GAME NOTES By: Bob Grove
THE SERIES The Penguins and New Jersey Devils play today for the first time this season, the first of four afternoon home games for Pittsburgh in 2012-13. Including today, three of the last four meetings between the teams has come in the afternoon . . . The Penguins have won each of their last two games against the Devils and five of the last eight, and they have lost the season series to New Jersey only once in EVGENI MALKIN the past five campaigns (0-6-0 in 2009-10). . . The teams split their six games last season, the Penguins going 2-1-0 at home and 1-2-0 on the road. Evgeni Malkin (4+2) and Chris Kunitz (3+3) shared the scoring lead against New Jersey, while the Devils’ Ilya Kovalchuk (4+7) led all scorers in the series . . . Kovalchuk has 24 goals and 48 points in 42 career games against Pittsburgh, a 1.14 points-per-game average that is the sixth-best among active players against the Penguins. . . The Devils have managed more than 27 shots only once in their last eight games against Pittsburgh, and they have scored more than three goals only once in their last 12 meetings against us. . . The Penguins have CHRIS KUNITZ continued on page 8

points in eight of those 12 games against New Jersey (7-4-1) . . . Pittsburgh has killed seven consecutive New Jersey power plays and 20 of the last 22. . . The Penguins are 5-1-0 in their last six home games against the Devils and have allowed only nine goals in those six. . . The next meeting between the teams is one week from today in New Jersey yet another afternoon game — and their next meeting here in Pittsburgh is the following night, Feb. 10. . . Pittsburgh is 89-94-17-8 all-time against the Devils, including 51-44-4-4 at home.
THE PENGUINS There’s no rest for the Penguins, who haven’t had two straight days off since beating the Rangers in New York on Jan. 20. They will travel to Washington tomorrow for a 12:30 game against the Capitals in what has become something of a tradition for the Penguins. It will mark the 16th time Pittsburgh plays on Super Sunday, and it will be the sixth time that game has been played on the road against the Capitals. Pittsburgh is 4-8-2 with one tie in the previous 15 games on Super Sunday, including 1-2-1 with one tie in Washington. It also marks the fourth straight season the Penguins have played on Super Sunday, and Pittsburgh will be looking to snap a five-game losing streak on that day. . . The Penguins play on Long Island on Tuesday and return home to host the Capitals on Feb. 7. . . When Sidney Crosby set up Evgeni Malkin’s power-play goal in a home-opening loss to Toronto on Jan. 23, it marked the 190th time they had figured in on the same goal — and 100th time on the power play. . . The Penguins snapped a two-game losing streak with a 2-1 shootout victory in Ottawa

last Sunday. James Neal’s fourth goal of the season gave the Penguins an early lead, and after the Senators tied it up, Neal, Crosby and Malkin all scored in the shootout. That gave Malkin 16 career shootout goals, tying him with Kris Letang for second place on the Penguins’ all-time list behind Crosby (22). It marked only the second time in Penguins history they went three-for-three in a shootout, the first time coming here against Carolina on Oct. 19, 2007. . . Malkin’s assist against the Senators was his 324th, tying him with Rick Kehoe for seventh place on the all-time Pittsburgh list.

New Jersey, which visited Boston on Tuesday, hosted the New York Islanders on Thursday. The Devils will play on Long Island tomorrow afternoon and then enjoy a three-game homestand with games against the Rangers and Lightning before the Penguins close it out on Feb. 9. . . New Jersey got off to a great start by allowing just three goals in its opening three games while beating the Islanders, Flyers and Capitals. Then last Sunday at Montreal, with New Jersey trying to start a season 4-0 for the first time since 1995, the Devils rallied from a 3-1 deficit in the third period only to lose in overtime, 4-3, on an Andrei Markov power-play goal. . . The Devils were the ones delivering the big late goal in the previous game, a 3-2 home overtime win over Washington, thanks to Kovalchuk’s OT strike. . . Patrick Elias had a goal and two assists in the loss to the PATRICK ELIAS Canadiens, enabling him to reach the 900-point mark for his career.

The First Ever ES Hybrid. 40 MPG EPA-Estimated.* At first glance, it’s a bold statement of style. Read between the lines, however, and you’ll discover that the first ever ES Hybrid doesn’t merely make a statement, it backs it up. Take, for instance, the sleek, sculpted appearance. It’s not just for show—the aerodynamic design boosts fuel efficiency up to an EPA-estimated 40 MPG.* And while the hand-stitched panels and precision-crafted interior make a stunning first impression, the available next-generation technologies in connectivity elevate the conversation. Ultimately, the 2013 ES Hybrid not only sends a message—it’s sure to build a following.

COMMUNITY UPDATE PENGUINS FOUNDATION’S WINE TASTING GALA A GREAT SUCCESS By: Joe Belechak
The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation provided its supporters a taste of the good life, on January 14 by hosting its Second Annual VIP Dinner & Wine Tasting Gala presented by Nemacolin Woodlands Resort and 84 Lumber. Hosted by the Penguins coaching staff, the evening paid tribute to California wines while raising funds for the Penguins Foundation’s efforts in the community. Proceeds from this event will help further the Foundation’s goal to actively promote physical well-being, encourage teamwork, stress the value of education and provide essential life skills to young people in our community through youth hockey and other activities.

THE WILDLY SUCCESSFUL EVENT RAISED MORE THAN
$100,000
The wine was exquisite, but the cuisine offered to guests was truly a feast for the senses. The night began in the Lexus Club of CONSOL Energy Center with a four-course meal and each selection of food was complimented with the perfect wine. As a courtesy, wine representatives were on hand to explain the pairings and answer questions. At the conclusion of dinner, guests progressed to the lobby of the Trib Total Media gate where gourmet hors d’oeuvres and an assortment of fifty California wines, each distinct and very much its own, tempted their palates. A jazz trio livened up the space with music that encouraged guests to dance or sing along. Although the focus was on wine, the Foundation’s live and silent auctions nearly stole the show. Unique experiences, autographed memorabilia, jewelry, KAREN & RAY SHERO and a selection of tickets that simply cannot be purchased anywhere else were only a few of the items offered. The wildly successful event raised more than $100,000 and proceeds will benefit Project Power Play, PensFIT, HEADS UP Pittsburgh and other programs that encourage youth to grow and excel.

The two goals for van Riemsdyk marked the sixth time in his career that he’d potted a pair. That happened for the first time on Jan. 7, 2010 when van Riemsdyk was playing for the Philadelphia Flyers against the Penguins.

MARIO LEMIEUX CO-OWNER/CHAIRMAN
Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in National Hockey League history, is in his 14th season as co-owner and chairman of the board of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice — including six straight playoff appearances and a Stanley Cup championship in 2009. The Penguins entered the 2012-13 season having sold out 254 straight games while setting new standards for local television ratings, merchandise sales, website traffic and social media. Lemieux and Burkle were driving forces in the quest for a new multi-purpose arena for Pittsburgh and were proud to open CONSOL Energy Center in August, 2010. The sparkling facility is rated one of the top facilities in North America and hosted such national events as the 2012 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament Second and Third Rounds and the 2012 NHL Draft. Known as “Le Magnifique,” Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. An immaculately gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranks eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org. The Penguins ownership group, local labor organizations and members of the Pittsburgh business community honored Lemieux in 2012 with a statue to commemorate his career and contributions to the city and the region. Appropriately named “Le Magnifique,” the statue, by nationally-acclaimed sculptor Bruce Wolfe, can be seen outside of the Trib Total Media gate at CONSOL Energy Center. Mario and his wife, Nathalie, and their four children live in Sewickley.

RON BURKLE CO-OWNER
Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 14th season as co-owner of the Penguins. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they have become one of the outstanding ownership tandems in professional sports. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his essential role in negotiations for a new arena. CONSOL Energy Center is considered one of the finest indoor facilities in North America and has attracted many national-level events to Pittsburgh — including the 2013 NCAA Frozen Four, coming in April, 2013. Under the leadership of Lemieux and Burkle, the Penguins have sold out every game for five-plus seasons and consistently rank among the most fan-friendly and community-minded teams in the NHL and all of pro sports. The Penguins reached back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals in 2008 and 2009 and won the Cup in ‘09. The team’s solid foundation of ownership has enabled hockey management to spend to the salary cap, sign many of the team’s young core players to long-term contracts and put a competitive team on the ice year after year — leading to six straight playoff berths. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is Co-Chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League, Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy and AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA). Ron was the Founder and Chairman of the Ralph’s/Food4Less Foundation and the Fred Meyer Inc. Foundation. He was a member of the board of Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: OXY), KB Home (NYSE: KBH), Kaufman & Broad S.A. (Euronext: KOF), Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO), the J. Paul Getty Trust, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Music Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. He has received numerous honors and awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year, the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year Award and the APLA Commitment to Life Award.

DAVID MOREHOUSE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER & PRESIDENT
David Morehouse has established himself as one of the most dynamic senior executives in the National Hockey League. Since being named President of the Penguins in April, 2007, Morehouse has reshaped the team’s image and strategic vision with an emphasis on branding, fan relations, youth marketing, community interaction, corporate outreach and innovative technology. He was given the additional responsibilities of Chief Executive Officer in September, 2010, and oversees every aspect of the Penguins’ operations, reporting directly to co-owners Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle. Under Morehouse’s leadership, the Penguins quickly developed a new commitment to innovative fan outreach — including an annual event where players personally deliver season tickets to fans’ homes and a special preseason game where all 18,000 tickets are distributed free to local youth. His emphasis on branding and marketing, coupled with the team’s success on the ice, enabled the Penguins to lead all U.S.-based NHL and NBA teams in local television ratings during the 2011-12 season. Keeping with that trend, the Penguins led all U.S.-based NHL teams in website traffic and Twitter followers while continually setting new standards for merchandise sales. Youth hockey participation also is on the rise — in part because of Morehouse’s support for efforts such as Sidney Crosby’s Little Penguins Learn to Play program, which distributes free head-to-toe hockey equipment, including skates, to 1,000 kids aged 5-7 each year. The Penguins have sold out every game for five-plus seasons, a streak that had reached 254 games before the start of the 2012-13 season. They also have sold out all suites for four-plus seasons and actually increased capacity at CONSOL Energy Center by 300 seats (to 18,387) after the arena’s inaugural season in 2010-11. Morehouse himself was named 2011 CEO Communicator of the Year by the Pittsburgh Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America. The Pittsburgh native joined the Penguins in 2004 as Senior Consultant on the new arena project following a career in national politics that included stints at the White House, Pentagon and on Capitol Hill as well as key roles in two Presidential campaigns. Morehouse attended the Community College of Allegheny County and Duquesne University and received a master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. He and his wife, Vanessa, have four children and live in Sewickley Heights.

RAY SHERO
EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT & GENERAL MANAGER
Ray Shero has established himself as one of the premiere general managers in the National Hockey League. Shero, 50, who is in his seventh season as Pittsburgh’s GM, has transformed a franchise that missed the playoffs from 2002-06 into a perennial championship contender, including two Stanley Cup Final appearances and a Cup title in 2009. Shero, who was named general manager of the Penguins in May, 2006, arrived in Pittsburgh with a firm, forward-thinking managerial style that incorporates cutting-edge methods of technology, player relations, prospect development and salary cap management. Shero’s efforts have secured the Penguins’ long-term stability and competiveness with his masterful maneuvering of the salary cap — the Penguins ranked No. 3 out of 122 pro sports franchises in spending efficiency according to Bloomberg Business Week — and multi-year signings of the team’s core players: Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Marc-Andre Fleury, Brooks Orpik, Kris Letang, and James Neal. Shero’s riskiest and boldest move paid off with hockey’s highest prize. With the Penguins needing a jolt of life late in the 2008-09 season, he promoted Wilkes-Barre/Scranton head coach Dan Bylsma to Pittsburgh. Bylsma led a turnaround that resulted in a championship in ’09. Bylsma also won the Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s “Most Outstanding Coach” in ’11. Shero cut his administrative teeth during 14 seasons as an assistant general manager with the Nashville Predators (1998-06) and Ottawa Senators (1993-98). Shero, a native of St. Paul, Minn., was raised in a hockey family filled with tradition. His father, Fred Shero, played for the NY Rangers (1947-50) and coached the Philadelphia Flyers for seven seasons. Fred won back-to-back Stanley Cups as head coach of the Flyers in 1974 and ’75 and also served as general manager of the Rangers for three years (1978-80), leading the club to the Stanley Cup Final in 1979. The Sheros are one of the few father-son tandems to have their names on the Cup. Shero played college hockey at St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y. He twice led the team in scoring and was named team captain on two occasions. He graduated in 1984 as one of the top-10 scorers in school history. Shero, who was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in the 1982 NHL Draft, spent seven years as a player agent before making the transition to the front office. Shero is actively involved with USA Hockey and is a member of the USA Hockey National Team Advisory Group. Ray and his wife, Karen, and their two sons reside in Upper St. Clair.

JASON BOTTERILL ASSISTANT GENERAL MANAGER
Jason Botterill is in his fourth full season as assistant general manager after being promoted to his current position in May, 2009, by GM Ray Shero. As assistant GM, Botterill works closely with Shero on all hockey-related matters, including scouting, player development and contract negotiations. He also manages hockey operations and acts as GM for the club’s top minor-league affiliate, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League. Prior to his promotion, Botterill, 36, worked two seasons as director of hockey administration with the Penguins; his responsibilities included salary cap management, professional and amateur scouting and overseeing prospect development. RULES OF THE GAME PRESENTED BY
BOARDING
BOARDING To check or push a defenseless opponent in such a manner that causes the opponent to hit or impact into the boards dangerously or violently.
T:8.5”
B:8.75”
S:8.5”
-
The player applying the check needs to ensure his opponent is not in a defenseless position and if so, must avoid contact.
-
The player with the puck needs to avoid placing himself in a dangerous and defenseless position.
-
Any unnecessary contact with a player playing the puck on an obvious “icing” or “off-sides” play that does not impact boards should be treated as “charging.”
DELAY OF GAME A player may be penalized when, in the opinion of the Referee, is delaying the game in any matter. (Normally six conditions) 1.) Player or goaltender intentionally shoots or throws the puck out
of the playing area.
2.) A defensive player or goaltender in the defensive zone shoots the
puck directly (without being deflected) over the glass.
3.) A player or goaltender intentionally knocks the net’s goalpost off
its moorings, which stops the play.
4.) The goaltender plays the puck out of the trapezoid behind the net. 5.) The goaltender freezes the puck rather than passing it to a team-
mate when no player on the opposing team is within sufficient distance to apply offensive pressure.
6.) Any skater other than the goaltender who uses their hands to
make the puck unplayable.

INTERFERENCE INTERFERENCE
BODY POSITION: Body position will be determined as the player skating in front of or beside his opponent, traveling in the same direction. - A player who is behind an opponent, who does not have the puck, may not use his stick, body or free hand in order to restrain his opponent. POSSESSION OF THE PUCK: The last player to touch the puck, other than the goaltenders, will be considered the player in possession. RESTRAIN: The actions of a player or goaltender who does not have body position, but instead uses illegal means to impede an opponent who is not in possession of the puck. PICK: The action of a player or goaltender who checks an opponent who is not in possession of the puck and is unaware of the impending check/hit. FREE HAND: When a free hand is used to hold, pull, tug, grab or physically restrain an opponent from moving freely, this must be penalized as holding.
STICK: A player who does not have body position on his opponent, who used his stick to impede or prevent his opponent from moving freely on the ice shall be assessed a hooking penalty.
OFF-SIDES Players of the attacking team must not precede the puck into the attacking zone. (Two determining factors) 1.) One of a player’s skates is not in contact with or behind the blue
line of the attacking zone before the puck enters that zone.
2.) The puck must completely cross the edge of the blue line nearest
the attacking zone to be considered inside the attacking zone.
The act of using the stick in a manner that enables a player to restrain an opponent.
-
When a player is checking another in such a way that there is only stick-tostick contact, such action is not to be penalized as hooking.

TOURS AVAILABLE
GET A BEHIND THE SCENES LOOK AT THE ARENA
Tickets for CONSOL Energy Center’s tours draw visitors of all ages and interests who want to see more of the Pittsburgh Penguins’ home and the city’s newest, greenest entertainment facility. CONSOL Energy Center tours, presented by Bayer MaterialScience, walk visitors through areas of the building that fans might not get to see when they attend a game or other entertainment. For example, on the PNC Legends Level more than $1 million worth of artwork, done in collaboration with James Gallery of Pittsburgh, is on display. It includes large wall murals, 10 PNC Legendary Moments shadowboxes and photography featuring Pittsburgh Penguins players. Tours provide guests with an exclusive look at all seating levels of CONSOL Energy Center, as well as the First Niagara, Captain Morgan and Lexus clubs, a Canadian Party Suite, select locker rooms and more. Based on events taking place in the building, Suite 66 and the Visitor’s Hockey Locker Room are shown when available. These areas are of interest to many people but not ordinarily accessible to most visitors. One of the other features included in the tours is the centerpiece PensVision, measuring nearly 25’ wide and 15’ high and 70,000 pounds. With true High Definition resolution along with enhanced contrast and brightness, the screens redefine the arena video experience for Penguins fans. Just below the center-ice scoreboard there are two, 360 degree LED ribbon boards. These are a first of their kind in Pittsburgh. The scoreboard and LED ribbon boards combined cost a total of $8 million. Throughout CONSOL Energy Center there are over 800 flat-screen TVs. They are used to display messages to fans, keep fans in the game while away from

their seats along with displaying the menus at the concession stands throughout the arena. On the FedEx Level, just above the American Eagle Gate, sits the World’s Largest Goalie Mask. The idea of James Gallery, it was painted by renowned artist David Arrigo, who has painted masks for several NHL goaltenders. The display is presented by Bayer MaterialScience and features “The Science of Sport” kiosks showcasing the science behind sports including how a hockey puck moves on ice. The Goalie mask, which is 9.5 feet high by 8 feet wide by 12 feet deep and weighs in between 700-800 lbs, features the celebration of fans and players after a goal is scored. The materials used to construct the mask are protected by a high-performance polyurethane coating containing raw materials produced by Bayer MaterialScience. This basecoat serves as the foundation for both the white background and the artist’s colors. A final polyurethane clearcoat over the artwork provides additional protection and durability. Also part of the tour is the Highmark Kid’s Zone — an interactive play area that offers both educational and recreational activities for children of all ages. The Highmark Kid’s Zone includes four Wii consoles, videos and trivia, faceoff and puck games, along with a replica of the famous Sidney Crosby dryer. Located further down the hall is the Highmark Wall of Champions. The Highmark Wall of Champions is two stories tall and contains the official jerseys of all PIHL (Pittsburgh Interscholastic Hockey League) teams, regional high schools as well as select other amateur teams in the region. “The tour highlights the environmentally friendly components of the building which qualified CONSOL Energy Center to become the first NHL Arena to receive LEED Gold Certification,” says David Peart, Vice President, Pittsburgh Penguins. “The tours allow us to highlight our continuing efforts toward improving the environment, which are detailed on 12 different plaques located throughout the building,” says Mr. Peart. PITTSBURGH PENGUINS FOUNDATION
HEADS UP PITTSBURGH
KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE
In 2012, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation expanded the HEADS UP Pittsburgh free baseline concussion testing program to include youth athletes ages 10-14 in all sports. Since the program started in 2011, over 3,400 youth hockey players have been tested along with 1,500 athletes representing 12 other sports. The program originally began with youth hockey players only. Testing took place at UPMC Sports Medicine on the South Side, as well as at four Community College of Allegheny County locations — Boyce, North, South and West Hills Center. “Our original youth hockey testing program in 2011 was a tremendous success because it touched thousands of young players and created increased awareness about concussion safety,” said Dave Soltesz, president of the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation. “Based on our mission to actively promote physical well being among young people in the community, it was an easy decision to expand the program to other sports beyond hockey.” While athletes are being tested, their parents meet with UPMC Sports Medicine Concussion Program staff to learn about “HEADS UP Pittsburgh.” Certified athletic trainers from the UPMC Sports Concussion Program supervise the program and testing. JOIN THE RUSH!
TM
Introduced in the mid 1990’s, the American Eagle Student Rush Program is one of the most popular and well known marketing initiatives of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Designed to sell remaining game-day inventory, the American Eagle Student Rush program provides the Pittsburgh Penguins an opportunity to introduce new fans to the game of hockey at a discounted rate. Based upon the positive feedback the organization has received from current season ticket holders who were one-time Student Rush participants, the program has been successful in developing a long-term relationship with young, active Pittsburghers. During the 2012-13 season, at least 200 American Eagle Student Rush tickets will be made available for each regular season home game at CONSOL Energy Center. To avoid long waits outside during the winter months, the organization will host online pre-sales for most games. To receive pre-sale information, students can text RUSH to 32623 to register for the American Eagle Student Rush Mobile Club. Each pregame text includes the opportunity to win two free tickets to the next home game! In addition to the 200 tickets offered each game, several special Student Rush nights will be held. At least 500 student rush tickets will be available for these select games at the American Eagle Gate. Music, prizes and giveaways will also be provided courtesy of American Eagle Outfitters. For more information on the American Eagle Student Rush program and a schedule of upcoming Student Rush nights, scan the code at the top of the page or visit pittsburghpenguins.com/studentrushÂ

CROSBY ENTERS SEASON HEALTHY, MOTIVATED By Brooks Bratten
It seems like a decade ago that Sidney Crosby experienced a relatively injury-free season, but it is long overdue. Crosby is set to kickoff the new campaign with a clean bill of health, something that he has been craving. Crosby, now 25, is entering into a stretch that is the prime of most hockey players’ careers. For someone who has already captured a Stanley Cup, Olympic Gold Medal, NHL MVP, scoring champion and leading goal scorer among other accolades, it might not appear as if there’s too much left to accomplish. But that’s not how Crosby operates. The bar is set high heading into a shortened campaign, and Crosby is aware of the expectations for the organization. “We’re OK with that as far as handling the pressure and having to answer questions about it,” Crosby said. “We’re all realistic too and know that there’s a lot of teams in that conversation, and even more so this year than the other years with the way the season’s set up.” Crosby hasn’t had much time to shoulder that pressure over the past few years, however. Due to concussion and neck injuries, he was limited to just 22 regular season contests in 2011-12, and only skated in 41 the season prior. There’s no questioning whether or not continued on page 113

Crosby is in superior shape. He’s skated at Southpointe over the past few months with teammates, and the added opportunities have helped him to improve his conditioning. “I think you probably push yourself a little more off the ice coming into camp, but I’ve skated a lot longer than I ever have going into the start of a season, so it’s hard to gauge,” Crosby said. “I think the sooner you can get into games and get your feet wet, the faster it comes back. I’m just looking forward to getting started.” The differences between practices and games are immense though, and Crosby is anxious to get going at a high level once again. “With game shape, you’re never going to get that until you play games,” Crosby said. “It’ll be interesting to play that first game and see how it feels. We’re all going to work hard and try to make sure we get as close as we can to game shape. It’ll probably be a little bit challenging the first few games to get that conditioning, but once you get a few games under your belt it comes back quick.” The injuries that Crosby has dealt with over the past couple of years took their toll, both physically and emotionally. But, he’s taken things in stride, and is more than eager to get back on the ice in game situations and test himself. “I think it’s something I’ve been working as hard as I can to prepare for,” Crosby said. “You can’t really prepare for games until you play them, but I’ve done my best to try and prepare accordingly. Hopefully things will work out well.” Crosby isn’t alone in sharing that sentiment. His teammates are excited at the prospects of having a healthy captain back in the lineup on a consistent basis. continued on page 114

Goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury has played alongside No. 87 throughout his entire career. The netminder believes that Crosby has never been better. “He looks great,” Fleury said. “I think he’s healthy and going hard out there. During practice, he looks great, fast, strong. I’m looking forward to seeing him in action.” As with the rest of the organization, it hasn’t been easy for Fleury to watch Crosby go through the trials that he has over the past two seasons. The boost that a healthy Crosby adds is immeasurable. Fleury’s smile helped to confirm that fact. “[I’m] just happy for him. He’s a guy that loves the game so much and was away from it. Now, finally, everything seems to be on the right track for him.” Things are indeed on the right track for Crosby. Where the train that travels that track ends up in 2013 remains to be seen. It’s likely though that the ride will be one for the ages. Crosby is ready to put the setbacks behind him. As far as he’s concerned, that train has left the station.

PITTSBURGH PENGUINS FOUNDATION
PROJECT POWER PLAY Project Power Play represents a group of partners; The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, Highmark, the City of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County, who are focused on building 12 multi-sport dek hockey rinks to encourage physical activity and provide accessibility to hockey facilities for youth. The first two rinks in the City of Pittsburgh are located at Banksville Park on Crane Avenue and at Lewis Park in Hazelwood adjacent to the YMCA, both opened at the end of 2012. Over the next three years, 10 more rinks will be constructed as part of the $2.1 million project. Project Power Play funding comes from Highmark which is committing $1.5 million and the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation which is providing $600,000. Additional contributions come from the City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County and the local municipalities, which are providing land for the rinks, as well as maintenance, lighting and other support. Dave Soltesz, president of the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation says, “The Foundation’s mission includes creating opportunities for youth that stress physical fitness, teamwork and sportsmanship. The dek hockey rinks and related programs will serve youth in the region, fulfill the Foundation’s mission to encourage youth fitness, and help to make hockey a more accessible sport. These are the best dek hockey rinks anywhere,” Soltesz says. “You have to see it to believe it.” The facilities, 155’ x 75’, are multi-sport courts and each includes a premier dasherboard system like those used in the NHL, players’ benches, penalty box, scorer’s table, goals at each end, and start-up dek hockey equipment. Each facility will have nine access gates, including handicap access via the service gate. Black vinyl fences enclose each facility. Soltesz says, “We are proud of our sport. We are proud of our region, and we are proud to put these types of facilities in the communities.”

PITTSBURGH PENGUINS FOUNDATION
PensFIT
In a first-of-its-kind program, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation is providing free floor hockey equipment to more than 250 elementary and middle schools in Allegheny County. The program, known as PensFIT, got its start on Friday, November 9 when Penguins alum Phil Bourque delivered the first set of equipment to Neil Armstrong Middle School in Bethel Park. The equipment for each school retails at more than $1,000 and includes goals, sticks, stick bags, hockey balls, goalie equipment and a storage bag. In addition to providing student workbooks and instructional manuals, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation will offer a seminar at CONSOL Energy Center for the schools’ physical education teachers – hosted by the Penguins’ coaching staff and team alumni. PensFIT is designed as a three-year initiative to assist elementary schools in providing new opportunities for physical education classes. The long-term goal is to supply free equipment to 600 elementary and middle schools in 10 counties. Schools from surrounding counties will be added during the second year of the program. The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation has teamed up with corporate partner FedEx Ground on delivery of the equipment. FedEx Ground will provide shipping to the schools free of charge.

WILKES-BARRE/SCRANTON
PENGUINS
Joining the American Hockey League for its inaugural season in 1999-00, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins have established themselves as one the most successful franchises in the league. After posting a 23-43-9-5 record in its first season of play and missing the playoffs, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton enjoyed one of the biggest turnarounds in league history as the team made it to its first-ever Calder Cup Final appearance in 2001. Though they would fall to the Saint John Flames in six games, the Penguins would carry on a tradition of success both on and off the ice. In total, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton has appeared in the Calder Cup Final three times and reached the playoffs in 11 out of 13 seasons, including 10 consecutive postseason berths — tied for the longest active streak in the AHL. The 1999-00 season saw the Penguins sellout 26 games their inaugural season. The following year Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton set the league record by selling out the entire season (40-games) en route to a streak of 144 consecutive BRAD THIESSEN sellouts that still stands today as an AHL record. The AHL-affiliate to the Pittsburgh Penguins since its inception, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton has helped develop former draft picks such as Marc-Andre Fleury, Brooks Orpik, Tyler Kennedy and Joe Vitale. Ten former Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins lifted the Stanley Cup when Pittsburgh defeated Detroit in seven games in 2009. continued on page 150

The Penguins have also seen many of their coaches rise up the ranks with Dan Bylsma and Todd Reirden manning the bench in Pittsburgh, Michel Therrien in Montreal, Todd Richards in Columbus and Mike Yeo in Minnesota. The 2010-11 season marked one for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton history books. Under the guidance of first-year head coach John Hynes, the Penguins went 58-21-0-1 SIMON DESPRES to claim their first-ever Macgregor Kilpatrick Trophy as AHL regular-season champions. In the process, Hynes won the Louis A.R. Pieri Award as the AHL’s Outstanding Coach, while the team set records for wins in a season (58), points in a season ZAC SILL (117), and fewest losses in a season (21). Goaltender Brad Thiessen joined Dany Sabourin as the team’s second recipient of the Aldege “Baz” Bastien Memorial Award. Now in their 14th season of play, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins have amassed more wins (450) and points (987) than any other team in the league over the last ten years.

PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK PLAY-BY-PLAY ANNOUNCER
One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange is calling games in his 36th season with the Penguins, handling radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM “The X” and the Penguins Radio Network. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.

ATI – INVESTING IN PITTSBURGH’S FUTURE… Committed to Maintaining American Leadership in Manufacturing Mission-Critical Metallics® ATI is building an advanced Hot Rolling and Processing Facility (HRPF) in Brackenridge, PA. This project, just outside Pittsburgh, will be the most powerful hot rolling facility in the world for manufacturing nickel-based alloys, titanium, specialty alloys, zirconium and stainless steel sheet and plate. At a cost of $1.1 billion, the HRPF is among the largest industrial projects currently underway in the United States. When the HRPF is completed in 2014, ATI will have invested nearly $4.4 billion in new, advanced manufacturing capabilities and asset acquisitions since 2004. These investments have been in Western Pennsylvania, Utah, North Carolina, Ohio, Wisconsin, California, Oregon, Alabama and Massachusetts. ATI believes that Pittsburgh, Western Pennsylvania and the United States must be in the vanguard of global manufacturing and that the American worker can compete with anyone given the best products, tools and technologies.

The Pittsburgh Penguins Elite program presented by Dick’s Sporting Goods will feature 13 teams playing at the AAA level — eight boys teams and five girls teams. “Part of our overall vision of supporting local youth hockey has been to create an elite Pittsburgh Penguins youth program that would attract top players in different age groups, offering an excellent environment to develop skills, teach teamwork and compete against top teams from other areas,” said David Morehouse, CEO and President of the Pittsburgh Penguins. “The Pittsburgh Amateur Hockey League (PAHL) and Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League (PIHL) do such a great job of growing the game here, and there are a number of good amateur programs. But we thought it made sense to have a AAA program directly affiliated with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

LITTLE PENGUINS LEARN TO PLAY HOCKEY
Sidney Crosby and his family wanted to help parents introduce their children to the game of hockey — and to do it without having to incur a prohibitive up-front cost. The result is the Little Penguins Learn to Play Hockey program. This generous donation and tremendous, one-of-a-kind opportunity allows children, aged 4-8, to receive free head-to-toe hockey equipment and 10 sessions of on-ice instruction. The 2012-13 season will be the fifth consecutive year for the Little Penguins program, which continues to grow. Last season twenty-three rinks hosted the program, which includes four girls-only locations. Since the program began during the 2008-2009 season more than 3,200 children have been introduced to hockey through this program. This season, 1,000 participants aged 4-8 will receive free gear and learn the game. Thanks to the combined efforts of Sidney Crosby, the Pittsburgh Penguins, Penguins Foundation, Reebok, and Dick’s Sporting Goods, all participants receive full sets of Reebok SC87 equipment, including skates, stick, helmet, gloves, pants, shoulder pads, shin pads, elbow pads, and an equipment bag, as well as an official Little Penguins jersey and helmet stickers. After four highly successful seasons, the program sells out quickly. During the pre-registration period, parents may view information regarding participating rinks, starting dates, number of sessions, and times of instructional sessions, which are listed on the Penguins’ website. For participant convenience, registration will occur online at pittsburghpenguins.com. “We were both excited and amazed by the reaction to the Little Penguins program in previous seasons, and we’re happy to be able to

offer the program again for another year,” Crosby said. “The goal is to continue to create opportunities for more kids in the Pittsburgh area to take up hockey. With the Little Penguins program, they can receive head-to-toe hockey equipment and learn the game in a fun and organized way.” “It’s a tribute to Sid and his family that they want to reach out and create this incredible opportunity for children in the Pittsburgh area,” said Penguins CEO and President David Morehouse. “One of their goals was to help parents by providing free head-to-toe hockey equipment to properly equip their children. The Penguins are honored to join Reebok and Dick’s Sporting Goods in supporting Sid and this great program.”

BEHIND THE BENCH WITH COACH DAN TIPS FOR YOUTH HOCKEY PLAYERS
SKATE, SKATE, SKATE No matter what level you are playing, skating is everything when it comes to hockey. However, skating isn’t just about being able to move backwards or forwards. Change of direction is critical when your team is on the transition from defense to offense, or vice versa. That makes being able stop, turn or pivot on a dime and quickly accelerate out of a start position as much a key to being a good skater as straight-ahead speed. Work hard to improve your skating when you can!
THE IMPORTANCE OF PASSING Pay attention to your passing. Nothing moves the puck up ice quicker than a tape-to-tape pass. A good passing team is able to maintain possession of the puck for long stretches, putting itself in position to generate more offense. What separates the great passers from the good ones is not only are they able to deliver the puck to a teammate when he or she is wide open, but they are able to use the boards and make area passes to teammates in traffic. “Practice perfect passing.”

GET TO THE NET Everybody has probably heard the saying ‘good things happen when you go to the net.’ There is a good reason for that — everything happens there. When you have a chance to shoot, get the puck on net. You also have to make sure that you physically go to the net so that way you are there for tips, rebounds and screens — all plays that lead directly to goals.
WORK HARD AND HAVE FUN We all want to be the best players we can be and help our team win each time we step on the ice. The easiest way to achieve this — WORK HARD EVERY TIME you step on the ice because work ethic is a huge key to being a successful hockey player. Just as important as working hard is ENJOYING THE GAME. Hockey is just that — a game — which means it is something we do to entertain ourselves. When you are having fun on the ice, chances are good that you are playing your best.

PITTSBURGH BECOMING A HOCKEY HOTBED

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania might not have a fancy nickname like ‘Hockeytown’, nor is it located in “The State of Hockey” — which is one of Minnesota’s unofficial nicknames for those of you scoring at home — but over the last decade, the ‘Steel City’ has cemented its status as one of the rising hotbeds of the hockey universe. Less than a decade ago, that statement would have been nearly impossible to believe. As the sweltering summer heat swept through our region in 2005, the NHL was in the final stages of 2005 NHL DRAFT wrapping up a lockout that cost the league the entire ’04-05 campaign. Locally, the Penguins were coming off a NHL-worst 58-point season in the year preceding the lockout, and local amateur hockey numbers were in sharp decline. Those fortunes changed with the fortuitous bounce of a ping-pong ball on July 22, 2005 — a stoke of luck that delivered wonderkid Sidney Crosby to the black-and-gold. In the blink of an eye, Evgeni Malkin joined the fold and the duo quickly transformed an up-andcoming team into Stanley Cup champions by 2009. The on-ice and box office success achieved by the Penguins since the arrival of Crosby and Malkin has increased hockey’s profile in Pittsburgh tenfold. Before Crosby’s debut in October 2005, Pittsburgh didn’t have much of a presence within the hockey world outside of legendary Hall of Fame owner Mario Lemieux, who was winding down his illustrious career. Sure, Upper St. Clair native Ryan Malone was coming off an impressive 22-goal rookie campaign with his hometown team, RYAN MALONE and Plum’s R.J. Umberger was set to make

make an NHL roster for the first time with the cross-state rival Philadelphia Flyers. But at the time, despite the talents each displayed, both seemed more like exceptions rather than trendsetters. While Malone, who helped the Penguins reach the Cup Final in ’08 before departing to the Tampa Bay Lightning, R.J. UMBERGER and Umberger continue to produce annually on hockey’s grandest stage, the next generation of Pittsburgh-born and trained players continues to make their mark on the hockey world. The dramatic improvement of the Pittsburgh amateur hockey pipeline was showcased at the 2011 NHL Draft in St. Paul, Minnesota, when four of the first 64 selections — J.T. Miller (NY Rangers, 1st round, 15th overall); John Gibson (Anaheim; 2nd round; 39th overall); Brandon Saad (Chicago, 2nd round, 43rd overall); and Vince Trocheck (Florida; 3rd round; 64th overall) — each grew up playing their youth hockey within the local amateur hockey ranks. With his selection at No. 15 overall, Miller became the highest-drafted player ever from the Pittsburgh region, edging out Umberger, who was taken 16th overall by Vancouver in 2001. Gibson was the second goaltender taken in the ’11 draft. Saad, who slipped a bit on draft day after being considered a top-five talent earlier that year, became the first of the quartet to reach the NHL when he made the Blackhawks’ ’1112 opening-night roster. He appeared in two regular-season and two playoff contests with BRANDON SAAD the Hawks, while in between starring for the Saginaw Spirit of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). As good as Saad and Gibson were last year — and First and Third-Team All-OHL honors, respectively, indicate both enjoyed fine seasons — neither was the best Pittsburgh-born player in the OHL.

That honor went to London Knights goaltender — and Wexford native — Michael Houser, who like the four players drafted in ’11 is an alum of the Pittsburgh Hornets ‘AAA’ program. Houser put together one of the finest junior seasons ever while leading the Knights to an OHL playoff championship and a runner-up finish at the Memorial Cup. Houser, who signed an entry-level contract with the Florida Panthers organization during the summer, was named the Canadian Hockey League’s ‘Goaltender of the Year’, won the OHL’s ‘Goaltender of the Year’ award and he became just the third American to win the OHL Most Outstanding Player award after posting a 46-15-0-1 record, 2.47 goals-against average and a .925 save percentage. His 46 wins tied the OHL record. Although Team USA had a disappointing showing at the 2012 World Junior Championship, it is impressive to note that of the 23 players who comprised the Americans’ roster, four (17%) hailed from Western Pennsylvania — Saad, Miller, Gibson and defenseman Stephen Johns, a defenseman from the University of Notre Dame who was selected by Chicago in the second round (60th overall) of the 2010 NHL Draft. This April, the 2013 Frozen Four — college hockey’s version of March Madness — will come to CONSOL Energy Center. If recent Frozen Fours are any indication, there is a good chance somebody from the 412 or 724 area code will factor heavily into determining a champion. That’s because each of the last three winners — Boston College in 2012 and ’10, and Minnesota-Duluth in ’11 — have been buoyed by local contributors. Leading the charge for Boston College at the ’12 Frozen Four was a pair of Mt. Lebanon Blue Devil alums — starting netminder Parker Milner and defenseman Patrick Wey. On their way to leading the Eagles to the title, both players were named to the Northeast Regional All-Tournament Team. Wey, who was drafted by the Washington Capitals in the fourth round (115th overall) of the 2009 NHL Draft, and Milner also played continued on page 183

smaller roles on Boston College’s ’10 championship squad. In between BC’s victories, Plum native Kenny Reiter helped backstop the University of Minnesota-Duluth to a Frozen Four championship over Michigan in ’11 — meaning the winning netminder from the past two national champions has come from Pittsburgh. Young players across our area from mites to high school players to stars at the college and junior level strive each day to become permanent NHL fixtures like Malone and Umberger. Dylan Reese, Mike Weber and Matt Bartkowski are three young defensemen with a sprinkle of NHL experience who appear poised to make that leap in the coming years. The elder statesman of the group is Reese, who like Malone hails from Upper St. Clair and is joining his hometown team this season. Prior to signing with Pittsburgh during the offseason, Reese has played a combined 74 NHL games with the New York Islanders over the past three seasons. Cranberry native Weber has the most experience of the three, suiting up for 132 games with the Buffalo Sabres entering the ’12-13 campaign. A punishing defender, Weber is probably most notorious to fans in these parts for not being DYLAN REESE afraid to mix it up physically with Crosby and Malkin in recent matchups against them. Bartkowski made the opening-night roster for the then-defending Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins last season. The previous spring, he participated in Boston’s march to the Cup as a member of the team’s taxi squad. Ironically, each of Bartkowski’s first three NHL games during the ’10-11 season came at CONSOL Energy Center. As you can see, hockey is alive and well in Pittsburgh at all levels — and that’s without us mentioning the vastly-improved Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League (PIHL) and the numerous players slated to join the college and junior ranks this coming season. Thanks to the on-ice success of the Penguins translating throughout the local community to children of all ages, hockey is only going to continue growing in these parts well into the future.

PITTSBURGH PENGUINS ELITE REPRESENTED WELL BY PAST, CURRENT PLAYERS By Brian Zagorac
While the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite presented by Dick’s Sporting Goods continues to win as a team, individual players have also garnered recognition for their success on the ice, from their peers as well as next-level hockey programs. The girls’ program has 23 former players currently playing at the collegiate level, with 12 playing at the NCAA Division 1 level — the highest level possible for women in the U.S. Adding her name to the list for next year will be Stephanie Lemieux. Stephanie has verbally committed to play for the Boston College Eagles beginning in the 2013-2014. Stephanie was on the first Pittsburgh Penguins Elite girls’ team in 2010. Prior to that, she attended the prestigious Shattuck St. Mary’s School in Faribault, MN where she won a USA Hockey National Championship playing with their 16 & Under team.

Two standout players on the 18 & Under boys’ team have been recognized by USHL Tier I programs. Goaltender Colin DeAugustine was called up by the Youngstown Phantoms of the United States Hockey League (USHL) on January 16th. DeAugustine (Burgettstown, PA) was a draft pick of the Phantoms in last spring’s USHL Draft and currently protected by the Phantoms on their affiliate list. This season, Colin has compiled a record of 12-4 as a starting goaltender for Pens Elite, with a GAA of 2.42 and a .920 save percentage. Also receiving recognition from the USHL was forward Matt Mendelson. Mendelson, an Upper St. Clair native, has recorded 11 points (3 goals and 8 assists) through 15 games with the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite 18 & Under team. Recently the Muskegon Lumberjacks of the United States Hockey League called up Mendelson for a pair of games against Eastern Conference foe, the Dubuque Fighting Saints. The United States Hockey League is the nation’s only Tier I Junior hockey league. The league is comprised of 16 Midwest amateur teams, consisting of players twenty-years-old and under and is the leading producer of NCAA college hockey players.

During the lockout, Dustin Jeffrey went to Croatia and found stardom. After the lockout, all he was looking for was a chance. The Penguins center prospered with KHL Medvescak Zagreb of the Austrian league, racking up 11 goals and 12 assists for the Croatiabased club as it hovered near the top of the standings. Jeffrey brought confidence accrued back to the NHL and hoped to continue his good play. As the jam-packed NHL season entered its second week, Jeffrey had dressed for just one of the Penguins’ first five games. But thanks to Zagreb, he’ll be ready when opportunity presents itself. “It was a cool experience,” said Jeffrey, 24. “I’d never been to Europe before. It was different. Eye-opening. It’s a better league than I expected. “There were a number of NHL guys that went over to play in the league. I think there were between 10 and 14. That raised the level. “There were a couple 12- or 14-hour bus rides that weren’t very fun. That brought me back to my American league days.” Jeffrey suffered a torn ACL in February, 2011. He had knee surgery and didn’t return until the 2011-12 season. Jeffrey’s ice time last season was sporadic: He only played 26 games, notching four goals and two assists. Jeffrey needed games. That’s why he headed to Zagreb and the Erste Bank Eishockey Liga, based in Austria but including teams from Croatia, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovenia.

“I prepared for training camp. Then we had the lockout,” Jeffrey said. “I looked right away for someplace to play. I needed to play. I thought that was best for my career, to play a lot and get my confidence back. To get a lot of minutes. “Maybe the league wasn’t the best, but I played 26-29 minutes per game. Power play and penalty-kill. We only used two or three lines. That gave me the opportunity to play a lot, get my confidence back and have success. I had success and the team had success. It was a good feeling. “Hopefully, it’s going to show that I’ve been competing against people and battling against people, trying to score goals.” The Penguins are a tough team to play for if you’re a center. Unless you’re Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin or Brandon Sutter, that is. That trio has the top three center spots on lockdown. Jeffrey has to fight for what he can get. “We have a lot of centers who have had success in this league,” said the 6-foot-1, 205-pounder. “The top two are pretty unbelievable. “I’ve just got to come in here and do my work. Play whatever position they tell me and let the chips fall where they may.” Jeffrey — a sixth-round choice in the 2007 NHL draft — can play wing and has played wing. “I have more experience at center,” said the product of Sarnia, Ontario. “It’s a matter of opportunity. “After you play a couple games [at wing], you get comfortable. It’s a different mentality. You don’t have the freedom to roam as much. You’ve got to play up and down your wing. You have more responsibility to stay in your position in the defensive zone. At center, you have more freedom.” Jeffrey says his knee is OK. He’s ready to go. “I feel good now,” he said. “I got my confidence back playing in a league comparable to the American league. I had success. I was able to contribute. I’m ready to contribute again. It comes with opportunity.” Mark Madden hosts a radio show 3-6 p.m. weekdays on WXDX-FM (105.9).

TANNER GLASS #GlassQA @Nikki_Ziggs If you could be any superhero who would it be? #GlassQA — On Superhero: “I think I’d be Superman. He can do it all. He’s pretty much invincible too except for that kryptonite.”On what his kryptonite is: “Oh man, I don’t know. It’s yet to be determined, I guess.” @jbeachley18 @penguins @TGlass15 Have you had a chance to sample some of the foods of Pittsburgh? If so, what is your favorite? #GlassQA “Yeah, I think the restaurant Salt of the Earth is my favorite so far. I can’t pick a certain thing, but it’s a good spot.” @FR32H2D34TH #GlassQA Favorite sports team? (Non NHL) “Toronto Blue Jays without a doubt. Best baseball team there is. Sorry Pirates fans.” @Bing_87 #GlassQA. Do you always wear a beard? “No, it’s my look. I always wear it. I guess it just started in college, and kept it since. Yeah, think I have fat cheeks, so I like to keep it.” @EmmyW27 #GlassQA What’s your favorite hockey memory so far? “I’d say my favorite hockey memory is going to the finals a couple years ago with Vancouver. You know, those couple mornings where we woke up and had a chance to win the Cup that night, that was a pretty special run.” @JeffMacDonald3 #GlassQA What is one word you would use to describe your short time in pitts so far? #welcome “I’ve been very welcomed. People have been really good to me and have made me feel at home.” @tara87danforth In the end why did you sign with Pittsburgh this summer? #GladToHaveYa #GlassQA @penguins “I think I picked here because I think the team has a really good chance to win. You know, playing against the team in the past few years, I thought they’ve been really tough to play against and a team that is Stanley Cup contender. So, winning is important to me and I think this team has as good a shot as any to win it.”

WESTERN PA: GOALTENDER FACTORY Western Pennsylvania has long been famous for producing quarterbacks but lately the region has begun to diversify. And now it’s goaltenders that are seemingly being mass-produced. Two of the recently-minted editions, Matthew Skoff of McKees Rocks and Jake Hildebrand of Butler, squared off on Jan. 26th in East Lansing, Mich. Skoff and Penn State got the MATTHEW SKOFF better of Hildebrand and Michigan State, 3-2, in a battle of Keystone State natives and former roommates at Sioux City in the United States Hockey League. The two freshmen figure to go at it again and again beginning next season in the inaugural season of Big Ten Conference hockey, but that didn’t make their first NCAA Division I meeting any less special. “I thought that was kind of cool,” Skoff said. As their careers progress, Skoff and Hildebrand — who are both avid fans of Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury — can only hope to follow in the skate strides of their Western Pennsylvania predecessors in net. Included in that group is Rob Madore (Peters Township), who KENNY REITER backstopped Vermont to the Frozen Four in 2008-09. Then there’s Kenny Reiter (Plum), who led the University of Minnesota- Duluth to the national championship in 2010-11. continued on page 218

And then there’s Parker Milner (Mt. Lebanon), who took Boston College to the national championship in 2011-12 (Milner and BC are thriving again this season, and were rated No. 5 in the nation in the Jan. 28 uscho.com Top 20). John Gibson (Whitehall) might also be included in that group had he gone PARKER MILNER the college route. Instead, Gibson led Team USA to the 2013 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship. “I can give you one reason why Western Pennsylvania goalies are starting to make their mark, and that’s Shane Clifford,” Skoff said of the famous goaltending guru who calls Coraopolis home and who annually runs goalie schools and goalie camps JOHN GIBSON in the area. Clifford’s numerous coaching stops include a year with Robert Morris (2004-05) and a stint working as the Penguins’ goaltending coach in 2005-06. Skoff can remember Monday afternoon skating drills as a sixth-grader under Clifford’s direction. “I wouldn’t even see a puck,” Skoff said. “If it wasn’t for him I wouldn’t be where I am today.” Where Skoff is at present is in the middle of the most unlikely Western Pennsylvania goaltending story of all. The victory at Michigan State earned a split of the series against the Spartans and achieved a double-digit victory total in Penn State’s first Division I season (10-13-0). The Nittany Lions have also beaten Air Force (like Michigan State an NCAA Tournament team in 2011-12), future Big Ten Conference

foe Ohio State (in the consolation game of the Three Rivers Classic on Dec. 30 at the CONSOL Energy Center) and Vermont of the prestigious Hockey East (4-2 at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia after the Penguins and Flyers had opened the NHL season on Jan. 19; ERIC LEVINE the attendance was 19,529). “We’ve won some games a lot of people thought we weren’t going to win,” Skoff said. “And what speaks volumes right now is being 2-1 against Big Ten teams (Penn State will play at Wisconsin on Feb. 24-25). “The only guys that believed that could happen were on the coaching staff at Penn State. The strides we’ve taken this year have been giant leaps. This is a resilient team.” The same could be said of Boston College and Milner, who entered this weekend’s play ranked 10th in the nation in winning percentage (14-6-2, .682). Hildebrand lost his head-to-head meeting with Skoff but emerged 18th nationally in goals-against average (2.07) and ninth in save percentage (.937). And then there’s Eric Levine of Robert Morris. Levine, a product of Wheeling, Ill., is an import to Western Pennsylvania rather than a native. But his play in the Colonials’ net this season is nonetheless carving out a chapter in Western Pennsylvania’s growing goaltending history. Heading into RMU’s home series this weekend against Sacred Heart Levine was tied for third in the nation in shutouts (three), No. 6 in save percentage (.939) and No. 24 in winning percentage (11-7-2, .600). Levine’s 99 stops on 99 shots in a 6-0 victory over Penn State and a 1-0 triumph over then-No. 5 Miami helped Robert Morris capture the inaugural Three Rivers Classic, Dec. 29-20 at CONSOL Energy Center. Such numbers were representative, indeed, of the region where goaltenders suddenly come from.
