Summer 2013

Massive support across Stockport for our Supermarket collections A couple of weeks ago an army of volunteers descended ‘en masse’ on Tesco Stores at Handforth Dean and Portwood, to take part in Tesco’s national promotion with the Foodbank network. Arranged through the Trussell Trust HQ, it gave us the opportunity to collect for 2 d ays at both stores and replenish our dwindling food stocks in the nick of time. The last few months has seen an unprecedented increase in the demand for the services of the Foodbank, precipitated b y the changes to crisis loans and the continuing re-‐organisation of the

benefit system that is affecting thousands in our Borough. Our task, however, is to strive to meet this demand and our thanks are extended to Tesco and the countless number of shoppers who donated so generously to the collection. For their part Tesco will be adding to the amount collected by uplifting its value by 30% so we can continue shopping there for some time to come, courtesy of their customers. In the next few weeks we will be joining with Asda in a n ational promotion and plans are in place with Sainsbury’s in Hazel Grove too.

Marple Hall School Hundreds of cans and packets of food as well as a substantial cash donation were collected by the pupils of Marple Hall School at their Summer term non uniform day. Collecting the food on behalf of the Foodbank, M ike Atkinson praised and thanked the pupils for “their outstanding support towards those who are in real need in the Stockport area.”

Recent figures from the Council have confirmed that there are now over 9,000 children living within the definition of “Poverty” in our Borough. If we were to add to this number a carer or parent for each child, then the total number would not fit inside S tockport County’s Football ground! For every child living in poverty, there is a household too, and it’s these homes that we want to support wherever we can. Please consider referring such households to the Foodbank if you feel they are facing a crisis.
