HATCHER HONORED Former Penguins defenseman Kevin Hatcher was rewarded for an outstanding playing career by being inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame on Oct. 21 at HSBC Arena in Buffalo. Hatcher was enshrined along with his younger brother, Derian, former 50-goal scorer Jeremy Roenick, five-time U.S. Olympic hockey team physician Dr. V. George Nagobads and longtime USA Hockey administrator Art Berglund. Hatcher spent three seasons with the Penguins from Derian and Kevin Hatcher 1996-99, posting 140 points (45G-95A) in 220 games. The five-time NHL All-Star — including one appearance as a Penguin in 1996-97 — added eight points (4G-4A) in 24 postseason contests with Pittsburgh. Hatcher becomes the 12th member of the Penguins organization to be elected to the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame.

HOSSA LEADS WAY The defending Stanley Cup Champion Chicago Blackhawks have caught fire since opening the season 1-2-1. As of Oct. 21, the Blackhawks had won four straight games to find themselves in a familiar spot — the top of the Central Division. Leading the charge for Chicago is former Penguins right winger Marian Hossa. The 31-year-old Slovak native exploded Marian Hossa for seven goals and 11 points through the Hawks’ first eight games, both league-leading figures. Last spring, Hossa captured his first-ever Stanley Cup in his third consecutive Cup Final appearance (2010, Chicago; 2009, Detroit; 2008, Pittsburgh).

Four-time Stanley Cup Champion Kirk Maltby retired on Oct. 12 following a successful 16-year playing career which included two-plus seasons in Edmonton and the past 13-and-a-half years in Detroit. The 37-year-old forward attended the Red Wings training camp on a two-way contract, but he elected to retire rather than accept an assignment to Detroit’s top minor-league affiliate in Grand Rapids. Maltby, who captured Stanley Cups with the Kirk Maltby Wings in 1997, 1998, 2002 and 2008, was a member of the Wings’ famed ‘Grind Line’ with Kris Draper and Darren McCarty. Maltby retires having posted 260 career points (128G-132A) in 1,072 career contests.

RON BURKLE Ron Burkle has now added a new arena — Pittsburgh’s CONSOL Energy Center — to his tremendous list of accomplishments in the business world. Burkle, widely recognized as one of the preeminent investors in retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 12th season as co-owner of the Penguins. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his role in negotiations for the new arena deal. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is co-chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League and the Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy. He has received numerous awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year and the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year award.

MARIO LEMIEUX Mario Lemieux will always be remembered for the magic he created on the ice, but one of the crowning achievements of his remarkable business career came this season — the opening of CONSOL Energy Center, home of the Penguins and Pittsburgh’s new multi-purpose entertainment venue. Even before the reality of CONSOL Energy Center, Lemieux and coowner Ron Burkle had turned the Penguins into a premier NHL franchise. The Penguins have been named No. 1 in Fan Relations by ESPN the Magazine, sold out a team-record 166 straight games, sold out every suite for three straight seasons and established records for local television ratings, merchandise sales and website hits. Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVPs trophies and two Conn Smythe Trophies as playoff MVP, in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $8 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org. Mario, his wife Nathalie and their four children live in Sewickley. For extended bios please visit pittsburghpenguins.com 10

DAVID MOREHOUSE Pittsburgh native David Morehouse was named CEO of the Penguins in September and leads the team into an exciting new era at CONSOL Energy Center. Morehouse had served as team president since 2007, overseeing ticket sales, marketing, corporate sales, communications and brand development, as well as representing the team in corporate relations and governmental affairs. Under his leadership the Penguins have become one of the top organizations in professional sports — ranked No. 1 in Fan Relations and No. 5 overall as a franchise among 122 pro teams in North America by ESPN The Magazine. As team president, Morehouse implemented a brand strategy that featured a new commitment to marketing, fan interaction and community outreach, as well as a targeted focus on the team’s young fan demographic. Morehouse grew up in the Beechview section on Pittsburgh. He attended the Community College of Allegheny County and Duquesne University, and received a master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. He and his wife, Vanessa, have three children and live in Bell Acres. For extended bios please visit pittsburghpenguins.com

RAY SHERO Ray Shero, 48, was named GM of the Pittsburgh Penguins on May 25, 2006. His fresh ideas and calm but firm management style helped transform the Penguins from a team that did not qualify for the playoffs in 2005-06 to one that reached the Stanley Cup Final in 2007-08 and won the Cup in 2008-09. One of his first acts as GM was to declare a goal of building a team that could compete for championships on a yearly basis. He revamped the team’s hockey operations staff and structure, upgraded professional and amateur scouting, added a team operations director and opened new lines of communication with the business side of the organization. Ray built his hockey sense and managerial style during 14 seasons as an NHL assistant general manager — six with the Ottawa Senators and eight with the Nashville Predators. Shero played college hockey at St. Lawrence University and was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in 1982. He spent seven years as a player agent before making the transition to the front office. The native of St. Paul, Minn. is actively involved with USA Hockey and is a member of the USA Hockey National Team Advisory Group. Ray and his wife, Karen, and their two sons reside in Upper St. Clair.

JASON BOTTERILL Jason Botterill enters his second full season as assistant general manager after being promoted to his current position on May 22, 2009 by general manager Ray Shero. As assistant GM, Botterill works closely with Shero on all hockeyrelated matters, including scouting, player development and contract negotiations. He also manages hockey operations and acts as GM for the club’s top-minor league affiliate, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League. DAN BYLSMA In just one-plus seasons behind the bench, Dan Bylsma has already become one of the most successful coaches in Penguins’ history. After being promoted to Penguins head coach in February 2009, Bylsma, 40, directed the team to its third Stanley Cup in franchise history — a feat previously accomplished by legendary coaches “Badger” Bob Johnson and Scott Bowman. In the process Bylsma became the 14th rookie head coach, and just the fourth in the past 50 years, to capture the Stanley Cup. Of those 14, only Montreal’s Al MacNeil (1970-71) took over mid-season. Bylsma played nine NHL seasons as a right winger with Los Angeles and Anaheim from 1995-2004. He played 429 NHL regular-season games, recording 19 goals and 62 points, and also played in the 2003 Stanley Cup Final with Anaheim. Bylsma was an assistant coach at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton for two seasons from 2006-08 and was named head coach at the start of the 2008-09 season. He went 35-16-1-2 in 54 games with WB/S before being promoted to Pittsburgh. He played four seasons of college hockey at Bowling Green. Dan and his wife, Mary Beth, have one son and reside in the North Hills.

TONY GRANATO Tony Granato, 46, begins his second season on the Penguins’ coaching staff. Granato, among his many responsibilities, works with the Penguins’ forwards and penalty killing units. He oversaw the NHL’s ninth-ranked penalty killing group with an 84.1-percent success rate, and second best on the road at 85.3 percent. Prior to joining the Penguins, Granato spent six seasons behind the bench for the Colorado Avalanche and served two stints as Avalanche head coach from 2002-04 and 2008-09. Granato compiled a 215-104-17-16 record and led Colorado to a Northwest Division title in 2003. Granato played 13 seasons in the NHL with the NY Rangers, Los Angeles and San Jose. In 1997, he was the recipient of the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy for overcoming a near career-ending brain injury. In 773 career games, the feisty forward posted 248 goals, 492 points and 1,425 penalty minutes. He appeared in 79 career postseason games and helped lead Los Angeles to a Stanley Cup Final berth in 1993. Granato played four years at the University of Wisconsin and was inducted into the Badgers’ Hall of Fame in 2000. Granato also played for the U.S. National team in 1987-88 and represented his country in the 1988 Olympic Games in Calgary. Tony and his wife, Linda, are the parents of four children and reside in the South Hills. For extended bios please visit pittsburghpenguins.com 16

TODD REIRDEN Todd Reirden, 39, joined Pittsburgh’s coaching staff on July 31, 2010 after coaching with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins the previous two seasons. Reirden, an NHL defenseman for parts of five seasons, works closely with the team’s defensemen. Reirden, completed his first full season as WB/S head coach in 200910, leading a young and inexperienced team to an impressive 41-34-2-3 record, finishing third in the East Division, and a berth in the Calder Cup playoffs. Prior to joining the Penguins organization, Reirden spent one season as an assistant coach with the Bowling Green Falcons (CCHA) — his alma mater. He was a teammate of Bylsma’s during the 1990-91 and 1991-92 seasons at Bowling Green. Selected by New Jersey in the 12th round (242nd overall) of the 1990 NHL Enrty Draft, Reirden played professionally for 13 seasons, retiring after the 2006-07 campaign with Graz EC of the Austrian Hockey League. He appeared in 183 NHL games with Edmonton, St. Louis, Atlanta and Phoenix, recording 46 points (11+35) and 181 penalty minutes. Todd and his wife, Shelby, have one son.

GILLES MELOCHE Former NHL goaltender Gilles Meloche is in his fifth season as the Penguins’ full-time goaltending coach and 25th with the organization. Meloche has been instrumental in developing Marc-Andre Fleury into a Stanley Cup-winning netminder. Meloche served as a Penguins scout from 1989-2006 and also doubled as a goaltending coach/consultant during much of that time. He was also part of the staff when the Penguins won Stanley Cups in 1991 and 1992. A native of Montreal, Quebec, Meloche spent 18 seasons as an NHL goaltender with Chicago, California, Cleveland, Minnesota and Pittsburgh. He played the final three seasons of his career in Pittsburgh following a 1985 trade. Meloche appeared in 788 NHL games during his career, posting a record of 270-351-131 with a 3.64 goals-against average. In 45 career playoff games, he posted a 21-19 record and a 3.48 goals-against average. Gilles and his wife, Sophie, reside in Pittsburgh. His son, Eric, is a pro player who was a member of the Penguins organization from 2000-04.

OUR NEW HOME CONSOL Energy Center opened in August, 2010 as Pittsburgh’s new multi-purpose entertainment venue — home of the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins as well as other professional and collegiate sports, concerts, children’s shows, skating shows and more. It replaces the old Civic Arena/ Mellon Arena, which had operated since 1961 and was home of the Penguins from their inception in CONSOL Energy Center represents an exciting new era for 1967. It was the oldest arena in the the city, the region and the Pittsburgh Penguins. National Hockey League. “CONSOL Energy Center represents an exciting new era for the city, the region and the Pittsburgh Penguins,” said David Morehouse, CEO of the hockey team. “With open concourses, comfortable seating, cutting-edge technology, a state-of-the-art scoreboard and sound system, and an extensive array of food and beverage options, it is a spectacular symbol for the Pittsburgh of the 21st century.” CONSOL Energy Center was completed on time and under budget, thanks to the combined efforts of architectural firms Populous and Astorino; the owner’s representative, ICON; the construction company, PJ Dick/Hunt; and the excellent construction workers and skilled trade workers of Western Pennsylvania. The new arena seats 18,087 for hockey, 19,000 for basketball and almost 20,000 for concerts. It is a green building and is the first NHL arena to attain LEED Gold certification. Even before its doors had opened, CONSOL Energy Center landed commitments from shows that would have bypassed the old arena — the 2012 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament first and second rounds, the 2013 NCAA Frozen Four, and back-to-back concerts by music legend Paul McCartney. McCartney, who first played Pittsburgh with the Beatles in 1964 but hadn’t performed here since 1990, christened the new arena with a grand opening concert on August 18, 2010. In its first season of operation, CONSOL Energy Center also will be home to the Pittsburgh Power of the Arena Football League — bringing indoor football back to the city for the first time in almost 20 years. A funding plan for the new arena project was completed in March, 2007, thanks to the combined efforts of Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell, Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato and Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl, among others. The Sports & Exhibition Authority owns the building on behalf of the city and county, and the Penguins have the lease. The new arena is managed by SMG, with Jay Roberts serving as general manager.

GAME NOTES THE SERIES

The Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers meet tonight for the third time in 23 days . This is the 251st all-time regular-season meeting between the teams, and this is the first time they have ever played three games in the month of October . . . The Flyers won the season opener here Oct . 7, 3-2, behind Claude Giroux’s short-handed goal and 29 saves from rookie Sergei Bobrovsky, thus ruining the Penguins’ first game at CONSOL Energy Center . . . The Penguins answered with a convincing 5-1 victory in Philadelphia on Oct . 16 as Sidney Crosby scored twice . Crosby has 26 goals — his most against one team — and 59 points in 34 career games against the Flyers . . . The Penguins are 13-5-0 in their last 18 games against the Flyers and 12-4-0 in their last 16 home games against Philadelphia, but they have lost three of their last five home games against them . . . Philadelphia has scored first in 10 of the last 12 meetings with Pittsburgh and 18 of the last 23 . The Flyers’ Daniel Briere has scored the first goal in each of the previous games this season . . . Evgeni Malkin has 15 goals and 40 points in 28 career games against Philadelphia . . . Philadelphia has

Sidney Crosby scored twice in the Penguins last meeting with the Flyers on Oct . 16 .

scored only six goals in its last four games against the Penguins . . . Pittsburgh has scored a power play goal in nine of its last 10 games against the Flyers (12-for-49, 24 .4 percent) and seven of its last eight home games against them (10-for-40, 25 .0 percent) . . . The Penguins are 86-130-30-4 in the series . . . The next game between the teams is Dec . 14 in Philadelphia, and their next game here — and last at CONSOL Energy Center during this regular season — is five months from tonight on March 29, 2011 .

THE PENGUINS This is not the Penguins’ favorite date on the calendar . They have played 16 games all-time on Oct . 29, and they are 1-13-2 in those games . The only victory on that date came in 1988 in one of the most unlikely places: Montreal . Rob Brown scored twice and Mario Lemieux had four points that night in a 5-4 victory over the Canadiens . The Penguins are 0-8-1 at home on this date, with an average margin of defeat of 2 .5 goals . . . Former Canadien Arron Asham was hoping to make his Penguins debut Wednesday night in Tampa Bay, where Pittsburgh concluded a three-game road trip after a 4-3 overtime victory in Nashville last Thursday and a 1-0 overtime loss in St . Louis last Saturday . . . The win over the Predators was the Penguins’ first there in almost 12 years, and the loss to the Blues was the first 1-0 overtime loss in team history . . . At the start of this week, the Penguins’ 5-3-1 record left them second in the Eastern Conference and fourth in the NHL’s overall standings . They had points in five straight games (4-0-1) before playing in Tampa Bay . . . As the week began, Pittsburgh had six of the top 54 scorers in the league (Crosby, Malkin, Mark Letestu, Kris Letang, Alex Goligoski and Paul Martin); three of the top seven defensemen in scoring (Letang, Goligoski and Martin); and the top rookie scorer (Letestu) At the start of the week Mark Letestu was the NHL’s top scoring rookie . . . . Crosby and Malkin both had five-game scoring streaks snapped in the loss to the Blues . . . The Penguins will play in Carolina tomorrow night to start a four-game road trip that also takes them to Dallas, Anaheim and Phoenix . Pittsburgh’s next home game is Nov . 10 against Boston . continued on page 32

COMMUNITY UPDATE PENGUINS ARE PROUD TO SUPPORT HOCKEY FIGHTS CANCER Fans probably noticed that their favorite team’s normal colors include a lavender accent as the NHL continues its annual Hockey Fights Cancer campaign throughout October. This league-wide initiative is held for the goal of raising awareness and funds for the fight against cancer. Each team selects an October home game to spotlight the Hockey Fights Cancer cause. On October 18, the Pittsburgh Penguins organization and their partners focused their energy to this end when the Penguins battled the Ottawa Senators. To kick off the Penguins HFC festivities, Trib Total Media hosted a ticket giveaway contest and donated $1 for each entry up to $2,500 and the Penguins matched all funds raised to benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Western Pennsylvania and West Virginia Chapter. OTHER ELEMENTS OF THE SPECIAL NIGHT INCLUDED: J

Fans who attended the game recieved a cancer awareness t-shirt courtesy of UPMC Cancer Centers.

J

Penguins players and other members of the organization donned this year’s Hockey Fights Cancer silk tie.

TONIGHT’S COMPETITORS ARE:

ROUND ONE HEAT ONE: MORGANTOWN BLADES SQUIRT 2 TEAM VS. ALLEGHENY BADGERS SQUIRT 4 TEAM The one-on-one competition features Mitch Rusiecki/Sydney Smith from Morgantown against Trent Lunden/Andrew Gorr from Allegheny. You can also view this and previously shown competitions at pittsburghpenguins.com.

On Sunday, October 10, sixteen youth hockey teams from the Pittsburgh Amateur Hockey League (PAHL) in the Squirt age group (age 9 - 10) participated in a shootout competition at CONSOL Energy Center. The event was videotaped to be shown in episodes at Penguins home games. The first round of competition featured heats between two teams striving to advance to the next round. Sixteen teams fielded five skaters shooting against the opposing team’s goalie. After each team competition, an individual shooter and goaltender squared off against the opposing team’s individual tandem for a one-on-one competition. Each winning team and pair of individuals advanced to the next round of eight teams/tandems. The format repeated as teams and individual pairs advanced through the quarter-final heats to move on to the semi-finals. Robust competition marked the semifinal round for teams and individual tandems. The remaining two teams and individual tandems then had to “leave it all on the ice” in vying for the championship. Early in the second intermission of each Penguins home game the various heats in the competition will be featured. Enjoy each episode.

GOLIGOSKI EXPLODES OUT OF THE GATE Alex Goligoski is off to another great start. Through the first seven games, Goligoski averaged a point per game and led all National Hockey League defenseman with three goals. Goligoski’s seven-game point streak is matched only by his seven-game point streak during the opening month of last season (Oct. 14-30), which is why Penguins head coach Dan Bylsma wasn’t too surprised that the guy they call “Goose” is hot out of the gate again. “I was maybe more surprised with last year’s start than this year’s start,” Bylsma said. “But he’s got unique skating ability and offensive ability.”

Alex Goligoski recorded the overtime winner on Oct. 15 giving the Penguins their first victory in CONSOL Energy Center.

“It’s gone pretty well,” said Goligoski, who was quick to pass off credit to the rest of the team. “We’re winning again, and we’re finding our game.” Part of the reason Goligoski is seeing more ice time and getting more chances to score is because of injuries to two of the Penguins’ top blueliners, Brooks Orpik and Zbynek Michalek. “I’ve played a little more than I would have [without the injuries], and I’ve played in more situations,” Goligoski said. “I’d like to play that much in the future. It’s a really good experience to play in every situation.” One of the situations in which Goligoski is trusted is the power play. When Sergei Gonchar departed Pittsburgh last summer during free agency, it left a hole to fill on the man-advantage. Goligoski stepped up to man the point on the top power play unit. He knew he would likely see more time on the power play, so he worked on his shot over the summer. continued on page 47

“I’m always working on my shot, maybe with a different balance and getting it off quick, and making sure I’m putting hard shots on net,” Goligoski said. “Maybe they will go in or a forward will tip it in. I’m just concentrating on getting pucks in.” “I think the thing he’s done the best this year is playing in a new spot on the power play, thanks to his smarts and his ability to read the power play,” Bylsma said. “I think his shot now is a threat, more so than three years ago. He really worked on that hard.” Bylsma coached Goligoski three years ago when he was manning the blue line in the American Hockey League with the Penguins’ top minor-league affiliate in Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton, so he has watched Goligoski develop into one of the Penguins’ more reliable defenseman. “You might not have said at the beginning of the year that this guy’s got a threat with his shot, but I think now you would,” Bylsma said. “That’s something he’s added to his offense.” It helps that Goligoski has been paired up with a player he is comfortable with, Ben Lovejoy. “We turned pro together, so we’ve played together for a lot of that time, so it’s easy,” Goligoski said. “He talks a lot, so I always know what he’s doing on the ice and I think he knows what I’m doing.” “[Goligoski] is so good in all facets of

the game, and he’s fun to play with,” Lovejoy said. “He’s obviously an incredibly gifted offensive player.” Not only did Goligoski and Lovejoy turn pro and play together in WB/S, they also lived together. “We were roommates, too,” Lovejoy said. “We lived together for a year. So I’m certainly comfortable with him both on and off the ice. I think there’s definitely some chemistry and it will hopefully only get better.” While the defensive corps is getting healthier, Lovejoy cautioned that he and Goligoski can’t try to do too much to compensate for injuries. “You just play your game,” Lovejoy said. “All of us can’t do too much. We want to focus on playing our game to the best of our ability and if I execute my game, and everyone else does that too, then we’re going to be okay, no matter who we’re missing.” Goligoski agreed. He said that sticking to the plan is the key to keeping up his earlyseason success. “I’m going to keep going,” he said. “Hopefully, I’ll stay healthy and I’ll just keep working.”

Goligoski and Ben Lovejoy have developed good chemistry while playing together this season.

I feel

.

Ask a grieving child how they’re feeling and you may get a lot of answers. Or none at all. For many, finding the words to express their feelings can be difficult. But while finding the right words may not be easy, finding the right place to turn to for help can be. At the Caring Place, we’re here when grieving children need someone to listen, to talk, or to just sit and be. For more information about one of our peer support groups or to volunteer, call us today.

THE PENGUINS GAME VAULT APRIL 25, 1989 • PENGUINS 10, FLYERS 7 CIVIC ARENA Thanks to the presence of 100-point scorers Mario Lemieux, Robbie Brown and Paul Coffey helping to comprise the roster, the 1988-89 Pittsburgh Penguins could light up the scoreboard like few teams in the National Hockey League that season. They needed every bit of that dynamic offense when they hosted the Philadelphia Flyers in Game Five of the 1989 Patrick Division Finals at the Civic Arena on April 25, 1989. With both teams battling to take control Lemieux recorded a natural hat trick in the of a series that was deadlocked at 2-2, first period on his way to a NHL postseason Lemieux had one of the top performances record-tying, five-goal, eight-point performance. of his career to help lead the Penguins to a 10-7 victory which put Pittsburgh within one victory of eliminating the rival Flyers. Lemieux recorded a natural hat trick in the first period on his way to a NHL postseason record-tying, five-goal, eight-point performance. Fans barely had a chance to buy some nachos and get in their seats before Lemieux tallied twice within a 1:30 minute span less than four minutes into the game. By the 6:55 mark of the opening frame, Lemieux had scored again on a wraparound and the Penguins were up by a 3-0 count. Bob Errey staked Pittsburgh to a 4-0 lead 12 seconds after Lemieux’s goal, before Philadelphia finally got on the board on a tally by former Penguin Mike Bullard. Lemieux added a fourth goal at 17:09 and Troy Loney lit the lamp 35 seconds later to put the Penguins in front, 6-1, and chase Flyers netminder Ron Hextall. Philadelphia placed Hextall back into the net at the beginning of the second period, and the floodgates remained open. Kevin Stevens scored 1:43 into the period and Brown added a pair of tallies around two Flyers goals to put Pittsburgh up 9-3. Brown’s second goal is one of the most famous highlights in Penguins history — it was the goal where Hextall chased Brown around the ice with his stick after taking exception to Brown’s windmill celebration. Philadelphia made things interesting with four third-period goals to get within 9-7 of the Penguins, but Lemieux finished off the Flyers by adding an empty-net goal for his fifth tally of the game at 19:33 to close out the 10-7 victory.

PENGUINS DEFENSEMEN CREATING OFFENSE In the wake of their overtime triumph in Nashville the Penguins found themselves in possession of three of the NHL’s top four point-producing defenseman. Colorado’s John-Michael Liles led the league among blueliners at the time with nine points (0+9), but right behind were Kris Letang with eight (2+6) and sevenpoint scorers Alex Goligoski (3+4) and Paul Martin (1+6). Although it was still early, the gamewinning goal Letang had scored to beat the Predators on Oct. 21 had been yet another indication of just how productive the Penguins’ defensemen are becoming. It was also another example of how head coach Dan Bylsma expects the defensemen and forwards to work Kris Letang’s game-winning goal against the Predators together in making the Penguins a team on Oct. 21 was an indication of how productive the capable of generating offense from just Penguins’ defensemen are becoming. about anywhere. “As a group of five guys on the ice, including our defensemen, we want our defensemen to be active,” Bylsma explained. “We want them to be active coming out of the D-zone. We want them to be active in the offensive zone. That’s a reflection of seeing them get some points. “They’ve gotten them all over the ice. They haven’t gotten them just on the power play or just on the rush. They’ve gotten them five-on-five, with the forecheck, a turnover and net-front presence. They’ve gotten them a lot of different ways. “That’s a result of the way we want to play. That’s also a result of having a group back there that moves the puck well and has that ability to jump into the play and move and read in the offensive zone.” WXDX-FM color analyst Phil Bourque, who played defense and wing in the NHL, maintained an aggressive approach on the blue line can help the Penguins play defense as well as offense. “I like that the Penguins’ defensemen are on their toes when it comes to the puck going in a north direction and getting up on the play,” Bourque said. “What makes that so important is you’re going to contribute offensively, but you’re [also] going to close the gap. So if the puck starts going back in your direction, south, you have a tight gap. continued on page 99

QUALITY IS ALL WE THINK ABOUT. THAT AND QUALITY.

THINK ABOUT IT. First, we pioneered the 10-year/100,000-mile warranty. Then, we led the way with Hyundai Assurance. Now, the EPA has just named Hyundai the most fuel-efficient carmaker in America.* Sure, it’s another important milestone reached, but it’s also a reminder to stay focused on whatever lies ahead. For more on Hyundai, visit Hyundai.com

Defensemen Alex Goligoski and Paul Martin

have shown varying offensive skills and are “All five players on the ice have to contributing to the Penguins’ attack. realize who is jumping up on the play, so there’s a responsibility for the forwards, too, that if I see a defenseman jumping up on the play and I’m behind him, I’m not going to jump up on the play, too. “If he gets caught then I have to stay back for him, so there’s that responsibility. But I think everybody’s on the same page and that’s what makes it easy for a defenseman to instinctively just jump up knowing, ‘OK, there’s a forward back there and I know he’s going to cover my butt just in case something bad happens.’” That help from a responsible group of forwards has allowed the Penguins’ defensemen to display their offensive skills and contribute on the attack in a variety of ways. Martin, while seemingly still trying to shake a New Jersey-like “defense first” mentality, has revealed himself to be a puck mover and a decision maker and a dynamic skater, as advertised. Zbynek Michalek, albeit briefly, has shown himself to be a good skater and an above-average puck mover. Goligoski has continued to inspire reminders of Brian Rafalski while seemingly attempting to pick up where Sergei Gonchar left off in terms of playing a complete offensive game. Letang, who has been identified in the past as a potential Norris Trophy winner some day, has become more aggressive and more accurate (as opposed to consistently accurate) with his shot and remains a fluid and explosive skater. And Brooks Orpik, who like Michalek hasn’t played much in the early going due to injury, never seems to get the credit he deserves for being able to skate out of trouble in two or three strides, and for the hard, flat passes Orpik delivers that hit forwards in stride. No wonder the points have been piling up from the back end. “It’s not a surprise and it’s not because of taking risks or doing great things individually, one-on-one,” Bylsma said of his defensemen. “They’re adding to the play, jumping into the offense and making good reads and as a result our team is getting some good results with the defensemen.” Added Bourque: “They’re so special, so gifted offensively that as long as they stay within the system and stay focused the points will come.” Mike Prisuta is the sports director for WDVE-FM and the sports anchor for “Jim, Randy & the DVE Morning Show.”

MIGHTY PENGUINS DEMONSTRATE POWER Loren Worthington

The game is played by disabled players who mount special sleds that are fitted with skates, and use their sticks to advance across the ice or control the puck. Aiming to provide children and young adults with disabilities the opportunity to participate in competitive sport, the Mighty Penguins were founded in 1998 by volunteers from the Shriners Hospital for Children ™ in Erie, Pa. “Our program is about much more than winning and losing,” said Pittsburgh Penguins Sled Hockey manager Angie McCoy — whose son, Daniel, skates with the team. “Many of our kids would have never imagined being able to play hockey because of their disability.” At its infancy, sled hockey was therapeutic in nature, providing persons with disabilities a reliable fitness option. Now, in its 12th year of operation, the Mighty Penguins roster fields three teams featuring youth, junior, and adult players. “The program provides an opportunity not only to play the game, but to interact with people in similar situations,” McCoy said. “The Mighty Penguins have become a social network in addition to being a sport.” Over the last decade, sled hockey has experienced a period of exponential growth. As a result, the Mighty Penguins are competing in tournaments all across North America. Fully recognizing the game’s expansion, USA Hockey rewarded its players by partnering with the National Hockey League to present the USA Hockey Adult Sled Classic Tournament. The event consisted of four sled teams represented by a local NHL affiliate — the Pittsburgh Penguins, Chicago Blackhawks, Philadelphia Flyers and Colorado Avalanche sled squads took the ice Oct. 8-10 in Denver, Colo., in search of capturing the inaugural tournament crown. Standout performances from center Daniel McCoy (second in tournament scoring with 10 goals in five games) and goaltender Danny Hefley (named tournament MVP with a .828 save percentage) guided the Penguins sled team to a third-place finish for the weekend. This year, the Pittsburgh Penguins Sled Hockey team will compete for the first time in a league of their own. The Mid-American Sled Hockey League is comprised of teams from Fort Wayne, Ind., Detroit, Mich., Grand Rapids, Mich., an Ohio club, and the Pittsburgh Mighty Penguins. The Mid-Am Sled Hockey League begins its inaugural season of play on Nov. 20 & 21 at Valley Sports Complex in New Kensington and BladeRunners Ice Complex in Harmarville, PA. At season’s end, the top two teams from the Mid-Am Sled Hockey League will represent their district in Blaine, Minn. during the 2011 USA Hockey Disabled Festival — where the Adult Sled Hockey National Championships will take place April 1-3. “This is only a testament to how the sport has grown both locally and nationally,” McCoy said.

ROSSI’S ROAD:

500 WORDS ARE 497 TOO MANY TO TYPE ON A BLACKBERRY The Penguins’ first big road trip of the season — a recently-wrapped trek through Nashville, St. Louis and Tampa — reminded me of an agonizing three-game jaunt from last season. Then again, that jaunt provided me my best “Nightmare News” from the four years I’ve spent traveling to cover the club. I coined the phrase “Nightmare News” during my first year on the beat. Halfway through that season I finally picked up on a trend. Each time I came across an opposing club’s beat reporter the following question came my way: So, what’s your worst deadline story? At first I thought these colleagues were asking what story that I turned in on a tight deadline was my worst display of writing, what detail had I missed, which score had I revered. Soon I was made aware that “worst deadline story” was code for the worst experience on the beat that a reporter could never have seen coming. A reporter can’t create one of those stories, though. A situation must present itself. That first year covering the Penguins, I heard many of these stories from grizzled veteran beat reporters, and upon the finish of each one I always offered the same assessment: “Oh, man, what a nightmare!” Soon I began referring to these stories as “Nightmare News,” but by the end of my second season I still hadn’t generated any for myself. With that quasi-history lesson out of the way I present my “Nightmare News,” a story that I told a first-year beat reporter covering the Nashville Predators the night the Penguins won in overtime in the Music City. . . All was going well for me (not the Penguins) on Thursday, November 19, 2009. They were losing badly at Ottawa, an eventual 6-2 defeat that marked the opening of a three-game road trip. So convincing was this defeat that my early game story — the one I file as soon as the game ends — was finished but for the final score midway through the third period. As the final minutes wound down I kept hitting SAVE on my keyboard — because nothing is continued on page 117

worse than losing to a computer crash a story that is already written. The final buzzer sounded and I plugged in the final score, hit SAVE one last time, copied my text and logged onto the company web site where reporter send stories to the copy desk back in Pittsburgh. All was going smoothly until I tried pasting that text onto that web site page. My computer screen went blank. Hardly great news, but I had saved the story so often that I needed only to try a hard reboot. That involves removing the laptop battery, waiting a few seconds and reinserting it then powering up. My computer wouldn’t power up. Awful news, but not one I had time to moan about. I hustled to the Penguins dressing room, now mostly clear of players, and begged several of the guys for a few quotes. After scribbling some of their words on my notepad I jogged to the media work room while speaking over my cell phone to the editors. They asked what my options were. I could think of none, until one editor suggested I try writing the story on my Blackberry. Interesting idea, I thought, and I pounded away at the Blackberry keypad. Forty-five minutes and at least a dozen typos later I had a final gamer for my desk.

(WILKES-BARRE/SCRANTON; AHL): Games Played: 4; Goals: 2; Assists: 3; Points: 5; SOG: 19 How would you describe your playing style? My strengths are that I can play in a lot of different situations. I’m considered a two-way forward. Who was your favorite player growing up? Joe Sakic. He was a power-play guy; he was a penalty kill guy; he kind of did everything. What was your first NHL goal like? My first NHL goal was against the Bruins in Boston. It was my third or fourth game. What was it like the first time you got called up to the NHL? We just came back from Christmas Break. We had a practice on Christmas night actually, and after practice they told me that I was going up the next day. We were playing a 2 p.m. game in New Jersey. We left at like 7 a.m. in the morning on the Dec. 26 and played that afternoon. I had some family that was able to come into town, so it was special that I got to share that moment with them. Which road arena is your favorite? Montreal. We played a preseason game there and their fans are crazy. It’s a huge arena with a lot of fans, so it’s a great rink to play in. 120

On January 1, 2008, in a game for the ages at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Orchard Park, NY, the Penguins and Sabres took to the great outdoors … and the NHL Winter Classic was born. A National Hockey League attendance record setting crowd of 71,217 witnessed as the Penguins prevailed, 2-1. Sidney Crosby’s shootout-winner amid the snowfall turned the final page on the game’s storybook ending. The success of the 2008 NHL Winter Classic led to it becoming an annual event played on New Year’s Day in a different NHL city. Here’s a summary of the matchups and locations for each game.

Even as Brent Johnson was making a compelling case for more playing time, he left no doubt about who the Penguins’ No. 1 goalie is. “Marc-Andre [Fleury] is the face of goaltending here. Everybody knows that. It’s his job.” Johnson said. “I’m grateful that I’m getting the chance to play a couple games and get some wins for the guys, but everybody in the [dressing] room knows it’s Flower’s team. He’s the goaltender that will be there down the stretch.” All that’s true. But it’s also true that the Penguins get quality goaltending whenever Johnson steps between the pipes. Pressed into extra duty when Fleury opened the campaign with a run of disappointing play, Johnson posted amazing numbers in his first five games of the season: a 1.39 goalsagainst average, a .951 save percentage and a 4-0-1 record. Johnson’s only loss during that string might have been his best performance: He racked up 23 saves in 61 minutes as the Penguins lost 1-0 at St. Louis Oct. 23. Johnson’s opposite number, Jaroslav Halak (remember him?) made 31 stops.

There’s no doubt that the Penguins get quality goaltending whenever Johnson steps between the pipes. continued on page 141

Thirty-two stops in a 5-2 decision over Ottawa on Oct. 18 at CONSOL Energy Center.

Dan Bylsma hesitates to play the same goaltender three times in four nights, even the starter. Most NHL coaches feel the same. But Bylsma went that route with Johnson, and got rewarded with consecutive victories over the Isles, Flyers and Senators. Johnson couldn’t remember the last time he started three games in succession. “It’s been a while,” Johnson said. “I can’t really tell you.” Johnson, 32, hasn’t started over 28 games in a season since 2002-03, when he played with St. Louis. One thing is certain: Johnson was enjoying the action. “I feel confident,” Johnson said after beating the Islanders. “I’m just trying to simplify everything. Keep it simple and stay patient. Let the puck come to me. It’s been working. I just want to keep it going.” The victory over the Isles was the Pens’ first-ever regular-season win at CONSOL Energy Center. They had failed in three prior attempts. The Penguins had a 2-0 lead midway through the game, but the Islanders forced overtime before Alex Goligoski netted the winner. “It’s definitely a monkey off our back,” said the 6-foot-3, 196-pound Johnson. “I thought we’d been playing very well [at home]. We just couldn’t come up with the points. With this game, everyone was involved. It was great. Just an all-in effort.” The Islanders got back in the game when Kris Letang received a major penalty for delivering a check to the head of Blake Comeau. Replay showed Letang had, in fact, made contact with Comeau’s shoulder, and the NHL later rescinded the major. But the officiating faux pas gifted the Isles a power play goal that cut the Penguins’ lead to 2-1. “Everyone on the bench realized it wasn’t as bad as it looked,” Johnson said. “Kris hit him shoulder to shoulder. We maybe had a little bit of a letdown. But we were great on the penalty-kill all night, even though they got one there. We anticipated very well.” Despite his impressive stats, Johnson knows goaltending goes beyond numbers: “It’s about making the saves when you need to. Timely saves are the most important. Keeping it close down the stretch and just giving the team a chance to win.” Last season, Johnson’s first in Pittsburgh, saw him go 10-6-1 with a 2.76 goals-against and a .906 save percentage. He played 23 games, starting 15. As noted, he couldn’t remember the last time he started three games in a row. But, Johnson added, “I feel sharp right now. The main thing is the team getting two points no matter who’s [in goal].”

Mark Madden hosts a radio show 3-6 p.m. weekdays at WXDX-FM (105.9).
