GAME NOTES By: Bob Grove

THE SERIES The Penguins open their 2012-13 home schedule tonight against Toronto, marking the fourth time the Maple Leafs have provided the opposition for the home opener. Current Leafs head coach Randy Carlyle, who broke into the NHL with Toronto but had been traded to the Penguins four months earlier, was in the Pittsburgh lineup on Five of the last six games between Penguins and Oct. 11, 1978 when Darryl Sittler scored twice the Maple Leafs here in to help the Leafs to a 3-2 victory over the Pittsburgh have been decided by a single goal. Penguins. . . When the Leafs played here in the Penguins’ home opener on Oct. 7, 1995, Sergei Zubov and Petr Nedved each scored in their Pittsburgh debut and Richard Park scored his first NHL goal — short-handed — in an 8-3 victory over Toronto. . . On Oct. 10, 2002, the Penguins matched their worst defeat in a home opener by falling to the Leafs, 6-0. Alexander Mogilny and Mats Sundin had two goals each, Darcy Tucker added four assists and current Penguins’ assistant to the GM Tom Fitzgerald — playing his first game in a Toronto uniform — had an assist. . . Pittsburgh went 2-2-0 against the Leafs last season and has not lost the series to Toronto in the past three campaigns (7-4-1). . . The Leafs have points in five of their last six games against the Penguins (3-1-2). . . Toronto has scored four or more goals in 14 of its last 22 games against Pittsburgh. . . THE PENGUINS The Penguins are 23-12-9 all-time in home openers, with points in six of their last seven (4-1-2). . . Tonight Dan Bylsma ties Red Kelly for second place on the Penguins’ all-time list for games coached (274) behind Eddie Johnston (516). Bylsma, who began the season second to Johnston in coaching victories (165), is trying to become the first coach in Pittsburgh history to start and finish four consecutive seasons. . . Pittsburgh opened the season with road games against Philadelphia and the New York Rangers this past Saturday and Sunday, and the Penguins will return to the road Friday in Winnipeg and Sunday in Ottawa before returning home to face the New York Islanders next Tuesday. . . Evgeni Malkin had points in 17 of his first 18 career games against the Leafs (9-29-38, or 2.1 pointsper-game), but he’s been held off the scoresheet in both of his last two games against Toronto . . . Malkin has points in eight consecutive regular-season home Marc-Andre Fleury began the games (7-13-20, or 2.5 season needing one victory to points-per-game). He has multiple points pass Tom Barrasso and become the Penguins’ all-time leader in in each of those games. . . Neither Malkin goaltending victories at 227. nor Sidney Crosby were in the lineup last season when the Penguins kicked off their home schedule with a 4-2 win over Florida. Crosby has points in six straight games against Toronto (9+1), with goals in all six. . . Tomas Vokoun is just the ninth goaltender in Penguins’ history to catch with his right hand. The others were Les Binkley, Paul Hoganson, Roy Edwards, Greg Millen, Pat Riggin, Tom Barrasso, J-S Aubin and Mathieu Garon. None of the previous eight won his first start with the Penguins; two of those (Barrasso, 5-8 loss and Garon, 4-5 loss) made that first start against the Leafs.

The Leafs’ Randy Carlyle is one of two former Penguins behind the bench of an NHL team this season, joining Dave Tippett (Phoenix). Carlyle, who played 397 games for the Penguins between 1978 and 1984, remains the third-highest scoring defenseman in team history (323 points) behind Ron Stackhouse (343) and Paul Coffey (440). The First Ever ES Hybrid. 40 MPG EPA-Estimated.* At first glance, it’s a bold statement of style. Read between the lines, however, and you’ll discover that the first ever ES Hybrid doesn’t merely make a statement, it backs it up. Take, for instance, the sleek, sculpted appearance. It’s not just for show—the aerodynamic design boosts fuel efficiency up to an EPA-estimated 40 MPG.* And while the hand-stitched panels and precision-crafted interior make a stunning first impression, the available next-generation technologies in connectivity elevate the conversation. Ultimately, the 2013 ES Hybrid not only sends a message—it’s sure to build a following.

COMMUNITY UPDATE PENGUINS’ ORGANIZATION EMBRACES COMMUNITY Penguins’ staff and the team’s Alumni Association had a busy off-season hosting and participating in a wide variety of charitable activities. On August 28, the Penguins Alumni Association hosted its 15th Annual Charity Golf Classic. The event celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Penguins’ 1992 Stanley Cup Championship with more than 25 members of the 1992 team in attendance. The sold-out event raised over $30,000 for local alumni charities. A month later, on September 20, the Penguins organization held its annual Summer Sticks Golf Classic raising funds for the team’s scholarship programs. Penguins’ staffers manned shovels and gardening tools on October 19 when the organization participated in the NHL’s Green Legacy Tree Project, a program that provided a variety of trees for locations throughout Pittsburgh’s Hill District. By day’s end, Penguins employees had planted 30 trees, enhancing the uptown neighborhood. On October 20, Penguins staff donated their time and efforts to Operation Troop Appreciation, a program that supplies soldiers serving overseas with a vast array of amenities from back home. continued on page 22

Staff members packed boxes full of wish list items that were then shipped to soldiers serving across the globe. On November 16, as Thanksgiving grew near, Penguins coaches, trainers and staff joined forces with the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank and the Penguins Elite Youth Team to distribute frozen turkeys and a variety of Thanksgiving dinner fixings to 100 needy families in Pittsburgh. The autumn breeze quickly turned to a wintery wind which marked the time for the Penguins annual Project Bundle-Up Shopping Day with The Salvation Army. Penguins’ coaches, team executives and alumni spent the afternoon on December 11 with young children in need of winter outerwear. After a shopping spree at the new Dick’s Sporting Goods store in Cranberry, the children all went home with new coats, boots, gloves, hats and scarves. With the holidays, came the Penguins organization’s annual Operation Shoebox program. The team’s front office staff purchased items to fill and decorate over 60 shoebox gifts for residents at the Harmer Village Senior Care facility in Cheswick. On December 19, a group of Pens’ employees delivered the gifts, visiting with residents room-toroom and spreading Christmas cheer. As the whirlwind of community-based initiatives continue throughout the season for Penguins staff and alumni, they’re looking forward to each new experience in helping others.

AROUND THE NHL By Mike Prisuta

goaltender Martin Brodeur is back for his 20th NHL season at age 40, the same age at which Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson commences NHL campaign No. 17. But those two must still respect Teemu Selanne Anaheim’s Teemu Selanne as an elder. Selanne is starting his 20th year in the NHL at 42. Among his achievements last season were becoming the oldest player in NHL history to appear in all 82 regular-season games (41 years, 279 days at season’s end) and becoming the highest-scoring Finn in NHL history (1,406 career points, including 66 in 2011-12). “Age is a funny thing,” Selanne said. “It sounds pretty old when you say 42 as a hockey player. Mentally, I am still the same level as [27-year-old Ducks teammate] Ryan Getzlaf. “That is most important and that is why I am still in the game.”

CANADIENS MAKEOVER: Montreal enters the season with a distinct Pittsburgh presence, having hired former Penguins defenseman Marc Bergevin as its new general manager, having hired former Penguins bench boss Michel Therrien as its new head coach, and having signed former Penguins winger Colby Armstrong from Toronto. HAT TRICK: Nashville General Manager David Poile has been a finalist for the NHL General Manager of the Year Award in each of its first three years of existence. Poile went 1-for-2 in the offseason, matching the 14-year, $110 million offer sheet defenseman Shea Weber signed with Philadelphia but losing defenseman Ryan Suter to Minnesota.

TOUGH TO REPEAT: The Kings are attempting to become the NHL’s first back-to-back champion since the 1997-98 Detroit Red Wings.

MARIO LEMIEUX CO-OWNER/CHAIRMAN

Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in National Hockey League history, is in his 14th season as co-owner and chairman of the board of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice — including six straight playoff appearances and a Stanley Cup championship in 2009. The Penguins entered the 2012-13 season having sold out 254 straight games while setting new standards for local television ratings, merchandise sales, website traffic and social media. Lemieux and Burkle were driving forces in the quest for a new multi-purpose arena for Pittsburgh and were proud to open CONSOL Energy Center in August, 2010. The sparkling facility is rated one of the top facilities in North America and hosted such national events as the 2012 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament Second and Third Rounds and the 2012 NHL Draft. Known as “Le Magnifique,” Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. An immaculately gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranks eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org. The Penguins ownership group, local labor organizations and members of the Pittsburgh business community honored Lemieux in 2012 with a statue to commemorate his career and contributions to the city and the region. Appropriately named “Le Magnifique,” the statue, by nationally-acclaimed sculptor Bruce Wolfe, can be seen outside of the Trib Total Media gate at CONSOL Energy Center. Mario and his wife, Nathalie, and their four children live in Sewickley.

RON BURKLE CO-OWNER

Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 14th season as co-owner of the Penguins. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they have become one of the outstanding ownership tandems in professional sports. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his essential role in negotiations for a new arena. CONSOL Energy Center is considered one of the finest indoor facilities in North America and has attracted many national-level events to Pittsburgh — including the 2013 NCAA Frozen Four, coming in April, 2013. Under the leadership of Lemieux and Burkle, the Penguins have sold out every game for five-plus seasons and consistently rank among the most fan-friendly and community-minded teams in the NHL and all of pro sports. The Penguins reached back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals in 2008 and 2009 and won the Cup in ‘09. The team’s solid foundation of ownership has enabled hockey management to spend to the salary cap, sign many of the team’s young core players to long-term contracts and put a competitive team on the ice year after year — leading to six straight playoff berths. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is Co-Chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League, Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy and AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA). Ron was the Founder and Chairman of the Ralph’s/Food4Less Foundation and the Fred Meyer Inc. Foundation. He was a member of the board of Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: OXY), KB Home (NYSE: KBH), Kaufman & Broad S.A. (Euronext: KOF), Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO), the J. Paul Getty Trust, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Music Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. He has received numerous honors and awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year, the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year Award and the APLA Commitment to Life Award.

DAVID MOREHOUSE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER & PRESIDENT

David Morehouse has established himself as one of the most dynamic senior executives in the National Hockey League. Since being named President of the Penguins in April, 2007, Morehouse has reshaped the team’s image and strategic vision with an emphasis on branding, fan relations, youth marketing, community interaction, corporate outreach and innovative technology. He was given the additional responsibilities of Chief Executive Officer in September, 2010, and oversees every aspect of the Penguins’ operations, reporting directly to co-owners Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle. Under Morehouse’s leadership, the Penguins quickly developed a new commitment to innovative fan outreach — including an annual event where players personally deliver season tickets to fans’ homes and a special preseason game where all 18,000 tickets are distributed free to local youth. His emphasis on branding and marketing, coupled with the team’s success on the ice, enabled the Penguins to lead all U.S.-based NHL and NBA teams in local television ratings during the 2011-12 season. Keeping with that trend, the Penguins led all U.S.-based NHL teams in website traffic and Twitter followers while continually setting new standards for merchandise sales. Youth hockey participation also is on the rise — in part because of Morehouse’s support for efforts such as Sidney Crosby’s Little Penguins Learn to Play program, which distributes free head-to-toe hockey equipment, including skates, to 1,000 kids aged 5-7 each year. The Penguins have sold out every game for five-plus seasons, a streak that had reached 254 games before the start of the 2012-13 season. They also have sold out all suites for four-plus seasons and actually increased capacity at CONSOL Energy Center by 300 seats (to 18,387) after the arena’s inaugural season in 2010-11. Morehouse himself was named 2011 CEO Communicator of the Year by the Pittsburgh Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America. The Pittsburgh native joined the Penguins in 2004 as Senior Consultant on the new arena project following a career in national politics that included stints at the White House, Pentagon and on Capitol Hill as well as key roles in two Presidential campaigns. Morehouse attended the Community College of Allegheny County and Duquesne University and received a master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. He and his wife, Vanessa, have four children and live in Sewickley Heights.

RAY SHERO

EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT & GENERAL MANAGER

Ray Shero has established himself as one of the premiere general managers in the National Hockey League. Shero, 50, who is in his seventh season as Pittsburgh’s GM, has transformed a franchise that missed the playoffs from 2002-06 into a perennial championship contender, including two Stanley Cup Final appearances and a Cup title in 2009. Shero, who was named general manager of the Penguins in May, 2006, arrived in Pittsburgh with a firm, forward-thinking managerial style that incorporates cutting-edge methods of technology, player relations, prospect development and salary cap management. Shero’s efforts have secured the Penguins’ long-term stability and competiveness with his masterful maneuvering of the salary cap — the Penguins ranked No. 3 out of 122 pro sports franchises in spending efficiency according to Bloomberg Business Week — and multi-year signings of the team’s core players: Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Marc-Andre Fleury, Brooks Orpik, Kris Letang, and James Neal. Shero’s riskiest and boldest move paid off with hockey’s highest prize. With the Penguins needing a jolt of life late in the 2008-09 season, he promoted Wilkes-Barre/Scranton head coach Dan Bylsma to Pittsburgh. Bylsma led a turnaround that resulted in a championship in ’09. Bylsma also won the Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s “Most Outstanding Coach” in ’11. Shero cut his administrative teeth during 14 seasons as an assistant general manager with the Nashville Predators (1998-06) and Ottawa Senators (1993-98). Shero, a native of St. Paul, Minn., was raised in a hockey family filled with tradition. His father, Fred Shero, played for the NY Rangers (1947-50) and coached the Philadelphia Flyers for seven seasons. Fred won back-to-back Stanley Cups as head coach of the Flyers in 1974 and ’75 and also served as general manager of the Rangers for three years (1978-80), leading the club to the Stanley Cup Final in 1979. The Sheros are one of the few father-son tandems to have their names on the Cup. Shero played college hockey at St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y. He twice led the team in scoring and was named team captain on two occasions. He graduated in 1984 as one of the top-10 scorers in school history. Shero, who was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in the 1982 NHL Draft, spent seven years as a player agent before making the transition to the front office. Shero is actively involved with USA Hockey and is a member of the USA Hockey National Team Advisory Group. Ray and his wife, Karen, and their two sons reside in Upper St. Clair.

JASON BOTTERILL ASSISTANT GENERAL MANAGER

Jason Botterill is in his fourth full season as assistant general manager after being promoted to his current position in May, 2009, by GM Ray Shero. As assistant GM, Botterill works closely with Shero on all hockey-related matters, including scouting, player development and contract negotiations. He also manages hockey operations and acts as GM for the club’s top minor-league affiliate, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League. Prior to his promotion, Botterill, 36, worked two seasons as director of hockey administration with the Penguins; his responsibilities included salary cap management, professional and amateur scouting and overseeing prospect development. Botterill’s avant-garde approach and understanding of the salary cap has been a major asset for the Penguins. RULES OF THE GAME PRESENTED BY

BOARDING

BOARDING To check or push a defenseless opponent in such a manner that causes the opponent to hit or impact into the boards dangerously or violently.

T:8.5”

B:8.75”

S:8.5”

-

The player applying the check needs to ensure his opponent is not in a defenseless position and if so, must avoid contact.

-

The player with the puck needs to avoid placing himself in a dangerous and defenseless position.

-

Any unnecessary contact with a player playing the puck on an obvious “icing” or “off-sides” play that does not impact boards should be treated as “charging.”

DELAY OF GAME A player may be penalized when, in the opinion of the Referee, is delaying the game in any matter. (Normally six conditions) 1.) Player or goaltender intentionally shoots or throws the puck out

of the playing area.

2.) A defensive player or goaltender in the defensive zone shoots the

puck directly (without being deflected) over the glass.

3.) A player or goaltender intentionally knocks the net’s goalpost off

its moorings, which stops the play.

4.) The goaltender plays the puck out of the trapezoid behind the net. 5.) The goaltender freezes the puck rather than passing it to a team-

mate when no player on the opposing team is within sufficient distance to apply offensive pressure.

6.) Any skater other than the goaltender who uses their hands to

make the puck unplayable.

INTERFERENCE INTERFERENCE

BODY POSITION: Body position will be determined as the player skating in front of or beside his opponent, traveling in the same direction. - A player who is behind an opponent, who does not have the puck, may not use his stick, body or free hand in order to restrain his opponent. POSSESSION OF THE PUCK: The last player to touch the puck, other than the goaltenders, will be considered the player in possession. RESTRAIN: The actions of a player or goaltender who does not have body position, but instead uses illegal means to impede an opponent who is not in possession of the puck. PICK: The action of a player or goaltender who checks an opponent who is not in possession of the puck and is unaware of the impending check/hit. FREE HAND: When a free hand is used to hold, pull, tug, grab or physically restrain an opponent from moving freely, this must be penalized as holding.

STICK: A player who does not have body position on his opponent, who used his stick to impede or prevent his opponent from moving freely on the ice shall be assessed a hooking penalty.

OFF-SIDES Players of the attacking team must not precede the puck into the attacking zone. (Two determining factors) 1.) One of a player’s skates is not in contact with or behind the blue

line of the attacking zone before the puck enters that zone.

2.) The puck must completely cross the edge of the blue line nearest

the attacking zone to be considered inside the attacking zone.

The act of using the stick in a manner that enables a player to restrain an opponent.

-

When a player is checking another in such a way that there is only stick-tostick contact, such action is not to be penalized as hooking.

TOURS AVAILABLE

GET A BEHIND THE SCENES LOOK AT THE ARENA

Tickets for CONSOL Energy Center’s tours draw visitors of all ages and interests who want to see more of the Pittsburgh Penguins’ home and the city’s newest, greenest entertainment facility. CONSOL Energy Center tours, presented by Bayer MaterialScience, walk visitors through areas of the building that fans might not get to see when they attend a game or other entertainment. For example, on the PNC Legends Level more than $1 million worth of artwork, done in collaboration with James Gallery of Pittsburgh, is on display. It includes large wall murals, 10 PNC Legendary Moments shadowboxes and photography featuring Pittsburgh Penguins players. Tours provide guests with an exclusive look at all seating levels of CONSOL Energy Center, as well as the First Niagara, Captain Morgan and Lexus clubs, a Canadian Party Suite, select locker rooms and more. Based on events taking place in the building, Suite 66 and the Visitor’s Hockey Locker Room are shown when available. These areas are of interest to many people but not ordinarily accessible to most visitors. One of the other features included in the tours is the centerpiece PensVision, measuring nearly 25’ wide and 15’ high and 70,000 pounds. With true High Definition resolution along with enhanced contrast and brightness, the screens redefine the arena video experience for Penguins fans. Just below the center-ice scoreboard there are two, 360 degree LED ribbon boards. These are a first of their kind in Pittsburgh. The scoreboard and LED ribbon boards combined cost a total of $8 million. Throughout CONSOL Energy Center there are over 800 flat-screen TVs. They are used to display messages to fans, keep fans in the game while away from

their seats along with displaying the menus at the concession stands throughout the arena. On the FedEx Level, just above the American Eagle Gate, sits the World’s Largest Goalie Mask. The idea of James Gallery, it was painted by renowned artist David Arrigo, who has painted masks for several NHL goaltenders. The display is presented by Bayer MaterialScience and features “The Science of Sport” kiosks showcasing the science behind sports including how a hockey puck moves on ice. The Goalie mask, which is 9.5 feet high by 8 feet wide by 12 feet deep and weighs in between 700-800 lbs, features the celebration of fans and players after a goal is scored. The materials used to construct the mask are protected by a high-performance polyurethane coating containing raw materials produced by Bayer MaterialScience. This basecoat serves as the foundation for both the white background and the artist’s colors. A final polyurethane clearcoat over the artwork provides additional protection and durability. Also part of the tour is the Highmark Kid’s Zone — an interactive play area that offers both educational and recreational activities for children of all ages. The Highmark Kid’s Zone includes four Wii consoles, videos and trivia, faceoff and puck games, along with a replica of the famous Sidney Crosby dryer. Located further down the hall is the Highmark Wall of Champions. The Highmark Wall of Champions is two stories tall and contains the official jerseys of all PIHL (Pittsburgh Interscholastic Hockey League) teams, regional high schools as well as select other amateur teams in the region. “The tour highlights the environmentally friendly components of the building which qualified CONSOL Energy Center to become the first NHL Arena to receive LEED Gold Certification,” says David Peart, Vice President, Pittsburgh Penguins. “The tours allow us to highlight our continuing efforts toward improving the environment, which are detailed on 12 different plaques located throughout the building,” says Mr. Peart. PITTSBURGH PENGUINS FOUNDATION

HEADS UP PITTSBURGH

KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE

In 2012, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation expanded the HEADS UP Pittsburgh free baseline concussion testing program to include youth athletes ages 10-14 in all sports. Since the program started in 2011, over 3,400 youth hockey players have been tested along with 1,500 athletes representing 12 other sports. The program originally began with youth hockey players only. Testing took place at UPMC Sports Medicine on the South Side, as well as at four Community College of Allegheny County locations — Boyce, North, South and West Hills Center. “Our original youth hockey testing program in 2011 was a tremendous success because it touched thousands of young players and created increased awareness about concussion safety,” said Dave Soltesz, president of the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation. “Based on our mission to actively promote physical well being among young people in the community, it was an easy decision to expand the program to other sports beyond hockey.” While athletes are being tested, their parents meet with UPMC Sports Medicine Concussion Program staff to learn about “HEADS UP Pittsburgh.” Certified athletic trainers from the UPMC Sports Concussion Program supervise the program and testing. MAY 25, 1991 STANLEY CUP CLINCHER With an 8-0 victory over the Minnesota North Stars, the Penguins become Stanley Cup champions for the first time in their 24-year history.

JOIN THE RUSH!

TM

Introduced in the mid 1990’s, the American Eagle Student Rush Program is one of the most popular and well known marketing initiatives of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Designed to sell remaining game-day inventory, the American Eagle Student Rush program provides the Pittsburgh Penguins an opportunity to introduce new fans to the game of hockey at a discounted rate. Based upon the positive feedback the organization has received from current season ticket holders who were one-time Student Rush participants, the program has been successful in developing a long-term relationship with young, active Pittsburghers. During the 2012-13 season, at least 200 American Eagle Student Rush tickets will be made available for each regular season home game at CONSOL Energy Center. To avoid long waits outside during the winter months, the organization will host online pre-sales for most games. To receive pre-sale information, students can text RUSH to 32623 to register for the American Eagle Student Rush Mobile Club. Each pregame text includes the opportunity to win two free tickets to the next home game! In addition to the 200 tickets offered each game, several special Student Rush nights will be held. At least 500 student rush tickets will be available for these select games at the American Eagle Gate. Music, prizes and giveaways will also be provided courtesy of American Eagle Outfitters. For more information on the American Eagle Student Rush program and a schedule of upcoming Student Rush nights, scan the code at the top of the page or visit pittsburghpenguins.com/studentrushÂ

BEHIND THE SCENES WITH THE PENGUINS速 ON AND OFF THE ICE

PENGUINS ADJUST TO SHORTENED SEASON By Brooks Bratten

Once mid- to late- January rolls around, there are usually two things that Pittsburghers can count on. For one, an often-unwelcome combination of frigid temperatures and frozen precipitation dominates the forecast. With that, the Pittsburgh Penguins typically enter into the second half of a marathon campaign. The snow and ice is likely to remain in 2013, but things will be different for the city’s boys of winter. The Penguins will begin the new season with a shortened schedule, condensed into 48 games that will play out over the next three-plus months. It’s a much different situation than what players are accustomed to, but they’re looking forward to adapting in the moment. “It’s going to be a sprint,” “IT’S GOING forward Pascal Dupuis said. TO BE A “Usually there’s a long 82 SPRINT TO game season. I’d say it’s a THE FINAL.” marathon. This one could ~Pascal Dupuis be a 200-meter race. It’s going to be a sprint to the Final. Obviously, you can’t come out of the gate flat, or you’ll be far behind right away.” Penguins captain Sidney Crosby is certainly aware of the added importance that each and every contest will bring over the coming weeks. He acknowledged that it’s imperative to burst out of the gate with an added gear. “Games become that much bigger,” Crosby said. “That’s exciting. I know we’ve all missed that competition and we’ve all kind of craved that. We’re going to get a good dose of that, especially early on. I think it’s good for everyone and I think it forces everyone to be even more prepared than maybe they typically would be.” continued on page 113

Marc-Andre Fleury is anxious to see how he will acclimate himself with a shortened season in the goaltender position. New backup Tomas Vokoun will likely help in that area. “I think it will be good at first to get into the rhythm from playing a lot,” Fleury said. “We have Tomas here who’s a really good goalie, so I’m sure we’ll be splitting some time.” The man who will make that call, among many others, is head coach Dan Bylsma. Entering into his fourth full season with the team, the Penguins’ bench boss is facing a new set of challenges at the helm. With the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins already halfway through their season, Bylsma says the big club will look to utilize the systems that have been working for the American Hockey League affiliate. “We went into September with some adjustments that we were going to make and we’ve made them in Wilkes-Barre,” Bylsma said. “Frankly, we’ve benefited from Wilkes-Barre going though it in training camp, going through it in their implementation process, and what they’ve gone through during the season in terms of that implementation. We’ve used that and learned from that. “I think our team is going to be ready to go, at least in terms of knowing what we’re doing on the ice on Day One.” The National Hockey League and its member clubs went through a shortened season during the ’94-’95 campaign that saw teams have to make adjustments accordingly. None of the players on the Penguins current roster were skating in the NHL during that time, but Bylsma and his staff have taken note of what transpired almost 20 years ago. continued on page 114

113

continued from page 113

“There’s a lot of that we did look at,” Bylsma said. “We’ve looked at how many players were used in a 48-game schedule versus a full season, and what that meant for injuries and player call-ups. We’ve looked at a lot of different scenarios. We’ve gone through those things and we have seen some things that we will apply to what we’re doing. “We’ve talked to people, coaches and players, that went through ‘94-’95 as well to get their sentiment. We’ve got a lot of stats, we’ve got a lot of scenarios and it’s going to mean something for how we make decisions in some of those areas.” With the value of each upcoming contest becoming magnified, fans undoubtedly have something to look forward to. Not only is hockey back, but also the competition, intensity, and all that comes with the game will provide some wildly entertaining evenings for aficionados of the Pittsburgh Penguins. “From what I’ve heard, people are craving hockey,” Crosby said. “They want to see it and we’re all excited. We know they are, and they’re going to see lots of it for the next few months. It should be a lot of fun.”

“FROM WHAT I’VE HEARD, PEOPLE ARE CRAVING HOCKEY. THEY WANT TO SEE IT AND WE’RE ALL EXCITED.” ~ Sidney Crosby

PROJECT POWER PLAY Project Power Play represents a group of partners; The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, Highmark, the City of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County, who are focused on building 12 multi-sport dek hockey rinks to encourage physical activity and provide accessibility to hockey facilities for youth. The first two rinks in the City of Pittsburgh are located at Banksville Park on Crane Avenue and at Lewis Park in Hazelwood adjacent to the YMCA, both opened at the end of 2012. Over the next three years, 10 more rinks will be constructed as part of the $2.1 million project. Project Power Play funding comes from Highmark which is committing $1.5 million and the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation which is providing $600,000. Additional contributions come from the City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County and the local municipalities, which are providing land for the rinks, as well as maintenance, lighting and other support. Dave Soltesz, president of the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation says, “The Foundation’s mission includes creating opportunities for youth that stress physical fitness, teamwork and sportsmanship. The dek hockey rinks and related programs will serve youth in the region, fulfill the Foundation’s mission to encourage youth fitness, and help to make hockey a more accessible sport. These are the best dek hockey rinks anywhere,” Soltesz says. “You have to see it to believe it.” The facilities, 155’ x 75’, are multi-sport courts and each includes a premier dasherboard system like those used in the NHL, players’ benches, penalty box, scorer’s table, goals at each end, and start-up dek hockey equipment. Each facility will have nine access gates, including handicap access via the service gate. Black vinyl fences enclose each facility. Soltesz says, “We are proud of our sport. We are proud of our region, and we are proud to put these types of facilities in the communities.”

PITTSBURGH PENGUINS FOUNDATION

PensFIT

In a first-of-its-kind program, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation is providing free floor hockey equipment to more than 250 elementary and middle schools in Allegheny County. The program, known as PensFIT, got its start on Friday, November 9 when Penguins alum Phil Bourque delivered the first set of equipment to Neil Armstrong Middle School in Bethel Park. The equipment for each school retails at more than $1,000 and includes goals, sticks, stick bags, hockey balls, goalie equipment and a storage bag. In addition to providing student workbooks and instructional manuals, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation will offer a seminar at CONSOL Energy Center for the schools’ physical education teachers – hosted by the Penguins’ coaching staff and team alumni. PensFIT is designed as a three-year initiative to assist elementary schools in providing new opportunities for physical education classes. The long-term goal is to supply free equipment to 600 elementary and middle schools in 10 counties. Schools from surrounding counties will be added during the second year of the program. The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation has teamed up with corporate partner FedEx Ground on delivery of the equipment. FedEx Ground will provide shipping to the schools free of charge.

WILKES-BARRE/SCRANTON

PENGUINS

Joining the American Hockey League for its inaugural season in 1999-00, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins have established themselves as one the most successful franchises in the league. After posting a 23-43-9-5 record in its first season of play and missing the playoffs, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton enjoyed one of the biggest turnarounds in league history as the team made it to its first-ever Calder Cup Final appearance in 2001. Though they would fall to the Saint John Flames in six games, the Penguins would carry on a tradition of success both on and off the ice. In total, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton has appeared in the Calder Cup Final three times and reached the playoffs in 11 out of 13 seasons, including 10 consecutive postseason berths — tied for the longest active streak in the AHL. The 1999-00 season saw the Penguins sellout 26 games their inaugural season. The following year Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton set the league record by selling out the entire season (40-games) en route to a streak of 144 consecutive BRAD THIESSEN sellouts that still stands today as an AHL record. The AHL-affiliate to the Pittsburgh Penguins since its inception, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton has helped develop former draft picks such as Marc-Andre Fleury, Brooks Orpik, Tyler Kennedy and Joe Vitale. Ten former Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins lifted the Stanley Cup when Pittsburgh defeated Detroit in seven games in 2009. continued on page 150

continued from page 149

The Penguins have also seen many of their coaches rise up the ranks with Dan Bylsma and Todd Reirden manning the bench in Pittsburgh, Michel Therrien in Montreal, Todd Richards in Columbus and Mike Yeo in Minnesota. The 2010-11 season marked one for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton history books. Under the guidance of first-year head coach John Hynes, the Penguins went 58-21-0-1 SIMON DESPRES to claim their first-ever Macgregor Kilpatrick Trophy as AHL regular-season champions. In the process, Hynes won the Louis A.R. Pieri Award as the AHL’s Outstanding Coach, while the team set records for wins in a season (58), points in a season ZAC SILL (117), and fewest losses in a season (21). Goaltender Brad Thiessen joined Dany Sabourin as the team’s second recipient of the Aldege “Baz” Bastien Memorial Award. Now in their 14th season of play, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins have amassed more wins (450) and points (987) than any other team in the league over the last ten years.

MIKE LANGE

PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK PLAY-BY-PLAY ANNOUNCER

One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange is calling games in his 36th season with the Penguins, handling radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM “The X” and the Penguins Radio Network. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.

PHIL BOURQUE

PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK COLOR ANALYST

Two-time Stanley Cup Champion Phil Bourque is in his eighth season on the Penguins broadcast team, serving as color commentator alongside Mike Lange. A gritty winger/defenseman, Bourque was signed by Pittsburgh as a free agent in 1982, and went on to record 164 points (75G-89A) in 344 regular-season games with the Penguins between 1983 and 1992. For his career he totaled 199 points (88G-111A) in 477 games with the Penguins, New York Rangers and Ottawa. Since retiring from professional hockey in 2000, Bourque has co-hosted Penguins pre- and post-game shows on the Penguins Radio Network and worked as a contributor for WPXI-TV’s coverage of Penguins hockey.

ATI – INVESTING IN PITTSBURGH’S FUTURE… Committed to Maintaining American Leadership in Manufacturing Mission-Critical Metallics® ATI is building an advanced Hot Rolling and Processing Facility (HRPF) in Brackenridge, PA. This project, just outside Pittsburgh, will be the most powerful hot rolling facility in the world for manufacturing nickel-based alloys, titanium, specialty alloys, zirconium and stainless steel sheet and plate. At a cost of $1.1 billion, the HRPF is among the largest industrial projects currently underway in the United States. When the HRPF is completed in 2014, ATI will have invested nearly $4.4 billion in new, advanced manufacturing capabilities and asset acquisitions since 2004. These investments have been in Western Pennsylvania, Utah, North Carolina, Ohio, Wisconsin, California, Oregon, Alabama and Massachusetts. ATI believes that Pittsburgh, Western Pennsylvania and the United States must be in the vanguard of global manufacturing and that the American worker can compete with anyone given the best products, tools and technologies.

The Pittsburgh Penguins Elite program presented by Dick’s Sporting Goods will feature 13 teams playing at the AAA level — eight boys teams and five girls teams. “Part of our overall vision of supporting local youth hockey has been to create an elite Pittsburgh Penguins youth program that would attract top players in different age groups, offering an excellent environment to develop skills, teach teamwork and compete against top teams from other areas,” said David Morehouse, CEO and President of the Pittsburgh Penguins. “The Pittsburgh Amateur Hockey League (PAHL) and Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League (PIHL) do such a great job of growing the game here, and there are a number of good amateur programs. But we thought it made sense to have a AAA program directly affiliated with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

LITTLE PENGUINS LEARN TO PLAY HOCKEY

Sidney Crosby and his family wanted to help parents introduce their children to the game of hockey — and to do it without having to incur a prohibitive up-front cost. The result is the Little Penguins Learn to Play Hockey program. This generous donation and tremendous, one-of-a-kind opportunity allows children, aged 4-8, to receive free head-to-toe hockey equipment and 10 sessions of on-ice instruction. The 2012-13 season will be the fifth consecutive year for the Little Penguins program, which continues to grow. Last season twenty-three rinks hosted the program, which includes four girls-only locations. Since the program began during the 2008-2009 season more than 3,200 children have been introduced to hockey through this program. This season, 1,000 participants aged 4-8 will receive free gear and learn the game. Thanks to the combined efforts of Sidney Crosby, the Pittsburgh Penguins, Penguins Foundation, Reebok, and Dick’s Sporting Goods, all participants receive full sets of Reebok SC87 equipment, including skates, stick, helmet, gloves, pants, shoulder pads, shin pads, elbow pads, and an equipment bag, as well as an official Little Penguins jersey and helmet stickers. After four highly successful seasons, the program sells out quickly. During the pre-registration period, parents may view information regarding participating rinks, starting dates, number of sessions, and times of instructional sessions, which are listed on the Penguins’ website. For participant convenience, registration will occur online at pittsburghpenguins.com. “We were both excited and amazed by the reaction to the Little Penguins program in previous seasons, and we’re happy to be able to

offer the program again for another year,” Crosby said. “The goal is to continue to create opportunities for more kids in the Pittsburgh area to take up hockey. With the Little Penguins program, they can receive head-to-toe hockey equipment and learn the game in a fun and organized way.” “It’s a tribute to Sid and his family that they want to reach out and create this incredible opportunity for children in the Pittsburgh area,” said Penguins CEO and President David Morehouse. “One of their goals was to help parents by providing free head-to-toe hockey equipment to properly equip their children. The Penguins are honored to join Reebok and Dick’s Sporting Goods in supporting Sid and this great program.”

BEHIND THE BENCH WITH COACH DAN TIPS FOR YOUTH HOCKEY PLAYERS

SKATE, SKATE, SKATE No matter what level you are playing, skating is everything when it comes to hockey. However, skating isn’t just about being able to move backwards or forwards. Change of direction is critical when your team is on the transition from defense to offense, or vice versa. That makes being able stop, turn or pivot on a dime and quickly accelerate out of a start position as much a key to being a good skater as straight-ahead speed. Work hard to improve your skating when you can!

THE IMPORTANCE OF PASSING Pay attention to your passing. Nothing moves the puck up ice quicker than a tape-to-tape pass. A good passing team is able to maintain possession of the puck for long stretches, putting itself in position to generate more offense. What separates the great passers from the good ones is not only are they able to deliver the puck to a teammate when he or she is wide open, but they are able to use the boards and make area passes to teammates in traffic. “Practice perfect passing.”

GET TO THE NET Everybody has probably heard the saying ‘good things happen when you go to the net.’ There is a good reason for that — everything happens there. When you have a chance to shoot, get the puck on net. You also have to make sure that you physically go to the net so that way you are there for tips, rebounds and screens — all plays that lead directly to goals.

WORK HARD AND HAVE FUN We all want to be the best players we can be and help our team win each time we step on the ice. The easiest way to achieve this — WORK HARD EVERY TIME you step on the ice because work ethic is a huge key to being a successful hockey player. Just as important as working hard is ENJOYING THE GAME. Hockey is just that — a game — which means it is something we do to entertain ourselves. When you are having fun on the ice, chances are good that you are playing your best.

PITTSBURGH BECOMING A HOCKEY HOTBED

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania might not have a fancy nickname like ‘Hockeytown’, nor is it located in “The State of Hockey” — which is one of Minnesota’s unofficial nicknames for those of you scoring at home — but over the last decade, the ‘Steel City’ has cemented its status as one of the rising hotbeds of the hockey universe. Less than a decade ago, that statement would have been nearly impossible to believe. As the sweltering summer heat swept through our region in 2005, the NHL was in the final stages of 2005 NHL DRAFT wrapping up a lockout that cost the league the entire ’04-05 campaign. Locally, the Penguins were coming off a NHL-worst 58-point season in the year preceding the lockout, and local amateur hockey numbers were in sharp decline. Those fortunes changed with the fortuitous bounce of a ping-pong ball on July 22, 2005 — a stoke of luck that delivered wonderkid Sidney Crosby to the black-and-gold. In the blink of an eye, Evgeni Malkin joined the fold and the duo quickly transformed an up-andcoming team into Stanley Cup champions by 2009. The on-ice and box office success achieved by the Penguins since the arrival of Crosby and Malkin has increased hockey’s profile in Pittsburgh tenfold. Before Crosby’s debut in October 2005, Pittsburgh didn’t have much of a presence within the hockey world outside of legendary Hall of Fame owner Mario Lemieux, who was winding down his illustrious career. Sure, Upper St. Clair native Ryan Malone was coming off an impressive 22-goal rookie campaign with his hometown team, RYAN MALONE and Plum’s R.J. Umberger was set to make

make an NHL roster for the first time with the cross-state rival Philadelphia Flyers. But at the time, despite the talents each displayed, both seemed more like exceptions rather than trendsetters. While Malone, who helped the Penguins reach the Cup Final in ’08 before departing to the Tampa Bay Lightning, R.J. UMBERGER and Umberger continue to produce annually on hockey’s grandest stage, the next generation of Pittsburgh-born and trained players continues to make their mark on the hockey world. The dramatic improvement of the Pittsburgh amateur hockey pipeline was showcased at the 2011 NHL Draft in St. Paul, Minnesota, when four of the first 64 selections — J.T. Miller (NY Rangers, 1st round, 15th overall); John Gibson (Anaheim; 2nd round; 39th overall); Brandon Saad (Chicago, 2nd round, 43rd overall); and Vince Trocheck (Florida; 3rd round; 64th overall) — each grew up playing their youth hockey within the local amateur hockey ranks. With his selection at No. 15 overall, Miller became the highest-drafted player ever from the Pittsburgh region, edging out Umberger, who was taken 16th overall by Vancouver in 2001. Gibson was the second goaltender taken in the ’11 draft. Saad, who slipped a bit on draft day after being considered a top-five talent earlier that year, became the first of the quartet to reach the NHL when he made the Blackhawks’ ’1112 opening-night roster. He appeared in two regular-season and two playoff contests with BRANDON SAAD the Hawks, while in between starring for the Saginaw Spirit of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). As good as Saad and Gibson were last year — and First and Third-Team All-OHL honors, respectively, indicate both enjoyed fine seasons — neither was the best Pittsburgh-born player in the OHL.

That honor went to London Knights goaltender — and Wexford native — Michael Houser, who like the four players drafted in ’11 is an alum of the Pittsburgh Hornets ‘AAA’ program. Houser put together one of the finest junior seasons ever while leading the Knights to an OHL playoff championship and a runner-up finish at the Memorial Cup. Houser, who signed an entry-level contract with the Florida Panthers organization during the summer, was named the Canadian Hockey League’s ‘Goaltender of the Year’, won the OHL’s ‘Goaltender of the Year’ award and he became just the third American to win the OHL Most Outstanding Player award after posting a 46-15-0-1 record, 2.47 goals-against average and a .925 save percentage. His 46 wins tied the OHL record. Although Team USA had a disappointing showing at the 2012 World Junior Championship, it is impressive to note that of the 23 players who comprised the Americans’ roster, four (17%) hailed from Western Pennsylvania — Saad, Miller, Gibson and defenseman Stephen Johns, a defenseman from the University of Notre Dame who was selected by Chicago in the second round (60th overall) of the 2010 NHL Draft. This April, the 2013 Frozen Four — college hockey’s version of March Madness — will come to CONSOL Energy Center. If recent Frozen Fours are any indication, there is a good chance somebody from the 412 or 724 area code will factor heavily into determining a champion. That’s because each of the last three winners — Boston College in 2012 and ’10, and Minnesota-Duluth in ’11 — have been buoyed by local contributors. Leading the charge for Boston College at the ’12 Frozen Four was a pair of Mt. Lebanon Blue Devil alums — starting netminder Parker Milner and defenseman Patrick Wey. On their way to leading the Eagles to the title, both players were named to the Northeast Regional All-Tournament Team. Wey, who was drafted by the Washington Capitals in the fourth round (115th overall) of the 2009 NHL Draft, and Milner also played continued on page 183

smaller roles on Boston College’s ’10 championship squad. In between BC’s victories, Plum native Kenny Reiter helped backstop the University of Minnesota-Duluth to a Frozen Four championship over Michigan in ’11 — meaning the winning netminder from the past two national champions has come from Pittsburgh. Young players across our area from mites to high school players to stars at the college and junior level strive each day to become permanent NHL fixtures like Malone and Umberger. Dylan Reese, Mike Weber and Matt Bartkowski are three young defensemen with a sprinkle of NHL experience who appear poised to make that leap in the coming years. The elder statesman of the group is Reese, who like Malone hails from Upper St. Clair and is joining his hometown team this season. Prior to signing with Pittsburgh during the offseason, Reese has played a combined 74 NHL games with the New York Islanders over the past three seasons. Cranberry native Weber has the most experience of the three, suiting up for 132 games with the Buffalo Sabres entering the ’12-13 campaign. A punishing defender, Weber is probably most notorious to fans in these parts for not being DYLAN REESE afraid to mix it up physically with Crosby and Malkin in recent matchups against them. Bartkowski made the opening-night roster for the then-defending Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins last season. The previous spring, he participated in Boston’s march to the Cup as a member of the team’s taxi squad. Ironically, each of Bartkowski’s first three NHL games during the ’10-11 season came at CONSOL Energy Center. As you can see, hockey is alive and well in Pittsburgh at all levels — and that’s without us mentioning the vastly-improved Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League (PIHL) and the numerous players slated to join the college and junior ranks this coming season. Thanks to the on-ice success of the Penguins translating throughout the local community to children of all ages, hockey is only going to continue growing in these parts well into the future.

ICEBURGH A delight for children of all ages, Iceburgh — the official mascot of the Pittsburgh Penguins not only provides fans with exciting game entertainment but this large, energetic bird can also be seen at a multitude of community events and elementary schools throughout the greater Pittsburgh area. Iceburgh arrived on the scene in 1992 and is a staple at all team events. During Penguins’ home games, fans most definitely notice the antics of Iceburgh leading sections of fans in cheers, greeting young children on the concourse or displaying his athleticism on-ice between periods. In 1995, Iceburgh made his Hollywood debut, starring alongside Jean Claude Van Damme in the motion picture “Sudden Death.” He has gained both national and international exposure through film, TV and a variety of personal appearances. Iceburgh wasted no time getting acquainted with his new home at CONSOL Energy Center in September of 2010. You can find Iceburgh sliding down stair banisters, dancing in the stands and tossing t-shirts to fans. Iceburgh has performed in Russia and Japan, was featured in the opening of ESPN’s SportsCenter and recently performed in front of a record crowd of over 68,000 at Heinz Field for the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic. He is also regularly featured on in-game videos and has appeared in advertisements and television promos on ROOT Sports. In addition to his annual trek to the NHL All-Star Game, Iceburgh makes annual appearances at the Mascot Olympics held in Orlando, FL. If you would like to request an Iceburgh appearance at your next event, please complete the online form by visiting the community section of pittsburghpenguins.com.

YOUTH HOCKEY UPDATE

PITTSBURGH PENGUINS ELITE UPDATE By Brian Zagorac

The Pittsburgh Penguins and Dick’s Sporting Goods have teamed up to create a new AAA hockey program in the Pittsburgh area — The Pittsburgh Penguins Elite. With players spanning the ages of 8-19, the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite features 13 teams (eight boys and five girls) playing at the highest level of competition available. The Pittsburgh Penguins Elite compete in the Tier I Elite Hockey League that includes the Philadelphia Junior Flyers, the Buffalo Junior Sabres, the DC Capitals, the Dallas AAA Stars, the Phoenix Junior Coyotes and the Los Angeles Junior Kings, among others. The eight boys’ teams currently play in the following age groups: Midget (1994, 1995, 1996 and 1997 birth years); Bantam (1998 and 1999), Pee Wee (2000 and 2001) and Squirt (2002 and 2003). The five girls’ teams are 19-and-under, 16-and-under, 14-and-under, 12-and-under and 10-and-under. While the National Hockey League was absent, these skilled teams helped fill the void for great hockey in Pittsburgh. Over the first half of the season, the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite teams earned an average national ranking of 16, with the ’03 boys team being ranked as high as third in the country. The boys’ and girls’ programs have represented Pittsburgh well at several national tournaments and showcases earlier this season. The 12-and-under girls’ team won the 2012 Manon Rheaume Invitational Tournament in November, as well as

the Ignite the Ice Tournament in Cleveland for the second year in a row. The 10-and-under girls’ team emerged victorious in the championship game of the 3rd Annual Etobicoke Dolphins Pink the Rink Tournament in Etobicoke, Ontario. The 14-and-under girls’ teams became the first U.S.-based team to win the prestigious Stoney Creek Showcase at the Bantam AA level in Canada. For the boys’ teams, the Bantam Minor squad retained their trophy at the Patriots Cup Challenge in Newark, New Jersey, becoming the first ever back-to-back champions. Over Labor Day weekend, the 2001 Pee Wee Minor team took first place at the Maryland Super Series. In addition to their on-ice success, the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite presented by Dick’s Sporting Goods were also active in the community. The boys’ Pee Wee Major team helped serve dinner to 75-plus guests at Luma’s Restaurant in Aspinwall to help raise money for the Children’s Hospital Free Care Fund. The boys’ Bantam Minor team participated in a service project to benefit recently deployed soldiers. The team assembled around 100 care packagers in total, which will be sent to the 171st Air Refueling Wing of the Pennsylvania Air National Guard. Lastly, the Squirt Minor boys’ team helped the Penguins Front Office and the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank distribute Thanksgiving fixings to residents of Pittsburgh’s Hill District in November.

PENS PROFILE

JAMES NEAL By: Mark Madden

MADDEN

Winger James Neal faces plenty of battles during NHL games. But some of his fiercest wars may be waged during off-season workouts. Neal’s trainer is Gary Roberts, ex-Penguin and fellow product of Whitby, Ontario. You remember Roberts. He’s a pretty intense fellow. “When your strength coach is battling you in the gym, it’s pretty fun,” said Neal. “You need that atmosphere. We train to get stronger, but also to get more explosive. The game’s a speed game, and we do everything we can to get quicker.” So far, so good. Neal certainly exploded last campaign, netting 40 goals to top his previous season high by 13. Neal tacked on 41 assists, another career best, and the result was a berth on the NHL’s First All-Star Team. Neal scored just once in 20 games to finish the 2010-11 campaign after the Penguins acquired him from Dallas on Feb. 21, 2011. But last season saw Evgeni Malkin return from injury to center Neal, and the result was incendiary. “I came to Pittsburgh and had a tough start,” said Neal, 25. “It was just a matter of feeling comfortable here, and having Geno back was big for me. “Getting off to a good start [9 goals in 12 games]

helped me a lot. I got my confidence back, and I could show what I knew I could do. Everything was firing.” If any teammate outperformed Neal, it was Malkin, NHL scoring champ and MVP. “Everyone knows what Geno can do and how special a player he is,” Neal said. “He’s obviously got that scoring touch. But at the same time, he sees you all over the ice. The biggest thing I noticed playing with Geno is when you don’t think he sees you, he does. You’ve always got to be ready to shoot the puck.” Neal is. But it took him a while to develop his release and stroke, now among the purest and quickest in hockey. Neal had 329 shots on goal last campaign, second-most in the NHL. Malkin led the league with 339 shots on target. “I never really had a good shot growing up,” said the 6-foot-2, 208-pounder. “When I started going to camp with Dallas, that was the biggest thing I saw: How fast and how hard and how quick the guys could shoot the puck. They could score from anywhere on the ice. “That’s when I really started focusing on my shot. Tweaking my stick and my curve, things like that, so I could get my shot off quicker. Obviously, it helped.” continued on page 203

Neal has made one huge adjustment since joining the Penguins: A left-handed shot, he moved cross-ice from left wing to right wing. “I played left wing my whole life growing up and then in Dallas when I played for the Stars,” Neal said. “But with the way we play here, the system, it was definitely a lot easier than expected to go over to the right wing. “For me, being a lefthanded shot on the offside wing, it gives me the ability to shoot the puck more, and that’s what I like to do.” Thanks to Roberts and thanks to his own dedication, Neal feels ready to shake off the lockout’s idle time: “It’s obviously been a long time since we played. But you’ve got to do everything you can to stay ready, and be ready to go. “It’s been a long few months, that’s for sure. It’s good to be back in Pittsburgh, and I’m excited for the upcoming season. “We’re healthy now, and [Sidney Crosby is] back. It’s a short season, so we’ve got to come out and get off to a good start. We’ve definitely got the talent to do it. We’re excited to get started. The way it ended last year at Philadelphia definitely left a bad taste in our mouths.”

BRANDON SUTTER

PRISU#SutterQA

@thepenspond You were born in New York, but you moved to Canada, how old were you when you started to play hockey? #SutterQA “Probably when I was about five. I was born in New York, only lived there for about a year, moved to Chicago for a bit and then we were back home in Canada every summer in between. I moved there permanently when I was eight. I grew up in Canada.” @Letangelland58 What was the first thought that came to your mind when you realized you were playing with Sidney Crosby? #SutterQA “I was pretty excited obviously. At first it was a bit of a shock, but after a few days it set in. Especially once I talked to him on the phone and some of the other guys, it was pretty exciting. Obviously it’s a good team so that’ll make it fun.” @jamieleem Have you had a Primanti’s sandwich yet? #SutterQA “I have, we were in here on the road last year, we came in the afternoon, and a few of us walked over for a snack and it was pretty good. I was pretty impressed with it. I might start trying to make those at home but it probably won’t be the same.” @stapler_87 Do you still have the big stuffed animal shark? #SutterQA “I don’t anymore. A guy I played with in Carolina, Andrew Alberts, had it in his apartment. He got traded and he had this big stuffed animal he won at the state fair. He left it for me and then I left it for Jeff Skinner. Hopefully he’s taking care of it now.” @ohzoe What are you looking forward to most about your experience in Pittsburgh? #SutterQA “I just want to get playing. I want to get back playing and I think once you do that, you get to know the guys so much better. Once we get that going, it’ll feel just like home around here. So far the facilities are great and the team’s great. All positive things.”

REMEMBERING WHERE WE’VE BEEN By: Mike Prisuta

They’re at last looking ahead again, but they also haven’t forgotten where they’ve been. How could they? When they last began a journey together it proved to be an agonizingly short trip. And while the ice of the new season remains fresh, so does the disappointment of the Penguins’ first-round “IT’S A NEW YEAR, elimination from the postseason last spring WE GOTTA PUT IT at the hands of the BEHIND US...” Philadelphia Flyers. ~ Ray Shero General Manager Ray Shero assessed the Penguins’ six-game exit as “bitter,” but also maintained that as players and coaches and as an organization the Penguins “gotta move on.” “It’s a new year,” Shero insisted. “We gotta put it behind us and, to me, forget about it.” To others in the organization that’s simply not possible. Not yet, at least, and maybe not ever. But rather than succumb to the disappointment and dejection, a significant contingent of Penguins seem intent on turning last season’s frustration into this season’s motivation. Consider them confident, but also with an edge. “It definitely stays with me,” head coach Dan Bylsma said prior to the opening of training camp, recalling a series in which the Penguins lost the first two games on home ice and dug a three-games-to-none hole on the way to the golf course. “I don’t think it’s ever not going to sit well with me,” Bylsma continued. “It’s never going to be put away. out of the mind. It’s a tough one considering our expectations, considering our team. “It’s a tough one to look at and not have it leave a mark. It certainly will be a part of our preparation, something we learn from and take from as we go into this year. “It pushed us in different areas throughout the summer.” The push now, the Penguins’ focus and the Penguins’ objective, is the same as it was then. That much hasn’t changed. “Right from the first day of training camp that’s the opening meeting every single year,” defenseman Brooks Orpik said. “That’s what Ray Shero preaches to everybody — that the Stanley Cup is the ultimate goal and probably the only goal. Even losing in the Stanley Cup Final is a disappointing season for the Chris Kunitz is among the organization, and members of the team who are obviously the way we went out last year, using last year’s season as a motivating factor this year. against probably our biggest rival, was the ultimate disappointment, I guess, besides not making the playoffs. “Hopefully, it has a bitter taste still around for the guys that were here last year. I’m sure it’ll still be fresh in our minds.” It is for winger Chris Kunitz. “I think you still think about it,” he said. “It’s probably one of those things you’ll never get rid of.” Not because they’ll be dwelling on it but because they’ll be drawing determination from it, and because the Penguins intend to be stronger the next time because of what happened the last time against Philadelphia.

“THE A little smarter, a little more aware, a little better prepared and a little hungrier. THE GOAL But they’re also well aware, perhaps now FOR OUR more than ever, that they’ll have to take it TEAM when the time comes. “It doesn’t matter how you’re doing AND WILL in the regular season, when the playoffs CONTINUE start it’s a new season,” assistant coach Tony Granato said. “We might have a TO BE...” little different mental focus going into the ~ Marc-Andre Fleury playoffs this year.” Added assistant coach Todd Reirden: “I would say it’s not a clean slate. Our guys were disappointed with how things finished last year. This delay in starting the season has made it even more difficult and will definitely provide us with a little more desire to get back to where we need to be. “The Stanley Cup is always the goal for our team and will continue to be with the type of players we have and the expectation we have as an organization.” There’s a great deal of hockey to be played between here and there. But as he begins to play it goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury has seemingly achieved a balanced perspective as it relates to how last season ended. “I forgot about the games but not about what happened,” he said. For the 2013 Penguins that’s about as appropriate a response as any.
