AROUND THE NHL Former Penguins right winger Ruslan Fedotenko, a postseason hero for Pittsburgh during its march to a 2009 Stanley Cup championship, earned himself a one-year contract with the New York Rangers on Oct. 4 after participating in training camp on a tryout basis. Fedotenko, 31, led New York in scoring during the exhibition season, picking up seven points (1G-6A) in five Ruslan Fedotenko contests. The Rangers are Fedotenko’s fifth National Hockey League stop following previous stints with Philadelphia, Tampa Bay, NY Islanders and Pittsburgh. Fedotenko recorded 30 points (11G-19A) in 80 games with the Penguins last season.

FEDS LANDS IN ‘BIG APPLE’

CAPS UNVEIL ‘CLASSIC’ JERSEY The Washington Capitals unveiled the jersey they will wear when they face the Penguins in the Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic during the team’s second annual ‘Capitals Convention’ on Oct. 2. Washington’s jersey closely resembles the sweaters the team wore between 1974-75 and 1994-95. It is primarily white in color and it features the Capitals wordmark on the front of the jersey with six stars above it and five stars beneath the numbers on each sleeve. “There is a great sense of history in playing hockey outdoors, and we wanted to pay tribute to our team’s history with this uniform,” vice president and general manager George McPhee told the Capitals’ official team website.

Rob Blake’s offseason retirement left a void at captain for the San Jose Sharks. Head coach Todd McLellan moved quickly to fill the opening when he appointed Joe Thornton as captain on Oct. 4. This marks the second time Thornton has been a captain in the NHL after previously serving in the same role for the Boston Bruins from 2002 until his trade to San Jose in 2005. “We just felt that [Thornton] would be the right guy at this time,” McLellan told NHL.com. “He’s made some real big strides over the last couple of years... This is the next step in the evolution.”

RON BURKLE Ron Burkle has now added a new arena — Pittsburgh’s CONSOL Energy Center — to his tremendous list of accomplishments in the business world. Burkle, widely recognized as one of the preeminent investors in retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 12th season as co-owner of the Penguins. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his role in negotiations for the new arena deal. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is co-chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League and the Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy. He has received numerous awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year and the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year award.

MARIO LEMIEUX Mario Lemieux will always be remembered for the magic he created on the ice, but one of the crowning achievements of his remarkable business career came this season — the opening of CONSOL Energy Center, home of the Penguins and Pittsburgh’s new multi-purpose entertainment venue. Even before the reality of CONSOL Energy Center, Lemieux and coowner Ron Burkle had turned the Penguins into a premier NHL franchise. The Penguins have been named No. 1 in Fan Relations by ESPN the Magazine, sold out a team-record 166 straight games, sold out every suite for three straight seasons and established records for local television ratings, merchandise sales and website hits. Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVPs trophies and two Conn Smythe Trophies as playoff MVP, in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $8 million for charity. DAVID MOREHOUSE Pittsburgh native David Morehouse was named CEO of the Penguins in September and leads the team into an exciting new era at CONSOL Energy Center. Morehouse had served as team president since 2007, overseeing ticket sales, marketing, corporate sales, communications and brand development, as well as representing the team in corporate relations and governmental affairs. Under his leadership the Penguins have become one of the top organizations in professional sports — ranked No. 1 in Fan Relations and No. 5 overall as a franchise among 122 pro teams in North America by ESPN The Magazine. As team president, Morehouse implemented a brand strategy that featured a new commitment to marketing, fan interaction and community outreach, as well as a targeted focus on the team’s young fan demographic. Morehouse grew up in the Beechview section on Pittsburgh. He attended the Community College of Allegheny County and Duquesne University, and received a master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. RAY SHERO Ray Shero, 48, was named GM of the Pittsburgh Penguins on May 25, 2006. His fresh ideas and calm but firm management style helped transform the Penguins from a team that did not qualify for the playoffs in 2005-06 to one that reached the Stanley Cup Final in 2007-08 and won the Cup in 2008-09. One of his first acts as GM was to declare a goal of building a team that could compete for championships on a yearly basis. He revamped the team’s hockey operations staff and structure, upgraded professional and amateur scouting, added a team operations director and opened new lines of communication with the business side of the organization. Ray built his hockey sense and managerial style during 14 seasons as an NHL assistant general manager — six with the Ottawa Senators and eight with the Nashville Predators. Shero played college hockey at St. Lawrence University and was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in 1982. He spent seven years as a player agent before making the transition to the front office. The native of St. Paul, Minn. is actively involved with USA Hockey and is a member of the USA Hockey National Team Advisory Group. Ray and his wife, Karen, and their two sons reside in Upper St. Clair.

JASON BOTTERILL Jason Botterill enters his second full season as assistant general manager after being promoted to his current position on May 22, 2009 by general manager Ray Shero. As assistant GM, Botterill works closely with Shero on all hockeyrelated matters, including scouting, player development and contract negotiations. He also manages hockey operations and acts as GM for the club’s top-minor league affiliate, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League. Prior to his promotion, Botterill, 34, worked two seasons as director of hockey administration with the Penguins. Before joining Pittsburgh, Botterill worked with NHL Central Registry and also scouted for the Dallas Stars. Botterill was a first-round draft pick (20th overall) by Dallas in 1994 and played 88 NHL games over six seasons with Dallas, Atlanta, Calgary and Buffalo. A native of Edmonton who grew up in Winnipeg, Botterill played four seasons at the University of Michigan, where he earned his MBA, and helped lead the Wolverines to the NCAA title in 1996. He also played for Team Canada at the World Junior Championships in 1994, 1995 and 1996, helping his team win gold medals in all three tournaments. DAN BYLSMA In just one-plus seasons behind the bench, Dan Bylsma has already become one of the most successful coaches in Penguins’ history. After being promoted to Penguins head coach in February 2009, Bylsma, 40, directed the team to its third Stanley Cup in franchise history — a feat previously accomplished by legendary coaches “Badger” Bob Johnson and Scott Bowman. In the process Bylsma became the 14th rookie head coach, and just the fourth in the past 50 years, to capture the Stanley Cup. Of those 14, only Montreal’s Al MacNeil (1970-71) took over mid-season. Bylsma played nine NHL seasons as a right winger with Los Angeles and Anaheim from 1995-2004. He played 429 NHL regular-season games, recording 19 goals and 62 points, and also played in the 2003 Stanley Cup Final with Anaheim. Bylsma was an assistant coach at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton for two seasons from 2006-08 and was named head coach at the start of the 2008-09 season. He went 35-16-1-2 in 54 games with WB/S before being promoted to Pittsburgh. He played four seasons of college hockey at Bowling Green. Dan and his wife, Mary Beth, have one son and reside in the North Hills.

TONY GRANATO Tony Granato, 46, begins his second season on the Penguins’ coaching staff. Granato, among his many responsibilities, works with the Penguins’ forwards and penalty killing units. He oversaw the NHL’s ninth-ranked penalty killing group with an 84.1-percent success rate, and second best on the road at 85.3 percent. Prior to joining the Penguins, Granato spent six seasons behind the bench for the Colorado Avalanche and served two stints as Avalanche head coach from 2002-04 and 2008-09. Granato compiled a 215-104-17-16 record and led Colorado to a Northwest Division title in 2003. Granato played 13 seasons in the NHL with the NY Rangers, Los Angeles and San Jose. In 1997, he was the recipient of the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy for overcoming a near career-ending brain injury. In 773 career games, the feisty forward posted 248 goals, 492 points and 1,425 penalty minutes. He appeared in 79 career postseason games and helped lead Los Angeles to a Stanley Cup Final berth in 1993. Granato played four years at the University of Wisconsin and was inducted into the Badgers’ Hall of Fame in 2000. Granato also played for the U.S. National team in 1987-88 and represented his country in the 1988 Olympic Games in Calgary. TODD REIRDEN Todd Reirden, 39, joined Pittsburgh’s coaching staff on July 31, 2010 after coaching with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins the previous two seasons. Reirden, an NHL defenseman for parts of five seasons, works closely with the team’s defensemen. Reirden, completed his first full season as WB/S head coach in 200910, leading a young and inexperienced team to an impressive 41-34-2-3 record, finishing third in the East Division, and a berth in the Calder Cup playoffs. Prior to joining the Penguins organization, Reirden spent one season as an assistant coach with the Bowling Green Falcons (CCHA) — his alma mater. He was a teammate of Bylsma’s during the 1990-91 and 1991-92 seasons at Bowling Green. Selected by New Jersey in the 12th round (242nd overall) of the 1990 NHL Enrty Draft, Reirden played professionally for 13 seasons, retiring after the 2006-07 campaign with Graz EC of the Austrian Hockey League. He appeared in 183 NHL games with Edmonton, St. Louis, Atlanta and Phoenix, recording 46 points (11+35) and 181 penalty minutes. Todd and his wife, Shelby, have one son.

GILLES MELOCHE Former NHL goaltender Gilles Meloche is in his fifth season as the Penguins’ full-time goaltending coach and 25th with the organization. Meloche has been instrumental in developing Marc-Andre Fleury into a Stanley Cup-winning netminder. Meloche served as a Penguins scout from 1989-2006 and also doubled as a goaltending coach/consultant during much of that time. He was also part of the staff when the Penguins won Stanley Cups in 1991 and 1992. A native of Montreal, Quebec, Meloche spent 18 seasons as an NHL goaltender with Chicago, California, Cleveland, Minnesota and Pittsburgh. He played the final three seasons of his career in Pittsburgh following a 1985 trade. Meloche appeared in 788 NHL games during his career, posting a record of 270-351-131 with a 3.64 goals-against average. In 45 career playoff games, he posted a 21-19 record and a 3.48 goals-against average. Gilles and his wife, Sophie, reside in Pittsburgh. His son, Eric, is a pro player who was a member of the Penguins organization from 2000-04.

OUR NEW HOME CONSOL Energy Center opened in August, 2010 as Pittsburgh’s new multi-purpose entertainment venue — home of the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins as well as other professional and collegiate sports, concerts, children’s shows, skating shows and more. It replaces the old Civic Arena/ Mellon Arena, which had operated since 1961 and was home of the Penguins from their inception in CONSOL Energy Center represents an exciting new era for 1967. It was the oldest arena in the the city, the region and the Pittsburgh Penguins. National Hockey League. “CONSOL Energy Center represents an exciting new era for the city, the region and the Pittsburgh Penguins,” said David Morehouse, CEO of the hockey team. “With open concourses, comfortable seating, cutting-edge technology, a state-of-the-art scoreboard and sound system, and an extensive array of food and beverage options, it is a spectacular symbol for the Pittsburgh of the 21st century.” CONSOL Energy Center was completed on time and under budget, thanks to the combined efforts of architectural firms Populous and Astorino; the owner’s representative, ICON; the construction company, PJ Dick/Hunt; and the excellent construction workers and skilled trade workers of Western Pennsylvania. The new arena seats 18,087 for hockey, 19,000 for basketball and almost 20,000 for concerts. It is a green building and is the first NHL arena to attain LEED Gold certification. Even before its doors had opened, CONSOL Energy Center landed commitments from shows that would have bypassed the old arena — the 2012 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament first and second rounds, the 2013 NCAA Frozen Four, and back-to-back concerts by music legend Paul McCartney. McCartney, who first played Pittsburgh with the Beatles in 1964 but hadn’t performed here since 1990, christened the new arena with a grand opening concert on August 18, 2010. In its first season of operation, CONSOL Energy Center also will be home to the Pittsburgh Power of the Arena Football League — bringing indoor football back to the city for the first time in almost 20 years. A funding plan for the new arena project was completed in March, 2007, thanks to the combined efforts of Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell, Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato and Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl, among others. The Sports & Exhibition Authority owns the building on behalf of the city and county, and the Penguins have the lease. The new arena is managed by SMG, with Jay Roberts serving as general manager.

2010 FACE-OFF LUNCHEON On Tuesday, October 5, the Pittsburgh Penguins players and management enjoyed lunch with business leaders of western Pennsylvania and fans. The annual Penguins Face-Off Luncheon was held for a sold-out crowd in the Lexus Club of CONSOL Energy Center to officially kick off the 2010-11 season. The master of ceremony was Mike Lange and the event featured remarks from Penguins Chief Executive Officer/President, David Morehouse, Head Coach, Dan Bylsma and Chief Executive Officer of the Allegheny Conference on Community Development, Dennis Yablonsky. Guests were entertained by a highlight video as lunch was served. They also had an opportunity to win autographed Penguins memorabilia in a Chinese Raffle. Prior to the Luncheon’s start, attendees also had the opportunity to witness the grand unveiling of the Mario Mosaic in the lobby of the Trib Total Media Gate. The 20’x8’ mosaic contains more than 21,000 fan and construction worker photos embedded into a canvas featuring images of Lemieux throughout his career to hoisting the Stanley Cup as an owner in 2009.

The Pittsburgh Penguins Shootout Challenge presented by StarKist is back for its second season with a new age group being added to the competition. Squirt players (ages 9-10) will join Pee Wee players (ages 11-12) in participating in this exciting event being held October 10 and 16 at CONSOL Energy Center. Each age group will have its own competition and championship. And, in another new twist this year, a second competition will be held to crown an overall individual shooter and goaltender in each age group! Both days of the competition will be recorded and will appear as feature segments on the main scoreboard during an intermission of upcoming Penguins home games. Each segment will also appear on the Penguins web site.

The Penguins have a rich history of players from the Czech Republic thanks to stars such as Jaromir Jagr, Martin Straka and Robert Lang. Zbynek Michalek hopes to add his name to the list. Michalek — who joined the Penguins on July 1 — is a shut-down, shot-blocking blueliner who looks to strengthen the team’s already deep defense. After his impressive training camp, it seems the Penguins are getting even more than they asked for. “[Michalek] is even better than advertised,” head coach Dan Bylsma said. “There’s a little more grit and bite to his game and he’s been very good defensively. But he’s also made plays with the puck.” During the preseason, Michalek notched three assists and posted a team-leading plus-five rating. But that success doesn’t mean he’s satisfied. “It’s been a good camp,” he said. “But I can definitely be better, and there’s always room for improvement.” Last season, he tallied 17 points (3G-14A) with Phoenix and helped the team reach 50 wins for the first time in Coyotes history. - head coach Dan Bylsma But since he played in the Western Conference, the Penguins only saw him once a year. So, even though the Penguins knew they were getting a talented, physical defenseman, many people didn’t know exactly how much talent the team was acquiring. “Zbynek surprised me [during camp],” Bylsma said. “Not having coached him before, I’ve only watched him play on video. The battle element of his game and the work ethic of his game were a pleasant surprise.”

Michalek certainly frustrated the other teams during the preseason, but what is scary for Penguins opponents is that Michalek is still adjusting to Pittsburgh’s system. “Coming to a new team and learning a new system is not easy,” Michalek said. “But I feel I’m progressing and getting better every single day.” The defensive pairings are never set in stone and will likely fluctuate throughout the season, but all signs indicate that Michalek will be paired up with Brooks Orpik in the beginning of the season. “I think we play pretty well together in practice,” Michalek said. “We’re pretty similar,” Orpik said. “I think we’re both defensive-minded first.” Much like Bylsma, Orpik never really got a chance to watch Michalek play. “Since he played in the Western Conference, I really didn’t know much about [his game],” Orpik said. “I knew about him and who he was, but in terms of what kind of player he was, I really didn’t know until he got here. But I think everyone’s really impressed. “I think it’s tough for any free agent to come into a new environment and get comfortable on and off the ice, but it seems like he conquered both pretty quickly. I think he’s fit in pretty easily here.” While he’s still getting a feel for Pittsburgh, the 27-year-old Michalek said he is fully acclimated to life in the United States. He came to North America when he was 17 to play in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League and started playing professionally in 2002 with the Minnesota Wild’s top minor-league affiliate in Houston.

“I feel like this is my second home because I spend so much time here,” he said. “I came here when I was 17, so 10 years in America is a long time. “I like it here, I met my wife here and I feel really comfortable being here.” Michalek said he misses the sunny weather in the Arizona desert, although Pittsburgh’s climate reminds him of home. “The Czech Republic kind of has the same weather as here, with four seasons and snow and rain,” he said. “So it’s like going back to my younger days when I was growing up.” During those days in the Czech Republic, Michalek — like many Czechs — cheered for the Penguins. “The Pittsburgh Penguins are one of the most popular teams in the Czech Republic, especially because of guys like Jagr and Straka and so many good Czech players,” he said. “I know the history here is really long and hopefully I can create a good name for Czech players here.” He’s off to a great start. And maybe, there will soon be more young Penguins fans in the Czech Republic looking up to him.

VIDEO CAMERAS Use of video or audio recording equipment is strictly prohibited. CONSOL Energy Center reserves the right to confiscate any tape or film and remove the patron from the building.

WHEELCHAIRS A limited number of wheelchairs are available for transporting guests that are disabled to their seating location. Guests can be transported from the gates to their seats. THE PENGUINS GAME VAULT OCTOBER 5, 1990 • PENGUINS 7, CAPITALS 4 CAPITAL CENTRE Offseason moves which included the appointment of proven winner ‘Badger’ Bob Johnson as head coach and future Hall of Famers Bryan Trottier and Joe Mullen increased expectations on the Pittsburgh Penguins as the team entered the 1990-91 season. Those expectations became tempered when the news hit that superstar Mario Lemieux was going to miss the beginning of the season with a back infection. However, the Penguins never missed a beat without their best player thanks to the play of the team’s top line of Kevin Stevens, John Cullen and Mark Recchi. Stevens, Cullen and Recchi began their assault on the National Hockey League during the 1990-91 season opener, when the trio Kevin Stevens established an NHL record combined for 15 points in a 7-4 Penguins’ for points on opening night with six (2G-4A) victory over the Washington Capitals at the — a mark that still stands 20 years later. Not long after Stevens lit the lamp for the second time in the game, he picked up assists No. 3 and 4 as he and Cullen helped set up a pair of Recchi insurance tallies. Tom Barrasso picked up the win in goal, stopping 20 of 24 shots along the way, while 18-year-old rookie sensation Jaromir Jagr finished the night with one shot on goal and a plus-two rating in his NHL debut. In addition to Stevens’ record-setting performance, Recchi (2G-2A) and Cullen (5A) also matched the scoring exploits of the hulking winger. The Stevens-Cullen-Recchi unit continued its strong play throughout the 1990-91 season, as each was named to the all-star game in Chicago later that year.
