AROUND THE NHL Injuries continue to creep up on teams throughout the National Hockey League. The latest victim — Toronto Maple Leafs captain Dion Phaneuf. The bruising defenseman will miss the next four-to-six weeks after undergoing surgery on Nov. 3 to repair a laceration in his left leg. Phaneuf suffered the injury in a game against Ottawa on Dion Phaneuf Nov. 2 when he collided awkwardly with the Senators’ Peter Regin during the second period of a 3-2 Ottawa victory. “You can’t replace Dion and what he brings to the team, but other people will have to step up in a leadership role and be vocal,” Toronto head coach Ron Wilson told NHL.com.

CAPTAIN ON THE SHELF

There are moustaches, and then there is Washington, Pa. native George Parros’ moustache. Check that, there WAS George Parros’ moustache. That’s because the Anaheim Ducks forward shaved off his trademark facial hair for charity in early November. Parros, along with 13 of his teammates, will now spend George Parros the entire month of November re-growing his moustache as part of “Movember”, an annual initiative that raises funds and awareness for cancers which affect men. “My teammates and I are excited to join this great cause,” Parros told the Los Angeles Times. “It’s a fun way to bring awareness to cancers affecting men. I look forward to seeing what kind of ‘staches our team can produce.”

‘MOUSTACHE BOY’ SHAVES

Five weeks into the 2010-11 season, the St. Louis Blues had lost just once in regulation, topping the Central Division with a 7-1-2 record through Nov. 4. Leading the way for the Blues — and this will come as no surprise to Penguins fans — has been goaltender and prized offseason acquisition Jaroslav Halak. Halak has picked up right where he left off in the 2010 postseason when he played for Montreal, ranking at the top of the charts in several categories. Through his first nine starts, Halak carried a 7-1-1 record, a 1.53 goals-against average which ranked 4th overall, a .940 save percentage that stood sixth-best and a league-leading (tied) three shutouts.

RON BURKLE Ron Burkle has now added a new arena — Pittsburgh’s CONSOL Energy Center — to his tremendous list of accomplishments in the business world. Burkle, widely recognized as one of the preeminent investors in retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 12th season as co-owner of the Penguins. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his role in negotiations for the new arena deal. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is co-chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League and the Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy. He has received numerous awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year and the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year award.

MARIO LEMIEUX Mario Lemieux will always be remembered for the magic he created on the ice, but one of the crowning achievements of his remarkable business career came this season — the opening of CONSOL Energy Center, home of the Penguins and Pittsburgh’s new multi-purpose entertainment venue. Even before the reality of CONSOL Energy Center, Lemieux and coowner Ron Burkle had turned the Penguins into a premier NHL franchise. The Penguins have been named No. 1 in Fan Relations by ESPN the Magazine, sold out a team-record 166 straight games, sold out every suite for three straight seasons and established records for local television ratings, merchandise sales and website hits. Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVPs trophies and two Conn Smythe Trophies as playoff MVP, in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $8 million for charity. DAVID MOREHOUSE Pittsburgh native David Morehouse was named CEO of the Penguins in September and leads the team into an exciting new era at CONSOL Energy Center. Morehouse had served as team president since 2007, overseeing ticket sales, marketing, corporate sales, communications and brand development, as well as representing the team in corporate relations and governmental affairs. Under his leadership the Penguins have become one of the top organizations in professional sports — ranked No. 1 in Fan Relations and No. 5 overall as a franchise among 122 pro teams in North America by ESPN The Magazine. As team president, Morehouse implemented a brand strategy that featured a new commitment to marketing, fan interaction and community outreach, as well as a targeted focus on the team’s young fan demographic. Morehouse grew up in the Beechview section on Pittsburgh. He attended the Community College of Allegheny County and Duquesne University, and received a master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. RAY SHERO Ray Shero, 48, was named GM of the Pittsburgh Penguins on May 25, 2006. His fresh ideas and calm but firm management style helped transform the Penguins from a team that did not qualify for the playoffs in 2005-06 to one that reached the Stanley Cup Final in 2007-08 and won the Cup in 2008-09. One of his first acts as GM was to declare a goal of building a team that could compete for championships on a yearly basis. He revamped the team’s hockey operations staff and structure, upgraded professional and amateur scouting, added a team operations director and opened new lines of communication with the business side of the organization. Ray built his hockey sense and managerial style during 14 seasons as an NHL assistant general manager — six with the Ottawa Senators and eight with the Nashville Predators. Shero played college hockey at St. Lawrence University and was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in 1982. He spent seven years as a player agent before making the transition to the front office. The native of St. Paul, Minn. is actively involved with USA Hockey and is a member of the USA Hockey National Team Advisory Group. Ray and his wife, Karen, and their two sons reside in Upper St. Clair.

JASON BOTTERILL Jason Botterill enters his second full season as assistant general manager after being promoted to his current position on May 22, 2009 by general manager Ray Shero. As assistant GM, Botterill works closely with Shero on all hockeyrelated matters, including scouting, player development and contract negotiations. He also manages hockey operations and acts as GM for the club’s top-minor league affiliate, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League. Prior to his promotion, Botterill, 34, worked two seasons as director of hockey administration with the Penguins. Before joining Pittsburgh, Botterill worked with NHL Central Registry and also scouted for the Dallas Stars. Botterill was a first-round draft pick (20th overall) by Dallas in 1994 and played 88 NHL games over six seasons with Dallas, Atlanta, Calgary and Buffalo. A native of Edmonton who grew up in Winnipeg, Botterill played four seasons at the University of Michigan, where he earned his MBA, and helped lead the Wolverines to the NCAA title in 1996. He also played for Team Canada at the World Junior Championships in 1994, 1995 and 1996, helping his team win gold medals in all three tournaments. DAN BYLSMA In just one-plus seasons behind the bench, Dan Bylsma has already become one of the most successful coaches in Penguins’ history. After being promoted to Penguins head coach in February 2009, Bylsma, 40, directed the team to its third Stanley Cup in franchise history — a feat previously accomplished by legendary coaches “Badger” Bob Johnson and Scott Bowman. In the process Bylsma became the 14th rookie head coach, and just the fourth in the past 50 years, to capture the Stanley Cup. Of those 14, only Montreal’s Al MacNeil (1970-71) took over mid-season. Bylsma played nine NHL seasons as a right winger with Los Angeles and Anaheim from 1995-2004. He played 429 NHL regular-season games, recording 19 goals and 62 points, and also played in the 2003 Stanley Cup Final with Anaheim. Bylsma was an assistant coach at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton for two seasons from 2006-08 and was named head coach at the start of the 2008-09 season. He went 35-16-1-2 in 54 games with WB/S before being promoted to Pittsburgh. He played four seasons of college hockey at Bowling Green. Dan and his wife, Mary Beth, have one son and reside in the North Hills.

TONY GRANATO Tony Granato, 46, begins his second season on the Penguins’ coaching staff. Granato, among his many responsibilities, works with the Penguins’ forwards and penalty killing units. He oversaw the NHL’s ninth-ranked penalty killing group with an 84.1-percent success rate, and second best on the road at 85.3 percent. Prior to joining the Penguins, Granato spent six seasons behind the bench for the Colorado Avalanche and served two stints as Avalanche head coach from 2002-04 and 2008-09. Granato compiled a 215-104-17-16 record and led Colorado to a Northwest Division title in 2003. Granato played 13 seasons in the NHL with the NY Rangers, Los Angeles and San Jose. In 1997, he was the recipient of the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy for overcoming a near career-ending brain injury. In 773 career games, the feisty forward posted 248 goals, 492 points and 1,425 penalty minutes. He appeared in 79 career postseason games and helped lead Los Angeles to a Stanley Cup Final berth in 1993. Granato played four years at the University of Wisconsin and was inducted into the Badgers’ Hall of Fame in 2000. Granato also played for the U.S. National team in 1987-88 and represented his country in the 1988 Olympic Games in Calgary. TODD REIRDEN Todd Reirden, 39, joined Pittsburgh’s coaching staff on July 31, 2010 after coaching with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins the previous two seasons. Reirden, an NHL defenseman for parts of five seasons, works closely with the team’s defensemen. Reirden, completed his first full season as WB/S head coach in 200910, leading a young and inexperienced team to an impressive 41-34-2-3 record, finishing third in the East Division, and a berth in the Calder Cup playoffs. Prior to joining the Penguins organization, Reirden spent one season as an assistant coach with the Bowling Green Falcons (CCHA) — his alma mater. He was a teammate of Bylsma’s during the 1990-91 and 1991-92 seasons at Bowling Green. Selected by New Jersey in the 12th round (242nd overall) of the 1990 NHL Enrty Draft, Reirden played professionally for 13 seasons, retiring after the 2006-07 campaign with Graz EC of the Austrian Hockey League. He appeared in 183 NHL games with Edmonton, St. Louis, Atlanta and Phoenix, recording 46 points (11+35) and 181 penalty minutes. Todd and his wife, Shelby, have one son.

GILLES MELOCHE Former NHL goaltender Gilles Meloche is in his fifth season as the Penguins’ full-time goaltending coach and 25th with the organization. Meloche has been instrumental in developing Marc-Andre Fleury into a Stanley Cup-winning netminder. Meloche served as a Penguins scout from 1989-2006 and also doubled as a goaltending coach/consultant during much of that time. He was also part of the staff when the Penguins won Stanley Cups in 1991 and 1992. A native of Montreal, Quebec, Meloche spent 18 seasons as an NHL goaltender with Chicago, California, Cleveland, Minnesota and Pittsburgh. He played the final three seasons of his career in Pittsburgh following a 1985 trade. Meloche appeared in 788 NHL games during his career, posting a record of 270-351-131 with a 3.64 goals-against average. In 45 career playoff games, he posted a 21-19 record and a 3.48 goals-against average. Gilles and his wife, Sophie, reside in Pittsburgh. His son, Eric, is a pro player who was a member of the Penguins organization from 2000-04.

OUR NEW HOME CONSOL Energy Center opened in August, 2010 as Pittsburgh’s new multi-purpose entertainment venue — home of the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins as well as other professional and collegiate sports, concerts, children’s shows, skating shows and more. It replaces the old Civic Arena/ Mellon Arena, which had operated since 1961 and was home of the Penguins from their inception in CONSOL Energy Center represents an exciting new era for 1967. It was the oldest arena in the the city, the region and the Pittsburgh Penguins. National Hockey League. “CONSOL Energy Center represents an exciting new era for the city, the region and the Pittsburgh Penguins,” said David Morehouse, CEO of the hockey team. “With open concourses, comfortable seating, cutting-edge technology, a state-of-the-art scoreboard and sound system, and an extensive array of food and beverage options, it is a spectacular symbol for the Pittsburgh of the 21st century.” CONSOL Energy Center was completed on time and under budget, thanks to the combined efforts of architectural firms Populous and Astorino; the owner’s representative, ICON; the construction company, PJ Dick/Hunt; and the excellent construction workers and skilled trade workers of Western Pennsylvania. The new arena seats 18,087 for hockey, 19,000 for basketball and almost 20,000 for concerts. It is a green building and is the first NHL arena to attain LEED Gold certification. Even before its doors had opened, CONSOL Energy Center landed commitments from shows that would have bypassed the old arena — the 2012 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament first and second rounds, the 2013 NCAA Frozen Four, and back-to-back concerts by music legend Paul McCartney. McCartney, who first played Pittsburgh with the Beatles in 1964 but hadn’t performed here since 1990, christened the new arena with a grand opening concert on August 18, 2010. In its first season of operation, CONSOL Energy Center also will be home to the Pittsburgh Power of the Arena Football League — bringing indoor football back to the city for the first time in almost 20 years. A funding plan for the new arena project was completed in March, 2007, thanks to the combined efforts of Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell, Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato and Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl, among others. The Sports & Exhibition Authority owns the building on behalf of the city and county, and the Penguins have the lease. The new arena is managed by SMG, with Jay Roberts serving as general manager.

COMMUNITY UPDATE THE PITTSBURGH PENGUINS AND ROCK AND WRAP IT UP! FIGHT HUNGER IN PITTSBURGH The Pittsburgh Penguins have teamed up with the Rock and Wrap It Up! program this season to provide unpurchased concession food at CONSOL Energy Center to hungry people in our local community. Rock and Wrap It Up! is a nationwide food recovery program that collects uneaten food from concerts, sporting events, schools, and hotels; then delivers it to local food banks and other places of need. The NHL is the first sports league to have all of its teams participate in the program. Rock and Wrap It Up! works like this: ARAMARK prepares the food before a game or event, then following the game or event immediately packages leftovers to ensure all health codes are met. The food is stored in a cooler overnight and picked up the next morning by the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. The Penguins donate a wide variety of food; everything from hot dogs and pizza from the concession stands to scalloped potatoes and steak from premium seating. Throughout the month of October, the Penguins collected more than 4,700 pounds of food, which provided over 3,600 meals to hungry people in the community. ARAMARK General Manager Jim Carter is excited to be involved in the program. “It’s an honor for ARAMARK and our partner, the Pittsburgh Penguins, to be a part of this program. It’s all about giving back to the community and the Rock and Wrap It Up! program truly makes a difference in people’s lives.”

On Sunday, October 10, sixteen youth hockey teams from the Pittsburgh Amateur Hockey League (PAHL) in the Squirt age group (age 9 - 10) participated in a shootout competition at CONSOL Energy Center. The event was videotaped to be shown in episodes at Penguins home games. The first round of competition featured heats between two teams striving to advance to the next round. Sixteen teams fielded five skaters shooting against the opposing team’s goalie. After each team competition, an individual shooter and goaltender squared off against the opposing team’s individual tandem for a one-on-one competition. Each winning team and pair of individuals advanced to the next round of eight teams/tandems. The format repeated as teams and individual pairs advanced through the quarter-final heats to move on to the semi-finals. Robust competition marked the semifinal round for teams and individual tandems. The remaining two teams and individual tandems then had to “leave it all on the ice” in vying for the championship. Early in the second intermission of each Penguins home game the various heats in the competition will be featured. Enjoy each episode.

PERFECT OCTOBER HAS WB/S AT THE TOP OF THE AHL The Pittsburgh Penguins had a pretty nice October. After the first month of the 2010-11 season, they were tied for first place in the Atlantic Division. But the Penguins’ top minorleague affiliate in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton had an even better month — they were perfect. The WB/S Penguins are off to an incredible 8-0 start. “It was an awesome October from the start all the way through” Penguins center Joe Vitale said. “I think the whole team is very excited with the group that we have.” No single Penguin was responsible for the team’s success. Nearly every player recorded a point, and goaltenders John Curry and Brad Thiessen were equally strong. Curry and Thiessen alternated starts, and combined for a 1.84 goals-against average and a .935 save percentage. Those gaudy numbers earned the duo co-winners of the Reebok/AHL Goaltender of the Month Award. “My focus coming out of the summer and into the year was to have a good start to the season,” Curry said. “To get the award feels great Anthony Fabrikant, AFC Media Photography

WB/S led the AHL with a success rate of 93 percent rate. But really, that number could look like 100 percent, because even though the Penguins allowed three power play goals (on 43 chances), they scored three shorthanded goals to even things out. “Our penalty kill has been our bread and butter throughout the early part of the season,” Curry said. “We haven’t let up many goals. We are winning games in so many different ways,” Curry said. “It seems like we have an all-around group that can step up to whatever challenge or opponent we face.” Both players credit first-year head coach John Hynes for the team’s early achievements. “Our practices, more than anything else, have been very disciplined and very

organized,” Curry said. “They have been very clear and concise as to what their message is and how they want us to play. That makes it easy for us as players to respond to them. TAG-A-KID In the event a parent and child might be separated at a CONSOL Energy Center event, parents can register their child with the Tag-A-Kid program. A wristband with the parent’s seat location and contact number will be given to the child. Registration is available at the Guest Services office located outside section 104.

VIDEO CAMERAS Use of video or audio recording equipment is strictly prohibited. CONSOL Energy Center reserves the right to confiscate any tape or film and remove the patron from the building.

WHEELCHAIRS A limited number of wheelchairs are available for transporting guests that are disabled to their seating location. Guests can be transported from the gates to their seats. If a wheelchair is needed for the duration of the event, guests must supply their own wheelchairs. Wheelchairs cannot be reserved in advance. PITTSBURGH HORNETS — A WINNING ORGANIZATION ON AND OFF THE ICE The Pittsburgh Hornets Midget Major (18-and-under) team is widely-recognized as one of the top amateur hockey programs in the country and is the preeminent AAA hockey association in Western Pennsylvania. Following their run at the USA Hockey National Championships a season ago, the Pittsburgh Hornets, much like their insect surname, have produced quite a buzz. Upon capturing the tournament crown at the Motor City Cup in September, the club continues to sting the opposition, emerging triumphant in 15 of their last 20 contests. Competing as members of the Tier 1 Elite Hockey League, the Hornets face off against 24 evenly-talented Midget Major programs from across the United States. Entering the month of November, the U18 Pittsburgh Hornets were the fourth-ranked Tier 1 Elite team the country. Which is no surprise at all to Hornets head coach Christopher Stern. “We pride ourselves on developing talented kids with great character and a lot of competitive fire,” Stern said. “That is our brand.” Throughout their history, the Hornets have ushered several players to the next level of hockey. Over the last decade, nearly 120 Hornets have played collegiate hockey, with 11 alums being claimed in the National Hockey League Entry Draft. Many players have become legitimate NHL prospects after leaving the Pittsburgh Hornets, a testament to the program’s effectiveness. However, advancing players to the college ranks remains the definitive objective for the organization. “Our primary goal is to develop young men — on and off the ice,” Stern said. “Currently, there are more players on our roster above a 4.0 grade point average than below a 3.0. “An ultimate accomplishment for our program would be to have the option of picking any college game on the schedule — no matter the teams in competition — and seeing at least one of our guys on the ice.” Maintaining a first-class institution of higher hockey learning can be difficult, but the Hornets have managed to make the task look easy. The dedication and level of commitment from parents, coaches, and current or former players have driven the Hornets to success on a regular basis.

“First and foremost, we want to surround ourselves with good people and good young men,” Stern said. Beyond that, the Hornets have utilized a strong work ethic in practice and training with the expectation for each season remaining the same. “The annual goal for our team is to earn a ticket to the national tournament,” Stern said. “When we earn a trip to nationals, no matter the result, we display our Pittsburgh pride.” In doing so, the Hornets have been fortunate to advance on the brightest amateur hockey stages in the country. The coaching staff has borrowed a quote from Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin — ‘It’s not about what you are capable of, it’s about what you’re willing to do.’ Much like their predecessors, current players will work hard to ensure that footprints will be left behind for future generations of young men that wear the Hornets jersey. The effects of their efforts will prove to be everlasting.

A unique doubleheader featuring an American Hockey League game and an NCAA Division I game will be played as part of the Pittsburgh Penguins’ weeklong celebration of hockey in the week leading up to the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic.

THE PENGUINS GAME VAULT NOVEMBER 1, 1995 • PENGUINS 10, LIGHTNING 0 CIVIC ARENA The Pittsburgh Penguins filled up opponents’ nets like no other National Hockey League team during the 1995-96 campaign. Throughout the course of a season which saw the Penguins capture the Northeast Division title and advance to within one game of their third Stanley Cup Final appearance in six seasons, Pittsburgh tallied a league-best 362 goals, 36 more than second-place Colorado (326). Ten tallies from that league-leading figure came on Nov. 1, 1995 during an offensive barrage at the Civic Arena. Led by a seven-point night (1G-6A) from Mario Lemieux and two-goal efforts by Ron Francis, Jaromir Jagr and Tomas Sandstrom, the Penguins trounced the Francois Leroux sneaked a shot from the left point Tampa Bay Lightning, 10-0. past Bergeron for his first-ever NHL goal. Pittsburgh wasted little time getting the fireworks underway, as Francis tallied off a Lemieux feed just 4:50 into the contest to make it 1-0. Lemieux and Francis struck again 4:04 minutes later, teaming together to set up Sandstrom’s first tally of the evening, the second of five power play goals the Penguins would record. On that goal, Francis became the 16th player in NHL history to record 800 career assists. Sandstrom and Jagr continued the opening-period scoring spree against Jean-Claude Bergeron when they scored 17 seconds apart late in the frame to give the Penguins a 4-0 advantage after 20 minutes. Lemieux (4A) and Francis (1G-3A) tied club records for points in a period, while Lemieux’s four helpers also tied a club record for one period. Things didn’t get much better for the Lightning in the second period, as 5:02 into the frame Francois Leroux, a fan-favorite more for his fighting skills than goal-scoring ability, sneaked a shot from the left point past Bergeron for his first-ever NHL goal, and Bryan Smolinski scored a minute and a half later to put Pittsburgh ahead 6-0 after two. Pittsburgh continued to pour the offense on Bergeron in the final period, as Jagr (again), Petr Nedved, Francis (again) and Lemieux each lit the lamp to finish off a 10-0 victory that established a club record for largest margin of victory in a shutout. Lost in all the goal scoring exploits was the performance of Ken Wregget in goal. Wregget stopped all 27 shots he faced to pick up his fourth career shutout and second with Pittsburgh. 79
