B’S INK A PAIR A two-day spending spree by the Boston Bruins on Oct. 8-9 locked up a pair of integral core pieces. On Oct. 8, forward Patrice Bergeron agreed with Boston on a three-year deal that will keep him in Beantown through the 2013-14 campaign. Less than 24 hours later, the Bruins were able to finish off a seven-year contract with captain Zdeno Chara to retain his services through 2017-18. Patrice Bergeron Bergeron, 25, has spent his entire seven-year career with Boston. He has registered 280 points (99G-181G) in 377 career contests. Chara, 33, is entering his fifth season with Boston following stints in Long Island and Ottawa. Chara was the James Norris Trophy (best defenseman) winner in 2008-09.

Last season, Detroit Red Wings forward Pavel Datsyuk picked up his third-straight Lady Byng Trophy as the most gentlemanly player in the National Hockey League. His actions in the Red Wings’ season-opening 4-0 defeat of the Anaheim Ducks suggests a fourth might not be on the horizon. Against the Ducks, Datsyuk recorded his first “Gordie Howe” hat trick — a goal, an assist and a fight in the same game. Datsyuk accomplished this unique feat by scoring his first goal of the season at 5:29 of the first period, assisting on Dan Cleary’s tally at 16:55 of the middle frame and by dropping the gloves in a spirited bout with Anaheim’s Corey Perry at 7:41 of the third period.

Taylor Hall, the No. 1-overall selection of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, might garner a lot of the attention in Edmonton, but it was another rookie, 20-year-old Jordan Eberle, who stole the show on opening night. Eberle, Edmonton’s first-round draft pick (22nd overall) Jordan Eberle in 2008, not only picked up a goal and an assist in his NHL debut, he scored a goal NHL.com already dubbed “goal of the year.” Carrying the puck down the right wing on a shorthanded two-on-one, Eberle used a beautiful toe-drag move to elude a Calgary defender before turning the puck over to his backhand and tucking a shot behind Miikka Kiprusoff.

RON BURKLE Ron Burkle has now added a new arena — Pittsburgh’s CONSOL Energy Center — to his tremendous list of accomplishments in the business world. Burkle, widely recognized as one of the preeminent investors in retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 12th season as co-owner of the Penguins. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his role in negotiations for the new arena deal. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is co-chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League and the Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy. He has received numerous awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year and the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year award.

MARIO LEMIEUX Mario Lemieux will always be remembered for the magic he created on the ice, but one of the crowning achievements of his remarkable business career came this season — the opening of CONSOL Energy Center, home of the Penguins and Pittsburgh’s new multi-purpose entertainment venue. Even before the reality of CONSOL Energy Center, Lemieux and coowner Ron Burkle had turned the Penguins into a premier NHL franchise. The Penguins have been named No. 1 in Fan Relations by ESPN the Magazine, sold out a team-record 166 straight games, sold out every suite for three straight seasons and established records for local television ratings, merchandise sales and website hits. Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVPs trophies and two Conn Smythe Trophies as playoff MVP, in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $8 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org. Mario, his wife Nathalie and their four children live in Sewickley. For extended bios please visit pittsburghpenguins.com 10

DAVID MOREHOUSE Pittsburgh native David Morehouse was named CEO of the Penguins in September and leads the team into an exciting new era at CONSOL Energy Center. Morehouse had served as team president since 2007, overseeing ticket sales, marketing, corporate sales, communications and brand development, as well as representing the team in corporate relations and governmental affairs. Under his leadership the Penguins have become one of the top organizations in professional sports — ranked No. 1 in Fan Relations and No. 5 overall as a franchise among 122 pro teams in North America by ESPN The Magazine. As team president, Morehouse implemented a brand strategy that featured a new commitment to marketing, fan interaction and community outreach, as well as a targeted focus on the team’s young fan demographic. Morehouse grew up in the Beechview section on Pittsburgh. He attended the Community College of Allegheny County and Duquesne University, and received a master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. He and his wife, Vanessa, have three children and live in Bell Acres. For extended bios please visit pittsburghpenguins.com

RAY SHERO Ray Shero, 48, was named GM of the Pittsburgh Penguins on May 25, 2006. His fresh ideas and calm but firm management style helped transform the Penguins from a team that did not qualify for the playoffs in 2005-06 to one that reached the Stanley Cup Final in 2007-08 and won the Cup in 2008-09. One of his first acts as GM was to declare a goal of building a team that could compete for championships on a yearly basis. He revamped the team’s hockey operations staff and structure, upgraded professional and amateur scouting, added a team operations director and opened new lines of communication with the business side of the organization. Ray built his hockey sense and managerial style during 14 seasons as an NHL assistant general manager — six with the Ottawa Senators and eight with the Nashville Predators. Shero played college hockey at St. Lawrence University and was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in 1982. He spent seven years as a player agent before making the transition to the front office. The native of St. Paul, Minn. is actively involved with USA Hockey and is a member of the USA Hockey National Team Advisory Group. Ray and his wife, Karen, and their two sons reside in Upper St. Clair.

JASON BOTTERILL Jason Botterill enters his second full season as assistant general manager after being promoted to his current position on May 22, 2009 by general manager Ray Shero. As assistant GM, Botterill works closely with Shero on all hockeyrelated matters, including scouting, player development and contract negotiations. He also manages hockey operations and acts as GM for the club’s top-minor league affiliate, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League. Prior to his promotion, Botterill, 34, worked two seasons as director of hockey administration with the Penguins. Before joining Pittsburgh, Botterill worked with NHL Central Registry and also scouted for the Dallas Stars. Botterill was a first-round draft pick (20th overall) by Dallas in 1994 and played 88 NHL games over six seasons with Dallas, Atlanta, Calgary and Buffalo. A native of Edmonton who grew up in Winnipeg, Botterill played four seasons at the University of Michigan, where he earned his MBA, and helped lead the Wolverines to the NCAA title in 1996. He also played for Team Canada at the World Junior Championships in 1994, 1995 and 1996, helping his team win gold medals in all three tournaments. He resides in Pittsburgh along with his wife, Andrea. For extended bios please visit pittsburghpenguins.com 14

DAN BYLSMA In just one-plus seasons behind the bench, Dan Bylsma has already become one of the most successful coaches in Penguins’ history. After being promoted to Penguins head coach in February 2009, Bylsma, 40, directed the team to its third Stanley Cup in franchise history — a feat previously accomplished by legendary coaches “Badger” Bob Johnson and Scott Bowman. In the process Bylsma became the 14th rookie head coach, and just the fourth in the past 50 years, to capture the Stanley Cup. Of those 14, only Montreal’s Al MacNeil (1970-71) took over mid-season. Bylsma played nine NHL seasons as a right winger with Los Angeles and Anaheim from 1995-2004. He played 429 NHL regular-season games, recording 19 goals and 62 points, and also played in the 2003 Stanley Cup Final with Anaheim. Bylsma was an assistant coach at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton for two seasons from 2006-08 and was named head coach at the start of the 2008-09 season. He went 35-16-1-2 in 54 games with WB/S before being promoted to Pittsburgh. He played four seasons of college hockey at Bowling Green. Dan and his wife, Mary Beth, have one son and reside in the North Hills.

TONY GRANATO Tony Granato, 46, begins his second season on the Penguins’ coaching staff. Granato, among his many responsibilities, works with the Penguins’ forwards and penalty killing units. He oversaw the NHL’s ninth-ranked penalty killing group with an 84.1-percent success rate, and second best on the road at 85.3 percent. Prior to joining the Penguins, Granato spent six seasons behind the bench for the Colorado Avalanche and served two stints as Avalanche head coach from 2002-04 and 2008-09. Granato compiled a 215-104-17-16 record and led Colorado to a Northwest Division title in 2003. Granato played 13 seasons in the NHL with the NY Rangers, Los Angeles and San Jose. In 1997, he was the recipient of the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy for overcoming a near career-ending brain injury. In 773 career games, the feisty forward posted 248 goals, 492 points and 1,425 penalty minutes. He appeared in 79 career postseason games and helped lead Los Angeles to a Stanley Cup Final berth in 1993. Granato played four years at the University of Wisconsin and was inducted into the Badgers’ Hall of Fame in 2000. Granato also played for the U.S. National team in 1987-88 and represented his country in the 1988 Olympic Games in Calgary. Tony and his wife, Linda, are the parents of four children and reside in the South Hills. For extended bios please visit pittsburghpenguins.com 16

TODD REIRDEN Todd Reirden, 39, joined Pittsburgh’s coaching staff on July 31, 2010 after coaching with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins the previous two seasons. Reirden, an NHL defenseman for parts of five seasons, works closely with the team’s defensemen. Reirden, completed his first full season as WB/S head coach in 200910, leading a young and inexperienced team to an impressive 41-34-2-3 record, finishing third in the East Division, and a berth in the Calder Cup playoffs. Prior to joining the Penguins organization, Reirden spent one season as an assistant coach with the Bowling Green Falcons (CCHA) — his alma mater. He was a teammate of Bylsma’s during the 1990-91 and 1991-92 seasons at Bowling Green. Selected by New Jersey in the 12th round (242nd overall) of the 1990 NHL Enrty Draft, Reirden played professionally for 13 seasons, retiring after the 2006-07 campaign with Graz EC of the Austrian Hockey League. He appeared in 183 NHL games with Edmonton, St. Louis, Atlanta and Phoenix, recording 46 points (11+35) and 181 penalty minutes. Todd and his wife, Shelby, have one son.

GILLES MELOCHE Former NHL goaltender Gilles Meloche is in his fifth season as the Penguins’ full-time goaltending coach and 25th with the organization. Meloche has been instrumental in developing Marc-Andre Fleury into a Stanley Cup-winning netminder. Meloche served as a Penguins scout from 1989-2006 and also doubled as a goaltending coach/consultant during much of that time. He was also part of the staff when the Penguins won Stanley Cups in 1991 and 1992. A native of Montreal, Quebec, Meloche spent 18 seasons as an NHL goaltender with Chicago, California, Cleveland, Minnesota and Pittsburgh. He played the final three seasons of his career in Pittsburgh following a 1985 trade. Meloche appeared in 788 NHL games during his career, posting a record of 270-351-131 with a 3.64 goals-against average. In 45 career playoff games, he posted a 21-19 record and a 3.48 goals-against average. Gilles and his wife, Sophie, reside in Pittsburgh. His son, Eric, is a pro player who was a member of the Penguins organization from 2000-04.

OUR NEW HOME CONSOL Energy Center opened in August, 2010 as Pittsburgh’s new multi-purpose entertainment venue — home of the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins as well as other professional and collegiate sports, concerts, children’s shows, skating shows and more. It replaces the old Civic Arena/ Mellon Arena, which had operated since 1961 and was home of the Penguins from their inception in CONSOL Energy Center represents an exciting new era for 1967. It was the oldest arena in the the city, the region and the Pittsburgh Penguins. National Hockey League. “CONSOL Energy Center represents an exciting new era for the city, the region and the Pittsburgh Penguins,” said David Morehouse, CEO of the hockey team. “With open concourses, comfortable seating, cutting-edge technology, a state-of-the-art scoreboard and sound system, and an extensive array of food and beverage options, it is a spectacular symbol for the Pittsburgh of the 21st century.” CONSOL Energy Center was completed on time and under budget, thanks to the combined efforts of architectural firms Populous and Astorino; the owner’s representative, ICON; the construction company, PJ Dick/Hunt; and the excellent construction workers and skilled trade workers of Western Pennsylvania. The new arena seats 18,087 for hockey, 19,000 for basketball and almost 20,000 for concerts. It is a green building and is the first NHL arena to attain LEED Gold certification. Even before its doors had opened, CONSOL Energy Center landed commitments from shows that would have bypassed the old arena — the 2012 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament first and second rounds, the 2013 NCAA Frozen Four, and back-to-back concerts by music legend Paul McCartney. McCartney, who first played Pittsburgh with the Beatles in 1964 but hadn’t performed here since 1990, christened the new arena with a grand opening concert on August 18, 2010. In its first season of operation, CONSOL Energy Center also will be home to the Pittsburgh Power of the Arena Football League — bringing indoor football back to the city for the first time in almost 20 years. A funding plan for the new arena project was completed in March, 2007, thanks to the combined efforts of Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell, Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato and Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl, among others. The Sports & Exhibition Authority owns the building on behalf of the city and county, and the Penguins have the lease. The new arena is managed by SMG, with Jay Roberts serving as general manager.

COMMUNITY UPDATE

2010 FACE-OFF LUNCHEON On Tuesday, October 5, the Pittsburgh Penguins players and management enjoyed lunch with business leaders of western Pennsylvania and fans. The annual Penguins Face-Off Luncheon was held for a sold-out crowd in the Lexus Club of CONSOL Energy Center to officially kick off the 2010-11 season. The master of ceremony was Mike Lange and the event featured remarks from Penguins Chief Executive Officer/President, David Morehouse, Head Coach, Dan Bylsma and Chief Executive Officer of the Allegheny Conference on Community Development, Dennis Yablonsky. Guests were entertained by a highlight video as lunch was served. They also had an opportunity to win autographed Penguins memorabilia in a Chinese Raffle. Prior to the Luncheon’s start, attendees also had the opportunity to witness the grand unveiling of the Mario Mosaic in the lobby of the Trib Total Media Gate. The 20’x8’ mosaic contains more than 21,000 fan and construction worker photos embedded into a canvas featuring images of Lemieux throughout his career to hoisting the Stanley Cup as an owner in 2009.

MARTIN THRIVES IN PENGUINS’ UP-TEMPO SYSTEM It’s every hockey player’s dream to compete in the playoffs and win a Stanley Cup. Defenseman Paul Martin has been in the playoffs six years in a row with the New Jersey Devils, but he has yet to etch his name on hockey’s Holy Grail. So, as a free agent this summer, Martin carefully evaluated which team would give him the best chance to win the Cup. “[The Penguins] are going to continue to contend for the Cup every year, and that’s something that I would love to be a part of,” said Martin, who signed with the Penguins on July 1. Not only do the Penguins have a young team capable of contesting for the Cup every year, but the team’s system is Martin’s puck-handling and skating abilities are something that impressed Penguins’ coach, Dan Bylsma.

also something that appealed to Martin. “I like the way the

Penguins play the game,” he said. “The defense has a chance to be more active and join the rush and help out on the offensive end, which is something that I wanted to be a part of.” Head coach Dan Bylsma’s system gives the defenseman more of an opportunity to join the rush than what Martin saw with the defense-first Devils. continued on page 47

“When we don’t have the puck, we want all five guys to be playing defense,” Bylsma said. “But when we have the puck, all five guys will be playing offense.” That style of play is perfect for the offensive-minded Martin. “It’s a system that helps if you’re a defenseman,” he said. “They expect the D to help break out the puck and join the rush.” Martin’s puck-handling and skating abilities are something that impressed Bylsma. “He is showing right off the bat his smarts as a player and what he brings to the table and the assets that he has,” Bylsma said. Throughout most of training camp and the first few games, Martin was paired up with Kris Letang, which has proven to be a perfect match. “I think we’re similar,” Letang said. “We both like to play with the puck and we like to jump in the rush, we’re not strictly defensive. We play both offensively and defensively.” Letang, like Bylsma, was impressed by Martin from Day One. “He’s really poised, and he’s good with the puck,” Letang said. “He’s a very smart D-man, he never puts himself in a bad position. He’s always in a good spot.” Typically, an offensiveminded defenseman would

be paired up with a physical, shut-down blueliner. But Martin said that since the game is changing, so is that defensive mindset. “Gone is the typical thought that you need the big defenseman with the skilled guy,” he said. “And especially with the way the game is, I think you can benefit when you have two guys who can move the puck and skate.” He said that his pairing with

Despite coming from the division-rival New Jersey Devils, Martin has been made to feel at home in Pittsburgh.

Letang can lead to some great chemistry. “I think the biggest thing is just getting comfortable with each other and finding out where he’s going to be and where I’m going to be,” Martin said. “But that will happen with time. We both can make plays. It helps when you’re both on the same page and working together.” But like any player that is entering a new team and a new system, Martin is facing some challenging adjustments. Martin has spent his entire career with the Devils, so joining a division rival is especially difficult. Martin said it’s easy to develop some negative feelings toward opposing players — especially division rivals, but once he came into the Penguins locker room, any hard feelings were forgotten and he immediately felt at home. “It’s a good locker room and good group of guys,” he said. “If you know that you’re appreciated off the ice as well as on the ice, it definitely helps.” It also helps that defenseman Zbynek Michalek — who signed with the Penguins the same day as Martin — is going through the exact same situation. “We’re kind of going through the same process,” Martin said. “We can feed off each other and learn together. And the coaching staff and the other defensemen have been great about helping us out.” Martin is quick to give credit to the Penguins’ management — general manager Ray Shero and owner Mario Lemieux — for building the successful team that lured him to Pittsburgh. “They’ve had a lot of success here,” Martin said. “And that happens for a reason when you have the right people in charge.” 48

I feel

.

Ask a grieving child how they’re feeling and you may get a lot of answers. Or none at all. For many, finding the words to express their feelings can be difficult. But while finding the right words may not be easy, finding the right place to turn to for help can be. At the Caring Place, we’re here when grieving children need someone to listen, to talk, or to just sit and be. For more information about one of our peer support groups or to volunteer, call us today.

THE PENGUINS GAME VAULT OCTOBER 26, 1995 • PENGUINS 7, ISLANDERS 5 NASSAU COLISEUM When the puck was dropped between the Penguins and New York Islanders on Oct. 26, 1995, Penguins center Mario Lemieux sat three goals shy of reaching the illustrious 500-goal mark. By the final buzzer, the future Hall of Famer was the second-fastest player in National Hockey League history to hit 500, as his 32nd career hat trick allowed him to accomplish the feat in a mere 605 games. Lemieux buried the historic marker at the 17:12 mark of the third period. Dangling with the puck like only he could, Lemieux took a drop pass from Tomas Sandstrom in the near circle and held onto the puck long enough for Islanders defenseman Bob Beers to front him. As soon as Lemieux had Beers where he wanted, he used him as a Lemieux was the second-fastest player in screen to slip goal No. 500 between the legs National Hockey League history to hit 500 of Islanders netminder Tommy Soderstrom. accomplishing the feat in 605 games. Lemieux’s goal gave the Penguins a twogoal cushion that provided the insurance which allowed them to overcome a 4-3 secondperiod deficit in a see-saw battle at Nassau Coliseum. Pittsburgh had jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after one period on goals by Ron Francis and Lemieux, but the pesky Islanders struck four times in the second period on tallies by Alexander Semak, Ziggy Palffy (twice) and Travis Green. Sandstrom tallied the lone Pittsburgh goal of the middle frame when he scored at even strength at 18:18. New York’s lead didn’t last long, however, as Lemieux found the back of the net for the second time in the game just 19 seconds into the third period to tie the game at 4-4. Pittsburgh’s high-scoring offensive attack took over from there, as Sandstrom notched his second goal of the game midway through the final period and Jaromir Jagr added another less than two minutes later. Lemieux’s three-goal effort earned him the game’s No. 1 star, while Sandstrom picked up the third star with two goals and an assist. The 7-5 win over the Islanders began a stretch which saw the Penguins go on a 9-1-1 tear that catapulted them to the top of the Northeast Division en route to a division championship and Eastern Conference Finals appearance.

RMU EAGER TO TAKE CENTER STAGE AT CONSOL The next game scheduled at CONSOL Energy Center after tonight’s Penguins-Islanders confrontation will be contested by a couple of teams determined to give it the old college try. That’s the way it always works in the Pittsburgh College Hockey Showcase. This season’s clash will have a tough time topping last year’s in terms of the spectacular, even given the luxurious new facility that will play host to Robert Morris University and Air Force at 6 p.m. on Sunday night. Last season, the Colonials stunned then-No. 1 Miami, Ohio, 3-1, on Jan. 8, 2010 in front of 3,654 at Mellon Arena. The victory was the first for Robert Morris in a Pittsburgh College Hockey Showcase history that previously included a 6-2 loss to Notre Dame (Jan. 5, 2007), a 5-5 tie against Ohio State (Nov. 16, 2007) and a 4-0 loss to the Buckeyes (Nov. 14, 2008). This year’s game has been moved up on the schedule to afford fans that haven’t had an opportunity to attend one of the Penguins’ first four home games the chance to see a game in the new arena. In the process, they might just discover what RMU hockey is all about. “We’re obviously very excited to have a chance to play in the new venue,” Robert Morris head coach Derek Schooley said. “The support the Penguins and the management team at CONSOL Energy Center have given us has been tremendous. “Opportunities such as these help increase the visibility of our hockey program.” The Colonials will also play at CONSOL on Dec. 30, when they host RIT, a participant in last season’s NCAA Frozen Four, in conjunction with “Winter Classic Week” festivities in Pittsburgh. Air Force comes in at 0-2 rather than at No. 1 in the country, as Miami had last season. But the Falcons have a recent history of success that includes qualifying for the 16-team NCAA Tournament in three straight campaigns (2006-07 through 2008-09) and beating Michigan, 2-0, in the 2009 tourney. RMU, entering its seventh NCAA Division I season, has twice come within an overtime goal of qualifying for the NCAA tourney. Last year’s 10-19-6 campaign was highlighted by back-to-back victories over the No. 1 Red Hawks (the Colonials beat Miami, 2-1, in Oxford, Ohio two days after pulling the upset continued on page 99

QUALITY IS ALL WE THINK ABOUT. THAT AND QUALITY.

THINK ABOUT IT. First, we pioneered the 10-year/100,000-mile warranty. Then, we led the way with Hyundai Assurance. Now, the EPA has just named Hyundai the most fuel-efficient carmaker in America.* Sure, it’s another important milestone reached, but it’s also a reminder to stay focused on whatever lies ahead. “Opportunities such as these help increase the visibility of our hockey program.” - Robert Morris head coach Derek Schooley

RMU’s victories at American International came in its first two games as a member of Atlantic Hockey. The Colonials played in College Hockey America last season, a conference that was down to just four members (Niagara, Bemidji State and Alabama-Huntsville). The move has generated a great deal of excitement for the program heading into this season. So has the scheduling of the two games at CONSOL and the return of 23 of 27 players from a season ago. Among the returnees are the Colonials’ leading scorer (Nathan Longpre), their top defenseman (Denny Urban) and their No. 1 goaltender (Brooks Ostergard). “The change in leagues has brought a newfound excitement,” Schooley said. “I think people will be excited to see new teams in our building and excited to see us playing more than the same teams over and over again.” Robert Morris and the Penguins will also be hosting the 2012-13 Frozen Four at CONSOL, a development that should also continue to increase the program’s visibility. The Colonials call the Island Sports Center on Neville Island home when they’re not playing at CONSOL. “We have potential, but potential is just expectation,” Schooley said. “Whether we meet those expectations is up to whether we do things the right way, do it on a daily basis and continue to improve.”

TEAM USA INLINE Most world championship runs are improbable at best; pipe dreams that offer a once in a lifetime opportunity to sit at the top of your sport at the highest level. For Team USA inline hockey, they have come to be expected. In an incredible run, Team USA had taken the gold medal 12 times in the last 15 years at the Fédération Internationale de Roller Sports (FIRS) World Championships heading into the 2010 tournament. Although it would seem that another championship would be expected, those that were closest to the team weren’t so sure that the team would be as fortunate at the 2010 FIRS championships. “Everybody was worried to death,” said Jon Roux, Director of National Development for USA Roller Sports. “For 12 or 13 years it’s been the same guys, but we lost 10 veteran players so we had to replace almost the entire team. It went from us dominating to just as long as we win a medal.” Little did Roux, or anyone else from Team USA, know that the new players that they brought in were just as good as the ones they replaced. During the five-day tournament that took place in Beroun, Czech Republic, Team USA outscored their opponents, 34-8, and continued its dominance of years past on the way to its 13th gold medal. “Nobody expected that,” Roux said. “the team was 90 percent new, with one or two guys with a year of experience. One of the biggest reasons why Team USA was able to continue its run of gold medals this year despite having new players is the quality of young talent available. In fact, Roux didn’t have to look far to find the elite talent he was looking for. Roux, a Pittsburgh resident, found some of the talent he needed from leagues like the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Roller Hockey League (PIRHL), which he works with in addition to his position with USA Roller Sports. Out of the 14 players on Team USA, four are from Pennsylvania, including Roux’s son, Dustin, who is currently finishing his senior year at Penn State. “We’re very lucky to have the PIRHL here in Pittsburgh,” Roux said. “There aren’t many leagues that are as big as the PIRHL. It has just taken off around here. We are graduating anywhere from 150 to 200 kids every year out of the league.” The amount of players that the PIRHL produces and the spread of hockey in the area are some of the reasons Roux has been able to find some of the best talent in the country right here in Pittsburgh. Roux hopes that roller hockey leagues like the PIRHL continue to feed their top talents to Team USA so that it can continue its dominance at the international level. As for Team USA’s goals for upcoming World Championships, everyone at USA Roller Sports has high hopes for the future. “I see no reason why we won’t win the next couple of years,” Roux said. “The next five or six years should be really good for us.” 103

NEW COACH BRINGS SAME SUCCESS TO WB/S Fifteen years ago, John Hynes was celebrating a national championship with his Boston University Terriers teammates. This past summer, he had a chance to join that team for a reunion in Massachusetts. Now, Hynes has another reunion to enjoy — with many of the players he helped coach last season in northeastern Pennsylvania. Only this time, he is the one running the show. Meet the seventh head coach in Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton Penguins history. Upon the promotion of Todd Reirden to Pittsburgh Penguins’ assistant coach this summer, John Hynes Hynes was charged with taking over the head coaching reins on July 31. Like Reirden, who took over for Dan Bylsma, time was precious. But for Hynes, he never felt rushed, nor did he feel pressure. He was quick to credit the success of his predecessors. “I think I’ve had a great model that’s been in front of me starting with the tradition of the most recent coaches, with Todd Richards, Dan Bylsma, and Todd Reirden,” Hynes said. “The culture that’s been set up with the organization has put good, passionate people in positions to work, and they let them work. We have a good template as to how we want to play, how we communicate with players, and how we communicate as a coaching staff from Pittsburgh to Wilkes-Barre to Wheeling. Last year was great. Todd and I had a great relationship working together, and he afforded me a great responsibility as far as working under him. I think it’s been a great transition coming in. Now it’s time to continue the tradition that’s been set before me.” Part of that tradition has the Penguins defined as a playoff contender year after year. It was by no accident that Wilkes-Barre/Scranton has made the postseason for eight consecutive years, which is tied for the longest streak in the American Hockey League. But Penguins fans want more, and deservedly so: the elusive Calder Cup. The team is averaging one trip to the finals every four years. If you believe in patterns, Wilkes-Barre will make that trip to the “dance” this season. With offseason signings like the Penguins made, that theorem can be proven. But does a brandnew head coach feel any extra pressure, having to coach a new group of players brimming with talent? “Absolutely not,” Hynes pointed out. “One of the greatest things about being able to work with this team is having great players and great character. As a coach continued on page 117

you want players who have great hockey minds. It is exciting to be able to have those guys in place, and to have their talent and work ethic at your hands. But it is my job to help them reach their goals of where they want to go as a team and as individuals. I’m excited about the kind of guys we’re going to have in the room.” Hynes was also quick to point out that this team’s success is not just riding on players like Brett Sterling, Andrew Hutchinson, Corey Potter and Ryan Craig, three of the most notable offseason signings in Penguins history. It also rides on the success of players who have carved their roots here a few years ago, as well as the rookies of the 2009-10 season. “This team has excellent players coming back, as well as excellent players coming in,” Hynes added. “Players like Joe Vitale, Zach Sill, Robert Bortuzzo, Brian Strait, and Brad Thiessen had opportunities to get better, and they did. The team also has that core of players like Tim Wallace, Mark Letestu, Nick Johnson, Dustin Jeffrey and John Curry who have been here a little longer and have also continued to build their success.” Hynes was also quick to point out that a team can be built with all the talent in the world on paper, but talent alone does not win championships. One of the signs visible to all of the players as they exit their locker room to hit the ice reads “Will you get better today?” Hynes believes that any 50-goal scorer, any defenseman with a plus-30 rating, or any goaltender with a 1.50 goals-against average all have room to get better. His resume, complete with six straight IIHF medals during his tenure within the USA Hockey National Team Development Program, shows Hynes’ commitment to making players of all caliber get better. With John Hynes at the helm in this 12th season of Penguins hockey, expect this team to get better. Expect this team to contend. Expect this team to succeed.

On January 1, 2008, in a game for the ages at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Orchard Park, NY, the Penguins and Sabres took to the great outdoors … and the NHL Winter Classic was born. A National Hockey League attendance record setting crowd of 71,217 witnessed as the Penguins prevailed, 2-1. Sidney Crosby’s shootout-winner amid the snowfall turned the final page on the game’s storybook ending. The success of the 2008 NHL Winter Classic led to it becoming an annual event played on New Year’s Day in a different NHL city. Here’s a summary of the matchups and locations for each game.

PENS PROFILE TYLER KENNEDY

Tyler Kennedy says, “I try to never read the papers.” But the Penguins winger knows what was written and said. Kennedy did not have a great season in 2009-10. His production fell off by 10 points, his plus/minus dropped by five. Kennedy was perceived as not playing the style that made him such a valuable contributor to the Penguins’ Stanley Cup winner in 2009. Some whispered that his spot was in jeopardy. “Tyler should think about playing his game a lot more than scoring goals,” said coach Dan Bylsma. “He needs to win puck battles. He is a guy who likes to be on the outside a little more and needs to get inside a lot more and get to the net.” Is Kennedy out of the woods yet? There’s no telling. But his play in the season’s early going was very encouraging. Kennedy scored the first Penguins goal in CONSOL Energy Center history, netting in the third period of a 3-2 opening-game loss to Philadelphia on Oct. 7. He skated a regular shift on the third line, just like always, during the Penguins’ first Tyler Kennedy recorded the first Penguins regular-season goal in CONSOL Energy Center history three games. in the Penguins’ loss to Philadelphia on October 7. “I always want to make a statement,” Kennedy said. “Every game, I’m trying to play my best. I know I’m going to play in this league and I know I’m a good hockey player.” Kennedy tallied 13 goals and 12 assists in 64 games last season. He was plus-10. Kennedy was pleased with his play against the Flyers. continued on page 141

“I CAN’T YELL AT [LETESTU] LIKE I DO WITH STAALSY. NOT YET,” KENNEDY JOKED. “BUT WE’RE BUILDING CHEMISTRY. IT’S GOOD.” 140

continued from page 139

“I felt good,” said the 5-foot-11, 183-pounder. “I’m playing with confidence right now. My biggest thing is holding onto the puck. If I’ve got the puck, I’m doing good things with it.” The best thing he did vs. Kennedy and Cooke found themselves centered Philadelphia was by rookie Mark Letestu in the first two games of this campaign. rifle a shot into the net behind rookie goalie Sergei Bobrovsky. The goal came at 44 seconds of the third period and cut the Flyers’ lead to 2-1. Defenseman Paul Martin slipped a lateral pass through the slot. Kennedy corralled it and scored from a difficult angle. “I saw an opening, and I tried to put everything I had on it,” said Kennedy. “I’ve scored quite a few goals from [that angle]. “It was great to score, but it stinks that we lost. You’ve got to keep your head up and move forward. We got better as the game went on. We were throwing pucks at the net more, being smarter with the puck, and making the right decisions at the [blue] line.” The Penguins’ third line has been reconstructed, and remained a work in progress as the season entered its second week. Kennedy, Jordan Staal and Matt Cooke played together regularly over the last two seasons. But Staal is currently injured and ticketed for duty on Evgeni Malkin’s trio when he returns. Kennedy and Cooke thus found themselves centered by rookie Mark Letestu in the campaign’s first two games. Letestu started his season with a bang, scoring twice in the Penguins’ first three contests. “Mark’s a great center,” said Kennedy, 24. “He should be here. I’ve got nothing but good things to say about him. He’s a smart player. He can score goals. It’s exciting to skate with him.” But it’s not like skating with Staal. Not only were Staal and Kennedy long-time linemates, they’re close friends. “I can’t yell at [Letestu] like I do with Staalsy. Not yet,” Kennedy joked. “But we’re building chemistry. It’s good.” Kennedy needed a good camp. He had one. A quality start to the season was very preferable. So far, so good. “I know I can play,” Kennedy said. “Now I have to prove it. “Your game changes as your get older. I’m just trying to mature and take care of my body. I’m trying to get better as a player and as a teammate.” Mark Madden hosts a radio show 3-6 p.m. weekdays at WXDX-FM (105.9).
