Euphrates river to water the gardens. 5 A chain pump was probably used to carry out this job, which would bring buckets of water to the top levels of the gardens and releasing it down through the terraces watering the plants and trees on each level. Nobody is quite sure how big the gardens were, however historians tell us the gardens were about 400ft (122m) wide by 400ft (122m) long and more than 75ft (23m) high.

The Statue of Zeus at Olympia: Long ago in ancient times the Greeks held one of their most important world. The temple was built by 9 king croesus in honour of the goddess. The temple was used as a marketplace and a religious institution. The temple was made of marble and was famous not only for its great size which was about 340 x 180 ft ( 104 x 155m ), but also for the great works of art and the beautiful bronze statues made by the great sculptors and artists of the time. In 356 B.C, the temple was destroyed after being burnt to the ground by a man named Herostratus. Herostratus was a young Ephesian who wanted to have his name go down in history and achieved it through this evil act.

City at the time wanted to cheer 4 up his wife so he built her an artificial mountain with rooftop gardens which was built within the walls of the royal palace. These gardens were known as the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. They did not actually hang, they were a series of overhanging rooftop gardens built one above the other and resting on square hollow pillars. These pillars were hollow in order for large trees to be planted inside. Because Babylon rarely received any rain, in order for the gardens to survive, water was taken from the

The pyramids are made of yellowish 2 limestone blocks. Inside the pyramids are a series of passages and the interior burial chamber usually called “the kings chamber” is made of huge granite blocks. Approximately 2.3 million blocks of stone were cut, transported and assembled to create the 5,750,000 ton Khufu structure. It is not certain how many men it took to build the Great Pyramid, however it is thought to be between 20,000 and 100,000 who took 20 years to complete it. The question of exactly how the pyramids were built is still uncertain, as in those days the workmen would not have

had the machinery or tolls that are 3 available today. However, the most common answer to the question is that the Egyptians made a sloping and encircling embankment of brick, sand and earth which was increased in height and length as the pyramid rose. The limestone blocks were then hauled up the ramp on rollers and sledges. There are over fifty pyramids scattered around Cairo alone, however the most famous were the three built at Giza.

Festivals, the Olympic Games. As 6 you know, the Olympic games are still held every four years, but they originally started in 776 B.C. The reason for them beginning in the first place was to honour their god Zeus. The games were held at a site called “Olympia” which consisted of a stadium and a sacred area where temples were located. It was in one of these temples that the great statue of Zeus stood. A man named Phidias who was a great sculptor was chosen to construct this great statue and it took him eight years to complete it. The statue was over 40 ft (12m)

in height and 22ft (7m) wide 7 and showed the figure of Zeus sitting on a throne which was decorated with precious stones and gold. In his right hand was the statue of Nike ( the goddess of victory). The skin of the statue was made of Ivory and his beard and robe were made of gold. The statue was so high that visitors were amazed at the size of the throne that Zeus was sitting on. For years after the statue was completed, it attracted visitors from all over the world and would come and stare in amazement at this man made structure.

After Olympia was struck by a 8 series of earthquakes, floods and landslides, the statue of Zeus was transported to a palace in Constantinople. There it stood until it was destroyed by a raging fire in A.D 462. You can still see replicas of this statue in museums around the world.

In fact the people of Ephesus were 10 so ashamed that they banned anyone from speaking to Herostratus and anyone caught talking to him would be put to death. Not long after the temple was burnt to the ground, a new one was commissioned. The temple was finally destroyed by invading Goths in 262 A.D and was never rebuilt as the roman emperor Constantine who rebuilt most of Ephesus was a Christian and had no interest in pagan temples.

the city of Bodrum in south west 11 Turkey. The mausoleum was completed around 350 B.C and was only finished three years after the king had died. His wife Artemisia made sure that the tomb was finished and then named it the “Mausoleum” after the king. The Visitors that came to view the tomb were fascinated with the amount of detail that went into the decorations and statues that surrounded the outside of the structure at different levels. There were statues in various sizes of people and different animals with the top of the temple comprising of a step pyramid with a horse drawn chariot placed

at the top. The height of the 12 mausoleum was 140ft (43m ). The ashes of the king and queen were put into golden caskets and placed at the base of the building surrounded by stone lions guarding the chamber. Around 1800 years after its completion, the mausoleum was completely destroyed due to an earthquake and over time a castle was built using some of the stones from the ruins. While building the castle, the burial chamber of the king and his wife were uncovered by Christian knights. The burial chamber was later raided and

The statue was so impressive that 15 even when it had fallen, many people travelled to see it. When an Egyptian king offered to pay to have it rebuilt, the Rhodians refused, they thought that the god Helios had been offended by the statue and had used the earthquake to destroy it. The fallen statue was left lying in the harbour until 654 A.D at which time the Arabs conquered Rhodes and the colossus was broken up into smaller pieces and sold off as scrap metal. Legend has it that it took 900 camels loads to carry it away.

The Lighthouse of Alexandria: 16 The great lighthouse of Alexandria Was built around 270 B.C and was located on the island of Pharaohs in the harbour of Alexandria, Egypt. After its completion the lighthouse stood at 400ft (122m) tall. When you think of the lighthouses of today, you think about long thin structures, however the lighthouse of Alexandria was more like a modern day skyscraper. Because Alexandria had two harbours, the construction of a lighthouse was necessary in order to guide the sailors into the harbour.

19 achieve through sheer determination. Today of course it is a little different and the world moves at a much faster pace. The buildings that surround us are being built higher and higher, the roads that takes us to our various destinations are getting longer and longer. Unlike the old days when the seven wonders were being built, today's man made structures are being built in relatively short spaces of time. However, there are structures in our world today that could be looked upon as the “Modern day wonders of the World” because of their size and beauty.

20 Who knows, in a couple of hundred years from now, these modern day wonders may find their way into the history books of that generation. Take a look at some of these modern day wonders.

The lower level was square and rose to about 200ft ( 61m ) in height. Inside this square area was a spiral ramp that was used to carry goods to the top. The next level consisted of a tower with eight sides, then the final part was a cylinder where the fire burned to provide the light. Visitors could stand and look out from the observation platform at the top of the first level. There was also a viewing point at the top of the eight sided tower.

18 Once again like some of the other wonders of the ancient world, the lighthouse was destroyed by earthquakes. The great lighthouse of Alexandria is also known as the Pharaohs of Alexandria as “Pharaohs” means lighthouse in Spanish, Italian and French. Modern Wonders: The list of the seven wonders of the world was originally compiled around the second century. Although the men who built them did not have the equipment that we have today for building large structures, it did show the world what man could actually
