The early line-up for the band consisted of Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ian Stewart, Charlie Watts, Brian Jones and Bill Wyman. Their early music was dominated by R&B cover songs. By 1969 Brian Jones had already left the band leaving the leadership in the capable hands of Richards and Jagger. Mick Taylor who was brought on board to replace Jones had also left the band by 1974
The band first became popular in Europe before becoming successful on the North American circuit. With numerous studio and live albums, their estimated worldwide sales are over 200 million albums. In 1989, the Rolling Stones were inducted into the Rock and Roll hall of fame.
Two other members of “Blues 4 Incorporated” , Ian Stewart and Charlie Watts would also later Join Richards and Jaggers band. By June, 1962, the line-up was: Jagger, Richards, Jones, Stewart, Taylor and drummer Tony Chapman.

It was on this tour in the Autumn of 1963 that the Rolling Stones would get the training to perfect their stage act.
According to Keith Richards, it was Brian Jones who name the band after seeing a Muddy Waters LP lying on the floor of which one of the tracks was “Rollin Stone”.
It was on the 12th of July 1962 that the band played their first gig at the Marquee club, in Oxford street in London. Billed as the “Rollin Stones”, the line-up was Jagger, Richards, Jones with Stewart on piano, Taylor on Bass and Chapman on Drums. After securing a Sunday afternoon residency at the “Crawdaddy”, a music venue club in Richmond, Surrey, the band would be offered their first management deal by former Beatles publicist Andrew Loog Oldham.

The recording contract negotiated with “Decca Records” gave the Rolling stones 3 times the normal royalty rate along with artistic control over recordings as well as ownership of the recording masters. With Oldham managing the band, one of his first decisions was to change the name of the band from the “Rollin Stones” to the “Rolling Stones”. As Stewart did not fit the look of the band, he was removed from its line up in May 1963 but played as an occasional

The Rolling stones first single, a cover of Chuck Berry’s “Come On” was released on the 7th of June 1963, however the stones refused to play it at live gigs. Fan club members, through their purchase of the single at record shops help “Come On” rise to 21 in the UK single charts. Later on in 1963 with a chart single under their belt, the band began their first UK concert tour as a supporting act for Big American stars Little Richard, The Everly Brothers and Bo Diddley.

The Stones first US tour happened in the summer of 64. During the tour the stones appeared on the Dean Martin show who mocked them a little over their hairstyles and clothes. It was on this same tour that they got a chance to meet some of the artists that had influenced them , including Muddy Waters. They also spent some recording on this American tour at the

The first Richards/Jagger song composition “The Last Time” did not come until 1965 were it hit No 1 in the UK charts and number 9 in America. This song was later credited by Richards as giving them the confidence to write songs independently for the stones.

It was in the early 1950’s that 3 Mick Jagger and Keith Richards would become friends and classmates at Wentworth primary school in Dartford, Kent. Although their families moved apart, the 2 friends would meet again at Dartford train station. Realizing that they had a mutual interest in the same type of music led to the formation of the band with Dick Taylor which would later go on to worldwide fame. Taylor, Jagger and Richards discovered Brian Jones as he played with the group “Blues Incorporated” at the Ealing Jazz club.
