Dates: The same course is offered on the 14th of February and the 23rd of May 2015.

Charcoal Making

Time: 10:00-16:00 h. Venue: Pishwanton one of the few places in Scotland where you can produce your own charcoal from its own woodland by-products. Cost: £60 (including materials and own bag of charcoal). Promotion : £55 if you bring a

friend or booking three weeks in advance. Booking: To ensure a place pay a deposit of £50. Learning Disabilities : This course is suitable for people with special needs.

After leaving Gifford, at the top of the road splits into three. One road leads to East Saltoun, one past Gifford Golf Club, the other to Longyester. Take the left hand turn for three miles. Take the first sharp turn right just before Longyester farm turn right and follow the road for about a mile. Pishwanton Community Wood is on the right hand side of the road. You will notice a large wooden shed and the turf roof of our craft workshop. Please park in the car park provided, which is a hundred metres further up the road from these buildings.

Charcoal has been made by various methods. The

This course will teach you how to make your own charcoal from woodland by-products. Spend a day in stunning Pishwanton Wood, ancient woodland, which has been carefully studied and looked after following Goethean scientific and biodynamic management principles over 20 years. We will burn selected tress from the wood following different processes. By the end of the course you will have learned how to make charcoal in a metal barrel, have a good grasp of charcoal making and have your own bag of charcoal for your barbecue.

Lump

charcoal, which is made by burning pieces of wood until all the impurities are gone and only the coal remains, is an excellent choice for outdoor grilling. It's expensive to buy lump charcoal at the store, but making your own is an easy, cheap and simple solution.

The Teacher Malcolm Lemmon, a man with a wealth of experience in green woodworking, woodland management, timber framing and historic carpentry will lead the course.
