rom May to December, our six Summer Season productions, Autumn show and Winter musical will provide superb entertainment, featuring all the familiar PFT trademarks: fantastic costumes, beautifully realised sets (famously attracting rounds of applause by themselves!) and thrilling performances from our talented and versatile actors.

Scotland’s Most Welcoming Theatre 2015 & 2016

PFT’s Summer repertoire Season is a unique theatrical phenomenon, offering a different show every night of the week – two on matinée days! So in the words of our famous slogan, you can Stay Six Days and See Six (different) Plays. Or stay three days and see four. Or stay two nights and see three – the choice is yours! Our 2016 musicals Carousel and Scrooge! attracted huge numbers of visitors from throughout the UK and overseas. This year’s flagship Summer musical will be Cole Porter’s glamorous, romantic High Society: for those who remember our smash-hit production of Porter’s Kiss Me, Kate in 2010, we can promise an equally thrilling, memorable treat! The work of great Scottish playwrights past and present also features this Summer.

Set before and after the First World War, J.M. Barrie’s Mary Rose is a moving supernatural drama about innocence and the loss of youth, whilst Europe is a thought-provoking tale of shifting borders and globalisation by Scotland’s greatest living playwright, David Greig. Three outstanding modern comedies complete the Summer programme. Alan Bennett’s People, a rude and riotous exploration of the heritage industry, receives its Scottish première at PFT, so

only be Alan Ayckbourn’s comic masterpiece, Absurd Person Singular, a 1970s suburban sit-com peppered with horribly truthful, cringe-inducing observations about marriage and status.

HIGH SOCIETY

The classic musical comedy, full of romance, glamour and hit songs For the socialites of New England, it will be the Wedding of the Year: seven hundred guests, magnums of Veuve Clicquot and the beautiful, sophisticated Tracy Lord as the bride-to-be. And the groom? According to the invitations, that honour goes to self-made man, George Kittredge. And even if George is, well, not quite from the top drawer - and a little dull - his upright character perfectly matches Tracy’s reputation as a paragon of virtue.

playboy, C. K. Dexter Haven, also drops in unannounced. Their marriage may have ended tempestuously, but Dexter is still dangerously attractive . . . Add an estranged father, a confused mother, a meddling younger sister, an amorous uncle, a lovesick photographer, a not-so-hushed-up family scandal, mix well - and you have the makings of a very potent cocktail indeed . . !

But then on the eve of the nuptials, Mike Connor, a downat-heel reporter from one of New York’s scandal sheets, turns up to cover the wedding. And this rugged ‘man of the people’ is immediately smitten with the divine Miss Lord . . .

After our smash-hit production of Kiss Me, Kate in 2010, PFT returns to the genius of Cole Porter with a large cast, a fabulous swing band and some great songs (including True Love, Let’s Misbehave, Well, Did You Evah! and Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?) for the Scottish première of this witty, sparkling, high energy musical!

Mary Rose

A mysterious, poignant ghost story of youth, love and loss When the young Mary Rose climbs an apple tree and announces her plans to marry, the news is greeted by her doting parents first with unbridled joy - then, strangely, with furrowed brows . . .

For Mr and Mrs Morland now feel duty-bound to tell Simon, their jovial future son-in-law, about a mysterious incident in their daughter’s past about which they have never spoken . . . not even to Mary Rose herself. When she was a young girl, Mary Rose and her parents holidayed on a tiny island in the Outer Hebrides. And, one day, Mary Rose disappeared. Without trace. Until three weeks later, that is, when she suddenly reappeared, wholly unaware that any time had passed. Since then, Mary

Rose has appeared unaffected by this extraordinary incident – except, perhaps, for certain moments when her mind has seemed to drift . . . to somewhere else. Four years after her marriage, Mary Rose returns to the same island with her husband and their young son. And something unthinkable happens. Again . . . J.M. Barrie’s eerie supernatural drama of youth, love and loss, written in the aftermath of the Great War, was first staged in 1920 – and a young Alfred Hitchcock was one of the many who fell under its spell. So if you enjoyed our recent productions of The Admirable Crichton and Dear Brutus, then this mysterious, deeply moving play, which featured in PFT’s first ever Season in 1951, is not to be missed!

Racy, razor-sharp comedy about the heritage business With a bath on the billiard table and a garden resembling a jungle, aristocrat (and former model) Dorothy Stacpoole faces a desperate situation. The decaying family pile is close to ruin. And with the coffers all but empty, Dorothy must now choose between auctioning off the historic contents - or handing everything over to the National Trust.

Whilst pondering which way to jump, Dorothy unexpectedly encounters a familiar face from her modelling days. Theodore, now a producer of “adult” films, is in search of the perfect period setting - and four poster bed - for his latest porn epic. And having a film crew about the place might distract Dorothy from the impossible decision she faces . . .

Archdeacon June, her sister, is all for the Trust. But Dorothy loathes the idea of opening her home to the public: people spoil things, don’t they, trampling over history, gawking at family memories? The thought of flogging off the art and the heirlooms is equally unbearable. And there’s a third option, too: a shady, über-rich consortium is interested in buying the house and relocating it from Yorkshire to somewhere altogether more desirable. Like Dorset.

Bennett’s hilariously entertaining and strangely moving play about heritage and home opened at the National Theatre in London in 2012. Sharing the same theatrical DNA as PFT’s acclaimed production of The Lady In The Van, the Scottish première of People will be eagerly awaited by Bennett fans everywhere! Absurd Person Singular

Hilarious comic masterpiece about suburban social climbing Three ill-matched couples. Three different kitchens. Three horrendous Christmases . . . Early 1970s suburbia: the ambitious Sydney Hopcroft is hoping to secure backing for his new business from two guests he’s invited to his festive gathering: architect Geoffrey Jackson and old-school banker Ronald Brewster-Wright. But the pressure of the situation proves a little too much for Sydney’s put-upon wife, Jane, as she attempts to keep the party sailing along upon a sea of gin and shiny formica worktops . . . One year later, and it’s the turn of serial philanderer Geoffrey and his clinically depressed wife, Eva, to play host. Before their guests arrive, Geoffrey decides the time is right to tell Eva that their marriage is over. Already befuddled with pills,

Eva believes there’s only one way out - but why can’t any of the merry visitors see what she’s really trying to do? A further year passes and it’s Christmas chez Ronald and his caustic, hard-drinking wife, Marion. Ronald’s bank is in trouble, so there’s not much Christmas cheer. And Marion’s locked herself in the bedroom with the booze. And Geoffrey’s career has taken a nosedive. So when the Hopcrofts drop in, Sydney suddenly finds himself in a position to dominate proceedings . . . An hilarious, wickedly observant comic masterpiece about ladder-climbing (social and otherwise) and power, Absurd Person Singular is one of the greatest plays of the last fifty years, by one of Britain’s - and PFT’s - most popular playwrights.

“I don’t know what it is about Christmas but – I just find myself remembering all the dreadful things – the dreadful things I’ve said – the dreadful things I’ve done . . .” 01796 484626

The Ruling Class

A ferocious, outrageously funny assault on position and privilege The aristocracy: backbone of Britain, pillar of Church and State, the living embodiment of tradition. And purveyors of certain eccentricities. Some stranger than others . . . When the 13th Earl of Gurney dies in somewhat embarrassing circumstances, the title is inherited by his son, Jack – to the horror of the rest of the family. Why? Well, Jack’s particular eccentricity is a little more extreme than most: he’s a paranoid schizophrenic who thinks he’s the Father, Son and Holy Ghost . . . Returning home from a clinic to assume the title - and to preach an alarmingly subversive brand of peace, love and understanding - Jack is spectacularly unsuited to life in elite society. Appalled, the scheming Gurneys close ranks and deliver an ultimatum to Jack’s psychiatrist, Dr. Herder:

Jack must either be cured completely of his delusion – or quietly declared insane and committed to an asylum. But Herder’s attempts to shock Jack into normality are far from orthodox . . . and whilst the treatment may appear outwardly successful, deep within Jack’s psyche, something dark and deadly is released . . . One of the landmark plays of the 1960s, Peter Barnes’s classic cult comedy, influenced by everything from music hall to Ealing comedy, is a theatrical tour de force, combining feverish energy, ferocious humour, razor-sharp satire and genuine horror. The 1972 film earned Peter O’Toole an Oscar nomination, whilst James McAvoy starred in the acclaimed 2015 London revival. Do not miss this!

Europe

A passionate, poetic drama about a rapidly changing world On the platform of a provincial railway station, in a border town somewhere in Europe, two refugees arrive: Sava and his daughter, Katia. They’ve been travelling forever. All they want to do is rest and find a place to begin again. But it won’t be here. Because the town is dying. The station itself is about to shut: trains from Vienna, Warsaw and Budapest hurtle along the tracks, but none will stop. Both stationmaster Fret and Adele, the porter, yearn to leave. But they, like the refugees, must just watch the trains flash by . . .

streets, increasingly resentful of the refugees in their midst. Meanwhile, the shadowy Morocco, an ‘entrepreneur’, makes a living slipping across the invisible border, buying and selling . . . anything. That’s where the profit is now. Tensions rise, threaten to explode. And at night, out in the forest, the wolves gather . . . So who will live and who will die? Who will find love when it is least expected? And who will manage to escape . . ? This startlingly contemporary work by Scotland’s greatest living playwright is a fierce and compassionate drama about shifting borders, changing identities and globalisation.

Singin’ In The Rain

All-singing, all-dancing musical extravaganza, guaranteed to make you feel good this Winter! Stars of the silent screen, Don Lockwood and Lina Lamont, are the toast of Tinseltown, their romantic chemistry adored by movie-goers and studio bosses alike – even if, when not in front of the camera, neither is the other’s greatest fan. But the arrival of the revolutionary ‘talkies’ threatens to fatally undermine the duo’s partnership, not least because Lina’s speaking voice can start dogs howling half a mile away. So if Lockwood And Lamont are to remain the public’s idols, they will have to master this new technology. And that means something will have to be done about Lina’s voice . . . Believed by many to be the best movie musical ever made, Singin’ In The Rain is still

celebrated for its stunning song and dance routines and the magical on-screen relationship between its stars, Gene Kelly and Debbie Reynolds. Now adapted for the stage, this exuberant, funny, joyous and warm-hearted musical features all the songs from the classic 1952 MGM film, including Make ‘Em Laugh, Good Mornin’, You Were Meant For Me, You Are My Lucky Star, and of course, the immortal Singin’ In The Rain. Destined to be yet another unforgettable PFT winter musical, Singin’ In The Rain will send all the family home with a smile on their face, a song in their heart and a twinkle in their toes - whilst wondering just how we did that . . .

Backstage Tours

Our fascinating guided tours take you behind the scenes to reveal the secret spaces and unseen areas of this unique Festival Theatre. You’ll visit the Green Room, where our cast and crew relax and prepare to go on stage, see where and how our elaborate costumes are made, have a look at our huge scenery workshop, visit the docks where sets are stored – and, of course, set foot on the famous stage itself! 22 PitlochryFestivalTheatre.com

01796 484626

Along the way, you’ll discover lots of fascinating facts and learn how to tell your gravetrap from your swing technician! Tours run on most Wednesdays from 28 June until 11 October and are always popular, so booking in advance is advised although not essential. TIME: 11.00am PRICE: £5.00

These walking tours last one-and-a-half hours and will involve some stair climbing

STAY 6 DAYS, SEE 6 PLAYS

Secrets of the Stage

This hugely popular illustrated talk is once again led by our Community & Education Director, Drew Scott. It covers all aspects of PFT’s stage productions: from set design and auditions to the rehearsal and set building process, using set models, props and costumes from past PFT shows. You will also have the opportunity to have answered any questions you may have about our productions. Having spent several years as Stage Manager here at PFT, Drew is ideally placed to give a personal insight into life backstage. Included in the talk will be a sneaky peek at the production being “fitted up” on stage that day and a look at how PFT has changed since its early days in the tent, as well as our vision for the future. PRICE: £7.50 (Includes tea/coffee and a Danish pastry TIME: Most Fridays from 30 June to 13 October, 11.00am - 12.30pm and a Danish pastry)

Post Show Talks

Join PFT’s Artistic Director, John Durnin, as he offers a director’s insight into both the show you’ve just seen and PFT’s unique repertoire system. You will also get the chance to meet some of the cast from that afternoon’s show and have your questions answered. During this talk, you will also see the stage set being ‘turned around’ for the evening performance of a completely different play. We think that’s worth seeing for the ticket price alone!

PRICE: £3.00 TIME: Approximately 5 minutes after the matinée performance.

Our experienced tour guides provide insights into the plants, trees, wildlife, history, art and architecture contained in Explorers. Lasting around 1.5 hours, these tours are fun, fascinating and informative: you’ll never look at your garden plants in the same way again! APRIL-OCTOBER: Sundays, 11.30am

ADDITIONALLY, JUNE-SEPTEMBER: Wednesdays, 11.30am

PRICE: £5.00 (includes Garden entry) CONCESSIONS: £4.50

On display in the magnificent Douglas Pavilion, this exhibition features striking photographic images captured by Julia Corden, a modern day plant hunter, international botanical tour guide and Explorers Garden Manager.

Last Summer, Julia travelled to Colorado, Utah and Montana to study the flowers in the high altitude regions of the Rocky Mountains in the USA. Her photographic exhibition captures the wonderful diversity of both landscape and plant life – from up close images of the little Lewisia rediviva growing in baked soils, to sweeping views of beautiful high mountain meadows, full of brilliant flowers and huge skies.

The exhibition runs from 1st April to 29th October. Entrance is free with Explorers entry.

AUTUMN PRODUCTION Thursday 26 October - Sunday 12 November

After the unprecedented success of last year’s production of Para Handy, we have something very special lined up to follow in the wake of The Vital Spark. The details must remain a closely guarded secret for the moment, but if you’re a lover of classic Scots stories with a distinctly Highland flavour - save the dates!

Access And Inclusion As the winner of UK Theatre's Most Welcoming Theatre In Scotland award - for two years in a row! - PFT naturally prides itself on being a welcoming, accessible and inclusive organisation, one which tries to engage with as wide a cross section of communities as it can from across Perthshire, Tayside, Scotland and the UK. As regular visitors know all too well, one of the special things about making a visit to the Theatre in the Hills is that you never know in advance who you will meet when you're here! We provide a range of access services, so when you book your tickets, please let our Box Office know if you have any special requirements and they will do their best to advise and assist you. Here’s a little more information about some of the services we offer:

Access

Full level wheelchair access is provided throughout the theatre’s auditorium, foyer, café bar and restaurant, with two wheelchair-friendly WCs on the same level.

• A courtesy wheelchair can be booked in advance for those with limited mobility who prefer to use a wheelchair in the building. • Four dedicated spaces for wheelchair users (or those with mobility issues who may find steps difficult to use) are provided in the auditorium. 36 PitlochryFestivalTheatre.com

01796 484626

Parking for Blue Badge holders (8 spaces) is provided next to the main theatre entrance.

For hearing aid users, an induction loop is provided in the auditorium, whilst personal sound amplifiers can be booked in advance through the Box Office for those with impaired hearing. For those with severe visual impairments, we provide an audio description service which can be delivered at any performance, as long as Box Office is given prior notice. • With prior notification, we are also happy to arrange pre-performance touch tours of the stage, set, costumes and props, to allow those with little or no vision to learn more about the show they will shortly experience. • Guide dogs, hearing dogs and dogs for the disabled are very welcome at PFT, but we would be grateful if you could please advise Box Office in advance if you're bringing your dog. If you think there is more that we could do to improve our access services, or if you know of those who would welcome alternative services – large-print, audio or Braille brochures, for example, or BSL signed or captioned performances – do let us know. We're keen to hear your suggestions and our friendly Box Office team will be only too happy to pass on your recommendations.

Theatre For All

PFT is committed to making its theatre programme and other activities available to as many different people as it can.

We are aware that, for a range of reasons, some individuals and groups may feel excluded from the activities at PFT that so many others currently enjoy: those who are lonely, isolated, or marginalised in some way, for example. In order to ensure that our ambition to provide “theatre for all” is no hollow boast, we want to do whatever we can to overcome any obstacles to inclusion, whether financial, social, cultural or geographic, and whether real or perceived. You, our audiences, can help us deliver these ambitions by identifying those who you think might benefit from becoming part of the larger PFT family and assisting us to reach out to them and welcome them into the fold. So

if you know of individuals or groups that might feel that PFT is “not for them”, for whatever reason, and who you think might enjoy the opportunity to participate in the positive, happy and supportive experience that is the hallmark of a visit to PFT, simply contact our Box Office staff, who will be happy to note your thoughts, ideas and suggestions.
