Plants, animals, humans, and spiritual beings in the works of contemporary painters from the Shipibo-Konibo community
This project brings together a group of paintings by Indigenous artists from the Shipibo-Konibo community, located in the Ucayali region of the Peruvian Amazon. This group of creators currently resides in Cantagallo, Lima, the largest urban Indigenous community in Peru. They come from different generations, who since the late 20th century have been developing pictorial proposals on canvases and later in other formats such as murals and installations, which have transformed contemporary perspectives on the arts in the Peruvian and Latin American context. Toward the end of the 20th century, they began their proposals focused on the research and representation of the Amazon’s flora and fauna, as well as the mythical and spiritual beings that inhabit the Amazonian forest. Today, for these artists, painting is a way of affirming their identities as contemporary artists and defending alternative ways of knowledge and living in harmony in cities and forests, as they seek to recover and transform the history, memory, and mythology of their peoples. In their paintings, the artists of the Shipibo-Konibo people integrate community
knowledge about the relationships and exchanges between humans and spiritual beings, as well as the knowledge of the geometric designs of kené and its history—patterns that evoke the encounters between plants, humans, animals, and their relations in balance with the rivers, forests, and their protective spirits. Furthermore, in their works, the artists transform traditional knowledge and update it to reflect their experiences of migration, assert criticisms of global environmental issues, the devastation of the Amazon, and the need to protect Amazonian ecosystems.

Sculptures by Rafael Barrios and Rafael Rangel Serrano
Into the Open encapsulates the idea of emergence and transformation. It implies leaving behind confines—whether physical, mental, or emotional—and embracing a state of greater visibility, awareness, or opportunity.
Rafael Barrios and Rafael Rangel Serrano approach the sculpture from their own place. They seek discomfort in abstraction, Rangel Serrano through the disorder of anarchic compositions while Barrios through the challenge of the two-dimensional and the three-dimensional, experimenting with the modification of the rules of geometry.
Rafael Barrios
Rafael Barrios, a Venezuelan artist born in 1947 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, began his career at a young age. He studied drawing and painting at the Museum of Fine Arts in Caracas, winning the “National Youth Painting” award in 1963. He completed his edu-
cation in Venezuela, Canada, and the United States, graduating with honors in “Fine Arts” and “Communication and Design” from the Ontario College of Art in Toronto. He also pursued postgraduate studies in “Fine Arts” and “Monumental Sculpture Techniques” at New York University. Throughout his career, he worked as an art director for UNESCO, a creative consultant in film, a set designer for magazines such as Vogue and Esquire, and a design professor in Caracas. His notable works include sculptures and murals in public spaces like the Polar Foundation and the Museum of Contemporary Art of Caracas, as well as installations in New York, Paris, and Seville. He has exhibited in the Americas, Europe, and the Middle East, with pieces in collections of institutions such as the National Art Gallery of Caracas and private collections of figures like King Juan Carlos of Spain and Princess Gloria of Germany.
