THE HEDGE GARDEN IN MEMORIAM

James C. Deveney, Jr. (February 12, 1942–January 10, 2019) James C. Deveney, Jr., beloved Pingree School Athletic Director from 1971 until 1983, passed away January 10, following a courageous battle with cancer. Jim was a lifelong New Englander, educator, and golfer. A graduate of Governor Dummer Academy and Brown University, Jim joined Pingree in 1971, its first year as a coeducational school. Jim was instrumental to the growth of Pingree’s athletics programs, even laying out the school’s first soccer field with Bill Walsh, the Pingree family’s caretaker. During his tenure, Jim successfully built and expanded Pingree’s athletics teams and witnessed the number of male students grow from 19 to 90. Additionally, Jim played a key role in school governance as a longstanding member of the Head’s Leadership Council. In recognition of his contributions to Pingree athletics, Jim was inducted into Pingree’s Athletics Honor Society in 1999. The annual golf tournament is also named in his honor. Jim is survived by his wife Sharon and countless friends. In accordance with Jim’s wishes, he was laid to rest in a private service.

Charlie Pingree (August 19, 1930–March 23, 2019) Charles W. Pingree, a beloved member of the Pingree family, passed away peacefully at home on March 23. A lifelong New Englander, Charlie grew up in South Hamilton and spent the majority of his adult life in Marblehead and North Haven, Maine. Charlie was an integral part of Pingree School’s history, evolution, governance, and community. A loyal philanthropist, former trustee, and long-standing member of the Head’s Leadership Council, Charlie’s unwavering commitment to and support of the mission of Pingree was vital in the growth and health of the school. Charlie is survived by his three sons, Chris ’78, Jay, and Will; his brother and sister-in-law, John and Dianne Pingree; his loving grandchildren; and countless relatives and friends. Charlie was predeceased by his wife, Ann; his parents, Sumner and Mary Weld Pingree; and his brother, Sumner.

Looking Forward

PINGREE MAGAZINE EDITOR IN CHIEF Novelette Brown CONTRIBUTORS Jared Charney Lily Castraberti ’20 Steve Filosa David Goff Ashley Goliti-Chase Leah Hancock Cara Angelopulos Lawler ’01 Diana Mathey Mike Montenegro Jen Richardson Tom Underwood DESIGN Big Magnet Media PRINTING Hannaford & Dumas Pingree Magazine is published twice a year for alumni, parents, and friends. We welcome your letters, story ideas, and suggestions.

This issue of Pingree Magazine celebrates the Class of 2019 and their passage into the next chapter of adult life, reflecting both upon the joy of Senior Week and the indelible legacy this impressive group leaves for future classes at Pingree. Beginning with Grit 'N Wit in the fall, the Class of 2019 set a new bar for school spirit, leveraging both Highlander Nation and the House System. On the athletics fields, they won more championships and playerof-the-year awards than ever before in school history. They shared their talents everywhere, from the roof of the school to Rockport’s Shalin Liu Performance Center. Most important, as the largest graduating class in school history, this amazing group of skilled young adults supported one another through both good times and challenging times, nurturing their sense of humor, love for each other, and care for this place. For this, they will be most remembered, and I am ever grateful. Join me in looking back on many of the highlights from their final months as seniors. Tim Johnson Head of School

Springfest Recap Though the events were adjusted to accommodate the spring’s relentless rainfall, Springfest was again a day full of friendly competition among Pingree’s newly-minted Houses. Eighteen student teams participated in events such as dodgeball, Family Feud, rock-paper-scissors battle, and Temple of Doom. Congratulations to House Amethyst, the overall winner of the inaugural House Cup! Students chose to play laser tag off-campus as their reward for their hard work and enthusiasm throughout the year.

Giving Day Breaks Record Our fourth annual Giving Day broke records once again, securing over 650 gifts totaling approximately $110,000 in under 24 hours! The Class of 2018 had the highest rate of participation—kudos to our then-youngest alumni!

Community Garden Fundraiser The Pingree Community Garden Club (PCG) held their second annual Mother’s Day plant sale recently and raised over $1,100 for Hamilton’s Acord Food Pantry. The students grew 250 tomato, cucumber, and pepper seedlings in Pingree’s greenhouse, and then sold them to members of the school community. In addition to the plant sale, the PCG used the greenhouse throughout the winter to grow, harvest, and donate produce.

Inside

Athletics

After last year’s undefeated regular season and Eastern Independent League and tournament titles, Pingree’s Varsity Field Hockey team was one of 36 nationwide invited to play at the Max Field Hockey High School National Invitational at Villanova from September 20–22, 2019.

Though the team will be short seven seniors from the successful 2018–2019 season, coach Jen Richardson is optimistic about her returning players and a few newcomers working together to secure the NEPSAC Championship in 2019. Two of these returning players are Maddie Mullaney and Alana Richardson, both members of the class of 2021. Maddie and Alana are well-known in EIL and regional play and both have taken great strides in the Olympic development pipeline, the U.S. Futures Program, in the past two years. MADDIE MULLANEY A native of Boxford, Maddie Mullaney ʟ21 is listed in the top 50 field hockey players nationwide in the class of 2021. Maddie began her field hockey career as an outside attacking midfielder in fifth grade as part of a grassroots Masconomet program, then moved into club play the following year at Danvers Indoor Sports. After transferring to Seacoast United,

her play on the team helped qualify them for national club championship berths in 2016, 2017, and 2018. Maddie captained the U-14 team in 2017, leading them to a fourth-place finish nationally, the highest the team has ranked in its history. May 2019 saw the Regional Futures Tournament, at which Maddie was selected for the U-16 Regional team. The team competed over four days in June at the National Futures Tournament in Spooky Nook, Pennsylvania. Maddie was then selected for the Stars and Stripes All-Star Team at the completion of the tournament again for the fourth consecutive year. This summer, Maddie was selected to the USA Regional Futures Team, again for the fourth time. At the conclusion of the National Futures Tournament, she was selected to the Rise O-16 Junior National Camp which was held June 29 to July 3. In between club and Olympic pipeline playing experiences, Maddie attends College Connection programs, showcases, and dedicates her time traveling to

various colleges getting in as many clinics as she can, along with three or more camps each summer. All of this playing experience leads to exciting prospects for the 2019 Pingree field hockey season! ALANA RICHARDSON Like her teammate, Alana Richardson ʼ21 is a Boxford native who has been playing since fifth grade for Masconomet, Danvers Indoor Sports, and Seacoast United. Alana was named to the U-17 US Women’s National Field Hockey Team in February, an accomplishment that speaks to her tremendous work ethic throughout a long process. At the end of June 2018, players were selected for the U-17 Junior National Camp roster. Alana was picked with 58 other players to attend the camp in July in Pennsylvania then made the cut with 38 athletes selected for the Winter Junior National Camp. Alana traveled again to Spooky Nook from January 22–25 for the U-17 National Camp selection process, which resulted in her selection for the 2019 U-17 National Team. Her training covered four weekends in February, March, and April. Alana was named to the final travel roster for the international tournament held in Cologne, Germany from April 18–20, where the US fell to Germany in two games and tied

Belgium in their third. This summer, Alana also was selected to the USA Regional Futures Team for the fourth consecutive year. In June she played once again in the National Futures Championship U-19 Girls tournament. After the tournament, Alana was selected for the Elite Stars and Stripes team once again and received an invitation to the O-16 Rise Junior National Camp in July. At the conclusion of the Junior National camp, she was then selected for the second-round January tryout for the 2020 Rise program. Her Seacoast United, College Connection, collegiate camps, and Pingree playing experience is keeping her busy and sharp as she continues in the Olympic pipeline. Keep an eye on @pingreefh on Twitter and Instagram to follow along with these talented athletes as they gear up with their teammates for a fall season of EIL play! Note: The path to the U.S. Women’s National Team is long and in the midst of a restructuring to conform to international standards—last year, there were U-16 and U-17 teams, whereas this year shifted to U-16 and U-20 (O-16 Rise) teams. While both Maddie and Alana are juniors, the December 31 birthday cutoff means Alana plays in the older bracket.

Senior Tribute Dinner One of the most poignant events of Senior Week, the Senior Tribute Dinner highlights the depth of the connections built between teachers and students over the course of a Pingree education. The tributes prepared for seniors by faculty members of their choice, provided insight into the relationship, with each tribute marked by inside jokes, touching anecdotes about growth and obstacles overcome, light roasting, and best wishes for the future. The Senior Tribute Dinner is a fitting kick-off event for Senior Week.

“What we do, both hoped for and unintended, may well live on in ways that we cannot even imagine...We are thankful for the kindness and foresight of those who have planted for us and nurtured us. May we also plant—even though we may not enjoy the shade— but, in so doing, express our faith and optimism for the future.” Alan McCoy

Baccalaureate The 2019 Baccalaureate ceremony featured graduating seniors Colette Combs and Christopher Mellen and retiring faculty members Alan McCoy and Jock Burns as the event’s speakers. A small, quiet event held in the Hedge Garden the evening before Commencement, Baccalaureate allows the graduating senior class to come together with their parents to reflect on their time as Pingree students.

SO AS WE GO OUT INTO THE WORLD, LET US DIVE HEADFIRST INTO UNCERTAINTY, LET US ACT WITH CONFIDENCE AND LET US NEVER FEAR MAKING MISTAKES ONCE, TWICE, OR ANY NUMBER OF TIMES. Let us always remember to take time to enjoy the view, and let us take comfort in our low moments, knowing—in our heart of hearts—that we will always have each other, and that all roads lead to home.” Christopher Mellen ’19, left

“It will ultimately be the how, not the what, that matters most in your future — how you will communicate, listen, navigate, and relate in the metaphorical rain, and the generosity of spirit with which you nurture relationships with the people who surround you in this Hedge Garden today. The people who love you.” Dr. Timothy Johnson

Commencement Commencement was held on the morning of June 9, 2019, in the Hedge Garden. After a spring full of record-breaking rainfall, it was a beautiful, sunny day filled with the sounds of bagpipers, heartfelt musical interludes, and a ceremony that highlighted the resilient, engaged nature of the Class of 2019. Priya Donti ’11 returned to South Hamilton to give the keynote address, spurring graduates to work on finding how to best apply their individual skills and knowledge to what motivates them.

Senior TRIBUTES One of the most poignant traditions of a student’s Pingree experience is receiving their Senior Tribute. Each year, graduating seniors invite members of the faculty and staff to write tributes in their honor. These thoughtful pieces reflect the students’ most cherished personality traits, passions, and accomplishments over their time at Pingree. The tributes, which are excerpted in the following pages, are read before the community at the Senior Tribute Dinner and again as students cross the stage at Commencement. As evidenced by the kind and thoughtful words of their mentors, the Class of 2019 has left an indelible mark on Pingree School.

THE HEDGE GARDEN ALUMNI EVENTS

Alumni Networking Night On May 16, nearly 70 Pingree alumni gathered at White Bull Tavern in Boston (owned by Alissa Covelluzzi Baird ’99) for the school’s annual Alumni Networking Night, hosted by Pingree’s Alumni Leadership Board. Guests received complimentary professional headshots, enjoyed great conversation, and heard from featured speaker, Dr. Kevin Schwartz ’96, an attending pediatric emergency medicine physician at Massachusetts General Hospital and co-founder of the non-profit The Child is Innocent.

ALB Members Return to Advise Seniors On April 3, the Alumni Leadership Board hosted a career pathways panel for current seniors. Five alumni from a variety of industries returned to Pingree to answer students’ questions as they plan for their college careers. Topics of discussion included how to decide which major to study, how to explore career options within a field of interest, and the value of leveraging the Pingree network.

Pingree’s community fundraiser, Under the Lights, which was held on May 4 at the Shalin Liu Performance Center in Rockport, was an inspiring night of arts and entertainment. More than 250 guests attended to celebrate and enjoy the artistic work of the Pingree community, while also raising critical support for financial aid and access programs. The evening featured performances by current students and alumni, as well as a silent auction of visual art pieces from students, alumni, faculty, and members of the wider Pingree community. Thank you to all who participated—Under the Lights was truly a shining moment for Pingree students and alumni!

THE HEDGE GARDEN CLASS NOTES

Class Notes Susie Oliver Schneider ’65 shares, “I am still teaching at Tower, and have been delighted to have two Pingree interns in the past several years. Many of my former students have moved on to be students at Pingree, which delights my alum spirit. And I have been there long enough that some former students are now sending me their children… talk about how to feel instantly old! Summers are spent on the water, running sailing races. This past year culminated in being a part of the J-70 World Championship—91 fiercely competitive boats, both professional and amateur, all starting at the same time, usually in over 20 knots of breeze with over 10 foot waves. It was awesome— especially being right on the starting line! Would love to hear from other members of the class of ‘65 or ‘64!” Judy Adamson ’67 writes, “I am still recovering from breast cancer treatment, which, thankfully, was a success! I am semi-retired and down to one regular paying client, a few volunteer clients, and an occasional consulting gig. I’m thoroughly enjoying my 3-year-old granddaughter who is about to go to a fancy dual-language school in Manhattan. I continue with my arts and crafts and have become an avid weaver. This year, a hat I made, that my nephew wore, became part of the permanent collection at the Fuller Craft Museum in Brockton, MA.”

Dale Grant Dick ’67 shares, “First, I want to thank all of you who wrote a note to be included in this newsletter. It’s good to stay in touch and share life events, despite no senior room to gather in! As for me, I am fully retired from working outside of the house but it seems my son, Grady, was serious when he always told me having to chase him around kept me young because he has given us two grandchildren who continue to keep me on my feet. In June, Jameson, age 6, graduates from kindergarten and Abiageal (called Abby, because no one can spell her name!) turns 6 months old. My dog, Gracie, a 5-year-old Lab has recently been certified as a therapy dog. We visit patients at Beverly Hospital and retired nuns at the Sisters of Notre Dame Retreat in Ipswich. Still riding down Highland Avenue (no convertible or cigarette now) passing Pingree on my way home, which brings back many fond memories.” Karen Durkee Heywood ’67 writes, “Our first family wedding took us to Carmel, CA for the marriage of our son, Andy Heywood ’98, to the fantastic Raha Raassi. Yes, Dale and Ed Dick were there! Andy and Raha live in Cornelius, NC, and Dana Heywood ’02, our ‘winter hater,ʼ now lives there as well. Seems all our travels these days are down South from all over NC, to Charleston, Savannah, and New Orleans. Could they be trying to tell us something?”

Posie Means Mansfield ’67 shares, “I have been busy with all my adaptive sports, spending a week last December at Breckenridge Ski Area in Colorado with Disabled Sports USA using outriggers to ski on my one leg. Great ski conditions and determination got me to the intermediate trails by mid-week. With Spaulding Adaptive Sports, I play tennis, go cycling, and kayaking, just to name a few. I will be surfing in June at Narragansett Beach in RI with an organization called AmpSurf, and in July, I will be water skiing at Squam Lake with Eastern Adaptive Sports. Sports have always been part of my life. Despite losing my leg above the knee 8 years ago, many doors have opened up for me and I have been given a chance to see myself and others differently. With the support group for amputees that I founded, I have spent a lot of time with many courageous people like the Boston Marathon bombing survivors. I appreciate life so much more now and I am living my life to the fullest. Recently, I went to Washington, DC with the Amputee Coalition to lobby for fair coverage for amputees like a nationwide law requiring insurance companies to cover the cost of prosthetics. I believe it will happen! I owe so much to Pingree, which instilled in me the desire to never give up despite the circumstances and to all of my classmates and friends.” Amanda Carey Hogan ’71 writes, “I am still a part of Windrush Farm

Therapeutic Equitation in North Andover, MA as the consulting educator. Delightfully, I am training instructors, staff, clients, and horses and loving being a part of the Windrush team affecting the lives of our clients of all abilities.”

Jud Smith ’75 won his second Rolex Yachtsman of the Year Award. Duncan Cox ’86 writes, “Pingree was such a great school for me, as I continue to be reminded. Got me started in geology and exercise and self-improvement; also set me up for wanting to know everything (an ambition I have recently given up on, but which served me well for a long time). Among my influences, Buddy Taft taught me about 20thcentury USA and must be credited with assigning some great reading, some of which I recently re-read with a whole new appreciation. I live in Salem now with my wife and daughter and have resolved to attend the next reunion. There are people I wonder about, some of whom I wish I had been nicer to. Maybe I will find out about them.” Rahul Patel ’86 writes, “My eldest son is finishing up his second year

at Pingree. It’s amazing how much it’s changed. My younger son will be a member of the freshman class this coming fall. Another set of Patels in Pingree! This summer we went on our annual BIG trip and headed to Croatia for two weeks at the end of June.” Carina Albano Skaaland ’96 shares a family photo from Christmas 2018. Photographed from left to right: Connor Fu (son of Lisa Albano-Fu ’88), Payton Makowskyj (daughter of Marisa Albano Makowskyj ’94), Ryan Fu (son of Lisa Albano Fu ’88), Rylee Makowskyj (daughter of Marisa Albano Makowskyj ’94), and Will Skaaland (son of Carina Albano Skaaland ’96) (see photo 1).

Tamar Salter Frieze ’99 writes, “Sending best wishes to all of my classmates from 1999 and beyond! We just moved recently to Chestnut Hill and are enjoying life in the ‘burbs with our three girls (Sloane is 9, and Marin & Avery are 6). I’ve recently formed a partnership with longtime colleagues to launch Two Eight Four Weddings & Events, a full-service wedding planning and design firm. It has been a fantastic first year and we are excited for what’s to come! I miss my brother, Tommy Salter ’02, who still lives in San Francisco with my wonderful sister-in-law and my two amazing nephews, but we see each other often and are very grateful for all of our fun family time together.”
