BABCOCK EXTENDED In five seasons behind the bench for the Detroit Red Wings, Mike Babcock has established quite a resume for himself. During that period, the 47-year-old bench boss has: won a Stanley Cup (in 2008), made two Cup Final appearances (2008 and 2009) and has posted four 50-plus win seasons. Babcock was rewarded for his success with a four-year contract extension on Oct. 11 that will keep him with Detroit Mike Babcock through at least the 2014-15 campaign. In 576 career games through Oct. 11, Babcock has posted a 328-163-85 overall record in seven-plus seasons with Detroit and the Anaheim Ducks.
DUCKS ADD DEPTH Injuries along the blue line forced the Anaheim Ducks to dip into the free agent pool to add depth to a banged-up unit. With Andy Sutton out indefinitely with a broken thumb and Toni Lydman already on the shelf, Anaheim agreed to a one-year contract with Andreas Lilja on Oct. 11. Lilja, 35, has spent the past five seasons skating for the Detroit Red Wings. Lilja has also had stints in Florida and Los Angeles. He has posted 74 career points (15G-59A) in 478 career games. Lilja has also appeared in 53 career postseason contests.

Injuries to centers Chris Drury and Vinny Prospal forced the New York Rangers to open the 2010-11 season with 20-year-old rookie center Derek Stepan anchoring the team’s third line alongside veterans Ruslan Fedotenko and Sean Avery. Stepan responded well to the challenge, becoming just the fourth player in league history to record a hat trick in his National Hockey League debut during the Rangers’ 6-3 win over Buffalo on Oct. 9. Stepan’s historic night began when he deflected a Dan Girardi shot behind Ryan Miller midway through the first period. He later added goals in the second and third periods to become just the second player in Rangers history (Ron Murphy; Oct. 7, 1955; at Chicago) to record a hat Derek Stepan trick on opening night.

RON BURKLE Ron Burkle has now added a new arena — Pittsburgh’s CONSOL Energy Center — to his tremendous list of accomplishments in the business world. Burkle, widely recognized as one of the preeminent investors in retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 12th season as co-owner of the Penguins. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his role in negotiations for the new arena deal. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is co-chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League and the Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy. He has received numerous awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year and the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year award.
MARIO LEMIEUX Mario Lemieux will always be remembered for the magic he created on the ice, but one of the crowning achievements of his remarkable business career came this season — the opening of CONSOL Energy Center, home of the Penguins and Pittsburgh’s new multi-purpose entertainment venue. Even before the reality of CONSOL Energy Center, Lemieux and coowner Ron Burkle had turned the Penguins into a premier NHL franchise. The Penguins have been named No. 1 in Fan Relations by ESPN the Magazine, sold out a team-record 166 straight games, sold out every suite for three straight seasons and established records for local television ratings, merchandise sales and website hits. Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVPs trophies and two Conn Smythe Trophies as playoff MVP, in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $8 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org. Mario, his wife Nathalie and their four children live in Sewickley. For extended bios please visit pittsburghpenguins.com 10
DAVID MOREHOUSE Pittsburgh native David Morehouse was named CEO of the Penguins in September and leads the team into an exciting new era at CONSOL Energy Center. Morehouse had served as team president since 2007, overseeing ticket sales, marketing, corporate sales, communications and brand development, as well as representing the team in corporate relations and governmental affairs. Under his leadership the Penguins have become one of the top organizations in professional sports — ranked No. 1 in Fan Relations and No. 5 overall as a franchise among 122 pro teams in North America by ESPN The Magazine. As team president, Morehouse implemented a brand strategy that featured a new commitment to marketing, fan interaction and community outreach, as well as a targeted focus on the team’s young fan demographic. Morehouse grew up in the Beechview section on Pittsburgh. He attended the Community College of Allegheny County and Duquesne University, and received a master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. He and his wife, Vanessa, have three children and live in Bell Acres. For extended bios please visit pittsburghpenguins.com

RAY SHERO Ray Shero, 48, was named GM of the Pittsburgh Penguins on May 25, 2006. His fresh ideas and calm but firm management style helped transform the Penguins from a team that did not qualify for the playoffs in 2005-06 to one that reached the Stanley Cup Final in 2007-08 and won the Cup in 2008-09. One of his first acts as GM was to declare a goal of building a team that could compete for championships on a yearly basis. He revamped the team’s hockey operations staff and structure, upgraded professional and amateur scouting, added a team operations director and opened new lines of communication with the business side of the organization. Ray built his hockey sense and managerial style during 14 seasons as an NHL assistant general manager — six with the Ottawa Senators and eight with the Nashville Predators. Shero played college hockey at St. Lawrence University and was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in 1982. He spent seven years as a player agent before making the transition to the front office. The native of St. Paul, Minn. is actively involved with USA Hockey and is a member of the USA Hockey National Team Advisory Group. Ray and his wife, Karen, and their two sons reside in Upper St. Clair.
JASON BOTTERILL Jason Botterill enters his second full season as assistant general manager after being promoted to his current position on May 22, 2009 by general manager Ray Shero. As assistant GM, Botterill works closely with Shero on all hockeyrelated matters, including scouting, player development and contract negotiations. He also manages hockey operations and acts as GM for the club’s top-minor league affiliate, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League. Prior to his promotion, Botterill, 34, worked two seasons as director of hockey administration with the Penguins. Before joining Pittsburgh, Botterill worked with NHL Central Registry and also scouted for the Dallas Stars. Botterill was a first-round draft pick (20th overall) by Dallas in 1994 and played 88 NHL games over six seasons with Dallas, Atlanta, Calgary and Buffalo. A native of Edmonton who grew up in Winnipeg, Botterill played four seasons at the University of Michigan, where he earned his MBA, and helped lead the Wolverines to the NCAA title in 1996. He also played for Team Canada at the World Junior Championships in 1994, 1995 and 1996, helping his team win gold medals in all three tournaments. He resides in Pittsburgh along with his wife, Andrea. For extended bios please visit pittsburghpenguins.com 14

DAN BYLSMA In just one-plus seasons behind the bench, Dan Bylsma has already become one of the most successful coaches in Penguins’ history. After being promoted to Penguins head coach in February 2009, Bylsma, 40, directed the team to its third Stanley Cup in franchise history — a feat previously accomplished by legendary coaches “Badger” Bob Johnson and Scott Bowman. In the process Bylsma became the 14th rookie head coach, and just the fourth in the past 50 years, to capture the Stanley Cup. Of those 14, only Montreal’s Al MacNeil (1970-71) took over mid-season. Bylsma played nine NHL seasons as a right winger with Los Angeles and Anaheim from 1995-2004. He played 429 NHL regular-season games, recording 19 goals and 62 points, and also played in the 2003 Stanley Cup Final with Anaheim. Bylsma was an assistant coach at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton for two seasons from 2006-08 and was named head coach at the start of the 2008-09 season. He went 35-16-1-2 in 54 games with WB/S before being promoted to Pittsburgh. He played four seasons of college hockey at Bowling Green. Dan and his wife, Mary Beth, have one son and reside in the North Hills.
TONY GRANATO Tony Granato, 46, begins his second season on the Penguins’ coaching staff. Granato, among his many responsibilities, works with the Penguins’ forwards and penalty killing units. He oversaw the NHL’s ninth-ranked penalty killing group with an 84.1-percent success rate, and second best on the road at 85.3 percent. Prior to joining the Penguins, Granato spent six seasons behind the bench for the Colorado Avalanche and served two stints as Avalanche head coach from 2002-04 and 2008-09. Granato compiled a 215-104-17-16 record and led Colorado to a Northwest Division title in 2003. Granato played 13 seasons in the NHL with the NY Rangers, Los Angeles and San Jose. In 1997, he was the recipient of the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy for overcoming a near career-ending brain injury. In 773 career games, the feisty forward posted 248 goals, 492 points and 1,425 penalty minutes. He appeared in 79 career postseason games and helped lead Los Angeles to a Stanley Cup Final berth in 1993. Granato played four years at the University of Wisconsin and was inducted into the Badgers’ Hall of Fame in 2000. Granato also played for the U.S. National team in 1987-88 and represented his country in the 1988 Olympic Games in Calgary. Tony and his wife, Linda, are the parents of four children and reside in the South Hills. For extended bios please visit pittsburghpenguins.com 16

TODD REIRDEN Todd Reirden, 39, joined Pittsburgh’s coaching staff on July 31, 2010 after coaching with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins the previous two seasons. Reirden, an NHL defenseman for parts of five seasons, works closely with the team’s defensemen. Reirden, completed his first full season as WB/S head coach in 200910, leading a young and inexperienced team to an impressive 41-34-2-3 record, finishing third in the East Division, and a berth in the Calder Cup playoffs. Prior to joining the Penguins organization, Reirden spent one season as an assistant coach with the Bowling Green Falcons (CCHA) — his alma mater. He was a teammate of Bylsma’s during the 1990-91 and 1991-92 seasons at Bowling Green. Selected by New Jersey in the 12th round (242nd overall) of the 1990 NHL Enrty Draft, Reirden played professionally for 13 seasons, retiring after the 2006-07 campaign with Graz EC of the Austrian Hockey League. He appeared in 183 NHL games with Edmonton, St. Louis, Atlanta and Phoenix, recording 46 points (11+35) and 181 penalty minutes. Todd and his wife, Shelby, have one son.
GILLES MELOCHE Former NHL goaltender Gilles Meloche is in his fifth season as the Penguins’ full-time goaltending coach and 25th with the organization. Meloche has been instrumental in developing Marc-Andre Fleury into a Stanley Cup-winning netminder. Meloche served as a Penguins scout from 1989-2006 and also doubled as a goaltending coach/consultant during much of that time. He was also part of the staff when the Penguins won Stanley Cups in 1991 and 1992. A native of Montreal, Quebec, Meloche spent 18 seasons as an NHL goaltender with Chicago, California, Cleveland, Minnesota and Pittsburgh. He played the final three seasons of his career in Pittsburgh following a 1985 trade. Meloche appeared in 788 NHL games during his career, posting a record of 270-351-131 with a 3.64 goals-against average. In 45 career playoff games, he posted a 21-19 record and a 3.48 goals-against average. Gilles and his wife, Sophie, reside in Pittsburgh. His son, Eric, is a pro player who was a member of the Penguins organization from 2000-04.

OUR NEW HOME CONSOL Energy Center opened in August, 2010 as Pittsburgh’s new multi-purpose entertainment venue — home of the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins as well as other professional and collegiate sports, concerts, children’s shows, skating shows and more. It replaces the old Civic Arena/ Mellon Arena, which had operated since 1961 and was home of the Penguins from their inception in CONSOL Energy Center represents an exciting new era for 1967. It was the oldest arena in the the city, the region and the Pittsburgh Penguins. National Hockey League. “CONSOL Energy Center represents an exciting new era for the city, the region and the Pittsburgh Penguins,” said David Morehouse, CEO of the hockey team. “With open concourses, comfortable seating, cutting-edge technology, a state-of-the-art scoreboard and sound system, and an extensive array of food and beverage options, it is a spectacular symbol for the Pittsburgh of the 21st century.” CONSOL Energy Center was completed on time and under budget, thanks to the combined efforts of architectural firms Populous and Astorino; the owner’s representative, ICON; the construction company, PJ Dick/Hunt; and the excellent construction workers and skilled trade workers of Western Pennsylvania. The new arena seats 18,087 for hockey, 19,000 for basketball and almost 20,000 for concerts. It is a green building and is the first NHL arena to attain LEED Gold certification. Even before its doors had opened, CONSOL Energy Center landed commitments from shows that would have bypassed the old arena — the 2012 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament first and second rounds, the 2013 NCAA Frozen Four, and back-to-back concerts by music legend Paul McCartney. McCartney, who first played Pittsburgh with the Beatles in 1964 but hadn’t performed here since 1990, christened the new arena with a grand opening concert on August 18, 2010. In its first season of operation, CONSOL Energy Center also will be home to the Pittsburgh Power of the Arena Football League — bringing indoor football back to the city for the first time in almost 20 years. A funding plan for the new arena project was completed in March, 2007, thanks to the combined efforts of Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell, Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato and Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl, among others. The Sports & Exhibition Authority owns the building on behalf of the city and county, and the Penguins have the lease. The new arena is managed by SMG, with Jay Roberts serving as general manager.

GAME NOTES THE SERIES Tonight the Penguins and Ottawa Senators meet for the first time since Pittsburgh eliminated the Senators in six games in the Eastern Conference quarterfinals last spring . That was the Penguins’ second consecutive first-round playoff victory over the Senators, who were swept by the Penguins during the 2008 playoffs . . . Given Ottawa’s first-round victory over Pittsburgh in 2007, these teams have faced each other in three of the last four playoff years . . . The Senators have had a decided edge in the regular-season recently, winning eight of the last 11 games between the teams . . . The Penguins are 2-4-1 in their last seven games against Ottawa . . . The teams split their series last season, with each team going 1-1 on home ice and each of the four games decided by at least three goals . Bill Guerin led the Penguins in scoring against the Senators with three goals and six points, while Chris Kelly, Mike Fisher and Nick Foligno each had four points for Ottawa . . . The Penguins were 16-for-17 on the penalty kill against Ottawa last season and are 24-for-25 (96 .0 percent) over their last six games against the Senators . The only Ottawa powerplay goal in that span was by Milan Michalek last Nov . 19 in Ottawa . . . The Penguins are just 1-2-2 in their last five home games against the Senators and 2-6-2 in their last 10 home games against them . . . The Senators have missed on 17 consecutive powerplay chances here in Pittsburgh during the regular season; their

COMRIE ADDS SKILL, VERSATILITY TO OFFENSIVE ATTACK
According to Crosby the addition of Comrie increases the Penguins’ chances of winning every night he’s in the lineup.
Over the course of his 10-year National Hockey League career, Mike Comrie has spent time with seven different teams, bouncing back and forth between drastically different locales, including the desert, western Canada, eastern Canada, Long Island and even Sweden. So the 30-year-old forward is no stranger to new teams. During the offseason, Comrie carefully examined all of his options as a free agent. But in the end, Comrie picked the team where he felt he had the best chance to get his name on the Stanley Cup. “I think there are a lot of skilled guys in this dressing room,” he said. “There are a lot of guys who are able to make plays. If we can all be on the same page and stick to our system, we will have a good chance to succeed.” During his first month in Pittsburgh, Comrie has experienced plenty of success. Throughout training camp and during the first few regular-season games, Comrie centered a line between Evgeni Malkin and Eric Tangradi. Recently, he has spent some time as the right wing on Sidney Crosby’s top line. After spending last season playing in his hometown of Edmonton, Comrie is excited for a chance to play with Crosby and Malkin. continued on page 47

“Sid and Geno both play the game at an elite level so there’s going to be lots of chances when you’re on the ice with those guys,” Comrie said. “Geno’s a guy that can hold onto the puck and draw players to him. So if you can get open then he’s able to find his linemates in the right position and there’s going to be a lot of opportunities.” Comrie’s linemates had similar praise for him. “He definitely makes the game easier for guys around him,” Tangradi said. “He’s very shifty and very smart with the puck, so once you learn how he plays, he’s going to find you in areas since he’s so smart.” Crosby said the addition of Comrie increases the Penguins’ chances of winning every night he’s in the lineup. “He’s pretty nifty with the puck and he makes some smart plays out there,” Crosby said. “That, combined with the experience he’s had, brings a lot to our team.” It helps that Comrie can play a variety of positions. When he is at center between Malkin and Tangradi, he is a scoring threat every time he steps on the ice. He credits some of that to Tangradi. “He’s a big body that goes to the net. If we’re able to cycle plays and get pucks to the net, we’re going to be successful,” Comrie said. Tangradi said he just tries to make room for Comrie and Malkin to make plays.
Eric Tangradi helps to create space and opportunities in front of the net for players like Comrie.

“They can use their speed and their skills on the outside,” Tangradi said. “So I think a guy like me creates space for him and Geno to give them opportunities in front of the net.” In addition to playing center, Comrie can also play the wing and is a presence on the power play. “He can play in a lot of different situations,” Crosby said. “He brings a lot of skill and we saw that on our power play, he did some really good things and made some skilled plays.” Perhaps no skilled play Comrie has made thus far matches the feat he turned in during his Penguins debut in the preseason opener on Sept. 22. While the first official goal at CONSOL Energy Center belongs to Philadelphia’s Danny Briere, it was Comrie who was the first player to put the puck in the net during a game. Against the Detroit Red Wings in the first-ever preseason hockey game at the new On Sept. 22 Mike Comrie was the first player to put the puck in arena, Comrie the net during a game at CONSOL Energy Center. batted his own rebound out of the air and past Chris Osgood just 1:21 into the first period to send the sellout crowd into a frenzy. “To get that opportunity was exciting for me,” Comrie said. “It was a fun game.” With players of Comrie’s skill level providing secondary scoring alongside Crosby and Malkin, there should be plenty more exciting moments like that throughout the season.

I feel
.
Ask a grieving child how they’re feeling and you may get a lot of answers. Or none at all. For many, finding the words to express their feelings can be difficult. But while finding the right words may not be easy, finding the right place to turn to for help can be. At the Caring Place, we’re here when grieving children need someone to listen, to talk, or to just sit and be. For more information about one of our peer support groups or to volunteer, call us today.

THE PENGUINS GAME VAULT OCTOBER 16, 2001 • PENGUINS 5, SENATORS 2 MELLON ARENA
© Getty Images
The Pittsburgh Penguins were in need of an early-season spark after opening the 2001-02 regular-season by dropping their first four games and replacing head coach Ivan Hlinka with Rick Kehoe. In an effort to shake up his troops, Kehoe promptly changed his lines around in advance of his first game behind the bench on Oct. 16 against the Ottawa Senators. Kehoe’s reshuffling of the deck led to 22-year-old rookie forward Toby Petersen, who had played all of 15 National Hockey League games to that point, joining Hall of Fame center Mario Lemieux and Martin Straka on the team’s top line. Petersen joining Lemieux on the top line was actually ironic in a sense Toby Petersen torched the Senators for because 10 months earlier it was Petersen’s his first career hat trick in a 5-2 Penguins re-assignment to the Penguins’ top minorvictory at Mellon Arena. league affiliate in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton which opened a roster spot for Lemieux following his triumphant return from retirement. Kehoe’s surprise move paid immediate dividends as Petersen torched the Senators for his first career hat trick in a 5-2 Penguins victory at Mellon Arena. The Straka-Lemieux-Petersen unit didn’t need long to strike as Straka set Petersen up for goal No. 1 of the evening just 30 seconds into the game. Ottawa’s Todd White tallied 3:59 into the second period to tie the game at 1-1, but that score didn’t hold up for long as Petersen gave the Penguins the lead for good just 32 seconds later by converting a Lemieux feed for his second goal of the night, helping to spark a four-goal outburst for Pittsburgh. Robert Lang gave the Penguins a two-goal cushion when he found the back of the cage at the 14-minute mark of the second period. Petersen ended any thoughts the Senators had of making a comeback, and finished off his hat trick in the process, by scoring again off of a Lemieux setup just 1:03 minutes after Lang’s goal to make it 4-1. In addition to Petersen’s hat trick, the Penguins also received two goals from Lang, three assists from Lemieux and 37 saves in goal from Johan ‘Moose’ Hedberg. The 5-2 victory over the Senators began a 6-3-1 start behind the bench for Kehoe.

BYLSMA’S POWER-PLAY GOAL IS POETRY IN MOTION Although it’s been less than two full years since Dan Bylsma was hired to coach the Penguins he’s already come to grips with a couple of western Pennsylvania absolutes. No. 1, the dumbest guy in Pittsburgh is the Steelers’ offensive coordinator, because it’s seemingly incredibly obvious to everyone but Bruce Arians that when the Steelers pass they should run and vice-versa. And No. 2, the seconddumbest guy in the region is the one running the Penguins’ power play. When the Penguins score with the man-advantage, it’s of course attributable to the skill and precision of a Sidney Crosby or an Evgeni Malkin. When they don’t, it’s because they weren’t properly deployed or otherwise properly coached. Period. Dan Bylsma added running the power-play unit to his list of responsibilities this season Bylsma understands as much, he gets it. But he added running the power-play unit to his list of responsibilities this season, anyway. “It pained me to see Mike Yeo’s name dragged through the mud when the players thought he was a good power-play coach and respected him as a power-play coach and what he brought to the table,” Bylsma said. “If someone’s going to take that hit I want it to be me. “I’m OK with [the players] being really great when [the power play] is good and me being really dumb when it’s bad. That’s why you sign up for the job.” Yeo left Bylsma’s staff to become the head coach of the AHL’s Houston Aeros after last season, which left a void with the Penguins regarding who would run the power play this season. Bylsma’s response was to assume control and pick up where the Penguins left off last season, expanding and altering the concepts the Penguins initially adopted last January. At that point it became less about positioning and more about getting skilled players an opportunity to create in space. The new approach worked well enough that Bylsma became determined to keep moving forward with it even though the Penguins parted ways with power-play quarterback Sergei Gonchar. continued on page 99

QUALITY IS ALL WE THINK ABOUT. THAT AND QUALITY.
THINK ABOUT IT. First, we pioneered the 10-year/100,000-mile warranty. Then, we led the way with Hyundai Assurance. Now, the EPA has just named Hyundai the most fuel-efficient carmaker in America.* Sure, it’s another important milestone reached, but it’s also a reminder to stay focused on whatever lies ahead. For more on Hyundai, visit Hyundai.com

THE RICHARDS continued from page 97 GROUP TRG JOB #: Bylsma, in other words, decided to become the “offensive coordinator” even though he HER-10-0010 CLIENT: knew his Ben Roethlisberger wasn’t coming back. Hyundai “Sergei Gonchar was a fantastic player,” Bylsma said. “But with the group we have we JOB NAME: Quality/Pittsburgh can be a good power play. We don’t need to have another Sergei Gonchar. Penguins Program Ad “We have some guys that have Ben Roethlisberger’s type of demeanor on the field on TRIM: 5.375" X 8.5" the ice. We have No. 87 and No. 71 and we’re giving them the puck in attacking modes LIVE: 4.375" Xand 7.5" giving them the chance to make reads and be who they can be. BLEED: “We have two guys playing the exact same position on each side of the point guy. You 5.625" X 8.75" can call them flankers if you’d like. You’ll see them both doing the same things, coming up COLOR: CMYK LS: 133/SWOP and attacking when they get the puck.” INSERTION DATE: Bylsma’s power play opened with Alex Goligoski as the “point guy,” operating 2011 Football Publications whenever possible from the center of the ice. Malkin initially stations himself on Goligoski’s FOR QUESTIONS CALL: left, at the position that used to be referred to as the “left point” but is no longer so Karen Newman designated by the Penguins. 214-891-5875
From there it’s supposed to get creative. “It could be two defensemen out there but there’s only one guy taking the puck to the middle,” Bylsma explained. “When you see Malkin at the [center] point and a defenseman tipping the puck in for a goal that won’t bother me.” Although the new approach is “similar to” and has “a lot of the same concepts” as the power play the Penguins ran during the second half of last season there are subtle differences. “There’s better structure to it, better retrieval of pucks and a better idea of how we can attack,” Bylsma said. “You’ll see movement and motion and getting the puck to guys and allowing them to attack and the other guys to read off of it. “There are some fundamentals to it.” If it all looks and sounds a little familiar that’s probably because it should. Bylsma’s intial power plan started with Malkin and Goligoski. “There’s not a lot of magic or inventing of something new,” Bylsma maintained. “It’s homework from the summer, and [assistant coach] Tony Granato did a lot of the homework, and looking at different teams, successful power plays, successful parts of power plays, and then bringing it to our team, bringing it to our players. “[Detroit Red Wings head coach] Mike Babcock [who coached Bylsma in Anaheim] always said ‘it’s R & D when it comes to coaching,’ and that’s ‘rob’ and ‘do’ [as opposed to “research and development”]. It’s not just one team’s power play. It’s three or four or five of the top power plays in the league over the years. “We’ve said, ‘Hey, this is what they do well, let’s add it to ours.’” Mike Prisuta is the sports director for WDVE-FM and the sports anchor for “Jim, Randy & the DVE Morning Show.”

LATROBE SEASON PREVIEW Latrobe is one of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League’s most dominant teams, a well-earned acclaim given their great success over the past several seasons. During the past three years, Latrobe has won three Class AA Penguins Cups and three Class AA Pennsylvania state championships, an impressive achievement to say the least. Last year they did it with almost an entirely new team. This season, the Wildcats will have to go through a re-building phase almost identical to last year’s. Latrobe is going to have to do without nine players from their championship team, ironically the same number they lost last season. But if these new faces generate the same outcome as last season’s group, Latrobe has nothing to worry about. “We are able to have great players come up from freshman or JV teams that are strong and the talent just keeps on coming every year,” Latrobe head coach Dan Ridder said. “I think we’re going to improve throughout the year. It’s going to be a matter of the veterans who have been there before leading the way and setting an example for the players this year coming in.” As the reigning Class AA Penguins Cup Champion, last season’s victory may have been a little sweeter given it was the last championship game held at Mellon Arena. However, this season holds something just as special being that it is the first time that a Penguins Cup game will be held in the brand new CONSOL Energy Center. “Everybody wants to get back and win that Penguins Cup again,” Ridder said. “We want to see what CONSOL Energy Center is like to play in.” By winning the state championship last season, Latrobe put its name in the record books by becoming only the sixth team in Pennsylvania history to win three consecutive state championships — a feat they want to top this season by winning a fourth. “The ultimate goal is to win another Penguins Cup and another state championship,” Ridder said. “I keep saying to our players the target on our back is three times as big this year. Everyone knows what it takes to get there. It’s a matter of how well we can form as a team throughout the year.” With Latrobe holding one of the PIHL’s most impressive resumes, they are a team to keep an eye on this season and a strong contender to make another long run in the month of March. 103

NEW COACH BRINGS SAME SUCCESS TO WB/S Fifteen years ago, John Hynes was celebrating a national championship with his Boston University Terriers teammates. This past summer, he had a chance to join that team for a reunion in Massachusetts. Now, Hynes has another reunion to enjoy — with many of the players he helped coach last season in northeastern Pennsylvania. Only this time, he is the one running the show. Meet the seventh head coach in Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton Penguins history. Upon the promotion of Todd Reirden to Pittsburgh Penguins’ assistant coach this summer, John Hynes Hynes was charged with taking over the head coaching reins on July 31. Like Reirden, who took over for Dan Bylsma, time was precious. But for Hynes, he never felt rushed, nor did he feel pressure. He was quick to credit the success of his predecessors. “I think I’ve had a great model that’s been in front of me starting with the tradition of the most recent coaches, with Todd Richards, Dan Bylsma, and Todd Reirden,” Hynes said. “The culture that’s been set up with the organization has put good, passionate people in positions to work, and they let them work. We have a good template as to how we want to play, how we communicate with players, and how we communicate as a coaching staff from Pittsburgh to Wilkes-Barre to Wheeling. Last year was great. Todd and I had a great relationship working together, and he afforded me a great responsibility as far as working under him. I think it’s been a great transition coming in. Now it’s time to continue the tradition that’s been set before me.” Part of that tradition has the Penguins defined as a playoff contender year after year. It was by no accident that Wilkes-Barre/Scranton has made the postseason for eight consecutive years, which is tied for the longest streak in the American Hockey League. But Penguins fans want more, and deservedly so: the elusive Calder Cup. The team is averaging one trip to the finals every four years. If you believe in patterns, Wilkes-Barre will make that trip to the “dance” this season. With offseason signings like the Penguins made, that theorem can be proven. But does a brandnew head coach feel any extra pressure, having to coach a new group of players brimming with talent? “Absolutely not,” Hynes pointed out. “One of the greatest things about being able to work with this team is having great players and great character. As a coach continued on page 117

you want players who have great hockey minds. It is exciting to be able to have those guys in place, and to have their talent and work ethic at your hands. But it is my job to help them reach their goals of where they want to go as a team and as individuals. I’m excited about the kind of guys we’re going to have in the room.” Hynes was also quick to point out that this team’s success is not just riding on players like Brett Sterling, Andrew Hutchinson, Corey Potter and Ryan Craig, three of the most notable offseason signings in Penguins history. It also rides on the success of players who have carved their roots here a few years ago, as well as the rookies of the 2009-10 season. “This team has excellent players coming back, as well as excellent players coming in,” Hynes added. “Players like Joe Vitale, Zach Sill, Robert Bortuzzo, Brian Strait, and Brad Thiessen had opportunities to get better, and they did. The team also has that core of players like Tim Wallace, Mark Letestu, Nick Johnson, Dustin Jeffrey and John Curry who have been here a little longer and have also continued to build their success.” Hynes was also quick to point out that a team can be built with all the talent in the world on paper, but talent alone does not win championships. One of the signs visible to all of the players as they exit their locker room to hit the ice reads “Will you get better today?” Hynes believes that any 50-goal scorer, any defenseman with a plus-30 rating, or any goaltender with a 1.50 goals-against average all have room to get better. His resume, complete with six straight IIHF medals during his tenure within the USA Hockey National Team Development Program, shows Hynes’ commitment to making players of all caliber get better. With John Hynes at the helm in this 12th season of Penguins hockey, expect this team to get better. Expect this team to contend. Expect this team to succeed.

On January 1, 2008, in a game for the ages at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Orchard Park, NY, the Penguins and Sabres took to the great outdoors … and the NHL Winter Classic was born. A National Hockey League attendance record setting crowd of 71,217 witnessed as the Penguins prevailed, 2-1. Sidney Crosby’s shootout-winner amid the snowfall turned the final page on the game’s storybook ending. The success of the 2008 NHL Winter Classic led to it becoming an annual event played on New Year’s Day in a different NHL city. Here’s a summary of the matchups and locations for each game.

RECOGNIZING THOSE WHO EXCEL IN THE FIGHT AGAINST CANCER
On any ordinary game night, black and gold are the colors of choice throughout the CONSOL Energy Center. However, if you look more closely tonight, you will see another shade as lavender highlights the arena, representing how “Hockey Fights Cancer” tonight, and how Pittsburgh fights cancer daily. The University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute (UPCI), a partner in cancer care with UPMC Cancer Centers, is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. Over the years, UPCI and UPMC Cancer Centers have grown from a simple vision of just a handful of people to now having more than one thousand employees, 38 locations, and being named one of 40 “Comprehensive Cancer Centers” across the United States, as designated by the National Cancer Institute. As one of western Pennsylvania’s top centers for cancer care and research, UPCI and UPMC Cancer Centers have played a major role in developing new strategies for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. “We’ve come a long way in 25 years,” says John Kirkwood, MD, one of UPCI’s original employees who still works there. “Thanks to advances in scientific discovery, we are moving closer to personalizing cancer therapies that more accurately target cancer and improve patient outcomes. Results from these pivotal advances offer encouragement, but there is still much work to be done.” UPCI and UPMC Cancer Centers remain at the forefront of innovative cancer treatment and research that impacts cancer patients throughout western Pennsylvania. Twenty-five years of physician teamwork and research have made it possible for each patient to not only get the best, most cutting-edge care available, but a strong support system as well. UPMC Cancer Centers salutes three cancer survivors who are in attendance at tonight’s game. They include Barb Bowser of Murrysville, who first discovered she had non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma six years ago; Mike Dvorsky of Jeannette, who was diagnosed with an adenocarcinoma of the appendix six years ago; and Dominick Spagnola of Leechburg, who was diagnosed with esophageal cancer two and a half years ago. These courageous individuals are an inspiration, and they symbolize the thousands of other patients who continue in their personal battles against cancer. So, when cheering for the Penguins tonight, stop and take some time to recognize these brave individuals and proudly wear your Hockey Fights Cancer t-shirt, which symbolizes the progress being made in the fight against all cancer diseases.

PENS PROFILE MARK LETESTU
Mark Letestu is a 25-year-old NHL rookie who, given a shot at the big time, has devised a formula to stay there: Letestu does everything the coaches say. If it’s systematic, it’s automatic. Letestu knows where to be and what to do. So far, it’s paying off. Letestu got two goals in the Penguins’ first three games, including the game-winner Oct. 11 at New Jersey. He had already been elevated from the third line to the second. The Alberta native was skating a regular shift with Evgeni Malkin and seeing time on the power play. “The best asset Mark Letestu brings is his smarts in playing the game,” said coach Dan Bylsma. Assistant coach Tony Granato has been working closely with Letestu. “Tony wants me to be a guy that’s strong in the face-off circle,” said Letestu. “He wants me to be a guy that’s going to provide some offense, to push the top six [forwards]. If they don’t get it done, there’s somebody to push them to do more.” Letestu said that before he became one of the top six. He debuted on Malkin’s line in the win over the Devils. Letestu’s first goal of the season came in the Penguins’ 3-2 home loss to Montreal on Oct. 9. Letestu tallied at 8:42 of the third period to give the Penguins a 2-1 lead, but the Canadiens netted at 17:48 and 18:12 of the period to steal the win. It was nonetheless a big moment for Letestu, who supported the Canadiens as a youth. “This was my team growing up, and the game was on Hockey Night in Canada,” said Letestu. “It would have been nice for it to be the winner, but it wasn’t meant to be. Hopefully, I’ll score a lot more. “I’m sure mom and dad were thrilled back home.” Letestu’s goal against Montreal wasn’t spectacular, but it was smooth. Matt Cooke found Letestu breaking toward the left post, and his wrist shot slid under goalie Carey Price. “That’s something we’re working on,” said Letestu. “I was just driving through the middle, and [Cooke] made a great pass. I tried to go high but the puck went low, and it ended up in the net. I’ll take it anyway I can get it. “It’s unfortunate [to lose]. Tonight we were in a good position. Some of the details in our game are kind of slipping right now. It’s something we’ve got to clean up.” Letestu was initially set to center Cooke and winger Arron Asham, then Asham was injured before the season’s start. Letestu said he would enjoy playing between those two. “I know they bring energy,” said the 5-foot-11, 195-pounder. “I try to put pucks in areas for them to be successful. I’d probably be the most under-control person on that line. I’d
140
let them do what they do and try to find some open space for them.” Letestu moved to Malkin’s line at New Jersey. Letestu netted what proved to be the winner at 2:32 of the second period, deflecting home a Paul Martin shot for a power-play tally. The Penguins won, 3-1, and Letestu got the game’s No. 2 star. The Penguins had some trouble scoring goals early, burying just seven pucks in their first three games. Alex Goligoski’s goal against the Devils marked the first time the Penguins had scored first this season, or in the first period. “We might be pressing,” Letestu said. “Maybe it’s the new building. We might have guys squeezing their sticks a little bit. We hit lots of posts [in the Oct. 7 opener at home] against Philadelphia. That’s the way the breaks go. We’re going to end up with seven goals some night.”
