FAMILIAR FACE, NEW ROLE
John MacLean
New Jersey Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello brought an old friend back to the fold when he hired former Devil John MacLean to serve as the team’s head coach on June 17. MacLean was promoted to New Jersey following a one-year stint with the Lowell Devils of the American Hockey League. MacLean, who replaces the retired Jacques Lemaire, is the Devils’ all-time leading goal scorer with 347. Five of MacLean’s players — Martin Brodeur, Patrik Elias, Jay Pandolfo, Brian Rolston and Jamie Langenbrunner — were teammates of his.

WELCOME BACK
Nikolai Zherdev
Unable to land a National Hockey League contract in 2009-10, former New York Rangers and Columbus Blue Jackets forward Nikolai Zherdev returned to his native Russia and spent the season toiling for Atlant Moscow Oblast of the Kontinental Hockey League. Zherdev is back in the NHL this year after signing a oneyear deal with the Philadelphia Flyers on July 9. A three-time 20-goal scorer at the NHL level, Zherdev will be asked to step onto one of the Flyers’ top offensive lines to help replace the production lost when Simon Gagne and his 259 career goals were traded to Tampa Bay.
The New York Rangers tapped into the international free agent pool on May 26 when they signed 5-foot-9 Norwegian forward Mats Zuccarello Aasen to a contract. Last season, Zuccarello Aasen led the Swedish Elite league in scoring with 64 points (23G-41A) in 55 games with MoDo. Zuccarello Aasen, 23, began attracting attention from NHL scouts during the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver when he picked up three points (1G-2A) in four games for Team Norway. He also starred at the 2010 World Championships in Germany, tying for the team lead with three goals in six contests.

RON BURKLE Ron Burkle has now added a new arena — Pittsburgh’s CONSOL Energy Center — to his tremendous list of accomplishments in the business world. Burkle, widely recognized as one of the preeminent investors in retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 12th season as co-owner of the Penguins. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his role in negotiations for the new arena deal. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is co-chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League and the Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy. He has received numerous awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year and the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year award.
MARIO LEMIEUX Mario Lemieux will always be remembered for the magic he created on the ice, but one of the crowning achievements of his remarkable business career came this season — the opening of CONSOL Energy Center, home of the Penguins and Pittsburgh’s new multi-purpose entertainment venue. Even before the reality of CONSOL Energy Center, Lemieux and coowner Ron Burkle had turned the Penguins into a premier NHL franchise. The Penguins have been named No. 1 in Fan Relations by ESPN the Magazine, sold out a team-record 166 straight games, sold out every suite for three straight seasons and established records for local television ratings, merchandise sales and website hits. Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVPs trophies and two Conn Smythe Trophies as playoff MVP, in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $8 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org. Mario, his wife Nathalie and their four children live in Sewickley. For extended bios please visit pittsburghpenguins.com 10
DAVID MOREHOUSE Pittsburgh native David Morehouse was named CEO of the Penguins in September and leads the team into an exciting new era at CONSOL Energy Center. Morehouse had served as team president since 2007, overseeing ticket sales, marketing, corporate sales, communications and brand development, as well as representing the team in corporate relations and governmental affairs. Under his leadership the Penguins have become one of the top organizations in professional sports — ranked No. 1 in Fan Relations and No. 5 overall as a franchise among 122 pro teams in North America by ESPN The Magazine. As team president, Morehouse implemented a brand strategy that featured a new commitment to marketing, fan interaction and community outreach, as well as a targeted focus on the team’s young fan demographic. Morehouse grew up in the Beechview section on Pittsburgh. He attended the Community College of Allegheny County and Duquesne University, and received a master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. He and his wife, Vanessa, have three children and live in Bell Acres. For extended bios please visit pittsburghpenguins.com

RAY SHERO Ray Shero, 48, was named GM of the Pittsburgh Penguins on May 25, 2006. His fresh ideas and calm but firm management style helped transform the Penguins from a team that did not qualify for the playoffs in 2005-06 to one that reached the Stanley Cup Final in 2007-08 and won the Cup in 2008-09. One of his first acts as GM was to declare a goal of building a team that could compete for championships on a yearly basis. He revamped the team’s hockey operations staff and structure, upgraded professional and amateur scouting, added a team operations director and opened new lines of communication with the business side of the organization. Ray built his hockey sense and managerial style during 14 seasons as an NHL assistant general manager — six with the Ottawa Senators and eight with the Nashville Predators. Shero played college hockey at St. Lawrence University and was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in 1982. He spent seven years as a player agent before making the transition to the front office. The native of St. Paul, Minn. is actively involved with USA Hockey and is a member of the USA Hockey National Team Advisory Group. Ray and his wife, Karen, and their two sons reside in Upper St. Clair.
JASON BOTTERILL Jason Botterill enters his second full season as assistant general manager after being promoted to his current position on May 22, 2009 by general manager Ray Shero. As assistant GM, Botterill works closely with Shero on all hockeyrelated matters, including scouting, player development and contract negotiations. He also manages hockey operations and acts as GM for the club’s top-minor league affiliate, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League. Prior to his promotion, Botterill, 34, worked two seasons as director of hockey administration with the Penguins. Before joining Pittsburgh, Botterill worked with NHL Central Registry and also scouted for the Dallas Stars. Botterill was a first-round draft pick (20th overall) by Dallas in 1994 and played 88 NHL games over six seasons with Dallas, Atlanta, Calgary and Buffalo. A native of Edmonton who grew up in Winnipeg, Botterill played four seasons at the University of Michigan, where he earned his MBA, and helped lead the Wolverines to the NCAA title in 1996. He also played for Team Canada at the World Junior Championships in 1994, 1995 and 1996, helping his team win gold medals in all three tournaments. He resides in Pittsburgh along with his wife, Andrea. For extended bios please visit pittsburghpenguins.com 14

DAN BYLSMA In just one-plus seasons behind the bench, Dan Bylsma has already become one of the most successful coaches in Penguins’ history. After being promoted to Penguins head coach in February 2009, Bylsma, 40, directed the team to its third Stanley Cup in franchise history — a feat previously accomplished by legendary coaches “Badger” Bob Johnson and Scott Bowman. In the process Bylsma became the 14th rookie head coach, and just the fourth in the past 50 years, to capture the Stanley Cup. Of those 14, only Montreal’s Al MacNeil (1970-71) took over mid-season. Bylsma played nine NHL seasons as a right winger with Los Angeles and Anaheim from 1995-2004. He played 429 NHL regular-season games, recording 19 goals and 62 points, and also played in the 2003 Stanley Cup Final with Anaheim. Bylsma was an assistant coach at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton for two seasons from 2006-08 and was named head coach at the start of the 2008-09 season. He went 35-16-1-2 in 54 games with WB/S before being promoted to Pittsburgh. He played four seasons of college hockey at Bowling Green. Dan and his wife, Mary Beth, have one son and reside in the North Hills.
TONY GRANATO Tony Granato, 46, begins his second season on the Penguins’ coaching staff. Granato, among his many responsibilities, works with the Penguins’ forwards and penalty killing units. He oversaw the NHL’s ninth-ranked penalty killing group with an 84.1-percent success rate, and second best on the road at 85.3 percent. Prior to joining the Penguins, Granato spent six seasons behind the bench for the Colorado Avalanche and served two stints as Avalanche head coach from 2002-04 and 2008-09. Granato compiled a 215-104-17-16 record and led Colorado to a Northwest Division title in 2003. Granato played 13 seasons in the NHL with the NY Rangers, Los Angeles and San Jose. In 1997, he was the recipient of the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy for overcoming a near career-ending brain injury. In 773 career games, the feisty forward posted 248 goals, 492 points and 1,425 penalty minutes. He appeared in 79 career postseason games and helped lead Los Angeles to a Stanley Cup Final berth in 1993. Granato played four years at the University of Wisconsin and was inducted into the Badgers’ Hall of Fame in 2000. Granato also played for the U.S. National team in 1987-88 and represented his country in the 1988 Olympic Games in Calgary. Tony and his wife, Linda, are the parents of four children and reside in the South Hills. For extended bios please visit pittsburghpenguins.com 16

TODD REIRDEN Todd Reirden, 39, joined Pittsburgh’s coaching staff on July 31, 2010 after coaching with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins the previous two seasons. Reirden, an NHL defenseman for parts of five seasons, works closely with the team’s defensemen. Reirden, completed his first full season as WB/S head coach in 200910, leading a young and inexperienced team to an impressive 41-34-2-3 record, finishing third in the East Division, and a berth in the Calder Cup playoffs. Prior to joining the Penguins organization, Reirden spent one season as an assistant coach with the Bowling Green Falcons (CCHA) — his alma mater. He was a teammate of Bylsma’s during the 1990-91 and 1991-92 seasons at Bowling Green. Selected by New Jersey in the 12th round (242nd overall) of the 1990 NHL Enrty Draft, Reirden played professionally for 13 seasons, retiring after the 2006-07 campaign with Graz EC of the Austrian Hockey League. He appeared in 183 NHL games with Edmonton, St. Louis, Atlanta and Phoenix, recording 46 points (11+35) and 181 penalty minutes. Todd and his wife, Shelby, have one son.
GILLES MELOCHE Former NHL goaltender Gilles Meloche is in his fifth season as the Penguins’ full-time goaltending coach and 25th with the organization. Meloche has been instrumental in developing Marc-Andre Fleury into a Stanley Cup-winning netminder. Meloche served as a Penguins scout from 1989-2006 and also doubled as a goaltending coach/consultant during much of that time. He was also part of the staff when the Penguins won Stanley Cups in 1991 and 1992. A native of Montreal, Quebec, Meloche spent 18 seasons as an NHL goaltender with Chicago, California, Cleveland, Minnesota and Pittsburgh. He played the final three seasons of his career in Pittsburgh following a 1985 trade. Meloche appeared in 788 NHL games during his career, posting a record of 270-351-131 with a 3.64 goals-against average. In 45 career playoff games, he posted a 21-19 record and a 3.48 goals-against average. Gilles and his wife, Sophie, reside in Pittsburgh. His son, Eric, is a pro player who was a member of the Penguins organization from 2000-04.

OUR NEW HOME CONSOL Energy Center opened in August, 2010 as Pittsburgh’s new multi-purpose entertainment venue — home of the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins as well as other professional and collegiate sports, concerts, children’s shows, skating shows and more. It replaces the old Civic Arena/ Mellon Arena, which had operated since 1961 and was home of the Penguins from their inception in CONSOL Energy Center represents an exciting new era for 1967. It was the oldest arena in the the city, the region and the Pittsburgh Penguins. National Hockey League. “CONSOL Energy Center represents an exciting new era for the city, the region and the Pittsburgh Penguins,” said David Morehouse, CEO of the hockey team. “With open concourses, comfortable seating, cutting-edge technology, a state-of-the-art scoreboard and sound system, and an extensive array of food and beverage options, it is a spectacular symbol for the Pittsburgh of the 21st century.” CONSOL Energy Center was completed on time and under budget, thanks to the combined efforts of architectural firms Populous and Astorino; the owner’s representative, ICON; the construction company, PJ Dick/Hunt; and the excellent construction workers and skilled trade workers of Western Pennsylvania. The new arena seats 18,087 for hockey, 19,000 for basketball and almost 20,000 for concerts. It is a green building and is the first NHL arena to attain LEED Gold certification. Even before its doors had opened, CONSOL Energy Center landed commitments from shows that would have bypassed the old arena — the 2012 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament first and second rounds, the 2013 NCAA Frozen Four, and back-to-back concerts by music legend Paul McCartney. McCartney, who first played Pittsburgh with the Beatles in 1964 but hadn’t performed here since 1990, christened the new arena with a grand opening concert on August 18, 2010. In its first season of operation, CONSOL Energy Center also will be home to the Pittsburgh Power of the Arena Football League — bringing indoor football back to the city for the first time in almost 20 years. A funding plan for the new arena project was completed in March, 2007, thanks to the combined efforts of Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell, Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato and Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl, among others. The Sports & Exhibition Authority owns the building on behalf of the city and county, and the Penguins have the lease. The new arena is managed by SMG, with Jay Roberts serving as general manager.

GAME NOTES THE SERIES Tonight the Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers renew their rivalry as they open the 2010-11 NHL season in the first regular-season game at CONSOL Energy Center . The game, the first of six between the teams this season, features the last two teams to represent the Eastern Conference in the Stanley Cup Final . The Flyers lost in six games to Chicago last June . . . This marks the second time these teams have met in the first NHL game at a new arena . The Flyers beat Pittsburgh, 1-0, on Oct . 19, 1967 in the first game at the Spectrum in Philadelphia . Bill Sutherland’s goal at 2:59 of the third period was the game-winner, and Doug Favell made 17 saves in the first shutout ever against the Penguins . . . These teams met one year ago tomorrow in Philadelphia, a 5-4 Pittsburgh victory in which Evgeni Malkin and Alex Goligoski each had one goal and one assist . . . The Penguins won the series last season, 5-1-0 . Sidney Crosby had four goals and 10 points to lead all scorers in the series, while Malkin had two goals and eight points . Jeff Carter led the Flyers with six goals and eight points . Kris Letang led Pittsburgh with a plus-5, while Ian Laperriere and Kimmo Timonen were both minus-5 for Philadelphia . . . Carter has 14 goals and 28 points in 32 career games against Pittsburgh; Crosby has 24 goals — his most against one team — and 56 points in 32 career games against the Flyers while Malkin has 15 goals and 39 points in 26 career games against Philadelphia . . . The Last season Sidney Crosby had four goals and 10 points Penguins are 12-4-0 in their to lead all scorers in the series against Philadelphia . last 16 games against the Flyers . . . Pittsburgh has won the last six games between the teams to be decided after regulation, earning four of those wins in shootouts and two in overtime . The Penguins have won more shootouts against Philadelphia than any other team . . . The last time the Flyers beat the Penguins after regulation was back on Oct . 14, 2005 in Philadelphia (6-5 OT), and the Flyers have not beaten the Penguins after regulation here in Pittsburgh in more than 24 years (April 5, 1986, 4-3 OT) . . . Philadelphia has scored first in eight of the last 10 meetings with Pittsburgh and 16 of the last 21 . . . The Penguins are 12-3-0 in their last 15 regular-season home games against Philadelphia . . . The teams’ next meeting is in continued on page 31

Philadelphia Oct . 16, and their next game here is Oct . 29 . . . Pittsburgh has played more regular-season games against the Flyers (248) than against any other team . The Penguins are 85-129-30-4 in the series .
THE PENGUINS CONSOL Energy Center becomes the third building in Pittsburgh to host an NHL game . The New York Americans beat the Pittsburgh Pirates, 2-1, on defenseman Charlie Langlois’ overtime goal at 3:10 at Duquesne Gardens on Dec . 2, 1925 in the first NHL game ever played in Pittsburgh . The first home goal was scored that night by Pirates’ star Lionel Conacher at 9:15 of the second period . . . The Penguins lost the first NHL game ever played at the Civic Arena on Oct . 11, 1967 by the same 2-1 score against Montreal, with star forward Andy Bathgate scoring the team’s first goal at 7:06 of the third period . . . The first pro hockey game at the Civic Arena was the Buffalo Bisons’ victory over the AHL Pittsburgh Hornets on Oct . 14, 1961 by the score of — you guessed it — 2-1 . Rookie defenseman Paul Jackson scored the first Hornets’ goal in the building at 5:58 of the third period . . . The collective record of the NHL’s other 29 teams in their first game at their current arenas is 10-15-4 . The collective record of the last seven NHL teams in their home opener in a new arena is 1-4-2, with only Dallas (2001) winning . . . This marks the seventh time the Penguins have been involved in the first regular-season NHL game at an arena and the first time in North America since they beat Carolina, 4-3, at Greensboro Coliseum on Oct . 3, 1997 . . . CONSOL Energy Center is the 67th different arena to host a Penguins’ regular-season game . . . Pittsburgh is 18-18-6 all-time in season openers and 22-13-7 in

home openers . The Penguins have won three of their last four season openers and three of their last four home openers . . . Among the new faces hoping to be in the lineup tonight for Pittsburgh were Paul Martin, Zbynek Michalek and former Flyers Arron Asham and Mike Comrie . Comrie’s last goal in a Flyers’ uniform came against the Penguins on Jan . 12, 2004 . . . Jordan Staal, out with a post-surgery infection after his foot tendon was cut last spring, has his consecutive game streak snapped at 302 tonight — second only to Ron Schock’s 313 .
Former Penguins’ forward Bill Guerin was in the Flyers’ training camp on a tryout basis and was hoping to earn a spot on the opening night roster . . . Among other new faces for Philadelphia in training camp were Sean O’Donnell, Jody Shelley, Andrej Meszaros, Matt Walker and Nikolai Zherdev . . . Chris Pronger was uncertain to start the season on time after off-season knee surgery . . . The Flyers play in St . Louis on Saturday and then return home for a five-game homestand . . . This is the 10th time the Flyers have been involved in the first NHL game at an arena and the first time since tying Minnesota at Xcel Energy Center on Oct . 11, 2000 (3-3) .

COMMUNITY UPDATE IT’S A GREAT DAY TO GIVE BLOOD! On September 20, the Pittsburgh Penguins joined forces with the Central Blood Bank to hold their annual Score One for Life blood drive. More than 240 registered donors showed up at the Verizon Gate of the CONSOL Energy Center to donate their blood and support the Penguins. From start to finish, the blood drive was rewarding and fun for everyone. Participants waiting their turn to donate were entertained by the Penguins’ mascot, Iceburgh, who gave out hugs, took pictures with fans, and danced for the crowd. All donors received a commemorative t-shirt and a chance to win Penguins memorabilia, but those who registered between 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM were able to preview what’s to come for the 2010-11 season. Those lucky donors had the opportunity to watch the Penguins in action during one of their team practices. The Pittsburgh Penguins and the Central Blood Bank have collaborated in saving lives for the past 18 years. The Score One for Life blood drive is always scheduled at the end of summer when low donation rates create a critical shortage of blood by September. This year’s blood drive collected 290 units of blood which will help a total of 870 patients.

CONSOL ENERGY CENTER HAS SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE In November 1998, the future of the Pittsburgh Penguins was in jeopardy. The team had just filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and relocation rumors were spreading like wildfire. Fast forward to October 2010, and not only are the Penguins alive and thriving in Pittsburgh, tonight they officially christen the spectacular CONSOL Energy Center to replace the outdated Civic Arena. The 12 years in between were tumultuous and uncertain at times, but thanks to Ron Burkle, Mario Lemieux, Ken Sawyer, David Morehouse and Ray Shero, the Penguins have been rebuilt On March 13, 2007, Lemieux announced to an ecstactic crowd, that a new home into a winning team. would be built for the Penguins. On March 13, 2007, Lemieux stood at the Civic Arena zamboni entrance to announce that a new home would be built for the Penguins. Crews broke ground for the new arena in August 2008. Now tonight, just two short years later, CONSOL Energy Center hosts its first-ever regular season hockey game as the Penguins host the Philadelphia Flyers. This will be the first time the Penguins have played a regular season home game in any building other than Tonight the Pittsburgh Penguins host the the Igloo. Philadelphia Flyers in the first-ever regular season “We’ve been seeing the place being hockey game at CONSOL Energy Center. built for the past couple of years and it’s great for us to finally be in it,” Pascal Dupuis said. “It’s top of the line on everything.” The players and fans alike have been raving about the new digs for several months, and once CONSOL Energy Center started hosting concerts and practices, the praises only grew louder. continued on page 47

The crowd during the first game against Detroit was loud even before the puck dropped giving the Penguins a taste of the energy that will live inside of the CONSOL Energy Center.
“It’s an unbelievable place,” Matt Cooke said. “It’s fantastic,” Brent Johnson said. “I think they did a great job.” The team has been in the arena for a few weeks now, but head coach Dan Bylsma is looking forward to seeing the building full and the energy and excitement when the puck drops tonight. “To get that feeling for what it’s going to be like with the fans in here, jumping and playing a game here is something that we all anticipate,” he said. The Penguins got a taste of that energy in the preseason. The first game against Detroit was loud even before the puck dropped, but three first-period goals and a fight cranked the decibel reading to deafening levels. “It was pretty loud during the [Jesse] Boulerice fight and during different points throughout the night,” captain Sidney Crosby said. “It definitely had a nice feel to it.” Ryan Craig, who scored two goals in the arena’s first-ever game, said he was impressed with the crowd. “That’s an unbelievable crowd for preseason,” he said. “The building’s full and 20 seconds in they’re chanting ‘Let’s go Pens!’” But even though the preseason was raucous, Bylsma said he expects the regular season to be even better. continued on page 48

“I still don’t think we’ll get the full effect until the regular season,” he said. The arena’s open concourses, 800 televisions, breathtaking views and perfect sight lines are all amenities that make CONSOL Energy Center great for the fans, but from the players’ point of view, the locker room is the cum de laude of the building. “It’s a little bigger than we’re used to, but I’ll get used to it,” Crosby said. “It’s a pretty amazing room and they’ve done a great job. It’s going to be a lot of fun to be here.” The players can thank equipment manager Dana Heinze and head athletic trainer Chris Stewart for the design of the locker room. The oval shape makes it so there are no corners and everyone is together. The ceiling is tiled to resemble the roof of the Igloo, and there are even murals along the top of the wall honoring members of the Penguins Trib Total Media All-Time Team. “There are a lot of details and even just having some of the alumni up here, I think that’s a nice touch,” Crosby The Penguins locker room is shaped like an oval, said. “For a brand so there are no corners and everyone is together. new building, it feels pretty homey right away.” The locker room may feel like home to the players, but the team is still getting used to the particulars of the ice, and Bylsma said that he is excited to create a home-ice advantage here. “As far as the rink and the details of the rink and some of the bounces, I think I see something new every day,” he said. The boards behind the net seem to be a little livelier than the boards at the Civic Arena, but the Penguins are adjusting to take advantage of it. “It’s pretty lively, and the corners are a little shallower, so the puck comes around the boards a little faster,” Bylsma said. “We’ll experiment with shooting off the end boards and using that as part of our strategy on the power play.” The Penguins will look to use that home-ice advantage for the first time tonight, and when the puck drops it will signal the beginning of a new era. While the Igloo will certainly be missed, the Penguins welcome the change. “As much nostalgia and integrity that [the Civic Arena] had, it realistically didn’t meet the standards of the new NHL,” Cooke said. “I think anybody that played there appreciates that building and understands what the history is with that building, but it’s time to move on. “And this facility makes it very easy to come to work every day.”

I feel
.
Ask a grieving child how they’re feeling and you may get a lot of answers. Or none at all. For many, finding the words to express their feelings can be difficult. But while finding the right words may not be easy, finding the right place to turn to for help can be. At the Caring Place, we’re here when grieving children need someone to listen, to talk, or to just sit and be. For more information about one of our peer support groups or to volunteer, call us today.

THE PENGUINS GAME VAULT OCTOBER 5, 2006 • PENGUINS 4, FLYERS 0 MELLON ARENA • SEASON OPENER The additions of rookie centers Evgeni Malkin and Jordan Staal to a lineup which already featured 19-year-old superstar Sidney Crosby provided plenty of optimism for the Pittsburgh Penguins as the team prepared to open the 2006-07 season at Mellon Arena on Oct. 5, 2006 against the Philadelphia Flyers. Although Malkin missed the game as a result of a preseason shoulder injury, Crosby, Staal and goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury gave Penguins fans a glimpse of what was to come in the coming months by leading the way to a 4-0 victory over the rival Flyers. Crosby — who went on to win the scoring title in 2006-07 — shot out of the gate with a goal and an assist, Fleury stopped all 40 shots the Flyers threw his way to pick up his second career shutout Marc-Andre Fleury stopped all 40 shots the and Staal led the way for a penalty killing Flyers threw his way on October 5, 2006, to unit which killed off all 10 Flyers’ power pick up his second career shutout. plays, including a pair of five-on-threes. Playing the first game of the general manager Ray Shero era, Pittsburgh scored twice in each of the first two periods. Michel Ouellet and Jarkko Ruutu tallied in the first period, while Crosby and Joe Melichar added second-period markers. Ouellet and Ruutu, whose goals staked the Penguins to a 2-0 lead by the midway point of the opening frame, finished with two points (1G-1A) each. Pittsburgh’s defensive corps, which had added Mark Eaton in the offseason to help provide more of a defensive, shutdown presence, held Flyers star Peter Forsberg scoreless in 16:39 minutes. Staal wasn’t the only Penguin making his NHL debut against the Flyers. Nineteen-yearold defenseman Kris Letang also saw his first NHL action. The Penguins’ victory, which came on the heels of a 22-win campaign the year before, set the tone not only for a remarkable regular season that would see the team complete the fourth-best turnaround (47 points) in National Hockey League history, but also for a year which saw the Penguins post a perfect 8-0 record against Philadelphia.

Second intermission of the first hockey game at CONSOL Energy Center, and I turned to a colleague and said, “This place may never feel normal.” As for this article — well, normal is not something Penguins fans should expect. This marks my fourth year as the lead Penguins reporter for Trib Total Media, which means I’ve spent the past three years following the team every day. That includes road trips to places from Sunrise, Fla., to Vancouver, British Columbia, with a bunch of stops through the Atlantic Division cities in between. My main job is to deliver all the news (big and small, good and bad) to Penguins fans, but often the best stories are the ones that aren’t fit for print. At least, not fit for print in a newspaper. The Penguins and I figure IceTime is the perfect publication for one reporter’s tales from the road. This one dates to Xcel Energy Center • Home of the Minnesota Wild three years ago. The Penguins were in St. Paul for a game against the Minnesota Wild. I was excited for every trip that season, my first traveling to cover an NHL team, but this particular city was of most interest. Most of my previous year had been spent helping cover the Penguins’ push for new arena funding, and during that time I’d heard many team officials speak of one NHL arena as being nearly perfect. The Xcel Energy Center was that building with its glowingly open concourses; madefor-hockey fans upper-level sightlines; lower-bowl intimacy; spacious dressing rooms; and — especially of interest to me — an elevator designated for the media and coaches. The official groundbreaking for CONSOL Energy Center was several months away, but I arrived early this day at Xcel Energy Center because I figured this arena was as close as I would get to a preview of what was to come to Pittsburgh. I was nearly late to the Wild’s practice because I kept walking around those open concourses with my eyes bugging out. The very concept confounded me to the point that I sought out former Penguins CEO Ken Sawyer to ask if the concourses Pittsburgh’s new arena would be like this one. “Well, we’re going to take a lot of the ideas we like, and this is one, and make them part of our arena,” he said.

QUALITY IS ALL WE THINK ABOUT. THAT AND QUALITY.
THINK ABOUT IT. First, we pioneered the 10-year/100,000-mile warranty. Then, we led the way with Hyundai Assurance. Now, the EPA has just named Hyundai the most fuel-efficient carmaker in America.* Sure, it’s another important milestone reached, but it’s also a reminder to stay focused on whatever lies ahead. had toured it enough to get comfortable with my surroundings. However, nothing is like a game night, and there was something happening away from the ice - Rob Rossi I had to see. About two minutes before the first period ended I left my media area — long gone are the days of my work space being called a “press box” — and headed to the elevator designated for media/coaches. I successfully pleaded for approval to snag a quick ride to Level 3, and by the time I set foot on the lower-bowl concourse floor the first intermission had started. I had time to take three full laps before heading upstairs. On my way to the elevator I noticed a young boy and his mom leaving their seats and headed to a concession stand. About four minutes remained before the second-period faceoff. “No chance,” I thought. “They’ll never make it for faceoff.” With a minute to spare mother and son walked away from that concession stand with a couple of drinks. This place may never feel normal, but CONSOL Energy Center is the arena Pittsburgh hockey fans deserve.

PAHL: GROWING THE GAME In a similar fashion to the Pittsburgh Penguins and the NHL, the beginning of fall marks the start of another Pittsburgh Amateur Hockey League (PAHL) season. Nearing its 30th year in operation, driven by dedicated volunteers, the PAHL is considered to be one of the premier amateur hockey organizations in the country. Many players who were trained in the PAHL have been selected to compete at the highest levels of amateur hockey. The USA National Team Development Program, the United States Hockey League, NCAA programs, and prestigious junior clubs all throughout Canada have discovered the PAHL pipeline. More than a few from that group [RJ Umberger, Ryan Malone, John Zeiler, Nate Guenin, and, Dylan Reese — of late] have managed to achieve their dreams of playing in the NHL. The individual achievements of PAHL alumni have made an indelible impression on current league administrators, coaches, and players. The league’s impact on the hockey landscape has not gone unnoticed by one of its most dedicated fans — the Pittsburgh Penguins. In years past, PAHL officials witnessed the positive correlation between growing the sport at the amateur level and the triumphs of the local NHL franchise. Conversely, the Penguins can argue that their success is a by-product of an avid fan base — a significant portion of which play youth or amateur hockey throughout Western Pennsylvania. For this reason, the relationship between the PAHL and the Penguins continues to make strides. Most recently, five-thousand tickets were donated to the PAHL as part of the Ultimate Home Game event hosted by ImaginePittsburgh.com and the Pittsburgh Penguins. Several area youth hockey associations had the opportunity to watch the Penguins defeat the Columbus Blue Jackets in preseason play on September 25th at the CONSOL Energy Center. Given the Pittsburgh Amateur Hockey League track record and the sheer volume of youth hockey jerseys in the crowd, it should come as no surprise that future NHL stars were certainly in attendance that evening. 103

PENS PROFILE MIKE COMRIE
Mike Comrie has life beat. His family owns The Brick, one of Canada’s largest retail outlets. He’s married to Hilary Duff, the beautiful singer/ actress. He doesn’t have many worries. But Comrie would like to win a Stanley Cup. So, just 20 days after entering holy matrimony, the 30-year-old Edmonton native forged another promising union, signing a one-year deal with the Penguins. “We’re excited,” said Comrie, referring to his wedding and wife. “But it’s back to business, and on to Pittsburgh. I’m thrilled with the opportunity.” Opportunity is certainly thick for Comrie. His quickness and versatility make him a good match for either of the Penguins’ superstar forwards, Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. Comrie knows where the net is: He had 33 goals for Edmonton in 2001-02, 30 for Phoenix in 2005-06. Mononucleosis limited Comrie to just 43 games in Edmonton last season. He

“I’ve never played with anyone like those guys,” Comrie said of Crosby and Malkin. “Watching how they use linemates, and their defensemen — the play never dies with them. “You just try to keep up with them. They think of the game at an elite level. If you’re on the ice with either one of those guys, you have to think the game as high as you can. Try to get open and make plays. Read off each other and react.” When Comrie joined the Penguins, it was debated whether he’d play wing or center. But if Comrie has a preference, he’s not telling. “Early in my career I played mostly center,” said the 5-foot-10, 185-pounder. “The last couple of years, I’ve played wing. But the first guy back plays low. Everybody makes plays, not just the center. “With the skill this team has, if you get your stick open around the net, you’re going to find a lot of pucks. Position doesn’t matter. The less stagnant you are, the more success you’ll have.” Comrie spent a lot of time centering Malkin during pre-season. The combination worked well, with Comrie’s wheels opening space for Malkin. “[Malkin] is a tremendous player,” Comrie said after the Penguins’ first exhibition, a 5-1 win over Detroit Sept. 22 at CONSOL Energy Center. “We were pretty close tonight. We set each other up a few times. If you make plays, he’ll convert.” Comrie netted the first goal that evening, making him the first player to score in a competitive hockey game at the Penguins’ luxurious new rink.

Mike Comrie netted the first goal in CONSOL Energy Center history on September 22 against the Detroit Red Wings.
But Comrie didn’t get the puck. “I’m not sure where it is,” he added, laughing. “It was a play coming through the middle. I got a shot on net, then a rebound in the air, then another rebound in the air. It was nice, but I’m not sure if it will be on the back of a Trivial Pursuit card someday.” Comrie knows Crosby and Malkin will pile up points. He also knows contributions from players like him are often the difference between winning and losing. “We know Sid and Geno are going to get their goals and make plays,” Comrie said. “If everyone else chips in, it will be a step in the right direction.” Comrie is likeable, quick to crack wise. When Malkin was discussed, he joked about speaking a little Russian (Comrie doesn’t). When The Brick came up, he glibly mentioned the chain’s web site. Turns out over 30,000 sofas are priced to move. But Comrie’s reasons for signing with the Penguins are quite serious. “You don’t make a decision like I made for money,” Comrie said. “I made it for love of the game, and to try to win the Stanley Cup.” Sounds like a decent movie script. Comrie’s wife could play herself.

On January 1, 2008, in a game for the ages at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Orchard Park, NY, the Penguins and Sabres took to the great outdoors … and the NHL Winter Classic was born. A National Hockey League attendance record setting crowd of 71,217 witnessed as the Penguins prevailed, 2-1. Sidney Crosby’s shootout-winner amid the snowfall turned the final page on the game’s storybook ending. The success of the 2008 NHL Winter Classic led to it becoming an annual event played on New Year’s Day in a different NHL city. Here’s a summary of the matchups and locations for each game.

NEW SEASON, NEW MINDSET FOR PENGUINS, BYLSMA
The motivation to make amends after last year’s fall to the Canadiens should be a driving force for this year’s team throughout this season.
The Sidney Crosby-era Penguins finally took a step backward last season, which should inspire them to re-establish their championship pedigree this season. In the event it doesn’t, head coach Dan Bylsma has an alternative form of motivation in mind. “What do they call them, ‘Herbies’?” Bylsma wondered out loud on the eve of training camp. If it comes to that, Penguins players may indeed become reacquainted with one of hockey’s long-standing drills designed to inflict a little attitude adjustment, “Herbies” require players to skate from the goal line to the blueline and back, from the goal line to the center red line and back, from the goal line to the far blueline and back, and finally from the goal line to the other goal line and back. They’ve been known to get a team’s attention. A steady diet of ‘Herbies,’ however, ought not to be necessary given the Penguins’ recent progression. continued on page 141

THIS SEASON’S “MINDSET” AND “APPROACH” WILL DEMAND A LITTLE MORE FROM THE PLAYERS A LITTLE MORE OFTEN AND A LITTLE SOONER. 140
continued from page 139
CONSIDER: J In 2005-06 they added Sidney Crosby, a development that had everyone anticipating much better days ahead despite a 22-46-14 record. J In 2006-07 they made the playoffs and lost to an Ottawa team that was destined to reach the Stanley Cup Final. J In 2007-08 they won three consecutive postseason rounds before ultimately succumbing to the NHL’s modern-day dynasty, the Detroit Red Wings. J In 2008-09 they captured the Stanley Cup. But last season ended with a second-round exit at the hands of the Montreal Canadiens, an outcome which marked the first time in five Crosby campaigns that the Penguins did less rather than more than most everyone was expecting. As tough as that was to take, the motivation to make amends should be a driving force for this year’s team throughout this season. At least that’s the theory. “I think that’s a good theory,” Bylsma said. “I absolutely agree. There has been a steady dose of improvement and successes and feeling good about what we’ve done or where we’re going. “Certainly last year, the exiting of the playoffs, losing in Game Seven is a fairly healthy dose of cough medicine. It doesn’t seem to be less fresh, that disappointment, and a little bit of the sting of not meeting expectations.” To avoid a repeat, and in an effort to exceed what will be expected of this year’s Penguins and what they’ll demand from themselves, Bylsma opened training camp “shooting for a different mindset and a different approach.” He did so understanding all along that the idea last season was to attempt to gradually establish peak efficiency and peak performance, given the demands of the previous two seasons and the subsequent trust his players had earned. This season’s “mindset” and “approach” will demand a little more from the players a little more often and a little sooner because of the way the Canadiens series came to a stunning, sudden halt in Game Seven last May. “We played the way we wanted to play,” Bylsma said. “But at the end I’m not sure we built up enough credit to win in that series throughout the year and going into the playoffs, building those habits, building that championship execution, those championship habits in your team. We played well enough to win that series and I’d play it over again the same way and make the same decisions, but you don’t win a championship starting on April 15. “You win it before that, you build before that and that’s something we’ll be doing.” It’s not as if the new season will reveal a reinvention of the wheel in terms of how the Penguins practice, prepare and perform. But the gas pedal is going to be stepped upon a little more often. And the Penguins are going to floor it a little sooner than they did a year ago. “Things won’t be dramatically different,” Bylsma insisted. “There won’t be a different continued on page 143

Dan Bylsma. There won’t be a different approach from our staff. But I think there will be a few details that are noticeably different from [the players’] standpoint.” If not, a series of ‘Herbies’ might be required to extract the required focus and fortitude. Bylsma doesn’t anticipate having to resort to such a drastic tactic while guiding a team he expects will individually and collectively find last season’s regression of a Cup defense unacceptable. But he’s reserving the right to get the Penguins climbing again, contending again and celebrating again by any means necessary.
