Whatever the time of year, the Theatre in the Hills offers you the chance to get away from it all, and be entertained, enthralled and enlightened in the rural heart of Scotland. With just six weeks left of the 2016 Summer Season, there is still time to plan a trip (or return journey) to see one or more of this year’s fabulous productions. But don’t leave it too late . . ! Then we steam into Autumn with the charming (and very funny!) misadventures of Para Handy, complete with a rousing musical score performed by actormusicians.

u Music by Robert Pettigrew “The Congo doesn’t compare wi’ Scotland when it comes to insects. There’s places here that are just deplorable when it gets a wee bit warm – Tighnabruaich for instance” This autumn, set sail with the irrepressible captain of The Vital Spark and his ramshackle crew - mate Dougie, engineer Macphail and cabin-boy Sunny Jim - as they travel from a West Coast breakers’ yard to the sea lochs of the Highlands and Islands. Memorably adapted for television in the 1990s with Gregor Fisher and Rikki Fulton, Neil Munro’s marvellous, mischievous stories have never been out of print since they first appeared in the Glasgow Evening News in 1906.

Scrooge!
December
Book, music and lyrics by Leslie Bricusse This festive musical, based on Dickens’ much-loved A Christmas Carol, started life as the memorable 1970 film starring Albert Finney before transferring to the stage. The Scottish première production - featuring a large cast and live band, spectacular sets and costumes, and spooky special effects - promises to be one of the most memorable Christmas musicals ever staged at PFT! Christmas Eve, 1843: the cruel money-lender Ebenezer Scrooge is confronted by the ghost of his former
partner, Jacob Marley, who warns Scrooge that he faces damnation unless he mends his ways. Can Scrooge be redeemed? All will be decided by the three spirits who visit him in the course of the night . . . With a scintillating score by Leslie Bricusse, whose credits include Pickwick, Dr. Dolittle and Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory, the show features the wonderful Thank You Very Much, I Hate People and the classic Sing A Christmas Carol!

Add in some crime, well-kent TV presenters like, perhaps, Jonathan Dimbleby, national poets, a dash of local history, politics, maybe an overseas correspondent such as John Simpson, and music - and you have all you might expect from the favourite festival in the Scottish literary year. Noël & Gertie
Noël & Gertie is a love story told in words and song, with flair and wit, which charts the friendship from childhood until her death, aged only 54, between actress Gertrude Lawrence and Noël Coward. This show, devised by Sheridan Morley from Noël and Gertie’s diaries and letters, features songs, sketches and scenes from some of Coward’s best-loved works. Go behind the scenes, into dressing rooms, onto the stage, beneath the greasepaint, and into the hearts and minds – and souls – of these larger-than-life stars. This revival has earned glowing reviews, with Julian Forsyth as a ‘brilliant’ Coward, Helen Power as ‘a strong-voiced and nimble footed Gertie’, accompanied by Steven Edis as musical director and pianist. Beautifully set and immaculately executed, this delightful production pays tribute to two of the best-loved performers of the 20th century. Moishe’s Bagel
Alice In Wonderland
Moishe’s Bagel began in 2003, with a lucky accident that brought together an Edinburghbased Chilean tango singer and four likeminded musicians. A shared love of klezmer, jazz and latin music soon saw them onstage at Henry’s Cellar Bar in Edinburgh, with a few tunes - and a lot of enthusiasm . . !
Follow Alice and the White Rabbit as they enjoy a colourful, topsy-turvy adventure like no other, meeting a host of outlandish characters along the way including the troublesome twins, Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee, the notorious Queen of Hearts, the Cheshire Cat and the Mad Hatter!
Since then, the band has regularly toured the UK, Scotland, Ireland and the Czech Republic, notching up sell-out gigs at the Jazz Cafe, Sage Gateshead, St George’s Bristol, Edinburgh Queen’s Hall and many more.
Immersion Theatre returns to PFT after a highly successful performance of Rapunzel last year, bringing its trademark high energy performance to its most spectacularly bonkers show to date.
Along the way, they have managed to record four CDs, earning them a place in the Sunday Telegraph’s Top 10 World Music albums and a Songlines Top of the World title.
Don’t miss your chance to see a classic story brought to life and meet the characters after the show - why not come dressed up as your favourite?

SCDA Scottish Final Festival Of One Act Plays
Every year, the Scottish Community Drama Association runs a One Act Play competition, which draws entries from up to 200 clubs from all over Scotland, from Kirkwall to Kirkcudbright. This year’s Final will feature eight plays which have fought their way through a round robin competition - competing for the honour of performing on the stage of Pitlochry Festival Theatre. Three plays will be presented on both Thursday and Friday night, with two plays, plus the final prize-giving, taking place on Saturday night. At the end of each evening - postperformance - there will be a short adjudication of each play, offering an interesting insight into the mechanics of each play. Of course, ‘real’ adjudications take place in the Foyer and Bar afterwards . . !
The finalists will not be known until the end of March. However if recent Finals are anything to go by, you can rely on a mixture of drama and comedy presented with flair and enthusiasm and representing the very best of Scottish amateur drama. Pitlochry Festival Theatre is delighted to once again play host to this major event in conjunction with the SCDA, which has acted as the representative body for amateur theatre in Scotland since the 1920s. With the eventual winner representing Scotland in the British Festival in July, this is sure to be three superb evenings of entertainment, high drama and dramatic tension – good luck to everyone involved! Dates: Thurs 13 to Sat 15 April Tickets: £17.00 or all three nights £48.00 Venue: Main House Time: 7.00pm
