MARIO
LEMIEUX CO-OWNER/CHAIRMAN
Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in National Hockey League history, is in his 13th season as co-owner and chairman of the board of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice — including a Stanley Cup championship in 2009. The Penguins entered the 2011-12 season having sold out 210 straight games (and counting) while setting new standards for local television ratings, merchandise sales, website traffic and social media. The ownership group also was proud to open the sparkling new CONSOL Energy Center last season — a state-of-the-art venue that was named Best NHL Arena in a survey of Sports Business Journal readers and was a finalist for Facility of the Year at the 2011 Sports Business Awards. Opening the doors of the arena in August, 2010, was the culmination of a 10-year quest by Lemieux and Burkle to ensure the long-term future of the Penguins in Pittsburgh. “Le Magnifique” was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. An immaculately gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — thereby becoming the first playerowner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $8 million for charity. RON
BURKLE CO-OWNER
Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 13th season as co-owner of the Penguins. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they have developed one of the most outstanding ownership groups in all of professional sports. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his essential role in negotiations for a new arena. Burkle was proud to be on hand when the Penguins opened CONSOL Energy Center with their first regular season game against the Philadelphia Flyers on Oct. 7, 2010. Under the leadership of Lemieux and Burkle, the Penguins have sold out every game for four-plus seasons and finished in the top 10 (out of 122 pro teams) in ESPN the Magazine’s “Ultimate Standings” in each of the past three years. The Penguins reached the Stanley Cup Final back-to-back in 2008 and 2009 winning the Cup in 2009. The team’s financial strength has enabled hockey management to spend to the salary cap, sign the team’s young core players to long-term contracts and put a competitive team on the ice year after year. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is co-chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League and the Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy. He has received numerous awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year and the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year award.

DAVID
MOREHOUSE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER & PRESIDENT
David Morehouse has quickly established himself as one of the most dynamic senior executives in the National Hockey League. Since being named President of the Penguins in April, 2007, Morehouse has reshaped the team’s image and strategic vision with an emphasis on branding, fan relations, youth marketing, community interaction, corporate outreach and innovative technology. He was given the additional responsibilities of Chief Executive Officer in September, 2010, and now oversees every aspect of the Penguins’ operations, reporting directly to co-owners Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle. Under Morehouse’s leadership, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in all of professional sports — ranked in the top 10 out of 122 pro teams in each of the past three years in ESPN The Magazine’s “Ultimate Standings.” The Penguins were named No. 3 overall out of 122 teams in Fan Relations in 2011. The team also was a finalist for Professional Sports Team of the Year at the 2011 Sports Business Awards, and the new CONSOL Energy Center was a finalist for Facility of the Year. The Penguins have sold out every game for four-plus seasons — a streak that had reached 210 games before the start of the 2011-12 season. They also have sold out all suites for three-plus seasons and set new standards for local TV ratings, website traffic, merchandise sales and social media. Morehouse himself was named 2011 CEO Communicator of the Year by the Pittsburgh Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America. The Pittsburgh native joined the Penguins in 2004 as Senior Consultant on the new arena project following a career in national politics that included stints at the White House, Pentagon and on Capitol Hill as well as key roles in two Presidential campaigns. Morehouse attended the Community College of Allegheny County and Duquesne University and received a master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. He and his wife, Vanessa, have three children and live in Sewickley Heights.

RAY
SHERO EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT & GENERAL MANAGER
Ray Shero, 49, is at the vanguard of the NHL’s new breed of general managers — steeped in family hockey tradition but on the cutting-edge of new technology and modernization in hockey operations, player relations and team management. Shero was named GM of the Penguins in May, 2006, and his fresh ideas, family-friendly environment and calm but firm management style helped transform a franchise that did not qualify for the playoffs from 2002-06 into one that regularly challenges for the Stanley Cup — reaching the Final in 2008 and winning the Cup in 2009. He’s been especially proactive in keeping the core of the team together, signing Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Marc-Andre Fleury, Jordan Staal, Brooks Orpik and Kris Letang, among others, to longterm contracts. One of his most successful moves came behind the bench during the 2008-09 season, when he promoted Dan Bylsma to head coach on Feb. 15, 2009. Bylsma went on to lead the Penguins to the Stanley Cup in 2009 and then won the Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s “Most Outstanding Coach” in 2011. Ray’s father, Fred, won two Stanley Cups as head coach of the Philadelphia Flyers in 1974-75, and the Sheros are one of the few father-son tandems to have their names on the Stanley Cup. Ray built his managerial style during 14 seasons as an NHL assistant general manager — six with the Ottawa Senators and eight with the Nashville Predators. Shero played college hockey at St. Lawrence University, twice serving as team captain, and was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in 1982. He spent seven years as a player agent before making the move to the front office. The native of St. Paul, Minn., is actively involved with USA Hockey and is a member of the USA Hockey National Team Advisory Group. Ray and his wife, Karen, and their two sons reside in Upper St. Clair.

JASON
BOTTERILL ASSISTANT GENERAL MANAGER
Jason Botterill is in his third full season as assistant general manager after being promoted to his current position in May, 2009, by GM Ray Shero. As assistant GM, Botterill works closely with Shero on all hockey-related matters, including scouting, player development and contract negotiations. He also manages hockey operations and acts as GM for the club’s top minor-league affiliate, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League. Prior to his promotion, Botterill, 35, worked two seasons as director of hockey administration with the Penguins; his responsibilities included salary cap management, professional and amateur scouting and overseeing prospect development. Botterill’s avant-garde approach and understanding of the salary cap has been a major asset for the Penguins. Before joining the Pittsburgh organization, he worked with NHL Central Registry and also scouted for the Dallas Stars. Botterill was a first-round draft pick (20th overall) by Dallas in 1994 and played 88 NHL games over six seasons with Dallas, Atlanta, Calgary and Buffalo. He also played 393 career games in the AHL and IHL, recording 127 goals and 257 points. A native of Edmonton who grew up in Winnipeg, Botterill played four seasons at the University of Michigan and helped lead the Wolverines to the NCAA title in 1996. He also played for Team Canada at the World Junior Championships in 1994, 1995 and 1996 and won gold medals in all three tournaments. Following his playing career, he returned to the University of Michigan to earn his MBA. He resides in Pittsburgh with his wife, Andrea.

DAN
BYLSMA HEAD COACH
Dan Bylsma has already become one of the most successful coaches in Penguins’ history, leading the team to a Stanley Cup title and winning the Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s “Most Outstanding Coach” in just two-plus years behind the bench. With Pittsburgh, Bylsma has recorded back-to-back 100-point seasons, has the best regular-season winning percentage (.653) in team history and is the winningest playoff coach in franchise history with 26 playoff victories and five (tied-Scotty Bowman) series victories. All-time under Bylsma, the Penguins boast a 114-56-19 regular season record, making him the thirdwinningest coach in team history. He is also the fifth-fastest head coach in NHL history to hit the 100-win mark (163 games). Bylsma, who signed a three-year contract extension through the 2013-14 season, won the 2011 Jack Adams Award after a masterful coaching performance last year, steering the injury-depleted Penguins to a 49-25-8 record for 106 points (the 49 wins and 106 points both rank second in franchise history) and tied Philadelphia in points for the Atlantic Division title. The Penguins were in contention for the conference and division titles heading into the final weekend of the regular season despite the fact that the team suffered 350 man-games lost — including 119 games to the team’s three best players: Sidney Crosby (41 games); Evgeni Malkin (39); and Jordan Staal (39). Bylsma also directed the Penguins to a 12-game winning streak, tying for second-best in franchise history, and a 15-game unbeaten streak. Pittsburgh posted a 24-11-6 road record for 54 points. The team’s 54 road points are a new franchise record, while its 24 road wins tie for the team record (1992-93). In 2009-10 Bylsma completed his first full NHL season behind the bench for Pittsburgh, leading the club to a 47-28-7 record for 101 points and finishing only two points behind New Jersey for the Atlantic Division title. Under Bylsma’s leadership the Penguins set many milestones during the season, including tying a team record with seven straight road victories, becoming the second-fastest team in franchise history to 40 wins (66 games) continued on page 30

and totaling the fourth-most wins (tied) in a season (47). Bylsma began the 2008-09 season with the first head coaching assignment of his career — with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League. He ended it by hoisting the Stanley Cup. In between, Bylsma authored one of the most spectacular coaching stories in the history of professional hockey. The Grand Haven, Mich. native was promoted to Pittsburgh on Feb. 15, 2009, and took over a club that was 10th overall in the Eastern Conference standings and facing questions as to whether a playoff berth was even a practical option. But he accepted the challenge with his trademark optimism, passion and raw determination. Unleashing a swift, skilled team that was built to go on the attack, imploring his players to “play on their toes, not on their heels,” Bylsma led the Penguins to an 18-3-4 record in 25 games, rising from 10th place to fourth in the conference and garnering not only a playoff spot, but homeice advantage in the first round. In the playoffs, Bylsma’s team showed a steely resolve, clinching all four series on the road and twice rallying from 2-0 series deficits (against Washington in the second round and Detroit in the Stanley Cup Final). The Penguins beat the defending champion Red Wings four times in the last five games to claim the Cup, including a nerve-racking Game Seven at Detroit’s Joe Louis Arena and became the first team in professional sports since 1979 to win Game Seven of a championship round on the road. In the process Bylsma became the 14th rookie head coach, and just the fourth in the past 50 years, to capture the Stanley Cup. Of those 14, only Montreal’s Al MacNeil (1970-71) took over mid-season. Bylsma played nine NHL seasons as a right winger with Los Angeles and Anaheim from 1995-2004. He played 429 NHL regular season games, recording 19 goals and 62 points, and also played in the 2003 Stanley Cup Final with Anaheim. He began his coaching career as an assistant with the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks of the AHL in 2004-05 and made his NHL coaching debut as an assistant with the New York Islanders in 2005-06. Bylsma was an assistant coach at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton for two seasons from 2006-08 and was named head coach at the start of the 2008-09 season. He went 35-16-1-2 in 54 games with WB/S before being promoted to Pittsburgh. He played four seasons of college hockey at Bowling Green. Dan and his wife, Mary Beth, have one son, Bryan, and reside in the North Hills.

TONY
GRANATO ASSISTANT COACH
Tony Granato is in his third season on the Penguins’ coaching staff. Granato, among his many responsibilities, works with the Penguins’ forwards and penalty killing units. He oversaw the NHL’s No. 1-ranked penalty killing group with an 86.1-percent success rate in 2010-11. Prior to joining the Penguins, Granato spent six seasons behind the bench for the Colorado Avalanche and served two stints as Avalanche head coach from 2002-04 and 2008-09. Granato compiled a 104-78-17-16 record and led Colorado to a Northwest Division title in 2003. Granato, 46, joined the Avalanche organization in June, 2002, as an assistant coach. He was elevated to head coach on Dec. 18, 2002 and led the club to a 32-11-4-4 mark en route to its ninth consecutive division title. The following season Granato steered the Avalanche to a 40-22-13-7 finish and an appearance in the Western Conference semifinals. The Downers Grove, Illinois native served as an assistant coach for the Avalanche from 2005-08. Granato was promoted to his second tenure as the club’s head coach in 2008-09 and oversaw the development of a young Colorado team. Granato played 13 seasons in the NHL with the NY Rangers (1988-90), Los Angeles (1990-96) and San Jose (1996-2001). In 1997, he played in the NHL All-Star Game and was the recipient of the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy for overcoming a near career-ending brain injury. In 773 career games, the feisty forward posted 248 goals, 492 points and 1,425 penalty minutes. He tallied 16 goals, 43 points and 141 penalty minutes in 79 career postseason games and helped lead Los Angeles to a Stanley Cup Final berth in 1993. Granato played four years at the University of Wisconsin and was inducted into the Badgers’ Hall of Fame in 2000. Granato also played for the U.S. National team in 1987-88 and represented his country in the 1988 Olympic Games in Calgary. Tony and his wife, Linda, are the parents of four children and reside in the South Hills.

TODD
REIRDEN ASSISTANT COACH
Todd Reirden is in his second season as an assistant coach with the Penguins, joining Pittsburgh’s coaching staff on July 31, 2010 after coaching with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins the previous two seasons. Reirden, an NHL blueliner for parts of five seasons, works closely with the team’s defensemen. Under his guidance the Penguins defense ranked sixth (tied) in the NHL in 2010-11 in goals-against average (2.39) and surrendered only 196 goals (a 39-goal improvement from 2009-10). Reirden, 39, completed his first full season as WB/S head coach in 2009-10, leading a young and inexperienced team to an impressive 41-34-2-3 record, finishing third in the East Division, and earning a berth in the Calder Cup playoffs. Reirden joined the Penguins organization August 18, 2008 as an assistant coach in WB/S. A few months later he was promoted to interim head coach following Dan Bylsma’s promotion to Pittsburgh in February 2009. Reirden guided WB/S to a 14-9-3 mark in the final 26 games, and advanced to the second round of the AHL playoffs. Reirden then joined Pittsburgh’s extended playoff coaching staff and helped the team win the Stanley Cup championship in 2009. Prior to joining the Penguins organization, Reirden spent one season as an assistant coach with the Bowling Green Falcons (CCHA) — his alma mater. He was a teammate of Bylsma’s during the 1990-91 and 1991-92 seasons at Bowling Green. Selected by New Jersey in the 12th round (242nd overall) of the 1990 NHL Draft, Reirden played professionally for 13 seasons, retiring after the 2006-07 campaign with Graz EC of the Austrian Hockey League. He appeared in 183 NHL games with Edmonton, St. Louis, Atlanta and Phoenix, recording 46 points (11G-35A) and 181 penalty minutes. Todd and his wife, Shelby, have one son.

MIKE LANGE PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK PLAY-BY-PLAY ANNOUNCER
One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange is calling games in his 36th season with the Penguins, handling radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM “The X”. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.
PHIL BOURQUE PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK COLOR ANALYST
Two-time Stanley Cup Champion Phil Bourque is in his eighth season on the Penguins broadcast team, serving as color commentator alongside Mike Lange. A gritty winger/defenseman, Bourque was signed by Pittsburgh as a free agent in 1982, and went on to record 164 points (75G-89A) in 344 regular-season games with the Penguins between 1983 and 1992. For his career he totaled 199 points (88G-111A) in 477 games with the Penguins, New York Rangers and Ottawa. Since retiring from professional hockey in 2000, Bourque has co-hosted Penguins pre- and post-game shows on the Penguins Radio Network and worked as a contributor for ROOT Sports’ coverage of Penguins hockey.

BOB GROVE STUDIO HOST — PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK
After a 17-year career as the Penguins beat writer for the Washington Observer-Reporter, Bob Grove joined the team’s radio broadcasts in 1998 as a frequent studio host/co-host and is now in his seventh season as full-time host of the pre- and post-game broadcasts and intermissions on the Penguins Hockey Network. Grove wrote Pittsburgh Penguins: The Official History of the First 30 Years in 1997 and has contributed game notes to GOAL Magazine inserts or IceTime programs for every Pittsburgh home game since 1986. He was also a contributor to the second edition of Total Hockey and to The Game I’ll Never Forget. He is a senior writer covering hockey for the Pittsburgh Sports Report and also hosts “Bob Grove’s Hot Stove” on Penguins Radio 24/7.
STEVE MEARS PENGUINS RADIO 24/7 HOST/PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK
Steve Mears is in his third season as a member of the Penguins Radio Network team. In addition to his work on the Penguins’ radio and TV game broadcasts, he serves as the lead host of “Penguins Live” on Penguins Radio 24/7 and is also a contributor to PensTV at pittsburghpenguins.com. Mears came to the Penguins in September of 2009 after spending three seasons as the radio play-by-play voice of the New York Islanders. Prior to his time in New York, he spent four seasons as the director of media relations and broadcasting for the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs of the Central Hockey League. In 2005, he was named “CHL Broadcaster of the Year.” In addition to his radio work, he has also done various game broadcasts for Leafs TV and MSG television networks. A graduate of Franklin Regional High School, Mears grew up in Murrysville, PA and earned a degree in broadcasting from Bowling Green State University in 2002 while serving as the play-by-play voice of the BGSU Falcons. He currently resides in Pittsburgh.

PENGUINS WIVES ASSOCIATION PROVIDES HUGE ASSIST The better halves of the Pittsburgh Penguins team are as productive off the ice as their husbands and boyfriends are on the ice. The Penguins Wives Association has been a mainstay in helping the team with The Penguins Wives Association bracelet sale raised $20,000 pre-game collections, for the families of the Lokomotiv Yaroslavl team . fundraising projects, events for local charities, and donations of their time and resources. The ladies began the season by selling remembrance bracelets to raise support and funds for the Love for Lokomotiv initiative after the hockey world was rocked by a tragedy on September 7, 2011 when a plane in Russia crashed. The passengers were the coaches and players of the KHL’s Lokomotiv Yaroslavl team; the horrific event claimed the lives of 44 people and forever changed the lives of their families and friends. Immediately, the women leapt into action and began contacting one another league-wide to organize a fundraising project that would raise money and support for the families affected by this tragedy. On October 13, 2011, the ladies sold Love for Lokomotiv remembrance bracelets before and during the team’s game at CONSOL Energy Center against the Washington Capitals. The bracelet sale raised $20,000 for the families of the Lokomotiv Yaroslavl team. In late October, the Penguins Wives Association helped bring the Halloween spirit to The Children’s Home of Pittsburgh & Lemieux Family Center. The Penguins Wives Association made an autumn visit to The Children’s Home of Six ladies hosted a pumpkin Pittsburgh & Lemieux Family Center .

decorating project for a special group of children enduring difficult health challenges. The women purchased 30 miniature pumpkins and an assortment of fun items for the children to turn their pumpkins into works of art. Their visit gave many children an opportunity to enjoy the autumn afternoon and just have fun for a few hours. It truly was the highlight of the Halloween season for these children and their giant smiles reflected just that. The ladies embraced their love of our four-legged friends by helping with the team’s 2012 Penguins & Paws Charity Pet Calendar. Many of the women helped to coordinate photo shoots with their family pet and spouse or boyfriend at their homes or donated their personal photographs. The ladies also helped sell the charity project by encouraging their own families and friends to purchase a calendar or two… or three! Without their support and passion for this cause, the Penguins & Paws Charity Pet Calendar would not have been nearly as successful. With their assistance, the Penguins raised more than $68,000 for the Animal Rescue League Shelter and Wildlife Center. Before the 2011 holiday season, the Penguins Wives Association devised a special project for charity. The ladies created baskets which represented each player or coach, then auctioned the baskets online to raise funds for the ALS Association. Each basket was unique as it showcased their husband or boyfriend’s favorite things, hobbies, interests or hometown. Their online auction raised $11,232 for the benefit of the ALS Association, Western Pennsylvania Chapter. Pens & Pins raised more than $58,000 to help make the dreams of local Make-A-Wish children come true .
The sound of bowling pins falling heralds the team’s annual Pens & Pins Charity Bowling Tournament. Pens & Pins was created by the Penguins Wives Association to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Greater PA and Southern WV. Penguins players and coaches acted as celebrity captains for their bowling group while the ladies hosted a bake sale, silent auction, and held an online auction of autographed bowling pins. The event raised more than $58,000 to help make the dreams of local Make-A-Wish children come true. When the team traded their hockey equipment for tuxedos at the 2012 Skates & Plates Charity Gala presented by Trib Total Media, their better halves provided the assist. The ladies contributed to the event’s live auction through donations of wine bottles signed by their significant others. The Penguins Ultimate Wine Package and other must-have items helped the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation raise more than $270,000 to benefit the Mario Lemieux Foundation and Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s Western Pennsylvania Chapter. Each season the Pittsburgh Penguins host a number of collections pre-game for the benefit of local charities and encourage fans to donate. The team collects toys for the United States Marine Corps’ Toys for Tots program, pet toys and supplies for the Animal Rescue League Shelter and Wildlife Center, and children’s books for the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh. as they accept donations from fans. Many of the ladies also make personal donations and show that this truly is a team effort. During the 2011-12 season, the Penguins were able to help brighten the holiday season for disadvantaged children with more than 1,765 toys and $5,550 donated by fans during two Toy Collections. The Animal Rescue League Shelter and Wildlife Center was given a boost in their efforts to help homeless pets and rehabilitate wildlife with more than 1,140 pet toys/supplies and $2,870 donated during the team’s Pet Supply Collection. The Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh was able to expand their summer reading programs for children and young adults at local library branches after Penguins fans donated more than 1,975 books and $1,049. Each year, the Penguins’ team strives to fulfill their role in the community as a good neighbor. It is a point of pride for every facet of the organization and we especially thank the Penguins Wives Association for their commitment to serving others this season.

RULES OF THE GAME PRESENTED BY
BOARDING NEW NHL RULE CHANGE FOR 2011.12 BOARDING
To check or push a defenseless opponent in such a manner that causes the opponent to hit or impact into the boards dangerously or violently.
-
The player applying the check needs to ensure his opponent is not in a defenseless position and if so, must avoid contact.
-
The player with the puck needs to avoid placing himself in a dangerous and defenseless position.
-
Any unnecessary contact with a player playing the puck on an obvious “icing” or “off-sides” play that does not impact boards should be treated as “charging.”
DELAY OF GAME A player may be penalized when, in the opinion of the Referee, is delaying the game in any matter. (Normally six conditions) 1.) Player or goaltender intentionally shoots or throws the puck out
of the playing area. 2.) A defensive player or goaltender in the defensive zone shoots
the puck directly (without being deflected) over the glass. 3.) A player or goaltender intentionally knocks the net’s goalpost off
its moorings, which stops the play. 4.) The goaltender plays the puck out of the trapezoid behind the net. 5.) The goaltender freezes the puck rather than passing it to a
teammate when no player on the opposing team is within sufficient distance to apply offensive pressure. 6.) Any skater other than the goaltender who uses their hands to
make the puck unplayable.

INTERFERENCE INTERFERENCE
BODY POSITION: Body position will be determined as the player skating in front of or beside his opponent, traveling in the same direction. - A player who is behind an opponent, who does not have the puck, may not use his stick, body or free hand in order to restrain his opponent. POSSESSION OF THE PUCK: The last player to touch the puck, other than the goaltenders, will be considered the player in possession. RESTRAIN: The actions of a player or goaltender who does not have body position, but instead uses illegal means to impede an opponent who is not in possession of the puck. PICK: The action of a player or goaltender who checks an opponent who is not in possession of the puck and is unaware of the impending check/hit. FREE HAND: When a free hand is used to hold, pull, tug, grab or physically restrain an opponent from moving freely, this must be penalized as holding. STICK: A player who does not have body position on his opponent, who used his stick to impede or prevent his opponent from moving freely on the ice shall be assessed a hooking penalty.
OFF-SIDES Players of the attacking team must not precede the puck into the attacking zone. (Two determining factors) 1.) One of a player’s skates is not in contact with or behind the blue
line of the attacking zone before the puck enters that zone. 2.) The puck must completely cross the edge of the blue line nearest
the attacking zone to be considered inside the attacking zone.
The act of using the stick in a manner that enables a player to restrain an opponent.
-
When a player is checking another in such a way that there is only stick-to-stick contact, such action is not to be penalized as hooking.

Player who skates or jumps into or charges an opponent in any matter.
-
A “charge” may be the result of a check into the boards, into the goal frame or in open ice. A goaltender is not “fair game” just because he is outside the goal crease area.
CROSS CHECKING The action of using the shaft of the stick between the two hands to forcefully check an opponent.
FACEOFFS The action of the Referee or Linesman in dropping the puck between the sticks of two opposing players to start or resume play.
MY
The Referee drops the puck at the start of the period or after a goal (center circle).
-
The Linesman drop for all other circles. A goaltender may not participate in a faceoff.
RULES OF THE FACE-OFF
-
All players must be either lateral or behind the player taking the faceoff.
-
There are nine (9) faceoff spots. (two (2) in each attacking zone; two (2) pair at each end of the neutral zone; one (1) in the center)
-
An official may remove a player taking the faceoff if that player or any teammate tries to gain an unfair advantage. • Moving the stick before the puck is dropped. • Not placing the stick down on the ice properly when asked. • Not placing the body square to the faceoff spot. • Another teammate comes into the faceoff circle.
Visiting team is required to place his stick down on the ice first. continued on page 79

2012
PLAYOFF FORMAT The National Hockey League’s 30 clubs are aligned into two conferences, each consisting of three divisions (Eastern Conference: Atlantic, Northeast, Southeast; Western Conference: Central, Northwest, Pacific). The number of teams qualifying for the 2012 Stanley Cup Playoffs remains at 16. First-round playoff berths will be awarded to the first-place team in each division, as well as to the next five best teams (based on regularseason point totals in each conference). The three division winners in each conference will be seeded first through third (in order of points) and the next five best teams (in order of points) will be seeded fourth through eighth. In each conference, the team seeded #1 will play the team seeded #8; #2 vs. #7; #3 vs. #6 and #4 vs. #5 in the Conference Quarterfinal round. Home-ice in the Conference Quarterfinals is granted to those teams seeded first through fourth in each conference. In the Conference Semifinals and Conference Finals, teams will be reseeded according to the same criteria as the Conference Quarterfinals (division leaders will be seeded first and granted home-ice advantage while the remaining teams will be seeded in order of regular-season points). Home-ice advantage in the Stanley Cup Final will be determined by points. All series remain best-of-seven. TIE-BREAKING PROCEDURE: In the event two or more clubs are tied in points at the conclusion of the regular season, the standing of the clubs in each conference will be determined in the following order: 1. The greater number of games won in regulation and overtime. 2. The greater number of points earned in games between the tied clubs. If two clubs are tied, and have not played an equal number of home games against each other, points earned in the first game played in the city that had the extra game shall not be included. If more than two clubs are tied, the higher percentage of available points earned in games among those clubs (and not including any “odd” games) shall be used to determine the standing. 3. The greater differential between goals for and against for the entire regular season. continued on page 84
83
continued from page 83
CONFERENCE QUARTERFINALS (SERIES A – H) The six regular-season division champions will be ranked in the first three positions in their respective conferences, the clubs with the greatest number of points being ranked first in their respective conferences. The remaining five playoff clubs in each conference will be ranked based on regular-season points. Following are the matchups based on the rankings. CONFERENCE SEMIFINALS (SERIES I – L) If one division winner is eliminated in the Conference Quarterfinals: The remaining division winners would be seeded first and second, followed by the two remaining clubs in order of regular-season points. The #1 seed would face the club with the fewest regular-season points, while the other two clubs would meet. If two division winners are eliminated in the Conference Quarterfinals: The remaining division winner would be seeded first, followed by the three remaining clubs in order of regular-season points. The #1 seed would face the club with the fewest regular-season points, while the other two clubs would meet. If all three division winners are eliminated in the Conference Quarterfinals: The remaining clubs would be ranked in order of regular-season points. The remaining team with the most regular-season points would be seeded first, followed by the three remaining teams. The #1 seed would face the #4 seed, while the #2 and #3 seeds would meet. If a division winner meets a non-division winner that compiled more regular season points: The division winner would receive home-ice advantage. CONFERENCE FINALS (SERIES M AND N) The same criteria used in the selection of order for the Conference Quarterfinals (Advancing division winners, followed by remaining clubs based on regular-season points) again will be in effect. If a division winner meets a non-division winner that compiled more regular-season points: The division winner would receive home-ice advantage. If Conference Semifinal series end early: Start dates for the Conference Finals may be moved up depending on a number of factors, including building availability and travel schedules. STANLEY CUP FINAL (SERIES O) The Eastern Conference and Western Conference champions will meet in the Stanley Cup Final series. Home-ice will be determined by the greater number of regular-season points, subject to the tie-breaking procedures outlined previously. Games will be played on a 2-2-1-1-1 basis.

2011.12
SEASON RECAP The Pittsburgh Penguins completed one of the best regular seasons in franchise history, going 51-25-6 to finish with 108 points — the second-highest point total in the Eastern Conference and the third/fourth-most points in the entire NHL. Pittsburgh’s 51 victories and 108 points both ranked second in franchise history (56 wins and 119 points in 1992-93). The Penguins came in second place in the Atlantic Division, just one point behind the division-champion New York Rangers, earning them their sixth-consecutive postseason appearance. Pittsburgh earned the No. 4 seed in the Eastern Conference, giving the Penguins home-ice advantage for their opening-round matchup against the cross-state rival Philadelphia Flyers.
The Pittsburgh Penguins offer a salute to their fans at the conclusion of the final regular season home game on April 7.
HIGHEST-SCORING TEAM IN THE NHL Pittsburgh finished the regular season with an NHL-best 273 goals this season — an average of 3.33 goals per game. This marks the first time the Penguins led the league in goals since doing so in back-toback seasons in 1995-96 and 1996-97. The Penguins were especially potent during the final 22 games of the regular season when they scored 94 goals for an average of continued on page 89

4.27 per contest. They tallied four or more goals 15 times during that stretch and five-plus goals on 11 occasions. Five Penguins — Evgeni Malkin (50 goals), James Neal (40), Chris Kunitz (25), Jordan Staal (25), and Pascal Dupuis (25) — reached the 20-goal mark.
James Neal and Chris Kunitz are among the five Penguins players to surpass the 20-goal mark during the 2011-12 campaign.
TURNING POINT An 82-game NHL schedule is full of twists and turns, ups and downs. Pittsburgh’s season was no different. On the morning of Jan. 13, the Penguins had lost a season-high six straight games and were sitting on the outside of the Eastern Conference playoff picture with a 21-17-4 record. That night they put an emphatic end to that streak by earning a 4-1 win against the Florida Panthers at the BankAtlantic Center. That began an eight-game winning streak through Jan. 31 that put the Penguins back firmly in control of their sixth-straight playoff appearance. In the final 40 games of the regular season beginning on Jan. 13, the Penguins posted the NHL’s best record (30-8-2; .775 pct.). FRANCHISE GOALTENDER Goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury quietly posted a career year between the pipes for the Penguins, building off the breakout regularseason he had in 2010-11. Fleury ranked second in the NHL with a continued on page 91

career-high 42 victories — the second-highest single-season total in franchise history (Tom Barrasso; 43 wins; 1992-93). From Jan. 13 through the end of the season, Fleury went 23-5-2 over his final 31 starts. The co-Dapper Dan Award winner along with head coach Dan Bylsma, Fleury equaled the all-time franchise win mark with 226 following a 5-2 defeat of the New York Rangers on April 5. Earlier in the season, Fleury recorded his 22nd career shutout against the NY Rangers on Feb. 21 — equaling Barrasso’s franchise record.
The 2011-12 campaign was the most successful for veteran forward Pascal Dupuis.
SUPER DUPER STREAK Pascal Dupuis’ 11th NHL season turned out to be his best yet. The versatile forward established career highs for himself across the board with 25 goals, 34 assists, 59 points, eight game-winning goals and 214 shots while appearing in all 82 games. However, none of those numbers represent his most impressive statistic of the season — his NHL-season-high 17-game point streak from March 7-April 7. Dupuis’ run was the NHL’s longest point streak since his linemate, Sidney Crosby, posted a 25-game point streak from Nov. 5-Dec. 28, 2010. During his streak, Dupuis amassed 22 points (10G-12A).

2012 FROZEN FOUR TAMPA, Fla. — For this Cinderella, midnight came a couple of hours early and it arrived in the form of a carriageturned-pumpkin that wound up smashed before the fairy The Men’s NCAA Hockey Champion Boston College Eagles. tale ride could be completed. For this David, Goliath was a little too skilled, a little too precise, a little too tenacious and a little too strong to outlast. The NCAA Frozen Four guarantees no such one-shining-moment type storylines. But one way or another, a championship is awarded and a sport is celebrated. And most years that’s more than enough. That explained the crowd at the Tampa Bay Times Forum rising to its feet and remaining upright and applauding as the Boston College Eagles celebrated the 2012-13 national championship. The Eagles, it could have been argued pre-tournament, were supposed to win this thing. They carried an 18-game winning streak into the championship game on April 7, and their opponent was Frozen Four first-timer Ferris State. Their grinding, 4-1 triumph, thus, came as no surprise. But none of that made what was taking place any less special as the players posed for the traditional group photo with the NCAA Championship Trophy and otherwise celebrated Boston College’s fifth national title all-time and its third since 2008. And while that was happening, Pittsburgh was suddenly on the clock. The 2012-13 event is coming to the CONSOL Energy Center, where it will be hosted by Robert Morris University and staged next April 11-13. And there’s a lot to do between now and then. “We still have a year to go,” said RMU Senior Associate Athletic Director Marty Galosi, chairman of the Pittsburgh Frozen Four Organizing Committee. “We’re not ready yet but we will be.” continued on page 97

There’s more than just the playing of three hockey games — the two national semifinals on Thursday and the championship match on Saturday — to deal with logistically. The Frozen Four experience also includes Wednesday and Two local players - Patrick Wey and Parker Milner are national champions. Friday team practices, a reception for the teams on Wednesday night, the Hobey Baker Award Ceremony on the Friday night between the semifinals and the final, the red carpet arrival of the teams to the arena prior to the games and “Frozen Fest,” which usually includes music and festivities and interactive experiences for the fans. The RMU representatives are convinced all of the work that has gone into planning all of that and will continue to go into the planning of all of that will be well worth the effort. Robert Morris is the official host and is being supported toward that end by the CONSOL Energy Center, the Pittsburgh Penguins and visit Pittsburgh. “It raises our stature,” Galosi said. “People know the Frozen Four is going to be here next year and they know about Robert Morris, and that’s exciting. “It’s exciting for the city, too. We’ve had NCAA tournaments before but we’ve never crowned a national champion in a sport of this magnitude and that’s really exciting.” Added Colonials head coach Derek Schooley: “The exposure definitely helps Robert Morris hockey, but it also helps Robert Morris University. “The city of Pittsburgh will be an excellent host. This event will bring people from all over North America to see our wonderful city and experience a great weekend of hockey.” Those that ventured to the home of the Tampa Bay Lightning saw

a Frozen Four that featured matchups between a couple of college hockey bluebloods (Boston College and Minnesota) and a couple of relative underdogs (Union College, like Ferris State, was making its first Frozen Four appearance). The final became a matchup that positioned a BC team with nine NHL draftees on its roster against a Ferris State squad that had none. Outside the arena just about every NCAA jersey was visible including several that spoke to college hockey’s history and tradition (a North Dakota jersey with “Toews 19” on the back managed that as well as any). Inside the blasting of fight songs and the presence of skating cheerleaders and skating mascots exemplified college hockey’s color and pageantry. The president of Ferris State helped contribute to that cause by playing the clarinet with his institution’s pep band. It all made for a compelling show, one that no doubt had many of those on hand already counting down the days to the 2012-13 Frozen Four at CONSOL Energy Center. BC goaltender Parker Milner could be forgiven if he was one of those. This season’s Most Outstanding Player at the Frozen Four will be a senior next season and might have an opportunity to defend the titles he and his teammates captured in his hometown of Pittsburgh. That might qualify as a one-shining-moment storyline after all. But those aren’t a prerequisite when college hockey gets together to celebrate.
Pittsburgh native Parker Milner back-stopped the Eagles to their fifth national title.

.
Ask a grieving child how they’re feeling and you may get a lot of answers. Or none at all. For many, finding the words to express their feelings can be difficult. But while finding the right words may not be easy, finding the right place to turn to for help can be. At the Caring Place, we’re here when grieving children need someone to listen, to talk, or to just sit and be. LITTLE PENGUINS LEARN TO PLAY IN LARGE NUMBERS Sidney Crosby and his parents wanted to help teach local children to learn the game of hockey – and to help their parents by significantly reducing the start-up costs. The result is the Little Penguins Learn to Play Hockey Program, now in its fourth year. This one-of-a-kind program, open to kids aged 5-7, provides FREE head-to-toe hockey equipment, including skates, and works with local rinks to provide ice time and instruction. Thanks to the combined efforts of Sidney and his family, the Pittsburgh Penguins, Reebok and Dick’s Sporting Goods, each child who registers receives a FREE set of Reebok SC87 Crosby-endorsed equipment — including skates, stick, helmet, gloves, pants, shoulder pads, shin pads, elbow pads and an equipment bag, as well as an official Little Penguins jersey and Little Penguins helmet stickers. This year’s program supplied 1,000 sets of equipment to kids from around the region.

Warning: the 2012 chevy Sonic is unlike any car you’ve ever experienced. Seriously. Side effects include: spontaneous road trips, uncontrollable pleasure cruises and impromptu spins around the block. however, this is to be expected considering that Sonic packs an available 1.4-liter turbo engine, offering an ePa-estimated 40 MPg highway and an impressive 0-60 in 8.2 seconds on the test track.

Overall, in four years, more than 3,200 kids have received the free equipment and learn-to-play instruction. The success of the program is evident in the fact that it continues to grow — now encompassing 26 Little Penguins programs at 23 local ice rinks, including four all-girls sessions. Demand for slots is at an all-time high, and a maximum of 1,000 registrations were accepted this year. Online registration opened on November 1 and within 10 minutes several rinks were sold out. Within 25 minutes, all participating rinks within 30 minutes of Pittsburgh were sold out, and soon the more distant regional rinks were filled to capacity. “We were both excited and amazed by the reaction to the Little Penguins program in previous seasons, and we’re happy to be able to offer the program again for another year,” Crosby said. “The goal is to continue to create opportunities for more kids in the Pittsburgh area to take up hockey. With the Little Penguins program, they can receive head-to-toe hockey equipment and learn the game in a fun and organized way.” “It’s a tribute to Sid and his family that they want to reach out and create this incredible opportunity for children in the Pittsburgh area,” said Penguins CEO and president David Morehouse. “One of their goals was to help parents by providing free head-totoe hockey equipment to properly equip their children. The Penguins are honored to join Reebok and Dick’s Sporting Goods in supporting Sid and this great program.” For additional information on this special program, please visit pittsburghpenguins.com and select Amateur Hockey under the Community tab.

ICEBURGH A delight for children of all ages, Iceburgh — the official mascot of the Pittsburgh Penguins not only provides fans with exciting game entertainment but this large, energetic bird can also be seen at a multitude of community events and elementary schools throughout the greater Pittsburgh area. Iceburgh arrived on the scene in 1992 and is a staple at all team events. During Penguins’ home games, fans most definitely notice the antics of Iceburgh leading sections of fans in cheers, greeting young children on the concourse or displaying his athleticism on-ice between periods. In 1995, Iceburgh made his Hollywood debut, starring alongside Jean Claude Van Damme in the motion picture “Sudden Death.” He has gained both national and international exposure through film, TV and a variety of personal appearances. Iceburgh wasted no time getting acquainted with his new home at CONSOL Energy Center in September of 2010. You can find Iceburgh sliding down stair banisters, dancing in the stands and tossing t-shirts to fans. Iceburgh has performed in Russia and Japan, was featured in the opening of ESPN’s SportsCenter and recently performed in front of a record crowd of over 68,000 at Heinz Field for the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic. He is also regularly featured on in-game videos and has appeared in advertisements and television promos on ROOT Sports. In addition to his annual trek to the NHL All-Star Game, Iceburgh makes annual appearances at the Mascot Olympics held in Orlando, FL. If you would like to request an Iceburgh appearance at your next event, please complete the online form by visiting the community section of pittsburghpenguins.com.

YOUTH HOCKEY UPDATE A PITTSBURGH MIGHTY PENGUIN WINS GOLD AND WORLD TITLE By Kylie Penticost
Sled hockey has rapidly grown in popularity throughout the years. Not only has the participation increased, the sport has become a huge spectator event. Countries from all around the world, including the United States, Canada, and Germany, have established sled hockey teams, which has earned the sport a spot in the Winter Paralympics. One Pittsburgh resident took his sled hockey talent to Norway for the 2012 International Paralympic Committee Sledge Hockey World Championship. Daniel McCoy, a forward, and the rest of the U.S. National Sled Hockey Team, defeated Team Korea in regulation time and captured a gold medal to win a world title. With this year’s win, Team USA has become the first team to ever win back-to-back world titles. For Daniel, 2012 has lead to a whirlwind of opportunities. This 18-year-old Fox Chapel high school senior not only has had the privilege of being a Team USA gold medalist, but has also been accepted to do his undergraduate studies at the University of Pittsburgh this fall.

A SEASON OF GIVING Another Pittsburgh Penguins season has been a great success for local charities and the credit is rightfully due to our fans. Penguins fans have always been on hand to provide a valueable assist. LOVE FOR LOKOMOTIV: The 2011-12 season started with an unimaginable tragedy when a plane carrying the KHL’s Lokomotiv Yaroslavl team crashed in Russia. In October, the Pittsburgh Penguins hosted a number of fundraising efforts for Love for Lokomotiv — a charity raffle, online auction by the Penguins and Capitals of autographed jerseys with commemorative Lokomotiv patches and the sale of remembrance bracelets by the players’ wives and girlfriends. These projects raised more than $57,000 to help the families affected by the terrible event. PENGUINS & PAWS CHARITY PET CALENDAR: The Penguins and Animal Rescue League Shelter & Wildlife Center joined forces to create a charity calendar. Proceeds from this endeavor helped the Animal Rescue League find loving homes for shelter animals and rehabilitate wildlife. The calendar was a resounding success with fans throughout North America as it raised more than $68,000 for the Animal Rescue League Shelter & Wildlife Center. FOOD DRIVE: The Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank received a boost in November when Penguins fans donated 2,709 pounds of food and $3,000 at the Score Against Hunger Food Drive sponsored by CONSOL Energy. The donations from this food drive helped the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank make Thanksgiving much brighter for those in need within our community. TOY DRIVES: The team’s annual toy drives for the United States Marine Corps’ Toys for Tots program took place at consecutive home games in December. Penguins fans played Santa by donating a total of 1,767 toys and $5,557 for the Marines to purchase additional toys. Fans’ donations helped to spread a great deal of holiday cheer to disadvantaged local children. PET SUPPLY COLLECTION: In January, the Penguins and Walgreens teamed up to help our four-legged friends with a Pet Supply Collection sponsored by Walgreens for the Animal Rescue League Shelter & Wildlife Center. Our fans embraced this cause with 1,141 items and $2,872 for the Animal Rescue League. CHILDREN’S BOOK COLLECTION: The Penguins and FirstEnergy Solutions partnered in March to increase literacy and foster a love of reading in young people with a Children’s Book Collection. Fans donated 1,979 and $1,049 for Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh branches to utilize this summer in reading programs. Clearly, this has been a season of giving for the Penguins organization, sponsors and fans. We would like thank each fan and partner for their generosity in making our charitable endeavors so successful; each donation, positive word and act to help make our community better illustrates exactly why Pittsburgh Penguins fans truly are the best!

SCOUTING THE FLYERS ILYA BRYZGALOV: Bryzgalov does have a Stanley Cup ring in his possession that he won back in 2007 with Anaheim. But Bryzgalov served as the backup to Jean-Sebastien Giguere during that run; as a starter, he has yet to make it past the first round of the playoffs. He’ll be looking to bury a disappointing opening-round sweep last season with Phoenix when he goes to battle this year as a member of the Flyers. He certainly buried his rocky start in the city of Brotherly Love over the last few weeks of the regular season, as Bryzgalov finished on an 11-3-1 run. Though he was derailed for three games by a foot injury, the big netminder is healthy again and seems locked in, focused and ready to go.

KIMMO TIMONEN: At 37-years-old and 5-foot-10, 194 pounds, Timonen isn’t the youngest or biggest player in this league. But this veteran defender’s value to this Flyers squad cannot be understated. Timonen, who is arguably the team’s most offensive defenseman, is especially important when it comes to special teams as he quarterbacks Philly’s top power-play unit (and has chipped in big goals on the man-advantage with his accurate shot) and averages 3:28 shorthanded minutes per game.

SCOTT HARTNEL: Scott Hartnell has carved an identity as one of the National Hockey League’s most abrasive players. But Hartnell hasn’t just talked the talk this season; he’s walked the walk, as well. The veteran winger, who turns 30 this month, experienced a career renaissance on a line with Claude Giroux and Jaromir Jagr — finishing the regular season among the league leaders in goals (37) and power-play tallies (16). Hartnell recorded those numbers while also posting 100-plus penalty minutes for the fifth straight season.

JAROMIR JAGR: This will be Jagr’s first NHL postseason experience since 2008, when he was a member of the New York Rangers. Jagr, who finished the year as the Flyers’ third-leading scorer with 54 points (19G-35A), enters the postseason leading all active players in career playoff goals (77). The 40-year-old winger has embraced a veteran leadership role in his first year with the Flyers, mentoring and helping his teammates to the best of his ability, and continues to display the tireless work ethic he’s had throughout his career. Look for him to be a potential difference maker against his former team.

PENGUINS-FLYERS SERIES STORYLINES By: Michelle Crechiolo
Cross-state rivals Pittsburgh and Philadelphia will collide in the opening round of this year’s Stanley Cup Playoffs for the sixth edition of the Battle of Pennsylvania, which is sure to be a wild ride. Here are some of the main storylines to follow as the series unfolds.
HEATED RIVALRY
Games between the longtime rivals often see players drop the gloves.
It’s easy to describe the rivalry between the Penguins and the Flyers. “It’s two teams that hate each other,” defenseman Kris Letang said. There’s a special dislike between these two clubs situated on opposite ends of Pennsylvania that dates back to when both teams entered the NHL. And the playoffs are the ultimate stage for that animosity between the Penguins and the Flyers to collide. The postseason is intense enough, as the atmosphere goes to a whole new level when the desperation of both teams manifests itself. But a series between two such bitter adversaries is going to be over the top. The Penguins have laid the foundation for these next few weeks over the past seven-plus months. They have put in the effort, energy, sweat and exhaustion and experienced emotional highs and lows through countless meetings, scouting, workouts, training, practices and games to earn the right to battle for the Stanley Cup. They must win 16 games to earn hockey’s holy grail. And the first four must come against their most despised rival. Pittsburgh cannot be rattled by whatever their opponent does to try and get them off their game. Though it’s not easy to do against the Flyers, a tough, in-your-face team that thrives by creating scrums and altercations, the Penguins must keep their focus if they want possession of that coveted silver chalice. Emotional control will be Pittsburgh’s key to success. continued on page 158

OFFENSIVE FIREPOWER The NHL’s top-two offenses will collide in the opening round of the Stanley Cup playoffs. Pittsburgh closed the regular season at No. 1 with 269 total goals scored — an average of 3.32 per game. Philly finished right behind them at No. 2, scoring 258 total goals for an average of 3.18 per game. What’s so significant about that? When the Penguins have a healthy lineup, their offensive capabilities are astounding with superstars Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby, 40-goal scorer James Neal and 20-plus goal scorers Jordan Staal, Pascal Dupuis and Chris Kunitz. But while the Flyers may not have as many big names in their lineup, they do have the same offensive capabilities. Their versatility up top is tough to match, and they tend to attack in waves. They are led by Claude Giroux, who’s completed his evolution into an elite talent at the NHL level. He wrapped up the season with some of the best offensive numbers for a Flyers player in a dozen years with 93 points (28G-65A), which ranked third in the NHL. Linemate Scott Hartnell had a career year for Philly with 37 goals and 67 points. A few other players have stepped up and posted career years, like Wayne Simmonds (28 goals) and former Penguin Max Talbot (19 goals). The Flyers have also gotten contributions from rookies Matt Read (24 goals), Sean Couturier (13 goals) and Brayden Schenn (12 goals).
SPECIAL TEAMS BATTLE A major key to which team wins the series will be who wins the special teams battle. The Flyers finished the regular season with 66 power-play goals, the most in the league. But they and the Penguins tied for the Eastern Conference’s best power play with identical 19.7-percent success rates. Philly’s power play can be incredibly potent. They run an umbrella formation quarterbacked by veteran defenseman Kimmo Timonen. Wayne Simmonds, Scott Hartnell, Jakub Voracek and Claude Pittsburgh’s special teams unit features the offensive skills of Malkin, Crosby, Neal and Kunitz, while Sullivan Giroux complete the first unit. and Letang make frequent power-play appearances. continued on page 161

Their second unit has Matt Carle on the point, Jaromir Jagr and Matt Read around the halfwalls and Danny Briere and Brayden Schenn around the front of the net. But not only did Pittsburgh’s power play tie for fifth in the league, but the Penguins finished the season with the league’s fourth-ranked penalty kill — establishing a franchise record for the highest singleseason success rate on the penalty kill (87.8). While Steve Sullivan and Kris Letang have alternated on the first power-play unit, the other four players have remained the same: Chris Kunitz and James Neal down low, with Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin around the walls. Neal’s 18 power-play goals led the NHL, while Malkin ranked second in the league with 34 power-play points. Two elite goaltenders will be going head-to-head in this first-round series. It’s Marc-Andre Fleury vs. Ilya Bryzgalov, and both netminders could be the key component to whether or not their team advances to the next round. Fleury quietly posted Marc-Andre Fleury Ilya Bryzgalov a career year between the pipes, building off the breakout regular season he had in 2010-11. His momentum over the last couple of months of the regular season is certainly important, but it’s his playoff experience that the Penguins will draw upon to help them win this series. Fleury has dealt with virtually every playoff situation imaginable for a netminder at just 27-years-old. He is a confident, cheerful individual who has mastered the art of dealing with the emotional rollercoaster that is the playoffs. He’s not overly intense, but is always perfectly focused — and the Penguins will need him to be at his best if they want to advance to the next round. Bryzgalov is somewhat harder to read than his counterpart. Bryzgalov struggled throughout much of his first season in Philadelphia after spending the previous four campaigns with Phoenix, but over the last few weeks of the regular season he returned to top form. He is healthy again after missing three games with a broken foot and seems locked in, which will be something to watch throughout the first round.

PENGUINS PROFILE
PASCAL DUPUIS By: Mark Madden
NHL rules did what NHL teams couldn’t: Stopped winger Pascal Dupuis’ points streak. By NHL law, streaks do not carry over from season to season. So Dupuis’ campaign-ending points streak of 17 games is finished. It stands as the longest in the NHL this season. The only Penguins who have had longer streaks: Mario Lemieux and Sidney Crosby. “I don’t know what to say,” said Dupuis when told. Dupuis doesn’t need to say anything. The streak speaks for itself, and there was nothing random about it. The streak was the residue of Dupuis’ tireless work ethic and underrated skill. Dupuis, 33, had 10 goals and 12 assists during those 17 games. He had four multiple-point nights. Dupuis finished the year with 25 goals and 34 assists for 59 points, all career bests. He played all 82 games and was plus-18. He netted eight game-winning goals, another career high. Dupuis benefits, of course, by skating on a line with Sidney Crosby. But the streak began before Crosby returned from injury. “I bring speed. I bring tenacity. I create turnovers on the forecheck,” said Dupuis when asked why he and Crosby are a good fit. “We want to go north, and we want to put pucks behind their defensemen. “If you get there with speed and create turnovers, you know Sid is going to take the puck and make the right play with it. “We want the puck on our tape. It’s a matter of getting the puck and playing in the offensive zone.” Dupuis declined to talk much about the streak. Dupuis ran his streak to 16 games, getting an assist on Richard Park’s goal, when the host Penguins beat the New York Rangers, 5-2, on April 5. He continued on page 164
163
continued from page 163
Dupuis counts his speed and tenacity among the factors that make him a good on-ice partner for Sidney Crosby.
preferred to speak about the Penguins winning their 50th game. “Fifty is the big number today,” said the 6-foot-1, 205-pounder. “Fifty wins is the goal we set for ourselves at the start of the season. We should all be proud of 50 wins.” When pressed, Dupuis said, “It’s a good streak. But those points are coming only because I’m putting in the effort and playing the right way. And because I’m playing with great players. “Tonight, Tango [Eric Tangradi] made a great play, found me in the slot, I put a muffin on net and Parksy got the rebound.” When it was noted that Park banked in a shot from behind the goal line off Rangers goalie Martin Biron, Dupuis smiled and said, “Sometimes it’s luck, too.” Coach Dan Bylsma thinks Dupuis has expanded his game: “He’s moved himself into the areas where, offensively, he can be real effective with his speed and skill,” Bylsma said after the Penguins’ season finale, a 4-2 home victory vs. Philadelphia on April 7 that saw Dupuis net his 25th goal. “I think, years back, you saw Pascal come down the wing, take the slapper and try for high glove a lot.
164
That was his signature movement. “Now he’s on the inside, he goes to the net, he uses his speed to be aggressive on the forecheck. He hunts pucks down and he goes to the net. A lot of his points and a lot of what he does offensively is getting on the inside. I think that’s why you see him being an effective player in the offensive zone.” Added Crosby, “There’s nothing fluky about [17] games in a row with a point. You’ve got to have some major consistency to do that. He’s taken advantage of his chances, and his work ethic gives him the opportunity every night to produce.” The streak’s end isn’t the only time NHL rules have conspired against Dupuis statistically. During a between-periods interview, ROOT Sports’ Dan Potash pointed out that, considering the passing sequence, Dupuis merited an assist on a goal he had just scored. “Can’t do that, Dan,” Dupuis said. “You can’t get an assist on your own goal.” If anyone could, it might have been Pascal Dupuis during those magic 17 games.
Dupuis’ work ethic and his ability to take advantage of opportunities have contributed to his success this season.

AROUND THE NHL By: Mike Prisuta

RECORD-SETTING DEVILS: New Jersey enters the postseason having allowed an NHL-low and a franchiserecord 27 power-play goals and with an NHL-best 89.6 percent success rate killing Martin Brodeur penalties. The 27 goals surrendered shorthanded left New Jersey one off the league’s modernera record (26, Chicago, 1973-74) but the 89.6 number topped the NHL’s previous modern-era mark (89.3, Dallas, 1999-00). The Devils’ penalty-killing prowess helped goaltender Martin Brodeur set an NHL record by winning 30 games in a season for the 14th time (he had shared the previous mark with Patrick Roy at 13). THEY’RE BACK: The Red Wings’ franchise-record streak of 21 consecutive postseason berths is the longest active streak in North American sports (the NBA’s San Antonio Spurs are second at 15 straight seasons) and the fifth-longest streak in NHL history (Boston, 29, 1967-68 through 1995-96). Detroit’s 100-point season extended its NHL record in that department to 12 in a row. CROWDED CREASE: The defending-champion Bruins used four goaltenders this season (Tim Thomas, Tuuka Rask, Marty Turco and Anton Khudobin), the first time that’s happened in Boston since 2007-08. YEAR OF THE GOALIE: Coyotes goalie Mike Smith had his career-best streak of 234:25 without allowing a goal snapped on April 6 against St. Louis. It was only the third-longest streak in the league this season behind Ilya Bryzgalov of Philadelphia (249:34) and Brian Elliott of St. Louis (241:33). Smith at least came away with an NHL record of 161 consecutive saves during his streak. BACK ON TOP: The Rangers finished on top of the Eastern Conference for the first time since 1993-94. STILL FIRING AWAY: The Caps’ Alex Ovechkin’s two shots on April 5 against Florida pushed his season total to 301. Ovechkin is the only player in the NHL to launch 300 or more shots in each of the last seven seasons since he entered the NHL in 2005-06.
