L’idea di utilizzare la forma di un uccello come Timer per la cottura delle uova è abbastanza usuale, proprio per la naturale associazione tra i due soggetti. La mia idea era quella di dare un tocco divertente e moderno a questo concetto e progettare un Timer per le uova che potesse essere adatto per ogni cucina e magari rendere più allegra anche una giornata di pioggia!”

Mi sono sempre piaciute le immagini che circondano l’ambiente del caffè, le bustine di zucchero nei bar, i sacchi di chicchi di caffè provenienti dal Sud America sui quali sono stampate le illustrazioni, misteriosi messaggi provenienti da luoghi lontani dove si coltivano quei chicchi da cui deriva proprio il caffè che stiamo bevendo! Nel progettare la Caffettiera e cercando di eliminare la struttura metallica intorno alla caraffa di vetro, mi sono reso conto che il risultato era troppo asciutto e minimalista. Ho iniziato quindi a pensare a qualcosa da applicare alla caraffa sul tema del caffè, che potesse decorare e al tempo stesso richiamare alla memoria le immagini di quel mondo. Il risultato è il pittogramma di un chicco di caffè con finitura a specchio che crea l’atmosfera giusta per sorseggiare una buona tazza di caffè, e rende anche la Caffettiera più piacevole!”

I’ve always liked the imagery surrounding the coffee business, sugar packs in cafés, sacks of coffee beans from South America with exotic images & graphics on them, mysterious messages from far away places which grew the beans that made the coffee you're drinking! While designing the Cafetierre and having the idea to remove the metal structure around the glass jug, I found the result too dry & minimal and started thinking about applying something to the jug with a coffee theme which would both decorate it and recall some of this imagery from the world of coffee. The result was the pictogram of a coffee bean with a mirror finish which provides the necessary atmosphere for drinking a good cup of coffee and a more friendly Cafetiere!” Jasper Morrison

Ho chiamato “Acquerello” questa versione decorata. Righe dipinte con un pennello di petit gris. La pressione della mano non è costante ma ha piccole variazioni, tremolii, respiri, con cui si può giocare in corso d’opera. Questi piccoli “incidenti”distinguono una linea fatta a mano da una linea tracciata da una macchina, un plotter, un computer. Raccontano un tipo di energia diversa, in questo caso molto semplice, un po’ primitiva, ma nello stesso tempo viva e attuale. Sento il bisogno di rifugiarmi ogni tanto in questa naturalità, per difendermi un po’ da tutte le macchine e le cose fabbricate che abbiamo intorno.” Guido Venturini

I called this decorated version, “Acquerello”. Lines painted with a petit gris brush. Manually done, variations in pressure reveal subtle vacillations, a slight wobble, a breath being taken. All this can be used to one’s advantage while painting. These little “accidents” distinguish a line drawn by hand from one made by a machine, a plotter or a computer. They tell the story of a different kind of energy, in this case very simple, a little primitive, but with a sense of immediacy and full of vitality. Every so often, I feel the need to seek solace in such natural activities, to defend myself a bit from all the machines and manufactured things that surround us.” Guido Venturini

l corpo centrale della serie è stato presentato nel semestre scorso ed è composto di utensili in alluminio con rivestimento antiaderente. “Dressed” viene oggi completato con alcune altre tipologie per le quali è più indicato l’acciaio inossidabile: La Pentola, la Casseruola a due manici, lo Scolatoio, il Pasta-set e il Bollilatte.

he central core of this series was presented in last semester’s collection, comprising aluminium utensils with a non-stick coating. Joy n.1” è in ordine di tempo l’ultimo frutto della ricerca sui materiali che da anni stiamo sviluppando con la collaborazione di Claudia Raimondo nell’intenzione di coniugare gli aspetti tecnologici e produttivi delle lavorazioni a freddo dei metalli con quelli dei linguaggi espressivi dei nostri designer: “Un foglio d’acciaio, con un unico gesto tecnico, diventa forma e decoro. È la forma della coppa che ci regala la sfaccettatura con il gioco dei riflessi luminosi, come nel ricordo di oggetti forgiati da metalli preziosi. È la sfaccettatura a disegnarne la forma: ampia e aperta, dai margini non netti. Un modo per ripensare l’arte della lavorazione dei metalli alla luce della ricerca sulle superfici generate dai software di disegno contemporanei, come le ritroviamo nelle pelli architettoniche degli edifici all’avanguardia. La texture evoca le campiture del mondo digitale, per re-interpretare l’acciaio giocando sull’indeterminatezza del disegno che rende l'oggetto simile a qualcosa di fluido e naturale anche se cristallizzato in una materia solida.” alberto alessi claudia raimondo

Joy n.1” is chronologically the latest result of years of research on materials that we have been developing in collaboration with Claudia Raimondo. The intention is to combine the technological and production aspects inherent in the cold working of metals with the unique characteristics of our individual designers: “A piece of sheet metal, with a single technical gesture, becomes form and decoration. It’s the shape of the bowl itself that gives us the dazzling play of reflections off the faceting, reminiscent of objects forged from precious metals. It’s the faceting that gives it its open, wide shape, with an uneven rim. It’s one way to readdress the art of metalworking in light of the research carried out in the field of advanced software designed for generating surface treatments, like those found in the skins of avant-garde works of contemporary architecture, textures that evoke background patterns from the digital world, reinterpreting steel, playing on the indeterminant nature of design, which makes the object look like it’s fluid and something natural even though its actually crystallised in solid matter.” alberto alessi claudia raimondo

onica Förster, designer svedese, ha passato i primi anni della sua vita nelle cucine dei grandi ristoranti guidati dal padre, ottimo cuoco. La sensibilità estetico-culinaria acquisita in quegli ambienti riaffiora, a me sembra, anche in questa piccola ma gustosa scultura funzionale per i banchi delle nostre cucine.
onica Förster, a designer from Sweden, spent the first years of her life in the kitchens of great restaurants headed by her father, an excellent chef. The culinary and aesthetic sensitivity she acquired in such surroundings emerges, it seems to me, even in this small, but tantilizing, functional sculpture for kitchen counters.
“L’idea per questo progetto proviene dal mondo della cucina e dall’esigenza di dosare gli ingredienti. Abbiamo preso in considerazione i vecchi pesi che venivano utilizzati in diversi modi sia in Svezia che in altre parti del mondo. Quando si andava a fare la spesa, questi pesi servivano per capire quanto si doveva pagare la merce. Con questi piccoli oggetti imipilabili è possibile costruire delle torri e misurare da 0,2 litri fino ad un minimo di 5 millilitri. Gli oggetti si impilano l’uno sull’altro oppure uno dentro l’altro. I contenitori possono essere utilizzati come strumenti di misura, per servire in tavola oppure per contenere erbe o spezie.”
“The idea to this project has come from cooking and baking and the need of measuring the ingredients. We have looked at old weights that were used in different ways in Sweden and elsewhere. When shopping in stores the weights were used to understand how much money to pay for the goods. With these small stackable objects you can build towers and measure from 0,2 liters down to 5 milliliters. The objects both stack on top of each other and inside each other. The bowls can be used as measuring tools as well as serving bowls or maybe as pots to put some herbs or spices in.”

versatile and hyperactive designer, Denmark’s Jakob Wagner has proposed many projects to us over the years. Among them, for now, we have chosen to produce this Portable table that can be carried to a variety of places around the house. uesto Orologio da tavolo è entrato in produzione nel 1988, e ci è rimasto fino al 1999, anno in cui la cui produzione è stata sospesa a causa delle difficoltà produttive. Sono contento che siamo riusciti a rimetterlo in catalogo, in una nuova versione con impiallacciatura in legno di acero: si tratta di un bell’esempio della fase apicale del talento postmoderno di Michael Graves, che fa qui l’occhiolino al da lui tanto amato stile Biedermeier. his shelf Clock went into production in 1988, and remained in our catalogue until 1999, the year in which it was suspended due to production difficulties. I’m pleased to announce that we are now able to put it back in the catalogue, in a new mapleveneer version: it is a fine example of Michael Graves’ talent at the height of his postmodern phase, in this case, with a nod to his beloved Biedermeier style. Qualche anno fa, mentre facevo colazione in un hotel, ho usato una saliera per condire l’uovo che stavo mangiando. Forse perché non mi piaceva quello che avevo in mano, ho abbozzato uno schizzo dai tratti leggeri che raffigurava un oggetto per contenere grani o liquidi. Lo schizzo è rimasto appeso al muro del mio studio per non so quanto tempo, tanto che non ricordavo più cosa rappresentasse. Forse un grattacielo? Poi, un giorno, mi è tornata alla mente l’immagine di quella mattina in hotel e mi sono ricordato il motivo per cui avevo disegnato quello schizzo. L’ho portato subito al mio laboratorio e ho chiesto ad Iris di realizzare, seguendo lo schizzo, una serie di prototipi fatti con sapone alla glicerina; le forme dovevano sembrare come fratelli e sorelle, piccoli e grandi, ma tutti membri della stessa famiglia. Iris ha creato un bellissimo servizio di oggetti di sapone che sembravano di vetro smerigliato. Grazie al team Alessi, una vecchia idea è ora divenuta realtà.” Peter Zumthor

Some years ago whilst having breakfast in a hotel, I used a salt shaker to season my egg. Maybe because I disagreed with what I had in my hand I made a quick sketch of thin lines suggesting an object which could hold grains or liquids. The sketch hung on the wall of my atelier for some time until I no longer knew what it represented. A skyscraper? Then one day, the memory of my morning in the hotel came back to me and I recalled why I made the sketch. At once, I took the sketch down to my model workshop and asked Iris to produce a series of glycerine soap models according to the sketch which should look like brothers and sisters, small and big but all members of the same family. She shaped a beautiful menagerie of glycerine soap objects resembling frosted glass. Thanks to the Alessi team an old idea has now become real.” Peter Zumthor
