DAYS IN THE LIFE #PINGREESCHOOL

PINGREE MAGAZINE

PINGREE HEAD’S LETTER

Looking Forward This issue of Pingree Magazine is dedicated to the Class of 2022. One of the most joyous times on campus each year is participating in the year-end traditions that mark our students’ passage into the next chapter of their lives. Throughout their years at Pingree, the adults in this community—faculty, staff, coaches, and advisors—nurture each student’s promise, shepherd them through the turns of adolescence, and celebrate their growth and evolution. Senior Week fills us with immense pride and excitement, and this class merits extra recognition and applause. The Class of 2022 stands alone in Pingree’s history. Together, they navigated a pandemic and a host of complex issues that required them to find—and dig deep to find again— unrelenting calls for empathy, resilience, and leadership. With community as our cornerstone, the waterfall of unexpected challenges over the last few years served as a series of litmus tests. Could they sustain the capacity to adapt, grow, and care for one another? The answer: a resounding yes and then some. The individual faces in this magazine all represent unique stories of courage, love, perseverance, achievement, and growth. The class of 2022 cared deeply for this place, their teachers, and one another. Their acceptance of the evolving circumstances wasn’t passive. Each day was an active process toward self-improvement. On behalf of our faculty and staff, we could not be more proud. We are grateful the communities they join this year will benefit from their many gifts, and we are excited to welcome them back soon to continue sharing their life stories. As a bookend to summer, Pingree hosted its first Community Reunion since 2020, welcoming more than 50 years of Pingree graduates back to campus. In the years since they collected their diplomas in the Hedge Garden, life has taken our Highlanders to all corners of the globe. We remain proud to report that our alumni are leading lives of meaning and purpose in all walks of life. One of the evening’s many affirming experiences came through the highlights our alumni shared during their time at Pingree. Over and over again, they referenced how the lasting friendships developed here have proven to be foundational to who they have become. Bittersweet farewell, Class of 2022, we applaud your accomplishments and indelible legacy. We already miss you and await your return to campus. You always have a home at Pingree. Warmly, Tim Johnson Head of School

What’s New Blueprinting a Just Universe How many people get to say they spent a day with a guardian of the galaxy? Dr. Moogega Cooper, lead planetary protection engineer for NASA’s Mars 2020 mission, inspired our community to think and act with imagination and purpose during 2022’s commemorative Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Engagement. Centered on fueling positive change using imagination and curiosity, Dr. Cooper shared her personal journey as a woman in STEM as well as how her work as a planetary protection engineer connects to our ongoing efforts to build a just and equitable world. Dr. Cooper communicated that she was inspired by the questions, enthusiasm, and behavior of Pingree students. There were more than 150 students waiting in line to connect with Dr. Cooper following her presentation, which is always a sure sign of engagement.

Elin Thomas ’24 Performs at Carnegie Hall Brava! Elin Thomas ’24 was invited to perform in the Winners Recital for the Elite Music Competition at Carnegie Hall on February 19, 2022. She performed “Gretchen am Spinnrade“ by Franz Schubert, singing in German. She shares, “I love singing in front of people but I have terrible stage fright. So, before my performance, I told myself ’I have three minutes to go and perform and do what I came here to do, and then I can worry after.’ I went onto the stage with my lovely pianist, 7

took a look around to take the Hall in, and then sang. It’s such a unique feeling to hear your voice come to life in such an amazing place. I came off the stage knowing that was the best I have ever sung and that all the stress and hard work was worth it!“

IN THE HOUSE IN THE NEWS

Pingree Students Organize Ukrainian Relief Pingree students Mackenzie Holian ’23 and Nora Pierce ’23 turned their interest in international affairs into action by creating a nonprofit organization to support those impacted by the war in Ukraine.

Pingree Student and Alumnus Collaborate on Musical Track Congratulations to our own Ashley DuKatz ’23 (Ashley D.) and Brandon Greenstein ’21 (The BreakBomb Project) on their track “Waiting For!“ The project began as Brandon’s Pingree Senior Project, during which he and Ashley recorded in our studio, putting the skills they honed in Music Production and Music Ensembles into practice. The song is available on Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube.

Both joined Model UN (MUN) in ninth grade and credit the program for opening the door to a greater understanding of our interconnectedness with others. Nora shares, “Model UN lends this understanding that events taking place all the way around the world can have a huge impact on our lives and inspires empathy for people who are very different from us in some ways and similar in others.“ It is no surprise, then, that they were inspired to help upon learning more about the plight of Ukrainian refugees fleeing their homeland under Russian invasion. Mackenzie explains, “We initially wanted to incorporate Model UN into some of our work, but realized that with the ongoing Ukrainian refugee crisis, we needed to take action in support of the millions of displaced persons seeking safety and security sooner rather than later. That is why we ultimately decided to launch Students for Ukrainian Refugees.“ Since its inception in the spring, Students for Ukrainian Refugees has collected more than 500 pounds of hygiene, menstrual care, and first aid products for shipment to refugee welfare organizations working in Ukraine, Poland, and Romania. In addition to their collection drive, the students continued to look for other ways to make an impact, partnering with YMCAs, churches, and public libraries across the North Shore.

IN THE HOUSE CUM LAUDE SOCIETY

Welcome New Inductees of the Cum Laude Society We were inspired by the Cum Laude Society induction assembly in May, at which Danny Massillon ’16 shared his personal journey with students. Between his reflections upon his transition from a graduating middle school class of five students in Lynn to Prep@Pingree, Pingree, Cornell University, and now medical school, Danny led us in a singalong of Adele’s “Hello,” shared his lab experience working on trial vaccines for COVID-19, and encouraged students to find their voices unabashedly and courageously.

Junior Inductees AS WE ACKNOWLEDGE THE CUM LAUDE INDUCTEES, WE’RE RECOGNIZING THE SHARED LOVE AND COMMITMENT TO EXPLORE THAT MAKES PINGREE A SPECIAL PLACE. STUDENTS FIND THEIR VOICES AT PINGREE AND IN DOING SO THEY BUILD THE CONFIDENCE THEY NEED TO TAKE RISKS, MAKE DIFFICULT DECISIONS, AND SEIZE OPPORTUNITIES IN LIFE. This was a big takeaway for me when I graduated from Pingree and the same point rings true as I feel like I’m graduating from Pingree for the second time now.” Len Williamson ’09, departing dean of students

SPECIAL CELEBRATION ISSUE

YOU MAY NOT REALIZE THE EFFECT EACH OF YOU (AND I INCLUDE ALL OF YOU HERE TONIGHT) HAVE ON US, ON THIS PLACE. You are its foundation and I thank you and so many classes and families before you. We evolve and grow with each setback, each new batch of people. We weather and repair the cracks and learn from the broken. It’s been a privilege to have a lifetime that has been so full of you.” Liz Taft ’73, former ceramics teacher

Senior Tribute Event Marking the official start of Senior Week, our annual Senior Tribute Event is a much-cherished opportunity to honor the strength of connections between students and adults in the community. Every year, Pingree’s graduating seniors ask members of the faculty and staff to write tributes in their honor, highlighting their unique passions, achievements, and most cherished personality traits. This year, we combined Baccalaureate speakers with Senior Tributes, offering an opportunity for departing longtime faculty to impart their parting words of wisdom. Len Williamson ’09, dean of students, and Liz Taft ’73, ceramics teacher, were our keynote speakers.

SPECIAL CELEBRATION ISSUE 18

“When and if people try to undermine who you are, encourage you to walk off of your destined path, and seem to raise those hurdles up a notch, I encourage you to find your inner strength to continue strong in what you know. No matter what is thrown at you during your next few years as you transition into the real world, you always have the opportunity to go high and rise above the negatives.“ Olivia Adelabu ’22 student baccalaureate speaker

Commencement On Saturday, June 11, the 95 members of the class of 2022 ended their careers as Pingree students with a commencement ceremony held in the Hedge Garden. Students, faculty and staff, families, and friends gathered to celebrate the accomplishments of the senior class and enjoy a warm sendoff from their community. The sunshine-filled day included bagpipers, heartfelt reflections from graduates, and rousing rendition of “Life is a Highway,“ performed by the graduating members of the Pingree Music Ensemble. Josh Allen ’98 returned to campus as this year's keynote speaker, encouraging graduates to “get comfortable with the uncomfortable...[which is] where you find growth.” Congratulations, graduates! 19

Thank you for the gifts you have given to Pingree: your laughter, which if bottled, would sell out in a day; your positivity; your mature honesty; and your thoughtfulness which has touched so many and reminded us how much a smile and kind word can brighten a day.

You will forever be remembered as an invested learner, an active listener, and a tireless athlete. An understated young woman who flies under the radar but has accomplished so much. With your incredible drive and determination, you will find so much success.

Chloe, you are the epitome of the energizer bunny! Chloe keeps on working and working, she never complains. You’re the first to practice and the last to leave. Most importantly, Chloe is just fun to be around. You will be missed.

Turf, Track, and Tennis Project This summer, we completed the second phase of the turf field complex, which included the installation of a 400-meter track, field events, and a complete resurfacing of Pingree’s eight tennis courts. This comprehensive project will continue to enhance community and engagement at Pingree, ensure playable conditions for our athletic teams, generate auxiliary income, support the continued growth and success of our athletic programs, and enhance community partnerships beyond our campus. We would like to express our gratitude for the following individuals and families whose generosity made this project possible.
