BY THE NUMBERS: Some big names were stalking some big career numbers at the outset of the 2011-12 season. Among them: Calgary’s Jarome Iginla, who opened 16 goals shy of 500.
Jaromir Jagr
Ray Whitney of Phoenix, who started 74 points short of 1,000. Philadelphia’s Jaromir Jagr, who began 47 assists away from 1,000 and 42 points short of Joe Sakic’s 1,641, the eighth-best figure in NHL history. LOOKING AHEAD: Some important dates to keep in mind as the new season progresses:
NOV. 14 Hockey Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, Toronto (Ed Belfour, Doug Gilmour, Mark Howe, Joe Nieuwendyk).
DEC. 12 U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame Induction ceremony, Chicago (Chris Chelios, Mike Emrick, Ed Snider, Gary Suter, Keith Tkachuk).
DEC. 26-JAN. 5 IIHF World U20 Championship (Edmonton & Calgary). JAN. 2 Winter Classic (Rangers at Flyers, Citizens Bank Park). JAN. 26-30 NHL All-Star Break. FEB. 17-19 Hockey Weekend Across America. FEB. 27 Trade deadline (3 p.m. ET). APRIL 11 Stanley Cup playoffs begin. TOUGH ACT TO FOLLOW: HBO has announced it will once again chronicle the days and weeks leading up to Jan. 2 in “24/7 Flyers-Rangers Road to the Winter Classic.” Last year’s edition, featuring the Penguins and Capitals, was described by the New York Times as a “superb, engrossing documentary.” IT’S BEEN A WHILE: The Bruins are out to become the NHL’s first back-to-back champion since the Red Wings in 1997-98. A total of 10 teams have captured Cups since then, with Detroit (2002, 2008) and New Jersey (2000, 2003) winning twice but not in consecutive seasons. MEET THE NEW BOSS: Former Penguins assistant Mike Yeo (Minnesota) is one of six new head coaches this season. The others are Glen Gulutzan (Dallas), Kevin Dineen (Florida), Peter DeBoer (New Jersey), Paul MacLean (Ottawa) and Claude Noel (Winnipeg).

There’s a fundamental difference between Lexus and every other luxury brand, and it comes down to this—confidence. Confidence in some of the finest automobiles ever built. And confidence in great value. Perhaps that explains why more people have chosen Lexus over any other luxury brand 11 years in a row.4 This is the luxury of confidence. This is the pursuit of perfection.

MARIO
LEMIEUX CO-OWNER/CHAIRMAN
Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in National Hockey League history, is in his 13th season as co-owner and chairman of the board of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice — including a Stanley Cup championship in 2009. The Penguins entered the 2011-12 season having sold out 210 straight games (and counting) while setting new standards for local television ratings, merchandise sales, website traffic and social media. The ownership group also was proud to open the sparkling new CONSOL Energy Center last season — a state-of-the-art venue that was named Best NHL Arena in a survey of Sports Business Journal readers and was a finalist for Facility of the Year at the 2011 Sports Business Awards. Opening the doors of the arena in August, 2010, was the culmination of a 10-year quest by Lemieux and Burkle to ensure the long-term future of the Penguins in Pittsburgh. “Le Magnifique” was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. An immaculately gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033).

MARIOLEMIEUX
After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — thereby becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $8 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org. Mario and his wife, Nathalie, and their four children live in Sewickley.

RON
BURKLE CO-OWNER
Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 13th season as co-owner of the Penguins. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they have developed one of the most outstanding ownership groups in all of professional sports. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his essential role in negotiations for a new arena. Burkle was proud to be on hand when the Penguins opened CONSOL Energy Center with their first regular season game against the Philadelphia Flyers on Oct. 7, 2010. Under the leadership of Lemieux and Burkle, the Penguins have sold out every game for four-plus seasons and finished in the top 10 (out of 122 pro teams) in ESPN the Magazine’s “Ultimate Standings” in each of the past three years. The Penguins reached the Stanley Cup Final back-to-back in 2008 and 2009 winning the Cup in 2009. The team’s financial strength has enabled hockey management to spend to the salary cap, sign the team’s young core players to long-term contracts and put a competitive team on the ice year after year. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is co-chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League and the Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy. He has received numerous awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year and the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year award.

DAVID
MOREHOUSE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER & PRESIDENT
David Morehouse has quickly established himself as one of the most dynamic senior executives in the National Hockey League. Since being named President of the Penguins in April, 2007, Morehouse has reshaped the team’s image and strategic vision with an emphasis on branding, fan relations, youth marketing, community interaction, corporate outreach and innovative technology. He was given the additional responsibilities of Chief Executive Officer in September, 2010, and now oversees every aspect of the Penguins’ operations, reporting directly to co-owners Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle. Under Morehouse’s leadership, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in all of professional sports — ranked in the top 10 out of 122 pro teams in each of the past three years in ESPN The Magazine’s “Ultimate Standings.” The Penguins were named No. 3 overall out of 122 teams in Fan Relations in 2011. The team also was a finalist for Professional Sports Team of the Year at the 2011 Sports Business Awards, and the new CONSOL Energy Center was a finalist for Facility of the Year. The Penguins have sold out every game for four-plus seasons — a streak that had reached 210 games before the start of the 2011-12 season. They also have sold out all suites for three-plus seasons and set new standards for local TV ratings, website traffic, merchandise sales and social media. Morehouse himself was named 2011 CEO Communicator of the Year by the Pittsburgh Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America. The Pittsburgh native joined the Penguins in 2004 as Senior Consultant on the new arena project following a career in national politics that included stints at the White House, Pentagon and on Capitol Hill as well as key roles in two Presidential campaigns. Morehouse attended the Community College of Allegheny County and Duquesne University and received a master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. He and his wife, Vanessa, have three children and live in Sewickley Heights.

RAY
SHERO EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT & GENERAL MANAGER
Ray Shero, 49, is at the vanguard of the NHL’s new breed of general managers — steeped in family hockey tradition but on the cutting-edge of new technology and modernization in hockey operations, player relations and team management. Shero was named GM of the Penguins in May, 2006, and his fresh ideas, family-friendly environment and calm but firm management style helped transform a franchise that did not qualify for the playoffs from 2002-06 into one that regularly challenges for the Stanley Cup — reaching the Final in 2008 and winning the Cup in 2009. He’s been especially proactive in keeping the core of the team together, signing Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Marc-Andre Fleury, Jordan Staal, Brooks Orpik and Kris Letang, among others, to longterm contracts. One of his most successful moves came behind the bench during the 2008-09 season, when he promoted Dan Bylsma to head coach on Feb. 15, 2009. Bylsma went on to lead the Penguins to the Stanley Cup in 2009 and then won the Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s “Most Outstanding Coach” in 2011. Ray’s father, Fred, won two Stanley Cups as head coach of the Philadelphia Flyers in 1974-75, and the Sheros are one of the few father-son tandems to have their names on the Stanley Cup. Ray built his managerial style during 14 seasons as an NHL assistant general manager — six with the Ottawa Senators and eight with the Nashville Predators. Shero played college hockey at St. Lawrence University, twice serving as team captain, and was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in 1982. He spent seven years as a player agent before making the move to the front office. The native of St. Paul, Minn., is actively involved with USA Hockey and is a member of the USA Hockey National Team Advisory Group. Ray and his wife, Karen, and their two sons reside in Upper St. Clair.

JASON
BOTTERILL ASSISTANT GENERAL MANAGER
Jason Botterill is in his third full season as assistant general manager after being promoted to his current position in May, 2009, by GM Ray Shero. As assistant GM, Botterill works closely with Shero on all hockey-related matters, including scouting, player development and contract negotiations. He also manages hockey operations and acts as GM for the club’s top minor-league affiliate, Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton of the American Hockey League. Prior to his promotion, Botterill, 35, worked two seasons as director of hockey administration with the Penguins; his responsibilities included salary cap management, professional and amateur scouting and overseeing prospect development. Botterill’s avant-garde approach and understanding of the salary cap has been a major asset for the Penguins. Before joining the Pittsburgh organization, he worked with NHL Central Registry and also scouted for the Dallas Stars. Botterill was a first-round draft pick (20th overall) by Dallas in 1994 and played 88 NHL games over six seasons with Dallas, Atlanta, Calgary and Buffalo. He also played 393 career games in the AHL and IHL, recording 127 goals and 257 points. A native of Edmonton who grew up in Winnipeg, Botterill played four seasons at the University of Michigan and helped lead the Wolverines to the NCAA title in 1996. He also played for Team Canada at the World Junior Championships in 1994, 1995 and 1996 and won gold medals in all three tournaments. Following his playing career, he returned to the University of Michigan to earn his MBA. He resides in Pittsburgh with his wife, Andrea.

DAN
BYLSMA HEAD COACH
Dan Bylsma has already become one of the most successful coaches in Penguins’ history, leading the team to a Stanley Cup title and winning the Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s “Most Outstanding Coach” in just two-plus years behind the bench. With Pittsburgh, Bylsma has recorded back-to-back 100-point seasons, has the best regular-season winning percentage (.653) in team history and is the winningest playoff coach in franchise history with 26 playoff victories and five (tied-Scotty Bowman) series victories. All-time under Bylsma, the Penguins boast a 114-56-19 regular season record, making him the third-winningest coach in team history. He is also the fifthfastest head coach in NHL history to hit the 100-win mark (163 games). Bylsma, who signed a three-year contract extension through the 2013-14 season, won the 2011 Jack Adams Award after a masterful coaching performance last year, steering the injury-depleted Penguins to a 49-25-8 record for 106 points (the 49 wins and 106 points both rank second in franchise history) and tied Philadelphia in points for the Atlantic Division title. The Penguins were in contention for the conference and division titles heading into the final weekend of the regular season despite the fact that the team suffered 350 man-games lost — including 119 games to the team’s three best players: Sidney Crosby (41 games); Evgeni Malkin (39); and Jordan Staal (39). Bylsma also directed the Penguins to a 12-game winning streak, tying for second-best in franchise history, and a 15-game unbeaten streak. Pittsburgh posted a 24-11-6 road record for 54 points. The team’s 54 road points are a new franchise record, while its 24 road wins tie for the team record (1992-93). In 2009-10 Bylsma completed his first full NHL season behind the bench for Pittsburgh, leading the club to a 47-28-7 record for 101 points and finishing only two points behind New Jersey for the Atlantic Division title. Under Bylsma’s leadership the Penguins set many milestones during the season, including tying a team record with seven straight road victories, becoming the second-fastest team in franchise history to 40
28
wins (66 games) and totaling the fourth-most wins (tied) in a season (47). Bylsma began the 2008-09 season with the first head coaching assignment of his career — with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League. He ended it by hoisting the Stanley Cup. In between, Bylsma authored one of the most spectacular coaching stories in the history of professional hockey. The Grand Haven, Mich. native was promoted to Pittsburgh on Feb. 15, 2009, and took over a club that was 10th overall in the Eastern Conference standings and facing questions as to whether a playoff berth was even a practical option. But he accepted the challenge with his trademark optimism, passion and raw determination. Unleashing a swift, skilled team that was built to go on the attack, imploring his players to “play on their toes, not on their heels,” Bylsma led the Penguins to an 18-3-4 record in 25 games, rising from 10th place to fourth in the conference and garnering not only a playoff spot, but home-ice advantage in the first round. In the playoffs, Bylsma’s team showed a steely resolve, clinching all four series on the road and twice rallying from 2-0 series deficits (against Washington in the second round and Detroit in the Stanley Cup Final). The Penguins beat the defending champion Red Wings four times in the last five games to claim the Cup, including a nerve-racking Game Seven at Detroit’s Joe Louis Arena and became the first team in professional sports since 1979 to win Game Seven of a championship round on the road. In the process Bylsma became the 14th rookie head coach, and just the fourth in the past 50 years, to capture the Stanley Cup. Of those 14, only Montreal’s Al MacNeil (1970-71) took over mid-season. Bylsma played nine NHL seasons as a right winger with Los Angeles and Anaheim from 1995-2004. He played 429 NHL regular season games, recording 19 goals and 62 points, and also played in the 2003 Stanley Cup Final with Anaheim. He began his coaching career as an assistant with the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks of the AHL in 2004-05 and made his NHL coaching debut as an assistant with the New York Islanders in 2005-06. Bylsma was an assistant coach at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton for two seasons from 2006-08 and was named head coach at the start of the 2008-09 season. He went 35-16-1-2 in 54 games with WB/S before being promoted to Pittsburgh. He played four seasons of college hockey at Bowling Green. Dan and his wife, Mary Beth, have one son, Bryan, and reside in the North Hills.

TONY
GRANATO ASSISTANT COACH
Tony Granato is in his third season on the Penguins’ coaching staff. Granato, among his many responsibilities, works with the Penguins’ forwards and penalty killing units. He oversaw the NHL’s No. 1-ranked penalty killing group with an 86.1-percent success rate in 2010-11. Prior to joining the Penguins, Granato spent six seasons behind the bench for the Colorado Avalanche and served two stints as Avalanche head coach from 2002-04 and 2008-09. Granato compiled a 104-78-17-16 record and led Colorado to a Northwest Division title in 2003. Granato, 46, joined the Avalanche organization in June, 2002, as an assistant coach. He was elevated to head coach on Dec. 18, 2002 and led the club to a 32-11-4-4 mark en route to its ninth consecutive division title. The following season Granato steered the Avalanche to a 40-22-13-7 finish and an appearance in the Western Conference semifinals. The Downers Grove, Illinois native served as an assistant coach for the Avalanche from 2005-08. Granato was promoted to his second tenure as the club’s head coach in 2008-09 and oversaw the development of a young Colorado team. Granato played 13 seasons in the NHL with the NY Rangers (1988-90), Los Angeles (1990-96) and San Jose (1996-2001). In 1997, he played in the NHL All-Star Game and was the recipient of the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy for overcoming a near career-ending brain injury. In 773 career games, the feisty forward posted 248 goals, 492 points and 1,425 penalty minutes. He tallied 16 goals, 43 points and 141 penalty minutes in 79 career postseason games and helped lead Los Angeles to a Stanley Cup Final berth in 1993. Granato played four years at the University of Wisconsin and was inducted into the Badgers’ Hall of Fame in 2000. Granato also played for the U.S. National team in 1987-88 and represented his country in the 1988 Olympic Games in Calgary. Tony and his wife, Linda, are the parents of four children and reside in the South Hills.

TODD
REIRDEN ASSISTANT COACH
Todd Reirden is in his second season as an assistant coach with the Penguins, joining Pittsburgh’s coaching staff on July 31, 2010 after coaching with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins the previous two seasons. Reirden, an NHL blueliner for parts of five seasons, works closely with the team’s defensemen. Under his guidance the Penguins defense ranked sixth (tied) in the NHL in 2010-11 in goals-against average (2.39) and surrendered only 196 goals (a 39-goal improvement from 2009-10). Reirden, 39, completed his first full season as WB/S head coach in 2009-10, leading a young and inexperienced team to an impressive 41-34-2-3 record, finishing third in the East Division, and earning a berth in the Calder Cup playoffs. Reirden joined the Penguins organization August 18, 2008 as an assistant coach in WB/S. A few months later he was promoted to interim head coach following Dan Bylsma’s promotion to Pittsburgh in February 2009. Reirden guided WB/S to a 14-9-3 mark in the final 26 games, and advanced to the second round of the AHL playoffs. Reirden then joined Pittsburgh’s extended playoff coaching staff and helped the team win the Stanley Cup championship in 2009. Prior to joining the Penguins organization, Reirden spent one season as an assistant coach with the Bowling Green Falcons (CCHA) — his alma mater. He was a teammate of Bylsma’s during the 1990-91 and 1991-92 seasons at Bowling Green. Selected by New Jersey in the 12th round (242nd overall) of the 1990 NHL Draft, Reirden played professionally for 13 seasons, retiring after the 2006-07 campaign with Graz EC of the Austrian Hockey League. He appeared in 183 NHL games with Edmonton, St. Louis, Atlanta and Phoenix, recording 46 points (11G-35A) and 181 penalty minutes. Todd and his wife, Shelby, have one son.

MIKE LANGE PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK PLAY-BY-PLAY ANNOUNCER
One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange is calling games in his 36th season with the Penguins, handling radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM “The X”. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.
PHIL BOURQUE PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK COLOR ANALYST
Two-time Stanley Cup Champion Phil Bourque is in his eighth season on the Penguins broadcast team, serving as color commentator alongside Mike Lange. A gritty winger/defenseman, Bourque was signed by Pittsburgh as a free agent in 1982, and went on to record 164 points (75G-89A) in 344 regular-season games with the Penguins between 1983 and 1992. For his career he totaled 199 points (88G-111A) in 477 games with the Penguins, New York Rangers and Ottawa. Since retiring from professional hockey in 2000, Bourque has co-hosted Penguins pre- and post-game shows on the Penguins Radio Network and worked as a contributor for ROOT Sports’ coverage of Penguins hockey.

BOB GROVE STUDIO HOST — PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK
After a 17-year career as the Penguins beat writer for the Washington Observer-Reporter, Bob Grove joined the team’s radio broadcasts in 1998 as a frequent studio host/co-host and is now in his seventh season as full-time host of the pre- and post-game broadcasts and intermissions on the Penguins Hockey Network. Grove wrote Pittsburgh Penguins: The Official History of the First 30 Years in 1997 and has contributed game notes to GOAL Magazine inserts or Icetime programs for every Pittsburgh home game since 1986. He was also a contributor to the second edition of Total Hockey and to The Game I’ll Never Forget. He is a senior writer covering hockey for the Pittsburgh Sports Report and also hosts “Bob Grove’s Hot Stove” on Penguins Radio 24/7.
STEVE MEARS PENGUINS RADIO 24/7 HOST/PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK
Steve Mears is in his third season as a member of the Penguins Radio Network team. In addition to his work on the Penguins’ radio and TV game broadcasts, he serves as the lead host of “Penguins Live” on Penguins Radio 24/7 and is also a contributor to PensTV at pittsburghpenguins.com. Mears came to the Penguins in September of 2009 after spending three seasons as the radio play-by-play voice of the New York Islanders. Prior to his time in New York, he spent four seasons as the director of media relations and broadcasting for the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs of the Central Hockey League. In 2005, he was named “CHL Broadcaster of the Year.” In addition to his radio work, he has also done various game broadcasts for Leafs TV and MSG television networks. A graduate of Franklin Regional High School, Mears grew up in Murrysville, PA and earned a degree in broadcasting from Bowling Green State University in 2002 while serving as the play-by-play voice of the BGSU Falcons. RULES OF THE GAME PRESENTED BY
BOARDING NEW NHL RULE CHANGE FOR 2011.12 BOARDING
To check or push a defenseless opponent in such a manner that causes the opponent to hit or impact into the boards dangerously or violently.
-
The player applying the check needs to ensure his opponent is not in a defenseless position and if so, must avoid contact.
-
The player with the puck needs to avoid placing himself in a dangerous and defenseless position.
-
Any unnecessary contact with a player playing the puck on an obvious “icing” or “off-sides” play that does not impact boards should be treated as “charging.”
DELAY OF GAME A player may be penalized when, in the opinion of the Referee, is delaying the game in any matter. (Normally six conditions) 1.) Player or goaltender intentionally shoots or throws the puck out
of the playing area. 2.) A defensive player or goaltender in the defensive zone shoots
the puck directly (without being deflected) over the glass. 3.) A player or goaltender intentionally knocks the net’s goalpost off
its moorings, which stops the play. 4.) The goaltender plays the puck out of the trapezoid behind the net. 5.) The goaltender freezes the puck rather than passing it to a
teammate when no player on the opposing team is within sufficient distance to apply offensive pressure. 6.) Any skater other than the goaltender who uses their hands to
make the puck unplayable.

INTERFERENCE INTERFERENCE
BODY POSITION: Body position will be determined as the player skating in front of or beside his opponent, traveling in the same direction. - A player who is behind an opponent, who does not have the puck, may not use his stick, body or free hand in order to restrain his opponent. POSSESSION OF THE PUCK: The last player to touch the puck, other than the goaltenders, will be considered the player in possession. RESTRAIN: The actions of a player or goaltender who does not have body position, but instead uses illegal means to impede an opponent who is not in possession of the puck. PICK: The action of a player or goaltender who checks an opponent who is not in possession of the puck and is unaware of the impending check/hit. FREE HAND: When a free hand is used to hold, pull, tug, grab or physically restrain an opponent from moving freely, this must be penalized as holding. STICK: A player who does not have body position on his opponent, who used his stick to impede or prevent his opponent from moving freely on the ice shall be assessed a hooking penalty.
OFF-SIDES Players of the attacking team must not precede the puck into the attacking zone. (Two determining factors) 1.) One of a player’s skates is not in contact with or behind the blue
line of the attacking zone before the puck enters that zone. 2.) The puck must completely cross the edge of the blue line nearest
the attacking zone to be considered inside the attacking zone.
The act of using the stick in a manner that enables a player to restrain an opponent.
-
When a player is checking another in such a way that there is only stick-to-stick contact, such action is not to be penalized as hooking.

JOIN THE RUSH!
TM
Introduced in the mid 1990’s, the American Eagle Student Rush Program is one of the most popular and well known marketing initiatives of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Designed to sell remaining game-day inventory, the American Eagle Student Rush program provides the Pittsburgh Penguins an opportunity to introduce new fans to the game of hockey at a discounted rate. Based upon the positive feedback the organization has received from current season ticket holders who were one-time Student Rush participants, the program has been successful in developing a long-term relationship with young, active Pittsburghers. During the 2011-12 season, at least 200 American Eagle Student Rush tickets will be made available for each regular season home game at CONSOL Energy Center. To avoid long waits outside during the winter months, the organization will host online pre-sales for most games. To receive pre-sale information, students can text “RUSH” to 32623 to register for the American Eagle Student Rush Mobile Club. Each pre-game text includes the opportunity to win two free tickets to the next home game! In addition to the 200 tickets offered each game, five special Student Rush nights will be held. At least 500 student rush tickets will be available for these select games at the American Eagle Gate. Music, prizes and giveaways will also be provided courtesy of American Eagle Outfitters. The special nights include:
• Thursday, October 20 vs. Montreal Canadiens – 7:00 pm • Tuesday, November 15 vs. Colorado Avalanche – 7:30 pm • Wednesday, February 15 vs. Anaheim Ducks – 7:00 pm • Friday, March 9 vs. Florida Panthers – 7:00 pm • Tuesday, March 27 vs. New York Islanders – 7:00 pm For more on the American Eagle Student Rush program, please visit www.pittsburghpenguins.com/studentrush

GAME NOTES By: Bob Grove
THE SERIES Tonight the Penguins will try to do something they haven’t done in almost four years: beat the Washington Capitals in a regular-season home game. Since Pittsburgh claimed a 4-3 home overtime win against Washington on Sergei Gonchar’s goal on Dec. 27, 2007, the Penguins are winless in seven regular-season home games against the Capitals (0-6-1) — including six consecutive regulation Evgeni Malkin has notched a total of seven points losses. A regulation loss (1+6) in his last four games against Washington. tonight by the Penguins would allow Washington to join Toronto, Montreal and the New York Rangers in sharing the record for the second-most consecutive regulation road wins over the Penguins (7). Pittsburgh lost eight consecutive home games to New Jersey from Feb. 9, 2002 to Oct. 20, 2005. . . The Capitals already hold the record for longest unbeaten streak against the Penguins in Pittsburgh, going 10-0-1 here from Dec. 18, 1982 to Nov. 20, 1985. . . Mike Knuble led the Capitals in scoring against Pittsburgh last season with three goals and four points, while Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang led the Penguins with two points each. . . The Penguins went 0-for-14 on the power play while going 1-3-0 against the Capitals last season. Washington outscored Pittsburgh, 9-4, in the series. . . Since Malkin scored at 2:13 of the second period of the Winter Classic at Heinz Field, the Penguins have gone 157:47 without scoring against the Capitals. . . Pittsburgh has scored 10 goals in its last six games against Washington. . . Michal Neuvirth, who earned shutouts over Pittsburgh last Feb. 6 (3-0) and Feb. 21 (1-0), has blanked the Penguins for 144:43 since allowing a Chris Kunitz goal last Dec. 23 in Washington. allowed the Penguins in the last 181:39 he’s played against them. . . Capitals’ coach Bruce Boudreau is 11-1-3 against the Penguins in the regular season since being named Washington’s coach in November, 2007. His only regulation loss came in Washington on March 9, 2008 (4-2); he is now 7-0-1 in 8 regular-season games in Pittsburgh. . . Malkin has points in each of his last four games against Washington (1-6-7). . . Alexander Ovechkin has one point (a goal here last Feb. 21) in his last four games against the Penguins. . . Pittsburgh is 91-82-16-4 all-time against Washington, including 52-35-7-1 at home. . . The teams’ next game is Dec. 1 at Washington, and their next game here is Jan. 22.
This is the second of three straight home games for Pittsburgh, which hosted Florida on Tuesday and will face Buffalo here Saturday. . . The Penguins opened the regular season one week Matt Cooke scored a pair of goals in the Penguins ago tonight in season opener in Vancouver on Oct. 6. Vancouver, where Matt Cooke scored a pair of goals and James Neal added one in a 4-3 shootout victory. It was Cooke’s ninth career two-goal game. Kris Letang broke an 0-for-9 drought in shootouts and Malkin added his third shootout goal in his last five attempts in the victory. . . Marc-Andre Fleury had stopped 17 of his last 18 shootout shots before the Penguins played in Calgary last Saturday. Pittsburgh completed its three-game, season-opening road trip last Sunday in Edmonton. . . After taking this Sunday off, Pittsburgh will play road games next week in Winnipeg on Monday and Minnesota on Tuesday. It will be the Penguins’ first game against the Winnipeg Jets since March 5, 1996, a 9-4 win here in Pittsburgh, and their first game in Winnipeg since Feb. 16, 1996, when Tom Barrasso made 32 saves in

a 1-0 victory. . . Tonight Pittsburgh and Washington are wearing special commemorative patches on their jerseys honoring the memory of the Lokomotiv Yaroslavl team members who died in a plane crash last month. Players from both teams will sign the game-worn sweaters, which will then be auctioned at nhl.com to raise money for the Lokomotiv team members’ children and families. Among the new faces in the Capitals’ lineup this season are left wing Troy Brouwer, right wing Joel Ward, defenseman Roman Hamrlik, goaltender Tomas Vokoun and center Jeff Halpern, a Maryland native who began his career with Washington. . . This is Washington’s road opener, as it began the season with home games against Carolina last Saturday and Tampa Bay on Monday. The Capitals return home to face Ottawa this Saturday and Florida next Tuesday. . . Neuvirth, not Vokoun, was expected to start the Capitals’ opener. . . After suffering a secondround playoff sweep at the hands of Tampa Bay last spring, defenseman Mike Green told the Washington Post that he, Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstrom and Alexander Semin have to do more for their team. “It’s time that we stepped up, grew up and became, or at least try harder to become, the leaders of this team in everything we do,” he said. “The time is now. It has to be. At the end of the day, we play the game to win a Stanley Cup, not Mike Green told the Washington Post that he, for anything else. We’ve Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstrom and Alexander wasted enough time.” Semin have to do more for their team.

DEFENSIVE INDIFFERENCE? MAYBE NOT By: Robert Edward Healy, III
Defense wins championships. Just not … scoring championships. The Penguins have had four players win 13 Art Ross Trophies as the NHL’s annual leading scorer, and the team takes the unusual step of commemorating those players on banners that hang from the rafters at CONSOL Energy Center. For the Penguins, though, scoring titles are anything but unusual, as Pittsburgh has won more Art Ross Trophies than any other team in league history. The Penguins have also had three players — all forwards — earn five Hart Trophies as league MVP and have paid homage to that award in CONSOL’s rafters, as well. But for top defenders in the history of the Penguins, there are no banners. Except for those three Stanley Cup ones, of course. “It’s kind of cliché, but defense wins championships,” defenseman Deryk Engelland said. “The guys we have in this room, no matter who it is, really pride themselves on having good D coverage and goalsagainst. And to top it off, we have some great goaltending, so that helps a lot, too.”
Pittsburgh has won more Art Ross Trophies than any other team in league history.

The Penguins have had one player win the James Norris Memorial Trophy as the league’s top defenseman (Randy Carlyle in 1981). Even then, Carlyle’s offense — 83 points from the blue line that season — probably had as much to do with that Norris win as his defense did. Still, there’s no banner at CONSOL Energy Center for Carlyle. So how does a defender get his name on a banner? Simple: Last season, Marc-Andre Fleury was considered by many experts to be a top Win the Hart Trophy. contender for the Hart Trophy. That’s easier said than done, but a defensive player getting the same treatment as a Penguins’ scoring legend was close to becoming a reality last season. Goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury was considered to be a top contender for the 2011 Hart Trophy by many experts. And while he didn’t win the league’s MVP award, Fleury was the obvious pick as team MVP after putting together his finest season to date. “He was awesome the whole year,” Engelland said. “He was a huge part of our winning, especially when we lost our [top forwards].” “With all of the guys going down and missing that many games, [Fleury] had to buckle down and make some key saves,” forward Pascal Dupuis said. “And he really did that for us.” Fleury rebounded from a rocky start last season to finish with a 36-20-5 record, a .918 save percentage and a career-best 2.32 goals-against average. With Malkin and Crosby out for almost and exactly half, respectively, of last season with injuries, Fleury was never needed more. And he never played better. continued on page 97

He even went 15-1-1 during one impressive stretch. “When you have 106 [team] points in the regular season, a lot of people need to play well,” defenseman Ben Lovejoy said. “But there were nights that he [Fleury] carried us on his back, and he was clearly our MVP.” As a team, the Penguins finished seventh out of 30 NHL clubs in goals-against last season, up from 18th in both 2008-09 and 2009-10. Newcomers Paul Martin and Zbynek Michalek joined Brooks Orpik and Kris Letang to bolster the team’s defense, and the Penguins’ yearly NHL awards candidates, for once, were not goal-scorers but goal-preventers. And while Fleury had a run at the Hart, Letang’s case for the Norris was believed by some to be an even stronger one. Letang was the lone defenseman to play in all 82 games for the Penguins last season, and he finished with a plus-15 rating while routinely being matched up against other teams’ top scorers. He also led the Penguins with 42 assists while finishing second on the club with 50 points. “As a defensive unit, you love it when you see a guy like Kris Letang,” Johnson said. “He can play both ends of the ice. He can be on the forecheck, and next thing you know, he’s back and breaking up a play.
Kris Letang is an offensive defenseman who can play well on both ends of the ice. continued on page 98

“You need some offense from your defensemen too, and he can bring it from both areas of the ice.” With just one Norris winner in team history, perhaps a defensive banner isn’t called for at CONSOL Energy Center just yet. But if Letang were to join the ranks, what would the players think then of some recognition for the D? “If someone wins it in here, it’s a huge accomplishment and a great thing for them,” Engelland said. “Whoever wins it I’m sure will be Even though it’s a cliche, Deryk Engelland believes that defense wins championships. happy that they get it, and they’ll want, next season, to do it again.” Fleury agreed that there should be a Norris banner at CONSOL Energy Center should one of his teammates win the award, but stressed that joining the list of Hart winners already hanging there is not something that he worries about. “It’s possible,” he said, “but I’m not starting the season thinking about winning the Hart Trophy. “I go into the first game and try to win that game, and that’s it. I’m not thinking about picking up trophies. I just want to try to win as often as possible.” Added Lovejoy about a Penguin winning the Norris, “It would certainly be a very cool thing, but I think that everyone in the room would rather win the Stanley Cup. You don’t grow up dreaming of winning the Norris Trophy; you dream of your team winning the Stanley Cup.” So perhaps a Norris banner at CONSOL Energy Center can wait, especially if a fourth Stanley Cup banner goes up instead.

I feel
.
Ask a grieving child how they’re feeling and you may get a lot of answers. Or none at all. For many, finding the words to express their feelings can be difficult. But while finding the right words may not be easy, finding the right place to turn to for help can be. At the Caring Place, we’re here when grieving children need someone to listen, to talk, or to just sit and be. For more information about one of our peer support groups or to volunteer, call us today.

LITTLE PENGUINS LEARN TO PLAY HOCKEY Sidney Crosby and his family wanted to help parents introduce their kids to the game of hockey — and to do it without having to incur a prohibitive up-front cost. The result is the Little Penguins Learn to Play Hockey program — a tremendous, one-of-a-kind opportunity for kids aged 4-7 to receive free head-to-toe hockey equipment and 10 sessions of on-ice instruction. The 2011-12 season will be the fourth consecutive year for the Little Penguins program, which continues to grow. Last season twenty-one rinks hosted the program and four girls-only locations were added. This season, even more rinks will serve as Little Penguins partners! Since the program began, over 2,000 youngsters have received equipment and learned to play hockey. This season another 1,000 kids will have the opportunity to receive free gear and learn the game. Thanks to the combined efforts of Crosby, the Penguins, Reebok and Dick’s Sporting Goods, all participants receive full sets of Reebok SC87 Crosby-endorsed equipment, including skates, stick, helmet, gloves, pants, shoulder pads, shin pads, elbow pads and an equipment bag, as well as an official Little Penguins jersey and Little Penguins helmet stickers. After a high profile promotional period early in the season, the program sells out quickly when registration takes place online. During this promotion, parents may view information regarding participating rinks, starting dates, and times of instructional sessions, which are listed on the Penguins’ website prior to the registration date. “We were both excited and amazed by the reaction to the Little Penguins program in previous seasons, and we’re happy to be able

to offer the program again for another year,” Crosby said. “The goal is to continue to create opportunities for more kids in the Pittsburgh area to take up hockey. With the Little Penguins program, they can receive head-to-toe hockey equipment and learn the game in a fun and organized way.” “It’s a tribute to Sid and his family that they want to reach out and create this incredible opportunity for children in the Pittsburgh area,” said Penguins CEO and president David Morehouse. “One of their goals was to help parents by providing free head-to-toe hockey equipment to properly equip their children. The Penguins are honored to join Reebok and Dick’s Sporting Goods in supporting Sid and this great program.” Local rinks participating in the program this year include the Airport Ice Arena in Moon Township, the Belmont Ice Complex in Kittanning, the Bladerunners Ice Arenas in Bethel Park, Harmarville and Warrendale, Center Ice Arena in Delmont, Galactic Ice in Altoona, the Hess Ice Arena in New Castle, the Ice Castle in Castle Shannon, Iceoplex at Southpointe, the Ice Connection in Valencia, the Ice Garden-Rostraver in Belle Vernon, the Ice Mine in Connellsville, the Ice Zone in Youngstown, Kirk-Nevin Ice Arena in Greensburg, the Mt. Lebanon Recreation Center, the Morgantown Municipal Ice Arena, the North Central Recreation Center in Ebensburg, the RMU Island Sports Center on Neville Island, the S&T Bank Arena in Indiana, the Valley Sports arena in New Kensington and Wheeling Park. ICEBURGH A delight for children of all ages, Iceburgh — the official mascot of the Pittsburgh Penguins not only provides fans with exciting game entertainment but this large, energetic bird can also be seen at a multitude of community events and elementary schools throughout the greater Pittsburgh area. Iceburgh arrived on the scene in 1992 and is a staple at all team events. During Penguins’ home games, fans most definitely notice the antics of Iceburgh leading sections of fans in cheers, greeting young children on the concourse or displaying his athleticism on-ice between periods. In 1995, Iceburgh made his Hollywood debut, starring alongside Jean Claude Van Damme in the motion picture “Sudden Death.” He has gained both national and international exposure through film, TV and a variety of personal appearances. Iceburgh wasted no time getting acquainted with his new home at CONSOL Energy Center in September of 2010. You can find Iceburgh sliding down stair banisters, dancing in the stands and tossing t-shirts to fans. Iceburgh has performed in Russia and Japan, was featured in the opening of ESPN’s SportsCenter and recently performed in front of a record crowd of over 68,000 at Heinz Field for the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic. He is also regularly featured on in-game videos and has appeared in advertisements and television promos on ROOT Sports. In addition to his annual trek to the NHL All-Star Game, Iceburgh makes annual appearances at the Mascot Olympics held in Orlando, FL. If you would like to request an Iceburgh appearance at your next event, please complete the online form by visiting the community section of pittsburghpenguins.com.

GIRL’S HOCKEY DAY By: Mark Boyle
A group of young girls were given the opportunity to see what the game of hockey is all about during a one-day practice in October.
It was a great day for hockey — Girls Hockey. On Saturday, October 1st, a group of girls ages 10 to 14 participated in a Girls Only Learn to Play Hockey program at Blade Runners in Warrendale, hosted by the North Pittsburgh Wildcats. This was a one-day practice that gave girls who had never played on a team before the chance to see what ice hockey is all about. For those who had played before, this was a day to show off their skills and have fun. “It’s an initiative to get girls in the game,” Donna Ledwin, coordinator of Girls Hockey, said. “We’re trying to do our part and grow the game for the girls.” The players lined up on the goal line as their instructor set off towards the other end of the ice. “Glide with your left foot,” she said, her voice echoing throughout the rink. The skaters followed her lead as each girl glided down the ice using only her left foot to move, keeping the right one pointed straight ahead. They repeated this exercise a few times before they incorporated both feet to get a feel of how to skate down the ice. Some of the athletes were excelling at this, but those who were struggling had help from older, experienced hockey players. These experienced players demonstrated how to quickly come to a stop by turning their heels out, something the younger players were eager to try. continued on page 146

As the hour went on, the girls got faster and more confident as they propelled down the ice, getting ready to work on their puck handling. They skated down the ice in pairs, practicing their passing to one another. But now that the drills were over, the real fun began as the girls got the chance to partake in cross ice game. “It was fun,” Megan McDermott, a 12-year-old skater, said. “I liked that we got to play games, There were cheers all around at the end of a fun day. and it was all girls.” To end the day, the girls lined up in the neutral zone and one by one took off towards the opposite end of the ice where an instructor stood with his hands on the glass, giving the girls just enough space to slide under him. The first girl to slide under then got up and stood next to the instructor, putting her hands on the glass, making a tunnel that the next girl would have to slide through. This was McDermott’s favorite part of the day, and it was clear from the others’ reactions and cheers that this was a great way to end practice. “We’d love to see the girls at our tryouts,” Ledwin said. “We want to get them in the game.” And it is a fast-moving game, which is enticing to a lot of players. “What I like best about hockey is that it doesn’t take forever,” The girls got faster and more confident McDermott said. “It’s not like as they propelled down the ice softball. You get more playing time.” working on their puck handling.

COMMUNITY UPDATE FREE GAME FOR KIDS MAKES LASTING MEMORIES FOR FAMILIES By: Juliet Del Signore
Never before has CONSOL Energy Center hosted such an energetic and enthusiastic crowd as they did during the Penguins’ preseason match up against the Minnesota Wild on September 24th. For the promotion known as Free Game for Kids, the Pittsburgh Penguins distributed 18,000 tickets to area youth to thank them for their support. Tickets were distributed to local youth hockey organizations and a number of local charities that serve children. In addition, the Penguins reserved one of their finest suites for 16 young Penguins fans and their families from Autism Speaks, Make-AWish Foundation of Greater PA and Southern WV and The Children’s Institute. Aside from a great view of the game, they also received a gift bag to take home and their very own surprise visit from Iceburgh, the Penguins’ mascot. The Free Game for Kids event gave the Pittsburgh Penguins organization a chance to make a difference in the lives of some of their youngest fans through their partnerships with local charities.

Marketing/Communications coordinator at Make-A-Wish Foundation of Greater PA and Southern WV, Dana Antkowiak, stated, “Our partnership with the Penguins gives the children a chance to forget about their illnesses and take part in some great fun with other kids who share their love of hockey. Our Wish kids enjoy these experiences immensely — their smiles say it all.” The party suite provided an opportunity for families to have a “game day” experience together and put all other things temporarily out of their minds. “This is an amazing experience for our family because if it wasn’t for the Penguins organization it wouldn’t be possible to come to a game together as a family,” said Billie Jo Robinson, mother of one of the Wish children. Needless to say, a wonderful time was had by all.

PROUD HISTORY, BRIGHT FUTURE By: Mike Prisuta
It was on display on, of all places, a golf course, what the Penguins have become. The occasion was a reunion of the 1990-91 Stanley Cup champions, the first of three such titles in Pittsburgh franchise history. That alone stands as a signature endorsing how far the Penguins have come from the days when flirting with bankruptcy was an unavoidable fact of life. But even more revealing was the event’s alumni representation. Joey Mullen was there, but so, too, was Dennis Owchar. There was Ronnie Francis, but also Francois Leroux and Pierre Larouche. Mario Lemieux and Larry Murphy were on hand, and so was Greg Malone. It didn’t matter if the uniform of the day back in the day had been blue & white or black & gold, or even both for those representing Penguins of a more recent vintage such as current head coach Dan Bylsma and current assistant coach Tony Granato.

Mullen is an assistant coach with Philadelphia this season, Malone the head pro scout in Tampa Bay and Francis the director of hockey operations for Carolina. But on this day it was as if they’d never left. The Penguins have become that type of family, one that represents what looks suspiciously like a storied franchise. “It feels that way,” Bylsma agreed. “It feels that way when you become a Penguin. And then when you get into the organization and you see, on a day like this with your team and you see all these players, the Hall-of-Famers, the unbelievable hockey players, not to mention their best hockey player. RON FRANCIS “It definitely feels like a storied director of hockey operations for Carolina franchise. Compared to the other experiences I’ve had it certainly is a storied franchise with a great deal of history.” With such pedigree comes expectation, and the Penguins are no exception. Even with Sidney Crosby’s status regarding an eventual return from concussion still unresolved as the Penguins left for a seasonopening, three-game road trip to Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton they were being identified as contenders if not potential or even eventual champions by a variety of publications and prognostications. Scott Burnside of ESPN.com went as far as to predict a fourth Cup on the immediate horizon, anticipating a Penguins-Chicago Blackhawks Stanley Cup Final in 2012 with the Penguins ultimately prevailing. ESPN The Magazine called it as San Jose over Pittsburgh in the Final. E.J. Hradek and Dan Rosen of NHL.com likewise picked the Penguins to win the Eastern Conference (no Stanley Cup predictions have been forthcoming as yet from those two). continued on page 158

THEY EXPECT NO LESS FROM THEMSELVES AS TEAMMATES, FROM THE GROUP AS A TEAM AND FOR THOSE WHO BUY THE TICKETS AND THE JERSEYS AND MAKE THE CONSOL ENERGY CENTER COME TO LIFE ON A HOCKEY NIGHT IN PITTSBURGH. The Sporting News also predicted the Penguins would win the Eastern Conference before falling to the Sharks in the Final, and summed up Bylsma’s team thusly: “The Penguins managed to find ways to win without Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin last season. Now that Malkin is ready, getting Crosby back healthy would immediately make the Penguins the favorite to win the Eastern Conference, if not the Stanley Cup.” No, it isn’t just in Western Pennsylvania or throughout Penguins Nation that this team, this organization, this franchise is held in such high regard. Such plaudits are preferable to being labeled prime contenders for the draft lottery. But with such respect comes pressure to perform. That’s what a storied franchise does and that’s how a storied franchise is defined. The Penguins are well aware of such parameters. They know and understand that recognition of who they are comes with an implied understanding of what they should become. It’s nothing the players and coaches intend to either cite or hide from. They expect no less from themselves as teammates, from the group as a team and for those who buy the tickets and the jerseys and make the CONSOL Energy Center come to life on a Hockey Night in Pittsburgh. “I think it’s pretty high,” Bylsma said of the standard to which the franchise now annually holds itself accountable. “I think the expectation that we’re going to compete for a Stanley Cup, that’s the type of organization that we have, the type of players that we have, the type of team that we have. I think it’s pretty high and I think that’s an understanding of the quality of our organization. “It’s not just about the players; it’s about the organization and the team. Certainly the players that are a part of that make it such.”

MOBILI
OFF-ICE WITH BRENT JOHNSON WHERE YOU FROM? I am originally from Farmington Hills, Michigan.
It’s about a five-hour drive west of Pittsburgh. Right now I live in Arlington, Virginia, which is a four-hour drive southeast of Pittsburgh. WHO WAS YOUR IDOL GROWING UP? My idol was my grandfather
[Hall of Famer Sid Abel] and my father [former pro goalie Bob Johnson] both. My grandfather when I was younger, because he used to take me to the rinks with him all the time. Then my father, because he was a goalie. As soon I turned into a goalie, in that position I idolized my father. WHAT’S THE BEST ADVICE YOU’VE EVER BEEN GIVEN? As a
goalie, my grandfather would always say, “Keep your dobber up,” which means don’t let much get to you. Because in this position, if you don’t have a short memory, things can go bad very quickly. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE SPORT TO PLAY OTHER THAN HOCKEY? Definitely golf, because it’s just you against everyone. It’s
actually you against yourself, and you can call penalties on yourself, which is fantastic. It shows a lot of character, I think, that people are very honest about the game. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE MOVIE? That’s too tough. I have many,
many favorites. I guess I’d have to do one for every genre. My favorite scary movie would be Halloween (the first one). My favorite drama would be Legends of the Fall. And for comedy, going back to the 80s here, maybe Tootsie. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE FOOD? Definitely pasta. Any type of pasta or pizza, depending on how many days before a game I can eat it. WHAT’S THE BEST MEAL YOU CAN PERSONALLY COOK? I can
cook great fondue, but that’s really simple. All you do is just throw it in, but I love that. IF YOU COULD HAVE AN ENTRANCE SONG, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
Metallica’s “One.” That is my go to. Or it’s also called “Promontory” from the movie Last of the Mohicans. That one gets you fired up.
160
WHO WOULD YOUR ULTIMATE GOLF FOURSOME BE? If I can make a fivesome or a sixsome, I’d do maybe just like the Rat Pack or something like that. I mean, I think that playing golf with Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr. or Dean Martin — I think those three guys would be up there. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE OFF-ICE ACTIVITY? Being with my baby daughter Everly. She’s six months old now and she brightens up every part of my day. WHY DO YOU WEAR NUMBER 1? I wore 35 when I came into the league, and then I don’t remember where I went, but I couldn’t get 35. So I went to 1, had a great year and stuck with it. And my dad was number 1, as well. DO YOU HAVE ANY PREGAME RITUALS OR THINGS THAT YOU HAVE TO DO? The list
is long. I put on everything on my left side first, but this has become just a life ritual so I do that every day. I look at the [pregame countdown] clock in the room — this is really weird — at 6:12, at 4:35, at 4:12, at 3:36, 3:12 and then at 2:37 is when I go out on the ice. I look at that because 435, 336, 237 all equal 12, and that’s my favorite number. That’s my grandfather’s number. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT GAME DAY?
Just jumping on the ice to either the home or away crowd. Sometimes you’re a little amped up when you’re at home, you’ve got the whole crowd cheering for you. And every pregame ritual that I have. I WOULD NOT BE WHERE I AM HERE TODAY WITHOUT…
The help of my mom and dad.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT
JIM PAEK By: Jason Seidling
When defenseman Jim Paek debuted with the Penguins against the New York Islanders on Oct. 13, 1990 at Nassau County Coliseum, the Seoul, South Korea native became the first Koreanborn player to skate in the National Hockey League. Although he played a majority of the 1990-91 season with the Canadian National team, Paek rejoined the Penguins during the postseason, appearing in eight games while helping the team capture its first-ever Stanley Cup championship against Minnesota. In the series-clinching game against the North Stars, Paek scored his first-ever NHL goal in the Penguins’ 8-0 victory on May 25, 1991. Paek became a NHL regular the following season, earning the team’s rookie of the year award, as the Penguins won the Cup again. His best season with the team came in ‘92-93 when he established career highs in games played (77), goals (3), assists (15) and points (18) while helping Pittsburgh claim the Presidents’ Trophy as the NHL’s top regular-season team. Paek played with the Penguins until February 1994 when he was traded to the Los Angeles Kings with Marty McSorley in exchange for Tomas Sandstrom and Shawn McEachern. He finished his NHL career with the Ottawa Senators in ‘94-95, before splitting the final eight years of his playing career between the now-defunct International Hockey League and Great Britain’s top professional league. Now 44, Paek lives in Michigan with his wife, Kortney, and the couple’s two children, Megan and Kyler. He is entering his seventh year as an assistant coach with the Detroit Red Wings’ top minor-league affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League. During the 2007-08 season he lifted the Stanley Cup for a third time while coaching Detroit’s ‘Black Aces’ taxi squad during its Cup run, which ironically came against the Penguins. We caught up with Paek when he visited Pittsburgh earlier this summer for a reunion of the ’91 Cup team:
164
WHAT MADE THE ‘91 TEAM SPECIAL? That’s something you can’t put into one word. Starting from the top with Craig (Patrick) down to Bob (Johnson) and on through Mario (Lemieux) — it was a real special team where every piece fit the puzzle. YOU CALL BOB JOHNSON YOUR HOCKEY HERO. WHAT WAS YOUR FONDEST MEMORY OF HIM? One day ‘Badger’ stopped me in
an elevator and said, “Jim, every day you have to set goals for yourself.” That really stuck with me. I still set goals to help me improve every day. WHAT MADE JOHNSON SO SPECIAL? He treated everyone as
equals. He talked to everyone on the same level. That made you want to play well for him and succeed. He was just a fantastic man. WHEN DID IT HIT YOU THAT YOU GUYS WERE GOOD ENOUGH TO WIN THE CUP? When Mario stood up and said “let’s go boys” during
the Cup Final against Minnesota. You knew he wanted to win badly. That made us all want to win for him because of what he meant to the team and what he had gone through. That was the kind of impact he had on his teammates. WHO HAD THE BEST HAIR ON THOSE EARLY ‘90S TEAMS? I have
to say me because I don’t know if you’ve ever seen a Korean with curly, shoulder-length hair. I shouldn’t be saying this, but I could put it into a pony tail if I wanted to and it looked fantastic! My current players like to look back on my old hockey cards. One of them last year went dressed for Halloween as Jim Paek — mullet included! WHAT DO YOUR KIDS DO TO KEEP YOU BUSY? My son, Kyler,
recently started to play hockey. My daughter, Megan, is very artistic and is a tennis player. CAN YOU DESCRIBE WHAT IT’S LIKE FOR YOU ANYTIME YOU VISIT PITTSBURGH? It’s always fantastic because I have a lot of good
memories and made a lot of great friends. It’s amazing that when you come back to the city, the people still remember your name. That makes you feel very warm inside. People always thank you for that season – that tells you a lot about the people here. IN ADDITION TO COACHING IN THE AHL, YOU’VE ALSO COACHED YOUTH HOCKEY. CAN YOU TALK ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF TEACHING YOUNG PLAYERS THE PROPER FUNDAMENTALS? It
is very important. I try to get on the ice and help the young kids with hockey schools to help develop their skills. It’s very important that young kids get very good coaching so they don’t get bad habits.

PENGUINS PROFILE
BROOKS ORPIK By: Mark Madden
When asked if the NHL wanted to legislate hitting out of hockey, Brooks Orpik smiled: “Geez, I hope [hitting] doesn’t disappear. I’ll be out of the league pretty quick.” The Penguins defenseman has been best known for his physical prowess during his seven NHL seasons. He has a 6-foot-2, 228-pound frame, and the aggressiveness and speed to use it violently. But the Boston College product is also surprisingly quick, confident with the puck and always in the right place. If Defense 101 was a college course, Orpik could be a professor. Orpik is also a leader, the Penguins’ conscience, always saying and doing the right things. He’s a big catalyst in many ways. But yes, Orpik does like to hit. “I don’t know if the [NHL] is trying to take hitting out of the game,” said Orpik, 31. “They’re just trying to make it a cleaner game. There’s a fine line [with] trying to keep the physicality but trying to make it as safe as possible for all the guys. “Every year we watch these videos on what’s acceptable and what’s not. There are a lot of parallels with football. Guys are getting bigger, stronger and faster. The speed of the game is wide open. The potential for dangerous hits is there.” No team knows that better than the Penguins, who lost captain Sidney Crosby for the rest of the 2010-11 season after he suffered a concussion in early January. Crosby still hadn’t returned to game action by the start of the current campaign. Near the end of training camp, Orpik said Crosby was looking pretty good during drills. “He’s not shying away from anything, which is probably a good thing,” Orpik said. “He looks like the same old Sid.” continued on page 171

continued from page 169
One advantage of a long summer is being able to rest and heal from the past season.
Crosby had not been cleared for contact by camp’s end. When he is, who’s going to be the first to hit him? “I don’t know,” Orpik said. “I was up against him in 2-on-2 drills. He doesn’t have a red jersey on. He’s wearing the same equipment as the rest of us — maybe a different helmet, but nothing you really notice on the ice. “You probably go a little easier than usual — and then he makes you look stupid.” Crosby spent Penguins practices and game-day skates wearing an opposite-color helmet than the rest of his teammates. Orpik has been dealing with an injury of his own, a sports hernia that required surgery. Orpik had the same operation on the left side of his body the prior off-season before undergoing the procedure on his right side this past summer. “The previous year [2009-10] I battled [the injury] all year and played with it,” Orpik said. “This past year, it wasn’t something I had to deal with during the season. It developed when I was working out. As my workouts got tougher and tougher, I started having issues with my lower abs. continued on page 172
171
continued from page 171
“I wanted to get it taken care of this summer rather than have it act up during the season and have to miss a lot of games. Everything seems to be on track. That’s one advantage of a long summer. You always want to have a long season, but we had a lot of guys get pretty banged up last year.” The Penguins have a deep defensive corps: Seven quality blueliners at the NHL level, several more in the system. Joseph Morrow, the Penguins’ 2011 first-round pick, is in juniors. Simon Despres, 2010’s first-rounder, is starting his rookie pro season with the Penguins’ Wilkes Barre-Scranton farm team. When it was suggested that Orpik, Kris Letang, Paul Martin and Zbynek Michalek rank with any other NHL team’s top four defenseman, Orpik replied, “That’s for other people to judge, but it’s definitely a formidable top four. “I would say we have a formidable top seven. I’d put us up against any group in the league. One thing that separates us from a lot of teams is the skating ability everyone has. With the way the game is played now, you can’t really hold or use your stick as much. You have to be able to skate. ~ BROOKS ORPIK We have seven guys with above-average skating ability.”
“I WOULD SAY WE HAVE A FORMIDABLE TOP SEVEN. I’D PUT US UP AGAINST ANY GROUP IN THE LEAGUE. . .”
