WILD ADD ‘HART’ The Minnesota Wild have always had a solid goaltending tandem between the pipes throughout the team’s short existence, but their depth behind starter Niklas Backstrom appeared as if it was going to be tested this season when backup Josh Harding went down with a serious knee injury during the preseason. Wild general manager Chuck Fletcher, who helped the Penguins win the Stanley Cup in 2009 as assistant GM, wasted Jose Theodore little time filling Harding’s void, signing former Washington Capitals netminder Jose Theodore to a one-year contract just days before the 2010-11 regular season. Theodore, who won the Hart Trophy with the Montreal Canadiens in 2001-02, posted a 62-24-12 record with Washington the past two seasons. Theodore enters this season on a 23-game regular-season unbeaten streak after finishing 2009-10 on a 20-0-3 run for the Capitals.
Led by emerging second-year performers John Tavares and Matt Moulson, the New York Islanders have plans on making a run at the franchise’s first playoff berth since 2005-06 this season. A pair of long-term injuries suffered during the preseason is going to make that tough on Scott Gordon’s squad. Defenseman Mark Streit, New York’s highest-scoring blueliner last season with 49 points (11G-38A) in 82 games, John Tavares will miss six months with a torn labrum and torn rotator cuff. As if Streit’s injury wasn’t bad enough, fellow alternate captain Kyle Okposo, the Islanders’ second-leading scorer in 2009-10, will be out until late December or early January with a shoulder injury of his own.

When the Penguins visit the Tampa Bay Lightning on Oct. 27, you might have to do a double-take if you want to find Upper St. Clair native and former Penguin Ryan Malone. That’s because Malone graciously gave up his No. 12 jersey this past offseason to newcomer Simon Gagne. Malone instead will sport No. 6 on his back. Gagne has promised to take Malone out for dinner on a road trip later this season as a thank you for his gesture.

RON BURKLE Ron Burkle has now added a new arena — Pittsburgh’s CONSOL Energy Center — to his tremendous list of accomplishments in the business world. Burkle, widely recognized as one of the preeminent investors in retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 12th season as co-owner of the Penguins. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his role in negotiations for the new arena deal. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is co-chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League and the Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy. He has received numerous awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year and the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year award.
MARIO LEMIEUX Mario Lemieux will always be remembered for the magic he created on the ice, but one of the crowning achievements of his remarkable business career came this season — the opening of CONSOL Energy Center, home of the Penguins and Pittsburgh’s new multi-purpose entertainment venue. Even before the reality of CONSOL Energy Center, Lemieux and coowner Ron Burkle had turned the Penguins into a premier NHL franchise. The Penguins have been named No. 1 in Fan Relations by ESPN the Magazine, sold out a team-record 166 straight games, sold out every suite for three straight seasons and established records for local television ratings, merchandise sales and website hits. Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVPs trophies and two Conn Smythe Trophies as playoff MVP, in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $8 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org. Mario, his wife Nathalie and their four children live in Sewickley. For extended bios please visit pittsburghpenguins.com 10
DAVID MOREHOUSE Pittsburgh native David Morehouse was named CEO of the Penguins in September and leads the team into an exciting new era at CONSOL Energy Center. Morehouse had served as team president since 2007, overseeing ticket sales, marketing, corporate sales, communications and brand development, as well as representing the team in corporate relations and governmental affairs. Under his leadership the Penguins have become one of the top organizations in professional sports — ranked No. 1 in Fan Relations and No. 5 overall as a franchise among 122 pro teams in North America by ESPN The Magazine. As team president, Morehouse implemented a brand strategy that featured a new commitment to marketing, fan interaction and community outreach, as well as a targeted focus on the team’s young fan demographic. Morehouse grew up in the Beechview section on Pittsburgh. He attended the Community College of Allegheny County and Duquesne University, and received a master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. He and his wife, Vanessa, have three children and live in Bell Acres. For extended bios please visit pittsburghpenguins.com

RAY SHERO Ray Shero, 48, was named GM of the Pittsburgh Penguins on May 25, 2006. His fresh ideas and calm but firm management style helped transform the Penguins from a team that did not qualify for the playoffs in 2005-06 to one that reached the Stanley Cup Final in 2007-08 and won the Cup in 2008-09. One of his first acts as GM was to declare a goal of building a team that could compete for championships on a yearly basis. He revamped the team’s hockey operations staff and structure, upgraded professional and amateur scouting, added a team operations director and opened new lines of communication with the business side of the organization. Ray built his hockey sense and managerial style during 14 seasons as an NHL assistant general manager — six with the Ottawa Senators and eight with the Nashville Predators. Shero played college hockey at St. Lawrence University and was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in 1982. He spent seven years as a player agent before making the transition to the front office. The native of St. Paul, Minn. is actively involved with USA Hockey and is a member of the USA Hockey National Team Advisory Group. Ray and his wife, Karen, and their two sons reside in Upper St. Clair.
JASON BOTTERILL Jason Botterill enters his second full season as assistant general manager after being promoted to his current position on May 22, 2009 by general manager Ray Shero. As assistant GM, Botterill works closely with Shero on all hockeyrelated matters, including scouting, player development and contract negotiations. He also manages hockey operations and acts as GM for the club’s top-minor league affiliate, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League. Prior to his promotion, Botterill, 34, worked two seasons as director of hockey administration with the Penguins. Before joining Pittsburgh, Botterill worked with NHL Central Registry and also scouted for the Dallas Stars. Botterill was a first-round draft pick (20th overall) by Dallas in 1994 and played 88 NHL games over six seasons with Dallas, Atlanta, Calgary and Buffalo. A native of Edmonton who grew up in Winnipeg, Botterill played four seasons at the University of Michigan, where he earned his MBA, and helped lead the Wolverines to the NCAA title in 1996. He also played for Team Canada at the World Junior Championships in 1994, 1995 and 1996, helping his team win gold medals in all three tournaments. He resides in Pittsburgh along with his wife, Andrea. For extended bios please visit pittsburghpenguins.com 14

DAN BYLSMA In just one-plus seasons behind the bench, Dan Bylsma has already become one of the most successful coaches in Penguins’ history. After being promoted to Penguins head coach in February 2009, Bylsma, 40, directed the team to its third Stanley Cup in franchise history — a feat previously accomplished by legendary coaches “Badger” Bob Johnson and Scott Bowman. In the process Bylsma became the 14th rookie head coach, and just the fourth in the past 50 years, to capture the Stanley Cup. Of those 14, only Montreal’s Al MacNeil (1970-71) took over mid-season. Bylsma played nine NHL seasons as a right winger with Los Angeles and Anaheim from 1995-2004. He played 429 NHL regular-season games, recording 19 goals and 62 points, and also played in the 2003 Stanley Cup Final with Anaheim. Bylsma was an assistant coach at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton for two seasons from 2006-08 and was named head coach at the start of the 2008-09 season. He went 35-16-1-2 in 54 games with WB/S before being promoted to Pittsburgh. He played four seasons of college hockey at Bowling Green. Dan and his wife, Mary Beth, have one son and reside in the North Hills.
TONY GRANATO Tony Granato, 46, begins his second season on the Penguins’ coaching staff. Granato, among his many responsibilities, works with the Penguins’ forwards and penalty killing units. He oversaw the NHL’s ninth-ranked penalty killing group with an 84.1-percent success rate, and second best on the road at 85.3 percent. Prior to joining the Penguins, Granato spent six seasons behind the bench for the Colorado Avalanche and served two stints as Avalanche head coach from 2002-04 and 2008-09. Granato compiled a 215-104-17-16 record and led Colorado to a Northwest Division title in 2003. Granato played 13 seasons in the NHL with the NY Rangers, Los Angeles and San Jose. In 1997, he was the recipient of the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy for overcoming a near career-ending brain injury. In 773 career games, the feisty forward posted 248 goals, 492 points and 1,425 penalty minutes. He appeared in 79 career postseason games and helped lead Los Angeles to a Stanley Cup Final berth in 1993. Granato played four years at the University of Wisconsin and was inducted into the Badgers’ Hall of Fame in 2000. Granato also played for the U.S. National team in 1987-88 and represented his country in the 1988 Olympic Games in Calgary. Tony and his wife, Linda, are the parents of four children and reside in the South Hills. For extended bios please visit pittsburghpenguins.com 16

TODD REIRDEN Todd Reirden, 39, joined Pittsburgh’s coaching staff on July 31, 2010 after coaching with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins the previous two seasons. Reirden, an NHL defenseman for parts of five seasons, works closely with the team’s defensemen. Reirden, completed his first full season as WB/S head coach in 200910, leading a young and inexperienced team to an impressive 41-34-2-3 record, finishing third in the East Division, and a berth in the Calder Cup playoffs. Prior to joining the Penguins organization, Reirden spent one season as an assistant coach with the Bowling Green Falcons (CCHA) — his alma mater. He was a teammate of Bylsma’s during the 1990-91 and 1991-92 seasons at Bowling Green. Selected by New Jersey in the 12th round (242nd overall) of the 1990 NHL Enrty Draft, Reirden played professionally for 13 seasons, retiring after the 2006-07 campaign with Graz EC of the Austrian Hockey League. He appeared in 183 NHL games with Edmonton, St. Louis, Atlanta and Phoenix, recording 46 points (11+35) and 181 penalty minutes. Todd and his wife, Shelby, have one son.
GILLES MELOCHE Former NHL goaltender Gilles Meloche is in his fifth season as the Penguins’ full-time goaltending coach and 25th with the organization. Meloche has been instrumental in developing Marc-Andre Fleury into a Stanley Cup-winning netminder. Meloche served as a Penguins scout from 1989-2006 and also doubled as a goaltending coach/consultant during much of that time. He was also part of the staff when the Penguins won Stanley Cups in 1991 and 1992. A native of Montreal, Quebec, Meloche spent 18 seasons as an NHL goaltender with Chicago, California, Cleveland, Minnesota and Pittsburgh. He played the final three seasons of his career in Pittsburgh following a 1985 trade. Meloche appeared in 788 NHL games during his career, posting a record of 270-351-131 with a 3.64 goals-against average. In 45 career playoff games, he posted a 21-19 record and a 3.48 goals-against average. Gilles and his wife, Sophie, reside in Pittsburgh. His son, Eric, is a pro player who was a member of the Penguins organization from 2000-04.

OUR NEW HOME CONSOL Energy Center opened in August, 2010 as Pittsburgh’s new multi-purpose entertainment venue — home of the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins as well as other professional and collegiate sports, concerts, children’s shows, skating shows and more. It replaces the old Civic Arena/ Mellon Arena, which had operated since 1961 and was home of the Penguins from their inception in CONSOL Energy Center represents an exciting new era for 1967. It was the oldest arena in the the city, the region and the Pittsburgh Penguins. National Hockey League. “CONSOL Energy Center represents an exciting new era for the city, the region and the Pittsburgh Penguins,” said David Morehouse, CEO of the hockey team. “With open concourses, comfortable seating, cutting-edge technology, a state-of-the-art scoreboard and sound system, and an extensive array of food and beverage options, it is a spectacular symbol for the Pittsburgh of the 21st century.” CONSOL Energy Center was completed on time and under budget, thanks to the combined efforts of architectural firms Populous and Astorino; the owner’s representative, ICON; the construction company, PJ Dick/Hunt; and the excellent construction workers and skilled trade workers of Western Pennsylvania. The new arena seats 18,087 for hockey, 19,000 for basketball and almost 20,000 for concerts. It is a green building and is the first NHL arena to attain LEED Gold certification. Even before its doors had opened, CONSOL Energy Center landed commitments from shows that would have bypassed the old arena — the 2012 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament first and second rounds, the 2013 NCAA Frozen Four, and back-to-back concerts by music legend Paul McCartney. McCartney, who first played Pittsburgh with the Beatles in 1964 but hadn’t performed here since 1990, christened the new arena with a grand opening concert on August 18, 2010. In its first season of operation, CONSOL Energy Center also will be home to the Pittsburgh Power of the Arena Football League — bringing indoor football back to the city for the first time in almost 20 years. A funding plan for the new arena project was completed in March, 2007, thanks to the combined efforts of Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell, Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato and Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl, among others. The Sports & Exhibition Authority owns the building on behalf of the city and county, and the Penguins have the lease. The new arena is managed by SMG, with Jay Roberts serving as general manager.

COMMUNITY UPDATE IT’S A GREAT DAY TO GIVE BLOOD! On September 20, the Pittsburgh Penguins joined forces with the Central Blood Bank to hold their annual Score One for Life blood drive. More than 240 registered donors showed up at the Verizon Gate of the CONSOL Energy Center to donate their blood and support the Penguins. From start to finish, the blood drive was rewarding and fun for everyone. Participants waiting their turn to donate were entertained by the Penguins’ mascot, Iceburgh, who gave out hugs, took pictures with fans, and danced for the crowd. All donors received a commemorative t-shirt and a chance to win Penguins memorabilia, but those who registered between 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM were able to preview what’s to come for the 2010-11 season. Those lucky donors had the opportunity to watch the Penguins in action during one of their team practices. The Pittsburgh Penguins and the Central Blood Bank have collaborated in saving lives for the past 18 years. The Score One for Life blood drive is always scheduled at the end of summer when low donation rates create a critical shortage of blood by September. This year’s blood drive collected 290 units of blood which will help a total of 870 patients.

The Penguins’ top minor-league affiliate in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton finished the 2009-10 regular season in a strong fashion. Over the course of the final 20 games, the Penguins earned points in 13 contests for a total of 87 points to snag a spot in the playoffs. This season, they hope to build off that success thanks to the help of some key offseason acquisitions. “I think everyone’s really excited about it,” goaltender Brad Thiessen said of the upcoming season. “I think we have a lot of older players coming in, some veteran guys who have won and put up some points in the league.” Forwards Ryan Craig, Brett Sterling and Geoff Walker and defensemen Andrew Hutchinson and Corey Potter signed with the Penguins during the free agency period. They will likely be key players in WB/S, along with returnees Dustin Jeffrey, Nick Johnson and Tim Wallace, who led the team in goals last year. “Some of those guys are fighting for a spot in the NHL, but some of them will be down there,” Thiessen said.
During the preseason Brett Sterling spent time in Pittsburgh playing on the top line with Sidney Crosby, registering a goal and an assist in three games.
The Penguins didn’t really need help scoring goals, as the team put 239 shots in the net last season. But Sterling’s scoring touch will certainly be welcomed. He led the American Hockey League with 55 goals in 2006-07 with the Atlanta Thrashers’ top minorleague affiliate in Chicago, and during the preseason he spent time in Pittsburgh playing continued on page 47

on the top line with Sidney Crosby, registering a goal and an assist in three games. “We added some top notch guys and we have some real depth,” Johnson said. Hutchinson and Potter will look to shore up the defense. Potter is a physical defenseman who notched 28 points (4G-24A) last season with the New York Rangers’ top minorleague affiliate in Hartford. Hutchinson is an offensiveminded defenseman and won the Eddie Shore Award for the 2007-08 season as the AHL’s best blueliner. Last year, he scored nine goals and 38 points to help the Texas Stars earn a berth in the Calder Cup Finals. Carl Sneep, a 2006 secondround (32nd overall) draft pick, will also join the team after spending four years at Boston College. Add to that the fact that guys like Brian Strait and Robert Bortuzzo have a year of experience under their belts, and the Penguins’ defense is looking formidable, something that puts Thiessen at ease as a netminder. “As a goalie, you definitely like to see veteran guys like the guys we picked up, Hutchinson and Potter,” Thiessen said. “It’s going to be a real experienced group and I’m looking forward to playing behind them.” Last season, Thiessen split time in both East Coast Hockey League

with the Wheeling Nailers and in WB/S throughout the early portion of the season. However, by the end of the season he had established himself as the Penguins’ No. 1 netminder. in the entire AHL. “The last couple of months of last year, I got a chance to play and a Carl Sneep, a 2006 second-round (32nd overall) draft pick, will also join WB/S after spending four years at Boston College.
chance to get into a little bit of a groove,” said
Thiessen, who will share the goaltending duties with John Curry. “So I want to continue that in the beginning of this year.” Thiessen is setting the bar high for himself this season. “I want to try to be the best goalie in the American Hockey League this year and push for more playing time to make sure I’m on my game, being consistent every night,” he said. In addition to the new players, the coaching staff also saw some changes. After Todd Reirden joined Pittsburgh as an assistant coach, the Penguins promoted John Hynes to head coach in WB/S. Alain Nasreddine, who spent five years as a player in the Penguins organization, will make his coaching debut as Hynes’ assistant. The players were excited about the new coaches. Johnson called Nasreddine “a great guy” and he is looking forward to getting the season started. “I think our goal is to play as consistent and play as well down the stretch and the whole year as we can,” he said. “I think we have a good chance to be up top in the playoff mix and fight for first in our division.” Thiessen also thinks the Penguins can vie for the top spot. “I think we can build off a lot of what we did at the end of last year,” he said. “So going into this year, we should be able to carry that on and try to shoot for first place in the division.”

I feel
.
Ask a grieving child how they’re feeling and you may get a lot of answers. Or none at all. For many, finding the words to express their feelings can be difficult. But while finding the right words may not be easy, finding the right place to turn to for help can be. At the Caring Place, we’re here when grieving children need someone to listen, to talk, or to just sit and be. For more information about one of our peer support groups or to volunteer, call us today.

THE PENGUINS GAME VAULT OCTOBER 14, 2000 • PENGUINS 8, RANGERS 6 MELLON ARENA Jaromir Jagr lit the lamp with frequent regularity during his 11 seasons with the Penguins. A 10-time 30-goal scorer while wearing the black-and-gold, Jagr was one of the most consistent goal-scoring threats during his heyday. As is the case with players of his pedigree, the threat was always there for Jagr to explode on any given night. And explode Jagr did on Oct. 14, 2000, when he recorded the only four-goal performance of his National Hockey League career in an 8-6 Penguins’ victory over the On Oct. 14, 2000 Jaromir Jagr recorded the only New York Rangers at Mellon Arena. four-goal performance of his National Hockey Playing the second half of back-to-back League career in an 8-6 Penguins’ victory over nights at the Igloo after opening the season in the New York Rangers at Mellon Arena. Nagano, Japan, Jagr gave the Penguins their first lead of the night at 14:11 of the first period when he beat Rangers netminder Kirk McLean for his second goal of the season to give the Penguins a 2-1 lead. New York struck twice within the first half of the second period on goals by Mike York and Theo Fleury to re-take a 3-2 lead, before Jagr picked his second tally of the evening to even the score on a power play at 13:53. The Rangers took their third lead of the seesaw affair just 1:29 later when future Hall of Famer Mark Messier notched his second goal of the game. However, from that point forward, it was pretty much all Pittsburgh — led by the scoring exploits of Jagr — until the Rangers tallied a couple of late goals. Robert Lang drew the Penguins even at 4-4 when he scored a power play marker with 53 seconds left to play in the middle frame, setting the stage for a scoring outburst by Pittsburgh in the first half of the third period. Jagr brought about a rain of hats when he gave the Penguins the lead for good just 53 seconds into the third period. The arena was still in a frenzy when Martin Straka increased that lead to 6-4 just 36 seconds later. Roman Simicek scored his first-career NHL goal at 6:06 and Jagr chased McLean from the nets when he picked up his historic fourth tally at the 9:15 mark to make it 8-4. Jean-Sebastien Aubin got the win in goal while Milan Kraft joined Simicek by scoring his first NHL goal in the first period. But the story of the night was Jagr, who scored four times en route to a league-leading 52 tallies during his final season in Pittsburgh.

ROSSI’S ROAD:
THE DAY A FLOWER HELPED ME FIND THE RIGHT QUESTION This September was like my previous three. The first week was fairly free and easy, and by the end of the second I was starting to feel it. Training camp loomed. I was ready to get back to work. So, too, were my bosses with Trib Total Media ready for me to get back to work — and days before the start of camp they wanted to meet with me and our hockey coverage team to discuss the three most dreaded words a hockey reporter can hear. Those words: Special Section Preview. Gulp. The start of each NHL regular season is usually met with a special section in the local paper. Sports department editors meet with reporters to generate ideas. Everybody leaves that meeting enthused. A day or so passes and deadlines are set for the reporters to deliver stories. A few more days pass and the reporters begin to realize those deadlines are fast approaching. At that point reporters start to panic, because nothing is done. I hit that point the Friday before the Penguins’ penultimate exhibition game at Chicago. The following Monday was the deadline day for several preview-section items assigned to me. It wasn’t that nothing was done, but rather that what wasn’t done was the special-section cover story. This was my baby. The idea was to craft four questions and ask them to the “Foundation Four” — Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Jordan Staal and Marc-Andre Fleury. Unfortunately for that idea, Staal is out indefinitely with a right-foot injury. Injured players don’t make for great interviews, so I adjusted and targeted the longest-tenured Penguin to replace Staal. More unfortunately for that idea, defenseman Brooks Orpik was at the time injured with a troubled groin. An off-day practice at Detroit was my final opportunity to speak with four players for this cover story, and my plan had changed. Interviews with continued on page 99

QUALITY IS ALL WE THINK ABOUT. THAT AND QUALITY.
THINK ABOUT IT. First, we pioneered the 10-year/100,000-mile warranty. Then, we led the way with Hyundai Assurance. Now, the EPA has just named Hyundai the most fuel-efficient carmaker in America.* Sure, it’s another important milestone reached, but it’s also a reminder to stay focused on whatever lies ahead. proposed new questions. Time was too short to shoot for perfection. I needed some questions, now. By the end of a 90-minute practice I had crafted four, the first of which I asked to Fleury as he sat at the very dressing-room stall where he hugged the Stanley Cup only 16 months prior. ME: What did you learn about yourself last season? He dipped his head, sighed, and pushed his hair back with his right hand upon looking up. “Seriously,” he said, half-smiling. “No, we can do better than Marc-Andre Fleury feels his best game last season was that question.” Round Two Game Five against Montreal. I tried to explain that we couldn’t; that I wasn’t feeling all that creative; that this was the one of my four questions with which I felt most comfortable. “I know you, Rob Rossi,” he said, “you can come up with something.” Something about the look in Fleury’s eyes — he genuinely seemed wounded a reporter he knew well would ask that question — made me reconsider taking a hard stance and demand he answer that question. I took a deep breath, flipped through my notebook, and found something I’d written down at the start of camp. This was something I’d wanted to ask him from the start. ME: What was your best game last season? Fleury smiled before talking about Game Five of the second-round playoff series

PENNSYLVANIA INTERSCHOLASTIC ROLLER HOCKEY LEAGUE PREVIEW Along with the rest of the hockey world, the end of September marks the beginning of a new season for the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Roller Hockey League (PIRHL). The smallest of the three official youth hockey leagues in western Pennsylvania, the PIRHL begins its 12th season this year and fields over 130 teams from 29 schools. The PIRHL is one of the fastest growing inline hockey leagues across the country. Its success in the national spotlight has garnered the attention of the roller hockey community. PIRHL varsity teams have won five out of the last six state championships, and have also captured two national titles — with Baldwin winning the Tier-III national championship in 2007 and Hampton JV winning its national title in 2008. Due to the recent success of the PIRHL, western Pennsylvania has become known as an up and coming hockey hotbed in the inline community and has been well represented at the international level. Since 2005, the PIRHL has had at least one member on the USA World Junior Team — its most recent product being Dylan Rohar from North Allegheny High School. “A lot of our success has to do with the structure we provide to the players,” PIRHL commissioner Tom Ward said. “I think it helps with the growth of the players as well as getting more teams involved in the sport. The more teams we have, the better talent we have.” One of the reasons the PIRHL has been so successful at developing top-tier talent is because they start at such a young age. At the start of the 2005 season, the PIRHL added an elementary division to its league. Since the elementary division began, the PIRHL has seen more youngsters come in with little to no prior hockey experience. “A lot of the kids have played in their driveways or in cul-de-sacs around their neighborhood, but most are first time players whose skills we can develop,” Ward said. With the addition of the newest division, the PIRHL can take kids as young as six and develop them through high school. This process, which lasts over a decade, is what makes the PIRHL one of the most elite inline hockey programs in the country. In addition to producing the best talent, Ward is perhaps most proud of the ability of the PIRHL to get kids out of the house and become more active. In part because of his efforts, Ward is proud to say that the PIRHL now provides an outlet for roller hockey for around 1,300 kids. “The Penguins are excited to see the growth of inline hockey in the region, thanks to the efforts of the PIRHL,” said Mark Shuttleworth, director of amateur hockey for the Pittsburgh Penguins. “Growing the game is important to us and we fully endorse the PIRHL and look for ways to support their efforts.”

ZBYNEK MICHALEK When you’re an accomplished shot-blocker like defenseman Zbynek Michalek, you live by a simple credo during exhibition season: GET OUT OF THE WAY. No sense risking injury when you’re just trying to knock off the rust. That’s one memo Michalek ignored, however. Zbynek Michalek absorbed six pucks en route to a 5-1 The 6-foot-2, Penguins victory over the Red Wings on Sept. 22. 210-pounder plied his trade to a shocking degree in the Penguins’ preseason opener vs. visiting Detroit on Sept. 22, absorbing six pucks en route to a 5-1 Penguins victory. “It’s just part of my game,” Michalek said after. “It just happens automatically. I try to play my game and if I block some shots, good. The main thing in a preseason game is to get my timing back. Get used to my new teammates and the new system and, most important, don’t get hurt.” Michalek. 27, is very durable: Despite eating tons of rubber, he played all 82 games of the NHL schedule three times in his last five seasons, all spent with Phoenix. Michalek missed 10 games last campaign, seven in 2007-08. Michalek led the NHL with 271 blocks in 2008-09. He had 156 last season. Why doesn’t Michalek get injured more? “I wish I could tell you,” Michalek said. “It must be luck. As many times as I get hit, I’ve only been hurt a few times. I get hit in good places, where I have extra padding. “You can never have enough padding. Even a soft shot can hurt you. Even a soft shot can break a bone. I’ve had my bumps and bruises. I feel it the next day.” Michalek is so much more than a mere shot-blocker. He’s considered one of the NHL’s premier defensive defensemen. NHL.Fanhouse.com labeled Michalek “the defenseman every team wants” going into free agency this past July 1. The Czech international wasn’t on the market very long before he signed a five-year deal with the Penguins. Michalek had three goals and 14 assists in 72 games last season as the Coyotes made the playoffs for the first time since 2001-02. They lost in the first round to Detroit. continued on page 117

“We had a good year in Phoenix. A lot of people started watching our team and watching me,” Michalek said. “It was good to be a free agent after a season like that. A lot of teams were interested, but I got a really good contract in Pittsburgh. I’m really happy to be here. “To have a chance to play for a team that’s going to play for a Stanley Cup every single season was so tempting. When Pittsburgh called, I wasted little time making my decision. I only heard the best things about the team, organization, city and fans. It made my decision even easier. “I’m a competitive guy. I want to win. I saw the Penguins as my best chance.” Michalek isn’t frustrated by being labeled a defensive defenseman: “I don’t take it as an insult. It’s my role, the way I’ve played. Everybody calls me that.” Michalek utilizes many weapons defensively, including height, reach, smarts and anticipation. “I try to use my stick a lot,” said Michalek, who represented the Czech Republic in this year’s Olympics. “The long reach helps, definitely. I try to always put my stick against the opponent’s stick, or on the puck. It makes my job easier. I Michalek utilizes many weapons defensively, including also try to read the game and height, reach, smarts and anticipation. anticipate.” Michalek’s career high for goals is nine, his career high for points 28. The Penguins finished fifth in the NHL with 257 goals last season. If Michalek wants to increase his offensive output, he’s certainly come to the right place. “I want to improve my offense,” Michalek said. “I believe I can do it, especially on a talented team like this. The opposition watches [Sidney] Crosby and [Evgeni] Malkin a lot. If the rest of us get open, [Crosby and Malkin] are going to get the puck to us. There’s going to be more space. “I’m a work in progress. But I believe I can improve and help the team offensively.” Mark Madden hosts a radio show 3-6 p.m. weekdays on WXDX-FM (105.9).

2009-10 STATISTICS (PEORIA; AHL, WILKESBARRE/SCRANTON; AHL) Games Played: 66; Goals: 4; Assists: 18; Points: 22; Penalty Minutes: 30 How would you describe your playing style? I’m a good-skating, puck-moving defenseman. I’m kind of a two-way player and I try to focus on making quick plays to get pucks out of the zone. Who do you model your game after? I would say I probably play a little bit like Alex Goligoski and [former Penguin] Mark Eaton. I’m kind of a mix of both. I’m maybe not as skilled as Alex, but I try to be smart like Eaton was.
What’s the most exciting game you’ve ever played in? I scored my first goal in St. Louis against Minnesota, and my brothers were there, so it was probably my most exciting game. What’s the best thing a coach has said about you? That I’m a good skater and that I see the ice well.

On January 1, 2008, in a game for the ages at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Orchard Park, NY, the Penguins and Sabres took to the great outdoors … and the NHL Winter Classic was born. A National Hockey League attendance record setting crowd of 71,217 witnessed as the Penguins prevailed, 2-1. Sidney Crosby’s shootout-winner amid the snowfall turned the final page on the game’s storybook ending. The success of the 2008 NHL Winter Classic led to it becoming an annual event played on New Year’s Day in a different NHL city. Here’s a summary of the matchups and locations for each game.

CROSBY ON THE PK It’s not as if “Sid the Kid” is poised to become “Sid the Kill.” But if a little help from some previously unanticipated or untapped resources is required killing penalties in Jordan Staal’s extended absence, then the Penguins’ captain is all in. “Oh, yeah, I would like that,” Crosby said. “We have a lot of guys who are capable penalty killers and do a really good job at it. But I think if I need to go in there, if [head coach Dan Bylsma] needs me to play, then yeah, for sure.” It may come to that from time to time as Staal continues to work his way back from offseason foot surgery and post-operative infection complications. “We’re always looking to develop other penalty killers,” general manager Ray Shero has said. “Maybe this means a little bit more for Sidney or ‘Geno’ [Evgeni Malkin] or maybe for other guys we’re looking at to see how they fit in.” The Penguins finished ninth in the NHL in penalty killing in 2009-10 (84.1 percent), and Shero is anticipating the additions of free-agent defensemen Paul Martin and Zbynek Michalek will “add to that on the back end.”
Crosby has been spotted killing penalties once in a while, but not really consistently.
Still, someone is going to have to pick up the Staal slack up front. Why not Crosby? “Since my first year I’ve kind of been spotted there [killing penalties] once in a while, not really consistently,” Crosby said. “I’ve tried to get some feel for it. “I’ve kind of enjoyed it. There’s a little bit of extra space out there sometimes and you

might be able to catch a [power-play] unit tired sometimes at the end of a penalty kill or something like that.” Crosby entered the current campaign having authored 183 career regular-season goals. A grand total of two of those had been scored short-handed, and the first of those wasn’t produced until Oct. 23, 2009 against Florida. But that’s not to suggest he wouldn’t warm up to the idea of becoming adept at generating offense in what’s traditionally been considered a defense-first situation. Throughout his career Crosby has paid particular attention to aspects of his game he felt he needed to improve, from taking face-offs to adopting more of a shoot-more-often mentality to his ability to shoot the puck. Why would penalty killing be any different? “It’s one of those things where you just have to be ready if it comes up,” Crosby said. “If it does your main objective is always to kill the penalty. But at the same time if you can kind of let your instincts help you out in those situations, when you get a chance to score you go for it. But the main objective is always to kill it first. “It’s not something I do a lot so it’s kind of a new challenge. You’re learning things. It’s having that challenge, that objective to go out there and kill a penalty, you’re learning and that’s always fun.” Crosby’s two short-handed goals in 2009-10 tied Malkin and Staal for the team lead. Chris Kunitz registered the only other short-handed tally for the Penguins, whose seven short-handed goals tied five other clubs for 10th in the league. The Stanley Cup Champion Chicago Blackhawks led the NHL last season with 13 short-handed goals. Should Crosby add penalty-killing duties to his already extensive list of game-night responsibilities it would likely only be on a temporary basis. But that’s not to suggest he wouldn’t attack such a task enthusiastically whenever he might be called upon. “Doing it every game would probably be tough with playing the power play and everything,” Crosby said. “It’s hard to do all of that. But to be spotted in, yeah, that would be something I could definitely do. “It’s been more in times when we needed some help [killing penalties]. When you get to the playoffs it’s pretty intense as it is. And at that point guys have a pretty good understanding that they’re going to be killing penalties for the most part and they take a lot of pride in that, as well. “All you can do is try to make sure you’re ready like anyone else would, try to learn what the team is doing, what the other teams do, be involved in the meetings so that if it does happen now you’re ready to go out there and do a good job.”
