By: Mike Prisuta
AMONG THE BEST: Phoenix head coach Dave Tippett has piled up more wins than all but one of his contemporaries since beginning his tenure as an NHL bench boss in Dallas in 2002-03. Tippett, who spent Dave Tippett some time with the Penguins during his 12-year NHL playing career, had 366 victories since then as of Oct. 18, trailing only Mike Babcock (377). Babcock (Anaheim-Detroit), Tippett (Dallas-Phoenix) and the third-winningest head coach over the last nine seasons, Joel Quenneville (343, St. LouisColorado-Chicago) all changed jobs at least once while piling up the Ws.

IMMEDIATE RETURN: Columbus center Jeff Carter enjoyed a record-setting debut after joining the Blue Jackets via a trade with Philadelphia. Carter set a franchise record by winning 24 face-offs (in 31 tries) and also registered two assists in his first game for the Blue Jackets on Oct. 7 against Nashville.

Paul Maurice
SOME PEOPLE CALL HIM MAURICE: Carolina’s Paul Maurice became the seventh man in NHL history to coach 900 games with one franchise on Oct. 14. Next on the list is Toe Blake of Montreal (914). Al Arbour of the Islanders is No. 1 all-time in that department (1,500). SAME OLD BRUINS: Boston won a Stanley Cup despite converting on just 10 of 88 power-play opportunities (11.4 percent) last postseason. The Bruins scored on their first man-advantage of the season in 2011-12 and then went 0-for-19 on their next 19 power plays. ENCORE: Last year’s Calder Trophy winner, Hurricanes center Jeff Skinner, picked up where he left off as a rookie. Skinner had six points (2+4) in Carolina’s first four games.
MINNESOTA HIT MEN: Wild right winger Cal Clutterbuck has led the NHL in hits the past three Jeff Skinner seasons and last season finished with 336, a total that approached his NHL-record of 356 (2008-09). But through five games this season Clutterbuck was tied for second in Minnesota with right winger Devon Setoguchi with 14 hits, one behind Wild left winger Colton Gillies.

There’s a fundamental difference between Lexus and every other luxury brand, and it comes down to this—confidence. Confidence in some of the finest automobiles ever built. And confidence in great value. Perhaps that explains why more people have chosen Lexus over any other luxury brand 11 years in a row.4 This is the luxury of confidence. This is the pursuit of perfection.

MARIO
LEMIEUX CO-OWNER/CHAIRMAN
Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in National Hockey League history, is in his 13th season as co-owner and chairman of the board of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice — including a Stanley Cup championship in 2009. The Penguins entered the 2011-12 season having sold out 210 straight games (and counting) while setting new standards for local television ratings, merchandise sales, website traffic and social media. The ownership group also was proud to open the sparkling new CONSOL Energy Center last season — a state-of-the-art venue that was named Best NHL Arena in a survey of Sports Business Journal readers and was a finalist for Facility of the Year at the 2011 Sports Business Awards. Opening the doors of the arena in August, 2010, was the culmination of a 10-year quest by Lemieux and Burkle to ensure the long-term future of the Penguins in Pittsburgh. “Le Magnifique” was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. An immaculately gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033).

MARIOLEMIEUX
After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — thereby becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $8 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org. Mario and his wife, Nathalie, and their four children live in Sewickley.

RON
BURKLE CO-OWNER
Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 13th season as co-owner of the Penguins. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they have developed one of the most outstanding ownership groups in all of professional sports. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his essential role in negotiations for a new arena. Burkle was proud to be on hand when the Penguins opened CONSOL Energy Center with their first regular season game against the Philadelphia Flyers on Oct. 7, 2010. Under the leadership of Lemieux and Burkle, the Penguins have sold out every game for four-plus seasons and finished in the top 10 (out of 122 pro teams) in ESPN the Magazine’s “Ultimate Standings” in each of the past three years. The Penguins reached the Stanley Cup Final back-to-back in 2008 and 2009 winning the Cup in 2009. The team’s financial strength has enabled hockey management to spend to the salary cap, sign the team’s young core players to long-term contracts and put a competitive team on the ice year after year. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is co-chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League and the Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy. He has received numerous awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year and the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year award.

DAVID
MOREHOUSE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER & PRESIDENT
David Morehouse has quickly established himself as one of the most dynamic senior executives in the National Hockey League. Since being named President of the Penguins in April, 2007, Morehouse has reshaped the team’s image and strategic vision with an emphasis on branding, fan relations, youth marketing, community interaction, corporate outreach and innovative technology. He was given the additional responsibilities of Chief Executive Officer in September, 2010, and now oversees every aspect of the Penguins’ operations, reporting directly to co-owners Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle. Under Morehouse’s leadership, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in all of professional sports — ranked in the top 10 out of 122 pro teams in each of the past three years in ESPN The Magazine’s “Ultimate Standings.” The Penguins were named No. 3 overall out of 122 teams in Fan Relations in 2011. The team also was a finalist for Professional Sports Team of the Year at the 2011 Sports Business Awards, and the new CONSOL Energy Center was a finalist for Facility of the Year. The Penguins have sold out every game for four-plus seasons — a streak that had reached 210 games before the start of the 2011-12 season. They also have sold out all suites for three-plus seasons and set new standards for local TV ratings, website traffic, merchandise sales and social media. Morehouse himself was named 2011 CEO Communicator of the Year by the Pittsburgh Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America. The Pittsburgh native joined the Penguins in 2004 as Senior Consultant on the new arena project following a career in national politics that included stints at the White House, Pentagon and on Capitol Hill as well as key roles in two Presidential campaigns. Morehouse attended the Community College of Allegheny County and Duquesne University and received a master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. He and his wife, Vanessa, have three children and live in Sewickley Heights.

RAY
SHERO EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT & GENERAL MANAGER
Ray Shero, 49, is at the vanguard of the NHL’s new breed of general managers — steeped in family hockey tradition but on the cutting-edge of new technology and modernization in hockey operations, player relations and team management. Shero was named GM of the Penguins in May, 2006, and his fresh ideas, family-friendly environment and calm but firm management style helped transform a franchise that did not qualify for the playoffs from 2002-06 into one that regularly challenges for the Stanley Cup — reaching the Final in 2008 and winning the Cup in 2009. He’s been especially proactive in keeping the core of the team together, signing Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Marc-Andre Fleury, Jordan Staal, Brooks Orpik and Kris Letang, among others, to longterm contracts. One of his most successful moves came behind the bench during the 2008-09 season, when he promoted Dan Bylsma to head coach on Feb. 15, 2009. Bylsma went on to lead the Penguins to the Stanley Cup in 2009 and then won the Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s “Most Outstanding Coach” in 2011. Ray’s father, Fred, won two Stanley Cups as head coach of the Philadelphia Flyers in 1974-75, and the Sheros are one of the few father-son tandems to have their names on the Stanley Cup. Ray built his managerial style during 14 seasons as an NHL assistant general manager — six with the Ottawa Senators and eight with the Nashville Predators. Shero played college hockey at St. Lawrence University, twice serving as team captain, and was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in 1982. He spent seven years as a player agent before making the move to the front office. The native of St. Paul, Minn., is actively involved with USA Hockey and is a member of the USA Hockey National Team Advisory Group. Ray and his wife, Karen, and their two sons reside in Upper St. Clair.

JASON
BOTTERILL ASSISTANT GENERAL MANAGER
Jason Botterill is in his third full season as assistant general manager after being promoted to his current position in May, 2009, by GM Ray Shero. As assistant GM, Botterill works closely with Shero on all hockey-related matters, including scouting, player development and contract negotiations. He also manages hockey operations and acts as GM for the club’s top minor-league affiliate, Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton of the American Hockey League. Prior to his promotion, Botterill, 35, worked two seasons as director of hockey administration with the Penguins; his responsibilities included salary cap management, professional and amateur scouting and overseeing prospect development. Botterill’s avant-garde approach and understanding of the salary cap has been a major asset for the Penguins. Before joining the Pittsburgh organization, he worked with NHL Central Registry and also scouted for the Dallas Stars. Botterill was a first-round draft pick (20th overall) by Dallas in 1994 and played 88 NHL games over six seasons with Dallas, Atlanta, Calgary and Buffalo. He also played 393 career games in the AHL and IHL, recording 127 goals and 257 points. A native of Edmonton who grew up in Winnipeg, Botterill played four seasons at the University of Michigan and helped lead the Wolverines to the NCAA title in 1996. He also played for Team Canada at the World Junior Championships in 1994, 1995 and 1996 and won gold medals in all three tournaments. Following his playing career, he returned to the University of Michigan to earn his MBA. He resides in Pittsburgh with his wife, Andrea.

DAN
BYLSMA HEAD COACH
Dan Bylsma has already become one of the most successful coaches in Penguins’ history, leading the team to a Stanley Cup title and winning the Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s “Most Outstanding Coach” in just two-plus years behind the bench. With Pittsburgh, Bylsma has recorded back-to-back 100-point seasons, has the best regular-season winning percentage (.653) in team history and is the winningest playoff coach in franchise history with 26 playoff victories and five (tied-Scotty Bowman) series victories. All-time under Bylsma, the Penguins boast a 114-56-19 regular season record, making him the third-winningest coach in team history. He is also the fifthfastest head coach in NHL history to hit the 100-win mark (163 games). Bylsma, who signed a three-year contract extension through the 2013-14 season, won the 2011 Jack Adams Award after a masterful coaching performance last year, steering the injury-depleted Penguins to a 49-25-8 record for 106 points (the 49 wins and 106 points both rank second in franchise history) and tied Philadelphia in points for the Atlantic Division title. The Penguins were in contention for the conference and division titles heading into the final weekend of the regular season despite the fact that the team suffered 350 man-games lost — including 119 games to the team’s three best players: Sidney Crosby (41 games); Evgeni Malkin (39); and Jordan Staal (39). Bylsma also directed the Penguins to a 12-game winning streak, tying for second-best in franchise history, and a 15-game unbeaten streak. Pittsburgh posted a 24-11-6 road record for 54 points. The team’s 54 road points are a new franchise record, while its 24 road wins tie for the team record (1992-93). In 2009-10 Bylsma completed his first full NHL season behind the bench for Pittsburgh, leading the club to a 47-28-7 record for 101 points and finishing only two points behind New Jersey for the Atlantic Division title. Under Bylsma’s leadership the Penguins set many milestones during the season, including tying a team record with seven straight road victories, becoming the second-fastest team in franchise history to 40
28
wins (66 games) and totaling the fourth-most wins (tied) in a season (47). Bylsma began the 2008-09 season with the first head coaching assignment of his career — with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League. He ended it by hoisting the Stanley Cup. In between, Bylsma authored one of the most spectacular coaching stories in the history of professional hockey. The Grand Haven, Mich. native was promoted to Pittsburgh on Feb. 15, 2009, and took over a club that was 10th overall in the Eastern Conference standings and facing questions as to whether a playoff berth was even a practical option. But he accepted the challenge with his trademark optimism, passion and raw determination. Unleashing a swift, skilled team that was built to go on the attack, imploring his players to “play on their toes, not on their heels,” Bylsma led the Penguins to an 18-3-4 record in 25 games, rising from 10th place to fourth in the conference and garnering not only a playoff spot, but home-ice advantage in the first round. In the playoffs, Bylsma’s team showed a steely resolve, clinching all four series on the road and twice rallying from 2-0 series deficits (against Washington in the second round and Detroit in the Stanley Cup Final). The Penguins beat the defending champion Red Wings four times in the last five games to claim the Cup, including a nerve-racking Game Seven at Detroit’s Joe Louis Arena and became the first team in professional sports since 1979 to win Game Seven of a championship round on the road. In the process Bylsma became the 14th rookie head coach, and just the fourth in the past 50 years, to capture the Stanley Cup. Of those 14, only Montreal’s Al MacNeil (1970-71) took over mid-season. Bylsma played nine NHL seasons as a right winger with Los Angeles and Anaheim from 1995-2004. He played 429 NHL regular season games, recording 19 goals and 62 points, and also played in the 2003 Stanley Cup Final with Anaheim. He began his coaching career as an assistant with the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks of the AHL in 2004-05 and made his NHL coaching debut as an assistant with the New York Islanders in 2005-06. Bylsma was an assistant coach at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton for two seasons from 2006-08 and was named head coach at the start of the 2008-09 season. He went 35-16-1-2 in 54 games with WB/S before being promoted to Pittsburgh. He played four seasons of college hockey at Bowling Green. Dan and his wife, Mary Beth, have one son, Bryan, and reside in the North Hills.

TONY
GRANATO ASSISTANT COACH
Tony Granato is in his third season on the Penguins’ coaching staff. Granato, among his many responsibilities, works with the Penguins’ forwards and penalty killing units. He oversaw the NHL’s No. 1-ranked penalty killing group with an 86.1-percent success rate in 2010-11. Prior to joining the Penguins, Granato spent six seasons behind the bench for the Colorado Avalanche and served two stints as Avalanche head coach from 2002-04 and 2008-09. Granato compiled a 104-78-17-16 record and led Colorado to a Northwest Division title in 2003. Granato, 46, joined the Avalanche organization in June, 2002, as an assistant coach. He was elevated to head coach on Dec. 18, 2002 and led the club to a 32-11-4-4 mark en route to its ninth consecutive division title. The following season Granato steered the Avalanche to a 40-22-13-7 finish and an appearance in the Western Conference semifinals. The Downers Grove, Illinois native served as an assistant coach for the Avalanche from 2005-08. Granato was promoted to his second tenure as the club’s head coach in 2008-09 and oversaw the development of a young Colorado team. Granato played 13 seasons in the NHL with the NY Rangers (1988-90), Los Angeles (1990-96) and San Jose (1996-2001). In 1997, he played in the NHL All-Star Game and was the recipient of the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy for overcoming a near career-ending brain injury. In 773 career games, the feisty forward posted 248 goals, 492 points and 1,425 penalty minutes. He tallied 16 goals, 43 points and 141 penalty minutes in 79 career postseason games and helped lead Los Angeles to a Stanley Cup Final berth in 1993. Granato played four years at the University of Wisconsin and was inducted into the Badgers’ Hall of Fame in 2000. Granato also played for the U.S. National team in 1987-88 and represented his country in the 1988 Olympic Games in Calgary. Tony and his wife, Linda, are the parents of four children and reside in the South Hills.

TODD
REIRDEN ASSISTANT COACH
Todd Reirden is in his second season as an assistant coach with the Penguins, joining Pittsburgh’s coaching staff on July 31, 2010 after coaching with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins the previous two seasons. Reirden, an NHL blueliner for parts of five seasons, works closely with the team’s defensemen. Under his guidance the Penguins defense ranked sixth (tied) in the NHL in 2010-11 in goals-against average (2.39) and surrendered only 196 goals (a 39-goal improvement from 2009-10). Reirden, 39, completed his first full season as WB/S head coach in 2009-10, leading a young and inexperienced team to an impressive 41-34-2-3 record, finishing third in the East Division, and earning a berth in the Calder Cup playoffs. Reirden joined the Penguins organization August 18, 2008 as an assistant coach in WB/S. A few months later he was promoted to interim head coach following Dan Bylsma’s promotion to Pittsburgh in February 2009. Reirden guided WB/S to a 14-9-3 mark in the final 26 games, and advanced to the second round of the AHL playoffs. Reirden then joined Pittsburgh’s extended playoff coaching staff and helped the team win the Stanley Cup championship in 2009. Prior to joining the Penguins organization, Reirden spent one season as an assistant coach with the Bowling Green Falcons (CCHA) — his alma mater. He was a teammate of Bylsma’s during the 1990-91 and 1991-92 seasons at Bowling Green. Selected by New Jersey in the 12th round (242nd overall) of the 1990 NHL Draft, Reirden played professionally for 13 seasons, retiring after the 2006-07 campaign with Graz EC of the Austrian Hockey League. He appeared in 183 NHL games with Edmonton, St. Louis, Atlanta and Phoenix, recording 46 points (11G-35A) and 181 penalty minutes. Todd and his wife, Shelby, have one son.

And lawyers in our Hong Kong, Beijing, and Shanghai offices treat the Penguins as a curiosity. The firm makes no apologies for its loyalty to Pittsburgh, the city we’ve called home for the past 134 years.Copyright 2011.

MIKE LANGE PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK PLAY-BY-PLAY ANNOUNCER
One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange is calling games in his 36th season with the Penguins, handling radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM “The X”. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.
PHIL BOURQUE PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK COLOR ANALYST
Two-time Stanley Cup Champion Phil Bourque is in his eighth season on the Penguins broadcast team, serving as color commentator alongside Mike Lange. A gritty winger/defenseman, Bourque was signed by Pittsburgh as a free agent in 1982, and went on to record 164 points (75G-89A) in 344 regular-season games with the Penguins between 1983 and 1992. For his career he totaled 199 points (88G-111A) in 477 games with the Penguins, New York Rangers and Ottawa. Since retiring from professional hockey in 2000, Bourque has co-hosted Penguins pre- and post-game shows on the Penguins Radio Network and worked as a contributor for ROOT Sports’ coverage of Penguins hockey.
43
BOB GROVE STUDIO HOST — PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK
After a 17-year career as the Penguins beat writer for the Washington Observer-Reporter, Bob Grove joined the team’s radio broadcasts in 1998 as a frequent studio host/co-host and is now in his seventh season as full-time host of the pre- and post-game broadcasts and intermissions on the Penguins Hockey Network. Grove wrote Pittsburgh Penguins: The Official History of the First 30 Years in 1997 and has contributed game notes to GOAL Magazine inserts or Icetime programs for every Pittsburgh home game since 1986. He was also a contributor to the second edition of Total Hockey and to The Game I’ll Never Forget. He is a senior writer covering hockey for the Pittsburgh Sports Report and also hosts “Bob Grove’s Hot Stove” on Penguins Radio 24/7.
STEVE MEARS PENGUINS RADIO 24/7 HOST/PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK
Steve Mears is in his third season as a member of the Penguins Radio Network team. In addition to his work on the Penguins’ radio and TV game broadcasts, he serves as the lead host of “Penguins Live” on Penguins Radio 24/7 and is also a contributor to PensTV at pittsburghpenguins.com. Mears came to the Penguins in September of 2009 after spending three seasons as the radio play-by-play voice of the New York Islanders. Prior to his time in New York, he spent four seasons as the director of media relations and broadcasting for the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs of the Central Hockey League. In 2005, he was named “CHL Broadcaster of the Year.” In addition to his radio work, he has also done various game broadcasts for Leafs TV and MSG television networks. A graduate of Franklin Regional High School, Mears grew up in Murrysville, PA and earned a degree in broadcasting from Bowling Green State University in 2002 while serving as the play-by-play voice of the BGSU Falcons. RULES OF THE GAME PRESENTED BY
BOARDING NEW NHL RULE CHANGE FOR 2011.12 BOARDING
To check or push a defenseless opponent in such a manner that causes the opponent to hit or impact into the boards dangerously or violently.
-
The player applying the check needs to ensure his opponent is not in a defenseless position and if so, must avoid contact.
-
The player with the puck needs to avoid placing himself in a dangerous and defenseless position.
-
Any unnecessary contact with a player playing the puck on an obvious “icing” or “off-sides” play that does not impact boards should be treated as “charging.”
DELAY OF GAME A player may be penalized when, in the opinion of the Referee, is delaying the game in any matter. (Normally six conditions) 1.) Player or goaltender intentionally shoots or throws the puck out
of the playing area. 2.) A defensive player or goaltender in the defensive zone shoots
the puck directly (without being deflected) over the glass. 3.) A player or goaltender intentionally knocks the net’s goalpost off
its moorings, which stops the play. 4.) The goaltender plays the puck out of the trapezoid behind the net. 5.) The goaltender freezes the puck rather than passing it to a
teammate when no player on the opposing team is within sufficient distance to apply offensive pressure. 6.) Any skater other than the goaltender who uses their hands to
make the puck unplayable.

INTERFERENCE INTERFERENCE
BODY POSITION: Body position will be determined as the player skating in front of or beside his opponent, traveling in the same direction. - A player who is behind an opponent, who does not have the puck, may not use his stick, body or free hand in order to restrain his opponent. POSSESSION OF THE PUCK: The last player to touch the puck, other than the goaltenders, will be considered the player in possession. RESTRAIN: The actions of a player or goaltender who does not have body position, but instead uses illegal means to impede an opponent who is not in possession of the puck. PICK: The action of a player or goaltender who checks an opponent who is not in possession of the puck and is unaware of the impending check/hit. FREE HAND: When a free hand is used to hold, pull, tug, grab or physically restrain an opponent from moving freely, this must be penalized as holding. STICK: A player who does not have body position on his opponent, who used his stick to impede or prevent his opponent from moving freely on the ice shall be assessed a hooking penalty.
OFF-SIDES Players of the attacking team must not precede the puck into the attacking zone. (Two determining factors) 1.) One of a player’s skates is not in contact with or behind the blue
line of the attacking zone before the puck enters that zone. 2.) The puck must completely cross the edge of the blue line nearest
the attacking zone to be considered inside the attacking zone.
The act of using the stick in a manner that enables a player to restrain an opponent.
-
When a player is checking another in such a way that there is only stick-to-stick contact, such action is not to be penalized as hooking.

-
An official may remove a player taking the faceoff if that player or any teammate tries to gain an unfair advantage. • Moving the stick before the puck is dropped. • Not placing the stick down on the ice properly when asked. • Not placing the body square to the faceoff spot. • Another teammate comes into the faceoff circle.
-

JOIN THE RUSH!
TM
Introduced in the mid 1990’s, the American Eagle Student Rush Program is one of the most popular and well known marketing initiatives of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Designed to sell remaining game-day inventory, the American Eagle Student Rush program provides the Pittsburgh Penguins an opportunity to introduce new fans to the game of hockey at a discounted rate. Based upon the positive feedback the organization has received from current season ticket holders who were one-time Student Rush participants, the program has been successful in developing a long-term relationship with young, active Pittsburghers. During the 2011-12 season, at least 200 American Eagle Student Rush tickets will be made available for each regular season home game at CONSOL Energy Center. To avoid long waits outside during the winter months, the organization will host online pre-sales for most games. To receive pre-sale information, students can text “RUSH” to 32623 to register for the American Eagle Student Rush Mobile Club. Each pre-game text includes the opportunity to win two free tickets to the next home game! In addition to the 200 tickets offered each game, five special Student Rush nights will be held. At least 500 student rush tickets will be available for these select games at the American Eagle Gate. Music, prizes and giveaways will also be provided courtesy of American Eagle Outfitters. The special nights include:
• Thursday, October 20 vs. Montreal Canadiens – 7:00 pm • Tuesday, November 15 vs. Colorado Avalanche – 7:30 pm • Wednesday, February 15 vs. Anaheim Ducks – 7:00 pm • Friday, March 9 vs. Florida Panthers – 7:00 pm • Tuesday, March 27 vs. New York Islanders – 7:00 pm For more on the American Eagle Student Rush program, please visit www.pittsburghpenguins.com/studentrush

GAME NOTES By: Bob Grove
THE SERIES The Penguins and New Jersey Devils meet tonight for the first time this season, and the first time since the Devils hired Peter DeBoer as coach. After being swept by the Devils during the 2009-10 season, the Penguins earned points in five of their six games against New Jersey last season (4-1-1) and won each of the last two games. Pittsburgh allowed the Devils only eight goals last season while scoring just 11 themselves, so each game in the six-game series produced an average of just 3.16 goals. . . The Penguins have converted only two of their last 43 power-play chances against the Devils. . . In their last 12 games against New Jersey, the Penguins have scored a total of 16 goals, or 1.33 goals per game. . . Pittsburgh has won three straight home games against New Jersey, their longest home winning streak against the Devils since winning five straight games Feb. 28, 1990 through Jan. 22, 1991. . . Chris Kunitz led all Pittsburgh scorers last season against New Jersey with four points (2+2), while Brian Rolston (3+1) and Patrik Elias (1+3) each had four points for the Devils. Rolston now plays for the NY Islanders. . . Last season against the Penguins, Ilya Kovalchuk had one point in six games and was minus-7 . . . Martin Brodeur has nine career shutouts against Pittsburgh, one shy of the record 10 shutouts Bernie Parent had against Chris Kunitz led all Pittsburgh scorers against the Penguins New Jersey last season with four points (2+2). continued on page 85

The next game between the teams is Dec. 31 at 3 p.m. in New Jersey, and their next game here is Jan. 7.
THE PENGUINS Tonight’s game is the fourth in six days for the Penguins, who hosted Montreal on Thursday after beginning the week with games in Winnipeg on Monday and Minnesota on Tuesday. . . Pittsburgh fell in Winnipeg, 2-1, to give the Jets their first win back in the NHL since being transferred from Atlanta. Kyle Wellwood scored eight seconds into the game — the fastest goal ever scored by a Penguins’ opponent at the start of the game. Ross Lonsberry of Philadelphia had set the previous record of nine seconds on Oct. 20, 1977 in the Flyers’ 11-0 win over Pittsburgh. . . Zbynek Michalek scored his first goal of the season against the Jets. . . The Penguins begin a homeand-home series with the NY Islanders on Long Island on Tuesday and then host the Islanders on Thursday. . . LETANG BUILDS OFF LAST SEASON Kris Letang is in his fifth season with the Pittsburgh Penguins and has emerged as one of the NHL’s top defensemen. At the end of the 2010-11 season, Letang ranked in the top 10 in points (50, rank 7th) and assists (42, rank 6th) among the league’s defensemen. Both totals were new Kris Letang was named to the 2011 NHL All-Star team. career highs for the 24-year-old. His level of play earned him a spot in the All-Star game and his name was being linked as a Norris Trophy candidate. “To be named an All-Star and have my name tossed around for the Norris is something that I really appreciate,” Letang said. “This year I’ll try to do the same thing.” Letang’s main focus is being a strong part of the team’s blue line. He’s off to a great start this season, and as of Oct. 14, Letang was second in points in the league with six (1G-5A) in five games played. “I want to be a good player for my team and play really good defensively,” Letang said. “The production will come by itself. I proved it last year.” “He gets better every day,” said Deryk Engellend, who has paired with Letang at the start of the season. “His skating abilities and shot and offensive instincts are awesome. “At his own end he makes simple plays, the right plays at the right time and has been solid down there for us.”

Deryk Engelland says the way Letang plays on the ice, comes to the rink every day and plays hard, shows his leadership skills.
While Letang isn’t the most vocal in the locker room, his role as a leader is obvious on the ice. “You watch him play and that says enough for his leadership,” Engellend said. “The way he plays, he comes to the rink every day and plays hard that’s a lot of leadership right there.” “I’ve never been a guy that really talks in the locker room,” Letang said. “I’m more of a guy who shows example on the ice and through the way I play. That’s how I’m going to be.” During the preseason, Letang showed his ability to step up as a leader and mentor especially when playing with 18-year-old Joe Morrow. “He’s a young guy, but he’s also played a lot in the league,” head coach Dan Bylsma said. “He’s played a lot for our team and he’s at that point where he’s that type of player for our younger players.” Letang trained hard this summer to improve himself on the ice. With the help of Jonathan Chaimberg, a 32-year-old former wrestler who’s now a strength coach in Quebec, Letang trained six days a week continued on page 98

at Adrenaline Performance Center, Chaimberg’s facility in Montreal. Always looking to improve, Letang frequently watches footage of himself and works closely with assistant coach Todd Reirden. “Kris continues to be a work in progress and he’s off to a great start this year,” said Reirden. “To his credit, a lot of that goes back to his summer conditioning and preparing to build off of some of things he was able to accomplish last year.” Reirden believes Letang is pushing himself to have a better, more consistent season than last, but he isn’t worrying about numbers as much as playing the right way defensively. “He believes now that if he plays the right way, then the offense and the statistics will take care of themselves,” Reirden said. “I think that the numbers that he gets will be a process of playing the right way.” Letang is already off to a strong season, and his goals for this season are higher than ever. “I push myself to be a better player every year,” Letang said. “My expectations are higher than last year in all situations.”
During the preseason, Letang showed his ability to step up as a leader and mentor especially when playing with 18-year-old Joe Morrow.

I feel
.
Ask a grieving child how they’re feeling and you may get a lot of answers. Or none at all. For many, finding the words to express their feelings can be difficult. But while finding the right words may not be easy, finding the right place to turn to for help can be. At the Caring Place, we’re here when grieving children need someone to listen, to talk, or to just sit and be. For more information about one of our peer support groups or to volunteer, call us today.

LITTLE PENGUINS LEARN TO PLAY HOCKEY Sidney Crosby and his family wanted to help parents introduce their kids to the game of hockey — and to do it without having to incur a prohibitive up-front cost. The result is the Little Penguins Learn to Play Hockey program — a tremendous, one-of-a-kind opportunity for kids aged 4-7 to receive free head-to-toe hockey equipment and 10 sessions of on-ice instruction. The 2011-12 season will be the fourth consecutive year for the Little Penguins program, which continues to grow. Last season twenty-one rinks hosted the program and four girls-only locations were added. This season, even more rinks will serve as Little Penguins partners! Since the program began, over 2,000 youngsters have received equipment and learned to play hockey. This season another 1,000 kids will have the opportunity to receive free gear and learn the game. Thanks to the combined efforts of Crosby, the Penguins, Reebok and Dick’s Sporting Goods, all participants receive full sets of Reebok SC87 Crosby-endorsed equipment, including skates, stick, helmet, gloves, pants, shoulder pads, shin pads, elbow pads and an equipment bag, as well as an official Little Penguins jersey and Little Penguins helmet stickers. After a high profile promotional period early in the season, the program sells out quickly when registration takes place online. During this promotion, parents may view information regarding participating rinks, starting dates, and times of instructional sessions, which are listed on the Penguins’ website prior to the registration date. “We were both excited and amazed by the reaction to the Little Penguins program in previous seasons, and we’re happy to be able
128
to offer the program again for another year,” Crosby said. “The goal is to continue to create opportunities for more kids in the Pittsburgh area to take up hockey. With the Little Penguins program, they can receive head-to-toe hockey equipment and learn the game in a fun and organized way.” “It’s a tribute to Sid and his family that they want to reach out and create this incredible opportunity for children in the Pittsburgh area,” said Penguins CEO and president David Morehouse. “One of their goals was to help parents by providing free head-to-toe hockey equipment to properly equip their children. The Penguins are honored to join Reebok and Dick’s Sporting Goods in supporting Sid and this great program.” Local rinks participating in the program this year include the Airport Ice Arena in Moon Township, the Belmont Ice Complex in Kittanning, the Bladerunners Ice Arenas in Bethel Park, Harmarville and Warrendale, Center Ice Arena in Delmont, Galactic Ice in Altoona, the Hess Ice Arena in New Castle, the Ice Castle in Castle Shannon, Iceoplex at Southpointe, the Ice Connection in Valencia, the Ice Garden-Rostraver in Belle Vernon, the Ice Mine in Connellsville, the Ice Zone in Youngstown, Kirk-Nevin Ice Arena in Greensburg, the Mt. Lebanon Recreation Center, the Morgantown Municipal Ice Arena, the North Central Recreation Center in Ebensburg, the RMU Island Sports Center on Neville Island, the S&T Bank Arena in Indiana, the Valley Sports arena in New Kensington and Wheeling Park. ICEBURGH A delight for children of all ages, Iceburgh — the official mascot of the Pittsburgh Penguins not only provides fans with exciting game entertainment but this large, energetic bird can also be seen at a multitude of community events and elementary schools throughout the greater Pittsburgh area. Iceburgh arrived on the scene in 1992 and is a staple at all team events. During Penguins’ home games, fans most definitely notice the antics of Iceburgh leading sections of fans in cheers, greeting young children on the concourse or displaying his athleticism on-ice between periods. In 1995, Iceburgh made his Hollywood debut, starring alongside Jean Claude Van Damme in the motion picture “Sudden Death.” He has gained both national and international exposure through film, TV and a variety of personal appearances. Iceburgh wasted no time getting acquainted with his new home at CONSOL Energy Center in September of 2010. You can find Iceburgh sliding down stair banisters, dancing in the stands and tossing t-shirts to fans. Iceburgh has performed in Russia and Japan, was featured in the opening of ESPN’s SportsCenter and recently performed in front of a record crowd of over 68,000 at Heinz Field for the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic. He is also regularly featured on in-game videos and has appeared in advertisements and television promos on ROOT Sports. In addition to his annual trek to the NHL All-Star Game, Iceburgh makes annual appearances at the Mascot Olympics held in Orlando, FL. If you would like to request an Iceburgh appearance at your next event, please complete the online form by visiting the community section of pittsburghpenguins.com.

COMMUNITY UPDATE PLAYERS AND WIVES SHOW LOVE FOR LOKOMOTIV By: Michelle Crechiolo
Evgeni Malkin certainly had a lot to play for on October 13, as the Penguins’ tilt with the Capitals at CONSOL Energy Center served as a way to raise money for the families of Evgeni Malkin and fellow Russian Alex Ovechkin joined Lokomotiv Yaroslavl, forces to headline the effort Love for Lokomotiv. the KHL team that perished in a plane crash September 7 in Russia. Malkin and fellow Russian superstar Alex Ovechkin joined forces to headline the effort, where players from both clubs wore jerseys with commemorative Lokomotiv patches that will be autographed and auctioned off at nhl.com through November 1. All proceeds from the game-issued and game-worn sweaters will benefit the Lokomotiv players’ children and families. “We need to help because it’s very important for me, for all of us,” Malkin said. “We’re one big hockey team and family. We need to help because it’s a big tragedy in Russia.” Malkin grew up playing hockey in Russia before coming to Pittsburgh and knows many of the families directly affected. Head coach Dan Bylsma reiterated before the game just how much this fundraiser meant to Malkin, who approached him and general manager Ray Shero weeks ago about ways they could help. “Geno immediately, has deeply been touched by it, and immediately wanted to partake in this game,” Bylsma said. “Geno hasn’t asked for a lot of meetings with Ray Shero and myself in my time here, but right away he was like, we’ve got to do something. Not just for this game but for the families and for the team, for his loss, for the country’s loss, for hockey’s loss.” continued on page 150

The Penguins players’ wives and girlfriends also wanted to help in any way they could for something that hit so close to home. So they sold remembrance bracelets before and during the Washingtion game on October 13 as part of the “Love for Lokomotiv” project — a grassroots initiative spearheaded by Brijet Whitney, wife of Phoenix Coyotes forward Ray Whitney. Upon hearing the horrible news, Brijet reached out to her network of contacts compiled through her husband’s years in the league. They came up with the idea of selling bracelets and quickly arranged for all 30 NHL teams to have a representative. “When this happened, you realize how small the hockey world is,” said Anne Adams, wife of Penguins forward Craig Adams, who served as Pittsburgh’s representative. “It just sort of makes you pause and think about what matters. Everyone just felt terrible and just wanted to do something.” For those who didn’t attend the game, bracelets can be purchased and/or donations can be made at the project’s website, www.LoveForLokomotiv.com. The Penguins players’ wives and girlfriends sold remembrance bracelets as part of the “We are family regardless “Love for Lokomotiv” project. of what team we are on,” said Mary Beth Bylsma, wife of coach Dan. “So when a tragedy like this hits, we feel as though it’s part of our own family that’s been also affected. Our own families are on those planes every single day, and so it didn’t matter that it was in Russia, it could have been in our own backyard. So we are happy that we could be part of something to help.”

A LOCKER ROOM FILLED WITH INTANGIBLES AND TALENT By: Mike Prisuta
When forwards Max Talbot and Mike Rupp departed via free agency, they took with them not just grit and physicality but also personality and a locker room presence, part of what made the Penguins the Penguins. But that said, these Penguins are still passing chemistry. “We have a close group,” forward Craig Adams assessed. “Everybody really gets along really well. It’s a lot of fun to be around the guys. Guys work very hard but at the same time aren’t too serious. “It’s definitely one of the looser locker rooms I’ve been in.” Even without Talbot and Rupp. Or, perhaps, especially without Talbot and Rupp. “I never thought much of either of those guys,” Adams cracked. “I don’t think it’s a big loss.” He was kidding, of course. Talbot and Rupp were as popular as they were clutch, especially Talbot, who spent his first six NHL seasons with the Penguins and will forever be remembered for his Game Seven heroics against the Red Wings.

But even without those two, the group endures. The Penguins have remained a congregation that oozes intangibles, as well as world class talent. And the fabric of what defines this team as a team, while affected, remains unaltered. “We have mostly the same cast of guys,” Adams said. “A lot of us know each other well in here. We’ve added a few new guys but they’re all good guys and good people. “I don’t think it’ll take them long, hopefully, to feel comfortable.” It didn’t for defenseman Matt Niskanen upon being acquired from Dallas, along with forward James Neal, last February. “I was pleasantly surprised at how close everybody was,” Niskanen said. “It was a very good dressing room to come into last spring when James and I got traded here. Guys get along; they play for each other, play for the right reasons. “There’s no jealousy and you can see that in the way we play on the ice, it’s a factor. That’s carried over into this year and it’s a credit to the leadership, the young leadership in this room. It’s a fun locker room to be in and it’s fun to come to the rink every day.” For many fans, their first exposure to that dynamic came via HBO’s documentary chronicling the Penguins and the Capitals in the weeks leading up to last January’s Winter Classic. Dupuis was clued in upon his arrival in a trade with Atlanta in February of 2008. “It’s been that way since when I walked in this locker room,” Dupuis said. “I’ve said it over and over; it’s a special group of guys. The guys all care for each ~ MATT NISKANEN other. We all want the guy next to you to do really well.

“It’s like … all your bothers … you expect and you hope and you want them to do well.” The players, to a degree, come and go from one season to the next. The “special” stays. “It starts with Sid [Crosby] and Geno [Malkin],” Niskanen said. “They weren’t around much as far as being in the lineup last spring but they were around the dressing room and they were involved. You can tell how much they care. They keep things fun. “The good thing about this group is there’s leadership by committee, too. Good veteran players like Pascal Dupuis and Matt Cooke keep things loose and fun but also very motivated for the task at hand.” The Penguins have a few things going for them that help to maintain such an atmosphere. Their ownership spends money to the limits of the salary cap in pursuit of Stanley Cups. Their loyal and rabid fan base shows up at home and on the road. And their still-new facility is as fan-friendly and familyfriendly as it is state of the art. They also win a lot of hockey games. But it isn’t just the winning that’s made the Penguins what they’ve become. They’ve endured their share of disappointments — last spring’s first-round exit from the postseason after achieving a three-games-to-one lead on Tampa Bay stands as an example — and have still managed to stay together. “We’ve gone through some tough times and that hasn’t left us,” Adams said. “Hopefully, that’s just who we are and we can keep that with us, regardless of the ups and downs.”
“IT’S LIKE. . . ALL YOUR BOTHERS. . . YOU EXPECT AND YOU HOPE AND YOU WANT THEM TO DO WELL.” ~ PASCAL DUPUIS

OFF-ICE WITH MATT COOKE By Justin Criado
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT PITTSBURGH?
I wouldn’t say I have one favorite thing — the fans are great for all of the sports in Pittsburgh and that makes it a really comforting place to play. I like the hometown feel with all of the big city attributes. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PITTSBURGH WORD OR PHRASE?
It’s got to be ‘yinzer.’ WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE PITTSBURGH NONHOCKEY ATHLETE? It’s a close race, but I would
say my first one is [Steelers defensive end] Aaron Smith and my second is [Pirates second baseman] Neil Walker. WHAT’S AN INTERESTING FACT ABOUT YOURSELF THAT PENGUINS FANS MAY NOT KNOW? I collect antiques.
My father-in-law got me into it. I’ve gone to a few auctions. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT A GAME DAY? It’s a toss
up between my meal and my nap. WHY DO YOU WEAR NO. 24?
I wore 12 my whole career. When I went to Vancouver, Stan Smyl had just retired, so it made sense to just double it. WHAT WAS THE FIRST JOB THAT YOU HAD? Babysitter. DID YOU HAVE AN IDOL GROWING UP? My age
bracket kind of links me in with everyone who idolized Wayne Gretzky, but I also watched Wendel Clark play a lot.
160
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE SPORT TO PLAY BESIDES HOCKEY?
Now it’s golf. It was rugby when I was younger. IF YOU COULD HAVE YOUR OWN ENTRANCE SONG COMING OUT OF THE RUNWAY WHAT WOULD IT BE?
‘Best of You’ by the Foo Fighters. IF YOU WEREN’T PLAYING HOCKEY WHAT WOULD YOU BE DOING? I’d probably be teaching. High schoolers give too much
attitude I think [laughs], so I’d probably teach grade school. WHAT’S THE BEST MEAL YOU CAN COOK? I guess it would depend
on who you are asking. Maybe lasagna. COMPLETE THIS SENTENCE: “I WOULD NOT BE HERE TODAY IF IT WEREN’T FOR . . .” My wife and kids. WHAT’S THE BEST ADVICE YOU’VE EVER BEEN GIVEN?
Keep strong and carry on.

PENGUINS PROFILE
JOE VITALE By: Mark Madden
Joe Vitale knows the key to NHL longevity isn’t just making a team. The key is turning in your hotel room key. Live in a hotel, and you’re a Penguin. . . for now. But if you get told to get your own place, you have staying power. “People say, ‘Oh, you made the team?’ But the day they tell you to get a place is a better day than hearing you made the team,” said Vitale. “That’s the day to celebrate.” The dynamic rookie center seemed to be edging ever closer to checking out of his hotel as October reached its midway point. Vitale collected two assists in the Penguins’ home opener, a 4-2 victory over Florida on Oct. 11, and was playing significant minutes on the third and fourth lines. Vitale played nine games with the Penguins last season, dishing one assist. “This feels like a dream,” said the 5-foot-11, 205-pound St. Louis native. “During my short stint last year, I was really nervous. I felt like, at any moment, somebody was going to shake me and I would wake up. “This compares with that. The home opener, with the crowd, just looking around. . . it’s something. It’s crazy.” Vitale took the long road to the NHL. He played four years at Northeastern University, then two seasons at the Penguins’ Wilkes-Barre/Scranton American Hockey League affiliate. He’s 26, but feels younger. “Twenty-six, yeah, that’s kind of old [for a rookie],” Vitale mused. “But I never really felt like I was too old for this. I don’t feel 26. I feel like I turned 21 yesterday. The energy I have, the passion I have for this game. . . it’s so very high. I never really lost hope. “Now that I have the opportunity, I’m trying to make the most of it.” continued on page 164
163
continued from page 163
Coach Dan Bylsma wants the Penguins to head north, to skate and play at a high tempo. That’s OK by Vitale. “I wanted to be fast, to play at a pace a lot of players couldn’t keep up with,” Vitale said of his showing at this year’s training camp. “I think I did an OK job with that in camp and in the pre-season games. “[Bylsma] used me in five of the six pre-season games. I felt a little better each game. I tried to make that speed and pace set me apart.” Vitale feels that the nine NHL games he played last year were invaluable. “That whole experience did me a world of good,” Vitale said. “It made me realize the things I need to work on, and the things I’m good at. “The biggest thing is, it gave me some belief headed into camp this year. I played in the NHL. I survived. I think I can actually play here. Those nine games had ups and downs — but they gave me the belief that I can play here.” Wilkes-Barre/Scranton plays the same system as the Penguins. That familiarity helped Vitale, too. “When I got called up last year, I wasn’t nervous about the system,” Vitale said. “I wasn’t uncertain on how to play, or where I should be. The only nerves I had were [because] I’m playing in the NHL. You come here and play exactly the same way. Nothing changes. You just play with different players. “It’s a good system. We like to go north, up and down the ice as much as possible. Spend as little time as possible in the defensive zone. It suits me well. I like to get a couple of crossovers going, then really stride it out.” Vitale assisted on goals by wingers Pascal Dupuis and Matt Cooke in the home opener. Both veterans have made Vitale’s adjustment less difficult. “Those guys have been very helpful,” said Vitale. “Not just on the ice, but away from the rink as far as making me feel comfortable. They’ve been great as far as me fitting in here. “On the bench, they talk to me about certain plays and different positioning. They’re not just focused on their game, they’re good about helping younger guys make the transition a little bit easier.”

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT
JACK RILEY By: Jason Seidling
As the Pittsburgh Penguins compete in their 44th season in the National Hockey League, one man has been around to witness all the highs, lows, peaks and valleys — the man who pieced together the Penguins’ original roster in 1967-68 — Jack Riley. Now 92, Riley, the team’s first-ever general manager, is still a visible presence at many of the team’s home games at CONSOL Energy Center, and also as an active member of the team’s alumni association. He can often be found on game day sitting next to another former Penguins general manager — Eddie Johnston. Riley, who in 2010 was voted onto the Penguins’ Trib Total Media All-Time Team as an executive, served two stints as Penguins general manager — first from 1967-70, and later from 1972-74. In between, he was the team’s president from 1970-72. Among the highlights of Riley’s career included bringing in Les Binkley to be the top goaltender on Pittsburgh’s inaugural team, acquiring franchise player Jean Pronovost from Boston and drafting the late Michel Briere in the third round of the 1969 NHL Entry Draft. Although Riley served stints as the commissioner of both the Southern Hockey League and the International Hockey League (IHL) after leaving the Penguins, he never left the comforts of the city of Pittsburgh. He is still a proud Pittsburgher today, where he lives in the same house as when he was the team’s GM with his daughter, Barbara, and grandson Patrick — both of whom he says are just as big of hockey fans as he is. Riley sat down with us between periods at a recent game to talk about what he’s been up to when he’s not at the rink, and how much the game has changed since he broke into the league 44 years ago: YOU HAVEN’T WORKED FOR THE PENGUINS FOR SEVERAL DECADES, YET YOU NEVER ACTUALLY LEFT THE CITY. WHY IS THAT? I really like the city. I was sick of moving. I have lived
in a lot of different cities in my life, but I really like Pittsburgh best. continued on page 172

continued from page 169
BESIDES COME TO THE RINK, WHAT DO YOU DO THESE DAYS TO HELP KEEP YOU IN SUCH GREAT SHAPE? Well, I love to play a lot
of golf, although I didn’t get in as much this year as I wanted to. I got in nine holes about five or six times. I used to be able to shoot in the 80s, but now I can’t break 100. There are always guys your age that you can play with. I walk for exercise too. I jogged up until I was 70 years old. I think 6,000 miles is what I’ve walked the past 15-20 years — that averages out to about eight per week. YOU’VE SEEN A LOT OF GREAT PLAYERS AND UNBELIEVABLE GAMES THROUGHOUT THE YEARS. WHO ARE SOME OF THE BEST PLAYERS YOU’VE EVER WATCHED? Mario [Lemieux] was one
of the best. The best player I ever saw was Bobby Orr. Sidney [Crosby] reminds me so much of him in so many ways. I guess it is the intensity — they will just never give up. Orr played defense — he would block a shot and then he would be leading the rush the other way up the ice. There have been so many good players to come through here — [Paul] Coffey, [Jaromir] Jagr, Mario, the list just goes on and on. UNTIL YOU GAVE HIM A CHANCE DURING THAT FIRST SEASON, LES BINKLEY HAD NEVER BEEN AN NHL GOALTENDER. WHAT WAS IT ABOUT HIM THAT STUCK OUT TO YOU? We were fortunate
the first year to buy Binkley from Cleveland. He ended up being one of the best goaltenders that year. I had seen him play because I was the general manager in Rochester [American Hockey League] for many years. He had a great sense of humor. While most goalkeepers are always so serious, the minute that game was over, Bink was a comedian win, lose or draw. One time when he was playing for Cleveland against Rochester, he got knocked out. I used to go down even if it was the visiting team to see how the guy was doing. The doctor was asking him “how many fingers do I have up?” Bink would say “two.” Then he said “how many do I have up now?” Finally the doctor said “who is President of the United States?” Bink responded “I don’t know — I’m Canadian.” WHAT IS THE BIGGEST CHANGE YOU’VE SEEN IN THE GAME?
The thing that has changed the most is salaries. That first year we signed the whole team for $325,000. Right now, one guy would be the low-man on the totem pole at that salary. In fact, we got Andy Bathgate, who was a former Hart Trophy winner in the league, and even though he was at the end of the trail, he was the highest paid guy at about $25,000.
