EXCLUSIVE PREVIEW GUIDE

SUMMER SEASON

STAY 6 DAYS, SEE 6 PLAYS

Welcome to this exclusive guide to the 2017 Summer Season at Scotland’s favourite theatre. popular than this year’s Carousel – so don’t delay, book today!

John Durnin in rehearsal

Our new Season of six outstanding shows in repertoire goes on sale to the general public in the New Year, so make the most of this sneak preview and purchase your tickets now, securing your preferred seats, on your preferred dates, at very special rates! Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? and Well, Did You Evah! are just two of the fabulous Cole Porter numbers in our 2017 flagship musical, the exuberant High Society. With all the trademark PFT production values that audiences have come to expect, we anticipate that this will be even more

Alan Bennett’s People opened to resounding critical acclaim at London’s National Theatre in 2012. This perfectly pitched comedy about the heritage industry showcases Bennett at the peak of his powers, so if you enjoyed The Lady In The Van or Habeas Corpus, then this Scottish première is for you. Warning: aching sides might be a problem . . . The Ruling Class by Olivier Award-winning playwright Peter Barnes is another highlight: a funny, frenetic, subversive and, most importantly, wickedly entertaining satire about an aristocratic family confronting the possibility that one of their own is a paranoid schizophrenic with a Messiah complex. What more could you ask? Well, how about three misfit couples, in three kitchens, over three successive Christmases? Alan Ayckbourn’s 1970s classic, Absurd Person Singular, is an irresistible masterpiece that combines suburban sit-com with a host of those

horribly truthful, cringe-inducing, howlout-loud moments for which its author is renowned. The work of two great Scottish playwrights completes our Summer-long festival of theatre: J.M. Barrie’s Mary Rose, one of the biggest successes of his career, is a poignant, chilling supernatural story about innocence and the loss of youth, set either side of the First World War, whilst David Greig’s Europe is a dark, complex tale of shifting borders, refugees and nationhood, which follows in the footsteps of PFT’s hugely successful production of the same playwright’s Pyrenees in 2015.

Music and Lyrics by Cole Porter • Book by Arthur Kopit

Additional Lyrics by Susan Birkenhead • Based on the play The Philadelphia Story by Philip Barry Also based on the Turner Entertainment Co. motion picture High Society

“Have you heard, it’s in the stars, next July we collide with Mars. Well, did you evah! What a swell party this is . . .”

For the socialites of New England, it will be the Wedding of the Year: seven hundred guests, magnums of Veuve Clicquot and the beautiful, sophisticated Tracy Lord as the bride-to-be. And the groom? According to the invitations, that honour goes to self-made man, George Kittredge. And even if George is, well, not quite from the top drawer - and a little dull his upright character perfectly matches Tracy’s reputation as a paragon of virtue. But then on the eve of the nuptials, Mike Connor, a down-at-heel reporter from one of New York’s scandal sheets, turns up to cover the wedding. And this rugged ‘man of the people’ is immediately smitten with the divine Miss Lord . . .

drops in unannounced. Their marriage may have ended tempestuously, but Dexter is still dangerously attractive . . . Add an estranged father, a confused mother, a meddling younger sister, an amorous uncle, a lovesick photographer, a not-so-hushed-up family scandal, mix well - and you have the makings of a very potent cocktail indeed . . ! After our smash-hit production of Kiss Me, Kate in 2010, PFT returns to the genius of Cole Porter with a large cast, a fabulous swing band and some great songs (including True Love, Let’s Misbehave, Well, Did You Evah! and Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?) for the Scottish première of this witty, sparkling, high energy musical!

Even worse, Tracy’s first husband, the charming playboy, C. K. Dexter Haven, also

Mary Rose by J.M. Barrie

“I have sometimes thought that our girl is curiously young for her age . . . you know how just a touch of frost may stop the growth of a plant and yet leave it blooming . . .” When the young Mary Rose climbs an apple tree and announces her plans to marry, the news is greeted by her doting parents first with unbridled joy - then, strangely, with furrowed brows . . .

Rose has appeared unaffected by this extraordinary incident – except, perhaps, for certain moments when her mind has seemed to drift . . . to somewhere else.

For Mr and Mrs Morland now feel dutybound to tell Simon, their jovial future son-in-law, about a mysterious incident in their daughter’s past about which they have never spoken . . . not even to Mary Rose herself. When she was a young girl, Mary Rose and her parents holidayed on a tiny island in the Outer Hebrides. And, one day, Mary Rose disappeared. Without trace. Until three weeks later, that is, when she suddenly reappeared, wholly unaware that any time had passed. Since then, Mary

Four years after her marriage, Mary Rose returns to the same island with her husband and their young son. And something unthinkable happens. Again . . . J.M. Barrie’s eerie supernatural drama of youth, love and loss, written in the aftermath of the Great War, was first staged in 1920 – and a young Alfred Hitchcock was one of the many who fell under its spell. So if you enjoyed our recent productions of The Admirable Crichton and Dear Brutus, then this mysterious, deeply moving play, which featured in PFT’s first ever Season in 1951, is not to be missed!

“Genuinely spine-tingling” The Herald

“Deft, thoughtful and heartfelt . . . a real heart-lurching chiller.” The Scotsman

“Barrie revival is a class act . . . the kind of large scale production at which director Richard Baron excels” The Times on PFT’s production of The Admirable Crichton, 2014

Time Out

With a bath on the billiard table and a garden resembling a jungle, aristocrat (and former model) Dorothy Stacpoole faces a desperate situation. The decaying family pile is close to ruin. And with the coffers all but empty, Dorothy must now choose between auctioning off the historic contents - or handing everything over to the National Trust.

Whilst pondering which way to jump, Dorothy unexpectedly encounters a familiar face from her modelling days. Theodore, now a producer of “adult” films, is in search of the perfect period setting - and four poster bed - for his latest porn epic. And having a film crew about the place might distract Dorothy from the impossible decision she faces . . .

Archdeacon June, her sister, is all for the Trust. But Dorothy loathes the idea of opening her home to the public: people spoil things, don’t they, trampling over history, gawking at family memories? The thought of flogging off the art and the heirlooms is equally unbearable. And there’s a third option, too: a shady, überrich consortium is interested in buying the house and relocating it from Yorkshire to somewhere altogether more desirable. Like Dorset.

Bennett’s hilariously entertaining and strangely moving play about heritage and home opened at the National Theatre in London in 2012. Sharing the same theatrical DNA as PFT’s acclaimed production of The Lady In The Van, the Scottish première of People will be eagerly awaited by Bennett fans everywhere!

Absurd Person Singular by Alan Ayckbourn

“I don’t know what it is about Christmas but – I just find myself remembering all the dreadful things – the dreadful things I’ve said – the dreadful things I’ve done . . .” Three ill-matched couples. Three different kitchens. Three horrendous Christmases . . . Early 1970s suburbia: the ambitious Sydney Hopcroft is hoping to secure backing for his new business from two guests he’s invited to his festive gathering: architect Geoffrey Jackson and old-school banker Ronald Brewster-Wright. But the pressure of the situation proves a little too much for Sydney’s put-upon wife, Jane, as she attempts to keep the party sailing along upon a sea of gin and shiny formica worktops . . . One year later, and it’s the turn of serial philanderer Geoffrey and his clinically depressed wife, Eva, to play host. Before their guests arrive, Geoffrey decides the time is right to tell Eva that their marriage is over. Already befuddled with pills, Eva

believes there’s only one way out - but why can’t any of the merry visitors see what she’s really trying to do? A further year passes and it’s Christmas chez Ronald and his caustic, hard-drinking wife, Marion. Ronald’s bank is in trouble, so there’s not much Christmas cheer. And Marion’s locked herself in the bedroom with the booze. And Geoffrey’s career has taken a nosedive. So when the Hopcrofts drop in, Sydney suddenly finds himself in a position to dominate proceedings . . . An hilarious, wickedly observant comic masterpiece about ladder-climbing (social and otherwise) and power, Absurd Person Singular is one of the greatest plays of the last fifty years, by one of Britain’s - and PFT’s - most popular playwrights.

“Dramatic mastery at work” The Guardian

“Ayckbourn at the top of his game . . . it feels almost indecent to laugh but somehow you just can’t stop yourself” The Telegraph

The Ruling Class by Peter Barnes CLAIRE:

“How do you know you’re . . . God?” EARL OF GURNEY:

“Simple. When I pray to Him I find I’m talking to myself.” The aristocracy: backbone of Britain, pillar of Church and State, the living embodiment of tradition. And purveyors of certain eccentricities. Some stranger than others . . . When the 13th Earl of Gurney dies in somewhat embarrassing circumstances, the title is inherited by his son, Jack – to the horror of the rest of the family. Why? Well, Jack’s particular eccentricity is a little more extreme than most: he’s a paranoid schizophrenic who thinks he’s the Father, Son and Holy Ghost . . . Returning home from a clinic to assume the title - and to preach an alarmingly subversive brand of peace, love and understanding - Jack is spectacularly unsuited to life in elite society. Appalled, the scheming Gurneys close ranks and deliver an ultimatum to Jack’s psychiatrist, Dr. Herder: Jack must either be cured

“Barnes’s play has an intoxicating energy . . . chillingly relevant” The Guardian

completely of his delusion – or quietly declared insane and committed to an asylum. But Herder’s attempts to shock Jack into normality are far from orthodox . . . and whilst the treatment may appear outwardly successful, deep within Jack’s psyche, something dark and deadly is released . . . One of the landmark plays of the 1960s, Peter Barnes’s classic cult comedy, influenced by everything from music hall to Ealing comedy, is a theatrical tour de force, combining feverish energy, ferocious humour, razor-sharp satire and genuine horror. The 1972 film earned Peter O’Toole an Oscar nomination, whilst James McAvoy starred in the acclaimed 2015 London revival. Do not miss this! Please note that this play contains occasional strong language and some adult content

“fascinatingly, brilliantly weird” TimeOut

“riotously funny-peculiar assault on the English upper class” The Telegraph

“. . . a scorching and savage tragedy, yet its jokes are innumerable . . . uproariously funny . . .” Sunday Times

Europe by David Greig

“We’re not in some savage country on the other side of the world. Look around you, look at the architecture. Listen to the sounds from the street. You can smell the forest. We’re a long way from home but we’re still in Europe.” On the platform of a provincial railway station, in a border town somewhere in Europe, two refugees arrive: Sava and his daughter, Katia. They’ve been travelling forever. All they want to do is rest and find a place to begin again. But it won’t be here. Because the town is dying. The station itself is about to shut: trains from Vienna, Warsaw and Budapest hurtle along the tracks, but none will stop. Both stationmaster Fret and Adele, the porter, yearn to leave. But they, like the refugees, must just watch the trains flash by . . . The town’s lightbulb factory has closed. Switched off. Young locals, like Horse, Billy and Berlin, are unemployed. Their days are spent in bars, complaining, sharing angry fantasies, or prowling the streets, increasingly resentful of the refugees in their midst.

“A memorable storm of political drama, comment and warning, not to be ignored.” The Scotsman

Sponsored by The Kuenssburg Charitable Foundation

Meanwhile, the shadowy Morocco, an ‘entrepreneur’, makes a living slipping across the invisible border, buying and selling . . . anything. That’s where the profit is now. Tensions rise, threaten to explode. And at night, out in the forest, the wolves gather . . . So who will live and who will die? Who will find love when it is least expected? And who will manage to escape . . ? This startlingly contemporary work by Scotland’s greatest living playwright is a fierce and compassionate drama about shifting borders, changing identities and globalisation. Please note that this play contains frequent strong language

The Scotsman, The Herald and The Times on PFT’s 2015 production of Pyrenees by David Greig.

We provide a range of access services, so when you book your tickets, please let our Box Office know if you have any special requirements and they will do their best to advise and assist you. Here’s a little more information about some of the services we offer:

Theatre For All

PFT is committed to making its theatre programme and other activities available to as many different people as it can.

We are aware that, for a range of reasons, some individuals and groups may feel excluded from the activities at PFT that so many others currently enjoy: those who are lonely, isolated, or marginalised in some way, for example. In order to ensure that our ambition to provide “theatre for all” is no hollow boast, we want to do whatever we can to overcome any obstacles to inclusion, whether financial, social, cultural or geographic, and whether real or perceived. You, our audiences, can help us deliver these ambitions by identifying those who you think might benefit from becoming part of the larger PFT family and assisting us to reach out to them and welcome them

into the fold. So if you know of individuals or groups that might feel that PFT is “not for them”, for whatever reason, and who you think might enjoy the opportunity to participate in the positive, happy and supportive experience that is the hallmark of a visit to PFT, simply contact our Box Office staff, who will be happy to note your thoughts, ideas and suggestions.
