The mission of the East Carolina Alumni Association is to inform, involve, and serve members of the ECU family throughout their lifelong relationship with the university.
LETTER FROM THE CHAIR Dear East Carolina alumni, It has been another great year at the East Carolina Alumni Association, full of reunions, networking events, alumni tailgates, student activities, scholarship fundraisers, and more! This 2013–2014 Annual Report shares our successes over the past year and shows the impact we’ve had on the East Carolina community. Our mission is to inform, involve, and serve members of the East Carolina family throughout their lifelong relationship with the university. This year, we really focused on what we believe in. At the East Carolina Alumni Association, we believe in increasing the power of the Pirate alumni network, impacting the student experience, and advancing the university. The 2013–2014 Annual Report shows our efforts in each of these three areas. In addition to numbers, you’ll also see the names and faces of those who have made our progress on these goals possible. Don’t forget to go to PirateAlumni.com to watch the video that goes along with each of the three sections! I’d like to thank all of you who support ECU through the East Carolina Alumni Association. This report is a testament to your loyal and generous support. Angela Moss ’97, ’98 Chair, East Carolina Alumni Association Board of Directors

We Believe Networking Events We held 13 networking events from Wilmington to Charlotte and Atlanta to Washington, DC. Networking events are a great way to tap into the power of the Pirate alumni network! Each event features alumni who are leaders in their industries and communities.
Pirate Career Casts We held 11 Pirate Career Casts this past year. We partnered with Talent Marks to offer these interactive webcasts facilitated by industry experts to offer our alumni professional advice on today’s competitive job market.
This past year, 309 alumni participated in 8 reunion events, including the East Carolina Teachers College (ECTC) Reunion, the Collegians Reunion, the Magnolia Belles Reunion, and the Golden Alumni Reunion for the class of 1964.
Pirate Business Directory This past year, we started a directory of businesses owned or run by East Carolina alumni. This has been a tremendous success with more than 160 entries. This is a great way for Pirates to support and help each other!
Regional Chapters and Affinity Groups The official Black Alumni Chapter of the East Carolina Alumni Association was refocused this past year. 220 black alumni participated in several events for Homecoming 2013. In addition, 8 regional chapters held more than 40 events across the Pirate Nation.
Reunions Each year, the alumni association hosts reunions for classes and affinity groups, providing activities focused on bringing alumni back to campus, renewing old friendships, and reminding alumni why they love East Carolina.

We Forever Pirates
Alumni Scholarships
We believe that a lifelong relationship with ECU begins long before graduation. Our student membership program helps students make the most of their East Carolina experience. Forever Pirates are current ECU students who pledge to become lifetime members of the alumni association. They enjoy all the benefits of membership, like networking opportunities with alumni, without having to pay dues until after graduation. At the completion of its fourth year, the student Forever Pirates program has 1,910 members. New this year, 8 Forever Pirates went on a trip to network with alumni in New York City in March 2014.
Alumni Scholarships are given every spring to current undergraduates who demonstrate academic success, leadership, and service. In March 2014, we awarded 23 Alumni Scholarships of $1,000 or $2,500 for the upcoming 2014–2015 academic year. Read more about these scholarship recipients and hear what they have to say in our video at PirateAlumni.com/2014Scholars.
Robert H. Wright Alumni Leadership Awards Magnolia Belles Our all-female student a cappella group lends spirit and tradition to alumni events with their renditions of the fight song and alma mater, as well as contemporary hits. 20 members performed several events including the spring concert.

Believe in Impacting the Student Experience Freshman Sendoffs We hosted 14 Freshman Sendoffs from North Carolina to New York in July and August 2013. Incoming freshmen and their families could get to know fellow students and alumni from their area before coming to campus in the fall. Alumni were present to talk with students and help them begin their lifelong relationship with ECU.
ECU Today
Senior Celebration Dinner and Candlelight Ceremony
In March 2014, we hosted 7 ECU Today events to help convince prospective students to choose ECU. High school seniors who had been accepted but who had not yet committed to ECU could talk to alumni and admissions staff about all the great opportunities here at East Carolina!
Past met present when members of the classes of 1964 and 2014 participated in these two traditions over commencement weekend. 379 attendees enjoyed a delicious meal on the mall followed by a special candlelighting ceremony in which 1964 graduates passed the torch of Pirate pride to the 2014 graduates. Hundreds of candles illuminated the night sky in honor of two milestones: graduation and the 50th class reunion. Also, we held the first dinner for December graduates, with 202 in attendance.
Pirate Alumni Legacy Brunch The inaugural Pirate Alumni Legacy Brunch was a resounding success with more than 146 students and alumni in attendance. We also awarded the first Legacy Parent of the Year Award to Ted Hollingsworth ’79. This event honored families of current students with two or more generations of Pirates and celebrated the history and tradition that define ECU.
Be sure to check out PirateAlumni.com/AnnualReport to see video of Magnolia Belles leader Jayme Lynn ’14, Forever Pirate Antonio Jackson, and our scholarship recipients!

Scholarship Fundraisers Some of our biggest events each year are our scholarship fundraisers. The Alumni Scholarship program helps ECU retain accomplished students who will advance ECU’s reputation and continue to give back to the university as alumni. In addition to supporting current students, these events have become traditions where alumni can come together for a common cause and demonstrate ECU’s spirit of service.
Alumni Awards We believe in honoring the accomplishments and service of East Carolina alumni. Each time we share the achievements of our alumni, we show the value of an East Carolina education and increase acclaim for the university. More than 244 alumni and supporters attended the 2013 Alumni Awards Ceremony and Dinner, the alumni association’s signature event, held each fall.
