinning from the “first look” through the sparkler sendoff, without a moment’s insecurity.
Before the Altar
You whittled down the guest list and picked wedding colors and bowties, but neither you nor your fiancée is happy with your smiles. Whether your “I dos” are weeks or months to a year away, Jordan offers pre-wedding dental solutions to accommodate each timeline.
For brides and grooms needing a quick fix, Jordan can revamp your smile with veneers in just a day. For couples with more time before the ceremony, she and her team can straighten your smile with Invisalign.
To make your teeth as white as the wedding dress, Jordan offers plenty of whitening options, including at-home systems, like Philips Zoom and Kör Deep Bleaching, so you can brighten your smile while finalizing the menu and reorganizing the seating chart.

No matter the timeline, Jordan Ridge and Pinehurst Dentistry offer unparalleled support, from the initial consultation through follow-up appointments.
On the Big Day

Colleen, a pastry chef originally from Saudi Arabia, and Travis, a government consultant from Scottsdale, Arizona, somehow managed to meet in Asheville, North Carolina, in 2015. After getting engaged on a beach in Maui, Hawaii, the couple decided to tie the knot in Pinehurst, where they vacation every year.
The couple’s outdoor ceremony behind the clubhouse of Pinehurst No. 9 paired perfectly with a sunny April wedding day. Instead of choosing traditional bridesmaids and groomsmen, the pair opted for a wedding party of 12 kids, all near and dear to their hearts, including their son and daughter.
Colleen and Travis were surrounded by friends and family, so the entire weekend felt like “coming home,” Colleen said. “It was low-key with the people we love most.”

Christine and Cohen fell in love and got engaged after meeting in college at East Carolina University. In a clever move, Cohen snuck the engagement ring into Christine’s Christmas stocking to pop the question with his future in-laws present.
When Christine discovered that Southern Pines’ historic Duncraig Manor was an all-inclusive venue — from food and cake to flowers and seating — she was sold. The bride wanted to incorporate her favorite color, pink, into the wedding without the color taking center stage. When she found a rose and Champagne color scheme, she knew that was it.
A jack-of-all-trades groomsman Joseph “Joe Joe” Hughes kicked off the wedding day as the officiant and ended the night as the couple’s DJ.
Looking back on her whirlwind wedding day, Christine said she wishes she would’ve taken the time “to sit, eat, and soak it all in.”

Love the Skin You’re In
“Your skin is 90% of your selfie” is a slightly cheesy quote bouncing around the cosmetics world this year. But, according to Brianna Vincent PA-C, owner of Bloom Precision Aesthetics, the quote rings true.
Vincent opened Bloom Precision Aesthetics with one goal: to help each patient highlight the features they love about themselves and help them feel better in the process.
On your wedding day — when the pictures you take will decorate your walls for years to come — it’s even more important than usual to love the skin you’re in. Dipping your toe into advanced skin care can be intimidating, but at Bloom, Vincent and her personable staff of providers make the intimidating process a breeze.
“We’re experts at enhancing your already beautiful self, not changing or augmenting,” Vincent says. “We know that even the smallest tweaks can hugely boost your confidence and help you feel like ‘you’ when you look in the mirror.”
Where To Start
The Bloom process begins with an individual consultation where the team and new patient discuss skin goals and timeline. Sometimes, the resulting plan will fine-tune the patient’s already established skincare routine. But other times, Vincent recommends more intensive plans, such as facial injections to treat wrinkles and stubborn lines or laser treatments to improve overall skin tone and texture. You can be sure that Bloom’s process will be simple and manageable whichever route you choose, no matter your skincare expertise.
Whether you are ready for a full treatment plan or simply product recommendations, the sooner you schedule your consultation at Bloom the better. Vincent advises brides-to-be to schedule their consultation at least six months before the “I dos” so the glowing skin of their dreams will be fully displayed on the wedding day. That ensures there will be time for initial treatments and any follow ups, as well as skincare plans to really produce results.
“On the day of my wedding I felt more beautiful than I have felt in my entire life. This was largely in part due to Bloom and Bri’s preventative treatments leading up to the wedding that kept my skin young and rejuvenated. I felt natural, confident and glowing in my own skin on my big day.”- Laura Martin

Veronica
veronica costantini + frank aloise
Veronica and Frank’s love story starts in a kitchen. The two chefs met while working at Villaggio Ristorante, a local Pinehurst favorite. Then on Christmas Eve in 2021, the pair got engaged during dessert after a traditional Italian dinner surrounded by Veronica’s family. The newly engaged couple’s first call was to Frank’s mother, Catherine.
Veronica and Frank were excited to display a wedding message on the marquee sign outside of the Sunrise Theater in downtown Southern Pines, but the pair took it a step further and decided to tie the knot on the theater’s stage. Veronica’s aunts — just two of the more than 70 guests who traveled from out of state for the wedding — decorated the space.
For the two chefs, music was the highlight of the day. The Carolina Philharmonic Junior Orchestra welcomed guests to the reception at Trackside, just across the street from the Sunrise Theater.
“The young ensemble did an outstanding job and lent an air of romance and small-town sweetness to set the mood,” Veronica said.

Hannah
hannah whited + roy dixon
Hannah and Roy met in Chapel Hill while attending the University of North Carolina. Roy proposed to Hannah while walking by the capitol building in Raleigh, the place they’d walked on their first date five years earlier.
Roy grew up — and still loves — playing golf in Pinehurst, so when the couple had to pick a venue, the Country Club of North Carolina was first on their list. On the big day, instead of asking friends and family to sign a standard guest book, the Dixons asked their guests to leave them voicemails on a vintage rotary phone.
Looking back, Hannah wished she wouldn’t have worried so much on the big day. “It was the perfect day put together by an amazing team, and we are so grateful for all their hard work,” she said.

Find Your Dream Venue Right Around the Corner
Apremier facility with lush gardens and niche amenities, all with a modern, industrial Charleston flair. Welcome to Village Pine Venue.
This project is a dream in the making by Sammy and Melissa McPeake and their three young daughters. The McPeakes are a local family with an investment in and passion for the success and growth of Moore County.
In 2021, Melissa left the family hotel and commercial rental business after almost 17 years so she and her husband could set off on a new and exciting adventure: an investment property of their own. They quickly found the property at 1628 McCaskill Road in Carthage, a perfectly positioned location with a pond, a home, a garage and unlimited potential. Most importantly, however, the McPeakes had a vision of what the future would be for the property.
Village Pine Venue is being constructed with the ability to offer many
different event opportunities, from small social gatherings to large birthday celebrations, from business meetings to large corporate events and conferences, from bridal showers to wedding ceremonies and receptions.
Envision an arched entry to a private and serene space, complete with brick paths and raised flower beds that will create a paradise for the property’s cultured bees and butterflies. A large patio under an established dogwood tree will be perfect for cocktail parties, private dinners, tea parties or smaller wedding ceremonies. This area will also be a photographer’s ideal place for family pictures and bridal portraits.
The home on the property has been renovated into the bridal house, also serving as the current office. This space provides a place for the bride and her bridal party to get ready. The house features two hair and makeup

rooms, a changing room, a comfortable lounge and a serving space for a delectable spread. In addition, the groom’s garage allows for the gentlemen to have their own space with a masculine feel.
Overlooking the pond and the rows of native longleaf pines will be the more than 7,000-square-foot banquet hall, complete with four large garage style doors that will open to a sprawling 2,500-square-foot patio. A catering prep kitchen for one of our fabulous preferred food vendors, a green room where your band can relax between performances, a separate room for kids, a conference room for professional meetings and both an indoor and outdoor balcony are also featured in the hall.
The property is centrally located in Moore County and only four miles from the traffic circle. Construction began in October; a virtual tour on
their website, www.villagepinevenue.com, clearly recreates the vision of what will exist on the property.
This venue space will have offerings and amenities like none other in the area. Milestone birthdays, lavish weddings, annual corporate events, Christmas parties, social gatherings, private dinners, conferences, meetings, bridal/baby showers, fundraisers, military balls…Village Pine Venue would love to host all of these future events and more.
Now reserving. To arrange a visit in order to explore the property, please call (910) 639-1730.

Capturing Memories
Months, sometimes even years go into planning a wedding, yet, on the big day, you might be so busy with guests that you barely enjoy the food, flowers, and finer things you so painstakingly selected. While mingling with old friends or distant cousins, you might miss your grandparents dancing to their favorite song or the ringbearer hugging the family dog.
But that’s why videographers like Terry McMillian of Brick Capital Video do what they do. Videographers capture the fleeting moments, so you can relive your wedding day without missing a single detail.
“I love what I do,” McMillian says.
A trained eye captures the small moments best, and McMillian has been behind the camera for decades. The Sanford native and Marine veteran took up professional videography in 1985 after earning undergraduate and graduate degrees in technology and related fields. Since, McMillian has filmed holiday parties, business conferences, and even funerals, but weddings make up 95 percent of his bookings.
“While you cherish the memories, we’ll preserve the legacy,” McMillian tells couples. He relies on his expertise to deliver a polished product and works closely

with wedding planners to capture the big day, but special requests from the bride and groom are always welcome. McMillian has videoed pre-wedding interviews with the bride, groom, and both sets of parents — and the results were replay-worthy.
Aside from the ceremony and reception, McMillian captures small moments like table setting and flower arranging. Then, for his signature shot, he turns his focus to the bride. “This is the bride’s day,” McMillian says. “I like to surround the bottom of her dress with flowers.”
Experience has taught McMillian to use only the highest quality, professional cameras and equipment. The finished wedding video, usually about an hour, flows smoothly from the ceremony through the reception. It’s no wonder that “capturing memories” is McMillian’s slogan.

allison hand + jordan kral
Both collegiate athletes, Jordan, a golfer, and Allison, a softball player, met through a teammate at a college bar. After dating briefly in school, the couple reconnected a few years later when Jordan reached out.
“We talked on the phone for hours that night and pretty much never stopped,” Allison remembered.
A beach proposal secretly photographed by Allison’s cousin and a brunch celebration with friends and family made a sweet start to a Sunday. After moving all over the United States and even back to Jordan’s hometown of Windsor, Ontario, the couple settled in Pinehurst so the groom could continue to work in golf.
They held their wedding ceremony on the grass overlooking a golf course at the Forest Creek Golf Club and then moved on to food in the dining room and dancing outside on the patio. With flowers from Thistle & Moon, Allison said her modern, boho wedding came to life.

Atennis match, an empty ring box, and a little help from Poppy — the couple’s Boston terrier who ran onto the courts with the “missing” ring attached to her collar — made for the engagement of Kailey’s dreams. And that was only the first act of the night Eric had planned. When the couple arrived at Eric’s parents’ house, their closest friends and family were waiting to celebrate over good food.
Living on the 18th hole of Pine Needles Golf Club, the Pinehurst natives had a special connection to their wedding venue. An outdoor reception was planned, but Mother Nature intervened. Unexpected rain forced the party inside to the club’s dining room, but the queso fountain and taco bar kept the bride and groom and all their guests cheesing the night away.

A Show-Stealing Smile
Of all your wedding keepsakes, photos take the spotlight. They hang on your walls, fill albums, and pop up on cell phone screens and social media — so make sure you love your smile in every photo. Smiles in the Pines is a state-of-the-art dental practice that ensures just that.
Originally from Boston, Army wife and veteran Dr. Lejla Streets opened Smiles in the Pines to provide patients with warm and personalized service without the red tape of a larger office. “I really do take time with my patients,” Streets says. With only a handful of staff members in the office at any time, Smiles in the Pines is a quiet practice where Streets gives each patient her full attention.
Before, During, and After the Big Day
Streets works with brides and grooms throughout their wedding-planning process. Mulling over big-day details can lead to TMJ dysfunction, or pain in the face and jaw. Streets can treat TMJ related pain in the office and teach patients how to treat the pain at home. Streets’ specialized treatments for orofacial pain elevates her beyond your average dentist.
Once the big day arrives, Smiles in the Pines can supply quick and easy solutions for last-minute touch-ups, like whitening pens and on-the-go bleaching trays, to ensure
60 Bride & Groom by PineStraw
your smile doesn’t make the list of wedding-day worries.
Streets applies a holistic approach to both general and cosmetic dentistry. Even after the ceremony, Smiles in the Pines offers plenty of services, including and beyond dentistry.
As a certified Diplomate of the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine, Streets is an expert at treating various sleep disordered breathing. She also specializes in myofunctional therapy, or the treatment of the muscles around the face and mouth.
Sticking To Your Wedding Budget
Smiles in the Pines promotes affordable dental care options, like in-office financing, and accepts various insurances.
For patients without insurance coverage, Smiles in the Pines offers an alternative. For $350 per year, patients can purchase a V.I.P. dental plan that covers services ranging from checkups to screenings and emergency visits. The program also earns patients 20% off dental treatments and 25% off teeth whitening.
Something New: Modern Dentistry for a Modern Wedding
Smiles in the Pines is no ordinary dental practice. State-of-the-art technology, including digital intraoral scanners, a 3-D modeling machine, and a diode laser for soft tissue surgeries, enables Streets to treat any issue a bride or groom may have before or after the “I dos.”
Your wedding photos are visual keepsakes — you should love your smile in each one. Dr. Lejla Streets and her team at Smiles in the Pines provide unbeatable service throughout all stages of the wedding, from planning to the big day and beyond.
Visit Smiles in the Pines at 7 Village Club Court, Pinehurst. The office is open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Mondays and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Thursdays. Learn more or request an appointment at smilesinthepinesdental.com.

Millicent Holden
millicent womble + holden poole
Millicent and Holden started dating while attending East Carolina University. “One of our first dates was a sorority social of mine,” Millicent said. Once Holden survived that (and chose to stick around), Millicent decided he was a keeper.
During a weekend getaway to Charlotte — a city the couple loves — Holden proposed to Millicent in Romare Bearden Park while his sister covertly snapped photos to document the engagement.
When selecting a venue, Millicent knew just where to go: She has many beloved childhood memories from The Carolina Hotel.
“We had so many wonderful memories there,” Millicent said, “from delicious dinners to enjoying Christmas decorations or sitting on the front porch of the resort and enjoying the Pinehurst view.”
Holden loves playing golf, so when his future bride suggested a Pinehurst wedding, he didn’t need to be convinced. The pair tied the knot at The Village Chapel and then celebrated at The Carolina Hotel, just a short walk away.

Kate Shane 09.24.2022
kate morris + shane medlin
Shane first saw his future bride, Kate, when he went to his sister’s dance recital in 2014. Shane attended Union Pines, while Kate attended Pinecrest, so he had to reach out on social media to break through the rivalry and date his high school sweetheart.
The couple stayed together through college and eventually bought a house in Pinehurst. That’s when Shane and Kate became members of The Village Chapel. When they had to choose a ceremony location, they didn’t think twice.
On the big day, Kate wore eponymous “Kate” heels from Christian Louboutin and the pearl earrings her mother wore at her own wedding. Together, the newlyweds cruised to their reception at Aberdeen’s Soirée on South in a family classic car, a lavender 1955 Dodge Le Femme.
When the couple’s Punta Cana honeymoon was canceled due to a hurricane, Shane and Kate audibled, choosing to start their marriage with a getaway to Williamsburg, Virginia, and a return trip to the site of the proposal, the Outer Banks.

“When Money Comes Together”
Planning and preparing for YOUR big day, is an excellent rehearsal for the rest of your marriage. It can be an exceptional exercise in communication, working as a team and creating something that represents both of you as a couple. Finances and budgeting drive this event as well as your individual opinions. Therefore, it’s individual and unique as the two of you. There is no right or wrong, only what you happily create together as a couple.
This same methodology can be applied to your financial marriage. Your individual opinion and comfort brought together will create your unique collaboration financially. Couples report that the number one stressor of a marriage is finances. But it doesn’t have to be. Open and honest communication, with a deliberate thought-out financial plan, for now and the future, is how you achieve financial confidence for life together. Let me repeat that, a deliberate thought-out financial plan.
A solid plan as you begin your life together is essential. A plan that is adaptable and suits your needs now and grows with you throughout life. Seeking the advice of a third party can help you
70 Bride & Groom by PineStraw
come together, in a safe and nonjudgmental space to bring your collected goals, comforts, etc. together to create your financial road map.
As a financial advisor, this is an area I focus on educating people about. I have made it a goal of mine to make myself available to couples, no matter their status, to find education and collaboration.
From an annual budget and home ownership to the cost of family planning and estate planning, there are many boxes to check and topics to cover. It doesn’t have to be stressful; it can actually be fun. Perhaps that’s the financial mind of mine talking, ha!
It is also important to gain an understanding of what each of your current financial situations looks like. Does it need to be organized? Consolidated? Is there debt that needs to be refinanced? So many questions that often times are uncomfortable to ask/discuss. But it is a necessity. The communication, clarity and collaboration is part of the unity of marriage.
Often times it takes time to lace together a newlywed couples financial map. That’s okay. Maybe you aren’t married yet but you already have combined your financial lives and are feeling stronger than ever as one. You still need a map, a plan, and answers to the “what if this happens? Or that.” It may even be that you have decided to not “marry” your finances at all.
Again, nothing is wrong, no answer is incorrect. However, you need a plan for the financial things that do come together and waiting for a situation to arise can equal stress. Plan ahead, work together, even if it’s not financially 100% together. You are a couple after all and a team of two!
We offer no fee consultations with all couples and everyone in our community. We want everyone to achieve financial confidence for life. The first, and often ongoing step, toward that is education. That’s where we start.
“I have seen so many financial partnerships over the years and there is no wrong recipe, only what is right for you as a couple. But that recipe has to be created together to work.” – Sheree Lancaster, Sr Financial Advisor

Selecting Your Wedding Wines
You’ve already mixed the perfect playlist, picked flowers and greenery for centerpieces, and tasted and retasted the menu. As your big-day planning winds down, you can almost hear the wedding bells ring. Now it’s time to select your wedding wines.
Here, the adage rings true — last but not least. Even though wine selection often closes out wedding planning, great wines carry dinner into dessert and hours of unforgettable dancing, so don’t sleep on your wine selection. Go with the pros.
Britney Baggett of Triangle Wine Company in Southern Pines offers a free wedding consultation, where you can sample wines that pair well with your menu and your budget. “Whether it’s a BBQ truck or catered by Elliott’s, having the food selections picked out before your wines is optimal,” Baggett says.
72 Bride & Groom by PineStraw
At your consultation, Britney will select up to 10 wines to sample, a mix of reds and whites. “We’ll select wines to sample where we can give really deep discounts that are also crowd-pleasers,” she says.
As a rule of thumb, Britney advises offering wines that appeal to the greatest number of people by keeping your flavors clean and simple.
Chardonnays can be buttery and oaky, while sauvignon blancs are acidic. If the bride and groom want to go with just one white, select a pinot grigio for a pleasing middle ground. The same rule applies to reds. If you go with one, choose a pinot noir or red blend for an affordable palate-pleaser.
And if you’re searching for organic, naturally grown and fermented wines, look no further than Triangle Wine. The shop has increased its organic selection for customers who don’t want their beverages served with sulfites.
Once you’ve made your wine selection, Britney will help you decide how much to order. She recommends planning for roughly two to three glasses per guest — but you know your friends and family best. Here’s a tip for weddings on a budget: Downsize the standard pour from six ounces to five. This way, you can squeeze an extra glass from each bottle.
Triangle Wine’s services don’t stop after sampling. The company offers delivery and bartending for the big day to ensure your beverages are served at the proper temperature, and pours are well-paced. “The last thing
you want is wine that is served too warm or to run out of wine at your wedding,” Britney says.
Oh, and don’t forget about the toast. Guests usually sip whatever bubbly is in their flute without a second thought, but Triangle Wine offers memorable sparkling wines that will have your friends wondering, Mmmmm… what is this?
Your wedding dress has already been altered, the tux is tailored, and the seating chart finally works. Take a deep breath — the tough stuff is over. All that’s left is selecting your wines, and Triangle Wine Company makes that part easy.
Your wedding day is a celebration, and your wine selection lubricates the party wheels, even during the planning process. It’s the cherry (wine) on top. “I like to tell people this is the easiest part of planning your wedding,” says Britney. We’ll toast to that.
Triangle Wine Company is located at 144 Brucewood Road, Southern Pines. The shop is open on Sunday from noon to 6 p.m., Monday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Call (910) 2462100 to schedule your free wedding consultation.

kellyann miller + christopher irwin
Kellyann and Chris had mutual friends, but they met the modern way — with a swipe right. The pair dated for over five years while living in New York City, where they would spend Fridays working together in their oasis in the big city, a little garden behind the High Line Hotel. After moving to Texas in 2020, Chris took Kellyann back to their NYC garden spot and got on down on one knee to propose.
Born and raised in the Sandhills, Kellyann couldn’t think of a better place to get married than the Weymouth Center. A classic palette of black, navy, and white completed the big day. Kellyann didn’t have bridesmaids, but she asked close friends and family to wear navy.
“The day was absolutely perfect — a dream come true,” Kellyann said. “We are so lucky to have had all of our family and friends in our sweet town of Southern Pines to celebrate.”

Catering to You and Yours
Wedding guests often remember the food more than anything else, maybe even more than the bride’s dress. That’s why it’s critical to carefully consider your menu, the food service style, and how they both pair with your wedding venue.
Chef Brian Hainley and his wife, Alison, are here to help. Brian graduated from the Culinary Institute of America, and his food is wellknown in the Sandhills. The Hainleys own and operate local hotspot Mason’s Restaurant and Grocery in Aberdeen, as well as the neighboring Pizzeria Grazia.
With the wild success of their restaurants, the Hainleys decided to start Genuine Hospitality Catering and Events to accommodate the high demand for quality local caterers.
Whether your wedding will be small and intimate or include all the third
cousins, the Hainleys have you covered. Genuine Hospitality Catering can serve parties with as few as 25 guests, up to 250.
On the Menu
When creating your wedding menu, consider your personal taste — it is your big day, remember?
“One of the things we want to emphasize with brides is: Make yourself happy first,” Brian says. “Choose the foods you want to enjoy — that’s the most important thing.”
Genuine Hospitality Catering might serve up Nashville chicken sliders with shrimp and grits if you like traditional Southern food. If you prefer steakhouse eats, the Hainleys might suggest a carving station paired with a seafood bar brimming with lobsters, crab legs, and raw oysters.
82 Bride & Groom by PineStraw
Genuine Hospitality can make it all, so there really are no rules. If international flair tickles your taste buds, then opt for Asian fusion with tuna poke bowls or a Mexican spread complete with a street taco station.
When the bride and groom can’t agree, Genuine Hospitality can help start a marriage right — with a little compromise. If the bride wants Mediterranean cuisine, but the groom prefers grandma’s Southern cooking, then your menu might range from grape leaves and couscous salad to spicy Nashville-style fried chicken.
And look no further for drinks. Genuine Hospitality Catering provides a full-service bar and craft cocktails, as well as wine and beer.
Served With Style
Hiring a caterer familiar with all the local venues ensures that the wedding day runs smoothly. Lucky for you, Genuine Hospitality’s staff
has worked at every major venue in the region, so you have nothing to fret about on the big day.
“Depending on how elaborate you want to get with your catering and particularly with your service style, the venue is an important consideration,” Brian says.
Recent service trends include heavy hors d’oeuvres, grazing stations, and charcuterie spreads. Family-style dinners are also gaining popularity.
“We can accommodate any service style a bride prefers,” Brian says. “But family style is just something really cool that lends an intimacy to a meal that is so appropriate for a celebration like a wedding.”
Before You Go
From the first appetizer to the last drink, Genuine Hospitality Catering and Events knows how to serve a memorable meal — as long as you remember to plan. Brian recommends selecting your wedding venue and caterer a year in advance.
Come to your catering appointment armed with your budget and guest count if you can. The Hainleys are good at stretching a budget and suggesting affordable options. For more information, call (910) 447-2774 or visit genuinehospitalitycatering.com. Genuine Hospitality Catering is located at 102 West Main Street, Suite 202, Aberdeen.

Live Out Your Fairy Tale in the Heart of Southern Pines
Once upon a time, the fresh air, idyllic charm, and wondrous beauty of the longleaf pine captivated the hearts of Pennsylvania railroad tycoon James Boyd and his daughter, Helen, as the pair made their way through Southern Pines, North Carolina.
With a little persistence from Helen, James purchased 1,200 acres of the pine-covered land with the purpose of preserving its beauty. The Boyds called it “Weymouth,” after their favorite place in England, and preserved the land for people to enjoy for years to come.
When his grandson, author James, and his grandson’s bride, Katharine, built Boyd House on the estate in 1922, they opened their doors and grounds to welcome townsfolk and coveted literary prodigies alike. Their legacy continued when, in 1977, the Friends of Weymouth was formed to buy this magical place and, in 1979, transformed its use into the nonprofit cultural center it is today — Weymouth Center for the Arts & Humanities.
For over 40 years, this fairytale estate has captured the hearts of brides across the state and country in search of the perfect spot to begin their happily ever afters.
Who Brings the Fairy Tale to Life When You Say, “I Do”? We Do.
Whether you’re in search of a venue to house an intimate ceremony, or a picturesque spot to accommodate your larger-than-life guest list, Weymouth Center for the Arts & Humanities checks all of the boxes. Couples can choose to exchange vows within the hallowed walls of the Boyd House or opt for an alfresco soirée among the ponds, fountains, and blooms of the Weymouth Center gardens. A commercial kitchen, dressing rooms, covered terrace, great room, patios, and more provide a variety of modern conveniences, all of which are wrapped up in a spacious historic setting.

For those looking for options, Weymouth Center offers a variety of accommodations to fit any and every need. Secure the first floor of the Boyd House and enjoy amenities like access to The Great Room and the lawns. Once known as a hangout spot for authors like Thomas Wolfe, Paul Green, and many other literary family friends, the Great Room can fit up to 60 people seated or 110 people standing. The main lawn is level and large enough to accommodate a large tent, and the gardens of the Boyd House are yours for the day.
Write Your Next Chapter
Weymouth has served as a warm and welcoming gathering place for over 100 years. Its scenic grounds and rich history are unparalleled for couples looking for the perfect place to begin writing their love stories. Whether you have already embarked on the journey to “I do,” or you are still in the daydreaming stages of planning your happily ever after, learn more about what Weymouth Center for the Arts & Humanities offers by visiting weymouthcenter.org.
Interested in taking it all in for yourself? Located at 555 E. Connecticut Ave. in Southern Pines, the grounds are usually open daily, and you can make an appointment to see inside the Boyd House and tour the grounds with the Director of Membership and Rentals, Monday through Friday.

Heather Carl
heather wood + carl thomas
Both in the veterinary field, Heather and Carl met on a blind date set up by a colleague in 2016. The couple immediately bonded over their love of animals and, four years later, took the next step toward marriage. Heather’s favorite place in the world is the historic Biltmore Estate, so when Carl wanted to propose, he knew exactly where to go to secure a “yes.”
The venue was just as easy to choose. Heather grew up two blocks away from the Weymouth Center for the Arts & Humanities and would often walk there with her family, catching tadpoles in the pond as a little girl. On the big day, Heather and Carl’s guests dined in the Great Room of the historic Boyd House. The couple collected antique, colored glasses and goblets that complemented the vintage room and the wedding’s 1920s vibe.
“Our day suited us perfectly,” Heather said. “I would not change a thing! If you ask Carl though, he says that he wished he could have had more time to eat our delicious food and cupcakes.”
