AROUND THE NHL The Penguins weren’t the only Atlantic Division squad dealt bad news on the injury front as the calendar flipped from October to November. Just two days into the season’s second month, the New Jersey Devils learned they will have to play the next three months without the services of sniper Zach Parise. A 38-goal scorer last season, Parise underwent Zach Parise arthroscopic knee surgery and had a torn meniscus repaired on Nov. 2. He first suffered the injury on Oct. 30 in a game at Los Angeles. Parise had three goals and six points in 12 games with the Devils, who are off to a 3-9-1 start.

SCARY GARY RETURNS TO NHL Former Penguins forward Gary Roberts is back in the National Hockey League, albeit in a different role than most fans are used to seeing him. Roberts was hired by the Dallas Stars on Nov. 2 to serve as a player development consultant. Roberts was hired for his new position by former Gary Roberts teammate and good friend Joe Nieuwendyk, who currently serves as general manager for the Stars. In his new role, Roberts, who has developed a highly-regarded reputation as a workout guru in his post-retirement days, will work with players throughout Dallas’ system teaching them the proper ways to train and maintain their bodies.

A growing trend since the NHL returned from the lockout six years ago is the number of 18-year-olds who comprise rosters each season. This year is no different, as five members of the Class of 2010 will ply their trade at the NHL level. The Fab Five for this season includes Edmonton forward Taylor Hall (No. 1 overall), Boston center Tyler Seguin (No. 2), Carolina center and rookie scoring leader Jeff Skinner (No. 7), Atlanta winger Alexander Burmistrov (No. 8) and Anaheim blueliner Cam Fowler (No. 12).

RON BURKLE Ron Burkle has now added a new arena — Pittsburgh’s CONSOL Energy Center — to his tremendous list of accomplishments in the business world. Burkle, widely recognized as one of the preeminent investors in retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 12th season as co-owner of the Penguins. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his role in negotiations for the new arena deal. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is co-chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League and the Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy. He has received numerous awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year and the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year award.
MARIO LEMIEUX Mario Lemieux will always be remembered for the magic he created on the ice, but one of the crowning achievements of his remarkable business career came this season — the opening of CONSOL Energy Center, home of the Penguins and Pittsburgh’s new multi-purpose entertainment venue. Even before the reality of CONSOL Energy Center, Lemieux and coowner Ron Burkle had turned the Penguins into a premier NHL franchise. The Penguins have been named No. 1 in Fan Relations by ESPN the Magazine, sold out a team-record 166 straight games, sold out every suite for three straight seasons and established records for local television ratings, merchandise sales and website hits. Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVPs trophies and two Conn Smythe Trophies as playoff MVP, in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $8 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org. Mario, his wife Nathalie and their four children live in Sewickley. For extended bios please visit pittsburghpenguins.com 10
DAVID MOREHOUSE Pittsburgh native David Morehouse was named CEO of the Penguins in September and leads the team into an exciting new era at CONSOL Energy Center. Morehouse had served as team president since 2007, overseeing ticket sales, marketing, corporate sales, communications and brand development, as well as representing the team in corporate relations and governmental affairs. Under his leadership the Penguins have become one of the top organizations in professional sports — ranked No. 1 in Fan Relations and No. 5 overall as a franchise among 122 pro teams in North America by ESPN The Magazine. As team president, Morehouse implemented a brand strategy that featured a new commitment to marketing, fan interaction and community outreach, as well as a targeted focus on the team’s young fan demographic. Morehouse grew up in the Beechview section on Pittsburgh. He attended the Community College of Allegheny County and Duquesne University, and received a master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. He and his wife, Vanessa, have three children and live in Bell Acres. For extended bios please visit pittsburghpenguins.com

RAY SHERO Ray Shero, 48, was named GM of the Pittsburgh Penguins on May 25, 2006. His fresh ideas and calm but firm management style helped transform the Penguins from a team that did not qualify for the playoffs in 2005-06 to one that reached the Stanley Cup Final in 2007-08 and won the Cup in 2008-09. One of his first acts as GM was to declare a goal of building a team that could compete for championships on a yearly basis. He revamped the team’s hockey operations staff and structure, upgraded professional and amateur scouting, added a team operations director and opened new lines of communication with the business side of the organization. Ray built his hockey sense and managerial style during 14 seasons as an NHL assistant general manager — six with the Ottawa Senators and eight with the Nashville Predators. Shero played college hockey at St. Lawrence University and was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in 1982. He spent seven years as a player agent before making the transition to the front office. The native of St. Paul, Minn. is actively involved with USA Hockey and is a member of the USA Hockey National Team Advisory Group. Ray and his wife, Karen, and their two sons reside in Upper St. Clair.
JASON BOTTERILL Jason Botterill enters his second full season as assistant general manager after being promoted to his current position on May 22, 2009 by general manager Ray Shero. As assistant GM, Botterill works closely with Shero on all hockeyrelated matters, including scouting, player development and contract negotiations. DAN BYLSMA In just one-plus seasons behind the bench, Dan Bylsma has already become one of the most successful coaches in Penguins’ history. After being promoted to Penguins head coach in February 2009, Bylsma, 40, directed the team to its third Stanley Cup in franchise history — a feat previously accomplished by legendary coaches “Badger” Bob Johnson and Scott Bowman. In the process Bylsma became the 14th rookie head coach, and just the fourth in the past 50 years, to capture the Stanley Cup. Of those 14, only Montreal’s Al MacNeil (1970-71) took over mid-season. Bylsma played nine NHL seasons as a right winger with Los Angeles and Anaheim from 1995-2004. He played 429 NHL regular-season games, recording 19 goals and 62 points, and also played in the 2003 Stanley Cup Final with Anaheim. Bylsma was an assistant coach at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton for two seasons from 2006-08 and was named head coach at the start of the 2008-09 season. He went 35-16-1-2 in 54 games with WB/S before being promoted to Pittsburgh. He played four seasons of college hockey at Bowling Green. Dan and his wife, Mary Beth, have one son and reside in the North Hills.
TONY GRANATO Tony Granato, 46, begins his second season on the Penguins’ coaching staff. Granato, among his many responsibilities, works with the Penguins’ forwards and penalty killing units. He oversaw the NHL’s ninth-ranked penalty killing group with an 84.1-percent success rate, and second best on the road at 85.3 percent. Prior to joining the Penguins, Granato spent six seasons behind the bench for the Colorado Avalanche and served two stints as Avalanche head coach from 2002-04 and 2008-09. Granato compiled a 215-104-17-16 record and led Colorado to a Northwest Division title in 2003. Granato played 13 seasons in the NHL with the NY Rangers, Los Angeles and San Jose. In 1997, he was the recipient of the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy for overcoming a near career-ending brain injury. In 773 career games, the feisty forward posted 248 goals, 492 points and 1,425 penalty minutes. He appeared in 79 career postseason games and helped lead Los Angeles to a Stanley Cup Final berth in 1993. Granato played four years at the University of Wisconsin and was inducted into the Badgers’ Hall of Fame in 2000. Granato also played for the U.S. National team in 1987-88 and represented his country in the 1988 Olympic Games in Calgary. Tony and his wife, Linda, are the parents of four children and reside in the South Hills. For extended bios please visit pittsburghpenguins.com 16

TODD REIRDEN Todd Reirden, 39, joined Pittsburgh’s coaching staff on July 31, 2010 after coaching with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins the previous two seasons. Reirden, an NHL defenseman for parts of five seasons, works closely with the team’s defensemen. Reirden, completed his first full season as WB/S head coach in 200910, leading a young and inexperienced team to an impressive 41-34-2-3 record, finishing third in the East Division, and a berth in the Calder Cup playoffs. Prior to joining the Penguins organization, Reirden spent one season as an assistant coach with the Bowling Green Falcons (CCHA) — his alma mater. He was a teammate of Bylsma’s during the 1990-91 and 1991-92 seasons at Bowling Green. Selected by New Jersey in the 12th round (242nd overall) of the 1990 NHL Enrty Draft, Reirden played professionally for 13 seasons, retiring after the 2006-07 campaign with Graz EC of the Austrian Hockey League. He appeared in 183 NHL games with Edmonton, St. Louis, Atlanta and Phoenix, recording 46 points (11+35) and 181 penalty minutes. Todd and his wife, Shelby, have one son.
GILLES MELOCHE Former NHL goaltender Gilles Meloche is in his fifth season as the Penguins’ full-time goaltending coach and 25th with the organization. Meloche has been instrumental in developing Marc-Andre Fleury into a Stanley Cup-winning netminder. Meloche served as a Penguins scout from 1989-2006 and also doubled as a goaltending coach/consultant during much of that time. He was also part of the staff when the Penguins won Stanley Cups in 1991 and 1992. A native of Montreal, Quebec, Meloche spent 18 seasons as an NHL goaltender with Chicago, California, Cleveland, Minnesota and Pittsburgh. He played the final three seasons of his career in Pittsburgh following a 1985 trade. Meloche appeared in 788 NHL games during his career, posting a record of 270-351-131 with a 3.64 goals-against average. In 45 career playoff games, he posted a 21-19 record and a 3.48 goals-against average. Gilles and his wife, Sophie, reside in Pittsburgh. His son, Eric, is a pro player who was a member of the Penguins organization from 2000-04.

OUR NEW HOME CONSOL Energy Center opened in August, 2010 as Pittsburgh’s new multi-purpose entertainment venue — home of the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins as well as other professional and collegiate sports, concerts, children’s shows, skating shows and more. It replaces the old Civic Arena/ Mellon Arena, which had operated since 1961 and was home of the Penguins from their inception in CONSOL Energy Center represents an exciting new era for 1967. It was the oldest arena in the the city, the region and the Pittsburgh Penguins. National Hockey League. “CONSOL Energy Center represents an exciting new era for the city, the region and the Pittsburgh Penguins,” said David Morehouse, CEO of the hockey team. “With open concourses, comfortable seating, cutting-edge technology, a state-of-the-art scoreboard and sound system, and an extensive array of food and beverage options, it is a spectacular symbol for the Pittsburgh of the 21st century.” CONSOL Energy Center was completed on time and under budget, thanks to the combined efforts of architectural firms Populous and Astorino; the owner’s representative, ICON; the construction company, PJ Dick/Hunt; and the excellent construction workers and skilled trade workers of Western Pennsylvania. The new arena seats 18,087 for hockey, 19,000 for basketball and almost 20,000 for concerts. It is a green building and is the first NHL arena to attain LEED Gold certification. Even before its doors had opened, CONSOL Energy Center landed commitments from shows that would have bypassed the old arena — the 2012 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament first and second rounds, the 2013 NCAA Frozen Four, and back-to-back concerts by music legend Paul McCartney. McCartney, who first played Pittsburgh with the Beatles in 1964 but hadn’t performed here since 1990, christened the new arena with a grand opening concert on August 18, 2010. In its first season of operation, CONSOL Energy Center also will be home to the Pittsburgh Power of the Arena Football League — bringing indoor football back to the city for the first time in almost 20 years. A funding plan for the new arena project was completed in March, 2007, thanks to the combined efforts of Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell, Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato and Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl, among others. The Sports & Exhibition Authority owns the building on behalf of the city and county, and the Penguins have the lease. The new arena is managed by SMG, with Jay Roberts serving as general manager.

held off the scoresheet in three of his last six games against them. . . Malkin has been held off the scoresheet in three of his last seven games against Boston. . . Pittsburgh is 57-97-21-3 all-time against the Bruins, including 37-36-15-2 at home.
Zbynek Michalek returned to the lineup on November 3 in Dallas after missing nine games due to injury.
THE PENGUINS Tonight’s game begins a 10-game stretch in which the Penguins will play at home seven times. They host Tampa Bay here Friday and then after playing in Atlanta on Saturday will enjoy a three-game homestand against the New York Rangers, Vancouver and Carolina . . . The Penguins went into last weekend’s games at Anaheim and at Phoenix with a 6-6-1 record through 13 games. . . Zbynek Michalek returned to the lineup last Wednesday in Dallas after missing nine games with a shoulder injury. The Penguins dropped that game, 5-2, and were 1-1-0 on their four-game road trip at that point. . . Pittsburgh entered the Anaheim game on Friday in an 0-for-27 power play drought. Since the start of the 1997-98 season, the Penguins’ longest stretch without a power play goal was 33 chances from Dec. 23, 2008 and into the first period of their Jan. 6, 2009 game. . . Brent Johnson suffered his first loss of the season against Dallas. He entered that game with a 2.37 career goals-against average with the Penguins, the best of any goaltender who’s ever played more than one game with the team. . . Malkin had gone 12 games without a power play goal before facing the Ducks, equaling his second-longest such drought. He went 25 games without a power play goal during the 2008-09 season. . . Crosby incurred his fifth career fighting major in the loss to the Stars when he took on Matt Niskanen. . . Jordan Staal (broken hand) remains out of the Penguins’ lineup, meaning Pittsburgh has yet to be completely healthy this season. continued on page 32

THE BRUINS Boston played in Washington last Friday and then returned home to host St . Louis on Saturday . After tonight’s game, the Bruins will play five of their next six games at home, beginning with a matchup against Montreal tomorrow night . . . The Bruins had won three straight before playing in Washington, thanks in large part to the goaltending of Tim Thomas . Thomas was 7-0-0 with a .977 save percentage and 0 .72 goals-against average after a 5-2 win at Buffalo last Wednesday, easily the NHL’s best marks at that point . He is 4-3-0-1 in his career here in Pittsburgh and 6-4-0-3 overall against the Penguins with a 2 .62 goals-against average Sidney Crosby is known as one the NHL’s best faceoff men, but has his worst success rate and .906 save percentage . . . While Crosby has against Patrice Bergeron of the Bruins . established himself as one of the NHL’s best faceoff men, the Bruins’ Patrice Bergeron is one guy who gives him plenty of trouble . Against players he’s faced at least 30 times in the faceoff circle, Crosby has his worst success rate against Bergeron, winning just 37 of 113 faceoffs, or 32 .7 percent . . . Nathan Horton (5+5) and Krejci (2+8) shared the Bruins’ scoring lead through nine games .

TONIGHT’S COMPETITORS ARE:
ROUND ONE HEAT TWO: BUTLER VALLEY DAWGS SQUIRT 2 VS. PITTSBURGH VIPERS SQUIRT 2 The one-on-one competition features Will Meglio/Ben Studebaker from Butler Valley against Bryce Schueler/Sergio Benitez from Pittsburgh. You can also view this and previously shown competitions at pittsburghpenguins.com.
On Sunday, October 10, sixteen youth hockey teams from the Pittsburgh Amateur Hockey League (PAHL) in the Squirt age group (age 9 - 10) participated in a shootout competition at CONSOL Energy Center. The event was videotaped to be shown in episodes at Penguins home games. The first round of competition featured heats between two teams striving to advance to the next round. Sixteen teams fielded five skaters shooting against the opposing team’s goalie. After each team competition, an individual shooter and goaltender squared off against the opposing team’s individual tandem for a one-on-one competition. Each winning team and pair of individuals advanced to the next round of eight teams/tandems. The format repeated as teams and individual pairs advanced through the quarter-final heats to move on to the semi-finals. Robust competition marked the semifinal round for teams and individual tandems. The remaining two teams and individual tandems then had to “leave it all on the ice” in vying for the championship. Early in the second intermission of each Penguins home game the various heats in the competition will be featured. Enjoy each episode.

ROSSI’S ROAD:
CAROLINA BARBECUE MAKES GROWN MEN CRY (HAPPY TEARS) This is the story, which can be told at least twice each NHL season, of a reporter who can’t make a call while enjoying what can be called the league’s best food. My initial thought on Oct. 30, when my alarm clock buzzed at 3 a.m.: Perhaps a 6:15 flight to Raleigh via Newark (N.J.) wasn’t the best idea. (This was later confirmed upon arriving at the airport and realizing that Halloween-weekend travelers would make for longer security lines because few costumes are agreeable with security measures. Anyway, going on about that would only get me off track…) My second thought on Oct. 30, when my alarm clock buzzed at 3 a.m.: Do I even want to take my cell phone on this trip? It was a fair question to ask myself, even if it was way too early to ask it. I was set to return from Raleigh the next day at noon, meaning I’d be in Raleigh for less than 24 hours. The trip would consists of me arriving at the airport, picking up a rental car, heading to the arena, spending the day and part of the night at the arena, leaving the arena around 11 p.m., driving to my hotel, waking up, returning the rental car and, finally, trying the security scene on Halloween day at the Raleigh airport. Clearly, my scheduled was booked. Free time wasn’t within reach, and I wouldn’t have much time to talk with anybody on the cell phone. There was also this argument against taking the cell phone: I couldn’t talk on it in the arena even if I wanted to dial a friend and discuss the dos and don’ts for hanging banners. (Do: Stanley Cup championship banners; don’t: division title banners.) RBC Center is an underrated hockey facility. When the Carolina Hurricanes are playing © Getty Images

used in the playoffs and a video-board goal celebration that features pro wrestling legend Ric Flair screaming, “Woo!” Also, the atmosphere outside RBC Center is second to none in the NHL. It more closely resembles a college football game because of hours-long tailgates that features wonderful-smelling snacks and fans on lawn chairs enjoy those snacks. Oh, and actual tag football games in the parking lot — something that no other NHL arena can claim, obviously. I’ve walked past that scene countless of times and wanted to call a friend and muse about it once inside the arena. The problem facing me (or anybody) once inside RBC Center is that cell phone service doesn’t exist. One step inside is the beginning © Getty Images

cell phones, no matter the service provider. OK, so maybe this should be seen as a blessing in disguise because, admittedly, I’ve become too reliant on cell phones. I carry two, sadly — one for work and the other for personal use. Still, about 90 percent of my NHL contacts converse with me via text message. I need my cell phones. They complete me. This is especially true at RBC Center, because the media meal there is second to none and deserving of word being spread about it. All those famous stories about reporters getting fat and happy on media meals — well, they aren’t always true, but at RBC Center they apply. This is because the meal is consistent with three of the seemingly least healthy items, each worth the $10 cover charge. I’m talking smoked meat with a variety of southern-style sauces; hot buttery rolls; and frozen custard with a selection of toppings and syrups. Think: bliss. There aren’t any other media meals that opposing coaches make habit of eating. This one is that good, and I think that every time I devour second and third helpings. Between those helpings I always make the same comment: “Best food in hockey.” I reach for my cell phone and think about texting somebody in my gluttonous moment of

I feel
.
Ask a grieving child how they’re feeling and you may get a lot of answers. Or none at all. For many, finding the words to express their feelings can be difficult. But while finding the right words may not be easy, finding the right place to turn to for help can be. At the Caring Place, we’re here when grieving children need someone to listen, to talk, or to just sit and be. For more information about one of our peer support groups or to volunteer, call us today.

THE PENGUINS GAME VAULT MAY 11, 1991 • PENGUINS 5, BRUINS 3 CIVIC ARENA In a stunning turn of events that seemed almost improbable eight days earlier after Boston’s Vladimir Ruzicka scored an overtime goal which put the Bruins ahead 2-0 in their Wales Conference Finals matchup with the Pittsburgh, the Penguins entered Game Six on May 11, 1991 with a chance to advance to the team’s first-ever Stanley Cup Final. Three straight victories by The victory over Boston on May 11, 1991 led to the the Penguins had the team Penguins’ first Stanley Cup Final appearance. on the verge of making Kevin Stevens’ guarantee that Pittsburgh would win the series following that Game Two defeat sound prophetic as the two teams squared off at the Civic Arena. Things didn’t start off as the 16,164 in attendance had hoped, as goals by Boston’s Cam Neely and Ken Hodge Jr. staked the Bruins to a 2-0 lead midway through the second period. But a pair of Pittsburgh goals by Larry Murphy on the power play and Phil Bourque at even strength tied the contest at 2-2 heading into the final period. The two teams exchanged goals 2:05 minutes apart halfway through the period, as Gordie Roberts gave the Penguins a brief 3-2 advantage before Boston’s Don Sweeney evened things again at 3-3. Just when it felt like overtime was quickly on the horizon, Roberts sent Mark Recchi streaking down the right wing boards into the Bruins zone. Recchi wasted little time delivering, as he fired a snap shot past the blocker of Bruins goaltender Andy Moog from the far dot to put the Penguins in front for good, 4-3. Fittingly, it was captain Mario Lemieux — whose arrival as the No. 1-overall pick of the 1984 NHL Entry Draft began the Penguins’ metamorphosis from also-ran to Cup contender — who sent the Bruins home and clinched Pittsburgh’s berth in the Stanley Cup Final by turning and sending a shot from his own blue line down the ice and into the empty net to finish off a 5-3 Penguins victory and a 4-2 series win. As the Civic Arena crowd counted down the final seconds in unison, Penguins Hall of Fame broadcaster Mike Lange offered up the perfect backdrop like only he can: “You can spit shine your shoes, because we are going dancing with Lord Stanley.” Twenty-four years of frustration were over — the Penguins were headed to the franchise’s first Stanley Cup Final.

DERYK ENGELLAND After 486 minor-league games, Deryk Engelland was thrilled to make the Penguins roster at this year’s training camp. Happier still to play 12 of the team’s first 13 games. But as October became November, Coach Dan Bylsma had the 28-year-old rookie defenseman penciled in for bigger and better. “When we were in New Jersey, he was knocking [Ilya] Kovalchuk and [Zach] Parise around in the corner,” Bylsma said, referring to the Penguins’ 3-1 win at Newark on Oct. 11. “Then Kovalchuk was in the offensive zone and was worried about hitting Engelland and not worried about scoring a goal. That was evidence this guy can go out and play, and play physical and be a presence against good skill players. “When you put out a guy who can be that presence and play good defense against good players, he’s going to get an opportunity to do that.” From ECHL stalwart to shutdown defenseman in the NHL? Dreams do come true. Engelland’s just took a while to realize. He bounced around, skating for five different minor-league teams over the course of his first four pro seasons. He signed with the Penguins in 2007, then enjoyed three solid campaigns with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League. A rash of injuries on Pittsburgh’s blue line enabled Engelland to play nine NHL games last season. The 6-foot-2, 202-pounder was one of several players competing for the sixth and seventh spots on the Penguins’ defense corps at this year’s camp. Engelland made it. Finally. “It was a long climb,” Engelland said. “I’ve been through a lot of ups and downs, injuries, everything. “This is my fourth year with the [organization]. Since I got with them, every year I’ve taken another step in the right direction. I’m here now, and it’s a huge accomplishment. But still. . . it’s just another step in the right direction.” Reading, Pa., Las Vegas, North Charleston, S.C. . . . Engelland played 148 games in the ECHL, hockey’s Class AA league. No dead ends, but some low-level pit stops. But he never considered quitting. “Oh, no. Definitely not,” Engelland said. “This is something I’ve dreamed Engelland’s effectiveness against players like Zach Parise about my whole life. Even if you play earlier this season did not go unnoticed by Dan Bylsma. in the minor leagues, you can make a continued on page 99

QUALITY IS ALL WE THINK ABOUT. THAT AND QUALITY.
THINK ABOUT IT. First, we pioneered the 10-year/100,000-mile warranty. Then, we led the way with Hyundai Assurance. Now, the EPA has just named Hyundai the most fuel-efficient carmaker in America.* Sure, it’s another important milestone reached, but it’s also a reminder to stay focused on whatever lies ahead. For more on Hyundai, visit Hyundai.com

I love doing it every day. Going to the rink, all the guys, everything.” Hyundai JOB NAME:Given his resume, Engelland certainly doesn’t take playing in the NHL for granted. Quality/Pittsburgh “Definitely not,” said the Edmonton native. “I’m not in any position to take it for Penguins Program Ad TRIM: granted. Nothing is set in stone. I’m here every day, still trying out. Still trying to stick. I 5.375" X 8.5" just want to give our team the best chance I can. I can still get better.” LIVE: Engelland is hardly a finesse player. When asked to describe his game, Engelland said, 4.375" X 7.5" BLEED: “Play like a jerk.” 5.625" X 8.75" “I want to play physical,” Engelland continued. COLOR: CMYK LS: 133/SWOP “Make guys not want to play against me. Try to get as INSERTION DATE: 2011 Football Publimany hits as I can. Stick up for my teammates. Create cations sparks. Good puck retrieval. Good coming out of my FOR QUESTIONS CALL: zone. Get clears on the PK. Win net-front battles.” Karen Newman Engelland doesn’t mind the occasional fight, either. 214-891-5875
Engelland fought seven times in his first 21 NHL games. The Penguins have winger Eric Godard to handle the rough stuff. But a tough defenseman who’s ready to trade fists adds a nice dimension. “It’s definitely an advantage for a team,” Engelland said. “We have other guys that will drop the gloves, but knowing there’s a [defenseman] that will drop ‘em regularly makes guys going to the net a little more timid. I think there’s an advantage there.” Engelland’s journey to the NHL Engelland more than held his own in early-season has been a long one and he fights with heavyweights like Toronto’s Colton Orr continues to improve with every shift. and Philadelphia’s Jody Shelley. But everyone knew Engelland could brawl. It’s his defensive efforts that have surprised and drawn praise. Engelland was especially impressive during the aforementioned visit to New Jersey, doing well in several matchups with the high-scoring Kovalchuk. “I thought that was one of my stronger games,” Engelland said. “I played the puck well, and tried to be as physical as I could against their top players. A hack here, a crosscheck there. . . that goes a long way for my type of game. I figured I did pretty well. I got some good stick-on-puck.” As for his one-on-ones with Kovalchuk, Engelland said, “You just try to end it as soon as possible. Give him time and space, and he can make you look pretty bad. “A couple of times I had good gap and shut the play down early. One time, he almost got around me. I looked up to see how the rush was playing out, and that’s when he made his move. You’ve got to fight right to the end. I knocked the puck off his stick. I got away with that one.” Engelland is a quick study. Very coachable. Not overly gifted, but unlikely to make the same mistake again and again. “It’s getting better every game. Every shift,” Engelland said. “I’m getting more confidence. I’m more confident with the puck. I’ve got to play physical, stick to my game and not try to do too much.” Mark Madden hosts a radio show 3-6 p.m. weekdays at WXDX-FM (105.9).

CALIFORNIA UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA HOCKEY PREVIEW The year 2002 certainly marked the turning point for California University of Pennsylvania hockey. It was during that season that Cal U began recruiting players and growing the school’s club hockey program. “We got the ball rolling and began to grow as a program,” Jamison Roth, Cal U’s Director of Sports Clubs said. As Cal U progressively revamped each aspect of their hockey program, the team’s appeal began to reach more and more prospective student athletes. Cal U joined the College Hockey East (CHE) as well as the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) at the Division III level in 2002, sparking even more interest in the team. The quick surge in Cal U’s appeal warranted the club’s expansion. In 2004, Cal U became one of the four founders of the Collegiate Hockey Association (CHA) in which they formed a second men’s ice hockey team. Then, in 2008, the club expanded one step further by adding a women’s hockey team into the mix. Cal U’s refurbishing of their hockey program elicited the strong support of the university, which is the backbone of their success. “The success has been driven on bringing in talented players from all across the country,” Justin Berger, head coach of the CHE Cal I team said. “It has really opened up many of the eyes of the university faculty, and their support has gone above and beyond.” The players’ dedication to their team shows through their play. All three of Cal U’s hockey teams have had immense success recently. The CHE Cal I team has won four consecutive regular-season titles, North Division crowns and playoff championships. They also won the ACHA Division III National Championship in 2008. The men’s CHA team and women’s team have seen their fair share of victories as well. The CHA team won their first regular-season title last season, and the women’s team won the Division II championship. Cal U will also bring the excitement to CONSOL Energy Center on November 11, where the women’s team will host Penn State at 6:00 pm and the men’s team will face off against rival Robert Morris immediately thereafter at 8:00 pm. “As a whole, from top to bottom, all three teams are competitive,” Roth said. “We expect the best from our players on and off the ice and winning championships is our goal.”

ORPIK GREW UP A GIANTS FAN Brooks Orpik came to Pittsburgh from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton via Boston College via western New York, but he left his heart in San Francisco. Born in northern California, Orpik grew up a Giants fan. His allegiance to his hometown team never faded. As a result he’s probably still celebrating San Francisco’s five-game victory over Texas in the recently completed World Series. “It’s pretty sweet,” Orpik said. “I knew they were going to be good this year. I definitely didn’t see them going all the way, that’s for sure.” Orpik lived in San Francisco until he was seven. Back then his father Rick sold baseball equipment. That gave a kid named in honor of an iconic U.S. hockey coach unique access to America’s national pastime. “I pretty much grew up in the clubhouse there at Candlestick Park,” Brooks Orpik said. While Rick conducted his business, Brooks got the chance to hang around with

the likes of Vida Blue, Will Clark, Chili Davis and Mike Krukow. No wonder he’s still a Giants fan. “I’ve always been a fan,” Orpik said. “I went back this summer to see a Red Sox-Giants series. I try to catch them in the summer as much as possible.” As any self-respecting Giants fan is well aware, the appearance in this year’s Fall Classic was the first for the franchise since 2002. “We lost to the Angels,” Orpik recalled. “And then after that they had some down years, so it’s exciting that they’re good again.” That’s right, he said “we” in referencing the Giants. Old habits are apparently the hardest to break, particularly in Orpik’s case. For in addition to providing the chance to pal around regularly with yesterday’s major leaguers, continued on page 117

Orpik’s early years afforded him the opportunity to build what eventually became an impressive memorabilia collection. “I have some really good stuff,” he said. “Not just from the Giants, but from a lot of the visiting players that came through. I have a lot of stuff from Pete Rose, that stuff is probably the highlight. I have a lot of balls and bats from a lot of guys. “I don’t think I’d ever give that stuff away.” It’s a collection that’s grown a little in recent years, even as Orpik was in the process of establishing himself as a Stanley Cup Champion with the Penguins. “My girlfriend got me a signed Tim Lincecum jersey a couple of years ago,” Orpik said. “She completely blindsided me with that. “It’s hanging up in our house in Boston framed.” As Orpik spoke of his favorite baseball team during the early stages of the series, it became apparent that what he appreciated the most was that this year’s Giants, the obvious star power of pitchers such as Lincecum and Matt Cain aside, defined themselves as a team. “I loved watching this team,” he said. “They obviously have great starting pitching, but it’s a team of, I wouldn’t say complete no-names, but, obviously, when they played Philly [in the National League Championship Series], Philly’s lineup was a lot more notable or recognizable than this lineup. “The Giants — nobody really hits for a good average — just kind of timely hits and somehow they get it done. Freddy Sanchez was huge for them. I’m sure all of the Pittsburgh fans remember who he is.” Orpik, likewise, remembers a time when playing baseball meant a great deal to him. Don’t we all? He didn’t start playing hockey until his family moved to Buffalo and Rick Orpik got into the hockey equipment business. From that point Brooks Orpik played baseball and hockey for as long as he could. Eventually, he had to choose one sport over the other. But even after he stopped playing baseball, even after he began playing hockey for a living and eventually rose to the top of his profession his loyalty to the Giants remained as strong as ever. “I played baseball all the way through high school and then I finally got kicked off the team because I had to make a decision whether I wanted to play hockey or baseball,” he recalled. “I think I made the right move.”
Orpik traveled to San Francisco over the summer to see the Giants-Red Sox at AT&T Park.

(WILKES-BARRE/SCRANTON; AHL): Games Played: 8; Goals: 3; Assists: 5; Points: 8; SOG: 22 (as of 11.03.10) How would you describe your playing style? I’m just good with the puck, with good vision up and down the ice. I’m good on the rush and getting to the net. I’m more offensive than defensive, but I get to the net and create chances. Who do you like to model your game after? Jerome Iginla because I always felt growing up that he was ‘the man.’ What was it like the first time you got called up to the NHL? It was pretty cool. It was All-Star Break last year. I was getting back from New York City over break. Coach called me and asked me if I was on my way back to Wilke-Barre/Scranton. He said, “Good news, you’re getting called up.” So I got my stuff together and traveled down to Pittsburgh that night. It was nice to be at the morning skate with the guys. It was a cool day. What was it like to score your first NHL goal against the Capitals? It was kind of a blur. I think I was a little bit behind the play. They were going on a rush, kind of a two-on-two almost. I was catching up going to the net. I think [Ruslan] Fedotenko shot it, and [Evgeni] Malkin kind of tipped it to the center and I was wide open by myself with a gaping net. It was the easiest goal I’ve scored in five years. What’s the most exciting game you’ve ever played? I have two. In college when we [Dartmouth] won the Ivy League championship against Cornell, that as a pretty exciting one. Then in pro, I would say the first game was cool, but I’d say Game Seven against the Portland Pirates in the third round. That was pretty special. We won with like 30 seconds left. It was pretty amazing.

On January 1, 2008, in a game for the ages at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Orchard Park, NY, the Penguins and Sabres took to the great outdoors … and the NHL Winter Classic was born. A National Hockey League attendance record setting crowd of 71,217 witnessed as the Penguins prevailed, 2-1. Sidney Crosby’s shootout-winner amid the snowfall turned the final page on the game’s storybook ending. The success of the 2008 NHL Winter Classic led to it becoming an annual event played on New Year’s Day in a different NHL city. Here’s a summary of the matchups and locations for each game.

PENGUINS DEFENSEMEN EXCEL UNDER REIRDEN Players aren’t the only people who get called up from the American Hockey League. Coaches frequently get promoted to the National Hockey League as well — especially within the Penguins organization. Penguins assistant coach Todd Reirden served as the head coach of the team’s top minor-league affiliate in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton last season, and much like his predecessor, Dan Blysma, he was brought to Pittsburgh thanks to his success in the AHL. “It’s been an amazing time in my life and I can’t thank the organization enough for taking a chance and a risk on me,” Reirden said. Reirden is in charge of the Penguins defensemen — a group that is off to a great start to the 2010-11 campaign. During the first month of the season, Pittsburgh had one of the highest scoring defensive corps in the NHL. Kris Letang was tied for the lead among blueliners after 12 games with 11 points (3G-8A). Alex Goligoski (3G-5A) and Paul Martin (1G-6A) also both ranked among the

top 15 defensive scorers. “We’ve seen some good games and we’ve seen some guys who are off to good seasons,” Reirden said. “As a group, I think we’re doing a great job limiting shots and chances against. But we’re still a work in progress.” That’s the scary part for the rest of the NHL. Reirden has had only one month to implement his system, which means he believes the defense will only get better. “There have been some different adjustments for them — and certainly for new players from past teams that they’ve been on,” he said. “It’s going to look different from other continued on page 141

defenses in the league and we expect a lot out of our guys. That was why we got the guys we did. We went out to get Paul Martin, and we went out to get Zbynek Michalek. We’re built a certain way, and it’s based upon mobility and our ability to defend with good sticks.” Martin had no trouble adjusting to the Penguins’ system, thanks to Reirden. “The system that they implemented and that they have in place is a good one for us,” Martin said. “And [Reirden] does a good job of teaching it to us and correcting things that we’re doing wrong. He’s very detailed. It makes it easy on the defense so you know what’s going on and what’s expected of you. “The biggest thing is that he’s always positive and encouraging. He does a good job of making sure everyone is doing their job and at the same time enjoying it.” Reirden already faced several challenges in his first month, including playing games with only five blueliners and injuries to key players such as Brooks Orpik and Michalek. But Reirden sees those situations as a blessing in disguise for the overall depth of the defense. “It’s about opportunity and putting guys in a situation to have success,” he said. “Everyone has taken advantage of that opportunity for the most part and have really done a great job.” Our D corps definitely has some talented players, but we want a different identity to our group back there. Whether that means the guy who plays 10 minutes or the guy who plays 27 minutes — their game should look the same, but just with different areas that they excel in. “We play as a unit, not individual players. That’s how it’s viewed and talked about amongst our group.” “[Reirden] did a good job managing the bench through injuries and deciding who would play in different situations,” Martin said. “It’s tougher when you have a couple

new guys back there to get a good read on them, but he’s done a good job so far making sure guys are playing to their potentials.” Now that the defense in getting healthier, Reirden is looking forward to further implementing his system. “I know our D group is going to continue to get better,” he said. “And I know that I’m going to continue to get better at this level and grow.”
