Pishwanton Wood
“Wouldst thou know thyself, Look into the world, Wouldst thou know the world, Look deep within thyself.” Jacob Boehme Pishwanton Centre for Goethean Science and Art nestles in a piece of woodland and marsh at the foot of the Lammermuir Hills in S.E. Scotland. Abounding in flora and fauna long excluded from the mainstream agriculture which surrounds it, the place has a haven quality of quiet peace and harmony, where humans are welcome to learn and live within this harmony, and machines and electronic devices are not. The sixty acres (37 hectares) of undulating landscape and multiple habitats swamped by a complex system of springs is managed according to biodynamic/organic principles and provides a wonderful outdoor classroom, research laboratory and venue for therapeutic work. All landscape development and the beautiful craft made buildings have been researched and designed by consensus growing out of Goethe’s scientific methodology of the study of the place (See Christopher Day’s Consensus Desig
