GAME NOTES By: Bob Grove

THE SERIES The Penguins and Tampa Bay Lightning meet again tonight for the second time in nine days, as Pittsburgh earned a 5-3 victory over the Lightning on Feb. 24 — the Penguins’ last home game. This marks the first time the Penguins have played consecutive regular-season home games against the same team since they beat the New York Islanders here on Jan. 25, 2011 (1-0) and Feb. 2, 2011 (3-0). . . The third and final meeting between the teams will be April 11 in Tampa Bay. . . Pittsburgh’s goal-scoring ability has been on display in recent games against Tampa Bay, as it has averaged 5.75 goals during its current four-game winning streak against the Lightning and 6.0 goals during its current five-game home winning streak against the Bolts . . . The Penguins, who have won eight of their last 10 home games against Tampa Bay, earned their Feb. 24 win over the Lightning with the help of two goals and three points from Sidney Crosby and the first NHL goal for left wing Beau Bennett, whose five-on-three goal in the second period turned out to be the game-winner. The three points by Crosby were his most ever in one game against Tampa . . . Steven Stamkos was the NHL’s leading scorer when he visited continued on page 8

Pittsburgh last month, scoring one goal and setting up two others in Tampa’s loss. . . Pittsburgh is 38-28-5-4 all-time against the Lightning, including a 23-9-3-3 mark at home. . . Former Penguin Mathieu Garon played the final two periods of that game in relief of Lightning goaltender Anders Lindback, who allowed three goals in the opening period. . . When they met here last month, they were the two highestscoring teams in the NHL, with Tampa at No. 1 (3.88 goals per game).

THE PENGUINS This is the lone home game during a six-game stretch for the Penguins, who just finished a threegame road trip to Florida, Carolina and Montreal. Pittsburgh will play in Philadelphia on Thursday and in Toronto this Saturday before returning home to play five of its next six games — and 10 of its next 12 — at home. The first of those is March 10 against the New York Islanders. . . When Crosby had three points against Tampa last month, he moved past Rick Kehoe and into third place on the Penguins’ all-time scoring list with 637 points. . . Evgeni Malkin did not travel with the Penguins on their just-concluded road trip, as he was placed on the IR after a concussion suffered during a violent collision into the back boards Feb. 22 here against Florida. . . The Penguins signed defenseman Mark Eaton to a one-year contract last week. Eaton, a member of Pittsburgh’s 2009 Stanley Cup championship team, had played the last two seasons with the New York Islanders. Eaton, 35, played four seasons for the Penguins beginning in 2006, skating in 218 games (plus-8). His last regular-season home game with Pittsburgh was April 11, 2010 against the Islanders. . . Pittsburgh began its recent road trip with a power-play goal in 11 straight games (15-for-44,

The Penguins’ defense had accounted for 12 goals and 46 points through 19 games this season, the highest numbers in the NHL. Paul Martin, who had five goals in his first two seasons with the Penguins, had three in the first 19 games this season.

THE LIGHTNING This is the third of a four-game road trip for the Lightning, who played in New York against the Rangers last Thursday and in Boston on Saturday. They will play in New Jersey tomorrow night and then play five of their next six games at home. . . Cory Conacher, who had a goal in the Lightning’s loss here last month, was leading all NHL rookies in scoring heading into last week with seven goals and 17 points in 18 games. He was a major factor in leading Tampa’s AHL affiliate in Norfolk to the Calder Cup last spring. . . The defense pair of Sami Salo and Victor Hedman were a combined plus-22 heading into play last week. . . Former Penguin Adam Hall had three assists in his first 17 games with Tampa Bay this season. . . Former Penguin Ryan Malone missed the Lightning’s visit here last month with a lower-body injury.

The First Ever ES Hybrid. 40 MPG EPA-Estimated.* At first glance, it’s a bold statement of style. Read between the lines, however, and you’ll discover that the first ever ES Hybrid doesn’t merely make a statement, it backs it up. Take, for instance, the sleek, sculpted appearance. It’s not just for show—the aerodynamic design boosts fuel efficiency up to an EPA-estimated 40 MPG.* And while the hand-stitched panels and precision-crafted interior make a stunning first impression, the available next-generation technologies in connectivity elevate the conversation. Ultimately, the 2013 ES Hybrid not only sends a message—it’s sure to build a following.

inaugural year of this collection in 1992, Penguins fans have donated more than 35,000 pounds of food and $31,000 to help those in need. The Penguins organization would like to thank each fan that participated in the Score Against Hunger Food Drive. Each contribution will help the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank to continue their efforts in 11 counties in Southwest Pennsylvania by distributing more than 27 million pounds of food each year and educating children and adults about food nutrition.

point in 11 of Carolina’s first 17 games this season. They co-conspired in style when they scored goals 45 seconds apart on Feb. 24 against the New York Islanders. That made Eric and Jordan Staal the first pair of brothers to score goals less than a minute apart since Neal and Aaron Broten did so for the Minnesota North Stars in a span of 55 seconds on Feb. 27, 1996 against Winnipeg. Eric and Jordan Staal The Staals’ goals were the fastest by a pair of brothers since Peter and Anton Stastny scored 33 seconds apart for Quebec on March 18, 1989 against the New York Rangers.

GREAT ON REBOUNDS: When defenseman Jamie Oleksiak made his NHL debut for Dallas on Feb. 1 at Phoenix he became the tallest player (6’ 7”) in Stars franchise history. Oleksiak still came up short in terms of becoming the NHL’s all-time tallest player (Zdeno Chara, Boston, 6’ 9”).

BUSY IN BUFFALO: Defenseman Christian Ehrhoff was averaging a career-high 24:57 of ice time per game through Buffalo’s first 19 games, the most by a Sabres player since Alexei Zhitnik clocked in at 25:01 in 2003-04.

MINNESOTA DISCIPLINE: Minnesota faced a short-handed situation a league-low 53 times through its first 17 games. SHOOTOUT SHARPSHOOTER: The Islanders’ Frans Nielsen had connected on 24 of 39 career shootout attempts through 19 games this season, the highest percentage (.615) of any NHL player with at least 13 attempts.

LEADER OF THE CAPTAIN PACK: Winnipeg’s Andrew Ladd led NHL captains with 10 goals through his first 18 games, and was leading the NHL in shot accuracy (10-for-47, 23.3 percent) among players with at least 10 goals. RARE SETBACK: The Penguins’ 5-3 victory over the Lightning on Feb. 24 dropped Tampa Bay to 83-35-13 since 2009-10 when Steven Stamkos scores a goal. 24

ICE CREW SPOTLIGHT

RHIANNON COLLEGE: Cal U of PA and University of Delaware NUMBER OF YEARS ON THE ICE CREW: Second Season FAVORITE MEAL TO EAT BEFORE WORKING A PENGUINS GAME: Pasta with pop FAVORITE MEMORY OF BEING ON THE ICE CREW: Playoffs during the 2011-12 season. I never had the opportunity to see a live playoff game at CONSOL Energy Center prior to being on the Ice Crew and it was unbelievable — the crowd was never louder and the fans were extra animated. It is always amazing going out to clean the ice, but going out during playoffs was even crazier because of the extra adrenaline spike I got from the crowd; I will never forget the experience during playoffs! MARIO LEMIEUX CO-OWNER/CHAIRMAN

Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in National Hockey League history, is in his 14th season as co-owner and chairman of the board of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice — including six straight playoff appearances and a Stanley Cup championship in 2009. The Penguins entered the 2012-13 season having sold out 254 straight games while setting new standards for local television ratings, merchandise sales, website traffic and social media. Lemieux and Burkle were driving forces in the quest for a new multi-purpose arena for Pittsburgh and were proud to open CONSOL Energy Center in August, 2010. The sparkling facility is rated one of the top facilities in North America and hosted such national events as the 2012 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament Second and Third Rounds and the 2012 NHL Draft. Known as “Le Magnifique,” Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. An immaculately gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranks eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org. The Penguins ownership group, local labor organizations and members of the Pittsburgh business community honored Lemieux in 2012 with a statue to commemorate his career and contributions to the city and the region. Appropriately named “Le Magnifique,” the statue, by nationally-acclaimed sculptor Bruce Wolfe, can be seen outside of the Trib Total Media gate at CONSOL Energy Center. Mario and his wife, Nathalie, and their four children live in Sewickley.

RON BURKLE CO-OWNER

Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 14th season as co-owner of the Penguins. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they have become one of the outstanding ownership tandems in professional sports. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his essential role in negotiations for a new arena. CONSOL Energy Center is considered one of the finest indoor facilities in North America and has attracted many national-level events to Pittsburgh — including the 2013 NCAA Frozen Four, coming in April, 2013. Under the leadership of Lemieux and Burkle, the Penguins have sold out every game for five-plus seasons and consistently rank among the most fan-friendly and community-minded teams in the NHL and all of pro sports. The Penguins reached back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals in 2008 and 2009 and won the Cup in ‘09. The team’s solid foundation of ownership has enabled hockey management to spend to the salary cap, sign many of the team’s young core players to long-term contracts and put a competitive team on the ice year after year — leading to six straight playoff berths. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is Co-Chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League, Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy and AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA). Ron was the Founder and Chairman of the Ralph’s/Food4Less Foundation and the Fred Meyer Inc. Foundation. He was a member of the board of Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: OXY), KB Home (NYSE: KBH), Kaufman & Broad S.A. (Euronext: KOF), Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO), the J. Paul Getty Trust, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Music Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. He has received numerous honors and awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year, the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year Award and the APLA Commitment to Life Award.

DAVID MOREHOUSE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER & PRESIDENT

David Morehouse has established himself as one of the most dynamic senior executives in the National Hockey League. Since being named President of the Penguins in April, 2007, Morehouse has reshaped the team’s image and strategic vision with an emphasis on branding, fan relations, youth marketing, community interaction, corporate outreach and innovative technology. He was given the additional responsibilities of Chief Executive Officer in September, 2010, and oversees every aspect of the Penguins’ operations, reporting directly to co-owners Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle. Under Morehouse’s leadership, the Penguins quickly developed a new commitment to innovative fan outreach — including an annual event where players personally deliver season tickets to fans’ homes and a special preseason game where all 18,000 tickets are distributed free to local youth. His emphasis on branding and marketing, coupled with the team’s success on the ice, enabled the Penguins to lead all U.S.-based NHL and NBA teams in local television ratings during the 2011-12 season. Keeping with that trend, the Penguins led all U.S.-based NHL teams in website traffic and Twitter followers while continually setting new standards for merchandise sales. Youth hockey participation also is on the rise — in part because of Morehouse’s support for efforts such as Sidney Crosby’s Little Penguins Learn to Play program, which distributes free head-to-toe hockey equipment, including skates, to 1,000 kids aged 5-7 each year. The Penguins have sold out every game for five-plus seasons, a streak that had reached 254 games before the start of the 2012-13 season. They also have sold out all suites for four-plus seasons and actually increased capacity at CONSOL Energy Center by 300 seats (to 18,387) after the arena’s inaugural season in 2010-11. Morehouse himself was named 2011 CEO Communicator of the Year by the Pittsburgh Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America. The Pittsburgh native joined the Penguins in 2004 as Senior Consultant on the new arena project following a career in national politics that included stints at the White House, Pentagon and on Capitol Hill as well as key roles in two Presidential campaigns. Morehouse attended the Community College of Allegheny County and Duquesne University and received a master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. He and his wife, Vanessa, have four children and live in Sewickley Heights.

RAY SHERO

EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT & GENERAL MANAGER

Ray Shero has established himself as one of the premiere general managers in the National Hockey League. Shero, 50, who is in his seventh season as Pittsburgh’s GM, has transformed a franchise that missed the playoffs from 2002-06 into a perennial championship contender, including two Stanley Cup Final appearances and a Cup title in 2009. Shero, who was named general manager of the Penguins in May, 2006, arrived in Pittsburgh with a firm, forward-thinking managerial style that incorporates cutting-edge methods of technology, player relations, prospect development and salary cap management. Shero’s efforts have secured the Penguins’ long-term stability and competitiveness with his masterful maneuvering of the salary cap — the Penguins ranked No. 3 out of 122 pro sports franchises in spending efficiency according to Bloomberg Business Week — and multi-year signings of the team’s core players: Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Marc-Andre Fleury, Brooks Orpik, Kris Letang, and James Neal. Shero’s riskiest and boldest move paid off with hockey’s highest prize. With the Penguins needing a jolt of life late in the 2008-09 season, he promoted Wilkes-Barre/Scranton head coach Dan Bylsma to Pittsburgh. Bylsma led a turnaround that resulted in a championship in ’09. Bylsma also won the Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s “Most Outstanding Coach” in ’11. Shero cut his administrative teeth during 14 seasons as an assistant general manager with the Nashville Predators (1998-06) and Ottawa Senators (1993-98). Shero, a native of St. Paul, Minn., was raised in a hockey family filled with tradition. RULES OF THE GAME PRESENTED BY

BOARDING

BOARDING To check or push a defenseless opponent in such a manner that causes the opponent to hit or impact into the boards dangerously or violently.

T:8.5”

B:8.75”

S:8.5”

-

The player applying the check needs to ensure his opponent is not in a defenseless position and if so, must avoid contact.

-

The player with the puck needs to avoid placing himself in a dangerous and defenseless position.

-

Any unnecessary contact with a player playing the puck on an obvious “icing” or “off-sides” play that does not impact boards should be treated as “charging.”

DELAY OF GAME A player may be penalized when, in the opinion of the Referee, is delaying the game in any matter. (Normally six conditions) 1.) Player or goaltender intentionally shoots or throws the puck out

of the playing area.

2.) A defensive player or goaltender in the defensive zone shoots the

puck directly (without being deflected) over the glass.

3.) A player or goaltender intentionally knocks the net’s goalpost off

its moorings, which stops the play.

4.) The goaltender plays the puck out of the trapezoid behind the net. 5.) The goaltender freezes the puck rather than passing it to a team-

mate when no player on the opposing team is within sufficient distance to apply offensive pressure.

6.) Any skater other than the goaltender who uses their hands to

make the puck unplayable.

INTERFERENCE INTERFERENCE

BODY POSITION: Body position will be determined as the player skating in front of or beside his opponent, traveling in the same direction. - A player who is behind an opponent, who does not have the puck, may not use his stick, body or free hand in order to restrain his opponent. POSSESSION OF THE PUCK: The last player to touch the puck, other than the goaltenders, will be considered the player in possession. RESTRAIN: The actions of a player or goaltender who does not have body position, but instead uses illegal means to impede an opponent who is not in possession of the puck. PICK: The action of a player or goaltender who checks an opponent who is not in possession of the puck and is unaware of the impending check/hit. FREE HAND: When a free hand is used to hold, pull, tug, grab or physically restrain an opponent from moving freely, this must be penalized as holding.

STICK: A player who does not have body position on his opponent, who used his stick to impede or prevent his opponent from moving freely on the ice shall be assessed a hooking penalty.

OFF-SIDES Players of the attacking team must not precede the puck into the attacking zone. (Two determining factors) 1.) One of a player’s skates is not in contact with or behind the blue

line of the attacking zone before the puck enters that zone.

2.) The puck must completely cross the edge of the blue line nearest

the attacking zone to be considered inside the attacking zone.

The act of using the stick in a manner that enables a player to restrain an opponent.

-

When a player is checking another in such a way that there is only stick-tostick contact, such action is not to be penalized as hooking.

TOURS AVAILABLE

GET A BEHIND THE SCENES LOOK AT THE ARENA

Tickets for CONSOL Energy Center’s tours draw visitors of all ages and interests who want to see more of the Pittsburgh Penguins’ home and the city’s newest, greenest entertainment facility. CONSOL Energy Center tours, presented by Bayer MaterialScience, walk visitors through areas of the building that fans might not get to see when they attend a game or other entertainment. For example, on the PNC Legends Level more than $1 million worth of artwork, done in collaboration with James Gallery of Pittsburgh, is on display. It includes large wall murals, 10 PNC Legendary Moments shadowboxes and photography featuring Pittsburgh Penguins players. Tours provide guests with an exclusive look at all seating levels of CONSOL Energy Center, as well as the First Niagara, Captain Morgan and Lexus clubs, a Canadian Party Suite, select locker rooms and more. Based on events taking place in the building, Suite 66 and the Visitor’s Hockey Locker Room are shown when available. These areas are of interest to many people but not ordinarily accessible to most visitors. One of the other features included in the tours is the centerpiece PensVision, measuring nearly 25’ wide and 15’ high and 70,000 pounds. With true High Definition resolution along with enhanced contrast and brightness, the screens redefine the arena video experience for Penguins fans. Just below the center-ice scoreboard there are two, 360 degree LED ribbon boards. These are a first of their kind in Pittsburgh. The scoreboard and LED ribbon boards combined cost a total of $8 million. Throughout CONSOL Energy Center there are over 800 flat-screen TVs. They are used to display messages to fans, keep fans in the game while away from

their seats along with displaying the menus at the concession stands throughout the arena. On the FedEx Level, just above the American Eagle Gate, sits the World’s Largest Goalie Mask. The idea of James Gallery, it was painted by renowned artist David Arrigo, who has painted masks for several NHL goaltenders. The display is presented by Bayer MaterialScience and features “The Science of Sport” kiosks showcasing the science behind sports including how a hockey puck moves on ice. The Goalie mask, which is 9.5 feet high by 8 feet wide by 12 feet deep and weighs in between 700-800 lbs, features the celebration of fans and players after a goal is scored. The materials used to construct the mask are protected by a high-performance polyurethane coating containing raw materials produced by Bayer MaterialScience. This basecoat serves as the foundation for both the white background and the artist’s colors. A final polyurethane clearcoat over the artwork provides additional protection and durability. Also part of the tour is the Highmark Kid’s Zone — an interactive play area that offers both educational and recreational activities for children of all ages. The Highmark Kid’s Zone includes four Wii consoles, videos and trivia, faceoff and puck games, along with a replica of the famous Sidney Crosby dryer. Located further down the hall is the Highmark Wall of Champions. The Highmark Wall of Champions is two stories tall and contains the official jerseys of all PIHL (Pittsburgh Interscholastic Hockey League) teams, regional high schools as well as select other amateur teams in the region. “The tour highlights the environmentally friendly components of the building which qualified CONSOL Energy Center to become the first NHL Arena to receive LEED Gold Certification,” says David Peart, Vice President, Pittsburgh Penguins. “The tours allow us to highlight our continuing efforts toward improving the environment, which are detailed on 12 different plaques located throughout the building,” says Mr. Peart. PITTSBURGH PENGUINS FOUNDATION

HEADS UP PITTSBURGH

KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE

In 2012, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation expanded the HEADS UP Pittsburgh free baseline concussion testing program to include youth athletes ages 10-14 in all sports. Since the program started in 2011, over 3,400 youth hockey players have been tested along with 1,500 athletes representing 12 other sports. The program originally began with youth hockey players only. Testing took place at UPMC Sports Medicine on the South Side, as well as at four Community College of Allegheny County locations — Boyce, North, South and West Hills Center. “Our original youth hockey testing program in 2011 was a tremendous success because it touched thousands of young players and created increased awareness about concussion safety,” said Dave Soltesz, president of the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation. “Based on our mission to actively promote physical well being among young people in the community, it was an easy decision to expand the program to other sports beyond hockey.” While athletes are being tested, their parents meet with UPMC Sports Medicine Concussion Program staff to learn about “HEADS UP Pittsburgh.” Certified athletic trainers from the UPMC Sports Concussion Program supervise the program and testing. MAY 25, 1991 STANLEY CUP CLINCHER With an 8-0 victory over the Minnesota North Stars, the Penguins become Stanley Cup champions for the first time in their 24-year history.

DECEMBER 27, 2000 THE COMEBACK

Sidney Crosby became the youngest player in NHL history at 18 years, 253 days to record 100 points in a season on April 17, 2006. Crosby collected three assists against the New York Islanders to reach the century mark in front of a hometown crowd of 17,084 fans.

JOIN THE RUSH!

Introduced in the mid 1990’s, the American Eagle Student Rush Program is one of the most popular and well known marketing initiatives of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Designed to sell remaining game-day inventory, the American Eagle Student Rush program provides the Pittsburgh Penguins an opportunity to introduce new fans to the game of hockey at a discounted rate. Based upon the positive feedback the organization has received from current season ticket holders who were one-time Student Rush participants, the program has been successful in developing a long-term relationship with young, active Pittsburghers. During the 2012-13 season, at least 200 American Eagle Student Rush tickets will be made available for each regular season home game at CONSOL Energy Center. To avoid long waits outside during the winter months, the organization will host online pre-sales for most games. To receive pre-sale information, students can text RUSH to 32623 to register for the American Eagle Student Rush Mobile Club. Each pregame text includes the opportunity to win two free tickets to the next home game! In addition to the 200 tickets offered each game, several special Student Rush nights will be held. At least 500 student rush tickets will be available for these select games at the American Eagle Gate. Music, prizes and giveaways will also be provided courtesy of American Eagle Outfitters. For more information on the American Eagle Student Rush program and a schedule of upcoming Student Rush nights, scan the code at the top of the page or visit pittsburghpenguins.com/studentrushÂ

BEHIND THE SCENES WITH THE PENGUINS速 ON AND OFF THE ICE

ELECTRIC NEAL By: Sam Kasan

James Neal attended his first NHL training in 2005 with the Dallas Stars as a wide-eyed 18-year-old. And what Neal learned at that first camp has forever shaped his career. As the young winger watched veteran snipers like Bill Guerin and Jason Arnott snapping pucks from all over the ice, he had a revelation. “When I saw those guys whipping the puck around I knew I needed to work on a few things,” Neal said. “Right from that day on I knew I had to get a better shot, harder shot, quicker release, if I wanted to play in the NHL.” Neal started tweaking his curve, experimenting with different sticks and practicing on getting the puck off his stick faster and with some power. To say that he’s succeeded in his task would be a drastic understatement of immense proportions. Neal, who is in the first year of a six-year contract, has transformed into one of the NHL’s elite goal scorers, thanks in large part to his shot. The red goal light glowed a career-high 40 goals last season for him and he was tied for the NHL lead with 12 through 17 games this season. In fact, at his current rate in a normal 82-game season, Neal would be on pace for 57 goals. continued on page 113

The Penguins scouts saw that lethal scoring potential and general manager Ray Shero acquired him, along with defenseman Matt Niskanen, from Dallas in exchange for Alex Goligoski on Feb. 21, 2011. “Everyone knew what he had in him,” said goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury, who faces Neal everyday in practice. “Ray made a big trade to go get him. I don’t know if everyone expected him to score 40. I’m just happy that everything went well for him.” While Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby may be the game-breaking stars that steal headlines, Neal has been the NHL’s most dominant player when it comes to power-play production. Neal led the entire league last season with 18 power-play goals. And he isn’t about to relinquish his crown just yet. Neal already has eight man-advantage scores this season — three more than any other player in the league. But Neal gives most of the credit for his success to the players around him. “When you play with guys like ‘Sid,’ ‘Geno,’ [Chris Kunitz], [Kris Letang], the puck will find your stick,” he said. “Those guys are so highly skilled and good at moving the puck around, I just try to find spots and areas to get my shot off. They do a great job of finding me.” continued on page 114

113

continued from page 113

Having the smarts to find those spots to get his shot off are also a major factor in Neal’s goal-scoring prowess. “If you’re going to make a book on a shooter and a guy getting open, just watch this guy play the game, both five-on-five and on the power play,” head coach Dan Bylsma said. “He moves to get open. He can get his shot off real quick.” Not only has Neal developed his shot, but he’s become one of the Penguins’ best defensive players, consistently backchecking, getting his stick in lanes and taking away space. “You have to be good on both sides of the puck,” he said. “They say good offense comes from playing hard defense. If we do that we’ll get more opportunities to score.” While his defensive talents may go overlooked by the average fan, Neal’s highlight reel goals over the past two seasons certainly have not. When he gets the puck on his stick, Neal’s sick release has converted opportunities into goals at an efficient rate. “[Neal’s] release is an elite release when he gets that opportunity,” Bylsma said. And that “elite release” was born from a concerted effort after watching Guerin and Arnott at camp eight years earlier. “I could see how those guys could score from all over the ice with their shots,” Neal said. “[My shot has] just gotten better and better over the years working on it.”

PROJECT POWER PLAY Project Power Play represents a group of partners; The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, Highmark, the City of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County, who are focused on building 12 multi-sport dek hockey rinks to encourage physical activity and provide accessibility to hockey facilities for youth. The first two rinks in the City of Pittsburgh are located at Banksville Park on Crane Avenue and at Lewis Park in Hazelwood adjacent to the YMCA, both opened at the end of 2012. Over the next three years, 10 more rinks will be constructed as part of the $2.1 million project. Project Power Play funding comes from Highmark which is committing $1.5 million and the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation which is providing $600,000. Additional contributions come from the City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County and the local municipalities, which are providing land for the rinks, as well as maintenance, lighting and other support. Dave Soltesz, president of the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation says, “The Foundation’s mission includes creating opportunities for youth that stress physical fitness, teamwork and sportsmanship. The dek hockey rinks and related programs will serve youth in the region, fulfill the Foundation’s mission to encourage youth fitness, and help to make hockey a more accessible sport. These are the best dek hockey rinks anywhere,” Soltesz says. “You have to see it to believe it.” The facilities, 155’ x 75’, are multi-sport courts and each includes a premier dasherboard system like those used in the NHL, players’ benches, penalty box, scorer’s table, goals at each end, and start-up dek hockey equipment. Each facility will have nine access gates, including handicap access via the service gate. Black vinyl fences enclose each facility. Soltesz says, “We are proud of our sport. We are proud of our region, and we are proud to put these types of facilities in the communities.”

PITTSBURGH PENGUINS FOUNDATION

PensFIT

In a first-of-its-kind program, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation is providing free floor hockey equipment to more than 250 elementary and middle schools in Allegheny County. The program, known as PensFIT, got its start on Friday, November 9 when Penguins alum Phil Bourque delivered the first set of equipment to Neil Armstrong Middle School in Bethel Park. The equipment for each school retails at more than $1,000 and includes goals, sticks, stick bags, hockey balls, goalie equipment and a storage bag. In addition to providing student workbooks and instructional manuals, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation will offer a seminar at CONSOL Energy Center for the schools’ physical education teachers – hosted by the Penguins’ coaching staff and team alumni. PensFIT is designed as a three-year initiative to assist elementary schools in providing new opportunities for physical education classes. The long-term goal is to supply free equipment to 600 elementary and middle schools in 10 counties. Schools from surrounding counties will be added during the second year of the program. The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation has teamed up with corporate partner FedEx Ground on delivery of the equipment. FedEx Ground will provide shipping to the schools free of charge.

WILKES-BARRE/SCRANTON

PENGUINS

Joining the American Hockey League for its inaugural season in 1999-00, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins have established themselves as one the most successful franchises in the league. After posting a 23-43-9-5 record in its first season of play and missing the playoffs, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton enjoyed one of the biggest turnarounds in league history as the team made it to its first-ever Calder Cup Final appearance in 2001. Though they would fall to the Saint John Flames in six games, the Penguins would carry on a tradition of success both on and off the ice. In total, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton has appeared in the Calder Cup Final three times and reached the playoffs in 11 out of 13 seasons, including 10 consecutive postseason berths — tied for the longest active streak in the AHL. The 1999-00 season saw the Penguins sellout 26 games their inaugural season. The following year Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton set the league record by selling out the entire season (40-games) en route to a streak BRAD THIESSEN of 144 consecutive sellouts that still stands today as an AHL record. The AHL-affiliate to the Pittsburgh Penguins since its inception, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton has helped develop former draft picks such as Marc-Andre Fleury, Brooks Orpik, Tyler Kennedy and Joe Vitale. Ten former Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins lifted the Stanley Cup when Pittsburgh defeated Detroit in seven games in 2009. continued on page 150

continued from page 150

The Penguins have also seen many of their coaches rise up the ranks with Dan Bylsma and Todd Reirden manning the bench in Pittsburgh, Michel Therrien in Montreal, Todd Richards in Columbus and Mike Yeo in Minnesota. The 2010-11 season marked one for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton history books. Under the guidance of first-year head coach John Hynes, the SIMON DESPRES Penguins went 58-21-0-1 to claim their first-ever Macgregor Kilpatrick Trophy as AHL regular-season champions. In the process, Hynes won the Louis A.R. Pieri Award as the AHL’s Outstanding Coach, while the team set records for wins in a season (58), points ZAC SILL in a season (117), and fewest losses in a season (21). Goaltender Brad Thiessen joined Dany Sabourin as the team’s second recipient of the Aldege “Baz” Bastien Memorial Award. Now in their 14th season of play, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins have amassed more wins (450) and points (987) than any other team in the league over the last ten years.

MIKE LANGE

PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK PLAY-BY-PLAY ANNOUNCER

One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange is calling games in his 36th season with the Penguins, handling radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM “The X” and the Penguins Radio Network. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.

PHIL BOURQUE

PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK COLOR ANALYST

Two-time Stanley Cup Champion Phil Bourque is in his eighth season on the Penguins broadcast team, serving as color commentator alongside Mike Lange. A gritty winger/defenseman, Bourque was signed by Pittsburgh as a free agent in 1982, and went on to record 164 points (75G-89A) in 344 regular-season games with the Penguins between 1983 and 1992. For his career he totaled 199 points (88G-111A) in 477 games with the Penguins, New York Rangers and Ottawa. Since retiring from professional hockey in 2000, Bourque has co-hosted Penguins pre- and post-game shows on the Penguins Radio Network and worked as a contributor for WPXI-TV’s coverage of Penguins hockey.

ATI – INVESTING IN PITTSBURGH’S FUTURE… Committed to Maintaining American Leadership in Manufacturing Mission-Critical Metallics® ATI is building an advanced Hot Rolling and Processing Facility (HRPF) in Brackenridge, PA. This project, just outside Pittsburgh, will be the most powerful hot rolling facility in the world for manufacturing nickel-based alloys, titanium, specialty alloys, zirconium and stainless steel sheet and plate. At a cost of $1.1 billion, the HRPF is among the largest industrial projects currently underway in the United States. When the HRPF is completed in 2014, ATI will have invested nearly $4.4 billion in new, advanced manufacturing capabilities and asset acquisitions since 2004. These investments have been in Western Pennsylvania, Utah, North Carolina, Ohio, Wisconsin, California, Oregon, Alabama and Massachusetts. ATI believes that Pittsburgh, Western Pennsylvania and the United States must be in the vanguard of global manufacturing and that the American worker can compete with anyone given the best products, tools and technologies.

The Pittsburgh Penguins Elite program presented by Dick’s Sporting Goods will feature 13 teams playing at the AAA level — eight boys teams and five girls teams. “Part of our overall vision of supporting local youth hockey has been to create an elite Pittsburgh Penguins youth program that would attract top players in different age groups, offering an excellent environment to develop skills, teach teamwork and compete against top teams from other areas,” said David Morehouse, CEO and President of the Pittsburgh Penguins. “The Pittsburgh Amateur Hockey League (PAHL) and Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League (PIHL) do such a great job of growing the game here, and there are a number of good amateur programs. But we thought it made sense to have a AAA program directly affiliated with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

LITTLE PENGUINS LEARN TO PLAY HOCKEY

Sidney Crosby and his family wanted to help parents introduce their children to the game of hockey — and to do it without having to incur a prohibitive up-front cost. The result is the Little Penguins Learn to Play Hockey program. This generous donation and tremendous, one-of-a-kind opportunity allows children, aged 4-8, to receive free head-to-toe hockey equipment and 10 sessions of on-ice instruction. The 2012-13 season will be the fifth consecutive year for the Little Penguins program, which continues to grow. Last season twenty-three rinks hosted the program, which includes four girls-only locations. Since the program began during the 2008-2009 season more than 3,200 children have been introduced to hockey through this program. This season, 1,000 participants aged 4-8 will receive free gear and learn the game. Thanks to the combined efforts of Sidney Crosby, the Pittsburgh Penguins, Penguins Foundation, Reebok, and Dick’s Sporting Goods, all participants receive full sets of Reebok SC87 equipment, including skates, stick, helmet, gloves, pants, shoulder pads, shin pads, elbow pads, and an equipment bag, as well as an official Little Penguins jersey and helmet stickers. After four highly successful seasons, the program sells out quickly. During the pre-registration period, parents may view information regarding participating rinks, starting dates, number of sessions, and times of instructional sessions, which are listed on the Penguins’ website. For participant convenience, registration will occur online at pittsburghpenguins.com. “We were both excited and amazed by the reaction to the Little Penguins program in previous seasons, and we’re happy to be able to

offer the program again for another year,” Crosby said. “The goal is to continue to create opportunities for more kids in the Pittsburgh area to take up hockey. With the Little Penguins program, they can receive head-to-toe hockey equipment and learn the game in a fun and organized way.” “It’s a tribute to Sid and his family that they want to reach out and create this incredible opportunity for children in the Pittsburgh area,” said Penguins CEO and President David Morehouse. “One of their goals was to help parents by providing free head-to-toe hockey equipment to properly equip their children. The Penguins are honored to join Reebok and Dick’s Sporting Goods in supporting Sid and this great program.”

BEHIND THE BENCH WITH COACH DAN TIPS FOR YOUTH HOCKEY PLAYERS

SKATE, SKATE, SKATE No matter what level you are playing, skating is everything when it comes to hockey. However, skating isn’t just about being able to move backwards or forwards. Change of direction is critical when your team is on the transition from defense to offense, or vice versa. That makes being able stop, turn or pivot on a dime and quickly accelerate out of a start position as much a key to being a good skater as straight-ahead speed. Work hard to improve your skating when you can!

THE IMPORTANCE OF PASSING Pay attention to your passing. Nothing moves the puck up ice quicker than a tape-to-tape pass. A good passing team is able to maintain possession of the puck for long stretches, putting itself in position to generate more offense. What separates the great passers from the good ones is not only are they able to deliver the puck to a teammate when he or she is wide open, but they are able to use the boards and make area passes to teammates in traffic. “Practice perfect passing.”

GET TO THE NET Everybody has probably heard the saying ‘good things happen when you go to the net.’ There is a good reason for that — everything happens there. When you have a chance to shoot, get the puck on net. You also have to make sure that you physically go to the net so that way you are there for tips, rebounds and screens — all plays that lead directly to goals.

WORK HARD AND HAVE FUN We all want to be the best players we can be and help our team win each time we step on the ice. The easiest way to achieve this — WORK HARD EVERY TIME you step on the ice because work ethic is a huge key to being a successful hockey player. Just as important as working hard is ENJOYING THE GAME. Hockey is just that — a game — which means it is something we do to entertain ourselves. When you are having fun on the ice, chances are good that you are playing your best.

DID I MENTION HOW IMPORTANT SKATING IS?

PITTSBURGH BECOMING A HOCKEY HOTBED

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania might not have a fancy nickname like ‘Hockeytown’, nor is it located in “The State of Hockey” — which is one of Minnesota’s unofficial nicknames for those of you scoring at home — but over the last decade, the ‘Steel City’ has cemented its status as one of the rising hotbeds of the hockey universe. Less than a decade ago, that statement would have been nearly impossible to believe. As the sweltering summer heat swept through our region in 2005, 2005 NHL DRAFT the NHL was in the final stages of wrapping up a lockout that cost the league the entire ’04-05 campaign. Locally, the Penguins were coming off a NHL-worst 58-point season in the year preceding the lockout, and local amateur hockey numbers were in sharp decline. Those fortunes changed with the fortuitous bounce of a ping-pong ball on July 22, 2005 — a stoke of luck that delivered wonderkid Sidney Crosby to the black-and-gold. In the blink of an eye, Evgeni Malkin joined the fold and the duo quickly transformed an up-andcoming team into Stanley Cup champions by 2009. The on-ice and box office success achieved by the Penguins since the arrival of Crosby and Malkin has increased hockey’s profile in Pittsburgh tenfold. Before Crosby’s debut in October 2005, Pittsburgh didn’t have much of a presence within the hockey world outside of legendary Hall of Fame owner Mario Lemieux, who was winding down his illustrious career. Sure, Upper St. Clair native Ryan Malone was coming off an impressive 22-goal rookie campaign with his hometown team, RYAN MALONE and Plum’s R.J. Umberger was set to

make an NHL roster for the first time with the cross-state rival Philadelphia Flyers. But at the time, despite the talents each displayed, both seemed more like exceptions rather than trendsetters. While Malone, who helped the Penguins reach the Cup Final in ’08 before departing R.J. UMBERGER to the Tampa Bay Lightning, and Umberger continue to produce annually on hockey’s grandest stage, the next generation of Pittsburgh-born and trained players continues to make their mark on the hockey world. The dramatic improvement of the Pittsburgh amateur hockey pipeline was showcased at the 2011 NHL Draft in St. Paul, Minnesota, when four of the first 64 selections — J.T. Miller (NY Rangers, 1st round, 15th overall); John Gibson (Anaheim; 2nd round; 39th overall); Brandon Saad (Chicago, 2nd round, 43rd overall); and Vince Trocheck (Florida; 3rd round; 64th overall) — each grew up playing their youth hockey within the local amateur hockey ranks. With his selection at No. 15 overall, Miller became the highest-drafted player ever from the Pittsburgh region, edging out Umberger, who was taken 16th overall by Vancouver in 2001. Gibson was the second goaltender taken in the ’11 draft. Saad, who slipped a bit on draft day after being considered a top-five talent earlier that year, became the first of the quartet to reach the NHL when he made the Blackhawks’ ’1112 opening-night roster. He appeared in two BRANDON SAAD regular-season and two playoff contests with the Hawks, while in between starring for the Saginaw Spirit of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). As good as Saad and Gibson were last year — and First and Third-Team All-OHL honors, respectively, indicate both enjoyed fine seasons — neither was the best Pittsburgh-born player in the OHL.

That honor went to London Knights goaltender — and Wexford native — Michael Houser, who like the four players drafted in ’11 is an alum of the Pittsburgh Hornets ‘AAA’ program. Houser put together one of the finest junior seasons ever while leading the Knights to an OHL playoff championship and a runner-up finish at the Memorial Cup. Houser, who signed an entry-level contract with the Florida Panthers organization during the summer, was named the Canadian Hockey League’s ‘Goaltender of the Year’, won the OHL’s ‘Goaltender of the Year’ award and he became just the third American to win the OHL Most Outstanding Player award after posting a 46-15-0-1 record, 2.47 goals-against average and a .925 save percentage. His 46 wins tied the OHL record. Although Team USA had a disappointing showing at the 2012 World Junior Championship, it is impressive to note that of the 23 players who comprised the Americans’ roster, four (17%) hailed from Western Pennsylvania — Saad, Miller, Gibson and defenseman Stephen Johns, a defenseman from the University of Notre Dame who was selected by Chicago in the second round (60th overall) of the 2010 NHL Draft. This April, the 2013 Frozen Four — college hockey’s version of March Madness — will come to CONSOL Energy Center. If recent Frozen Fours are any indication, there is a good chance somebody from the 412 or 724 area code will factor heavily into determining a champion. That’s because each of the last three winners — Boston College in 2012 and ’10, and Minnesota-Duluth in ’11 — have been buoyed by local contributors. Leading the charge for Boston College at the ’12 Frozen Four was a pair of Mt. Lebanon Blue Devil alums — starting netminder Parker Milner and defenseman Patrick Wey. On their way to leading the Eagles to the title, both players were named to the Northeast Regional All-Tournament Team. Wey, who was drafted by the Washington Capitals in the fourth round (115th overall) of the 2009 NHL Draft, and Milner also played continued on page 183

smaller roles on Boston College’s ’10 championship squad. In between BC’s victories, Plum native Kenny Reiter helped backstop the University of Minnesota-Duluth to a Frozen Four championship over Michigan in ’11 — meaning the winning netminder from the past two national champions has come from Pittsburgh. Young players across our area from mites to high school players to stars at the college and junior level strive each day to become permanent NHL fixtures like Malone and Umberger. Dylan Reese, Mike Weber and Matt Bartkowski are three young defensemen with a sprinkle of NHL experience who appear poised to make that leap in the coming years. The elder statesman of the group is Reese, who like Malone hails from Upper St. Clair and is joining his hometown team this season. Prior to signing with Pittsburgh during the offseason, Reese has played a combined 74 NHL games with the New York Islanders over the past three seasons. Cranberry native Weber has the most experience of the three, suiting up for 132 games with the Buffalo Sabres entering the ’12-13 campaign. A punishing defender, Weber is probably most notorious to DYLAN REESE fans in these parts for not being afraid to mix it up physically with Crosby and Malkin in recent matchups against them. Bartkowski made the opening-night roster for the then-defending Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins last season. The previous spring, he participated in Boston’s march to the Cup as a member of the team’s taxi squad. Ironically, each of Bartkowski’s first three NHL games during the ’10-11 season came at CONSOL Energy Center. As you can see, hockey is alive and well in Pittsburgh at all levels — and that’s without us mentioning the vastly-improved Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League (PIHL) and the numerous players slated to join the college and junior ranks this coming season. Thanks to the on-ice success of the Penguins translating throughout the local community to children of all ages, hockey is only going to continue growing in these parts well into the future.

YOUTH HOCKEY UPDATE EVENTFUL SEASON FOR PENN STATE HOCKEY By: Brian Zagorac

In their inaugural NCAA Division I season, the Penn State men’s hockey team welcomed new opponents, said goodbye to an old arena and looked to establish a strong foundation for next season in the newly-formed Big Ten Hockey Conference. Despite not making the NCAA tournament, one would be mistaken to overlook this season by classifying it as anything but a victory for the program. Finishing with a 13-14 record, the Nittany Lions faced more in-season adversity this year than accustomed to. When making the jump from the club level to the NCAA, a certain amount of regression is to be expected. However, after winning seven national championships in Division I Club, Penn State also established a set of standards that come with representing the navy and white. Although those standards may not have been met in the win column, the team’s heart and effort was nothing short of what the Penn State faithful is used to. This season was headlined by victories against some of the top competition in the NCAA. The Nittany Lions recorded wins against future Big Ten rival Ohio State during the Three Rivers Classic at CONSOL Energy Center in Pittsburgh, a 4-2 win against Vermont in front of over 18,000 people at Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia and ended the season with a major upset of perennial NCAA title contender Wisconsin with a 3-2 overtime win. The big time wins over top opponents will be cemented in Penn State hockey history as

landmark victories and lasting moments for the program as well as this year’s seniors. Amongst those seniors were Western Pennsylvania natives Michael Longo (Allison Park) and George Saad (Wexford). Longo and Saad were integral parts in the programs transition from the club level to NCAA. They provided valuable leadership and a veteran presence for a team full of underclassmen. “We knew we were getting a really great group of people in this senior class,” head coach Guy Gadowsky said to GoPsuSports.com. “I knew they’d do a great job of building a foundation.” Another Pittsburgh native, goaltender Matt Skoff (McKees Rocks, PA) looks to become a force in net for the next few seasons. Skoff, a freshman, backstopped the Nittany Lions to the season finale upset of Wisconsin in which he recorded a career-high 42 saves. This season was especially important to the seniors, who said farewell to the historic Greenberg Ice Pavilion, the arena PSU called home for the last 33 years and housed all seven of the teams DI Club national championship banners. Penn State will begin play next year in the Pegula ice Arena, a state-of-the-art building with a seating capacity of 6,000. While the history of Penn State hockey is prestigious and their future as bright as ever, the transition period from A to B that was this season has set the tone for their entrance into the Big Ten while playing with the same heart that saw them win titles in years past.

PENS PROFILE

PAUL MARTIN By: Mark Madden

Last season was not a good one for Paul Martin. Martin knew it, too. “Last year didn’t go the way I would have liked,” said the Penguins defenseman. “At a certain point, you feel like nothing is going your way no matter how hard you try. It was just good to get a clean slate [this season]. “Coming into this year with a new mental and physical feeling helped.” Martin, 31, has certainly made the most of that new feeling. The Minnesota native has teamed with Brooks Orpik to form a shutdown pair for Coach Dan Bylsma, facing the opposition’s top line during most games.

200

Martin has also assumed the job of quarterbacking the Penguins’ power play. Martin first executed that role Feb. 7 at home against Washington. In Martin’s first six games up top, the Penguins’ manadvantage unit converted eight of 25 chances, netting at least one puck in each contest. Martin began the season with two goals and seven assists in his first 16 games. He got the game-winner Feb. 17 at Buffalo, scoring with 2:04 left in regulation to break a 3-3 tie and provide the margin of victory in a 4-3 win. Not a bad start considering last season’s struggles. Even better considering GM Ray Shero gave Martin the option of leaving Pittsburgh. “It wasn’t that big of a conversation,” Martin said. “Those kind of things happen every once in a while. “I came here for a reason: To play for a team that has a chance to win a Stanley Cup every year. Obviously, I wasn’t happy with my performance last year. But I would rather stay here and have a good year than go somewhere else and have a good year, because I came to Pittsburgh to win.” Much of Martin’s turnaround seems mental. “You realize that you can only control certain things, like how hard you work,” said the 6-foot-1, 201-pounder. “You can’t control the bounces. You can be playing great, but things don’t go your way. It’s the nature of the game. “I’m handling things differently. People will always say what they want. The more you listen, the worse it sometimes gets. I maintain focus, prepare the way that I do and just go out to work every day.” Martin played his first six NHL seasons with defense-minded New Jersey. He says his game hasn’t changed since migrating to Pittsburgh. “No matter what system I’ve been in, I’ve always prided myself on defense,” Martin said. “Playing with Scott Niedermayer, Brian Rafalski continued on page 203

and Scott Stevens…just being [in New Jersey] as long as I was, you realize how important it is to play defense. That’s the way [the Devils] play. They’ve proven they can win no matter who’s in their lineup. “Trying to change my game doesn’t work. I have to play the way I play.” Martin enjoys his partnership with Orpik, and the challenge of being matched against the other team’s top offensive players. “Everyone knows when Brooks is on the ice,” Martin said. “He has a physical presence. If he needs to play physical, he does. But he’s not running around and getting out of position. Him with me is more of a positioning thing, and stick, and getting in the way a little bit. I think we complement each other well. “I’ve always played against the other team’s top lines. It helps when you have that responsibility and role to play instead of trying to do too much, or being something that you’re not.” Martin and Orpik don’t always shut out the foe’s top performers. “Every top line is going to get its chances,” Martin said. “It’s trying to minimize them, and taking away their second chances. When you’ve got a clean slate at the end of the night, you feel good about it.” When the Penguins go on the power play, Martin gets to go on the attack. Puck distribution is Martin’s main function on the PP. “Experience definitely counts,” said Martin, who previously anchored New Jersey’s power play. “You need to realize who you’re on the power play with and what makes them successful. But at the same time, the power play comes down to outworking the other team and getting pucks to the net. “With the guys we have on the power play, most of them want the puck on their stick as much as possible. So it’s a matter of distributing the puck in the right spots and giving them a chance to make a play. If the shot’s there, you’ve got to take it. Keep the defense honest.” Mark Madden hosts a radio show 3-6 p.m. weekdays on WXDX-FM (105.9).

PAUL MARTIN #AskMartin7 @AndreasBobby90 @penguins What do you eat on gameday to prepare yourself? #AskMartin7 #Penguins What most people eat, chicken, pasta, some greens. Nothing too exciting. @loganventurino #Pens #AskMartin7 What has been your favorite game that you have played with the Penguins? I really enjoyed the outdoor game. That was a lot of fun. Even though we lost, it was nice to be a part of that. @28_Holly @Penguins #AskMartin7 What’s your most memorable goal you have gotten? :) My first one is the one I remember the most. It was the most fun, being in the league and getting that first goal. The professor Igor Larionov made a drop pass and it was Nikolai Khabibulin. It just went over his shoulder. I remember that one. @jessalynn35 @Penguins Does Neal still come to your house for breakfast? #AskMartin7 If he behaves. Sometimes he gets out of line and I don’t let him. Every once in a while, maybe. @GT_Ellis #AskMartin7 How has this season been compared with your past two years with the Penguins? And great job so far this season, keep it up!!! The longer you spend with guys you get used to them. It’s been a lot more fun. @brilliantiDiya What was the biggest adjustment coming from New Jersey to Pittsburgh? #AskMartin7 We play differently than we did there. At the time it was the system. I’ve figured it out by now. @equestrian66 What did you enjoy most about going through the college hockey system? #AskMartin7 The experience. A little school. You get to have fun. Working out. Being with the guys. It’s a good team atmosphere. A lot of fun. @somehockeyfun Why did you choose to play defense? Or was it not a choice? #AskMartin7 I played forward until second year of bantam. Then they moved me back to D. Not until high school did I start playing defense.

CLIMBING THE CHARTS By: Mike Prisuta

Brooks Orpik has been climbing the charts. If he keeps going in the direction he’s headed he may just end up looking down from the locker room wall someday, and from wherever else the Penguins’ all-time greatest players are recognized and honored. “I don’t know about that,” Orpik countered. “There are some pretty good names up here and we have some pretty good names in this locker room, too. “I’m sure there are a large handful of guys that are in this locker room who will probably be on this wall someday.” Perhaps. But Orpik has already distanced himself from almost all of those who wore a Penguins jersey before him in at least one respect by appearing in his 600th career game with the Penguins. BROOKS ORPIK In doing so on Feb. 15 at Winnipeg, Orpik became just the seventh player to appear in that many games for the franchise. If he stays healthy Orpik will catch Ron Schock (619) and Ron Stackhouse (621) before the regular season ends and will stand alone at the top of the list of games played for the franchise by a defenseman. continued on page 218

“I’ve definitely enjoyed my time,” said Orpik, who was selected on the first round (18th overall) of the 2000 Entry Draft. “I guess it is pretty unique just because of the way free agency has been lowered. I know when I came into the league you had to play until you were 31 before you had any kind of free-agency rights. You see guys moving from team to team a lot more these days than maybe 10 years ago when I came into the league. “I know growing up you always appreciated guys that stayed with one team and had that loyalty between the team and the player. I don’t want to speak for everybody, but just in general, pro sports, there’s not a lot of loyalty between players and teams nowadays.” Orpik’s toughness, durability, physicality, intensity, reliability and leadership are qualities that have long been appreciated by the Penguins. Orpik, meanwhile, fully appreciates all the Penguins have become since he first arrived for six games in the 2002-03 season, after three years at Boston College and two seasons with the AHL Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton Penguins. He’s seen the team grow from a bottom-feeder into a Stanley Cup champion. But he’ll quickly site being happy away from the game, being happy coming to the rink and being surrounded by a good management team and good teammates as reasons for his contentment with the Penguins. “Being around good people all the time helps,” Orpik said.

continued on page 221

continued from page 218

“I’ve talked to other guys who have played here before and they’ve gone other places, maybe they made a little extra money but they were miserable. I know a lot of guys have said directly to me they’d give up that little bit of money, they’d give up more money to come back here. You remember stuff like that when your contract’s expiring. “And having the success later on, winning the Cup later on, I probably appreciated it a little more. Going through the struggles we had as a franchise early on made me appreciate winning and being a part of this organization.” Orpik entered this, his 10th NHL campaign, with 11 career goals on his resume. But he’s long been regarded as one of the Penguins’ core players because of what he means to the team in the defensive end of the ice and in the locker room. And he might someday surpass Mario Lemieux’s franchise record of 915 games in a Penguins uniform. To get to Lemieux he’ll have to first catch Rick Kehoe (722), Jean Pronovost (753), and Jaromir Jagr (806), as well as Stackhouse and Schock. “I’d be lying if I said you don’t ever think about stuff like that,” Orpik said. “It’s obviously really cool when you see guys play their 1,000th game. But it really is just a number. “I think you just want to be impactful as much as you can. You always hear the cliché ‘just take it day by day,’ and sometimes you kind if ignore that or laugh at it, but I think that really is true. As soon as you start thinking about long-term goals you lose your focus, your concentration. That stuff is cool but I think you just kind of roll with it as it comes.”
