GAME NOTES

By: Bob Grove

THE SERIES The Penguins play the middle game of a three-game homestand tonight as they host the Florida Panthers. Pittsburgh hosted Philadelphia on Wednesday and will play here against Tampa Bay on Sunday before beginning a three-game road trip Tuesday in Florida — thus tonight’s game is the first of two in five days between the teams. . . These teams haven’t played since last March 9, when Pittsburgh earned a 2-1 shootout victory at home. . . The Penguins have won two straight games against the Panthers, seven of the last eight and 12 of the last 15. . . Pittsburgh went 3-1-0 against Florida last season, with Pascal Dupuis leading all scorers in the series with six points (1+5). Tomas Fleischmann (3+1) led all goal scorers in the series, while teammate Stephen Weiss (1+3) also had four points. . . The Penguins’ recent success against the Panthers has come despite some significant power-play problems: they’ve missed on 21 consecutive power-play chances since Sidney Crosby beat current teammate Tomas Vokoun on Nov. 22, 2010 during a 3-2 Pittsburgh victory in Florida. On the continued on page 8

continued from page 7

calendar, Pittsburgh’s power-play drought against the Panthers goes even farther when it comes to home games; its last home power-play goal against Florida was scored 37 seconds into overtime by Evgeni Malkin for a 3-2 win over Vokoun and the Panthers on Dec. 12, 2009. The Penguins have missed on 13 straight power plays here since then. . . Pittsburgh has won seven consecutive home games against Florida, its longest such streak ever against the Panthers, and has won 10 of its last 11 home games against the Panthers. Florida’s last win here came more than four years ago on Jan. 3, 2009 when Nathan Horton had two goals and was one of six Panthers with two points in a 6-1 win over the Penguins. . . Five of the last seven games between the teams played in Pittsburgh were decided after regulation, with Pittsburgh winning four in shootouts and one in overtime. Each of the last seven games between these teams that went beyond regulation was won by Pittsburgh, including three in overtime. . . The Penguins have won each of the last five games against Florida in which they allowed the game’s first goal. . . Pittsburgh is 38-28-4-3 all-time against the Panthers, including a 22-11-3-1 record at home. . . The final meeting between the teams will be April 13 in Florida.

Pittsburgh began this homestand on a three-game winning streak after a 4-2 home win over Ottawa on Feb. 13, a 3-1 road win in Winnipeg one week ago tonight and a 4-3 road win in Buffalo this past Sunday. That gave the Penguins an 8-2 road record this season, the first time in team history they’ve won eight of their first 10 games away from home. . . Sidney Crosby and Pascal Dupuis both had three points in the win over the Sabres, putting Crosby a single point behind the Sabres’ Tomas Vanek for the NHL scoring lead at that point. . . Chris Kunitz matched a career high by picking up an assist for the fourth straight game in the win over Buffalo (0+4). Heading into the

game here Wednesday against Philadelphia, both Kunitz and Crosby had recorded a point in 12 of 16 games this season. . . Beau Bennett, recalled from the AHL last week, was hoping to play his first home NHL game here Wednesday against the Flyers. . . Marc-Andre Fleury started for the sixth time in seven games last Sunday, making 30 saves in the win over the Sabres. . . Malkin had one goal in nine games going into the matchup with the Flyers. . . Kris Letang, who set up Dupuis’ tying goal in the win over Buffalo, had points in six of the last seven games (2+5) before facing the Flyers. . . Kunitz and Crosby had both been even or plus players in 15 straight games (plus-12) as this homestand began.

THE PANTHERS Tonight will mark Alexei Kovalev’s first regular-season game here since he played for the Penguins in their 4-2 win over New Jersey on April 5, 2011. He had an assist in that game. . . Kovalev has not played against the Penguins in Pittsburgh since Jan. 28, 2010, when he was held scoreless in a 4-1 win by the Ottawa Senators. He has 15 goals and 35 points in 48 career games against the Penguins and had two goals and five points in his first 12 games with Florida. . . Before hosting Toronto this past Monday, the Panthers had won only one of their last six games (1-1-4), with all four defeats after regulation coming in overtime. The most recent of those was a 6-5 home loss to Tampa Bay in which the Panthers had a 5-3 lead with 13 minutes to play. . . The game against the Maple Leafs was the last of a fourgame homestand for Florida, which played in Philadelphia last night. The Panthers will begin a three-game homestand against Boston on Sunday. Florida plays 12 of its final 19 games this season on the road . . . Fleischmann was leading the Panthers in scoring with 10 points before facing Toronto. ALEXEI KOVALEV

The First Ever ES Hybrid. 40 MPG EPA-Estimated.* At first glance, it’s a bold statement of style. Read between the lines, however, and you’ll discover that the first ever ES Hybrid doesn’t merely make a statement, it backs it up. Take, for instance, the sleek, sculpted appearance. It’s not just for show—the aerodynamic design boosts fuel efficiency up to an EPA-estimated 40 MPG.* And while the hand-stitched panels and precision-crafted interior make a stunning first impression, the available next-generation technologies in connectivity elevate the conversation. Ultimately, the 2013 ES Hybrid not only sends a message—it’s sure to build a following.

COMMUNITY UPDATE PENGUINS SALUTE 2012 HOCKEY-BASED SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS By: Abby Geisel

The Pittsburgh Penguins and the Penguins Booster Club selected Tara Soukup of Baldwin High School as the Bob Johnson Memorial Scholarship winner for 2012. The scholarship, valued at $5,000, is presented in honor of the Penguins’ late head coach, Bob Johnson, who led the team to their first Stanley Cup Championship in 1991. The scholarship is awarded to the student who best embodies the ideals that Bob Johnson strived to instill in the players he mentored and coached throughout his life. Additionally, the Pittsburgh Penguins Alumni Association awarded their annual scholarship to Penn-Trafford High School graduate Daniel Maier. A committee of Penguins alumni evaluated candidates and awarded Maier the scholarship, valued at $2,000, last summer. The Penguins Alumni Scholarship is co-sponsored by the NHL Alumni Association. Both scholarships are presented annually to western Pennsylvania high school seniors. Scholarship recipients have each excelled academically, assisted their community, and displayed strong leadership qualities. They also exemplify sportsmanship and have positive attitudes as members of their schools’ hockey programs. Soukup played defense on the varsity hockey team for two years and served as assistant captain during her senior year. She registered one goal and four assists during the 2011-12 season and was honored with the Cox Award, presented by her coach for her positive role as a leader on and off the ice. She also served as captain of the Ohio Flames, a AAA Tier 1 Girls Hockey Team. In the community, Soukup assisted with the Special Olympics, served as a lobby escort at Jefferson Regional Medical Center, was a D.A.R.E. speaker at Harrison Middle School and continues to be continued on page 22

an ongoing blood donor. She participated in Spanish Club, Science Club, and Lacrosse. She also excelled in the classroom, maintaining a 4.0 GPA, while managing 16 AP courses. Soukup was named a PAHL Academic All-Star in 2009 and was a member of the National Honor Society. She was also one of 50 students selected to attend the Southwest Pennsylvania Area Health Education Center Summer Health THE PITTSBURGH Career Academy. Soukup is the daughter of Jack and Elaine Soukup of Pittsburgh, PA. She attends Penn State University where she plays on the Women’s Ice Hockey Team. Maier was a forward on the Penn-Trafford hockey team for four seasons, serving as assistant captain his senior year. He led the PIHL AAA Division in scoring with 75 points (43 goals, 32 assists). Maier ranks third in all-time scoring for Penn-Trafford. Equally as impressive as Maier’s excellence on the ice is his dedication to amateur hockey. As a member of the Allegheny Badgers hockey club, Maier and his teammates were instructors for the USA Hockey Try Hockey for Free Day and the Learn to Play Hockey program sponsored by the Allegheny Hockey Association. Maier also participated in two hockey games against the Mighty Penguins sled hockey team. Academically, Maier maintained a 4.0 GPA throughout his high school career. He was a member of the National Honor Society, High Honor Roll and was a state qualifier for Future Business Leaders of America in Accounting. Outside the classroom, he participated in German Club, Ski Club, Varsity Club and the Community Action Program. Maier currently attends Robert Morris University where he majors in Accounting and is a member of the golf team. He is the son of Tim and Karen Maier of Irwin, PA. Congratulations on your outstanding achievements in high school and best wishes for continued success in your college careers — Tara Soukup and Daniel Maier!

AROUND THE NHL By Mike Prisuta

New Jersey’s Ilya Kovalchuk took the ice on President’s Day looking for career point No. 801. Kovalchuk had reached the 800 plateau with an assist on Feb, 16 against the Islanders, his 794th career NHL game. Kovalchuk (411 goals, 389 assists, Ilya Kovalchuk 800 points) and fellow Devils forward Patrik Elias (365-548-913) stood at the time as the third-highest scoring pair of teammates in the NHL (1,713 combined points), behind Tampa Bay’s Vincent Lacavalier and Martin St. Louis (1,730), and San Jose’s Patrick Marleau and Joe Thornton (1,938).

DEVILS’ DYNAMIC DUO:

SPECIAL-TEAMS BOOM OR BUST: The Flyers went 8-for-26 on the power play (30.8 percent) in the first seven games in which they earned a point this season (six wins, one shootout loss) and 3-for-38 with a man-advantage (7.8 percent) in their first seven regulation losses.

A 40-MINUTE EQUATION: Philadelphia’s first 16 games featured another unmistakable trend. The Flyers went 6-0-1 in games they led after two periods and 0-9-0 in games they trailed after two.

JUST GET A GOAL: Nashville earned points in 12 of its first 15 games and was shut out in the other three. The Predators’ defensive effort through their first 15 contests (7-3-5) included allowing only 16 goals at even strength. Nashville’s 245 blocked shots led the league through that span.

HABS’ HISTORY: Andrei Markov’s game-winning goals in each of the Canadiens’ first three victories this season (Jan, 22, 24 and 27) marked the first time in franchise history that a defenseman had turned that trick. The last Canadiens player to score the gamewinning goal in three straight games was Martin Rucinsky on Nov. 27, 29 and 30, 2000.

NO GUARANTEES: The Islanders’ 6-7-1 start could have been better if only. The Isles had been tied or leading in the third period in four of their first seven regulation losses. 24

MARIO LEMIEUX CO-OWNER/CHAIRMAN

Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in National Hockey League history, is in his 14th season as co-owner and chairman of the board of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice — including six straight playoff appearances and a Stanley Cup championship in 2009. The Penguins entered the 2012-13 season having sold out 254 straight games while setting new standards for local television ratings, merchandise sales, website traffic and social media. Lemieux and Burkle were driving forces in the quest for a new multi-purpose arena for Pittsburgh and were proud to open CONSOL Energy Center in August, 2010. The sparkling facility is rated one of the top facilities in North America and hosted such national events as the 2012 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament Second and Third Rounds and the 2012 NHL Draft. Known as “Le Magnifique,” Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. An immaculately gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranks eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org. The Penguins ownership group, local labor organizations and members of the Pittsburgh business community honored Lemieux in 2012 with a statue to commemorate his career and contributions to the city and the region. Appropriately named “Le Magnifique,” the statue, by nationally-acclaimed sculptor Bruce Wolfe, can be seen outside of the Trib Total Media gate at CONSOL Energy Center. Mario and his wife, Nathalie, and their four children live in Sewickley.

RON BURKLE CO-OWNER

Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 14th season as co-owner of the Penguins. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they have become one of the outstanding ownership tandems in professional sports. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his essential role in negotiations for a new arena. CONSOL Energy Center is considered one of the finest indoor facilities in North America and has attracted many national-level events to Pittsburgh — including the 2013 NCAA Frozen Four, coming in April, 2013. Under the leadership of Lemieux and Burkle, the Penguins have sold out every game for five-plus seasons and consistently rank among the most fan-friendly and community-minded teams in the NHL and all of pro sports. The Penguins reached back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals in 2008 and 2009 and won the Cup in ‘09. The team’s solid foundation of ownership has enabled hockey management to spend to the salary cap, sign many of the team’s young core players to long-term contracts and put a competitive team on the ice year after year — leading to six straight playoff berths. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is Co-Chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League, Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy and AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA). Ron was the Founder and Chairman of the Ralph’s/Food4Less Foundation and the Fred Meyer Inc. Foundation. He was a member of the board of Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: OXY), KB Home (NYSE: KBH), Kaufman & Broad S.A. (Euronext: KOF), Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO), the J. Paul Getty Trust, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Music Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. He has received numerous honors and awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year, the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year Award and the APLA Commitment to Life Award.

DAVID MOREHOUSE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER & PRESIDENT

David Morehouse has established himself as one of the most dynamic senior executives in the National Hockey League. Since being named President of the Penguins in April, 2007, Morehouse has reshaped the team’s image and strategic vision with an emphasis on branding, fan relations, youth marketing, community interaction, corporate outreach and innovative technology. He was given the additional responsibilities of Chief Executive Officer in September, 2010, and oversees every aspect of the Penguins’ operations, reporting directly to co-owners Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle. Under Morehouse’s leadership, the Penguins quickly developed a new commitment to innovative fan outreach — including an annual event where players personally deliver season tickets to fans’ homes and a special preseason game where all 18,000 tickets are distributed free to local youth. His emphasis on branding and marketing, coupled with the team’s success on the ice, enabled the Penguins to lead all U.S.-based NHL and NBA teams in local television ratings during the 2011-12 season. Keeping with that trend, the Penguins led all U.S.-based NHL teams in website traffic and Twitter followers while continually setting new standards for merchandise sales. Youth hockey participation also is on the rise — in part because of Morehouse’s support for efforts such as Sidney Crosby’s Little Penguins Learn to Play program, which distributes free head-to-toe hockey equipment, including skates, to 1,000 kids aged 5-7 each year. The Penguins have sold out every game for five-plus seasons, a streak that had reached 254 games before the start of the 2012-13 season. They also have sold out all suites for four-plus seasons and actually increased capacity at CONSOL Energy Center by 300 seats (to 18,387) after the arena’s inaugural season in 2010-11. Morehouse himself was named 2011 CEO Communicator of the Year by the Pittsburgh Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America. The Pittsburgh native joined the Penguins in 2004 as Senior Consultant on the new arena project following a career in national politics that included stints at the White House, Pentagon and on Capitol Hill as well as key roles in two Presidential campaigns. Morehouse attended the Community College of Allegheny County and Duquesne University and received a master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. He and his wife, Vanessa, have four children and live in Sewickley Heights.

RAY SHERO

EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT & GENERAL MANAGER

Ray Shero has established himself as one of the premiere general managers in the National Hockey League. Shero, 50, who is in his seventh season as Pittsburgh’s GM, has transformed a franchise that missed the playoffs from 2002-06 into a perennial championship contender, including two Stanley Cup Final appearances and a Cup title in 2009. Shero, who was named general manager of the Penguins in May, 2006, arrived in Pittsburgh with a firm, forward-thinking managerial style that incorporates cutting-edge methods of technology, player relations, prospect development and salary cap management. Shero’s efforts have secured the Penguins’ long-term stability and competitiveness with his masterful maneuvering of the salary cap — the Penguins ranked No. 3 out of 122 pro sports franchises in spending efficiency according to Bloomberg Business Week — and multi-year signings of the team’s core players: Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Marc-Andre Fleury, Brooks Orpik, Kris Letang, and James Neal. Shero’s riskiest and boldest move paid off with hockey’s highest prize. With the Penguins needing a jolt of life late in the 2008-09 season, he promoted Wilkes-Barre/Scranton head coach Dan Bylsma to Pittsburgh. Bylsma led a turnaround that resulted in a championship in ’09. Bylsma also won the Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s “Most Outstanding Coach” in ’11. Shero cut his administrative teeth during 14 seasons as an assistant general manager with the Nashville Predators (1998-06) and Ottawa Senators (1993-98). Shero, a native of St. Paul, Minn., was raised in a hockey family filled with tradition. His father, Fred Shero, played for the NY Rangers (1947-50) and coached the Philadelphia Flyers for seven seasons. Fred won back-to-back Stanley Cups as head coach of the Flyers in 1974 and ’75 and also served as general manager of the Rangers for three years (1978-80), leading the club to the Stanley Cup Final in 1979. The Sheros are one of the few father-son tandems to have their names on the Cup. Shero played college hockey at St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y. He twice led the team in scoring and was named team captain on two occasions. He graduated in 1984 as one of the top-10 scorers in school history. Shero, who was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in the 1982 NHL Draft, spent seven years as a player agent before making the transition to the front office. Shero is actively involved with USA Hockey and is a member of the USA Hockey National Team Advisory Group. Ray and his wife, Karen, and their two sons reside in Upper St. Clair.

JASON BOTTERILL ASSISTANT GENERAL MANAGER

Jason Botterill is in his fourth full season as assistant general manager after being promoted to his current position in May, 2009, by GM Ray Shero. As assistant GM, Botterill works closely with Shero on all hockey-related matters, including scouting, player development and contract negotiations. He also manages hockey operations and acts as GM for the club’s top minor-league affiliate, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League. Prior to his promotion, Botterill, 36, worked two seasons as director of hockey administration with the Penguins; his responsibilities included salary cap management, professional and amateur scouting and overseeing prospect development. Botterill’s avant-garde approach and understanding of the salary cap has been a major asset for the Penguins. Before joining the Pittsburgh organization, he worked with NHL Central Registry and also scouted for the Dallas Stars. Botterill, a native of Edmonton who grew up in Winnipeg, was a firstround draft pick (20th overall) by Dallas in the 1994 NHL Draft and played 88 NHL games over six seasons with Dallas, Atlanta, Calgary and Buffalo. He also played 393 career games in the AHL and IHL, recording 127 goals and 257 points. Following his playing career, he returned to the University of Michigan to earn his MBA. Jason and his wife, Andrea, and their daughter, Alisa, reside in Pittsburgh.

RULES OF THE GAME PRESENTED BY

BOARDING

BOARDING To check or push a defenseless opponent in such a manner that causes the opponent to hit or impact into the boards dangerously or violently.

T:8.5”

B:8.75”

S:8.5”

-

The player applying the check needs to ensure his opponent is not in a defenseless position and if so, must avoid contact.

-

The player with the puck needs to avoid placing himself in a dangerous and defenseless position.

-

Any unnecessary contact with a player playing the puck on an obvious “icing” or “off-sides” play that does not impact boards should be treated as “charging.”

DELAY OF GAME A player may be penalized when, in the opinion of the Referee, is delaying the game in any matter. (Normally six conditions) 1.) Player or goaltender intentionally shoots or throws the puck out

of the playing area.

2.) A defensive player or goaltender in the defensive zone shoots the

puck directly (without being deflected) over the glass.

3.) A player or goaltender intentionally knocks the net’s goalpost off

its moorings, which stops the play.

4.) The goaltender plays the puck out of the trapezoid behind the net. 5.) The goaltender freezes the puck rather than passing it to a team-

mate when no player on the opposing team is within sufficient distance to apply offensive pressure.

6.) Any skater other than the goaltender who uses their hands to

make the puck unplayable.

INTERFERENCE INTERFERENCE

BODY POSITION: Body position will be determined as the player skating in front of or beside his opponent, traveling in the same direction. - A player who is behind an opponent, who does not have the puck, may not use his stick, body or free hand in order to restrain his opponent. POSSESSION OF THE PUCK: The last player to touch the puck, other than the goaltenders, will be considered the player in possession. RESTRAIN: The actions of a player or goaltender who does not have body position, but instead uses illegal means to impede an opponent who is not in possession of the puck. PICK: The action of a player or goaltender who checks an opponent who is not in possession of the puck and is unaware of the impending check/hit. FREE HAND: When a free hand is used to hold, pull, tug, grab or physically restrain an opponent from moving freely, this must be penalized as holding.

STICK: A player who does not have body position on his opponent, who used his stick to impede or prevent his opponent from moving freely on the ice shall be assessed a hooking penalty.

OFF-SIDES Players of the attacking team must not precede the puck into the attacking zone. (Two determining factors) 1.) One of a player’s skates is not in contact with or behind the blue

line of the attacking zone before the puck enters that zone.

2.) The puck must completely cross the edge of the blue line nearest

the attacking zone to be considered inside the attacking zone.

The act of using the stick in a manner that enables a player to restrain an opponent.

-

When a player is checking another in such a way that there is only stick-tostick contact, such action is not to be penalized as hooking.

TOURS AVAILABLE

GET A BEHIND THE SCENES LOOK AT THE ARENA

Tickets for CONSOL Energy Center’s tours draw visitors of all ages and interests who want to see more of the Pittsburgh Penguins’ home and the city’s newest, greenest entertainment facility. CONSOL Energy Center tours, presented by Bayer MaterialScience, walk visitors through areas of the building that fans might not get to see when they attend a game or other entertainment. For example, on the PNC Legends Level more than $1 million worth of artwork, done in collaboration with James Gallery of Pittsburgh, is on display. It includes large wall murals, 10 PNC Legendary Moments shadowboxes and photography featuring Pittsburgh Penguins players. Tours provide guests with an exclusive look at all seating levels of CONSOL Energy Center, as well as the First Niagara, Captain Morgan and Lexus clubs, a Canadian Party Suite, select locker rooms and more. Based on events taking place in the building, Suite 66 and the Visitor’s Hockey Locker Room are shown when available. These areas are of interest to many people but not ordinarily accessible to most visitors. One of the other features included in the tours is the centerpiece PensVision, measuring nearly 25’ wide and 15’ high and 70,000 pounds. With true High Definition resolution along with enhanced contrast and brightness, the screens redefine the arena video experience for Penguins fans. Just below the center-ice scoreboard there are two, 360 degree LED ribbon boards. These are a first of their kind in Pittsburgh. The scoreboard and LED ribbon boards combined cost a total of $8 million. Throughout CONSOL Energy Center there are over 800 flat-screen TVs. They are used to display messages to fans, keep fans in the game while away from

their seats along with displaying the menus at the concession stands throughout the arena. On the FedEx Level, just above the American Eagle Gate, sits the World’s Largest Goalie Mask. The idea of James Gallery, it was painted by renowned artist David Arrigo, who has painted masks for several NHL goaltenders. The display is presented by Bayer MaterialScience and features “The Science of Sport” kiosks showcasing the science behind sports including how a hockey puck moves on ice. The Goalie mask, which is 9.5 feet high by 8 feet wide by 12 feet deep and weighs in between 700-800 lbs, features the celebration of fans and players after a goal is scored. The materials used to construct the mask are protected by a high-performance polyurethane coating containing raw materials produced by Bayer MaterialScience. This basecoat serves as the foundation for both the white background and the artist’s colors. A final polyurethane clearcoat over the artwork provides additional protection and durability. Also part of the tour is the Highmark Kid’s Zone — an interactive play area that offers both educational and recreational activities for children of all ages. The Highmark Kid’s Zone includes four Wii consoles, videos and trivia, faceoff and puck games, along with a replica of the famous Sidney Crosby dryer. Located further down the hall is the Highmark Wall of Champions. The Highmark Wall of Champions is two stories tall and contains the official jerseys of all PIHL (Pittsburgh Interscholastic Hockey League) teams, regional high schools as well as select other amateur teams in the region. “The tour highlights the environmentally friendly components of the building which qualified CONSOL Energy Center to become the first NHL Arena to receive LEED Gold Certification,” says David Peart, Vice President, Pittsburgh Penguins. “The tours allow us to highlight our continuing efforts toward improving the environment, which are detailed on 12 different plaques located throughout the building,” says Mr. Peart. PITTSBURGH PENGUINS FOUNDATION

HEADS UP PITTSBURGH

KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE

In 2012, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation expanded the HEADS UP Pittsburgh free baseline concussion testing program to include youth athletes ages 10-14 in all sports. Since the program started in 2011, over 3,400 youth hockey players have been tested along with 1,500 athletes representing 12 other sports. The program originally began with youth hockey players only. Testing took place at UPMC Sports Medicine on the South Side, as well as at four Community College of Allegheny County locations — Boyce, North, South and West Hills Center. “Our original youth hockey testing program in 2011 was a tremendous success because it touched thousands of young players and created increased awareness about concussion safety,” said Dave Soltesz, president of the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation. “Based on our mission to actively promote physical well being among young people in the community, it was an easy decision to expand the program to other sports beyond hockey.” While athletes are being tested, their parents meet with UPMC Sports Medicine Concussion Program staff to learn about “HEADS UP Pittsburgh.” Certified athletic trainers from the UPMC Sports Concussion Program supervise the program and testing. MAY 25, 1991 STANLEY CUP CLINCHER With an 8-0 victory over the Minnesota North Stars, the Penguins become Stanley Cup champions for the first time in their 24-year history.

JOIN THE RUSH!

TM

Introduced in the mid 1990’s, the American Eagle Student Rush Program is one of the most popular and well known marketing initiatives of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Designed to sell remaining game-day inventory, the American Eagle Student Rush program provides the Pittsburgh Penguins an opportunity to introduce new fans to the game of hockey at a discounted rate. Based upon the positive feedback the organization has received from current season ticket holders who were one-time Student Rush participants, the program has been successful in developing a long-term relationship with young, active Pittsburghers. During the 2012-13 season, at least 200 American Eagle Student Rush tickets will be made available for each regular season home game at CONSOL Energy Center. To avoid long waits outside during the winter months, the organization will host online pre-sales for most games. To receive pre-sale information, students can text RUSH to 32623 to register for the American Eagle Student Rush Mobile Club. Each pregame text includes the opportunity to win two free tickets to the next home game! In addition to the 200 tickets offered each game, several special Student Rush nights will be held. At least 500 student rush tickets will be available for these select games at the American Eagle Gate. Music, prizes and giveaways will also be provided courtesy of American Eagle Outfitters. For more information on the American Eagle Student Rush program and a schedule of upcoming Student Rush nights, scan the code at the top of the page or visit pittsburghpenguins.com/studentrushÂ

Bennett Family

When Beau Bennett was a youngster growing up in California, his grandmother taught him about a sport called hockey. Grandma Bennett grew up in Winnipeg, Manitoba. And even though hockey was not on many kids’ minds in Gardena, grandma showed little Beau pictures of hockey players from Winnipeg and told him about how everyone in the city loves their hockey teams. As a result, Beau wanted to play hockey. A little less than two decades later, Bennett played in first career game in the National Hockey League, suiting up for the Pittsburgh Penguins in the very city that inspired him to play as a child — Winnipeg. Bennett, 21, skated 11:37 minutes of ice time, registered one shot on goal and two blocked shot against the Jets at MTS Centre Feb. 15. BEAU BENNETT “I had fun out there,” Bennett said after the game. “It got easier as the game went on. Lot of jitters during the anthems. That was to be expected. But when I got out there I didn’t feel nervous or anything, just kind of let the game happen.” Bennett, the Penguins’ first-round pick (20th overall) in the 2010 NHL Draft, has been hailed as a highly skilled winger of the future. Head coach Dan Bylsma took a glimpse of the future in Winnipeg, and liked what he saw. “I thought Beau started the game really well,” he said. “He was in the offensive zone, made some plays and won some puck battles.”

Bennett, who played the majority of the game on the left side with Brandon Sutter and Tyler Kennedy, made his biggest impact on the game late in the second period. The Penguins were scrambling in the defensive zone and the Jets were applying a lot of pressure. It appeared that a goal was inevitable for Winnipeg. 2010 NHL DRAFT The puck came to the point and Bennett, without hesitation, dropped down on one knee to block the shot. After the puck caromed off his body Bennett — his face grimacing with pain — had the presence of mind to swat the puck out of the zone. “In the moment you just do it and hope nothing bad comes of it,” Bennett said. “Luckily, it hit me in a good spot. It didn’t feel great, but I got the puck out of the zone and that was the key.” While the shot block left a mark on Bennett’s body, it also left a mark on his teammates. “I thought the blocked shot probably won over his teammates more than anything else he did in the game,” Bylsma said. “It was a great blocked shot. He stuck with it and got the puck out in a second period where we desperately needed to get some guys off the ice. I know the bench was pretty excited to see Beau go down there and make the play.” Bennett is playing in his first season of professional hockey in 2012-13, opening the year in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League. Through the first 35 games, he placed second on the team with 18 assists and fourth with 25 points. The 6-foot-2, continued on page 114

190-pound forward represented the organization at the AHL All-Star Classic — though he did not play due to injury. Bennett, the highest-drafted California native in NHL history, impressed the Penguins brass with his quick transition and early success. When the Penguins had an open roster spot, Bennett was the player they tapped to fill it. “He’s earned a call up. He’s played exceptional this year,” Bylsma said. “He’s added to his game defensively, puck management, playing in the offensive zone, showing he can play in puck battle areas, down low areas, both power play and five-on-five. That’s what he’s done this year in addition to the skill that he has and play making that he had. He earned this opportunity to come up and play.” Only time will tell if Bennett remains with the Penguins for the rest of the season. The rookie winger could be returned to Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton at any time. And it’s also possible that he could split time between both clubs. But one thing is certain, on that February night Bennett played his favorite sport at the highest level. And no matter how things unfold, that can never be taken away from him. On that same evening, somewhere in Gardena a proud grandmother sat watching the television with a warm heart and smile. On the screen, she saw a hockey game unfold in Winnipeg, the city of her childhood, and, on this night, the city where her grandson Beau’s childhood dream came true.

PITTSBURGH PENGUINS FOUNDATION

PROJECT POWER PLAY Project Power Play represents a group of partners; The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, Highmark, the City of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County, who are focused on building 12 multi-sport dek hockey rinks to encourage physical activity and provide accessibility to hockey facilities for youth. The first two rinks in the City of Pittsburgh are located at Banksville Park on Crane Avenue and at Lewis Park in Hazelwood adjacent to the YMCA, both opened at the end of 2012. Over the next three years, 10 more rinks will be constructed as part of the $2.1 million project. Project Power Play funding comes from Highmark which is committing $1.5 million and the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation which is providing $600,000. Additional contributions come from the City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County and the local municipalities, which are providing land for the rinks, as well as maintenance, lighting and other support. Dave Soltesz, president of the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation says, “The Foundation’s mission includes creating opportunities for youth that stress physical fitness, teamwork and sportsmanship. The dek hockey rinks and related programs will serve youth in the region, fulfill the Foundation’s mission to encourage youth fitness, and help to make hockey a more accessible sport. These are the best dek hockey rinks anywhere,” Soltesz says. “You have to see it to believe it.” The facilities, 155’ x 75’, are multi-sport courts and each includes a premier dasherboard system like those used in the NHL, players’ benches, penalty box, scorer’s table, goals at each end, and start-up dek hockey equipment. Each facility will have nine access gates, including handicap access via the service gate. Black vinyl fences enclose each facility. Soltesz says, “We are proud of our sport. We are proud of our region, and we are proud to put these types of facilities in the communities.”

PITTSBURGH PENGUINS FOUNDATION

PensFIT

In a first-of-its-kind program, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation is providing free floor hockey equipment to more than 250 elementary and middle schools in Allegheny County. The program, known as PensFIT, got its start on Friday, November 9 when Penguins alum Phil Bourque delivered the first set of equipment to Neil Armstrong Middle School in Bethel Park. The equipment for each school retails at more than $1,000 and includes goals, sticks, stick bags, hockey balls, goalie equipment and a storage bag. In addition to providing student workbooks and instructional manuals, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation will offer a seminar at CONSOL Energy Center for the schools’ physical education teachers – hosted by the Penguins’ coaching staff and team alumni. PensFIT is designed as a three-year initiative to assist elementary schools in providing new opportunities for physical education classes. The long-term goal is to supply free equipment to 600 elementary and middle schools in 10 counties. Schools from surrounding counties will be added during the second year of the program. The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation has teamed up with corporate partner FedEx Ground on delivery of the equipment. FedEx Ground will provide shipping to the schools free of charge.

WILKES-BARRE/SCRANTON

PENGUINS

Joining the American Hockey League for its inaugural season in 1999-00, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins have established themselves as one the most successful franchises in the league. After posting a 23-43-9-5 record in its first season of play and missing the playoffs, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton enjoyed one of the biggest turnarounds in league history as the team made it to its first-ever Calder Cup Final appearance in 2001. Though they would fall to the Saint John Flames in six games, the Penguins would carry on a tradition of success both on and off the ice. In total, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton has appeared in the Calder Cup Final three times and reached the playoffs in 11 out of 13 seasons, including 10 consecutive postseason berths — tied for the longest active streak in the AHL. The 1999-00 season saw the Penguins sellout 26 games their inaugural season. The following year Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton set the league record by selling out the entire season (40-games) en route to a streak BRAD THIESSEN of 144 consecutive sellouts that still stands today as an AHL record. The AHL-affiliate to the Pittsburgh Penguins since its inception, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton has helped develop former draft picks such as Marc-Andre Fleury, Brooks Orpik, Tyler Kennedy and Joe Vitale. Ten former Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins lifted the Stanley Cup when Pittsburgh defeated Detroit in seven games in 2009. continued on page 150

continued from page 150

The Penguins have also seen many of their coaches rise up the ranks with Dan Bylsma and Todd Reirden manning the bench in Pittsburgh, Michel Therrien in Montreal, Todd Richards in Columbus and Mike Yeo in Minnesota. The 2010-11 season marked one for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton history books. Under the guidance of first-year head coach John Hynes, the SIMON DESPRES Penguins went 58-21-0-1 to claim their first-ever Macgregor Kilpatrick Trophy as AHL regular-season champions. In the process, Hynes won the Louis A.R. Pieri Award as the AHL’s Outstanding Coach, while the team set records for wins in a season (58), points ZAC SILL in a season (117), and fewest losses in a season (21). Goaltender Brad Thiessen joined Dany Sabourin as the team’s second recipient of the Aldege “Baz” Bastien Memorial Award. Now in their 14th season of play, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins have amassed more wins (450) and points (987) than any other team in the league over the last ten years.

MIKE LANGE

PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK PLAY-BY-PLAY ANNOUNCER

One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange is calling games in his 36th season with the Penguins, handling radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM “The X” and the Penguins Radio Network. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.

PHIL BOURQUE

PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK COLOR ANALYST

Two-time Stanley Cup Champion Phil Bourque is in his eighth season on the Penguins broadcast team, serving as color commentator alongside Mike Lange. A gritty winger/defenseman, Bourque was signed by Pittsburgh as a free agent in 1982, and went on to record 164 points (75G-89A) in 344 regular-season games with the Penguins between 1983 and 1992. For his career he totaled 199 points (88G-111A) in 477 games with the Penguins, New York Rangers and Ottawa. Since retiring from professional hockey in 2000, Bourque has co-hosted Penguins pre- and post-game shows on the Penguins Radio Network and worked as a contributor for WPXI-TV’s coverage of Penguins hockey.

ATI – INVESTING IN PITTSBURGH’S FUTURE… Committed to Maintaining American Leadership in Manufacturing Mission-Critical Metallics® ATI is building an advanced Hot Rolling and Processing Facility (HRPF) in Brackenridge, PA. This project, just outside Pittsburgh, will be the most powerful hot rolling facility in the world for manufacturing nickel-based alloys, titanium, specialty alloys, zirconium and stainless steel sheet and plate. At a cost of $1.1 billion, the HRPF is among the largest industrial projects currently underway in the United States. When the HRPF is completed in 2014, ATI will have invested nearly $4.4 billion in new, advanced manufacturing capabilities and asset acquisitions since 2004. These investments have been in Western Pennsylvania, Utah, North Carolina, Ohio, Wisconsin, California, Oregon, Alabama and Massachusetts. ATI believes that Pittsburgh, Western Pennsylvania and the United States must be in the vanguard of global manufacturing and that the American worker can compete with anyone given the best products, tools and technologies.

The Pittsburgh Penguins Elite program presented by Dick’s Sporting Goods will feature 13 teams playing at the AAA level — eight boys teams and five girls teams. “Part of our overall vision of supporting local youth hockey has been to create an elite Pittsburgh Penguins youth program that would attract top players in different age groups, offering an excellent environment to develop skills, teach teamwork and compete against top teams from other areas,” said David Morehouse, CEO and President of the Pittsburgh Penguins. “The Pittsburgh Amateur Hockey League (PAHL) and Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League (PIHL) do such a great job of growing the game here, and there are a number of good amateur programs. But we thought it made sense to have a AAA program directly affiliated with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

LITTLE PENGUINS LEARN TO PLAY HOCKEY

Sidney Crosby and his family wanted to help parents introduce their children to the game of hockey — and to do it without having to incur a prohibitive up-front cost. The result is the Little Penguins Learn to Play Hockey program. This generous donation and tremendous, one-of-a-kind opportunity allows children, aged 4-8, to receive free head-to-toe hockey equipment and 10 sessions of on-ice instruction. The 2012-13 season will be the fifth consecutive year for the Little Penguins program, which continues to grow. Last season twenty-three rinks hosted the program, which includes four girls-only locations. Since the program began during the 2008-2009 season more than 3,200 children have been introduced to hockey through this program. This season, 1,000 participants aged 4-8 will receive free gear and learn the game. Thanks to the combined efforts of Sidney Crosby, the Pittsburgh Penguins, Penguins Foundation, Reebok, and Dick’s Sporting Goods, all participants receive full sets of Reebok SC87 equipment, including skates, stick, helmet, gloves, pants, shoulder pads, shin pads, elbow pads, and an equipment bag, as well as an official Little Penguins jersey and helmet stickers. After four highly successful seasons, the program sells out quickly. During the pre-registration period, parents may view information regarding participating rinks, starting dates, number of sessions, and times of instructional sessions, which are listed on the Penguins’ website. For participant convenience, registration will occur online at pittsburghpenguins.com. “We were both excited and amazed by the reaction to the Little Penguins program in previous seasons, and we’re happy to be able to

offer the program again for another year,” Crosby said. “The goal is to continue to create opportunities for more kids in the Pittsburgh area to take up hockey. With the Little Penguins program, they can receive head-to-toe hockey equipment and learn the game in a fun and organized way.” “It’s a tribute to Sid and his family that they want to reach out and create this incredible opportunity for children in the Pittsburgh area,” said Penguins CEO and President David Morehouse. “One of their goals was to help parents by providing free head-to-toe hockey equipment to properly equip their children. The Penguins are honored to join Reebok and Dick’s Sporting Goods in supporting Sid and this great program.”

BEHIND THE BENCH WITH COACH DAN TIPS FOR YOUTH HOCKEY PLAYERS

SKATE, SKATE, SKATE No matter what level you are playing, skating is everything when it comes to hockey. However, skating isn’t just about being able to move backwards or forwards. Change of direction is critical when your team is on the transition from defense to offense, or vice versa. That makes being able stop, turn or pivot on a dime and quickly accelerate out of a start position as much a key to being a good skater as straight-ahead speed. Work hard to improve your skating when you can!

THE IMPORTANCE OF PASSING Pay attention to your passing. Nothing moves the puck up ice quicker than a tape-to-tape pass. A good passing team is able to maintain possession of the puck for long stretches, putting itself in position to generate more offense. What separates the great passers from the good ones is not only are they able to deliver the puck to a teammate when he or she is wide open, but they are able to use the boards and make area passes to teammates in traffic. “Practice perfect passing.”

GET TO THE NET Everybody has probably heard the saying ‘good things happen when you go to the net.’ There is a good reason for that — everything happens there. When you have a chance to shoot, get the puck on net. You also have to make sure that you physically go to the net so that way you are there for tips, rebounds and screens — all plays that lead directly to goals.

WORK HARD AND HAVE FUN We all want to be the best players we can be and help our team win each time we step on the ice. The easiest way to achieve this — WORK HARD EVERY TIME you step on the ice because work ethic is a huge key to being a successful hockey player. Just as important as working hard is ENJOYING THE GAME. Hockey is just that — a game — which means it is something we do to entertain ourselves. When you are having fun on the ice, chances are good that you are playing your best.

DID I MENTION HOW IMPORTANT SKATING IS?

PITTSBURGH BECOMING A HOCKEY HOTBED

continued on page 178

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania might not have a fancy nickname like ‘Hockeytown’, nor is it located in “The State of Hockey” — which is one of Minnesota’s unofficial nicknames for those of you scoring at home — but over the last decade, the ‘Steel City’ has cemented its status as one of the rising hotbeds of the hockey universe. Less than a decade ago, that statement would have been nearly impossible to believe. As the sweltering summer heat swept through our region in 2005, 2005 NHL DRAFT the NHL was in the final stages of wrapping up a lockout that cost the league the entire ’04-05 campaign. Locally, the Penguins were coming off a NHL-worst 58-point season in the year preceding the lockout, and local amateur hockey numbers were in sharp decline. Those fortunes changed with the fortuitous bounce of a ping-pong ball on July 22, 2005 — a stoke of luck that delivered wonderkid Sidney Crosby to the black-and-gold. In the blink of an eye, Evgeni Malkin joined the fold and the duo quickly transformed an up-andcoming team into Stanley Cup champions by 2009. The on-ice and box office success achieved by the Penguins since the arrival of Crosby and Malkin has increased hockey’s profile in Pittsburgh tenfold. Before Crosby’s debut in October 2005, Pittsburgh didn’t have much of a presence within the hockey world outside of legendary Hall of Fame owner Mario Lemieux, who was winding down his illustrious career. Sure, Upper St. Clair native Ryan Malone was coming off an impressive 22-goal rookie campaign with his hometown team, RYAN MALONE and Plum’s R.J. Umberger was set to

make an NHL roster for the first time with the cross-state rival Philadelphia Flyers. But at the time, despite the talents each displayed, both seemed more like exceptions rather than trendsetters. While Malone, who helped the Penguins reach the Cup Final in ’08 before departing R.J. UMBERGER to the Tampa Bay Lightning, and Umberger continue to produce annually on hockey’s grandest stage, the next generation of Pittsburgh-born and trained players continues to make their mark on the hockey world. The dramatic improvement of the Pittsburgh amateur hockey pipeline was showcased at the 2011 NHL Draft in St. Paul, Minnesota, when four of the first 64 selections — J.T. Miller (NY Rangers, 1st round, 15th overall); John Gibson (Anaheim; 2nd round; 39th overall); Brandon Saad (Chicago, 2nd round, 43rd overall); and Vince Trocheck (Florida; 3rd round; 64th overall) — each grew up playing their youth hockey within the local amateur hockey ranks. With his selection at No. 15 overall, Miller became the highest-drafted player ever from the Pittsburgh region, edging out Umberger, who was taken 16th overall by Vancouver in 2001. Gibson was the second goaltender taken in the ’11 draft. Saad, who slipped a bit on draft day after being considered a top-five talent earlier that year, became the first of the quartet to reach the NHL when he made the Blackhawks’ ’1112 opening-night roster. He appeared in two BRANDON SAAD regular-season and two playoff contests with the Hawks, while in between starring for the Saginaw Spirit of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). As good as Saad and Gibson were last year — and First and Third-Team All-OHL honors, respectively, indicate both enjoyed fine seasons — neither was the best Pittsburgh-born player in the OHL.

That honor went to London Knights goaltender — and Wexford native — Michael Houser, who like the four players drafted in ’11 is an alum of the Pittsburgh Hornets ‘AAA’ program. Houser put together one of the finest junior seasons ever while leading the Knights to an OHL playoff championship and a runner-up finish at the Memorial Cup. Houser, who signed an entry-level contract with the Florida Panthers organization during the summer, was named the Canadian Hockey League’s ‘Goaltender of the Year’, won the OHL’s ‘Goaltender of the Year’ award and he became just the third American to win the OHL Most Outstanding Player award after posting a 46-15-0-1 record, 2.47 goals-against average and a .925 save percentage. His 46 wins tied the OHL record. Although Team USA had a disappointing showing at the 2012 World Junior Championship, it is impressive to note that of the 23 players who comprised the Americans’ roster, four (17%) hailed from Western Pennsylvania — Saad, Miller, Gibson and defenseman Stephen Johns, a defenseman from the University of Notre Dame who was selected by Chicago in the second round (60th overall) of the 2010 NHL Draft. This April, the 2013 Frozen Four — college hockey’s version of March Madness — will come to CONSOL Energy Center. If recent Frozen Fours are any indication, there is a good chance somebody from the 412 or 724 area code will factor heavily into determining a champion. That’s because each of the last three winners — Boston College in 2012 and ’10, and Minnesota-Duluth in ’11 — have been buoyed by local contributors. Leading the charge for Boston College at the ’12 Frozen Four was a pair of Mt. Lebanon Blue Devil alums — starting netminder Parker Milner and defenseman Patrick Wey. On their way to leading the Eagles to the title, both players were named to the Northeast Regional All-Tournament Team. Wey, who was drafted by the Washington Capitals in the fourth round (115th overall) of the 2009 NHL Draft, and Milner also played continued on page 183

smaller roles on Boston College’s ’10 championship squad. In between BC’s victories, Plum native Kenny Reiter helped backstop the University of Minnesota-Duluth to a Frozen Four championship over Michigan in ’11 — meaning the winning netminder from the past two national champions has come from Pittsburgh. Young players across our area from mites to high school players to stars at the college and junior level strive each day to become permanent NHL fixtures like Malone and Umberger. Dylan Reese, Mike Weber and Matt Bartkowski are three young defensemen with a sprinkle of NHL experience who appear poised to make that leap in the coming years. The elder statesman of the group is Reese, who like Malone hails from Upper St. Clair and is joining his hometown team this season. Prior to signing with Pittsburgh during the offseason, Reese has played a combined 74 NHL games with the New York Islanders over the past three seasons. Cranberry native Weber has the most experience of the three, suiting up for 132 games with the Buffalo Sabres entering the ’12-13 campaign. A punishing defender, Weber is probably most notorious to DYLAN REESE fans in these parts for not being afraid to mix it up physically with Crosby and Malkin in recent matchups against them. Bartkowski made the opening-night roster for the then-defending Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins last season. The previous spring, he participated in Boston’s march to the Cup as a member of the team’s taxi squad. Ironically, each of Bartkowski’s first three NHL games during the ’10-11 season came at CONSOL Energy Center. As you can see, hockey is alive and well in Pittsburgh at all levels — and that’s without us mentioning the vastly-improved Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League (PIHL) and the numerous players slated to join the college and junior ranks this coming season. Thanks to the on-ice success of the Penguins translating throughout the local community to children of all ages, hockey is only going to continue growing in these parts well into the future.

RUSSIA TRIP MORE THAN JUST HOCKEY FOR U19 PENS ELITE GIRLS

Pittsburgh Penguins Elite

by Brian Zagorac

For the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite 19-and-Under Girls team presented by Dicks Sporting Goods, the trip to Russia last month was the first time most of the players had been to Europe. Many players did not know what to expect of their opponents nor the foreign countries they were visiting. The trip turned out to be much more than a few hockey games against just another opponent. The team left Pittsburgh on January 8, and after a layover in Amsterdam, arrived in the Finnish capital of Helsinki a day later. Although the girls had just spent close to 24 hours in the air, they wasted no time in hitting the ice. They headed to the nearest arena, where they faced off against the local girls team, K.J.T. While the Pens Elite lost 6-5 on the scoreboard, their effort was nothing short of admirable after such a daunting travel schedule. The next morning, the team travelled to St. Petersburg, Russia via bus, where they spent the majority of the trip. St. Petersburg, a city known for its beautiful landscape and scenery, provided numerous photo opportunities for the players and their families. Later that day, the girls played their first game against a Russian opponent when they took on Tver, a team with girls spanning the ages of 12-20. In a show of

sportsmanship and camaraderie, the teams exchanged club banners at center ice before the opening faceoff of every game, a custom similar to those performed before international soccer matches around the world. Tver featured players of various talent levels. While some were highly skilled, the roster also consisted of developmental players whom the hockey club looked to help grow and advance as athletes. This is commonplace in Russian girl’s amateur hockey and the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite hoped to set a strong example of a healthy and experienced women’s hockey club. With some free time before the next game, the players and families took a sightseeing trip to Catherine Palace the following day. Catherine Palace, known for being the summer residence of the Russian Tsars, provided a once in a lifetime experience for the group. Upon returning to St. Petersburg, the girls took the ice for a tilt against Lady Forward, another local Russian girl’s program. They followed up with a game against the St. Petersburg Panthers and a traditional Russian dinner for all Pens Elite friends and family. The first stop before heading home was back in Helsinki, where the team played the Espo Blues, the top team in the Finnish Elite League that featured numerous Finnish National Team members. While the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite 19-and-Under Girls team played five games across the pond, the team took home more than just a few wins and losses. The trip was a cultural learning experience for the girls, who did some educating of their own by exposing Russian teams to a high level of hockey and breaking down barriers through sport in the process.

PENS PROFILE

PASCAL DUPUIS By: Mark Madden

When Pascal Dupuis went to corral a bouncing puck en route to Washington’s net during the Penguins’ 5-2 win at CONSOL Energy Center on Feb. 7, his options were skewed by the fluttering of the disc. Pass or shoot? Dupuis made a wise choice: He let the puck decide. “I was going to pass, but when I saw it bouncing all over the place, I said, ‘I’m just going to try to put it on net. Maybe create a rebound,’ ” Dupuis said. Dupuis did more than that. The puck skittered through the pads of Capitals goaltender Michal Neuvirth, giving Dupuis his fourth goal of the season. The tally was the second of a five-goal Penguins barrage that took just 12:39. “If you ask Sid [Crosby], I made it bounce onto my stick,” Dupuis said, laughing. “It was good to be able to snap it through the five-hole.” Luck is the residue of hard work and design. Dupuis’ hard work has put him in a rich vein of form since the beginning of last season. Dupuis, 33, had a career year in 2011-12. The 6-foot-1, 205-pound winger had personal highs in goals (25), assists (34) and points (59). The Quebec native continued his production at the start of this season, collecting five goals and four assists in the Penguins’ first 14 games. He followed up his red light vs. Washington with the first goal of the game in a 4-2 home win over Ottawa on Feb. 13, knocking in a cross-ice feed from Crosby. The NHL lockout didn’t seem to affect Dupuis’ skills or conditioning. “I just stayed in the gym and did my homework during the lockout,”

Dupuis said. “I was here in Pittsburgh with the family, I went to the rink [Southpointe] with the guys, and I worked out. I got into a routine. “You’re home every night, or at the kids’ activities, and in bed at 10:30 every night. Maybe it sounds boring, but maybe it added on a couple years to my career.” Dupuis has some valuable allies in his ongoing excellence: Linemates Crosby and Chris Kunitz, and confidence. “When you feel confident, you feel good about your game and you feel strong on the ice,” Dupuis said. “I came into the season in good shape, so I don’t have to worry about that aspect of the game. “When you feel good, when you feel confident, when you feel strong and when you’re in great shape, you make the right decisions all the time.” As for his linemates, Dupuis said, “When you play with top players like Kuny and Sid, it makes it easier. It’s fun. It makes it exciting to come to the rink every day. “[The line has] been clicking. Even before Sid got hurt, when he had that 25-game point streak [in 2010-11], it’s a line that worked before. It’s clicking right now again.” Dupuis’ first full NHL campaign was 2001-02. This is season No. 11, but Dupuis feels like he’s getting better, not older. “That’s why I take pride in working out, and staying in good shape,” Dupuis said. “I joke around all the time with Joe Vitale about clean living. That’s what it’s been about lately.” Mark Madden hosts a radio show 3-6 p.m. weekdays on WXDX-FM (105.9).

TWITTER Q & A

PASCAL DUPUIS #AskDuper @JLorenz94 Who’s your favorite teammate? #AskDuper “I don’t think I do have a favorite one. I love all of my teammates.” @MaxRickard @penguins What is your favorite city to play in other than Pittsburgh? #AskDuper “I would probably say my hometown.” @makeitfleury #AskDuper Serious question. Answer carefully. If you could only eat one type of cheese for the rest of your life, what type would it be? “Probably American cheese.” @BigTimePensFan_ #AskDuper @penguins What is your favorite thing about the city of Pittsburgh? :) “My favorite thing would be how nice and genuine people are. And it’s a sports city, so it has good fans.” @Michalak93 How much fun was being an assistant coach for Mite hockey during the lockout? #AskDuper “That was a blast. My son’s on the team so it was good for me just to get out there and help a little bit.” @Courtneeyy13 #AskDuper do you have any special routines you do before a game?! “I do have a routine but I’m not that superstitious. If it doesn’t happen, it doesn’t. But I’m trying to get back to what works.” @JessicaSnow_11 BEAUTY goal Despres! @penguins. #AskDuper How good did you feel off of that assist from Despres goal to make it 3-0 against the Rangers. :)? “It was the third goal, a big goal scored by Simon. You know, it was good to go ahead by three, so obviously it was a good feeling.”

NO. 900 By: Mike Prisuta

MATT COOKE

It was admittedly a monumental event, but Matt Cooke chose not to commemorate the occasion by saving a puck or a stick or some other artifact from career NHL game No. 900. Turns out Cooke is much more into memories than memorabilia, and he already had a career’s worth of those prior to lacing up the skates for the 900th time in an NHL game when the Penguins hosted the New Jersey Devils on Feb. 10 at CONSOL Energy Center. “There are tons,” Cooke said. “Clearly the Stanley Cup is a huge moment for me, a huge accomplishment for me and my teammates, to be able to be a part of something like that. “Another one, I got to win the World Championships over in Prague. To stand on the blueline in another country and have your national anthem played is pretty cool. “There are some great memories along the way.” Beyond being a member of a Stanley Cup-winning team with the Penguins and a World Championship collection from Canada, Cooke may ultimately be remembered for re-inventing himself along the way to longevity. continued on page 218

As recently as the Penguins’ 2010-11 foray into the postseason, Cooke was a spectator for a first-round series against Tampa Bay as a result of his having been suspended for once again crossing the line between playing with an edge and running afoul of NHL law. But he’s been a different player since then, one who has adjusted his approach to the game and the discipline with which he plays the game. Cooke still plays with an unmistakable passion, but he’s more relentless than reckless these days. How far has Cooke come in that transition? “It’s different, obviously, more under control, maybe a little smarter out there on the ice,” Cooke explained. “I maybe didn’t even know that there was a puck out there for some games in my first two years. “The game’s changed a little bit for me that way.” Changed to the extent that last season, Cooke’s 13th in the NHL, he was able to play in all 82 regular-season games and post a career-high 19 goals. “I actually think I maybe move better now,” Cooke said. “The body doesn’t take quite the toll it did. MATT COOKE “Being able to be the player that I have been the last year and a half, there are a lot of nuances of the game that I probably didn’t even realize or recognize even happened that I’ve been able to enjoy.” The new Matt Cooke was on display during the Penguins’ 4-2 victory over Ottawa on Feb. 13 at CONSOL [Energy Center]. Given a battlefield promotion to the second line along with center Evgeni Malkin and right winger James Neal, Cooke did the things continued on page 221

head coach Dan Bylsma anticipated while compiling a stat line that included an assist, three shots, two hits and three blocked shots in 14:18. “Matt doesn’t really need to change his game to play up there,” Bylsma said. “He forechecks, and we saw that. He goes to the net, and we saw that. He’s responsible on the defensive side of the puck, as well, and we saw that. “It might have been Matt’s best game 5-on-5 of the year.” That’s how far Cooke has come since becoming a sixth-round draft pick of the Vancouver Canucks (144th overall) in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft. He credits “having the mental wherewithal to stay with it,” as much as anything else for his staying power. “Obviously, there are challenging times,’ Cooke continued. “There are times when you’re not at your best and there are times when things just aren’t going your way.” Cooke has survived those times by “being able to stick through it and come out and work hard every day and being willing and able to get better every day.” In doing so he’s passed a significant career milestone along the way to, hopefully, an even more grandiose number. “Two lockouts ago the big number was 400, because that put you in your senior [pension] plan,” Cooke allowed. “That number came and went. Obviously now there’s one in the future that’s a big number. I think that’s the goal now and then moving forward who knows. “I think there are like 230 guys that have ever reached 1,000 [games]. That’s a goal of mine, a huge milestone. That would be exciting to hit.”
