AROUND THE NHL Philadelphia Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren has built one of the National Hockey League’s top forward units. On Nov. 8, Holmgren took another step towards keeping as much of that group together for as long as possible by locking up center Claude Giroux to a three-year contract extension. At just 22-years-old, Giroux has established himself as one of the Flyers’ top players, averaging nearly a point per contest with Claude Giroux 14 points (7G-7A) through his first 15 games. The 2006 first-round draft pick (22nd overall) led the NHL with three shorthanded goals as of Nov. 9, while his three game-winning tallies were also tied for the league lead.

FLYERS INK ANOTHER CORE MEMBER

Los Angeles Kings forward Ryan Smyth, who is often referred to as “Captain Canada” because he spent a lengthy tenure as the captain of the Edmonton Oilers earlier this decade, achieved a personal milestone on Nov. 7 when he became the 257th player in NHL history to appear in 1,000 games when the Kings took on the Nashville Predators. The 34-year-old power forward had 40 friends and family Ryan Smyth in attendance at STAPLES Center on his milestone night. He didn’t disappoint, scoring a goal to help the Kings defeat the Predators, 4-1. “There are three things I thought of, coming in the league,” Smyth told the Los Angeles Times. “Playing in the NHL, winning the Stanley Cup — obviously everybody dreams of that — and playing 1,000 games. I think it’s an honor to be in the NHL, and I’m also flattered.”

New York Rangers enforcer Derek Boogaard is highly regarded around the NHL as being the best at what he does — fighting. On Nov. 9 against the Washington Capitals, Boogaard used his hands for another reason — to score his first goal since Jan. 7, 2006. Boogaard tallied his third career goal — and first in 234 Derek Boogaard games — when he converted a Washington turnover by streaking down the left wing and ripping a slap shot stick side past Capitals netminder Michal Neuvirth to give the Rangers a brief 3-2 lead. Prior to scoring that goal, Boogaard had moved within 21 games of tying former New Jersey Devils blueliner Ken Daneyko’s NHL record 255-game goalless stretch.

RON BURKLE Ron Burkle has now added a new arena — Pittsburgh’s CONSOL Energy Center — to his tremendous list of accomplishments in the business world. Burkle, widely recognized as one of the preeminent investors in retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 12th season as co-owner of the Penguins. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his role in negotiations for the new arena deal. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is co-chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League and the Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy. He has received numerous awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year and the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year award.

MARIO LEMIEUX Mario Lemieux will always be remembered for the magic he created on the ice, but one of the crowning achievements of his remarkable business career came this season — the opening of CONSOL Energy Center, home of the Penguins and Pittsburgh’s new multi-purpose entertainment venue. Even before the reality of CONSOL Energy Center, Lemieux and coowner Ron Burkle had turned the Penguins into a premier NHL franchise. The Penguins have been named No. 1 in Fan Relations by ESPN the Magazine, sold out a team-record 166 straight games, sold out every suite for three straight seasons and established records for local television ratings, merchandise sales and website hits. Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVPs trophies and two Conn Smythe Trophies as playoff MVP, in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $8 million for charity. DAVID MOREHOUSE Pittsburgh native David Morehouse was named CEO of the Penguins in September and leads the team into an exciting new era at CONSOL Energy Center. Morehouse had served as team president since 2007, overseeing ticket sales, marketing, corporate sales, communications and brand development, as well as representing the team in corporate relations and governmental affairs. Under his leadership the Penguins have become one of the top organizations in professional sports — ranked No. 1 in Fan Relations and No. 5 overall as a franchise among 122 pro teams in North America by ESPN The Magazine. As team president, Morehouse implemented a brand strategy that featured a new commitment to marketing, fan interaction and community outreach, as well as a targeted focus on the team’s young fan demographic. Morehouse grew up in the Beechview section on Pittsburgh. He attended the Community College of Allegheny County and Duquesne University, and received a master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. RAY SHERO Ray Shero, 48, was named GM of the Pittsburgh Penguins on May 25, 2006. His fresh ideas and calm but firm management style helped transform the Penguins from a team that did not qualify for the playoffs in 2005-06 to one that reached the Stanley Cup Final in 2007-08 and won the Cup in 2008-09. One of his first acts as GM was to declare a goal of building a team that could compete for championships on a yearly basis. He revamped the team’s hockey operations staff and structure, upgraded professional and amateur scouting, added a team operations director and opened new lines of communication with the business side of the organization. Ray built his hockey sense and managerial style during 14 seasons as an NHL assistant general manager — six with the Ottawa Senators and eight with the Nashville Predators. Shero played college hockey at St. Lawrence University and was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in 1982. He spent seven years as a player agent before making the transition to the front office. The native of St. Paul, Minn. is actively involved with USA Hockey and is a member of the USA Hockey National Team Advisory Group. Ray and his wife, Karen, and their two sons reside in Upper St. Clair.

JASON BOTTERILL Jason Botterill enters his second full season as assistant general manager after being promoted to his current position on May 22, 2009 by general manager Ray Shero. As assistant GM, Botterill works closely with Shero on all hockeyrelated matters, including scouting, player development and contract negotiations. He also manages hockey operations and acts as GM for the club’s top-minor league affiliate, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League. Prior to his promotion, Botterill, 34, worked two seasons as director of hockey administration with the Penguins. Before joining Pittsburgh, Botterill worked with NHL Central Registry and also scouted for the Dallas Stars. Botterill was a first-round draft pick (20th overall) by Dallas in 1994 and played 88 NHL games over six seasons with Dallas, Atlanta, Calgary and Buffalo. A native of Edmonton who grew up in Winnipeg, Botterill played four seasons at the University of Michigan, where he earned his MBA, and helped lead the Wolverines to the NCAA title in 1996. He also played for Team Canada at the World Junior Championships in 1994, 1995 and 1996, helping his team win gold medals in all three tournaments. DAN BYLSMA In just one-plus seasons behind the bench, Dan Bylsma has already become one of the most successful coaches in Penguins’ history. After being promoted to Penguins head coach in February 2009, Bylsma, 40, directed the team to its third Stanley Cup in franchise history — a feat previously accomplished by legendary coaches “Badger” Bob Johnson and Scott Bowman. In the process Bylsma became the 14th rookie head coach, and just the fourth in the past 50 years, to capture the Stanley Cup. Of those 14, only Montreal’s Al MacNeil (1970-71) took over mid-season. Bylsma played nine NHL seasons as a right winger with Los Angeles and Anaheim from 1995-2004. He played 429 NHL regular-season games, recording 19 goals and 62 points, and also played in the 2003 Stanley Cup Final with Anaheim. Bylsma was an assistant coach at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton for two seasons from 2006-08 and was named head coach at the start of the 2008-09 season. He went 35-16-1-2 in 54 games with WB/S before being promoted to Pittsburgh. He played four seasons of college hockey at Bowling Green. Dan and his wife, Mary Beth, have one son and reside in the North Hills.

TONY GRANATO Tony Granato, 46, begins his second season on the Penguins’ coaching staff. Granato, among his many responsibilities, works with the Penguins’ forwards and penalty killing units. He oversaw the NHL’s ninth-ranked penalty killing group with an 84.1-percent success rate, and second best on the road at 85.3 percent. Prior to joining the Penguins, Granato spent six seasons behind the bench for the Colorado Avalanche and served two stints as Avalanche head coach from 2002-04 and 2008-09. Granato compiled a 215-104-17-16 record and led Colorado to a Northwest Division title in 2003. Granato played 13 seasons in the NHL with the NY Rangers, Los Angeles and San Jose. In 1997, he was the recipient of the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy for overcoming a near career-ending brain injury. In 773 career games, the feisty forward posted 248 goals, 492 points and 1,425 penalty minutes. He appeared in 79 career postseason games and helped lead Los Angeles to a Stanley Cup Final berth in 1993. Granato played four years at the University of Wisconsin and was inducted into the Badgers’ Hall of Fame in 2000. TODD REIRDEN Todd Reirden, 39, joined Pittsburgh’s coaching staff on July 31, 2010 after coaching with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins the previous two seasons. Reirden, an NHL defenseman for parts of five seasons, works closely with the team’s defensemen. Reirden, completed his first full season as WB/S head coach in 200910, leading a young and inexperienced team to an impressive 41-34-2-3 record, finishing third in the East Division, and a berth in the Calder Cup playoffs. Prior to joining the Penguins organization, Reirden spent one season as an assistant coach with the Bowling Green Falcons (CCHA) — his alma mater. He was a teammate of Bylsma’s during the 1990-91 and 1991-92 seasons at Bowling Green. Selected by New Jersey in the 12th round (242nd overall) of the 1990 NHL Enrty Draft, Reirden played professionally for 13 seasons, retiring after the 2006-07 campaign with Graz EC of the Austrian Hockey League. He appeared in 183 NHL games with Edmonton, St. Louis, Atlanta and Phoenix, recording 46 points (11+35) and 181 penalty minutes. Todd and his wife, Shelby, have one son.

GILLES MELOCHE Former NHL goaltender Gilles Meloche is in his fifth season as the Penguins’ full-time goaltending coach and 25th with the organization. Meloche has been instrumental in developing Marc-Andre Fleury into a Stanley Cup-winning netminder. Meloche served as a Penguins scout from 1989-2006 and also doubled as a goaltending coach/consultant during much of that time. He was also part of the staff when the Penguins won Stanley Cups in 1991 and 1992. A native of Montreal, Quebec, Meloche spent 18 seasons as an NHL goaltender with Chicago, California, Cleveland, Minnesota and Pittsburgh. He played the final three seasons of his career in Pittsburgh following a 1985 trade. Meloche appeared in 788 NHL games during his career, posting a record of 270-351-131 with a 3.64 goals-against average. In 45 career playoff games, he posted a 21-19 record and a 3.48 goals-against average. Gilles and his wife, Sophie, reside in Pittsburgh. His son, Eric, is a pro player who was a member of the Penguins organization from 2000-04.

OUR NEW HOME CONSOL Energy Center opened in August, 2010 as Pittsburgh’s new multi-purpose entertainment venue — home of the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins as well as other professional and collegiate sports, concerts, children’s shows, skating shows and more. It replaces the old Civic Arena/ Mellon Arena, which had operated since 1961 and was home of the Penguins from their inception in CONSOL Energy Center represents an exciting new era for 1967. It was the oldest arena in the the city, the region and the Pittsburgh Penguins. National Hockey League. “CONSOL Energy Center represents an exciting new era for the city, the region and the Pittsburgh Penguins,” said David Morehouse, CEO of the hockey team. “With open concourses, comfortable seating, cutting-edge technology, a state-of-the-art scoreboard and sound system, and an extensive array of food and beverage options, it is a spectacular symbol for the Pittsburgh of the 21st century.” CONSOL Energy Center was completed on time and under budget, thanks to the combined efforts of architectural firms Populous and Astorino; the owner’s representative, ICON; the construction company, PJ Dick/Hunt; and the excellent construction workers and skilled trade workers of Western Pennsylvania. The new arena seats 18,087 for hockey, 19,000 for basketball and almost 20,000 for concerts. It is a green building and is the first NHL arena to attain LEED Gold certification. Even before its doors had opened, CONSOL Energy Center landed commitments from shows that would have bypassed the old arena — the 2012 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament first and second rounds, the 2013 NCAA Frozen Four, and back-to-back concerts by music legend Paul McCartney. McCartney, who first played Pittsburgh with the Beatles in 1964 but hadn’t performed here since 1990, christened the new arena with a grand opening concert on August 18, 2010. In its first season of operation, CONSOL Energy Center also will be home to the Pittsburgh Power of the Arena Football League — bringing indoor football back to the city for the first time in almost 20 years. A funding plan for the new arena project was completed in March, 2007, thanks to the combined efforts of Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell, Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato and Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl, among others. The Sports & Exhibition Authority owns the building on behalf of the city and county, and the Penguins have the lease. The new arena is managed by SMG, with Jay Roberts serving as general manager.

COMMUNITY UPDATE ANNUAL PENGUINS BOOSTER CLUB CHARITY ORNAMENT SALE BEGINS NOVEMBER 15 For the fifth year, the Pittsburgh Penguins Booster Club will sell an annual charity holiday ornament for the benefit of the Autism Society of Pittsburgh. This season, the Penguins teamed up with Wendell August Forge to create a handcrafted ornament set. This set includes three icicle ornaments crafted in aluminum by Wendell August Forge’s artisans. Each ornament is tied with a festive red ribbon and each set is sold in a custom box. Proceeds from the sale of the charity ornament set will benefit the Autism Society of Pittsburgh, an organization in the Pittsburgh area dedicated to improving the lives of those affected by autism. The society uses funds to increase public awareness about the disease, to help those with the disease find appropriate care, and to provide the most recent information regarding treatment, education, and research about the disease to the local community. Fans may purchase the 2010 Penguins Booster Club Charity Ornament Set during Penguins home games beginning Monday, November 15. The ornament will be available for purchase at select locations on the lower and upper concourses of CONSOL Energy Center. Normally a handcrafted ornament set would be prohibitively expensive, but our friends at Wendell August Forge donated the set up and die creation for this set. Because of their generosity, we are able to offer the ornament set for $20! On Sunday, October 10, sixteen youth hockey teams from the Pittsburgh Amateur Hockey League (PAHL) in the Squirt age group (age 9 - 10) participated in a shootout competition at CONSOL Energy Center. The event was videotaped to be shown in episodes at Penguins home games. The first round of competition featured heats between two teams striving to advance to the next round. Sixteen teams fielded five skaters shooting against the opposing team’s goalie. After each team competition, an individual shooter and goaltender squared off against the opposing team’s individual tandem for a one-on-one competition. Each winning team and pair of individuals advanced to the next round of eight teams/tandems. The format repeated as teams and individual pairs advanced through the quarter-final heats to move on to the semi-finals. Robust competition marked the semi-final round for teams and individual tandems. The remaining two teams and individual tandems then had to “leave it all on the ice” in vying for the championship. Early in the second intermission of each Penguins home game the various heats in the competition will be featured. Enjoy each episode.

PENS PROFILE ARRON ASHAM

Hockey enables some to see the world. It’s enabled winger Arron Asham to get a very specific look at the northeast United States. Asham has skated for four-fifths of the NHL’s Atlantic Division: the New York Islanders, New Jersey, Philadelphia and now Pittsburgh. He’s been on both sides of heated games between heated rivals. Asham’s chippy style, in fact, helped put some of those games on the boil.

“This isn’t my first time switching sides,” Asham said before the Penguins hosted Philadelphia on Oct. 29. “I’m sure it’ll be a little awkward. Those guys know me pretty well, and I know them pretty well. I’m going to go out there and play my game, all friendship aside, for those 60 minutes. Play the way I do against any other team.” Asham played for the Flyers last season, racking up 10 goals and 14 assists in 72 games. He then contributed four goals and three assists in 23 playoff games as the Flyers went all the way to the Stanley Cup Final before losing to Chicago in six games. Asham missed this season’s first nine games with an upper-body injury. He had two assists in his first six games upon returning. The 5-foot-11, 210-pound Manitoba native had his best campaign statistically in 2002-03 with the Islanders. Asham got 15 goals and 19 helpers for 34 points, setting continued on page 47

The Penguins displayed inconsistency through the season’s salad days. They stood 7-7-1 after 15 games, posting a four-game win streak at one point but going a disappointing 2-4 at CONSOL Energy Center. “It has a lot to do with confidence,” Asham said. “Once you get that confidence every day, you’re going to the rink knowing that you’re going to play well. A lot has to do with practice, too. Practice makes perfect. You play as you practice. We’re a very young team. It’s a matter of confidence, getting our legs under us. We’re not too worried yet.” The Penguins’ early results didn’t frustrate Asham. Not being able to participate did.

Asham is known as a gritty, third-line player, but he possesses the skills to get the occasional shifts with Sidney Crosby or Evgeni Malkin.

“Especially coming to a new team,” he said. “You want to be out there playing. You want to show your teammates and the fans that you’re here to play hard, to be a part of this team. Being out the first month of the season was tough. But I feel good now.” Good enough to face the physical, emotional challenge that is a typical Atlantic Division game. “Some of those Devils-Flyers games were very intense,” Asham remembered. “It seems every team in the Atlantic Division isn’t too fond of the others. VIDEO CAMERAS Use of video or audio recording equipment is strictly prohibited. CONSOL Energy Center reserves the right to confiscate any tape or film and remove the patron from the building.

WHEELCHAIRS A limited number of wheelchairs are available for transporting guests that are disabled to their seating location. Guests can be transported from the gates to their seats. PITTSBURGH HORNETS — A WINNING ORGANIZATION ON AND OFF THE ICE The Pittsburgh Hornets Midget Major (18-and-under) team is widely-recognized as one of the top amateur hockey programs in the country and is the preeminent AAA hockey association in Western Pennsylvania. Following their run at the USA Hockey National Championships a season ago, the Pittsburgh Hornets, much like their insect surname, have produced quite a buzz. Upon capturing the tournament crown at the Motor City Cup in September, the club continues to sting the opposition, emerging triumphant in 15 of their last 20 contests. Competing as members of the Tier 1 Elite Hockey League, the Hornets face off against 24 evenly-talented Midget Major programs from across the United States. Entering the month of November, the U18 Pittsburgh Hornets were the fourth-ranked Tier 1 Elite team the country. Which is no surprise at all to Hornets head coach Christopher Stern. “We pride ourselves on developing talented kids with great character and a lot of competitive fire,” Stern said. “That is our brand.” Throughout their history, the Hornets have ushered several players to the next level of hockey. Over the last decade, nearly 120 Hornets have played collegiate hockey, with 11 alums being claimed in the National Hockey League Entry Draft. Many players have become legitimate NHL prospects after leaving the Pittsburgh Hornets, a testament to the program’s effectiveness. However, advancing players to the college ranks remains the definitive objective for the organization. “Our primary goal is to develop young men — on and off the ice,” Stern said. “Currently, there are more players on our roster above a 4.0 grade point average than below a 3.0. “An ultimate accomplishment for our program would be to have the option of picking any college game on the schedule — no matter the teams in competition — and seeing at least one of our guys on the ice.” Maintaining a first-class institution of higher hockey learning can be difficult, but the Hornets have managed to make the task look easy. The dedication and level of commitment from parents, coaches, and current or former players have driven the Hornets to success on a regular basis.

“First and foremost, we want to surround ourselves with good people and good young men,” Stern said. Beyond that, the Hornets have utilized a strong work ethic in practice and training with the expectation for each season remaining the same. “The annual goal for our team is to earn a ticket to the national tournament,” Stern said. “When we earn a trip to nationals, no matter the result, we display our Pittsburgh pride.” In doing so, the Hornets have been fortunate to advance on the brightest amateur hockey stages in the country. The coaching staff has borrowed a quote from Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin — ‘It’s not about what you are capable of, it’s about what you’re willing to do.’ Much like their predecessors, current players will work hard to ensure that footprints will be left behind for future generations of young men that wear the Hornets jersey. The effects of their efforts will prove to be everlasting.

THE PENGUINS GAME VAULT MAY 9, 1992 • PENGUINS 5, RANGERS 4 CIVIC ARENA The odds of the Pittsburgh Penguins defeating the New York Rangers and winning the 1992 Patrick Division Final series did not look good midway through Game Four. At that point, the Penguins trailed the series, 2-1, were down in the game, 3-1, and were playing without the services of injured stars Mario Lemieux and Joe Mullen, who were both knocked from the lineup earlier in the series. But there was a reason the Penguins were the defending Stanley Cup Champions. Led by Ron Francis, the Penguins began a comeback that would change the course of the series. Francis tallied with six seconds remaining Ron Francis led the comeback on May 9 that would change the course of the in the second period to draw the Penguins division final series against the Rangers. within one goal at 3-2 heading into the final period, setting the stage for a dramatic finish at the Civic Arena. New York captain Mark Messier re-established the Rangers’ two-goal advantage when he beat Tom Barrasso 46 seconds into the third period to put New York ahead, 4-2. As the crowd at the Civic Arena began feeling a bit restless, Francis re-stored the energy with an improbable goal at the 10:27 mark. Tired and looking for a line change, Francis skated the puck to within five feet of the New York blue line and sent a slap shot along the ice towards Rangers goaltender Mike Richter, who misplayed the dump-in attempt and allowed the puck to squeak between his legs to cut the Penguins deficit to 4-3. Penguins public address announcer John Barbero barely had time to announce Francis’ goal when Troy Loney sent the Igloo into bedlam by chasing Richter from the net by scoring just 1:25 minutes after Francis’ goal to send the game into overtime tied at 4-4. Francis completed his career night and evened the series at 2-2 by capping his hat trick with a fluke goal just 2:47 into the first overtime. The Rangers were attempting to break the puck out of the near corner of their own zone when Penguins defenseman Larry Murphy pinched in deep and stole the puck away. In one motion, Murphy sent a shot towards the slot, where it deflected off the stick of Francis and jumped behind John Vanbiesbrouck to give the Penguins a 5-4 overtime victory. Francis’ goal completely tilted the series in the Penguins’ favor. They followed their Game Four victory with 3-2 and 5-1 wins in Games Five and Six to wrap up a 4-2 series defeat of the Rangers on their way to a second straight Stanley Cup Championship.
