The Music Industry
What is the Music Industry? 1 Well, like any other business, the music industry sells! It sells written music known as “Compositions” as well as recordings and musical performances. There are many parts to the music industry that make the whole thing function. These include performers, managers, writers, record companies, stores, agents, lawyers and many others. There would not be a music business at all if it was not for one very important ingredient... “Talent”. It all starts from the point of a person having a certain musical
talent. There would be no lawyers, no record companies, no record stores and no managers without somebody with the talent to sing or write music. This talent usually shows itself at a young age when an individual finds a passion for music. Once the talent has been found by the talents scouts or talent shows that are on TV, the music industry goes into full swing to make sure that you the music lover gets a chance to not only see the artist with talent, but more importantly purchase their music.

There are a number of ways that a 3 person or band with musical talent can be found or discovered. First of all, they can put a “Demo” (demonstration) tape together. This is basically the musical equivalent of a CV. It is a sample sound recording that the singer or band put together of their music which will hopefully get the attention of a record company or music producer. The use of A&R (Artists & Repertoire) managers may also be used by record labels to scout out new talent. Many singers and bands have been discovered playing
their music in night-clubs or music 4 bars by these type of talent scouts. Once a marketable talent has been identified by a record label or music producer, they may be offered a recording contract (record deal ). A recording contract is simply a legal agreement between the artist and the record label of the conditions in which they will work together. These contracts can be quite detailed, they basically offer the artist a chance to have the recording process financed in return for a share of the rights to the recording. Recording Deals are
a major part of the music industry. 5 Artists hire a group of people to assist them with their affairs. First they may hire an entertainment lawyer who will help them understand and assist them in their contracts with the record companies. A business manager will also be employed to handle all the financial affairs of the artist ( Tax and book-keeping). Tour managers are also needed to ensure that an artist/s on tour has everything looked after for them. The duties of a tour manager would include arranging the tickets for travelling, organizing the hotel,
restaurants etc etc...There are 6 many people that successful artists need to employ to ensure that their careers are handled in a professional and profitable way. Royalties Royalties are basically the money that is paid from a record label or other sources to a songwriter or performer. There are a few different types of royalties which are paid out for different reasons. Performance Royalties These are payments due to the songwriter by Performance Rights Organizations (PRO) from fees the PRO
collect from broadcasters such as 7 radio and television stations for the rights to broadcast copyright material. Artist/Record Royalties:These are payments given by a record label to the performer of a song. Mechanical Royalties:These are payments given by the record label to the writer of a song. Synchronization Royalties:These payments are usually paid to a songwriter for use of their material on TV. Ok, how is all the music that is played in the world on a daily basis tracked so that the writers, publishers
& performers receive their 8 royalties? Well, this is usually tracked by “Performance Rights Organizations” (PRO). It is the job of the PRO to collect the performing rights royalties on behalf of its members, composers and music publishers. The PRO then pays these royalties to its members. The PRO license public performances of their members music to places such as TV channels, restaurants, clubs and stores. There are PRO organizations in most countries of the world monitoring how and when their members work is being played.

It does not matter if you are a sole performer or part of a band, having a manager or management team can be very beneficial to your
career. The role of a manager in 10 the music industry is to guide the career of their client. His duties may include taking care for their day to day business affairs, helping them find the right agent and basically helping them make the right decisions that affect their careers. The managers percentage rate on earnings by an artist is usually agreed at contract stage, indeed if the artist becomes very successful, the earnings of the managers will also increase. It is also quite normal that as an artist grows in popularity, the workload of the
manager may also increase. From 11 dealing with record companies to tabloids, legal or otherwise, the role of a manager in the music industry can be very time consuming position. Record Labels: A record label is a company that markets and sells music recordings and videos. The record label also may look after the production, manufacture, distribution, marketing and promotion of an artists song. The record label is extremely important to an artist as it enables their music to be seen by a much wider audience through TV and radio.
When an artists joins a record label, they are also assisted in many other ways to promote their work. Publicists for the record label help the artist promote their products in stores and other media outlets. An Independent record label (Indie) is a small record label that funds itself outside that of a major record label. Some indie labels sign agreements with the major record labels as they may rely on certain international licensing or distribution deals.
When these smaller labels are bought by the larger record label, they become a unit or division known as an “imprint” of the larger record label. There are 4 major record labels today that control quite a number of Indie labels as well as 70% of music sales worldwide. 1/Universal Music Group 2/Sony BMG Music Entertainment 3/EMI Group 4/Warner Music Group. Most music stars of today are signed with one of these big 4.
