2022–2023 IMPACT REPORT
ABOUT PREP@PINGREE Since 2001, Prep@Pingree has provided opportunities to talented and ambitious middle school students from across Essex County, focusing on the skills necessary to succeed in middle school, high school, and beyond. Through an innovative year-round academic and cultural enrichment program that challenges students, exposes them to new experiences, and supports them through the transition from middle school to high school, students grow in confidence, expand their worldview, and celebrate their authentically unique talents. In 22 years, Prep@Pingree has graduated more than 971 young people. Our graduates have thrived in public, independent, and parochial schools; earned undergraduate and advanced degrees; joined the workforce; and contributed to the success of our greater community by sharing their stories and their service. The success of Prep@Pingree and its students depends on the generosity of partnering schools, direct service organizations, institutional and individual donors, alumni, and current staff and students. We are truly grateful for your partnership.
Dear friends and supporters, As the co-chairs of the Prep@Pingree Advisory Board, we are pleased to share with you the enclosed 2023 year-end impact report. We are deeply grateful for the mission, vision, and innovative spirit of the Malcolm Coates Prep@Pingree Program and for our generous community of donors and volunteers. Inside you will witness the impact of your support and learn about the meaningful program delivered to 140 students last summer. Our students and teachers arrived on campus everyday with unmatched enthusiasm, preparedness, and joy. Additionally, we are excited to spotlight the newly formed Alumni Leadership Council as well as PrepWorks, our summer internship program that creates pathways to employment and professional networking for our college-aged alumni. 2023 HIGHLIGHTS
A YEAR TO REMEMBER
Prep@Pingree’s 22nd year was distinguished by its meaningful connections and unmatched enthusiasm from the extended community of students, alumni, faculty, staff, and supporters. As we reflect on the year, there is much to be grateful for and to celebrate. With sustained high enrollment in our four-week summer program, a robust and impactful mentorship program, and the early success of PrepWorks, we look to the future with excitement and a great sense of possibility. Building relationships, learning from one another, and making durable connections within and beyond our community remain at the core of the important work happening at Prep@Pingree. Additional program highlights include the following: • We served 13 neighboring towns and 27 schools and partnered with Youth Development Organization (YDO), Raw Art Works, and the Boys & Girls Club. • PrepWorks placed 15 alumni in internships at local organizations and businesses including the Essex County Community Foundation (ECCF), the Nexxus Group, Harvey Performance Company, Sapere Aude Consortium, Project Onramp, Manzo Freeman Development, the City of Lynn, and Arkuda Therapeutics. • The addition of eight new staff members enabled us to offer more academic and extracurricular programs and a 3:1 student-to-teacher ratio. • In addition to our standard curriculum of math, English, and history, our summer program also included courses in financial literacy, engineering, and psychology. • We launched a new Gardening elective, taking advantage of Pingree School’s Community Learning Garden during peak summertime. Our garden beds provided a living lab for teaching and learning in science, a visual palette for art and photography coursework, an agricultural study for history, and some zen moments for all community members! • We enjoyed a visit from Pingree School faculty member and fellowship director Elisha Cho who led a discussion with students about our community read Imposter Syndrome by Patricia Park. Ms. Cho also shared her own experiences navigating multiple cultures and languages.

WHAT WE DO
ONGOING ACADEMIC AND CULTURAL ENRICHMENT Once enrolled and at no cost to them, students from our partnering organizations in Lawrence and Lynn are provided with everything they need to participate in Prep@Pingree: round-trip transportation, meals, and all school supplies. Sponsored and tuition-paying students from other communities are also invited to apply for a small number of available spaces. Each summer, students study math, English, AutoCAD, and history for four hours each day, taught by experienced public and independent school teachers assisted by high school student instructors. Classes are supplemented by co-curricular activities like public speaking, interview and application workshops, arts, and
athletics, as well as day trips within greater Boston and Essex County. Prep@Pingree also offers a mentorship program, in which all eighth-grade participants are enrolled. Through this program, Prep@Pingree alumni in high school and college are connected to one or two current students. These peer-led relationships help students to cultivate networking skills, build a support system, and remain engaged with Prep@Pingree and each other throughout the year. The 2024 summer program will begin on July 8 and end on August 2, 2024. For more information, visit www.pingree.org/prepatpingree.
COMMUNITY PARTNERS
Our community partnerships are critical to our success. Prep@Pingree students join us from an array of schools and organizations across Essex and Merrimack Counties. PREPWORKS In 2022, Pingree launched PrepWorks, a paid summer intership program for college-aged Prep@Pingree alumni. PrepWorks is a resource that creates pathways to employment, including workshops on resume building, interview preparation, and professional networking. Students are matched with local companies and organizations aligned with their academic and professional interests. The 10-week internships offer competitive compensation, mentoring, and coaching. In 2023, 15 of the 27 applicants were placed in and completed internships in greater Boston and beyond. As a pre-med student at Mount Holyoke College, Elizabeth Oluwasuyi landed a Research Development internship at Arkuda Therapeutics, a Watertown-based biotech startup, through PrepWorks. Elizabeth credits the intership with improving her critical thinking skills. “I had to figure things out through trial and error. I was creating protocols within a database and they were being rejected frequently. I had to quickly learn what solutions I could apply,” she said. The personal support and curated placements would not have been possible without the shared vision and partnership with local businesses, not-for-profit organizations, and the Prep@Pingree Advisory Board. If you or someone in your network would be interested in facilitating a PrepWorks internship for Summer 2024, please contact Prep@Pingree Program Director Paul Mayo, pmayo@pingree.org.
THE IMPACT OF PHILANTHROPY This summer, we enrolled 140 students at a cost of approximately $2,500 per student. It is only through the support of our generous donors that we can provide these bright, promising, hard-working students the opportunity to fulfill their educational goals and make their own mark on the world. By covering the cost of all transportation, food, books, and related supplies, we are able to increase access and continue to expand the reach of the Prep@Pingree program.

"Prep@Pingree was an amazing experience for me. I was able to be myself and enjoyed working with young adults, but mostly with the students.

I definitely loved working alongside Mr. Mayo and O.C. Prep@Pingree didn't feel like work, it felt more like a bonding time with the next generation. It is something I would do again with no regret."
